Success Brings Responsibility One of the most exciting things about being president is being ‘up close and personal’ concerning changes and updates to the breed. I have the opportunity to receive firsthand information regarding happenings in the breed – and the industry as a whole – as they are unfolding. I often receive information before it is published. I also have the opportunity to visit face-to-face with breeders and industry professionals and learn of ground-breaking news items as they are happening. Being president, I am apprised of situations as they are arising and this has done nothing but raise my excitement for the breed. This was something I never thought about much before being on the Board, but that I am very grateful for now. I have learned a great deal about how the cattle industry really works and how Red Angus fits into that industry. It has also given me the opportunity to think in depth about the future of Red Angus. I must say that our future looks awesome! We are poised with the rise of Red Angus to become one of the premiere breeds in the nation, and may already be the second largest beef breed behind Black Angus (we’ll know more on that next summer when final registration counts become available). This puts all of us as Red Angus breeders in a unique position. We need to maintain a strong focus on producing the best Red Angus genetics we can and provide outstanding bulls for commercial herds across the nation. Doing so will keep the Red Angus breed growing. We’re in the driver’s seat, but we also need to be very aware of the awesome responsibility that has been bestowed upon us with the rise in recognition and popularity.

6 American Red Angus Magazine n January 2018

There is an old saying, “Getting to the top is easy – Staying there is the hard part!” The way to stay at the top is through perseverance, hard work and team work! All of us as breeders need to be each other’s champions. Red Angus has gotten to where it is because of its popularity and acceptance in all segments of the industry. We need to keep making a positive showing in all arenas, whether it’s through high-profile bulls in semen studs, impressive phenotypes in the public eye of the show ring, or the incredible number of breeders producing highly useful bulls for the commercial cattlemen across our nation. We need to keep that pipeline supplied with not only red-hided, but sourced and genetically verified Red Angus cattle. All of these things combined are what is going to keep Red Angus growing and heading for the top. These facts are undisputed: · Red Angus replacement heifers topped markets all across the country in all weight classes last year! · Red Angus FCCP enrollment is on the rise! · Red Angus registrations are on the rise! · Red Angus memberships are on the rise! · Red Angus is exceeding the growth of any other breed in the industry! These are the facts and this is why all of us should be proud of the Red Angus breed. Let’s go into the 2018 bull sale season with pride about a very successful year in 2017, but let’s also commit to NEVER resting on past accomplishments, but continuing to strive forward in every possible way. Let’s keep Red Angus heading for the top! n

A Lesson in Value-Added: Missouri’s Show-Me-Select Heifer Program

Everyone enjoys selling cattle at a premium. The trouble is, for many years commercial cattle were little more than a commodity. Prices for feeder cattle, calves, bred heifers and even cows varied little from group to group despite substantial differences in health, genetics, overall quality and performance potential.

Thankfully, times have changed. It is now common to see price differences of $15 to $20 per hundredweight on calves and feeders in the same sex and weight category. Real-world examples of how value-added cattle outsell their non-descript counterparts are becoming more prevalent. Which begs the question – what can we learn from programs that create added value well before sale day, and then successfully capture that extra value when the cattle are sold? The answer is “plenty,” and one program with much to teach is Missouri’s Show-MeSelect Replacement Heifer Program. Initiated in 1997 as an effort to improve calving ease and reduce dystocia-related death loss, the Show-Me-Select Program now creates value across a much wider spectrum. It’s become about placing better genetics and bettermanaged replacement heifers into the herds of Missouri producers. Heifers

that qualify for the program must meet minimum standards for a host of characteristics including: reproductive soundness, pelvic area, vaccination program, weight, frame size, muscle, body condition and disposition. Heifers must also be bred to bulls with approved calvingease EPDs. During 2017, Show-Me-Select conducted 10 sales across the state. One such sale was held in Kirksville, Missouri, on Nov. 17. At that sale, 147 bred heifers sold for an average of $1,872 per head. Top prices exceeded $2,000. Overall, Show-Me-Select heifers were valued by their buyers at $213 per head more than the CattleFax average bred heifer price for November ($1,659 per head). That’s a very positive result! Value-added followed by value capture in the form of a premium sales price – exactly how value-added programs are supposed to work for the seller.

Association Commentary And for the buyer, Show-Me-Select utilizes objective criteria guaranteeing an above-average product – in this case, a superior heifer and ultimately, a superior cow. Missouri is the nation’s third-largest beef-cow state, with just over 2 million cows. Historically, the Show-Me state was not known for quality cattle, but over the years its reputation has changed for the better. The ShowMe-Select Heifer program gets a significant portion of the credit for that change, having contributed to the betterment of Missouri cattle both directly and indirectly. By setting minimum standards and encouraging producers to buy verified, valueadded heifers, Show-Me-Select has shepherded large numbers of superior heifers into herds across the state during its 20-year existence. That’s the direct effect.

Indirectly, this program has changed mindsets, causing both seedstock and commercial producers to think differently about how they select replacement heifers and also about the bulls used on them. You can hardly find a Missouri producer today who doesn’t know about the program, and many say it has positively influenced how to approach their business as a commercial cow-calf producer or seedstock breeder. Dave Patterson, State Beef Extension Specialist at the University of Missouri, explained that, “One of the program’s biggest benefits is that it is an educational conduit, helping bring technology into herds that will positively affect financial outcomes.” There are a lot of interesting parallels between the Red Angus FCCP or “Yellow Tag” program and Show-Me-Se-

12 American Red Angus Magazine n January 2018

lect. Both started in the 1990s when few in the cattle business were thinking about differentiation or value added in any form. Both involve objective criteria and a qualification process assuring buyers receive what they pay for, and both FCCP and Show-Me-Select have earned positive reputations allowing them to market cattle at premium prices. One difference is that FCCP focuses primarily on feeder calves, while Show-Me-Select is all about heifers. The overall takeaway is that both of these programs are tremendous examples of how the value-added and value-capture process works. It’s also encouraging to see Red Angus heifers become a growing part of Show-Me-Select. We applaud everyone involved in the Missouri Show-Me-Select Heifer program. Great job and thanks for showing the industry how value-added is done! n

Marketing Update

by Katie Ochsner, RAAA Commercial Marketing Specialist

The Proof is in Your Pocketbook

It’s that busy and exciting time of year when calves are being shipped and the hard work of the year is finally being rewarded with a big fat check. For some producers, that check is bigger than others. Sale barns across the nation have been hosting Red Angus-focused sales where Red Angus producers and buyers gather to exchange high-quality genetics. Mobridge Livestock Market hosts one of the largest Red Angus sales in the country, and is unique in the fact that it is a “Red Angus only” sale. On Oct. 24, more than 6,000 head of Red Angusinfluenced steers and replacement heifers ran through the sale ring at Mobridge, South Dakota. It was obvious that the demand for Red Angus genetics was high that day and the bidding was aggressive! In order to quantify the premium that Red Angus calves received at the Mobridge sale, we compared price data from the Oct. 24 Mobridge Sale Report to the USDA South Dakota Weekly Auction Summary for the same week. Results can be seen in the table below. Mobridge Sale Report vs. USDA South Dakota Weekly Auction Summary Oct. 24, 2017 Steers Heifers

Special Red Angus Feeder Calf Sales

The numbers tell the story – Red Angus breed influence resulted in a premium on both steers and heifers. On a 5weight feeder steer, the premium was $10.62 per head, which would add up to more than $900 on a single truck load of calves. I’m sure a producer wouldn’t mind adding that extra cash to their pocketbook, but if they had Red Angus heifers to sell the premium was even more substantial. For years the Red Angus breed has been able to tout the quality advantage of the Red Angus female, and here’s proof once again; Red Angus heifers are favored above other breeds. With an $11.60 premium per hundredweight, the $61.64 advantage per head is hard not to like. That’s more than $5,500 difference on a single truck load! In a market environment where many producers usually take a discount on the heifer portion of their calf crop, this price advantage on females alone should be enough to sway producers to add Red Angus to their bull battery. While these price results are specific to South Dakota, we hear similar stories across the nation about the financial advantage that Red Angus genetics are bringing to the market place. The words of RAAA’s popular national advertising campaign ring true once again – it’s good to be ... “Red Right Now!” ■

Member Services Update

Reports Due in February

Spring Herd Inventory Your Herd Inventory is the basis of Total Herd Reporting, and a very important step that needs to be reevaluated every year for each calving season – Spring or Fall. Review every cow that you plan to keep or cull for the upcoming year, or any that unexpectedly exited the herd. This task should not be taken lightly as the animals left in your herd after this process is complete are the ones that are assessed and billed THR in July. Herd inventories can be accessed online in REDSPro. Updates or changes can be submitted online, printed and sent hard copy to the National Office, or a hard copy can be requested from the National Office. Fall Heifer Exposure The heifer exposure inventory enables members to submit breeding data, which is a key factor in the Heifer Pregnancy EPD. This EPD is also a key component to the HerdBuilder index, which can be used to evaluate your animals on one scale. Yearling Heifers 9 to 17 months of age appear on the prelisted inventory. These females will be entering the herd inventory and will be subject to assessments in 2018. The information to report is: • Breeding season dates • Exposure information • Contemporary group designation (i.e Management group) • Disposal information (if applies) Contemporary group designation is used to characterize females that were given different opportunities to conceive. A few ways to distinguish might include: • AI only versus AI plus clean-up bull • Pasture versus dry lot development • Differences in nutrition and/or location The Fall THR first installments have been billed. Also, accounts have been inactivated if members have failed to meet payment requirements. If this is of concern, please contact the Association as soon as possible.

Objective and Purpose of Total Herd Reporting

The objective of THR is to collect reproductive and performance data on all animals within the herd with22 American Red Angus Magazine ■ January 2018

THR Calendar PDF

This calendar includes all of the Association deadlines. We encourage members – especially new members – to review the calendar frequently. Also, we place reminders for each of these deadlines in the ARA magazine (page 26) and eNewsletter with explanations on the importance of each report.

out controlling which animals should be reported. The purpose is to report either a calving record or a reason code as to why the female did not produce a calf for each year the registered female is listed as active. Why would we require every animal be reported and not just a select few? Requiring every animal allows for the elimination of bias towards elite animals, which in return is in favor for the elite animals to express the superiority of the individual. This also allows for a closer evaluation of those that are expressed as being inferior. The information from Total Herd Reporting is used to monitor overall breed reproductive performance and identify genetic, environmental and management efforts. This in return allows for improvement efforts to assist in selection and culling decisions, and generate data for producing genetic predictions for reproductive traits. For further information about THR either contact the Association or visit redangus.org. The Importance of Transferring Animals to all Buyers Not only is it important to report reproductive and performance data, but equally important to transfer animals after they have been sold. Animals should be transferred to all types of buyers – commercial and seedstock producers. The transfer allows for animals to be moved from the current owner’s inventory to the new owner. The new owner can then register offspring from the females if they are registered. The transfer also documents which bulls are available for breeding, allowing the new owner the opportunity to utilize Red Angus’ FCCP and Allied Access tagging programs.

Member Services Update When is a membership needed versus a buyer number created? When an animal is transferred, we need a few points of contact to complete this process so the Association can mail the registration papers to the new owner. The points needed would be: Name Ranch Name (optional) Address Phone number (optional) email (optional) The optional data may become important if staff needs to contact the buyer in the event the registration papers or ARA Magazine is returned for an error or change in the mailing addresses. However, even though this information is needed to complete the transfer, the new owner does not have to pay a membership fee. Our system will allow for the new owner to be documented as a buyer for these purposes. If the new owner plans to register any of the offspring from the newly purchase animal(s), he or she would need to purchase a membership. What are the most important questions to ask before submitting DNA samples? DNA testing is very complex and time consuming, so before you collect and submit DNA samples, understand what you want and what to expect from the results. What do you want to receive from the DNA results? If the animal is on hold for a potential genetic defect (U status), test for the defect in which the animal in the pedigree is listed as a carrier (ex: OSC). If the animals is on hold for parentage (Z status), test the sire or dam for parentage (on file). This includes ALL sires and donor dams. If you want to improve the accuracy of your registered animals’ EPDs without waiting several generations, profile them with GGP-HD, LD, uLD, or Zoetis 50K or i50K. All tests provide parentage, and the respective DNA order form explains the different options, add-ons and pricing. 24 American Red Angus Magazine ■ January 2018

What do your DNA results mean? Genetic Defects “Free” indicates that the animal has been confirmed to NOT be carrying the genetic defect listed in their DNA. A tested-free animal is listed with the genetic defect and then the letter “F” (ex: OSF). “Carrier” (C) indicates that the animal has been confirmed as a carrier of the specific genetic defect for which it was tested, and resulting offspring could express the defect or be a carrier. Parentage “Qualified” indicates that the sire or dam listed on the pedigree is confirmed correct through the DNA parentage test. “Excluded” indicates that the sire or dam listed on the pedigree DOES NOT verify through the DNA parentage test to be the correct parent(s). To verify the correct parent, the member must supply information on other possible parents for RAAA staff to try to match. “Not on File” indicates that the sire or dam’s DNA parentage verification is simply not on file with RAAA and therefore cannot be tested to qualify or exclude as the parent(s). The sample for the offspring is now on file and can be used for any future DNA parent verifications when needed. Genomic Data Genomic data is promptly applied to the animal’s EPDs in the database once RAAA staff receives from the lab, which adjusts the EPDs and increases the accuracy number. Sample Failed “Failed” indicates the lab was unable to extract DNA from the sample, and therefore unable to report results. All samples that are listed as “failed” have been subject to two rounds of testing, in an effort to retrieve data from the sample. RAAA staff will send an informational document with failed results explaining failure causes. It is the member’s responsibility to read this information. The second submission of a failed sample DOES require payment. In the case that the second sample fails, RAAA covers the cost of the third sample submission. If a member has questions, please contact RAAA staff to discuss the best possible options. The DNA department can be reached at 940-387-3502, Ext. 8.

Young Stockman Program

The 2018 Young Stockman Program will be held in Kansas City, Missouri, March 2-4. The program will offer hands-on experience in cattle handling, nutrition and cattle health, with guidance from specialists in each area. The event will focus on each of these topics in calves at weaning, with the ability to see the LiveWiRED project calves who are at this age. Miriam Martin, a Colorado State University student working and conducting research under the direction of Temple Grandin, will speak to juniors about animal han-

dling, offering her tips and techniques to reduce stress and increase efficiency. Juniors will have the opportunity to practice these techniques on cattle. The animal health focus will involve selecting proper equipment, learning tips on administering vaccines, and looking for the key signs of a decrease in health, specifically in calves at weaning. Fruit will be utilized to mimic cattle skin and juniors will practice administering subcutaneous and intramuscular vaccinations.

As cattle age, their nutritional needs change. In the nutrition-focused portion of the Young Stockman Program, juniors will explore these changes, looking at various feedstuffs, additives, what purposes they serve and, finally, developing rations. This educational experience will be very hands-on and will allow juniors to interact with others from across the country. Registration for this event is open and is due by Jan. 1, 2018. To learn more and register for the event, go to redangus.org/jra/programs/youngstockman.

Prolific Cow Herd Starts with Stringent Bull Selection Criteria By Teres Lambert for American Red Angus Magazine

38 American Red Angus Magazine â– January 2018

Since building a commercial cowherd that is high-percentage Red Angus, Brian Downing of Brush, Colorado, said he’s experienced a major challenge the past number of years. “I get such good prices for my heifers that it’s tough to keep all of the replacements I need,” said Downing. “People want Red Angusbased heifers and Red Angus has been a hot breed because it offers the whole package – high-quality, efficient cows and good beef.”

Rick Chenoweth (left) has managed Ranches Inc. for more than 40 years and is the right-hand man for Brian Downing (right). Downing’s fiancée, Jenny Robinson, donated a painting to the Red Angus Foundation, Inc.’s fundraising auction this past September.

Uniformity

Ranches Inc., the name of the family-owned corporation that Downing oversees, runs about 500 mother cows. Since using solely Red Angus bulls as its sire power for the past 20 years or so, about 90 percent of the cows are high-percentage Red Angus. The remaining 10 percent, Downing pointed out, have a little Simmental influence. Ranches Inc. has two calving seasons – spring and fall. The spring cows start calving in mid-March, while the fall cows begin Sept. 20. Downing said having two calving seasons works for the ranch as the fall herd can utilize after-feed from its irrigated hay fields, with the fall calves typically bringing 20 to 30 cents a pound more than the spring calves. This year, the spring calves were sold in May on video auction for November delivery. The fall calves typically sell via video auction in April to be shipped the end of May. They retain at least 25 replacement heifers from each of their herds. They confine the calving season for both groups to 60 days. The goal is a uniform group of calves to sell and “to keep the help happy.”

Buyers Buyers trust trust the the Red Red Angus Angus yellow yellow tag tag and and pay pay aa premium premium for for Ranches Ranches Inc.’s Inc.’s quality quality calves. calves.

The “help” Downing refers to is Ranches Inc.’s manager, Rick Chenoweth, who has been with the family cow-calf and farming business for more than 40 years. Chenoweth, with assistance from his wife Sharon, is an experienced and dedicated calving manager. American Red Angus Magazine ■ January 2018 39

Prolific Cow Herd Starts with Stringent Bull Selection Criteria Bull Selection

Downing considers Chenoweth’s opinion and safety in his herd bull selection criteria. “Because I don’t like to get run over when tagging calves, disposition has to be a part of the bull selection equation,” Chenoweth stated. “And I’m not big on pulling calves, either, so, they look for bulls that excel in calving ease.

“They’ve been doing a great job because I seldom have to pull a calf. If I do, it’s because it’s an odd presentation.” The “they” Chenoweth refers to is Downing and Downing’s fiancée Jenny Robinson. At Ranches Inc., bull selection – which typically includes the purchase of two heifer bulls and two cow bulls per year – is a team effort. Downing zeros in on the performance side of bull selection while Robinson looks at type, conformation and movement. With a wealth of information generated by the Red Angus Association of America and available to bull buyers, Downing said he and Robinson “review information about EPDs every year.” Likewise, on an annual basis they go over herd needs and goals to pinpoint parameters for traits deemed the highest priority while keeping all traits in balance. Downing said when he first took over the family ranch in 2001, he initially concentrated on carcass traits.

Downing and Robinson are diligent in selecting their herd sires to produce market-topping steers that have earned them several Grid Master awards.

“I chased the carcass traits before realizing that a cowman can go too far in one direction,” he shared. “Plus, with Red Angus so strong in carcass traits, we can focus on other traits and still have the carcass characteristics we want.”

Prolific Cow Herd Starts with Stringent Bull Selection Criteria For the past five years, Downing has zeroed in his genetic selection on bulls that excel in herd-building ability. He wants bulls that produce top-quality replacement heifers and, for him, it comes down to maternal traits such as milk production, stayability and growth traits, particularly weaning weight. “I want cows that last forever and raise calves that hit the scale at 600 pounds or so without creep feed,” he said. “If a cow only lasts four or five years, you haven’t made any money on her. Replacement heifers are the most expensive animal on a ranch. They have more risk, and it takes two years in a herd before we know what a female will do. I want to raise replacement heifers that will be in the herd for 10 years at least.”

Red Angus cows are favored by cattlemen across the country because the breed offers the whole package of maternal traits, efficiency and quality beef production.

Using what Downing calls his “EPD cheat sheet,” he and Jenny pore over a sale catalog for hours, identifying the bulls that meet their criteria first on paper. Once they have narrowed their list based on performance, Downing turns the reins over to Robinson.

“And that is where Jenny shines,” Downing said. “She uses her artist’s eye and knowledge of a bull’s conformation to pick a bull apart. She finds things I would have missed.”

“If a video is offered, we watch it and whittle our list down even more before going to a sale,” Robinson said. “We also call a bull seller before sale day and see if our choices correlate with the owner’s opinion of each bull. Come sale day, we visually inspect every bull on our list if at all possible.”

Visually, the couple prefers a bull that’s moderate-framed, deepbodied, thick, longer hipped and has good feet and joints. They also like a pleasing head and balance from head to tail. Downing and Robinson are adamant, however, that no matter how much a bull excels in these areas, a gentle disposition takes priority.

Seedstock Producers with a Commercial Focus! 44 American Red Angus Magazine ■ January 2018

Prolific Cow Herd Starts with Stringent Bull Selection Criteria Seven Sage Secrets

Seven key factors help Downing and Robinson decide where to buy their bulls – and he offers wise advice behind each dynamic: 1. Lives within 200 miles of their ranch. “While there are a lot of great bulls outside of our target area, we like bulls that are acclimated to this area. Plus, it means we don’t have to drive a long way to purchase bulls.” 2. Bulls carry a warranty. “While I’ve never had to use a warranty, it’s nice to know that it is there if you need it.” 3. Family operation. “I want a family operation where the owner knows each and every animal.” 4. Integrity. “We only purchase bulls from reputable seedstock producers where we know information provided in the sale catalog is accurate. We want honest operations where no weight is fudged.” 5. Ranches that cull a decent percent of male calves rather than keeping all as bulls. “Not every male calf born on a seedstock operation deserves to be kept as a bull and sold as a herd sire.” 6. Rancher delivers bulls. “It’s a convenience thing.” 7. Producer who cares about my operation. “I like to buy bulls from a person who builds a relationship with me by asking about my cowherd – someone who cares about the success of my cowherd.” Returning to a seedstock producer to purchase bulls hinges primarily on the bull’s experience on the ranch. “Because we use multiple bulls in a pasture, we don’t know a calf’s sire. So, we don’t cull a bull based on his calves,” Downing explains. “But if a bull has fallen apart that first year or developed a less-than-desirable disposition, he’s gone. And we will look for another bull source.”

The foundation of Ranches Inc.’s operation is good maternal genetics.

Prolific Cow Herd Starts with Stringent Bull Selection Criteria Dedication Rewards

Downing’s attention to herd sires has paid off. Since taking over the ranch, cow size is down from 1,700 pounds to 1,200 to 1,300 pounds, and weaning weights are in the 600s without creep. “Our calves usually top the market,” Downing stated. They enroll their calves in RAAA’s Feeder Calf Certification Program, verifying age, source and Red Angus genetics with the yellow tag. “The yellow ear tag has helped tremendously,” said Downing. “Buyers look for that yellow tag because it guarantees they are buying quality calves.” Ranches Inc. markets only all-natural calves – without implants and antibiotics. “We’ve always been all-natural,” Downing explained. “We’re not against guys who use implants, but the all-natural route for us creates a larger buyer pool, and I want as many buyers looking at my calves as I can get.” With several Grid Master awards to his credit, Downing said they “tell me our bull selection has been right on point.” The Grid Master award recognizes ranches and feeders who excel at combining superior genetics, quality end product and precise marketing of Red Angus cattle. “Right now, I’m relying on buyers to tell me if our calves are performing in the feedyard and on the rail as expected, and evidently, they are,” he said. “We are experiencing repeat video auction buyers, and I have to be steadfast in my decision to keep more replacement heifers and not bend when others want them. “It’s a good place to be in.” n

Downing believes in raising high-quality cattle, saying that it’s just as expensive to feed a poor-quality cow so why not feed the best cows you can raise.

Vaccination Protocol is Invaluable Investment for Healthy, Profitable Cowherd by Trinity Lewis for American Red Angus Magazine

With the changing seasons and a fresh year ahead, it’s the perfect time for cattle producers to strategically plan their cowherd’s health and vaccination protocols for optimal well-being and increased profits.

Choosing Prevention Over Treatment Understanding that treatment without prevention is simply unsustainable has been a step in the right direction for progressive cattlemen. Validating what many producers have begun practicing over the past several decades, Kansas State University – by way of assistant professor and beef Extension veterinarian A.J. Tarpoff, MS, DVM – teamed up with the Red Angus Association of America to gather information from veterinarians across the United States and Canada regarding recommended herd health practices for cow-calf operators.

Unvaccinated cattle are susceptible to multiple diseases, jeopardizing the health of the animal and the profitability of the cow-calf producer and all other entities along the beef production chain. Practical Application for a Powerful Investment Mark and Jaime Burchfield own a cow-calf operation near Cody, Nebraska, and run a strict vaccination protocol that closely follows that recommended in the fore-sited RAAA and KSU study. “We look at our health program as an investment,” Mark Burchfield stated.

Veterinarians that responded to the survey devoted 50 percent or more of their time to commercial cow-calf producers. Over two-thirds of the veterinarians’ practices represented 5,000 to 10,000 cows. In short, these are experienced health experts in the cow-calf industry.

The Burchfields begin their annual preventative approach starting in January by administering their bred cows with vaccine to avoid diarrhea in their calves and overeating disease, and another vaccine to prevent Clostridial A. They also pour their cows for parasites.

The research deduced immunization as the pivotal element in healthy beef cattle herds to aid in the prevention of infectious diseases. Disease prevention through a comprehensive vaccination program is the foundation to good health for the lifetime of the animal.

The key to a comprehensive program like the Burchfields follow is that by taking care of the bred cows, their calves have a better chance of being born healthy and remaining healthy for their lifetime.

Vaccination Protocol is Invaluable Investment for Healthy, Profitable Cowherd “We give a lot of shots but a healthy cow herd is invaluable,” said Mark Burchfield. “Our vaccination protocol protects the cows, calves and their future calves. It’s just not worth the risk of not safeguarding them.” Mark and Jaime learned firsthand the importance of paying close attention to herd health. In years past they were experiencing health issues with enterotoxemia, a form of overeating disease, and worked closely with their veterinarian to find a solution to eradicating the problem. While they were already vaccinating for Clostridial C and D, they discovered through a necropsy that they were actually battling Clostridial Type A. They began vaccinating for that strain and haven’t doctored a calf since. In an effort to build on their foundation of health, the Burchfields give their newborn calves a seven-way clostridial. They also tag them with the Red Angus Feeder Calf Certification Program yellow tag that verifies age, source and Red Angus genetics. At branding, they inoculate with combination vaccines to aid in the prevention of IBR, BVD Types I and II, PI3, BRSV, enterotoxemia, blackleg and other diseases. They also administer injectable parasite control and bull calves are castrated. Near late summer, they booster all the calves and Bangs vaccinate their heifer calves so they are ready to enter the Burchfield herd as replacements or to be sold as breeding heifers. The cows are pregnancy ultrasounded, treated for parasite control, and vaccinated to aid in the prevention of abortion, respiratory viruses and BVD. In addition to their cow and calf protocol, Burchfields also follow strict guidelines for the health of their replacement heifers and herd sires. “We have good breed-up on our cows and heifers,” said Burchfield. “We just don’t have reproduction or health issues, and we doctor very few calves.” Largely credited to the fastidious health care of their calves, the Burchfields sell 600-pound FCCP-enrolled steer calves, and heifers that average 540 pounds. They sell through Superior Livestock Auction and have gained a reputation for selling calves that perform well at the feedlot. Building Blocks of Health Just like protein requires amino acids, good health starts with healthy animals who have access to good nutrition. Chris and Hannah Davis manage their commercial Red 54 American Red Angus Magazine ■ January 2018

Angus cow-calf operation at England Farms, a family-owned farming operation in central Kentucky. The Davises calve during both the spring and fall seasons, and background their calves after weaning. “Without nutrition, you don’t have the opportunity to express the genetics you have spent so much time building,” said Chris Davis, explaining that it also takes a well-fed beef animal to be able to accept the benefits or even put to use vaccinations. The Davises’ vaccination protocol consists of mostly modified-live vaccines. At birth, they inject calves with a supplemental source of zinc, manganese, selenium and copper to boost their immune system. When calves are a couple months old, the Davis family administers an intranasal dose to prevent respiratory disease cause by BRSV and aid in the prevention of IBR and PI3, a seven-way killed-virus clostridial vaccine, and pour-on parasite control. They booster the calves at weaning and add a combination IBR and BVD shot to the regime and implant the steers and feeder heifers. In the spring, all cattle receive the pinkeye vaccine. The Davises are a great example of a comprehensive nutrition program that, while strategic, doesn’t take any kind of unusual methods to conquer. “My father-in-law grows several types of winter annuals that we ensile for haylage,” Chris David explained. “We also provide our cattle with a free-choice by-product supplement that is 10 percent fat and 16 percent protein just in case there are any short comings in their hay or pasture.” They take precaution headed into weaning to ensure optimal health. “Three weeks prior to weaning, we creep feed our calves soy hulls with an additive that improves feedlot efficiency and prevents and controls coccidiosis. The calves also have free choice of the by-product supplement,” said Davis.

Vaccination Protocol is Invaluable Investment for Healthy, Profitable Cowherd “We do this to get the calves accustomed to feed prior to weaning and to decrease stress, illness and weight loss.” Davises follow the same vaccination protocol for both their spring and fall calves, and follow similar feed programs. They usually wean their heifer calves at 550 to 575 pounds and background the steers and feeder heifers until they reach 650 to 700 pounds. Implementation Experiencing success in herd health is something that takes careful attention and planning in the beginning, but once an operation has a system established for their cow herd, it is simply a matter of repetitive implementation. For forward-thinking producers like the Davises and the Burchfields, taking a proactive approach to prevent disease is simpler and more efficient than attempting to cure a full herd problem. Healthy calves gain and grow in the feed yard, delivering a profitable, high-quality end product. That responsible beef production in turn allows more people to enjoy a positive beef-eating experience keeping beef in the center of American’s plates. ■

The official abstract, “A survey of recommended practices made by veterinary practitioners to cow-calf operations in the United States and Canada” (Fike, G.D., J.C. Simroth, D.U. Thomson, E.F. Schwandt, R. Spare, and A.J. Tarpoff) was published December 2017 in The Professional Animal Scientist and is available for download at www.professionalanimalscientist.org. The abstract outlines vaccination, health and production protocols as recommended by top veterinarians in the nation.

Red Angus EPDs Provide Reliable Genetic Selection Tools by Larry Keenan, Director of Breed Improvement

Since their release in 1979, EPDs have provided Red Angus breeders with a simple, yet effective genetic-selection tool, which is validated by real-world information.

Table 4.

In an era of abundant information used to promote and describe animals – actual weights, adjusted weights, ratios, EPDs, etc. – producers can have confidence that EPDs remain the gold standard in reliably predicting an animal’s genetic merit. Growth Data Results Included in the original release of EPDs, Weaning Weight (WW) EPD has been a significant component of commercial bull-buying decisions for several decades. Assuming the majority of producers were placing selection pressure on growth using WW EPDs, we would expect a gradual increase in the populationwide average weaning weights reported to RAAA. However, some producers have observed that while the average WW EPD across the entire Red Angus breed continues to increase, phenotypic average weaning weights have not changed in their operation. The question thus becomes, “Has the positive selection pressure producers have placed on WW EPDs resulted in an increase in the average weaning weight reported to the RAAA?” To answer this question, we can simply calculate the average adjusted weaning weight (adjusted to 205 days of age) for each birth year and compare those averages against the average WW EPDs published by RAAA, which is presented in Table 4. Observations: • The average 205-day adjusted weaning weight re62 American Red Angus Magazine ■ January 2018

ported by members has definitely increased over the last few decades, as has the average WW EPD of registered animals. • The degree of agreement between the increases in average adjusted weaning weight and weaning weight EPD is quite remarkable. • Recall that RAAA operates under Total Herd Reporting, which requires members to report the weaning performance of the entire herd and not just the animals with enough performance to justify the costs of a registration certificate. Thus, the average weaning weights included in Table 4 truly reflect the entire registered Red Angus population. Bottom line: Positive selection pressure has increased weaning weights. Genetic Trend Data The previous evaluation validated that increases in WW EPD resulted in related increases in average adjusted weaning weights for registered Red Angus animals, thus supporting the value and use of EPDs as measures of genetic merit. Knowing that EPDs were not available in the early years of RAAA’s history, one has to wonder how much genetic change was made in WW genetic merit when the selection tools were limited to actual or adjusted weaning weights?

Red Angus EPDs Provide Reliable Genetic Selection Tools The genetic trend (average EPD per birth year) for RAAA growth traits is displayed on Table 5 (page 48), along with the dates in which new selection tools were released to RAAA members and stakeholders. Observations: • Between 1954 and 1974, breeders were limited to using actual or adjusted weaning weights as a means of making genetic improvement. Table 5 indicates that the genetic change made during this period was actually an unfavorable change. • In 1974, RAAA released within-herd Estimated Breeding Values (EBVs), which were similar to EPDs but, due to their calculation, they were limited to within-herd comparisons. As breeders began to use the within-herd EBVs, limited positive changes to weaning and yearling weight were observed. • Following the release of EPDs in 1979, a tremendous increase in WW and YW genetic merit has been documented. • Table 5 shows EPD-based selection decisions are

Table 5.

the most effective in making genetic change as compared to basic tools such as adjusted weights or ratios. Bottom line: EPD-based selection decisions are effective in genetic advancements. To learn more about the reliability of Red Angus EPDs, visit redangus.org/genetics. ■

Do you Run a Business or Have a Hobby? by Kenny Stauffer, Top Dollar Angus® General Manager

$ ®

When asked if you run a business or have a hobby, I know most all of you would answer, “Business.” Let’s look into that. There is nothing that ranchers hate worse than paperwork. It is the last thing we want to do when we get home in the evenings, let alone schedule time for during the day. We all know our AI breeding schedules, calving dates, weaning and shipping dates a year in advance, but records get left until the absolute last minute and then we throw something together. So, if we are all running a business, how do we know where to improve or adjust without the proper business records (i.e. Unit Cost of Production or Production Scoring)? I know there are many operations that have superior business plans and know their expenses to the penny, but if you are not one of those producers, let’s look at one area of measurement that is very eye opening and can make huge changes to any operation – Individual Female Production Scoring. “Cattle producers must become business people who specialize in cattle, rather than cattle producers who function only occasionally as business people.” This is a quote that one of my college professors and good friend uses regularly with his Production Management students. Now for all of you to get the whole Individual Production Scoring System imbedded in your mind, I need you to look at every female as a single factory on your operation. If that factory is not running efficiently and profitable, you must shut her down (cull) or make changes that will allow for her to optimize her yearly inputs. I understand that every operation is unique and has different requirements, so we will start with some basics that are easy to measure but critical for any operation’s factory. The best part about this unit of measurement is that it only requires two tools; a scale and a willing body to keep track of records. 70 American Red Angus Magazine ■ January 2018

Growth Scores 1. Average Daily Gain (ADG) – This is a very simple figure that can vary greatly amongst your herd. This number is going to tell you how many pounds per day your factory produced from the time she gives birth until the day you wean her calf. To be accurate with this figure you must get a birth weight within the first six hours of life (do not use a hoof tape). This equation would look something like this: (BW = 72 pounds, WW = 605 pounds, Age = 215 days) (605-72)/215= 2.48 pounds per day 2. Total Pounds Weaned – Most cattle producers know annually what their calves will average when they wean. That is great to know, but wouldn’t it be nice to know which factories are your best and which one’s are costing your operation year after year? Pounds are what we all get paid on when we sell cattle and we need the to know if we are optimizing the factory’s potential based on the resources provided. I personally don’t believe that you should ever adjust your weaning weights when you Production Score your herd. Why would you give a cow an advantage for calving late, by adjusting her score to be equal to all the other early calves? All that adjusting WW will tell you is what she could have done if she calved earlier – but she didn’t. If she calves late and weans you a lighter calf, that’s what she needs to be scored on because that’s what she produced. This will penalize your lower fertile cows and begin to weed them out of your system. 3. Percent of Body Weight Weaned – I feel this measurement might be the most important, but very few producers use this on their operation for selection purposes. When you measure Percent of Body Weight Weaned, you are measuring efficiency. Your factories should be weaning between 55 to 60 percent of their total weight.

Do you Run a Business or Have a Hobby? If you will, consider what your annual cow cost is to run each factory for a year. Now consider what the economic loss to your bottom line is if 15 percent of those factories are costing you a $100 per factory to keep in production because they are requiring (eating) more than they are producing. By looking at this on a per-head basis, you will quickly see the cows that are costing you and who are the rock stars! Once you can get a score for each of these measurements, break your herd into thirds based on the scores. Top Third = 3 points Middle Third = 2 points Bottom Third = 1 point Once you assign every cow her score for each growth category, you will then add them together. A cow scoring a 9 will be in the top third of your herd and a cow scoring a 3 would be at the bottom of your production and costing your operation money. Once you begin Production Scoring your herd, you will be amazed of the results and more than likely this will be an eye-opening experience. I would suggest adding a few other categories such as a score for feet and leg structure, docility,

72 American Red Angus Magazine n January 2018

udder and teat scoring and longevity. Don’t make this too difficult – use a simple number range based on desirable or undesirable traits. You will find scoring systems for both feet and udder scoring from your breed association that can help with determining what is most desirable. The Production Scoring data and physical records that you begin to accumulate should be highly considered when selecting replacement heifers. You want females from your best producing factories! Records, Records, Records. I cannot stress this enough to our producers! Please contact a Top Dollar Angus representative today to help with your herd’s Genetic Certification and marketing needs. We will help you get premiums for your high genetics. All we need to get your herd Top Dollar Angus qualified is either six years of registration numbers for all sires used on your operation or for 25 percent of your herd to be DNA tested. n Kenny Stauffer Top Dollar Angus General Manager 720-925-5906 kenny@topdollarangus.com

What Do Feeders Want? It’s Not All About Hide Color by Brandi Buzzard Frobose, RAAA Communications Coordinator, with assistance from Gary Fike, RAAA Director of Commercial Marketing

Ask any number of feedyard owners what they value in incoming cattle and you’re likely to get a host of answers as broad and varied as the seven seas. Some like them weaned for 45 days, others insist upon nothing less than 60 days. A few have very specific guidelines for vaccinations and preconditioning, while others will vaccinate and deworm upon arrival. But one thing that many agree on is that hide color isn’t the top priority. Sage advice for sure. Scott Keeling, owner of Keeling Cattle Feeders in Hereford, Texas, attests the fact that everybody wants the red steers and when it comes time to market finished cattle, it’s very easy to market reds, blacks and smutnosed cattle. In fact, Keeling adds that he receives multiple inquiries on the reds in his feedyard. These come from packer buyers looking to purchase finished cattle with quality and yield. John Schroeder, who manages Darr Feedlot in Cozad, Nebraska, doesn’t let hide color guide his decisions on which cattle to buy and which to pass over. “You can go too far with any trait, as a rancher. Calving ease and hide color have dominated the industry too much. Calving ease has created smaller calves that don’t allow me to take cattle as far as I’d like them to

go, in terms of out-weight. Hide color is a problem in the summer – even being in an area with lower humidity the weather won’t forgive me on black cattle, without adding more management expenses to handle summer heat.”

there’s more to raising great feeder cattle than hide color, so what else do feedyard operators want in their incoming calves?

Traverse south approximately 250 miles to Hy-Plains Feedyard in Montezuma, Kansas, and manager Tom Jones says that known genetics, not hide color, are part of his risk management program.

“The more cows you have on your ranch, the greater your flexibility to send a whole pen of cattle. If you are a smaller rancher with smaller numbers, you need to make sure to tighten up your calving period so you have less sorting. Additionally, smaller ranchers can work together and make their cattle more similar, which will increase the value you receive.”

“If I am running with known genetics, I don’t really care what their hide color is. There are so many good seedstock producers out there and the commercial ranchers can benefit from them and their offerings. Good genetics are reliable and predictable.” Obviously, breeders, commercial producers and feeders understand

78 American Red Angus Magazine ■ January 2018

Schroeder believes that group size matters, to a point.

One factor that smaller breeders should consider is efficiency and working together with ranchers with similar genetics and management styles.

What Do Feeders Want? It’s Not All About Hide Color Schroeder said, “It’s not about big guys versus small guys. It’s about efficiencies. Smaller operators need to work with someone else to get bigger marketing groups, which will help you on sale day as a smaller rancher. If you have to buy a 10 ml vaccine bottle and only use 3 ml, then your cost increases. But if you have larger numbers, you spread your costs out and are more efficient. All categories of costs are that way.” While Schroeder is less particular about hide color, he and Darr Feedlot have built a detailed vaccination protocol that they prefer all incoming calves receive. For example, Schroeder prefers three rounds of intranasal and/or injectable doses of a modified-live vaccine for virals, two rounds of Pasteurella, Manhemia, Histophilus, one to two rounds of

Clostridial and pinkeye as needed, along with being dewormed two to three times. Schroeder stressed, “The important piece is to talk with your veterinarian on building immunity to diseases cattle are most likely to come in contact with throughout stages of their life.” Simply put – plan the plan, then work the plan. Similarly, Keeling prefers to buy cattle that have had two rounds of vaccines, particularly Pasteurella, BRD complex as a modified-live and clostridials. Jones is also a proponent of a modified-live vaccine program, but encourages producers to work with their veterinarian to identify what protocol best fits their operation.

80 American Red Angus Magazine n January 2018

While health, hide color and weight all factor into the marketability of calves, these feedyard operators want producers to know that weaning length is crucially important. In fact, Jones and Keeling agree that 60 days minimum weaning length is the ticket to attracting their business as buyers of large numbers of feeder calves. Combining vaccination protocols with good management practices, while providing calves proper nutrition and a good mineral program, will certainly pave the way for success and overall improved wellbeing for calves at the feedyard. This article is the first in a two-part series focused on sharing insight into what makes calves attractive to feedyard operators. n

Gains Captured Through Lost Opportunities; More Work Ahead by Jesse Fulton, National Cattlemen’s Beef Association, and Deb VanOverbeke, Ph.D., Oklahoma State University

In 1990, Chuck Lambert, then the economist for the National Cattlemen’s Association, sought to identify ways the beef industry was missing the boat when it came to maximizing profits. His research concluded that the industry was losing almost $12 billion a year due to inefficiencies – about $458 per head. His “Lost Opportunities in Beef Production” study led to some significant steps by the industry to improve efficiencies and gain back some of the lost profits. The biggest step was the establishment of the National Beef Quality Audit (NBQA) in 1991, a comprehensive beef checkoff-funded study that included several different types of research that captured both data and attitudes about beef. Early NBQAs focused on the physical attributes of beef and beef by-products – marbling, external fat, carcass weight and carcass blemishes. The research has evolved to include food safety, sustainability, animal well-being and the growing disconnect between producers and consumers (see Table 1.). As a result, over the past 25 years, NBQA results have provided an increasingly meaningful set of information from which to improve production and marketing. Data from the 2016 National Beef Quality Audits – for fed steers and heifers, and market cows and bulls – have added significantly to the core knowledge that was gained from the audits that preceded it. The audits contained research that featured three major elements: Face-to-Face Interviews These interviews provided understanding of what quality means to the various industry sectors, and the value of the quality attributes. This research helps the industry make modifications necessary to increase the value of its products.

Among the findings in 2016 from the 194 interviews of beef purchasers were that for both the steer-heifer and cow-bull industries, food safety is the key quality factor. For some, it is an implied part of doing business. Also, important for those in the fed steer-heifer research was size consistency in beef boxes. Furthermore, large carcasses seem to be making it harder for further processors to meet customer specifications for thickness and weights. While end users said they can accept an increase in size, they cannot accept variation of size within a box because it makes it hard for them to market the product. Many companies in the interviews were willing to pay a premium for guaranteed quality attributes, but the average premiums they were willing to pay were lower than in 2011. Tenderness and flavor continue to be the two beef quality factors that drive customer satisfaction. Beef Quality Assurance is not a recognized leader in consumer-facing channels, and this was evident in the 2011 NBQA, too. On the cow and bull side, it is becoming apparent that fewer beef buyers, especially in retail and food service, truly understand the types of cattle from which their products are being sourced. This is an area in which the beef industry can do a better job – helping beef buyers understand the products they’re purchasing.

Gains Captured Through Lost Opportunities; More Work Ahead In-Plant Research \

The bottom line is that while total cattle slaughtered is the lowest in years, total beef production has increased. The fed steer and heifer research showed that there was a dramatic increase in the frequency of Prime and Choice, and a decrease in the frequency of Select. One of the reasons for this is the increase in dairy-type carcasses. While the greatest proportion of carcasses were within the lowest third of the grade for Choice and Prime, most qualifying for Select were in the top half of the grade.

Examinations from within the plants compared data from 2016 with that of previous surveys to assess progress in improving quality. It also provided another benchmark for future beef industry educational and research efforts. The 2016 research for fed steers and heifers showed that while the industry is improving the quality of beef being produced, that quality is being accompanied by an increase in size and fatness. It also showed that since 1991 there has been a continued increase in hot carcass weight.

Gains Captured Through Lost Opportunities; More Work Ahead For market cows and bulls, transportation and cattle mobility were key elements of the research. It was found that, averaged across all trailer types, sufficient space in trailers was generally provided, as outlined by the Animal Handling Guidelines. However, when analyzing potbelly trailer data alone, sufficient space was not provided. This indicates more work is needed to ensure adequate space is provided on potbelly trailers when transporting market cows and bulls.

Over the past 10 years, significant improvements in market cow and bull soundness has been demonstrated. Since 2007 there has been a 3.3 percentage point increase in sound beef cows, a 24.6 percentage point increase in sound dairy cows, and a 14.2 percentage point increase in sound beef bulls. Despite the positive soundness findings for cows, it’s important for producers to be mindful of the advantage of culling cows before lameness is observed whenever possible.

For all cattle types in the market cow and bull research (beef cows, beef bulls, dairy cows and dairy bulls), the majority of cattle walked normally with no apparent lameness. This compared favorably with results from previous cow and bull audits. Overall, mobility research for both classes of cattle would suggest the bar is set high for future audits.

Meanwhile, prevalence of mud in market cows and bulls was noticeably lower in 2016 than it was in 2007, suggesting industry improvements in removing mud from hides prior to harvest. The presence of brands on cows and bulls was also lower in 2016.

In the fed steer-heifer research, more cattle had no brands or horns. There were fewer cattle without bruising – but the bruising found was less severe. There were more liver, lung and viscera condemnations, but fewer head and tongue condemnations.

Since audits were first instituted, reducing injection site lesions has been a key area of interest – and one of the industry’s most compelling success stories. In 2017, additional research was conducted at seven plants that had been audited in 2016 to determine the presence of injection site lesions in cow and bull rounds based on a slice audit procedure that had been used in a 1998-2000 audit.

Gains Captured Through Lost Opportunities; More Work Ahead The research demonstrated a further reduction of 13 percentage points in beef-type carcasses and 20 percentage point reduction in dairy-type carcasses since that previous audit. Strategy Session At a Strategy Session in December 2016, more than 70 individuals representing every sector of the beef industry met to review results of the research and discuss industry implications. Outcomes from that meeting provide quality guidance to the industry for the next five years. One essential need identified by this group was for greater education and communication of BQA to the supply chain and consumers, and how increased certification of BQA followers could enhance respect for the program. Participants on the fed steer and heifer side provided guidance on what kinds of industry improvements could be made in food safety and animal health, eating quality and reduction of variety, and optimizing value and eliminating waste. Those reviewing the

96 American Red Angus Magazine â– January 2018

market cow and bull beef supply identified needs for more timeliness in the marketing of animals; appropriate changes to placement and size of brands; addressing the appropriate site for injections; greater coordination to ensure promotion of BQA principles; more effective communication about animals that are not fit for transport; and diligence in educating on BQA principles. More Work to Do

Although the beef industry has worked since 1991 to significantly improve the quality of its product, there’s always room for improvement in terms of reducing the number and severity of lost opportunities. The 2016 NBQAs for Fed Steers and Heifers and Market Cows and Bulls demonstrate the truth of this statement.

Gains Captured Through Lost Opportunities; More Work Ahead In the 2016 NBQA for Fed Steers and Heifers, cattlemen and women could find a reason to appreciate the excellent mobility scores for animals going into the plant, as well as the increasing prevalence of Choice and Prime carcasses. The audit also acknowledged the decrease in cattle with hide brands, and the decreased presence of horns. However, it was apparent that further improvement is needed with liver condemnations and seeking to better understand the causes of liver abscesses, as well as reducing the number of carcasses with bruising. For market cows and bulls, significant improvements have been made in animal mobility, soundness and bruise severity. Even more progress can be made, however, through greater focus on food safety, appropriate management to increase muscle condition before harvest, culling animals before physical defects are severe, implementing measures to eliminate bruising, effectively communicating with those who transport or purchase animals about their right to refuse to transport or purchase, reducing defects and emphasizing producer education in the BQA program.

98 American Red Angus Magazine â– January 2018

In fact, an important strategy for improved industry health and success was evident in the research: utilizing BQA and its principles to increase consumer confidence and enhance industry commitment would encourage greater beef demand, and improve industry harmonization. Carrying this BQA message throughout the industry all the way to consumers would benefit every audience. We encourage you to read the full Executive Summaries of both the NBQA for Steers and Heifers and NBQA for Market Cows and Bulls. They can be found on the Beef Quality Assurance website at www.bqa.org. â–

Ranchers Must Clear the Air of Production Falsehoods When critics of livestock agriculture take aim at the beef industry and its impact on the environment, cattlemen can’t afford to run, hide or sit idle. Dr. Frank Mitloehner, professor and air quality specialist in cooperative extension at the University of California – Davis, knows firsthand how scientific data has been manipulated to demonize livestock agriculture. The strategy to fight those misperceptions? Learn the facts about your cattle production methods and then get to work defending them. “The media is just full of articles portraying the livestock industries in a very negative way,” Mitloehner said at the Global Roundtable for Sustainable Beef Communicators Summit in Denver, Colorado. “I think the beef industry – like any other livestock industry – should be well educated on the topic whether or not you believe in [sustainability], because your customers do.” Mitloehner went to the forefront of the debate in 2006 when the Food and Animal Organization of the U.N. (FAO) released the report “Livestock’s Long Shadow,” which reported that livestock producers created 18 percent of all human-related greenhouse gas, a larger share of emissions than what is created by all of transportation. “And if that sounded fishy to you, it sounded fishy to us,” Mitloehner said. He and other scientists tackled the report and found major mistakes. The biggest was that two different models were used to assess livestock ag and transportation. Livestock had a life-cycle assessment, showing the environmental footprint for a gallon of milk and a pound of beef, in which “you look at everything from the soil, to the crops that eventually become feed, to the animals, then the manure [and] manure being applied to soil again, the transportation of the product to supermarket or to restaurant.”

by Progressive Cattleman Editor David Cooper

showing transportation with much greater impact than initially reported, the media are slow to acknowledge the change and continue targeting animal agriculture.

Dr. Frank Mitloehner presents a slide at the Global Roundtable for Sustainable Beef in Denver. Photo by David Cooper.

FAO did that for livestock, but they didn’t do that for transportation. “In other words, they didn’t look at the environmental footprint of producing the steel, the rubber, the roads, the harbors, the airports, getting the oil out of the ground in Saudi Arabia and shipping it to Texas, refining it, getting it to the gas stations and then burning it in your car. But they only looked at burning the gas in your car.” Such a classic apples-to-oranges comparison, Mitloehner said, can’t be valid when saying livestock emit more greenhouse than transportation or energy. Those who wrote the U.N. report even admitted the criticism was valid. Mitloehner and other colleagues responded with another report, “Clearing the Air, Livestock’s Contribution to Climate Change,” and found that livestock agriculture in developed nations such as the U.S. is significantly lower in greenhouse gas emissions. According to EPA data, livestock production emits just 3.4 percent of greenhouse gas in the U.S. compared with 26 percent from transportation. Speaking of the FAO and its revisions, Mitloehner said, “I give them a lot of credit, because who in the world makes a mistake and goes out in public and tells the world?” The issue, however, is that with revisions

106 American Red Angus Magazine ■ January 2018

“The problem is that a lot of the media outlets that have loved that 18 percent number, and who have loved the comparison of livestock to transportation, have not accepted what the authors of that report acknowledge themselves,” Mitloehner said. “They still put out that 18 percent. You read it up until this day.” Facing the Definitions Mitloehner doesn’t believe today’s producers win any arguments by shirking from science and data proving the reality of climate change. “Do I believe climate change exists? The answer is yes. There has always been heating and cooling through the world’s history. What is different now from the past, recent heating trends have been more frequent and more intense, and the most recent concentrations of some of the greenhouse gas have far exceeded normal levels.” Greenhouse gas molecules trap heat, which makes the planet habitable. But gas levels have exceeded normal ranges as carbon and fossil fuels are extracted and burned. The EPA has reported transportation creates 27 percent of greenhouse gas, with energy production and use going up to 33 percent. “The entire agriculture sector, both animal and plant, makes up about 10 percent,” Mitloehner said, with livestock ag producing 3.8 percent. “So, to say livestock exceed vehicle emissions, that is not true. And the first ones to tell you that are the EPA folks, the agency there to generate emissions inventory. They will be your biggest friends. Use them.”

Ranchers Must Clear the Air of Production Falsehoods

Food Choice Campaigns Mitloehner said the public is being sold a fraud on Meatless Monday campaigns, when they claim that one less burger reduces one-seventh of emissions. “It misleads the public to believe our food choices are the No. 1 contributor to these issues. Food choices matter, but they don’t come close to what you drive.” If consumers wanted to tackle a food choice that can improve sustainability, Mitloehner said food waste is the bigger culprit. “Forty percent of the food produced in the U.S. goes to waste, and the same number holds true throughout the world.” Global waste is more related to harvest ability, equipment and transportation to the market. But in the U.S., it’s more related to sale-by stamps on food.

“We’re wasting a lot of food,” Mitloehner said. “When you think about the entire

food supply chain, this is the worst atrocity we have to deal with right now. Everybody would agree this is not tolerable for a society like ours.” Sustainability of Modern Agriculture Mitloehner’s research shows that modern agricultural tools and production are critical to reducing air emissions from livestock. Farming and ranching in developed nations is far ahead of developing countries in sustainable practices. And where population growth and food demand are growing fastest are in those nations that need to learn from U.S. production methods. “There is a strong relationship between efficiency and productivity of livestock to sustainability. “A cow that produces very little milk has a greater carbon footprint than one that produces more milk. It’s basically like a car sitting idle.”

With fewer dairy cows and fewer beef cattle than in previous decades, the U.S. is producing more milk and still producing the same amount of beef. “And what has allowed us to go down to 9 million dairy cows? What has led to going down to 90 million beef cattle? Improved reproduction, improved veterinary care – that’s vaccinations or prevention of disease – improved animal genetics and the feeding of more energy-dense diets. This concert of tools has allowed us to shrink the number of animals needed to produce a given amount of food. It’s that simple.” Beef producers have a role to explain those efficiencies with the experience and change they’ve seen on their ranches. “You have to be a compassionate folk that you really are, and not be scared of [critics]. I find that the normal rancher and farmer has the greatest credibility out there, if he or she is able and willing to say what they do and why.” n
