Waterline construction set to start in August By Everett Bishop Town Times

After decades of living with contaminated water, Durham residents may finally see some relief. According to Edward Hathaway, the

project manager for the Durham Meadows Waterline Project, work on establishing a waterline from Middletown to Durham should take place in early August. The Durham Meadows pro-

ject began in 2007 when Laura Francis, first selectwoman of Durham, first took office. The project was designed to provide Durham residents and commercial buildings with clean water free of contaminants.

New ordinance allows agritourism By Everett Bishop Town Times

Agritourism allows farms to diversify their profits, which is especially important to A new ordinance in the town those that aren’t large of Durham would allow local enough to receive subsidies. farms to host agritourism “Durham’s brand is agriculevents. This could include tours, farm-to-table dinners, ture,” said Frank DeFelice, educational demonstrations chairman of the Planning and Zoning Commission. and other ventures that would bring more visitors to “Durham has a unique geographic location. Because of local farms.

its central geography, Durham is in a unique position where people from all over the state can easily access the town.” Jesse Allen, owner of Leaning Oak Farm in Durham, said DeFelice had reached out to him, and also Tim Gastler of Gastler Farm, for See Ordinance, A5

Those contaminants had leaked into the bedrock under Durham due to industrial processes at the former Durham Manufacturing Co. and Merriam Manufacturing Co., as early as the 1970s. “In my process of trying to learn what the status was, the state of Connecticut said ‘Well, we need to do a feasibility study to find out where the clean water can come from. Would you be interested in applying for a grant to do that study?,’” Francis said. “I then said ‘The public needs to be a part of this.’ So we had a meeting and that’s when it became very clear to me how frustrated and frightened that our residents were having properties affected by the contamination.” Francis said from then on she “pledged to keep this on the front burner.” In a presentation given to the town of Durham in April, it was noted that the major contaminant of the area is trichloroethylene (TCE), a chemical that the Center for Disease Control describes as carcinogenic. In order to provide residents and commercial buildings with clean water, Durham was given the greenlight to create a waterline from Mid-

dletown to Durham. The entire cost of the project is estimated to be around $35 million according to Francis and will be entirely paid for by the Environmental Protection Agency and the Connecticut Department of Energy and Environmental Protection. The plans for the waterline cover a large portion of Durham, as Francis and the EPA aim to not only provide clean water to homes in the contaminated “plume” area, but also in the buffer zone outside of the plume. “What the EPA intended to do was hook up homes in that buffer zone where they believe the plume is going to travel,” Francis said. “They want to try to make this as permanent a solution as possible. There will be properties that currently have a clean well hooked up because they’re in that zone.” Francis noted that the reality was “a little difficult” for some property owners to accept. In fact, there are approximately five people living in the buffer zone who haven’t signed the paperwork to connect their wells to the new waterline, according to Hathaway. See Waterline, A5

Familiar face takes the reins at veterinary hospital By Everett Bishop Town Times

After 32 years in business, the Powder Ridge Veterinary Hospital in Middlefield has changed hands. Dr. Lawrence Brooks sold his practice to an employee, Dr. Blaire Michael, and her husband, James Fasano, in December of 2018. “I’d worked here for about 10 years part-time, and it was a great location and its got great clientele that are super dedicated to their pets,” Michael said. “[Dr. Brooks] was hoping to keep

it a family-run business and not some corporation. So it was sort of a perfect fit that came together.” For Michael, this move was something of a dream come true. “I’ve always loved animals and there was never any other path that I could think about going down,” she said. “I never wanted to be a ballerina or an astronaut or a fireman. I was always going to be a veterinarian.” At the moment, Powder Ridge Veterinary Hospital has 10 staff members and two permanent doctors, with another arriving in August.

time you walk in the door. That, I think, would be a really great thing for the clients and for the pets. And that’s kind of where I see the practice going.” In a letter to the Town Times announcing that Powder Ridge Veterinary Hospital had changed hands, Brooks recalled buying the plot of land where the hospital now sits, in 1986, from his neighbor and World War II veteran Bob Malcolm.

REBEL WITH A CAUSE

COMMENTARY

The courage of Karen Silkwood Too many mosquitoes By Bronwyn Commins

In a 2018 interview on The Graham Norton Show, Cher recalled the first time she saw the trailer for Silkwood in a movie theater. Meryl Streep’s name came on the screen, and everyone applauded. Kurt Russell’s name came on the screen, and again, everyone applauded. Then Cher’s name came on the screen, and everyone in the theater laughed.

Back then, I didn’t realize the hard truths of this story, and I use the word “story” loosely here, because the events in this movie really happened. Although I was old enough to handle the rough language and some of the mature comments on relationships, I was too naive to get what was really happening here. I couldn’t grasp the reality that sometimes those in charge, inept as they are, are devious enough to destroy those who

First of all, this is not a movie for young people. I was at least 18 when I first saw it, and that was on HBO, because this is not something I would have expressed an interest in at the theater. (Nor would my parents have taken me.)

Nobody loves summer more than I do. What’s not to love, right? Oh wait, I know of something not to love. These infernal bug bites! They just keep coming. All kinds of little beasties have, apparently, taken great delight in snacking on me. I must be one tasty morsel, indeed.

I wonder if they were still laughing after she was nominated for an Academy Award. Probably not. It’s an eerie parallel to the events in Silkwood. Sometimes you don’t know what a person is capable of until the end. Sometimes the people we are quick to dismiss make the biggest waves, like Cher. Like Karen Silkwood.

speak up when they see something wrong. Karen Silkwood worked for Kerr-McGee, a plutonium processing plant in Oklahoma. Slowly, Karen begins to ask questions. Why are people destroying an old truck late on a Friday night? Why are employees doctoring photos of chemical rods that are inspected for safety? Here’s the kicker: once Karen starts speaking up, that’s when she begins to be painted as the “bad guy.” She is now the one who caused a shutdown at the plant so she could spend the weekend with her children. She contaminated her own home to make the plant look bad. Of course that was after she beSee Commins, A16

finance. He said that he finally started farming because of his “obsession with good food” and education.

DeFelice created a task force consisting of Allen and Gastler and also various state agricultural commissions. They looked at how farm venues hosting events would address issues such as parking and traffic flow at larger events, as well as making sure that buildings on local farms could safely hold larger assemblies of people.

“People want to feel more connected to their food, they want to know where it comes from,” Allen said. According to DeFelice, the increased revenue brought in by agritourism won’t only help local farms, but the entire town. He said, “After they eat lunch or dinner at the farm … They might then go to one of our stores on Main Street. They might decide they want to get an ice cream down here at the south side of town. That initial economic boom that we see in the agricultural area will expand out to our commercial businesses.”

One young member of the Durham community who submitted a nomination wrote, “Brenda cares about the wellbeing of everyone and I love her for that.” Brenda’s Main Street Feed was established in 1980. The Chapman Manufacturing Company was established in 1936 in Old Man

Chapman’s garage in Durham then moved to its current location on New Haven Road when it was purchased by Bill and Doris LeVee. Current owner Tracy Camassar was chosen by the LeVees to take over the operations of the shop about 7 years ago. She and her son, Joel, and husband, Jason, have kept the operations virtually the same, using all American-based sources and materials to create their tool kits. Aside from a great product and outstanding service, those who nominated this small manufacturing company noted the owner’s contributions to the environment by recycling everything including their trash, metal shavings, oil used in the shop and the packaging materials they receive which are used in their outgoing packages. Camassar and company have received the Connecticut DEEP Green Circle award 3 years in a row for their recycling efforts, ridding their property of invasive plant species and for planting native species of flora. The grounds of the facility are a National Wildlife Federation Certified Wildlife Habitat.

Carr From A4

Yes, my little guy was a streaker at a very tender age! But seriously, we did not have time for modesty.

gan sharing some of her concerns with the union. What a “coincidence.”

Silkwood is available at the Durham Library.

The pharmacy had something that was supposed to get rid of them, but it didn’t work for me. They obviously had set up shop and had no immediate plans for leaving. It was hell. Okay, back to Connecticut, and my ongoing tirade. Sometimes I can feel something biting me, and I cannot see a thing. (I hope those nosee-‘ums didn’t follow me.)

That’s the worst, because I cannot swat anything away. My attacker is invisible. Show yourself, you coward! It’s always a mystery to me. The spiders are out in full force, but they don’t bother me. Except the suspiciouslooking ones who look like they will kill me in my sleep. They have to go. I do not intend to sleep with one eye open. I usually get my share of bee stings about now. They like to set up little villages under

Alright, my tirade is over now. I’ve got to go. I have some serious scratching to do.

These debates are part of the process of winnowing aspirants for office. Who are the candidates who can unite the country around an agenda of robust democracy and shared prosperity? While authoritarians promote division and hatred, Democrats promote unity, inclusion and an agenda based on economic, social, racial and environmental justice.

The successful Democratic 6 Way Road, Middlefield candidate must also attend 860-349-7033 to present dangers. This great country does not need Now offering daytime hours Now offering daytime hours a person who keeps children in cages at the border, coddles foreign dictators, shatters alliances with other democracies, uses the presidential office to make money, lies so consistently that lists of lies are kept on the Internet, subsidizes fossil fuels, downplays climate change and undermines democratic institutions and norms.

Things didn’t end well for Ms. Silkwood, but her influence still had an effect, and yes, things did change at Kerr-McGee. Ultimately, Karen and Cher proved one thing: in the end, people will take you seriously.

Even worse were the nosee’ums. It was just like that, too-you didn’t see them. Oh, but you sure felt them! Yankee that I am, I had no knowledge of these offenders, so I plunked down one day on some moss, which, unbeknownst to me, was full of them. A rookie mistake! Suffice it to say things did not go well for me after that. These little marauders get under your skin and drive you to the brink of insanity with the itching. Under your skin!
