Fine Diamonds – Made of ICE! Currently, the Red Angus female has been identified and demanded throughout the cattle industry as the “Most-Favored Female.” Like a fine diamond, she is worthy of such reverence. So, let’s explore. Why is she in that position? Where did she come from? Where is she going? The answer is simply that she is made of ICE! Inspiration, Collaboration and Elimination. Inspiration Look up. Be thankful. Be thankful for a breed filled with fellow cattlemen striving to serve with integrity and honor. Be thankful that our founding breeders had the insight and innovation to focus on the value of cattle production (the commercial side of the business). Be thankful for the relentless stewardship of fellow Red Angus breeders who have paved the way for the current success. I am thankful for you; your passion, your ideals, your continual evaluation of your program. You all inspire me to serve you as a board member. I desire to make sound choices that will better your program, our breed and industry as a whole. Collaboration Look around – take a look at your cattle. What would they be without your standards and the ideals of your neighbor (fellow breeders)? Now ponder this; together, where can we take this great breed? Let’s each open the gates to consider – collaboration within our Association. How about within the industry – buyers, processors, marketing. Strategic planning, building synergy, creating market share – all of these are being implemented by your Association to add value and enhance resilience to your operation. With direction, drive, grit and a collective mindset, we have the most powerful tools of the industry. Let’s cooperate and use them!
animals individually. How are her feet, her udder, her disposition, performance, structure, fertility? Is she worthy of the “diamond” status? If not, make the cut and either use her as a recipient or simply send her to town. If each and every one of us continually refines the diamond by engaging in the practice of elimination, our breed will continue to THRIVE. We will not only improve our own herds, but also the herds of fellow Red Angus breeders and those utilizing our seedstock in their commercial programs.
Elimination I challenge you to look down. That’s right. Physically look at each of your
My friends, that is why the fine diamond – the most-favored female – is made of ICE. ■

An Unwavering Emphasis on Profitable Females Red Angus has been committed to making great females since the earliest years of the breed’s existence. The fact that females are foundational to profitability at the cow-calf level and beyond has never been lost on Red Angus breeders. RAAA has an equally long-standing focus on the female side of beef production. Digging back through some old American Red Angus Magazines from the 1960s is extremely interesting in that regard. The prevailing mindset of the day in Red Angus circles was maternally targeted and science-based, revolutionary for 50-plus years ago. To begin a look back in time, here’s a quote from the March 1966 issue of American Red Angus: “Beef cattle improvement programs have been designed to help producers recognize and select breeding stock that will improve their overall production efficiency and the market value of their animals. Performance testing is one major tool. It emphasizes the selection of breeding stock on the basis of records that indicate – 1) inherited defects, 2) fertility, 3) nursing ability, 4) growth rate, 5) feed efficiency, 6) carcass value, and 7) soundness, style and balance of conformation.” – C.T. Parker, RAAA Fieldman Notice in Parker’s list that the maternally oriented traits of fertility and nurs-

ing ability rank second and third, high on the list of traits he identified as important. Here’s an excerpt from a June 1968 article on cow size and productivity: “Considering cow size together with the feedlot performance of her progeny, we may want to compromise on the size of the cattle to produce the greatest efficiency. We might want cows of medium size selected because they are efficient calf producers.” – John F. Lasley, University of Missouri Lesley’s comments, which Red Angus breeders were exposed to through the magazine, are well ahead of their time. He discusses cow size in the context of all industry segments, while recognizing that cows can get too big for their environment. That’s amazing when you consider that most American beef cattle at the time were too small. The frame race of the 1980s was more than a decade in the future. Yet the message from Lesley is one of balance, not a blanket statement of “make them bigger.”

Association Commentary From a well-known professor in March 1968: “There is justifiable concern among cattlemen over the size of cow required to produce a growthier steer. From the limited information to date, it would appear that extremely large, coarse cows are not needed to raise fast-gaining calves. It looks like medium-sized cows may do the best job and end up being the most profitable for the cow-calf man.” – Dr. Harlan Ritchie, Michigan State University We can all look back and wish the beef industry had paid attention to Dr. Ritchie’s advice. Fifteen years of wrong-headed breeding decisions chasing frame size might have been avoided. Here’s a management-related article about heavy versus light calves in January 1967:
“There are a number of ways to increase weaning weights. One method, and this is probably the least expensive, is to cull perennial late-calving cows. Then use better management during the breeding season to bunch up the calf group and get a greater percentage of calves during the early part of the season.” No author was provided for the article, but it reads like a modern beef Extension service bulletin. The same advice is still being given some five decades later (and it still works). Lastly, the paragraph below was taken from a February 1968 herd reduction sale advertisement: “These cows are not being pampered. They are out in the cold and snow, gleaning corn fields and on milo that did not mature. They get just what they

will clean up and a little over a pound of 32% range cubes per head per day.” Real-world, hard-working range cows. With this kind of maternal legacy, it might not be a surprise that Red Angus went on to implement Total Herd Reporting in the mid1990s (the first breed to do so) and was also in on the ground floor with two female-oriented EPDs – Stayability and Heifer Pregnancy. Today’s position as the industry’s most-favored female is a product of the unwavering Red Angus commitment to making ever-better females for the commercial rancher. It is a job that never ends, but we can be confident that Red Angus breeders and the RAAA will fruitfully stay the course for many more years to come. ■

Red Angus Females – The Common Denominator We are familiar with Red Angus females and their widely recognized value to the beef business. Their fertility, functionality and longevity are the very foundation upon which producers across many regions have built their businesses. However, I have to believe that there is more to it than that. After all, Red Angus females have commanded substantial premiums compared to other breeds – as much as $11 per hundredweight according to data from Superior Livestock Auction. The same data set indicates Red Angus bred heifers are worth, on average, $150 more than any other breed type. With that being said, it came as no surprise when a group of Red Angus females from the Feemster Ranch of Prichett, Colorado, topped the bred heifer market at Superior’s recent sale in Sheridan, Wyoming. What is it that makes our females so valuable? Aside from their unrivaled functionality, I believe it is the flexibility they offer. A good, consistent set of Red Angus cows can pave the way for producers to find added value in developing females, to incorporate a planned crossbreeding system, or to increase the carcass merit in future calf crops. Often times we place emphasis on sire selection in these management systems, but don’t discount the contribution from the bottom side of the pedigree. Stephen Bigge of Stockton, Kansas, stated, “Since making the switch to Red Angus in 2010, we believe the potential of our cowherd has increased ten-fold. These females have done anything we’ve asked them to do.” Bigge Land & Livestock began incorporating Red Angus cattle for their maternal advantages and just a few years in has begun retaining ownership and marketing calves on the grid. That is a true testament to the flexibility that Red Angus females bring to varying operations, and it is that flexibility that continues to in-
crease demand for these valuable breeding pieces. Many of you have seen CEO Tom Brink’s recent eNews article outlining “four-circle cattle.” The Red Angus brood cow provides the foundation for these cattle. Her ability to calve, raise a calf on the given region’s resources, and breed back regularly helps place producers in a prime position to capitalize on other traits that add value to their calf crop. Any argument that these cattle cannot be produced efficiently is quickly refuted by Dr. Rick Funston, who was one of the headline speakers at the 2019 Red Angus Summit. One of Funston’s many takeaways was the value of Red Angus-influenced females to his work at the University of Nebraska. He marveled at their ability to generate 1,600-pound calf-fed steers that roll Choice and were consistently traced back to running-age red cows that still crossed the scale at just over 1,200 pounds – a first-hand example of four-circle cattle. Further increasing the value of Red Angus and Red Angus-influenced brood cows is the continued development of the Premium Red Baldy program (PRB). A collaboration between the RAAA and the America Hereford Association, PRB is set to highlight the unrivaled maternal merit of this tried-and-true hybrid female. Especially in multi-breed crossbreeding systems, where Premium Red Baldies are highly likely to be used, we can
16 American Red Angus Magazine ■ October 2019
generate easy-calving, maternally sound cattle that have the potential to excel in growth and carcass merit. There is a long list of positives associated with the red baldy cattle. Steven Meyer of Brunswick, Missouri, said he will rarely sell his PRB-eligible females, because they are incredibly hard to part with. Yet the few times he has decided to market these heifers, there has been a line of buyers wanting to invest in them. “They’re low-maintenance cattle that just never give us any trouble,” said Meyer. “When it comes time to cull, we just never seem to have any of the red baldies on the list to go to town.” Regardless of region, breeding program or business model, we find the Red Angus female to be the common denominator of many successful ranches. She stands unwavering, ready to meet the demand for excellence in front of her, without compromising the fertility, functionality and longevity that she is known for. ■

Member Services Bulletin Fall is an exciting – and busy – time of year as spring-born calves are weaned and begin their journey to production sale day. This is an ideal time to collect data on both the calves and their dams and report it for full registration status. By completing these tasks and submitting DNA samples early, breeders can reduce stress as they prepare their catalog and select which animals will make the final cut for sale day.
Following are a few pointers and reminders to assist in the reporting and registration process. Fall 2018 No-Progeny Report A No-Progeny Report is a list of females that did not have a calf record or reason code reported for the previous calendar year. This report is notification to the member that their females are subject to inactivation. If a calf record or reason code for no calf is not reported, the female will be inactivated and reactivation fees will apply to bring her back on active inventory. Spring 2019 Birth and Weaning Birth and weaning data are recommended to be reported once weaning data is collected. Members can preregister calves before weaning and update weaning weights later. It is also recommended to report all calf records together at one time for ratio purposes. Calves that are registered together within the same job online in REDSPro or sent in all together on paper to the National Office, will have the opportunity to be ratioed together. When reporting calf records make sure to report for every single female, either a calf record or a reason code as to why she did not have a calf. Total Herd Reporting Requirements Each cow on active inventory (16 months of age and older) is required to have one of the following THR requirements reported: 1) Calf record through weaning,
2) Reason code for no calf, or 3) Disposal code for the cow. Calving season for spring is Jan. 1 to June 30. Calving season for fall is July 1 to Dec. 31. Tattoo Requirements All animals submitted for registration into the RAAA database must have an individual animal ID and a herd prefix from the first owner on record. The ID and prefix are required to be tattooed in the calf’s ears. RAAA does not differentiate between left and right ear of the calf; the ID can be in one ear, the herd prefix can be in the other ear. The member may tattoo both the ID and prefix in the same ear but, they must be stacked on top of each other – they cannot be side by side in the same ear. RAAA Data Turnaround Time The RAAA office is processing data submissions sent by paper, fax or email within five business days. We will strive to keep turnaround time in this timeframe, however, as submissions increase this could increase turnaround time as well. If data is submitted directly online into REDSPro, registration numbers are generated instantly. In order for an online job to be fully completed, the “Final Submit” button must be clicked on the billing page. Data submitted as of Sunday each week will be included in the BOLT extract on Monday and updated EPDs will be available online eight days later on Tuesday. If data is

Member Services Bulletin Evaluating DNA Turnaround Time The fact of the matter is, if you have not already submitted samples on your spring sale bulls, their data is most likely not going to be correct for your catalog deadline. The process of DNA testing and reporting is exactly that, a process. So how long does DNA testing take? Outlined below is the timeline and processes from start to finish, in hopes of helping you meet necessary deadlines. 1. If your order is correct when it arrives at the National Office, it will spend no more than two days in the office and traveling to the lab. 2. When samples are checked in at the lab, they can begin processing in 24 hours, pending seasonality. The lab will receive 17,000-plus samples each day during busy season, significantly increasing the time it takes for samples to start processing. It could take your samples two to five days to begin processing.
Start today with cow status in the palm of your hand.
Detect estrus to improve conception rates in A.I. cows and heifers Monitor health and eating to catch early onset of sickness or stress Free up more time in your day
SenseHub™ Beef from Allflex is a new remote monitoring system that tracks and reports cow status to your operation’s network of smart phones and office computers. See how it works at SenseHubBeef.com (608) 237-3170 • www.allflex.global/us/ 28 American Red Angus Magazine ■ October 2019
3. After the samples begin processing, the steps necessary to retrieve usable and high-quality data will take 15-20 business days. 4. Once the sample has completed the processing steps, the data will be released for reporting. If the sample produced low-quality data or none at all, the lab is going to reprocess that sample. Reprocessing will take 15-20 business days and regardless of how few or how many samples are reprocessing, the entire order will NOT be made available for reporting. 5. In the case that a sample is reported as “failed” then a second sample must be collected, if data is desired, and the process starts over again. The maximum time between receiving a DNA results email and data being updated in REDSPro is seven days. DNA is added to REDSPro every Monday, so it is important to use that time to resolve any “Exclusions.” 6. Genotypes from GGP tests are pulled into the IGSBOLT system every Monday and the analysis takes seven days to run. If your DNA order and pedigree corrections are not completed by Sunday night, then your animals are not in that week’s IGS-BOLT analysis. This means their data will be not be pulled into BOLT until the NEXT Monday and will be current in REDSPro eight days after that. Even in the most ideal situation, it will take 30 days for animals with GGP testing to be reflected accurately in REDSPro. Please DO NOT wait or push the boundaries on deadlines as Murphy’s Law will triumph. ■

Raising Kids and Calves in Ranch Country by Tracey Koester, ARA Editorial Coordinator
42 American Red Angus Magazine n October 2019
Nestled among the Coteau Hills of eastern South Dakota near the town of Sisseton, Travis and Sara Johnson of Triple J Cattle Co. are raising their family to know and appreciate the value of ranch work and, more importantly its rewards. Their Red Angus cowherd, stocker cattle and feedlot provide ample production agriculture experiences for sons Tate, 16, and Tyan, 15, and daughter Sidney, 13, all of whom help with cattle work and run equipment on the ranch. In their spare time, they enjoy playing football and volleyball, and participating in high school and junior high rodeos.
Kids and Calves “In the spring when we are calving,” said Johnson, “they grab something to eat after school then take off to tag calves. That’s when I really appreciate the good disposition of our Red Angus cows. The kids help us with all the cow work, and we don’t tolerate any cows with bad attitudes.” Over the past few years, Johnson has moved his calving later in the spring and now starts the end of April. “The bad storms and cold temperatures make for a lot of work during calving,” he said. “We were running stockers already, so we decided to move our calving dates back to more manageable weather and market them later.” The ranch diversifies its marketing at many stages of production to hopefully target the best prices, and their Red Angus cowherd is the common thread that ties it all together. In addition to their own cattle, Johnson buys light-weight calves in the fall to background. He seeks five-weight steers and heifers and runs them as grass cattle until lateSeptember. He sells the stockers, weighing around 1,050 pounds, through Sisseton Livestock Auction or Hub City Livestock Auction in nearby Aberdeen, South Dakota. He has finished heavier cattle in his feedlot if the market was favorable and has occasionally sold on the Tyson Choice+ grid. “I believe our diversified marketing options keep us in touch with the entire industry – from backgrounding, running stockers or finishing cattle, to selling females at various stages of production. Marketing is all about timing and we can watch the futures board and hopefully target the best window when we sell,” he said.
The Johnson Family: Tate, Travis, Sara, Sidney and Tyan
“Our feedlot is a permitted concentrated animal feeding operation. CAFOs get an undeserved bad rap, in my opinion. Their environmental impact is so small and so well managed, they just make sense. We don’t make money if we abuse our animals or the environment, so it’s in everyone’s best interest to be good stewards – and I think most ranchers follow that principle. With our stocker and feeding operation, we are turning grass and forage into pounds. It’s important that we take care of our resources.”
American Red Angus Magazine n October 2019 43
Raising Kids and Calves in Ranch Country Johnson sells a few young pairs in the early summer to manage his stocking rate and diversify the operation’s cash flow. “We keep all our heifer calves,” he said. “We pick out our replacements and anything we don’t want to put into production, we spay and run her as a stocker. If we don't think she’s good enough to breed, we don’t want someone else breeding her.” They also market some bred heifers in the fall. “Red Angus females definitely bring a premium,” said Johnson, who enrolls in the Red Angus Feeder Calf Certification Program. “We have been using the FCCP yellow tag for as long as I can remember, and we tag both steers and heifers so buyers know they are Red Angus.” The FCCP tag verifies source, age and at least 50% Red Angus genetics of the animal wearing it. “We are proud to put in the FCCP tag. Cowboys want to buy heifers that will grow into good cows, so we select our herd bulls accordingly. The steer traits will follow.” It’s All About the Cow The ideal cow, according to Johnson, has a good, square hip, deep broody look, neat udder and teat size, and a pleasant disposition. “When I’m selecting new herd bulls, I visit with my seedstock supplier and ask him about the bull’s dam,” he said. “I like to know that he came from a strong cow family with good udders because the cow is half of the genetic equation. I like to buy sons of older dams, but if I like the bull and he was raised by a young cow from a good proven maternal line, I’ll still buy him.” Johnson likes an udder with fairly tight suspension and small teats. “We use the Red Angus calving book and follow the udder scoring chart in it, grading each cow’s udder when she calves. The kids help too and are getting pretty good at it.”
Travis Johnson selects herdsires to complement his docile, maternal cowherd. All bulls are DNA profiled so he can verify the sires of his heifers through the Red Navigator test.
He said they are fussy on their cow traits and cull a cow if she doesn’t measure up. “You only get one turn a year,” he said, “and if we miss culling a cow, we need to deal with her the next year. It’s slow progress but, for the most part, we are happy with the uniformity and quality of our cowherd.” Over the years they have selected herd bulls to moderate their cow size. “We felt we had too much gap between our framier cows and smaller cows, so we purchased bulls with that in mind,” said Johnson. “We have probably reduced the overall weight of our mature cows by 200 pounds and our herd is more consistent.” In recent years, they started using the Red Navigator DNA test on their heifers. “One of the best things about Red Navigator is knowing the sires of the heifers so we can better manage how we breed them,” he said. “We also discovered we needed to work on our Calving Ease Direct and we have improved that with sire selection.” The Red Navigator test is for high-percentage Red Angus commercial heifers. Individual heifers receive percentile rankings on each EPD trait as compared to other heifers that have been tested with Red Navigator, and herd averages are listed at the bottom of the spreadsheet for each trait.
The Red Angus cowherd is the foundation of Triple J Cattle Co.’s operation.
44 American Red Angus Magazine n October 2019
For sire verification to work, sires must be DNA profiled to confirm their parentage and the results must be on file with the Red Angus Association of America. “Most of the bulls we purchase are already DNA’d but if we do buy a bull that isn’t profiled, I’ll pull a sample and send it in,” said Johnson. “Their EPDs will change a little after the results come back so I like knowing exactly what the bull is, especially for calving ease traits.

Raising Kids and Calves in Ranch Country That way, if I need to switch bulls around during breeding season because one gets injured, I have more accurate information to base my decisions on.” Sire verification also assists him in culling. “We can make stockers out of heifers that we know are sired by bulls that didn’t pan out or might not have had the best dispositions. Likewise, if we have a bull that really produces good daughters, we are more apt to give them a chance in the herd.” Johnson identifies the sire and dam on a heifer’s permanent ear tag so he can keep track of her over her lifetime, sorting her into the best breeding group to complement her genetic traits. “By the time a cow is coming with her second or third calf, she has basically proven she is going to do her job and has earned her place in the herd.” Limited Labor Force Sara is a fulltime nurse, traveling their three-county area providing wellness and advice for new mothers and infants. She stayed home and helped on the ranch when the kids were younger, but her passion for nursing compelled her to return to her career. “I miss her help now that she’s working fulltime,” said Johnson, “but she really loves nursing. She still helps when she’s home.” In addition to Travis, Sara and the kids, Travis’ dad Myron is part of the operation and co-owner of the feedlot. They also hire a fulltime employee to help with day-to-day labor.
Ranch work is also family time as the Johnsons enjoy lush green pasture, good cow horses and beautiful South Dakota scenery as they trail pairs to grass.
“The kids don’t like snow days,” laughed Sara. “It’s not a day off for them because they help with chores, shovel out bunks and feed cattle.” But that experience is raising adept young agriculturists. “They can pick out sick cattle and run any of the equipment on the place. In the winter, they feed on weekends or days off school, unroll hay and chop ice,” said Johnson. “Sidney especially likes filling the feed wagon with the payloader,” added Sara. Depending on the severity of the winter and amount of snowfall, they try to keep their cows on pasture or corn stalks with minimal supplemental feed until February. When the cows move into their third trimester, they will adjust their ration to meet their increasing nutritional demands. This coming spring, they plan to move the cows to pasture several miles from headquarters before they start calving. “Since we are calving later, we hope to reduce labor on the older cows and calve them on fresh pasture,” said Johnson. “We will still check them daily and tag the calves, but it’s a lot easier to haul pregnant cows than young pairs.”
Heifer calves are DNA tested through the Red Navigator test to help Johnson identify those most likely to excel on their ranch as mother cows.
46 American Red Angus Magazine n October 2019
Johnson concluded, “I keep myself pretty grounded in management. I’ve followed the advice of our neighbor who got me started in Red Angus when I was young. He said, ‘Save on fences and equipment and buy good bulls.’ It was good advice and I believe in what we are doing.” n

At the very heart of the beef industry, commercial cows are quietly raising their calves out on the range. Sometimes referred to as calf factories, they are the vital component to beef production and often ranchers' pride and joy for their no-nonsense, productive work ethic. fying genes and physiological traits that enhance production and reproductive efficiency in range beef cows. The cows in Fort Keogh’s research herd are a genetic composite of 50% Red Angus, 25% Charolais and 25% Tarentaise. Results from his team’s research contribute to developing methods that minimize animal input requirements and enhance lifetime production characteristics.
The Red Angus female has mastered the skills necessary to excel on the range and bring home a good calf each fall – and she’s easily won the hearts of business-minded cattle producers. With all the traits necessary to contribute positively to the bottom line, ranchers using Red Angus genetics don’t have to worry because their cows have it covered. Most-Favored Female According to Firesteel, South Dakota, rancher Jack Bickel, his daughter and business partner Robin, and brother Keith Bickel, Red Angus cows are the perfect fit for their ranch. “We want our cows to have good personality – or disposition – and to calve unassisted,” said Jack. “They also need to raise a nice-sized calf and breed back while existing on our often-harsh west river South Dakota ranch.” Robin added, “We also want solid maternal instincts and milking ability while maintaining a good body condition score and uniformity. I think all of these characteristics play a huge role in the overall stayability of each cow, her ability to raise a beautiful calf and her aptness to breed back each year.” The Bickel family started using Red Angus bulls on their Hereford first-calf heifers in 1979 and were so impressed that the F1 calves outweighed the mature cows’ straight-bred calves, that they continued to use Red Angus ever since. Each October, they haul their Red Angus calves to the Mobridge Livestock Market in Mobridge, South

Dakota, for the Special Red Angus Feeder Calf Sale. The steer calves wear the Feeder Calf Certification Program yellow tag, verifying age, source and Red Angus genetics. “Our replacement-quality Red Angus heifers have been bringing a premium over the steers since 2005,” said Jack. “That year’s fall calf run was a turning point in the cattle industry when people looking for good females realized the value of Red Angus genetics. Over the years, we’ve seen heifers bring premiums as much as 50 cents per pound over their steer mates, and even in more depressed markets, buyers were still paying a premium for good Red Angus heifers.” Backed by Research According to Dr. Andy Roberts, research animal scientist and physiologist at USDA-ARS Fort Keogh LARRL in Miles City, Montana, cows with certain qualities make them valuable members of a ranch's society, and Red Angus cows in general carry these attributes. Roberts focuses his research on identi-

“Longevity is the first and foremost most-important trait when talking about production efficiency in a commercial cow-calf operation that markets its calves at weaning,” said Roberts. “On average, half of all heifers retained for replacements are gone by the age of 5. This means these cows never reach their full production efficiency for calf weaning weight which is at 5 to 6 years of age.” Roberts said his research proves an 80to 90-pound difference in the weaning weight of calves raised by a 2-year-old heifer versus a 5-year-old cow. That equates to a lot of pay weight on sale day. “When you compare ranches that have a 14% replacement rate versus an 18% replacement rate, the increase in production is substantial,” explained Roberts. “Figuring the sum of the calf and cull cow sale weight, ranches with a 14% cow replacement rate will see a 27% increase in production, and a 33% increase in the amount of dollars produced by each cow over her lifetime. I do not know of any other traits that have this level of impact on production efficiency.”

She’s Got This tion to less feed requirements and not associated with the amount of feed intake. “Our data indicate that reduced feed intake – or negative RFI – is associated with decreased pregnancy rate,” he said. “In other words, open heifers have lower feed intake.”
When selecting new genetics for their herd, the Bickel father-daughter team relies on genetic prediction numbers to make their selections. “As commercial Red Angus breeders, we are extremely fortunate to have Total Herd Reporting backing the reliability of EPDs and indexes,” said Robin. “This allows us to focus on the traits that specifically complement great mother cows that will raise a solid calf to market as either a replacement heifer or a feeder steer.” Jack confirmed. “All the EPDs that are available to me as a commercial cattleman are of great help when I’m selecting herd sires. The seedstock producers we buy genetics from continue to embrace the foundations of the breed that emphasize good females.” Factors Affecting Longevity “The Red Angus breed has measured longevity through its Stayability EPD longer than any other breed,” said Roberts, “and it is backed by 25 years of Total Herd Reporting.” In a specific study that looked at the impact of traits on longevity, researchers at Fort Keogh identified five main factors affecting a cow’s career. 1. Calving Difficulty Calving difficulty in heifers was the single most influential factor negatively affecting longevity. Red Angus’ longtime commitment to low birthweight and Calving Ease Direct and Calving Ease Maternal EPDs all contribute to improved longevity by preventing calving difficulties. 2. Date of First Calving Early puberty and early conception rates contribute to a cow’s lifetime success. The earlier she calves, the more time she has to recover for breed-back, making it more likely she’ll rebreed on first cycle. Red Angus’ early maturity and fertility contribute positively to a cow’s longevity. 3. Fleshing Ability Research confirms that cows maintain-
How Convenient Convenience traits such as mothering ability, docility, foot and leg structure, udder suspension and teat size, have long played into ranchers’ keep-cull decisions. While these traits are less measurable and more subjective to an individual producer’s eye, they play a significant role in day-to-day ranch operations. Bickels market their calves each October through the Special Red Angus Feeder Calf Sale in Mobridge, South Dakota. The steers are enrolled in the FCCP program and wear the yellow tag.
ing adequate body condition at weaning time are less likely to fall out of production. 4. High Milk Production Cows that produce too much milk are more likely to be open in the fall than cows with adequate milk production. Additionally, feed requirements for high milk producers can be too great to sustain, especially in more arid range environments. Maintenance energy requirements are greater for cows with high Milk EPDs, even when they aren’t lactating. 5. Feeding Protocols Long-term research shows heifer development and supplementation during winter grazing can influence longevity. In contrast to common thinking, more is not always better. Roberts’ team focuses their feeding strategy to reduce maintenance energy requirements therefore building efficiency. In addition, their research indicates feeding strategies can program efficiency in future offspring. Roberts clarified that his use of the term “efficiency” is in rela-

“Economically relevant traits and convenience traits are both extremely important to us,” said Robin. “Their correlation is imperative to the success of our herd and what we bring to the market every year for other breeders and consumers.” The Bickels maintain special records on docility and maternal traits, and cows that don’t meet their standards are culled from their herd. “In our calving book we keep a page labeled ‘Personality Disorders.’ If a cow reacts overly aggressive towards people, we put her on the list,” said Jack. “We’ve been culling that way for years and now it’s rare we have any females on the list.” They also keep track of cows that require more attention during calving season for birthing assistance or to ensure the calf nurses. “We implemented the ‘One-Chance Rule’ and if we ever have to spend time with a cow for any problem she’s had before – like not being motherly, unfavorable disposition or needing calving assistance twice in her life – we pound her out in the fall,” said Jack. Convenience traits do add to the profitability of a calf crop.

She’s Got This When cows perform the job for which they are commissioned – birthing and raising a calf each year – a rancher’s labor investment is decreased, more calves survive at birth and calves are healthier throughout their lifetime equating to more high-quality calves on sale day. Additionally, cows with good maternal instincts and docile dispositions get their calves up and nursing soon after birth. Research has proven calves that receive their first meal of colostrum within two hours of birth carry that health throughout their lives exhibiting less morbidity after weaning and better health in the feedlot. Foot and leg structure are huge components that improve the quality of life for the animal and reduce labor, outputs and frustration for the rancher. Lame cows don’t travel, reducing their foraging ability and milk output. Anyone who has had to trail in a lame cow
from the far pasture empathizes with the frustration of each painful step, treatment costs, reduced production and lost time. All of these convenience traits add up to healthier, more marketable calves on sale day resulting in a bigger paycheck. Ranchers are more likely to retain cows in the herd that embody these convenience traits, reducing replacement rates and increasing the number of marketable replacement-quality females. In the Fort Keogh research herd, 3.5% of sold females were culled because of disposition and another 3.5% because of udder or teat problems. Calf death loss accounted for 13.3% of those sold, which is impacted by calving difficulty. “Although we haven’t measured it, factors associated with colostrum intake also affected the calf death loss figure, said Roberts, which is related to a female’s maternal instincts.
She’s Got This “I am very grateful that I have the honor of working beside my dad and Uncle Keith on the ranch that has been in our family for over 100 years,â€? concluded Robin. “We share a love and appreciation for our Red Angus cows, and I’m hopeful each year when we load the calves on the semis to go to market that our hard work pays off so those calves can do right by whomever buys them. Raising cattle is more than just a job or a sale barn check – it’s our heart – and my heart is proud to run Red Angus.â€? With all factors added to the equation, whether measurable or defined by cowboy logic, the Red Angus cow excels as the most-favored female in all sectors, phases and environments of beef production. She’s just out on the range converting forage to beef by raising her calf year after year. She’s low maintenance in terms of feed and labor, yet highly productive. In short, she’s just doing her job. She’s got this. â–

Red Angus Summit Provides Opportunities for Improvement for Producers by Brandi Buzzard Frobose, RAAA Director of Communications
It was a mild week in July when cattle producers from across the Midwest gathered in Kansas City for the Red Angus Summit. Held July 14-16 at the Embassy Suites, producers heard firsthand from industry leaders about how to become more profitable and successful through workshops and thought-provoking discussion. Corbitt Wall, commercial cattle manager for DVAuction, kicked off the Summit on Sunday night with a riveting discussion of feeder cattle marketing, transfer of ownership within the beef industry and why beef producers should work to avoid the onset of vertical integration. Wall shared his many decades’ worth of beef industry experiences with attendees who learned of trending ways to market their cattle. Wall said producers who wish to remain profitable and seek premium prices for their cattle should consider utilizing marketing cooperatives. He suggested firms such as Producers of Omaha and Consolidated Beef Producers as companies that do a good job of working with small feeders. “We have to continue working with each other to get more negotiated trade. Don’t sell all your cattle on the basis. Support your local sale barn,” concluded Wall. Wrapping up Sunday night’s event was a tour of the Windy Wine Co., owned by the Keesaman family. The Keesamans, who raise Red Angus cattle, also operate KK Farms and developed their flagship wine, Angus Red, based on their love of the breed. Monday, July 15, the program resumed with a highly beneficial foot-scoring demonstration and workshop at the Tailgate Ranch in Tonganoxie, Kansas, led by Ryan Boldt, RAAA director of breed improvement, and the RAAA commercial marketing team. Tailgate Ranch is a commercial Red Angus operation managed by Kirk Sours in northeast Kansas. They have bought
Red Angus bulls exclusively for the past 25 years and are a predominantly springcalving herd that specializes in bred heifer development. The ranch is heralded for its commitment to quality and was awarded the BIF Commercial Producer of the Year Award in 2003. Boldt and Red Angus staff provided examples of ideal feet and how to recognize potential signs of future foot problems. Attendees scored several females to tune their eye and get good experiential practice to take home to their own operations. After lunch and networking at the hotel, Summit attendees split into two groups for afternoon tours at the Livestock Marketing Association and Bichelmeyer Meat Co. At the Livestock Marketing Association headquarters in Kansas City, Missouri, Kristen Parman, vice president of membership services, spoke with attendees about the many roles of LMA and how marketers and producers can work together on issues in the beef industry. Chelsea Good, vice president of government and industry affairs, explained the varied policy issues that LMA is working on, and the implications they would have on the industry. The core values of LMA are a belief in the competitive auction method and true price discovery – two topics that led to much discussion during the tour. Attendees at the LMA headquarters also heard from Chad Barker and Scott Utecht of National Beef Packing Co. who explained the business structure and many of the programs underneath the NBP umbrella. National Beef Packing is a proponent of value-added beef, an aspect that

many Red Angus producers and FCCP tag users find appealing as they look for additional ways of marketing their calves. Later in the afternoon, Joe Bichelmeyer, owner of Bichelmeyer Meat Co. in downtown Kansas City, Kansas, opened the doors to the historic business and gave attendees a history of the meatpacking business. Bichelmeyer is a fifth-generation meat man who also raises Red Angus cattle on the Silkville Ranch in Williamsburg, Kansas. He explained to attendees why Bichelmeyer Meat Co. has overcome a flood and fire to remain successful with its clientele and how Red Angus cattle have played a role in that success. A networking social and dinner rounded out Monday’s activities before the program resumed on Tuesday with a focus on reproductive performance and strategies for improvement. Dr. Jordan Thomas, assistant Extension professor and state beef reproduction specialist at the University of Missouri, spoke about the value of the Red Angus female and why they are becoming so popular.

Red Angus Summit Provides Opportunities for Improvement for Producers He also shared the success of the ShowMe-Select Heifer Replacement program which is the first statewide on-farm beef heifer development and marketing program in the nation. The program heavily emphasizes AI and ultrasound technology to positively impact its participating producers. Dr. Thomas was hugely popular with attendees as he encouraged them to think about how to further improve on the Red Angus female, even though they are at the top of the market. Dr. Rick Funston, professor and reproductive physiologist at the University of Nebraska, challenged the thinking around current reproductive practices and other long-standing beliefs in the beef industry. Funston posed the question, “Does the seedstock industry waste too many resources to the point that it’s detrimental?” He also encouraged producers to comply with breeding protocols and pay attention to any added stress they might be subjecting their cows to during breeding season.
Red Angus Summit attendees practice foot scoring at the Tailgate Ranch in Tonganoxie, Kansas.
The Red Angus marketing team provided valuable insight into the past sale season’s results; reporting on average prices, factors to improve one’s bull sale and overall trends they observed during the thousands of miles the team traveled representing the Red Angus breed at bull sales across the nation.
Roundtable for Sustainable Beef and spoke about the importance of sharing the story of sustainable beef with an inquiring consumer audience. She also encouraged producers to create their own sustainable beef protocol in regards to grazing management and water conservation plans.
Closing out the summit with a thoughtprovoking discussion about sustainability was Debbie Lyons-Blythe, rancher and agriculture advocate from White City, Kansas. Lyons-Blythe is co-chair of the Outreach Working Group for the U.S.
The goal of Red Angus Summit and all Red Angus educational programs is to provide cattle producers with opportunities to increase their operation’s profitability. For additional program updates, visit RedAngus.org.

eproducve efficiency is top of the list. Wean a healthy calf off range without extra feed or aenon and do it every year. The calves produced must perform well in the feedyard and hang a carcass that brings you a PREMIUM. That kind of program takes YEARS to develop, and discipline to connually maintain and improve. Member News In Memory
John P. “Jack” Chase After a long, hard-fought battle, John P. “Jack” Chase, Jr. of Leiter, Wyoming, passed away at the Sheridan Hospital on Sept. 5, 2019, with his family by his side. Jack was born on a small farm in Canton, Massachusetts, on July 2, 1934, to Barbara and John P. Chase. He grew up in a large family with an older brother, George, and four sisters: Barbara, Anna, Sally and Laura. There was never a dull moment. He was surrounded by the farm animals. At a young age, Jack went to Teepee Lodge in the Big Horns with his family, and from that point on, Jack knew he wanted to live in the West and be a cowboy. He attended Milton Academy and graduated in 1952. He then headed west, thwarting his family’s desire that he attend Harvard. He spent a semester at the University of Colorado then transferred to Colorado A & M. He spent two years

After graduating from college with a degree in animal science, Jack worked on numerous ranches in Texas and Oklahoma. In 1960, the lease on Buffalo Creek Land Co. came up, and Jack took it over. Formerly owned and operated by Dr. Whedon, the land was then primarily used for sheep and had innumerable small buildings; it was called Whedonville. Jack began tearing down unnecessary structures, worked on building the cowherd, improving fences and developing water accessibility. In 1962, he met Gini Hardy who was visiting from the East. They were married in February 1963. Gini moved to the ranch with him to live in one of the original houses. There was running water, but no

there, then joined the Army. He was stationed at Fort Bliss in Texas. He returned to Colorado in 1956 but Colorado A&M was now Colorado State University. Sadly, they were no longer the Aggies. At CSU, he joined the Rodeo Club to hone his calf roping skills. He also attended a session at Toots Mansfield’s Roping School in Texas.

telephone or electricity. The power line came in not long after, and a phone line a year later just before their son John was born in 1964. They then moved into a new house on the ranch which they lived in, with some modifications, until his death. Their daughter Lolly, (Elizabeth) was born in 1966, and their son Galen in 1968. As his children grew, they became an important part of the ranch, and they brought him great joy. Many, many summers were spent working on innumerable 4-H animals. The cows that came with the ranch were Herefords, and Jack began replacing them with Black Angus. In the late 1960s he became interested in Red Angus. In 1972, Gini bought the first Red Angus females, and together with their family, they gradually increased the purebred herd to become one of the breed’s leading herds, with successful sales every year. Jack was extremely active in the Red Angus Association of America and served two terms as a director, then two terms as president. He served on the board of the
Beef Improvement Association, then was president 1990-91. He received the BIF Continuing Service Award in 1992. In 1992 he and Gini were given the BIF Pioneer Breeder Award. During their time in the RAAA, they were the only two-time winner of the Breeder of the Year award, in 1988 and 2002; and the only two-time winner of the Distinguished Service Award, in 1993 and 2009. They were selected for the Pioneer Breeder Award in 1997. At its 50th Anniversary Celebration, the breed recognized them as being one of its 50 Most-Influential Breeders. Jack was an active member of his community. He served on the board and then as president of School District #3, (Arvada/Clearmont). He served on the Whitney Benefits Board of Trustees for 42 years, from 1972 to 2004. To date, he is the longest serving member on that board. As a board member, Jack was very instrumen-
tal in getting the ice rink in Sheridan. He also served on the board of the YMCA. Jack was passionate about his ranch and he was never happy when he was away from it, hence there were never many vacations. He loved the mornings, and being on a good horse, especially one that would watch a cow, had a big, fast trot, and could go all day. He was always happiest when he was in the saddle on his ranch, on a favorite horse, with a couple of his faithful dogs running along beside him. Jack was extremely competitive and loved most sports, but hockey was his favorite. There were many winter evenings he would leave home at 7:30 and drive 60 miles to play at the outdoor rink. He would get home after midnight. He loved it. In 2006, Sheridan Hockey gave him an award as the Most Inspirational Player. Jack loved weather and the worse it was, the better he liked it. He maintained a NOAA weather station and dutifully

recorded daily highs, lows and precipitation for over 50 years. There were other things that could be left undone, but never the weather recording. In 2004, NOAA named Jack as the recipient of the Edward H. Stoll Award for 50 years of outstanding service in the Cooperative Weather Observer Program. Jack loved his family, and he was loved by them. He is survived by his wife, Gini; his three children: John ( Karen); Lolly (Dave) Wagner, and Galen (Jill); and seven muchadored grandchildren: Caroline and Jack Chase; Elizabeth, Lucy and Eleanor Wagner; and Peyton and Olivia Chase; and by four sisters: Barbara (Chuck) Harwood, Sally Flynn, Laura Crocker (Jane), Louly Chase and one brother, Willard Chase. Jack was preceded in death by his parents, sister Anna, and brother George. Jack’s service was held at St. Peter’s Episcopal Church, on Sept. 14. ■
