Ability to ADAPT is Key to Progress As I write this, I am sitting in Phoenix, Arizona, after attending the 2018 Cattle Industry Convention and NCBA Trade Show. One of the key speakers at this year’s convention was Jim Abbott, a former Major League baseball pitcher who played despite having been born without a right hand. Jim’s speech was very inspirational and uplifting. Despite challenges, Jim went on to pitch for the 1988 Gold Medal Olympic Team and he also pitched a memorable 4-0 no-hitter for the New York Yankees versus Cleveland in September of 1993. Jim spoke to us about how to be able to adapt and to make small changes in order to move forward in today’s world. In fact, he used the acronym A.D.A.P.T. which stands for: • Adjustability • Determination • Accountability • Perseverance • Trust As I listened to Jim, I realized that we, as Red Angus seedstock suppliers and commercial cattle producers, could certainly benefit from his lesson. I was able to relate his acronym to Red Angus producers.

Adjustability We need to be able to adjust our commercial marketing techniques to the ever-changing markets. The Thursday morning seminar was presented by CattleFax and one of the most memorable quotes from that seminar was, “Looking forward, change will never again be as slow as it is today!” Thinking about this past year and a few of the Superior Livestock sales I attended, it was not uncommon to see variances of over $20 per cwt within weight classes on different loads of cattle. That can be $100 to $140 per head on the most common weights! These variances were mostly due to differing value-added programs such as the Red Angus FCCP, documented herd health, NHTC, high-quality genetics and Top Dollar Angus. If you aren’t utilizing several of these “value adders,” maybe this year you need to adjust a little and offer more to your buyers. I had one prominent cattle buyer tell me, “When looking at different sets of cattle, higher quality genetics, along with stronger documented health and greater value-added programs, give me the confidence to bid more. These options offered by the seller, drive value in high or low markets, each and every year!” Determination Nearly everyone reading this column is al-

ready using Red Angus to produce genetics that are at the top of the demand list for cattle feeders and for that, we are ahead of the curve. Next we need to utilize all of the great marketing opportunities the RAAA has at our disposal – FCCP, FeederFax, Red Angus Stockyard on the website, Fe-Mail, Allied Access, Top Dollar Angus and the newly released Premium Red Baldy. All of these programs are there to help us and, with a little determination, all WILL help. Accountability This one stands to reason. If we all deliver the best possible product to the feeders and packers and hold ourselves accountable for that quality, it is a win-win. Don’t fool yourself into thinking that feeders don’t remember which calves are the healthiest or most uniform, or which ones have the best feed efficiency or the best carcass quality. They do remember – and they also remember which ones fail in any of those categories. If you hold yourself accountable on delivery day and send the best cattle you can, they will remember you next year when your calves are for sale again. Perseverance It is never too early to start marketing your next calf crop. It is also never too late to keep marketing this year’s crop. Utilize all of the tools available to you and always purchase the best Red Angus bulls you can afford. Remember that better bulls make better calves and better calves keep everyone down the chain happy. Always look in the mirror and ask yourself “What can I do better?” Never become complacent!

Trust Trust is the key to all relationships. This is always true in your personal life, but it is also always true in your profession. We need to trust ourselves as well as those that are helping us succeed. If you don’t trust your buyer, maybe it is time to shop around for someone you do trust. The same holds true for your bull supplier or your feed salesperson or your fertilizer company or your machinery dealer. Trust is a key element in all aspects of your life and if you surround yourself with people you trust, you will be more successful in the long run. Listening to Jim Abbott’s speech was very inspirational for me. It really made me think about our ability to adapt. It made me think that there is always someone else out there who may be facing the same issues that I am, or possibly worse struggles, and if we just adapt ourselves, we can do anything we set our minds to. ■

Breed Building is a Team Sport

March is a month that makes people think about college basketball. Ranchers have feeding, calving, readying for the upcoming breeding season, and plenty of other work to get done. However, many cattlemen will catch a game or two, especially if their favorite team makes the NCAA “March Madness” Tournament.

Committees Committees are populated by members, and in a few cases, by outside experts willing to contribute their time at no cost. Committee members are selected and confirmed by the Board. Each committee is charged with providing ideas and recommendations to the Board in specific areas. A list of committee members is available on RedAngus.org. Association Commentary More often than not, Board votes follow committee recommendations.

Board of Directors The Board of Directors has oversight responsibility for all aspects of the Association. They approve the annual budget, which contains many specific line-item expenses, as well as projected revenues. They set policy for the operation of Association business and are continually updated on how the business is performing. Individual directors are elected to three-year terms by the membership on a rotating basis. Elections take place at the RAAA Annual Convention. Directors can be re-elected to serve a second, threeyear term. In this way, Red Angus operates with representative governance. The membership elects Board directors to represent them in all Association matters. Employees Employees have the responsibility of

conducting the day-to-day work at RAAA. They work closely with the Board and its committees. They also interact with hundreds of members each week. It’s their job to carry out the wishes of the Board and to follow the policy and rules of the Association. Employees cover a lot of territory across the industry and are often a good source of information for the Board regarding emerging trends. Each member of the Red Angus team has a purpose to fulfill.

Committees in Action A recent example of two RAAA committees “scoring points for the team” took place in Denver on January 6. The Breed Improvement and Technical Committees met together to discuss the topic of bio-economic selection indexes. Dr. Ken Odde, recently retired Animal Science Department Head at Kansas State University, served as facilitator. After more than four hours of discussion and several presentations, the meet-

ing ended with a recommendation that will be carried forward to the Board of Directors (many of whom were also in attendance). It is somewhat rare for committees to meet face-to-face. Conference calls are the preferred, least-expensive and most-efficient method of getting a geographically dispersed group together. But in this case, a joint committee meeting was timed with other Red Angus events in conjunction with the National Western Stock Show and the grand opening of the new office in Commerce City, Colorado. The pictures of this meeting are symbolic of how the RAAA membership, through its committee structure and Board of Directors, works together to move the breed forward. Breed building is definitely a team sport, and it is always great to see members “on the court” doing their part to advance the breed. ■

Marketing Update by Chessie Mitchell, Tag Programs Coordinator

Enroll your Spring Calves Early!

As most ranchers know, calving season can be one of the most stressful, yet rewarding times of the year. While you are busy worrying about cows in the pasture, it is easy to forget about marketing your calves months down the road. The Red Angus Marketing Programs allow you to capitalize on your Red Angus investments. Calving season is an opportune time to consider adding the Red Angus marketing programs to your ranch’s arsenal to boost the bottom line. Producing calves that reap premiums in the marketplace starts by using value-added tag programs. The first tag option is for cattlemen and women using registered Red Angus bulls. The Feeder Calf Certification Program FCCP enrolls calves in the industry’s most experienced genetic, source and age, USDA-process-verified program. The program is unlike any other age- and source-verification program. The “yellow” tag allows for the industry’s only marketing claim to at least 50 percent registered Red Angus bloodlines. Red Angus producers enrolling in the program will be able to have access to many Angus product lines. This past fiscal year, the program experienced an 18 percent growth increase compared to the previous year. This growth is not surprising considering the tremendous return on investment that producers are experiencing with this no-enrollment fee, 99-cent tag program. Recently, research has shown that FCCP-tagged calves garner a $2.75 premium per cwt compared to non-tagged Red Angus-influenced calves. This calculates to a $16 advantage per head on a 6-weight calf – that’s a $1,320 difference on a pot load of FCCP-tagged calves compared to a pot load of non-tagged Red Angus calves. With premiums like this, commercial producers should waste no time enrolling in the program.

How to enroll:

1. Make the call. Contact Red Angus at 940-387-3502, Ext. 2, to go through a short rancher-friendly supplier enrollment questionnaire over the phone. The phone interview is required and email ordering is not allowed. Red Angus will ask general management, animal identification and breeding program questions to verify program eligibility. 2. Provide special documentation (only when needed). For AI-sired calves, provide receipts of semen purchases/collections. In the case of purchased bred females, a signed invoice/bill of sale stating the number of head and breeding status (including service sires). 3. Purchase tags. Upon completing the evaluation, tags will be shipped to the ranch in bundles of 25. Either visual (dangle) tags costing 99¢ each or combination visual & RFID tags priced at $3 each. 4. Tag calves. Tag calves at anytime – birth, branding, preconditioning, weaning – but they must be tagged before they leave the ranch of origin. Leftover ear tags can be used on the next enrolled calf crop. 5. Fill out the enrollment form that comes in the box with the tags. The producer will receive a customer enrollment agreement to complete and return with a copy of the first page of the calving record. This will allow RAAA to verify the group age on the calves and the tag numbers used. 6. Receive the Certificate of Compliance. Upon submission of the customer enrollment agreement and calving record, a USDA-approved certificate of conformance (COC) will be issued from the RAAA office. 7. Enroll each calf crop you want to tag.

The second tag option is for producers in a planned crossbreeding program. The Allied Access program delivers age and source verification through the USDA process-verified program. The program provides a solution to Red Angus customers’ crossbreeding programs utilizing multiple breeds, hybrids or composites. The Allied Access “green” tag incorporates age and source verifications without the genetic boundaries of the FCCP. The Red Angus tag programs have no enrollment fees. The panel tag is only 99¢ and the combo set (panel & electronic ID) is available for $3. Unique imprints are available for customers as well. This past spring, Red Angus switched to Allflex USA tags as our new tag supplier. This does mean that the Allflex USA Total Tagger is required. For further information on the Red Angus tagging programs, visit RedAngus.org. To enroll, contact Chessie Mitchell, FCCP tag program coordinator, at 940-387-3502, Ext. 2, or chessie@redangus.org. n

Leading Beef Breed Associations Partner to Release “Premium Red Baldy” Program by Brandi Buzzard Frobose, Director of Communications

Two of the largest beef breed associations in the U.S. have teamed up to offer commercial cattlemen a groundbreaking, genetically verified program to improve their bottom line.

The Red Angus Association of America and the American Hereford Association are proud to inRAAA CEO Tom Brink discusses the advantroduce the “Premium Red Baldy” tages of the “Premium program, designed to capitalize Red Baldy” joint venture. on the best traits from both breeds while developing supreme quality commercial females. RAAA CEO Tom Brink and AHA Executive Vice President Jack Ward announced the new initiative at the 2018 Cattle Industry Convention and NCBA Trade Show in Phoenix. At The Red Reception, a special breeder’s event held to commemorate the joint venture, Brink said, “Both Red Angus and Hereford are committed to the success of commercial cow-calf producers, and we believe the pathway to profitability begins with having the right genetics in the cow herd. This new program will help producers access genetically verified females that are packed with heterosis and ready to go to work on farms and ranches all across the country. It all starts with the right cow traits, and Premium Red Baldy females will excel in that regard.” “AHA is honored to join Red Angus to introduce the Premium Red Baldy program that identifies genetically supe-

rior F-1 females,” Ward said. “The AHA and RAAA are the only two breed associations that implement a mandatory whole herd reporting performance program which gives strength and reliability to their respective genetic evaluations.” Premium Red Baldy is a tagging program designed to take advantage of hybrid vigor by maximizing the best traits of both breeds and providing commercial producers with premium replacement females. This program, targeting only heifers, will generate females for the commercial producer by emphasizing longevity, fertility, adaptability and efficiency. This partnership of powerhouse breeds promises to elevate the best genetics from each, and will build better F-1 females to further the beef industry. To take advantage of the program, producers must verify that eligible females are sired by AHA or RAAA registered and transferred bulls. The bulls must also rank in the top 50 percent of their respective breed for AHA’s Baldy Maternal Index (BMI$) or RAAA’s HerdBuilder Index (HB). Targeted breed percentages will range from 25 to 75 percent for both breeds, with the balance being the alternate breed. Cattlemen and women should call their respective breed association office to verify females and order Allflex™ tags for the program. Tags will be shipped to the producer upon completion of a satisfactory phone interview and only enough tags will be shipped to match the number of redbodied and white- or brockle-faced females born on the operation. Premium Red Baldy is not a Process Verified Program (PVP) through the USDA. n

For more information about the Premium Red Baldy program, please contact Trey Befort, AHA director of commercial programs, at tbefort@herefordbeef.org or Chessie Mitchell, RAAA tag program coordinator, at chessie@redangus.org.

The most exciting sire to surface in 2017, Fantastic earned headlines when he sold for $100,000 at the R.A. Brown Ranch March Bull Sale. He stands alone as the only Red Angus animal that has a “Fantastic” 15 CED (-7.8 BW) to 118 YW spread combined with his breed leading maternal and carcass traits. Plus he proved to be one of the most feed efficient animals we have ever tested. His maternal brother is the $36,000 Brown Oracle B112 who is proving to be a multi-trait breed leader for growth, carcass, and power. Their dam was the $26,000 high selling donor at the 2017 Front Pasture Female Sale and she too has an unmatchable EPD profile for all economically relevant traits including a 232 Herdbuilder Index and ranks in the top 1% of the breed in 5 traits.

Member Services Update Freshen up on all DNA Requirements before the purchase and use of bulls (AI and Natural), or flushing and placement of embryos of donor females.

Many of the DNA requirements are overlooked or misunderstood about what needs to be accomplished so that offspring can meet a full registered status. Until an animal has meet all requirements, a registration certificate cannot be printed, a transfer cannot take place or the registration of future offspring cannot occur. The main reason these rules are overlooked is due to the DNA rules being required on the parents, and not the calf itself. This would be a different case however if the resulting calf’s’ parent(s) is a carrier of a genetic defect. The best place to review these rules is the Breeders Guide – Rules and Regulations that can be accessed through the website. If specific questions arise on a certain animal please contact the DNA department to discuss further. Late fees on animal transfers can be avoided by completing within 60 days of the sale date. This is a simple as filling out the back of the printed registration paper or completing through REDSPro. Online Bill Pay Available No longer worry about mailing a check to the association to make a payment. The My Account option allows for account history by month(s) to be reviewed/printed, view account balance, and payment to be submitted via debit or credit card. 2018 International birth year letter is ‘F’ Many producers add this letter to the animal ID as an indicator specifically in females that have the same ID number but were born in different years. Example: Dam 123 had a female calf in 2017 and 2018, so her offspring’s ID numbers could be 123E and 123F.

Complete and Incomplete Jobs – What does that mean? Don't forget to check for Complete Jobs and Incomplete Jobs. Complete jobs insure that your data was uploaded/updated. The animals within a completed job should also be reviewed and verified to make sure no additional requires such as DNA are needed to comply with the rules and regulations. Incomplete jobs indicate your job has not yet been processed and could have several issues such as missing information, has errors that need corrected or has an outstanding balance to be paid. Spring 2017 – No Progeny To fulfill THR requirements and avoid possible female reactivation fees, please report a calf record with weaning data or reason code for the cow on Spring 2017 cows on inventory. Members can report data via REDSPro, or request a hard copy report by contacting the National Office. To avoid inactivation, report data to RAAA by April 13. n

The National Western Stock Show is an event that many look forward to and anticipate year after year. There was a great deal of positivity surrounding the Red Angus events that ran from January 4-8. It sure didn’t hurt anything that the weather was absolutely gorgeous in Denver - it rarely dropped below freezing and ranged from 40-50*F in the daytime.

JRA Update

Bouldin Brothers Named JRA Herdsman at the National Western by Genna VanWye, JRA President

Congratulations to Caleb and Ethan Bouldin of Bennett, Colorado. The brothers were recipients of the 2018 National Junior Red Angus Show Herdsman Award at the National Western Stock Show. Their outstanding devotion to hard work, helping out fellow exhibitors, and commitment to the Red Angus breed led them to receive this award. The brothers have been showing Red Angus cattle for six years and typically travel to the National Western Stock Show, Fort Worth Stock Show, Iowa State Fair, Northern International Livestock Exposition, and the North American Junior Red Angus Event, along with nearby jackpots. Ethan and Caleb agreed that their favorite part about exhibiting cattle is the exciting atmosphere, competitiveness and talking to others about their animals. The pair began their Red Angus journey shortly after their grandfather, Joseph Bouldin, passed away, and have been showing in his honor ever since. Their passion and commitment are evident in the successes that they’ve had in their showing careers. They recently exhibited the 2018 Champion Red Angus Bull at the Fort Worth Stock Show and Rodeo. Caleb said of this experience, “We had the chance to meet a lot of cool people, and did well with our heifers also.” The Bouldin brothers

were competitive at the National Western Stock Show as well and Ethan said, “I really enjoy the competitive atmosphere of Denver. Everyone is very focused and brings competitive animals.” Their successes are a result of a family effort. Their dad, Bryan Bouldin, plays a big role in that success. Caleb and Ethan would also like to thank Cheramie Viator, Mandy Fischer, Tim Orr and Ethan Herman for their assistance and instruction. Learning from this group and having fun along the way, Ethan and Caleb have enjoyed their time showing and look forward to continuing their success. JRA Spotlight on Brett Sartin by Brett Sartin

My name is Brett Sartin. I’m a seventhgrade student at a school in southwest Missouri with an addiction to cattle. I am the youngest of three children and the first to show interest in exhibiting cattle. When I began this journey four years ago I knew I didn’t want to compete directly against cousins who show Short-

horns. So, my family began researching other breeds and talked to a lot of producers who were helpful and welcoming of our questions. We chose Red Angus for their easy fleshing and carcass traits. What I especially like is their good disposition. We were also drawn in by the fact that our good friends in Colorado, Ethan and Caleb Bouldin, had started a Red Angus herd of their own. That meant when we travelled we could see and support one another along the way, much like what our dads did as young men on the show trail.

JRA Update Our production plan is simple: buy/raise good females and AI them to top bulls from across the U.S. and Canada. My idea of a good female is not based on her size as much as it is specific EPD numbers, including CED, WW, MILK, CEM and STAY. But if we were talking size, I would say my favorite females are those with good depth of rib and length of spine. Raising a herd that is productive and profitable is a top priority. But I must admit, when I can walk out among the newest offspring and find that special one I can turn into next year’s show animal, I feel like I’ve won the lottery! Showing takes a lot of time and dedication. You get out what you put in. That means washing, blowing, feed-

ing and working with them consistently if you expect them to do good for you in the show ring. It starts with having a good animal, but the herdsman’s knowledge is equally important. That’s one reason I serve on the Missouri Junior Red Angus Board – to build our membership and to provide educational opportunities. My efforts led to being named both the Missouri Cattleman’s and Missouri Club Calf Association’s points leader for 2017. One favored aspect of this sport is the traveling. I especially enjoy the Ozark Empire Fair. The North American Junior Red Angus Event has taken us to some exceptional barns in Illinois and Oklahoma, and this year we head to Kansas. I’m looking forward to attending for the first time the JRA Round-Up being

held in Arkansas. You can bet that I won’t stop there. My long-term goal is to internship in Canada as my time, talents and age allows, and learn from the premiere breeders there as well. You might find this hard to believe. but my favorite part of showing isn’t trying to win – it’s being with cattle friends who have become like family. I’ve met a lot of great people along the way and made many new friends. If I had to choose just one person who has been most influential, it would my FFA advisor, Mr. Matt Crutcher. Even though I’m a year away from being able to join FFA, he is always there with a smile to check out my new calf and give me direction. I appreciate him and want to thank everyone who has supported me.

Round Up Scholarship Opportunities by Kaitlyn Templeton, JRA Director Want to attend Round-Up but don’t know how you are going to afford it? The answer is scholarships! There are many scholarship opportunities available from the Junior Red Angus Association that are strictly for RoundUp. These scholarships include the Commercial Cattlemen's Scholarship, the Heather Presser Memorial Scholarship, and the Merit Scholarship which is three scholarships in one. I have received the Merit Scholarship twice in my years of attending RoundUp. If it wasn’t for this scholarship, I probably would not have attended Round-Up. The Merit Scholarship is a series of questions that get “scored.” Whoever has the highest score out of all

the applicants receives the scholarship in the amount of $750, whoever has the second highest score receives $500 and whoever has the third highest score receives $250. These scholarships are given to put towards travel and registration for Round-Up attendees. The Commercial Cattlemen’s Scholarship is given to a young person with interest in Red Angus and the beef industry from a commercial background

and who is not already a JRA member. The Heather Presser Memorial Scholarship is in loving memory of Troy and Annette Presser’s daughter, Heather, as she was taken from her family in an ATV accident in 2012. This scholarship is given to an involved Junior member to put towards travel and registration. If interested in any of these scholarships, please visit the Junior page at RedAngus.org. n

It’s Tax Time! by Patsy Krause, RAFI Fund Raiser

Recently I met with my accountant to review my income tax information. She asked, “Is that everything? Do you have any other receipts? Deductions?” gains tax first, which reduces the donation (and your tax deduction). By transferring the stock share before selling it, there would not be any capital gains tax and therefore RAFI gets a more valuable contribution and you get more of a deduction.

Those questions got me to thinking, “Did I miss reporting something?” Or, more importantly, did I miss an opportunity by not planning ahead? Was I about to pay more in taxes than I needed to? Giving can be a challenge, especially when money is tight. That makes the idea of financial planning even more important. The fact that giving to charity can help reduce your tax burden is well known, especially if you're in a higher bracket. But the benefits of giving are huge to the receiving charity and the personal benefit to the donor can extend far beyond tax breaks. There are many personal things to consider when planning one’s financial position. There are many ways to give to charity. Many, many different charities to give to and countless personal reasons to give. To simplify this conversation, let’s assume that the Red Angus Foundation Inc. (RAFI) is one of your chosen favorite charities. You agree with our love of the breed and that investment into research and development will help determine ways to improve our breed and that we need to educate our future leaders to continue our works. Let me assure you that RAFI meets the IRS requirements for your donation to be a valid tax deduction. Beyond simply writing a check, there are many other ways you can help RAFI while lowering your tax bill. The IRS gives allowances for many types of donations but it is up to you to save your records and to know which type of gift works best for you.

Sometimes it's harder to quantify the value of non-cash donations, especially items of personal value. But often these non-cash donations are the most important ones an organization receives. RAFI welcomes gifts of all sizes and type. Remember, we have the annual RAFI fundraising auction held each September and donated items make up most of the auctioned items. So your donation of personal items can be of great value to RAFI. Like most charities, RAFI is happy to accept shares of stock or mutual funds. When you donate an asset, you need a record of the value on the day that you donate it. In many cases, donating a stock that has increased in value is a better tax option (and easier gift to give) than contributing the same amount of cash. By donating stocks or mutual funds you can avoid capital gains tax and receive a bigger deduction. You are allowed to claim and write off the entire value of the stock, not just the amount that you paid for it. Think of it this way: You purchased a stock share for $10. Over the years the stock value increased to $100. You decide you want to support RAFI. If you sell the stock and donate the profit, you will have to pay capital

64 American Red Angus Magazine n March 2018

Remember there are many rules and limits when making charitable gifts. Different rules apply in different states and different circumstances. And tax law changes frequently. These are all the more reasons to talk to your financial planners and tax consultants before making any gifts. If you have not already done so, during tax preparations ask your tax professional, “If I had done more charitable giving, could I have reduced my tax liability?” Then ask yourself what charitable issues are most important to me. Hopefully, the advancement of the Red Angus breed is high on your list. Please contact me if I can help with your financial planning or if you have questions about RAFI. n Thank you to the following for their support of RAFI. Your commitment to RAFI and the Red Angus breed is truly appreciated! Hardy Red Angus Cattle Thrive in California Foothills by Anna Miller for American Red Angus Magazine

Nestled in the Central Coast foothills of California lies a Red Angus commercial ranch with a rich history leading five generations back. Sargent Cattle Co. LLC, operated by father-son pair Mike and John Orradre, traces its Red Angus roots to the late 1990s. However, the sprawling 30,000acre ranch located in San Ardo, California, actually had its original start much earlier.

68 American Red Angus Magazine â– March 2018

John Orradre’s great-grandfather Miguel Orradre and his two brothers emigrated from Spain to California as Basque sheepherders looking to settle into new country in 1886, he said. In order to pay for their passage to America, the three brothers were sponsored and tasked with homesteading a section of land for five years. “After selling the homestead back to the sponsors, my great-grandfather was able to purchase the Pancho Rico Ranch in San Ardo in 1906,” Orradre said. “That’s when Orradre Ranch began, and it consisted mostly of sheep at the time.” Orradre Ranch grew through the acquisition of other nearby ranches and properties, and after purchasing an adjacent farmstead from a neighboring politician — Bradley Sargent, who was trying to pay off his political campaign in the 1930s — the brothers began the transition to cattle ranching. Along with the farmstead purchase came its mineral rights, and when oil was found on the property in 1947, the profits helped lead to ranch improvement, John Orradre said.

Sargent Cattle Co. operators John and Mike Orradre are three-time champions of the prestigious Grid Master Award.

Upon the death of Miguel Orradre, the ranch was divided between the children to form separate ranches and the Sargent property went to his grandfather, he said. Sargent Cattle Co. Partnership Mike Orradre began the next generation of ranching when he started his own business in 1967, on the original property and house he had grown up in. Following John Orradre’s graduation from California Polytechnic State University, the pair initiated a partnership in 1995, keeping the original name of the ranch, Sargent Cattle Co. The two men have been working together ever since. “My dad likes the office, I like the sky,” John Orradre joked. Mike Orradre’s father had raised Hereford cattle throughout his childhood, but the Sargent Cattle Co. operators have experimented with a mix of breeds, looking for the best maternal and carcass traits. “At one point, it seemed like we had a bull from just about every breed,” John Orradre said. “But we slowly took that bull-of-the-month club and dispersed it.” The Orradre partners worked their way through several breeds, finally settling on Red Angus in the late ’90s, liking the breed’s maternal traits. John Orradre credits his godfather, Wes O’Reilly, as “a big player helping us get started in the breed” by sharing knowledge and past experiences with Red Angus. Economic Breed The Sargent Cattle Co. herd is strictly Red Angus sired and consists of around 500 females that stay on the hills yearround. “We only buy outside of the herd for our bull seedstock,” Orradre said. “We’ve developed a genetic basis with a closed-female herd.”

American Red Angus Magazine ■ March 2018 69

Hardy Red Angus Cattle Thrive in California Foothills The Orradres are selective on feet and structure for the terrain, and also pay special attention to disposition and fertility. Cows that don’t breed back quickly are culled from the herd, Orradre said. The females are naturally-bred and calve in the fall. “We considered doing AI for the heifers, but we already calve in about a 60-day window naturally,” John Orradre said. Maternal traits, especially calving ease, are a big factor for retaining females and a main focus of the genetic basis of the ranch. The ranch rarely has to pull any calves and selects bulls carefully to avoid assisted births, Orradre said. The red cattle also do great in the conditions of the dry climate and hills of the Monterey County, he said.

Sargent Cattle Co. calves are Red Angus sired and will wear the yellow Red Angus FCCP tag before they are marketed with Meyer Natural Angus.

“They handle the heat extremely well and adapt very quickly,” Orradre said. “No matter the conditions, they always give great milk. They’re very economically feasible, but still have great gains.”

“We’ve been raising natural beef since about 1997 and the FCCP really helps with keeping track of that program,” Orradre said.

Sargent Cattle Co. utilize also the Feeder Calf Certification Program as well as the Meyer Natural Angus program. The ranch won the esteemed Grid Master Award the first year it was eligible, and two more times after that.

Give us a call on this powerful offering. We look forward to seeing you March 4.

Sargent Cattle Co. sells their cattle through private treaty and also has a direct outlet to a feedlot located in Nebraska, which has been buying for more than 10 years from the ranch. The calves are also given booster shots before market, which buyers have thought to be a great asset, Orradre said.

Hardy Red Angus Cattle Thrive in California Foothills “What I like about Red Angus, is the breed has stayed true to its genetic basis,” Orradre said. “Out here we don’t have a ton of other Red Angus breeders, but we get good prices for our cattle and every feedlot likes to feed them. “There’s value in Red Angus,” Orradre added. “As a breeder, you’re giving a different product to sell to a different buyer.” State Challenges Living in California, although one of the most agricultural prosperous areas in the world, is not easy on agriculturalists. “State regulations make it difficult to be a part of the agriculture business,” Mike Orradre said. John Orradre added, “You’re always being scrutinized by a third-party not involved in the industry. It’s hard on everybody. Then you have to factor in fuel cost and labor … It gets to be very expensive.” Another challenge for the ranch is dealing with Foothill abortion, or Epizootic Bovine abortion, caused by the Pajaroello tick. The ticks are found in areas of dry land, and topical products effective against similar parasites have no effect on the Pajaroello tick, according to research by University of California Davis. Cows less than six months pregnant not previously ex-

Harrison, Bennett, Adele and Pearce are the fifth generation of agriculturists in the Orradre family.

posed to the tick seem to abort about 90 to 120 days into the pregnancy if bitten by the tick. “We try to expose the replacement heifers to the fields we know carry the tick to build their immunity before pregnancy,” John Orradre said. “If we get them bit while they’re young, we don’t have problems later on that can lead to Foothill abortion.”

Hardy Red Angus Cattle Thrive in California Foothills If the ranch ever faces a unique challenge, John and Mike Orradre enlist the help of their vet to get an necropsy report to fix the problem. “We try to use every tool we have in the arsenal,” John Orradre said. Next Generation John and Laura Orradre have four children between the ages of two and 13 who also carry an interest for the livestock industry. Harrison, 13; Bennett, 11; and Adele, 9, will exhibit steers and a goat at the Salinas Valley Fair in Monterey County. Although a little young at the moment, hopes are there for Pearce, 2, to follow in his siblings’ footsteps. Harrison is interested in beginning a herd of his own and is looking to buy several heifers from Sargent Cattle Co. to begin his enterprise. “It pays to start young if the interest is there,” Mike Orradre said. Sargent Cattle Co. is a ranch full of agricultural history that prides itself on the maternal and carcass traits in the Red Angus-influenced cattle, and the Orradres hope to continue to see future genetic improvement.

74 American Red Angus Magazine ■ March 2018

“You walk out there and look at a red set of cattle, and they just look good,” John Orradre said. “They’re hardy cattle, through and through.” ■

True Grit Ensures Success in Grid Marketing by Tracey Koester, ARA Editorial Coordinator

Cattle producers rarely achieve great success without fortitude, determination and unyielding courage. This spirit of true grit settled the western frontier more than one hundred years ago and today’s cattlemen and women can dig into that same resolve to expand their marketing territories for greater profit gains.

While grid marketing is far from new, the fear of the unknown and perceived marketing risk deters producers from retaining ownership, feeding out their cattle and selling their beef product on a grid for its true value. True Merit “Lack of knowledge creates fear, and marketing for the first time on a grid – without understanding it and knowing how it works – can lead to a lot of misunderstanding,” said Gary D. Fike, Director of Commercial Marketing for the Red Angus Association of America.

“In grid marketing, the producer who markets on a grid is rewarded with premiums over a base price for their highquality carcasses. The fear of potential risk,” he explained, “is that low-quality carcasses fall under the base price and receive a discount. So, instead of taking an average price on all the cattle sold in a cash market, the cattle feeder receives premiums and takes discounts.” Since individual cattle are unique and not created equal, it’s difficult to determine which animals are high-quality, average or low-quality by looking at them in the feedlot. Genetics of the animal determine their ability to deposit marbling fat and yield premium product – characteristics that are not identifiable with the hide on, regardless of hair coat color. A history of kill data, top carcass genetics, a reputation of delivering top-quality carcass merit and a relationship with the feeder and packer all reduce risk while simultaneously working toward ensuring higher profits in grid marketing. “In almost every instance, if a cattle feeder knows from experience and/or

has a history that a set of steers are highquality grading cattle, it almost always pays for them to market on the grid,” said Fike. “In other words, the premiums outweigh the discounts.” “The bottom line is that the consuming public is willing to pay more for beef that comes from cattle that grade USDA Choice and Prime. So, as the packer moves beef out to distributors, these grades command higher prices than Select and Standard grades which do not sell as easily nor for as much money.”

True Success Michael Wasson, Prairie Dog Creek Cattle LLC, of Dresden, Kansas, has marketed his high-percentage Red Angus steers on the grid for the past 12 years. “Grid marketing made sense for us,” said Wasson. “When we started in the cattle business, my wife, Kelly, and I purchased a herd of cows with highquality genetics. They already had carcass merit bred into them so we were looking to be paid for our genetics. Grid marketing offered higher premiums than selling on the hoof.” Wasson feeds their steers in his own feedlot, which affords him the opportunity to monitor their progress and de-

cide when the cattle should sell on the grid. In previous years, they tracked the cattle’s finishing progress through ultrasound technology. That experience has helped hone their eye to visually gauge the correlated body condition of the steers by looking at their brisket, tail head and rib cover, and consequently know when it’s time to ship them to the plant. “We might be a little off on guessing back fat without the use of ultrasound,” confessed Wasson, “but we are close. Our steers have a small bit of Simmental influence which helps add ribeye area and keep yield grade scores in the 2s and 3s.” Wasson said their biggest challenge is deciding when to sell because they try to ship cattle to fit the grid. Another challenge is deciding which of the many available grids to use. “Comparing one grid to another is difficult because of the many variables, and we like a grid that pays a premium for upper two-thirds Choice on red-hided cattle.” “If you sell enough cattle to a packer, you can negotiate your own grid,” explained Fike, “or you can use one of several grids that the packer already has in place.” Packers pay premiums on USDA Quality Grade, which is based on marbling and maturity (age of the animal), and Yield Grade which is based on cutability (ribeye area and amount of outside fat). USDA Yield Grades range from 1 to 5, with a YG1 being a very lean carcass with little outside fat, to an average YG3, to a YG4 or 5 which has a lot of excess fat cover. “Consumers don’t buy fat,” said Fike.

True Grit Ensures Success in Grid Marketing “It is also important to know what kind of a grid you market your cattle on. That is, what kinds of premiums are offered and what kind of discounts apply. Most base their premiums on high-quality grading cattle, but others pay more premiums on lower Yield Grade cattle. Some pay on both.”

fat steer on the grid and hit upper twothirds Choice or Prime!”

“We sell on Tyson Fresh Meats’ Choice+ Grid specifically for Red Angus cattle and our steers average a $60 to $70 premium per head,” said Wasson. “We’ve had cattle run 15 to 18 percent Prime and 95 to 100 percent Choice, so this grid that rewards cattle grading in the upper two-thirds Choice works well for us.”

“If you know your cattle and have confidence that you are buying genetics with strong carcass traits, you will minimize your risk,” he said. Established relationships with feeders also open doors as some feeders will purchase a percent of the cattle, sharing ownership and risk.

Wasson continued, “If live-weight marketed cattle are breaking even and we are averaging $60 to $70 in premiums, then we are making that much per head while live weight cattle are just breaking even. This is an important perspective in understanding the risk – and gains – of retained ownership.” Wasson’s cattle qualify for the Choice+ grid because their steers are enrolled in the Feeder Calf Certification Program which ensures age, source and genetics of at least 50 percent Red Angus bloodlines. The yellow FCCP tag is the admission ticket for the grid. “We ship on a grid to reap the benefits of our time and monetary investment in superior cattle genetics,” said Wasson. “A grid helps us to realize and measure progress or setbacks in our program. When you are graded and paid on every animal separately, you can see the direct results of your genetics program.”

True Genetics Michael and Kelly Wasson have earned the Grid Master Award for the past 10 years – an accolade that recognizes superior genetics combined with precise marketing of Red Angus-influenced cattle. “We don’t feed cattle for awards,” said Wasson, “but it sure is fun to be acknowledged.” Their success on the grid starts by selecting genetics that ensure they are raising cattle that will have superior carcass merit.

True Advice Wasson encourages fellow producers to retain ownership in their feeder cattle and sell on a grid, even if they start small to alleviate potential risk.

The yellow FCCP tag is the admission ticket for the grid.

“We spend hours scrutinizing the bulls in a sale catalog and love sorting the data in Excel for our criteria,” he said. They sort for each trait they feel is important in their operation, then attend the bull sale with 10 bulls in mind. “The bulls still need to have the conformation and look the part.” Wasson shared his bull-buying criteria. “Yearling weight, marbling and ribeye are top hitters for grid cattle. I like the bulls to have a yearling weight EPD of 115 or more, at least 1.00 for marbling, and above-average ribeye. I don’t worry too much about ribeye because our cowherd is already strong in that trait.” He also reviews GridMaster and HerdBuilder indices that give a general overview of the bull’s strong suit. He doesn’t consider calving ease. “Birth weight doesn’t scare me,” he said. “A lot of people give up growth traits because of calving ease but cows should be able to handle a little bigger calf which equates to increased growth for the lifetime of that animal.” Wasson sorts his cow at breeding to optimize their traits. One set of cows is bred with the grid in mind for growth and carcass traits. Another herd is bred in order to retain replacement heifers from their calves. They strive to raise cattle that fit their environment and the grid. “Everyone has a little different formula depending on what works for them. Our cattle are a little bigger because our environment and feed resources allow for it,” Wasson said. “It sure is fun to sell a 1,600-pound

86 American Red Angus Magazine ■ March 2018

Another benefit of sharing ownership of feeder cattle is to transition the timing of income. “If a rancher is set up to be paid for his calves in August, it can be a hardship to wait for payment until May when the cattle are slaughtered,” said Wasson. “By selling half to the feeder, you can get paid in both August and May, spreading out your payments and making a smoother transition of income across the year.” The grid pricing system is advantageous for those who have high-quality cattle but, without prior carcass data, producers don’t have a benchmark. “It is nearly impossible to get carcass data back from the packer if you sell on the cash market,” said Fike. “It may behoove producers to sell their cattle on the cash market and negotiate to get the carcass data collected by an independent data collector and learn how the cattle perform.” While the producer will have to pay for the data, it will add confidence and reduce risk for grid marketing in the future. “It is an educational process,” concluded Fike, “but one that pays big dividends for those who understand it, use it, and go back to the ranch to make adjustments to their genetics that will improve their return on their investment.” Tenacity in selecting high-carcass-merit genetics, research into grid marketing options and a little old-fashioned grit can help cow-calf producers and feeders pocket more profit and conquer the unknown frontier of grid marketing.

True Grit Ensures Success in Grid Marketing

Breaking Down a Grid by Gary D. Fike, Director of Commercial Marketing

Below is an example of a grid – termed “grid” because of the lines and divisions. This is an example only; it is not indicative of any particular grid by any packer. The assumptions are expressed in dollars per cwt on the hot carcass weight basis. I used a base price of $200 which is not necessarily indicative of the current market, but it more easily illustrates the math. Base Price: $200/cwt, hot carcass basis, low Choice, YG3 Premiums: $25/cwt Prime premium $5/cwt upper two-thirds Choice premium $15/cwt Choice-Select spread $2/cwt YG2 $6 YG1 carcasses Discounts: -$20/cwt YG4 -$25/cwt YG5 -$25 Standard

Although not included in this example, discounts will apply to carcasses weighing 1,050 pounds or more, or on carcasses weighing 550 pounds or less. The base price is the key to most grids. If the base price is relatively high, producers will benefit as much from that as from many grid premiums. Low Choice, YG3, 800-pound carcass = $1,600 per head ($200 x 8.0 cwt) Prime, YG1, 800-pound carcass = $1,848 per head ($231 x 8.0 cwt) This is a very rare individual. Low Choice, YG4, 800-pound carcass = $1,440 ($180 x 8.0 cwt) Some grids, however, will pay the full Prime premium with little to no discount if they are a YG4. This is because, presumably, Prime carcasses are relatively few (less than 5 percent) in

the total carcass mix across the U.S., and there is great demand for Prime beef by high-end restaurants. Packers can still market the Prime beef easily; and most, if not all, excess fat is trimmed off. It’s relatively simple to understand that if you have a lot of Prime-grading carcasses, your check is going to be a lot bigger. I have seen instances of loads of cattle grading 40 to 50 percent Prime. On a 35-head load, that’s easily an extra $3,000. There are a number of other factors that affect grid pricing and not all grids are the same. Some give greater rewards for better yield grades. Many have allowances for a certain percentage of “out” cattle (YG4 and YG5, dark cutters, Standards, etc.) so owners don’t stand discounts up to a certain percentage. Some packers don’t discount any YG4 or YG5 carcasses beyond the plant average for the week. Some grids pay a lower Prime premium, but have a higher base price. The feeder or producer may also have to pay freight to the plant. If a producer is contemplating which grid will best fit their cattle, these are the variables they need to research. Some packers pay an upper two-thirds Choice premium, some do not. Also, there is often a plant average for low Choice or better that cattle must meet or surpass, or a “hot yield” of roughly 64 percent, to realize the full value of the grid. The base price may be discounted if the cattle do not meet those parameters. ■

SELLING 60 RED ANGUS BULLS Yearling, 18 mo. & 2-year-old bulls

Know the right questions to ask yourself when purchasing long-term herd genetics.

Where do I find bulls that will make my cattle operation profitable – overall? We don’t feel you need to aquire bull power from “high growth only” herds to get the growth you desire. Many seedstock producers try to impress you mostly with amazing gains and weights. This is probably less likely to maximize your total herd profit. We’ve spent the last 25 years developing cow herds that maximize your overall cow herd profitability combining growth and efficiency. • True, moderate, highly fertile cows. • Great feet and leg structure. • Superior udder quality. • Unmatched mothering ability and maternal character. • Ability to have great preg rates in an environment where we produce and stockpile grass not silage or even much hay. • Ability to create progeny that stand out in their gainability and natural thickness on minimal inputs. • Proven premiums on heifer progeny (we have buyers)

These are attributes we require of all our cows. We ask ourselves these questions in order to produce quality genetics for you today and in the future.

Industry Benefits from Keenan's Impact on Breed Improvement by Tracey Koester, ARA Editorial Coordinator

When Larry Keenan – freshly graduated from Kansas State University with a Master's in animal science – applied for the internship at the Red Angus Association of America in 2004, little did he know the impact he would have on the genetic progression of the breed and the beef industry as a whole.

Over the next 13-and-a-half years, Keenan intertwined his passion for genetic advancement, cutting-edge science and Red Angus cattle to assist the breed in securing its current status as one of America's most-valued breeds. Keenan left his position as RAAA's director of breed improvement in early 2018 to pursue a career as a Shelter Insurance agent in his hometown of Sulphur, Oklahoma. "Larry contributed to the improvement of Red Angus EPDs in so many ways it would be impossible to count them all," reflected RAAA CEO Tom Brink. "From cow traits to carcass, he put his heart, mind and soul into providing the breed with sound selection tools that helped the breed grow and improve. Red Angus would not be as successful as it is today without the contribution of Larry Keenan. Every Red Angus stakeholder owes him a tremendous debt of gratitude." In the Beginning One of Keenan's tasks as a Red Angus intern was scanning photos, managing production and laying out “The History of Red Angus” book. Ironically, this was the first step in writing his own chapter of the breed's history. "I fondly remember, as a board member, when we hired Larry in an intern position at RAAA," said Kelli Brown of Throckmorton, Texas. "He quickly showed his willingness to work hard for the breed and find answers to the tough questions, so it was no surprise to us when Dr. Bob Hough decided to

ment Committee member, I am so thankful for Larry's dedication and wisdom," said Brown. "He helped keep the ship afloat when we faced the significant challenges of the onset of genetic defects, navigated the unknown waters of genomics, helped keep the database glued together when the edges were fraying and championed the new carcass test program. He was always brainstorming ideas in order to help our breed validate our product and remained focused on commercial cattlemen."

hire him for a full-time position. He proved to be an asset for not only Red Angus but was a trusted contributor to many of the challenging discussions we have faced." Some of Keenan's professional contributions include the development of the RAAA Red Navigator test, as well as implementing many breed-improvement programs involving carcass-progeny testing, application of udder scoring, realization of carcass weight and yield grade EPDs, development and delivery of the HerdBuilder and GridMaster indices, implementation of genomic data, delivery of multi-breed EPDs, as well as numerous research projects and resulting EPD model enhancements. "As a former board member, past president and current Breed Improve-

Industry Impact In 2015, Keenan was recognized as a recipient of one of Vance Publishing's Top 40 Under 40 Awards. The program seeks to recognize the most innovative people in agriculture under the age of 40 - from animal and crop production, biotechnology and university researchers, to food and nutrition technology, agricultural equipment, agronomy and beyond who will be instrumental in meeting the challenge of providing food and fiber for a growing global population. Dr. Matt Spangler of University of Nebraska-Lincoln worked closely with Keenan on the International Genetic Solutions team, an unprecedented collaboration between progressive breed associations to enhance beef industry profitability by forming a multi-breed genetic evaluation database, allowing producers to make direct comparisons across breeds.

Industry Benefits from Keenan's Impact on Breed Improvement Spangler leads weekly calls with the IGS group. "Initially, Larry helped set the ground work for the partnership between the Red Angus Association of American and the American Simmental Association that eventually included 12 progressive breed associations representing 17 million animals on a common-based EPD model," said Spangler. "This was revolutionary to the livestock industry." Spangler added, "What I valued in Larry is his desire to bring to Red Angus the best of what we know through sciencebased research. He sought the knowledge of respected research facilities, engaged academia to implement the science and communicated the latest research." Spangler said Keenan was on board to see the first implementation of genomics into EPDs and his work in the industry will have a lasting impact with revolu-

tionary technology. "Larry was actively involved in bringing the Red Angus breed toward the implementation of BOLT software." Dr. Mark Enns of Colorado State University also worked closely with Keenan through research and genetic improvement. Enns participates in a group of beef cattle breeding scientists that meet annually to report on and plan research projects. "Larry participated in our regional beef cattle breeding project and brought an applied perspective to those endeavors," said Enns. "He was always pushing for research outcomes Red Angus could use. He had a passion for genetic improvement of Red Angus cattle and he was willing to ask the hard questions of us. Larry wasn't satisfied until we were able to supply a good answer for those inquiries on genetic evaluation."

102 American Red Angus Magazine â– March 2018

Kenda Ponder appreciated Keenan's analytical, forward-thinking nature as a coworker. "He was never content to settle for the information provided to stakeholders," said Ponder. "His focus was to improve the data the Association provided to members and, more importantly, their customers, always wanting to move a process or program forward or come up with something new that would be better. "Our conversations were never rushed," said Ponder, "but always challenging because he never allowed a roadblock or red flag to deter what he thought needed to be accomplished to make things better. He has served the association in different capacities, and regardless of the position, he worked with heart and dedication to advance RAAA from good to great! He truly did direct the breed's genetic improvement for Red Angus stakeholders."

Industry Benefits from Keenan's Impact on Breed Improvement Impact on the Future Keenan also worked closely with Clint Berry who served the RAAA as Director of Commercial Marketing before venturing out as a Superior Livestock Auction representative.

“The Red Angus breed has been blessed to have Larry Keenan riding for the brand all these years,” said Berry. “Larry’s efforts have been instrumental in many of the breed's programs and policies that have helped position Red Angus as the industry's fastest growing and most in-demand breed. In the years I was fortunate enough to work at RAAA, I saw first-hand his dedication to breed improvement and overall advancement of the genetic superiority of Red Angus cattle. “His work throughout his tenure has directly impacted the selection decisions stakeholders have used that have catapulted the breed's genetic improvement for more than the last decade and that

will continue to advance Red Angus’ position in the future,” continued Berry. “His love of the breed and his commitment to RAAA's Core Policies to make science-based breed-improvement decisions focused on the success of commercial cattlemen has served the breed and our industry well throughout his time at RAAA. “Larry's ability to comprehend and utilize highly complicated data sets and programs – with the unique ability to communicate with cattlemen at any level of production – will be missed by Red Angus stakeholders,” said Berry. “The Red Angus breed has benefited greatly from Larry's talents and all of the breed's stakeholders wish Larry and his family great success in his future endeavors.” “Larry was a pleasure to work with, always willing to ask the hard questions, but also appreciating a direct, honest an-

swer,” said Enns. “We will miss working with him.” “I especially appreciated that Larry stepped up to the plate of leadership whenever he was called upon to serve in our breed and our industry,” concluded Brown. “We will miss him, but my guess is whenever the next book is written about significant influencers in our breed, it will hold the name of Larry Keenan." n

114 American Red Angus Magazine ■ March 2018

Red Angus Association of America Releases Spring 2018 EPDs in Time for Bull Sale Season As a new calendar year has arrived, so has the blitz of spring bull sales. Beef producers desire up-to-date genetic information to make their purchasing decisions, hence accurate and reliable information is necessary. The Red Angus Association of America has just released its spring 2018 EPDs, allowing producers to utilize the most current data from the industry’s best Red Angus genetics at upcoming production sales. The Red Angus breed has been dedicated to providing trustworthy and accurate EPDs for decades, which are backed by Total Herd Reporting data across the breed and membership. The newly released spring 2018 EPDs are conveniently displayed with inbreed ranking percentiles to facilitate selection decisions. Red Angus’ strong foundation of THR data, combined with genomic enhancement from DNA tests, provides EPDs with excellent reliability. The information sourced in genomic data can be as informative as a cow’s lifetime production record or an individual bull’s first calf crop. Additionally, since the genomic data is incorporated directly into the EPDs, beef producers don’t have to learn how to interpret anything new. Ultimately, these factors yield higher accuracy EPDs for bull buyers who rely on sound data to make their purchasing decisions. “Red Angus continues to invest heavily in genetic characterization through EPDs,” said Tom Brink, RAAA CEO. “A positive from the past several years of rapid breed growth is a significantly larger database and a greater number of total performance records that build animal proofs more rapidly than ever before. This benefits commercial cattle producers who count on Red Angus genetics to keep their operations profitable.” Producers can access individual animals’ EPDs and breed percentiles, or calculate the projected EPDs of specific matings, via RAAA’s website at RedAngus.org. ■
