Middlefield town boards are in the approval stages of a new streetlight contract with Tanko Lighting which would replace all town streetlights with L.E.D. ones. During its June 18 meeting, the Board of Selectmen voted to recommend the Board of Finance approve $232,379 in funding for the lighting replacement project. The Middlefield Giving Garden was conceived years ago by Coginchaug Area Transition, but the group only broke ground last fall. Transition is a group that works to foster resilient local communities in the face of rising energy prices, climate uncertainty and resource depletion.
The contract includes a rebate from Eversource of about $41,000, resulting in a net project cost of $191,139.
If the board approves the funding, action would go back to the Board of Selectmen to set a Special Town Meeting during which residents would have the final say.

Last September, the Regional School District 13 Board of Education voted to allow community members to participate as nonvoting members on most of its subcommittees. Several people have since been appointed, but there’s room for more.
For the BOE, it means a little less of a burden of work on an already stretchedthin board, as well as opportunities to more actively hear from people with different views and expertise.
Board member Bob Yamartino said there are still spots left for people to get involved, and as the board prepares for a new school year, it’s the perfect time to sign on.
“I really welcome viewpoints, different viewpoints, I don't want everyone to be exactly like me ... and I want them to have a say in how it goes,” Yamartino said.

Don’t trust your electric bills When people think about “legislators” they naturally think about elected officials as “law makers.” Making laws is certainly an important and large part of being a “legislator,” but an equally important part of the job is constituent service. Many times, “constituent service” is the most satisfying part of the job.
What I learned as a result of my pursuit of my complaint was eyeopening.
I actively participated as an “Intervenor” on behalf of the public in this case and attended a series of PURA meetings to listen to what the utilities, the suppliers, the Office of Consumer Counsel, the Attorney General and the PURA itself had to say. To my surprise there was an awareness of the problem going back to January of 2016, when the new utility billing format was

In light of the record of carelessness and indifference on the part of the utilities and the electric suppliers, I urge readers to double check their electric bills back to January of 2016 if they purchased their electricity from any of the electricity suppliers. Nearly onethird of Connecticut ratepayers may be affected. In light of the unreliable and erroneous track record of the utilities and the electric suppliers, I urge people to personally review their electric bills and compare the “next cycle rate” with the actual rate in their electric bills the following month. They may find out, like I did, that they were overcharged hundreds of dollars for their electricity. The Attorney General estimated that the average overcharge was $45 per month. That means over 1 year a consumer may have been overcharged more than $500. If you were overcharged, you will be entitled to a refund. But don’t take the utilities’ or suppliers’ word for how much you may have been overcharged. When it comes to your electric bill, “Don’t trust — verify”! Len Suzio is a former state senator.

A year after installation, Tanko Lighting estimates energy usage will be reduced by 103,102 kWh, from about 150,000 to 47,000 kWh. This is estimated to save about $45,000 in energy usage costs annually. The current high pressure sodium street lights are maintained by Eversource. VETERINARIAN SAYS GOODBYE
I’m humbled by the confidence you have shown me As I am no longer affiliated with Powder Ridge Veterinary Hospital and as I anticipate continuing to practice well outside the local Durham/Middlefield area, I am writing to express my sincerest thanks and appreciation to all those who have been such a big part of my life for the past 32 years. Firstly, I must thank the late Bob Malcolm; neighbor, World War II veteran and American hero. Prior to losing a son in the conflict in Vietnam, Bob lost his left arm from injuries incurred behind enemy lines in Normandy.
Bob, however, honored the original price without question. I also want to thank Geoff Colegrove, then and still our part-time town planner, for educating and assisting me through the process to gain P&Z approval. Obituaries Andrew S. DiSilvestro, Sr. DURHAMAndrew Salvatore DiSilvestro, Sr., was born on May 16, 1960. He passed away peacefully on June 30, 2019 at home surrounded by his wife and four children. Andy was a devoted husband and father. He leaves behind the love of his life, Sharon (Pietrzyk) DiSilvestro and their four children: A son Andrew Jr. of Middlebury, his son Joshua, and his two daughters: Rachel and Sarah all from Durham. Andy enlisted into the Navy at age 17 where he began the life he longed for. After being in the Navy, Andy did many odd jobs and completed his GED. He enrolled at Middlesex Community College which changed his life forever. He met Sharon, completed his degree and then married Sharon. Soon after he completed his degree Andy enrolled in Ona Wilcox School of Nursing; this decision helped spring-board him into a career where he flourished and became an outstanding Unit Director at Connecticut Valley Hospital. Andy loved to volunteer. He was a volunteer firefighter for CVH, a Boy Scout leader, Eucharist Minister, sang in the choir and was
part of the Knights of Columbus all within St Mary of Czestochowa. He also volunteered many years for the Durham Fair Association and was a regular blood donor. Andy had a great sense of humor and loved life. He constantly joked and brought perpetual laughter and joy to his wife and children. Andy always wanted to live in the country and his dream came true when he and his wife purchased a home in Durham. Andy enjoyed his yard and home and was often found working to improve both. He was a family man and loved being with his wife and children. He was proud of his children and the life he built with his wife. Andy fought early on-set Alzheimer’s for years. He

constantly amazed his family by remaining within himself and then revealing a small glimpse of his personality throughout his fight with this terrible illness. In addition, he leaves behind, his sister Angela Fava from Seattle, WA, his brother, George Malone and sister, Sandra White both from Middletown, CT, his beloved Uncle Sal Malone (Champ) from Portland, CT, his in-laws Ellen and Stan Pietrzyk (Mom and Dad P.) from Middlefield, CT, his many sisters and brothers-in-law, and nieces and nephews. Flora Price DURHAM- Flora Price, 91, of Durham, beloved wife of the late Patrick Price, died Thursday, June 27, 2019 at her home. She was born in Griminish, Scotland, daughter of the late Donald and Marion (MacPherson) MacKechnie. Flora worked at the Meriden Veterans’ Memorial Hospital as a laboratory technician, primarily in the hematology department. Flora is survived by her sons, Donald Price of Durham, William Price of Greeneville, TN, daughter, Patricia Parmelee and her husband Joel of Randolph, VT, brother, William MacKechnie of England, sister, Margaret McDonald of Scotland, five grandchildren, Aimil, Bart, and Clark Parmelee, Amanda and Heather Price, as well as two great grandchildren, Seamus and Lucy. She was predeceased by her husband Patrick, brothers, Donald and Ian and grandson, Kevin Meisterling. Her Funeral Liturgy was held at Notre Dame Church, Durham. Burial was in Mica Hill Cemetery. Summer programs Sports camp for children age 5 to 13 will be offered in two, week-long sessions at Peckham Park. The focus is on developing skills in a va-
riety of sports and activities, while building self-esteem, confidence and learning about competition and sportsmanship. Session one ran July 1-5. Session two is July 29-Aug. 2.
Tennis camp is offered for children age 5 to 16. The camp is geared towards teaching the fundamentals of each stroke, court awareness, etiquette, tactics and strategy. Session one is July

The group is led by two trained facilitators, a licensed professional and a para-professional with lived experience. Recognizing that this disease affects entire families, the group provides a forum to share openly while receiving peer support, information and the compassion that everyone deserves, thus breaking the stigma and isolation created by the disease.
