Never forgotten

To honor the memory of her beloved dog, Bailey, Middle field resident Nancy WinshipPoole donated brain training games, and a book, “The Idiot’s Guide to Fun and Tricks with your Dog,” to the Levi E. Coe Library.

Also, Poole immortalized Bailey by purchasing an engraved brick for her which has been placed on the library pathway.

A certified reading dog, many lo cals will recall meeting Bailey at the library, or at one of the many schools she visited.

Bailey was recognized with a “Friends of Education” award from the RSD13 Board of Educa tion for her work with young read ers, and local students always en joyed when the Australian Shep herd/Border Collie mix paid a vis it.

EDITORIAL: Honoring veterans each November

The following was published in the Record-Journal on Nov. 11, 2013:

At the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month of 1918, an armistice went into effect, ending The Great War between the Allied Powers (predominantly Great Britain, France, Russia, Italy and the United States) and the Central Powers (Ger many, the Austro-Hungarian

Empire, the Ottoman Empire and Bulgaria). In 1926, the United States Congress called upon the nation to mark, each Nov. 11, "the cessation of the most destructive, san guinary, and far reaching war in human annals and the re sumption by the people of the United States of peaceful relations with other nations, which we hope may never again be severed ..." In other

words, Armistice Day was created mainly as a day to celebrate the peace and hope that it would last.

It didn't. "The war to end all wars" would turn out to be just a prelude to World War II the biggest, most destruc tive war in human history and to the many regional wars that have followed it. In 1954, in the wake of World War II and Korea, Armistice

Day became Veterans Day, in honor of American veterans of all wars. In 1968, the obser vance was moved to a Mon day, but a few states refused to follow suit, causing confu sion. In 1978, it was moved back to Nov. 11, where it re mains to this day. Back in 1918, President Woodrow Wilson had proposed his ide alistic Fourteen Points, in cluding the creation of a

League of Nations to oversee the resolution of the disputes that had led to the war, and to build a lasting peace. Sadly, Wilson's allies instead de manded draconian punish ments and war reparations from Germany conditions that would contribute greatly to the rise of the Nazis and his own country rejected the League.

Halloween letter: Take that, Charlie Brown

Maybe they need to update their maps, like my GPS is always telling me to do.

Linus here. I cannot thank you enough for your visit on Halloween. I just cannot stop doing my Happy Dance! I like to think that, if you had legs, you would be doing one, too. Finally, after all these years and all those cold nights in the Pumpkin Patch, I got to meet my hero. Charlie Brown, you naysayer, what do you have to say about that?!

You did not disappoint. I was surprised to see you come via a parachute. I must say, it was a nice touch. And kudos for being so prompt. You came at 8:00, as

promised. I can’t tell you how grateful I was for that.

Those late nights really took a toll on me. I would fall asleep at my desk the next day at school. When the teacher roused me, and I ex plained that I had been up late waiting for the Great Pumpkin, there usually was a round of raucous laughter. I did not care for it.

Did you like the snacks I brought? Notice I did not bring any pumpkin pie. I thought that would have been rude. That could have been a relative. I tried to or der a pizza for us, but the Pumpkin Patch does not seem to be on anyone’s GPS.

Our time together just flew by, did it not? I knew you couldn’t stay that long, as you would, in due time, be flying through the skies de livering toys and candy to children, but I treasured the time we did have. I hope you get credit for all you do. Do kids wake up the day after Halloween and wonder where the toys and candy came from? I hope they know it’s you. You are just as generous as the Easter Bun ny, the Tooth Fairy, and San ta. Maybe even more so. Be cause, as I have mentioned so many times before, you do not have a naughty or nice list (like a portly gentle man who shall remain nameless). For which I will be eternally grateful.

I’m glad I brought an extra chair for you. You had a long night ahead of you, and I did not want you to start it off by sitting on the cold ground and catching a chill. The conversation was absolutely delightful.

Thank you for listening to me drone on about the gang you know, Charlie Brown and Lucy and Snoopy, etc. They are a handful, and I appreciate the sympathetic ear. And thank you for lis tening to my harangue about school. Not a fan of the book learnin.’

I loved hearing your stories as well. How you started off as just a little seedling of a thing, and grew bigger and stronger with each passing year, until you were chosen to sit on a child’s step for Halloween. And then you

obviously I don’t know how, and I’m not even sure you do became endowed with magical properties, so that you could fly all about on Oct. 31.

I learned so much about pumpkins that night. I had not realized there were so many varieties. I had always thought a pumpkin was a pumpkin. Not so, you say! Well, you are my favorite va riety, whatever it is.

GP, let’s do this every year. We simply cannot let this be a one-time thing. I do be lieve you enjoyed it as much as I did, so why not?

I am crossing my fingers that I will see you on Oct. 31, 2023. You don’t have fingers, I know, so I will cross some extra ones, on your behalf.

From A1

The Department of Veterans Affairs notes that there is sometimes confusion be tween Veterans Day and Memorial Day.

Veterans Day honors veterans of all wars in which the U.S. has fought. Memorial Day, which originally honored those killed in the Civil War, is now a day when the Ameri can dead of all wars are re membered. The American Legion reminds us that Veter ans Day is a time to honor all of the men and women who have served in our armed forces: "Not all veterans have seen war, but a common bond that they share is an oath in which they expressed their willingness to die de fending this nation."

The VFW points out that we now lose more veterans to suicide at home than we lose on the battlefield in Afghanistan, and calls on the nation not just Congress and the VA, but individual Americans as well to do more to help veterans over come their injuries, both physical and mental, when they come home.

Parades and speeches are fine, but that would be a way of truly honoring the vets.

“The pandemic prevented Bailey from pursuing her life’s work and joy. We were hoping to start up again” this past September,” Win ship-Poole pointed out.

Sadly, in early 2022, Bailey was hit by a truck and killed on Route 66. WinshipPoole was away from home at the time, so one of her friends organized a memori al for Bailey which drew 22 attendees.

“This dog was not just my dog, not our family’s dog, but she was a community dog,” said Winship-Poole, who rescued Bailey in 2012 when the pup was just 1.

“Bailey’s body language in vited you to pet her,” Win ship-Poole said. “Perhaps it was her deep, soulful eyes or calm demeanor so soft to the touch.”

Police department to host gun buy-back on Nov. 19

CHESHIRE The Cheshire Police Department, 500 Highland Ave., will hold a gun buy-back Saturday, Nov. 19 from 9 a.m. to noon.

Police chief Neil Dryfe was approached by local organi zations about the possibility of the department hosting a buy-back. The First Congre gational Church and Boul der Knoll Community Farm suggested the event. “I thought it was a good idea,” said Dryfe. “From the safety aspect of it, an individual or household might have an old shotgun or rifle in the closet, it hasn’t been used, and they need a way to dispose of it safely, rather than keeping it around. It keeps it out of the wrong hands and it’s the safe way to dispose of it.”

The First Congregational Church and Boulder Knoll Community Farm recently hosted Swords to Plow shares Northeast, an orga nization that trans forms guns into garden tools.

Swords to Plowshares works with communities to hold gun buy-backs; one step in its overall mission to reduce gun violence.

Other partners in the Nov. 19 gun buy-back effort in clude Chesprocott Health District, Temple Beth David, St. Peter’s Episcopal Church, First Church Cheshire and Guns to Gar dens.

Rules for the Nov. 19 gun buy-back, per the Cheshire Police Department, are as follows: All types of guns will be ac cepted.

Cash payouts will only be given for working guns.

Guns must not be loaded.

If individuals are unfamiliar with the firearm, they should not handle it exten sively.

All individuals who are turning in firearms should place the firearm in a clear plastic bag and put them in the trunk of their vehicle.

Ammunition should be bagged separately.

This will be a no-contact process, and anonymous. No ID is required.

Individuals will drive-in and drive-out. Signage will direct individuals to drive to an area where officers then retrieve the firearm from the trunk.

Individuals do not get out of their cars.

DURHAM- Deborah J. (Yusza) Sokol, 52, of Durham, died November 2, 2022 at Middlesex Hospital surrounded by her loving husband of 29 years, Jason Sokol, her two children, Emily and Christopher Sokol, and her father, John Yusza, Jr. She has passed to her heavenly home with God and was reunited with her mother, Patricia (Slavinski) Yusza.

She was born August 28, 1970, and lived a life that inspired others to be the best versions of themselves, to give unselfishly, to work hard, to give things that special touch, to think about others, to laugh more, to compliment someone, to stay strong in times of adversity, and to stand up for those who cannot stand up for themselves. She said that if she was able to do that, then despite not being physically here, she will never be forgotten.

It’s Heating Assistance Awareness Month

Press Release

With winter approaching and heat ing systems being turned on in homes and businesses across the state, Eversource is reminding cus tomers about the many resources available to them.

In recognition of Heating Assis tance Awareness Month in Con necticut, the energy company is partnering with state leaders and the communities it serves to raise awareness about payment plans and energy assistance programs available to help keep homes and businesses warm this winter.

“This is a challenging time for our customers as temperatures drop. We have many ways to help, and customers should absolutely take advantage of them. Most important is that if you meet state income re quirements, we will protect your household from service shut off during the coldest months each year, ” said Eversource Vice Presi dent of Customer Operations Jess Cain.

“We’re holding free virtual informa tion sessions, and we’ll go over cru cial programs that customers should know about including Con necticut’s Energy Assistance Pro gram and Eversource’s Matching Payment Program and New Start, which can provide lower monthly payments.”

Customers who’ve never needed assistance previously may not real ize they qualify for protection from service disconnection and may also be eligible for other programs to re duce past due balances.

Eversource is encouraging cus tomers who are having difficulty paying their energy bills to partici pate in one of three upcoming noon-time webinars Nov. 17, Dec. 1 or Dec. 8 to learn more about programs available to help. Regis tration is required. Sign up at Ever source.com/Billhelp.

Customers can also call the energy company at 800-286-2828 to learn more about the assistance and pay ment programs available.

Vocal Chords hit the stage Dec. 11

The Middlesex Hospital Vo cal Chords will present our annual holiday concert, “Let’s Have a Music Celebra tion,” Sunday, Dec. 11, 2 p.m., at Portland High School, 95 High St.

Samuel Tucker, musical di rector, has arranged an eclectic program that show cases the wide-ranging tal ents of this 80-member cho rus and eight-piece band.

In addition to some of your holiday favorites such as “O Come All Ye Faithful,” and the classic “Please Come Home for Christmas,” selec tions from Handel’s “Messi ah” will round out this excit ing program.

Community outreach is an important part of our organi zation's history. This year our dedicated members donated 1,107 pounds of food items and $2,580 to the Amazing Grace Food Pantry. They also

give of their time to sing at the hospital's annual Hospice Memorial program and Vet erans Day programs in the area. Thanks to your support and the generosity of our dedicated members, over the years, the Vocal Chords have awarded over $80,000 in scholarships to graduating high school seniors in Mid dlesex County pursuing a ca reer in nursing or music.

Tickets to the annual holiday concert are $20 and can be purchased from members of the Vocal Chords or by call ing Joyce at 860-342-3120 or Diane at 860-347-2787. For more information, visit vo calchords20.org or find the group on Facebook.
