The majority of voters answered in the affirmative. The unofficial results showed the vote was 1,555 to 1,159 in favor of closing the school.

Giving Garden pioneer honored Where better to honor Middlefield resident Jen Huddleston, recipient of the Coginchaug Valley Education Foundation’s 2020 Howard Kelley Community Service Award, then at a reception in The Giving Garden? With about 25 people in attendance on a perfect fall day, CVEF VP Tina Gossner said of Huddleston’s role in the creation of the garden, now in its third season, “Many others would have been overwhelmed by starting The Giving Garden. Jen just jumped in and within a year we had rows, fences, a shed, electricity, a set up for an irrigation system and produce to give away!”

Acknowledging her award, Huddleston was quick to point out the true community nature of The Giving Garden, noting she had never experienced a project that flowed so easily. Community members, businesses and charities were eager to contribute.

Winter sports plan looks more normal

“Whenever we needed something, that thing would flow to us as a gift,” Huddleston reflected. “All I had to do was be as present and mindful as possible, and orchestrate.”

The finalized winter plan was due to be released this week. Last winter, CIAC winter sports were delayed until late January, wrestling was cancelled, and all athletes were required to wear masks while competing. Also, no state tournaments were held. Spring 2021 marked a shift towards normalcy for student-athletes. The season started on time, was played in full and included state tournaments.

State launches tax amnesty program Connecticut Department of Revenue Services Commissioner Mark Boughton has announced the 2021 Tax Amnesty program offering individuals and businesses the opportunity to pay back taxes at a reduced interest rate and no penalties. Tax Amnesty began Nov. 1 and ends Jan. 31, 2022. The program provides a 75% reduction in interest and waives penalties and the possibility of criminal prosecution to those who have not filed, have under reported or have existing liabilities related to taxes owed to the state for any tax period ending on or before Dec. 31, 2020. “We know the pandemic has been difficult but paying taxes is the responsibility of every individual and business and all of us must do our part,” Boughton said. “Taxes allow the state to make transformational investments in areas like infrastructure, green spaces, education and affordable childcare and healthcare programs – all of which en-

hance and make our communities better. We are offering a limited time period for those who owe taxes to get right. Those who don’t resolve their tax obligations by Jan. 31 will be subject to penalties and paying full interest, and could also face criminal prosecution.” Taxpayers seeking amnesty can access all program information, including a link to myconneCT, the secure online payment portal, via the Tax Amnesty program website at GetRightCT.com. Beginning Nov. 1, a public information campaign including television, out-ofhome and digital ads will further inform the public about the program and encourage participation. Outreach is also being done to those with known existing liabilities and suspected nonfilers, as well as to local chambers and tax service organizations to help inform and guide businesses and individuals through the process.

Community members unite to dispose of 175 pounds of medications DMLWC and DMYFS wish to thank the community members who participated in the DEA Drug Take Back Day on Saturday, Oct. 23. This year we collected 175 pounds of unused medications! DEA’ Take Back events have been extremely successful in not only removing potentially dangerous unused drugs from medicine cabinets, but also in raising awareness of their link to addiction and overdose deaths.

Thank you to Middlefield Resident State Trooper Matthew O’Brien for hosting this event and for helping to keep our community safe every day. If you or someone you know was unable to attend the DEA Drug Take Back Day and would like to dispose of medications safely at home, email Dena Miccinello, DMLWC’s Prevention Coordinator, at dmiccinello@dmyfs.org for a free Deterra Medication Disposal Bag.

Thank you to everyone for voting us Best Tree Surgeon! With winter creeping up on us, now is a great time to have your trees assessed for their ability to withstand the cold and snow this season!

Election From A1

In other election news, Edward P. Bailey won another term as Middlefield’s first selectman. According to the unofficial results, the Republican incumbent earned 978 votes, easily defeating his Democratic challenger Mary E. Johnson (476). And in the race for Town Clerk in Middlefield, Democrat Donna M. Golub (794) held off Republican Janine C. Skelps (665).

Middlefield First Selectman Edward Bailey cruised to reelection.

In Durham, First Selectman and Board of Selectmen seats were not up for grabs this year, but locals had plenty of other decisions to make, including who to place on the Regional School District 13 Board of Education. And the top vote-getters for school board were all Republicans. Lindsay E. Dahlheimer (1,061), Amanda V. Betty (1,041) and John Mennone (1,027) earned four-year terms on the BOE, while Ja-

son H. Stone (1,078) was elected to a two-year term. Durham Democrats fared better in the Planning and Zoning Commission race, where Janet Morganti (892 votes), Joshua Eddinger (862) and Christopher Balay (839) earned seats.

The unofficial referendum results showed local voters favored closing John Lyman School, pictured, by a margin of 1,555 to 1,159. File photo

Also securing P&Z spots were Republicans Michael R. Dahlheimer (1,120) and Philip S. Augur (1,097).

James Martinelli (1,189 votes), Chuck Stegnel (1,211) and Robert S. Guynn (1,084) earned seats along with Democrat Molly Nolan (863).

Republicans also had a strong showing in the race for Board of Finance, where

A day to thank veterans for their sacrifices Here are some important facts to know about Veterans Day, coming Nov. 11 Veterans Day is Thursday, Nov. 11. The following article, dated Nov. 5, 2018, and posted to the U.S. Department of Defense website, defense.gov, lays out some important facts about the holiday.

A lot of Americans get this confused, and we’ll be honest — it can be a little annoying to all of the living veterans out there. Memorial Day is a time to remember those who gave their lives for our country, particularly in battle or from wounds they suffered in battle. Veterans Day honors all of those who have served the country in war or peace — dead or alive — although it’s largely intended to thank living veterans for their sacrifices.

Veterans Day does not have an apostrophe. A lot of people think it’s “Veteran’s Day” or “Veterans’ Day,” but they’re wrong. The holiday is not a day that “belongs” to one veteran or multiple veterans, which is what an apostrophe implies. It’s a day for honoring all veterans — so no apostrophe needed.

It was originally called Armistice Day, commemorating the end of World War I. World War I officially ended when the Treaty of Versailles was signed on June 28, 1919.

Veterans Day is not the same as Memorial Day.

However, the fighting ended about seven months before that when the Allies and Germany put into effect an armistice on the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month. For that reason, Nov. 11, 1918, was largely considered the end of “the war to end all wars” and dubbed Armistice Day. In 1926, Congress officially recognized it as the end of the war, and in 1938, it became an official holiday, primarily a day set aside to honor veterans of World War I. But then World War II and the Korean War happened, so on June 1, 1954, at the urging of veterans service organizations, Congress amended the commemoration yet again by changing the word “armistice” to “veterans” so the day would

honor American veterans of all wars. For a while, Veterans Day’s date was changed, too, and it confused everybody. Congress signed the Uniform Holiday Bill in 1968 to ensure that a few federal holidays — Veterans Day included — would be celebrated on a Monday. Officials hoped it would spur travel and other family activities over a long weekend, which would stimulate the economy. For some inexplicable reason, the bill set Veterans Day commemorations for the fourth Monday of October. On Oct. 25, 1971, the first Veterans Day under this new bill was held. We’re not sure why it took three years to implement, but not surprisingly, there was a lot of con-

Great Britain calls it “Remembrance Day,” too, but observes it on the Sunday closest to Nov. 11 with parades, services and two minutes of silence in London to honor those who lost their lives in war.

World War I was a multinational effort, so it makes sense that our allies also wanted to celebrate their veterans on Nov. 11. The name of the day and the types of commemorations differ, however.

Canada’s observance is pretty similar to our own, except many of its citizens wear red poppy flowers to honor their war dead. In Australia, the day is more akin to our Memorial Day.

fusion about the change, and many states were unhappy, choosing to continue to recognize the day as they previously had — in November. Within a few years, it became pretty apparent that most U.S. citizens wanted to celebrate Veterans Day on Nov. 11, since it was a matter of historic and patriotic significance. So on Sept. 20, 1975, President Gerald Ford signed another law (Public Law 94-97), which returned the annual observance to its original date starting in 1978.

In Brief Coat collection With winter around the corner and many families still feeling the financial impact of the pandemic, Best Cleaners is kicking off its 13th annual Coats For Connecticut campaign a week earlier. The public is urged to go through their closets; gather up coats that are in good condition but no longer needed; and drop them off at any one of Best’s 14 locations Nov. 4 to 12. Children’s coats in all sizes are a bigger need this year. All donated coats will be cleaned and delivered to centralized Salvation Army drop sites where volunteers will sort the coats for distribution directly to those in need.

This isn’t the only time I have revolved my life around a TV show. For many years the soap opera “Guiding Light” was a mainstay in my life. Yes, an addiction/obsession. Monday through Friday, 3:00 until 4:00. Back in the day, I had a part-time job in the evening which started at 4:00. Well, it was supposed to. I’m not proud of this, but when I took the job I said that I had to start a little later because I had to wait for my husband to get home from work and watch the baby. But really, I just didn’t want to miss the end of “Guiding Light.” When the show ended some years ago, I was nearly devastated. Guiding Light had seen me through a move to Georgia, getting married,

having kids, moving back to Connecticut, getting divorced. We’d been through a lot. Lately I have been thinking about getting some episodes on DVD. Google told me that, for the paltry price of $12, I could buy four. I hesitate to do this, however, because I think I should only deal with one obsession at a time.

Okay, back to Outlander. I asked Laura when it will resume, and she said the end of the year. The thought of once again spending my evenings with Jamie and Claire is the only thing that heals the wound caused by summer’s end. The countdown has begun.

I thought I could make the break because the show has too much violence for my taste. I spend a goodly amount of time closing my eyes. But they had me with the time travel thing. I simply cannot resist a story where people start out in the 20th century and end up in the 18th. I have often wished I could do the same thing. For just a day, though. I would not be able to abide those

corsets the women were expected to wear. I’m a “free and flowing” kind of a girl.

PROVIDE A SERVICE?

I find myself, as we inch closer to a new season, thinking about how Season 5 ended. Jamie asked Claire how she was feeling (she’d been through a horrific experience, you may recall), and she said that she felt safe. And … scene! We Outlander groupies are nodding in unison, saying, “Oh, dear girl, not for long. Don’t get too comfortable.”

As you “Outlander” fans are well aware, we are between seasons right now. I thought I was doing pretty well with the situation. It felt good, I reasoned, to take a bit of a break from my obsession. And obsession is not too strong a word. I lived for my next Outlander DVD from Netflix. I would call my son’s fiancé, Laura, also a fan, to discuss the latest happenings on the show. I was in deep! So after my withdrawal symptoms, brought about by the end of last season, began to subside, I thought that perhaps I could get out from this particular addiction. Cut ties altogether. Go my merry way. It does not look promising. Already I am casting an eye toward Season 6, and I can feel the old rumblings begin to raise their head. I don’t think I can give it up. I really don’t.

In pre-pandemic years, schools, churches, and businesses would conduct their own coat drives and drop off their donations to Best. With many social-distance protocols still in place and more people working from home this year, groups that have cancelled collections are asked to get the word out that coat donations can be dropped off directly at Best Cleaners in Berlin, Bristol, Canton, Farmington, Glastonbury, Middletown, North Haven, Old Lyme, Plainville, Rocky Hill, Simsbury, Windsor, and the newly-opened West Hartford location on Sedgwick Road.

The Coats For Connecticut program was started by Best Cleaners in 2008 with the primary goal of putting its eco-friendly services to work to help those in need get through the cold winter months. Since the campaign’s inception, more than 129,000 coats have been collected, cleaned and delivered.
