Farm and Ranch Safety – A Topic we all Take for Granted! S – Slow down! T – Think about what task you’re about to take on! O – Observe the hazards that do or could exist! P – Plan to mitigate or eliminate the hazards!

Farming and ranching provide a quality of life experience that most can only dream of. Playing with newborn calves, foals and baby goats or sheep and driving tractors is something everyone dreams about if only they could live on a farm. Maybe, just maybe, we all need to do a better job of educating ourselves, our family members and our team members of the dangers that lurk out on the open prairies, in the cattle pens and grain bins. I know we can all know someone that has been injured or has died in a farm related accident. This is becoming an all-too-common occurrence on American farms. According to the most recent U.S. Department of Labor report, agriculture ranked as the most hazardous industry in the U.S. in 2017-18. It goes on to say that the three main causes of fatalities are machinery, motor vehicles and drowning. The top causes of non-fatal accidents include falls, animals and machinery/vehicles. What is even more alarming is the number of accidents involving children! I know we are all guilty, myself included, of wanting to teach our children at a young age how to run equipment, ATVs and drive pickups. Gosh, there is no telling how many hours I have ridden on the fender of an openstation tractor pulling a disk harrow or a hay mower. I wouldn’t even consider doing that with my children or grandchildren. But I am guilty of get-

6 American Red Angus Magazine ■ December 2019

ting a false sense of security due to having a child inside an enclosed cab. Friend, they are only one split second, glass-shattering, door-jarring moment away from danger. They still need to be buckled into a seat or secured inside the cab in some fashion. According to the statistics, a child dies in a farm-related accident about every three days. That just is not acceptable! Folks, what is really sad is the fact that from studies performed, they say perhaps 80% of all farm accidents result in carelessness and failure to deal with hazards in a safe manner. Many accidents are avoidable. One statement I read said, “We get going too fast sometimes and all it takes is one split second to go from good to bad. Sometimes it’s just taking a step back, taking a deep breath and, instead of going 100 miles per hour, slow down and use some caution.” Those words absolutely ring true for me. The older I get, the less I get accomplished and the less time I have to get it done in! However, I do realize that it would be a lot less wise use of my time to be laying in a hospital bed or even worse - having to attend a funeral - due to an accident. I challenge you to think about the danger that you put yourself or a member of your crew in, and each of us come up with a plan on how to eliminate or mitigate the danger. Unlike cats, we are only given one life – let’s be smart with it! ■

Female Factor: Women Played an Active Role in Red Angus from the Start One of the most unique truths about the Red Angus breed is that women played a prominent role in organizational leadership from the very beginning. The picture accompanying this article is worth more than 1,000 words in that regard. Founding members of the Red Angus Association of America included five females: Anne Gayden (inset photo, top right), Sal Forbes (first on the left, front row), Mrs. George Hetzel (second from the left, front row), Mrs. S. Taylor McDaniel (second from the right, front row) and Vernice Chiga (first on the right, front row). These five ladies hailed from five different states – Louisiana, Texas, Oklahoma, Kansas and Wyoming. Their names are recorded prominently in Red Angus history for good reason. They were actively involved in giving the Red Angus breed its start, and should be recognized as trailblazers and cattle industry entrepreneurs, because they were exactly that. The breed would not be where it is today without their influence. The first RAAA Board of Directors, identified in the first-ever Red Angus press release, dated March 29, 1954, included two women as officers. Mrs. S. Taylor McDaniel served as first vice president. Anne Gayden was chosen as third vice president. This may not seem unusual today, but it was out of the norm in the middle 1950s. We sometimes refer to Betty Grimshaw as the most-photographed person in Red Angus history. Betty worked for Red Angus for over 40 years, which explains why she shows up in so many of our old albums and other photos. Betty wore many different hats during her tenure, which included good times as well as those more challenging. She’s smiling in almost all of those photos, which is “classic Betty” for those that have known her.

10 American Red Angus Magazine ■ December 2019

Follow that up with Sybil Parker, who was the first paid employee of the RAAA as well as its first executive secretary, hired in 1960. Her husband, C.T. Parker, worked as an unpaid field man for Red Angus, while Sybil ran the fledgling Association. She stayed on with RAAA through its office relocation from Ballinger, Texas, to Denton, Texas. By 1968, all-female staff included Mrs. Parker, Armenta Singdahlsen, Barbara Bynum, Betty Grimshaw and Betty Grandey. It was not until 2000 that Red Angus would have its first female president, Linda Anderson, from the panhandle of Nebraska. After Linda broke the ice, two others followed in her footsteps: Kelli Brown from Texas served two terms (20082010), as did Kim Ford, Linda’s daughter, also from Nebraska, and also a two-term president (2014-2016). There will be more in the future so stay tuned. As we think about the female influence on the Red Angus breed over many decades, it really comes down to the fact that leadership skills, good ideas, hard work and creativity are non-gender-specific traits. The ladies mentioned in this article, and hundreds more not mentioned, earned their place in the annals of Red Angus history based on their individual merit. They contributed positively to the growth and development of the breed in too many ways to be counted. It’s a blessing that Red Angus chose from the start to double the size of its available brain power by proactively involving women in key positions. Kudos to the RAAA of years gone by, but even more than that, thanks to all Red Angus women – past and present – for engaging your time and talents to better the breed.

Marketing Update by Chessie Mitchell, Tag Program Coordinator

Plan for Your 2020 Tag Order As the calves are on trucks headed out of town and a moment of relief comes flooding in, ranchers everywhere can say another year of the cattle business is under their belt. This past year was one that seemed like it was never going to end, but as the New Year draws closer, we can look forward to setting ourselves up for the best possible outcome in the upcoming calving season. Here are some simple steps to navigating Red Angus tagging programs in 2020: 1) Order your tags early! Cattle that qualify can be enrolled as early as when the bulls are pulled. During the spring months, processing times seem to slow down due to a high volume of orders. So, make sure to plan ahead and order tags as early as possible. This will help ensure that you receive your tags in plenty of time and that everything is correct with the order. It’s important to note that EID-only, combo and custom-imprint orders take five business days before shipping.

3) Understand the different tag and imprint options. The RAAA FCCP/Allied Access tag programs have three options for program compliant tags in each program: a. Visual (dangle) tag – 99 cents each b. EID only buttons - $2 each c. Correlating combination visual tag with button and RFID with button - $3 each 2) Keep an updated inventory of the bulls you turned out. Having every bull transferred into the appropriate ranch name and account at RAAA is one of the first steps in taking part in all of the Red Angus marketing programs. The Feeder Calf Certification Program is well documented to add value to Red Angus-influenced calf crops. This age-, source- and genetic-verification program all hinges on the correct and timely transfer of Red Angus bulls to the correct account. Seedstock providers complete transfers after the sale but if it hasn’t been completed in the past six months and the animal isn’t visible in your account, contact your RAAA staff to confirm the transfer is completed.

Customers have the option to add sequential management numbers under five digits, 840-compliance or a line of text shorter than 15 characters, including spaces. 4) Having the seller complete the Purchased Bred Females form. Calves out of commercial heifers bred to qualifying registered Red Angus bulls also qualify for the FCCP program, but only if the seller completes the Purchased Bred Females form. This form is the key component in enrolling the resulting calves into the FCCP. Ask your supplier to assist with this form, which is available at redangus.org/marketing/taggingprograms. ■

Member Services Bulletin by Halla Pfeiff, Director of Office Operations

The Mindset of a Child With this title, you might think, “What in the world does this have to do with Member Services, and how does this, in any form, help me?” Well bear with me for just a moment. First, I encourage you to think of a child that you know and some of the questions he or she has asked you. Most of the time, children ask what might seem like the simplest question, but they need to know the answer for better understanding of the situation or that moment in time. Sometimes – and more often than not – we get caught up in being worried what people think rather than what questions we should ask for better understanding. So, what questions should you ask the Association? You could even think of it as a Red Angus wish list. We would enjoy the opportunity to help achieve your goals. We know there are so many items to be considered, but allow us to propose some thoughts. 1. How do I get help with sale catalog layout? We offer a free service that puts your animals into a sale catalog template that can be manipulated to fit your needs and wants. All we need is a list of the animals’ registration numbers in lot form, and if you want it in Template A or Template B. More details available at redangus.org/marketing/sale-planner. 2. When do I submit data? Get on our mail-out list to get all reports mailed to you on the days we request it. Even if you are on this list, you are not required to submit all information via paper, but it does provide a hard reminder. Also, save our annual Christmas card and make sure to add all deadlines to your calendar – both paper and electronically. 3. Where do I purchase Red Angus clothing to promote my business? A newly opened website with Lands’ End allows you to get clothing with the “Red Angus. Ranch Tested. Rancher Trusted.” brand. Shop online at redangus.org/red-angus-shop/. 4. How can I add value to my calves? Tag your calves through the Feeder Calf Certification Program (FCCP, Red Angus Yellow tag). Superior Livestock data has confirmed that FCCPtagged calves have nearly a $3 advantage over those that are not tagged. Talk with

any of our Commercial Marketing team members about how to achieve this. Also, more sale barns than ever before are offering special Red Angus Feeder Calf sales. 5. Where can our junior members learn about the breed and industry? Get them involved with the Junior Red Angus Association of America through various programs – Young Stockman Program, Round-Up, leadership positions, scholarships, and much more. Contact Kim Heller, Junior Programs Coordinator, juniors@redangus.org, with questions. 6. How can I receive my ultrasound data back faster before sale day? Register your animals early, schedule early with your ultrasound tech, send your technician your barn sheet electronically, and be prepared for a backlog at the lab due to an influx of submissions. 7. Where can I go to better understand RAAA’s Rules and Regulations? Download the “How To” document available under Herd Management at RedAngus.org. This document provides step-by-step descriptions of RAAA’s Rules and Regulations and additional breakdowns of business of the Association.

THR Deadlines November - PAST DUE • Fall Heifer Exposure Requested • Spring Birth & Weaning Requested December • First installment of Fall THR billed January • Spring Herd Inventory Requested February • Fall Heifer Exposure Due 8. How can I have fewer hang ups when registering calves? Start early, but also recall what items caused hang ups the previous year. More than likely it had to do with DNA testing. Make sure ALL your sires are on file for parentage. Also, donor dams must have a DNA sample on file for parentage. Be aware of any genetic defect carriers that may be in your herd. Depending on the mating of the calf, it could mean additional DNA testing for defects. All animals can be reviewed for testing requirements through REDSPro/ myreport/DNA Genetic Defect Summary and DNA Report. 9. How can RAAA assist my customers that need additional advice on bull and female selections on sale day? Visit with one of our Commercial Marketing team members and ask them to contact your customer(s) about their needs and goals. They are happy to work with them prior to and on sale day. 10. How can I be more involved with the Association? First, get involved on the state affiliate level. Also, ask any staff or Board member about the Association committee structure and where you can best serve. Attend as many Red Angus functions as possible, especially annual convention, Summit and Young Guns.

Call or email us with any question(s) that you may have. When you succeed, we succeed!

Improve Genetic Predictions by Collecting Female Genotypes by Ryan Boldt, Director of Breed Improvement Technology that is used to calculate EPDs is ever evolving and improving. However, one aspect that will always be essential to accurate evaluation is the collection and submission of data to form genetic predictions. In terms of data collection, one of the most recent advancements was the ability to use information from the DNA of an animal as an additional source of data to be used in the evaluation. This information is combined with phenotypes and pedigree information to calculate EPDs. Since DNA testing was first introduced, a common trend was to see a higher percentage of the tests performed each year were done so on bulls. The graph to the right shows the percentage of genotypes performed on females and males since 2012. Since 2012 the percentages of tests performed have represented about 60% male calves and 40% female calves. In early years this was most likely driven by the price of the genotyping tests. However, lower density tests have been developed and for the last four years (2015-2019) the percentage of genotypes performed on females has increased. While this is great news that people are realizing the value of collecting more genomic information on females and the benefits it provides, we still have females that have been retained in the herd that have had phenotypic data collected on calves but do not have genomic information to relate these records to.

This has led to the research collaboration known as the Red Cow Rally between RAAA and Neogen. The goal of the project is to increase the number of genotypes available on Red Angus females for use in the genetic evaluation. By increasing the genomic information available for gender-limited female traits such as STAY, HPG, ME and CEM, we will be able to increase the predictive ability of those EPD analyses. In order for genomic information to be the most informative, it is always best to genotype as many animals in the group as possible. This is why the program was designed to require that in order to participate in the program, a minimum of 90% of the mature cow herd must be genotyped. To reach this limit, genotyping costs will be reduced to a research rate. Not only this, but additional rebates will also be available for members that submit additional phenotypic data on mature females.

diction accuracy of the animals within their herd, as well as Red Angus cattle in general. In the current genetic evaluation, one way that we evaluate how much information is garnered from the addition of a genotype is through progeny equivalents. Progeny equivalents are simply how many progeny records would need to be submitted to achieve an equal level of accuracy for those traits.

By participating in this project, RAAA members will increase the pre-

Generally, progeny equivalents for most traits range anywhere from five to 25 animals. By submitting information on older females, this should give them a dramatic increase in accuracy over what would be collected from progeny records. While genotyping is very informative to increase EPD accuracy, it will never replace the need to collect valuable phenotypic information. Both of these sources of data are combined to provide the most accurate genetic evaluation.

The onset of the IGS-BOLT evaluation, paired with the submission of phenotypic records, has led to a new era in genetic evaluation for the cattle industry. In an effort to collect necessary female genotype and phenotype information to improve genetic predictions, the Red Angus Association of America Board of Directors has approved the Red Cow Rally. The Rally research collaboration between RAAA and Neogen is designed to increase phenotypic data collection and submission for mature weights, body condition scores and genotypes on Red Angus females. A limited number of research genotypes (GGP-LD) and rebate funds will be available for the project, so discounts and rebates will be issued on a first-come, first-served basis.

HOW IT WORKS:

RULES AND RESTRICTIONS:

• Participants that submit both mature weights and body condition scores electronically on 90%+ of current active cow inventory will receive an additional, one-time $5 rebate per head.

2. DNA samples must be submitted via Allflex Tissue Sampling Unit or blood card on the electronic Red Cow Rally order form. TSU orders larger than 50 must be submitted in 96-well trays.

• Members will receive a research price of $20 for genomic tests in order to DNA test 90%+ of their current active cow inventory. An additional $5 rebate will be available for females tested that are 6+ years of age.

TO ENROLL: Fallon Flick,

DNA programs coordinator (940) 477-4589 fallon@redangus.org

24 American Red Angus Magazine n December 2019

1. All members must first enroll by signing a contract of understanding of the program requirements to participate. Research prices and rebates are only available to Red Cow Rally participants.

3. Payment for DNA testing must be made in full at the time of sample submission. 4. Rebates will be issued as a credit to the member account once additional data requirements have been met and verified. 5. Weight and BCS measurements are required to be taken at the time of weaning a calf during the duration of the project.

Women Shoulder More Responsibility, Leadership in Ag by Sarah Hill for American Red Angus Magazine Women have always been active participants on the farm and ranch. My mom tells stories of how my grandmother milked cows right alongside my grandfather and could milk as fast by hand as a milking machine does today. I also reflect on the story of how my mom milked cows one fall morning, and then went to the hospital that evening to give me life.

I am sure many of you can tell similar stories of women in your family who have left a major impact on the history of your ranch, and not just because they cooked dinner for all the ranch hands, but because they were working right alongside their husbands, fathers and sons to help the ranch grow and prosper. Women in the agriculture industry today are no different, however, there are more opportunities than ever before for women to be actively involved in helping the family farming operation to thrive. Women help with breeding, feeding, doctoring and selecting cattle, in addition to keeping records, submitting registration papers, planning sales, promoting cattle on the ranch website and social media pages, and much more. It is also not a surprise to see a woman working in the ag industry as a nutritionist, veterinarian, Extension educator, ag teacher, ag equipment salesperson or in another important role that serves farmers and ranchers. Agriculture industry companies are also hiring women CEOs. “There is no woman on the planet that’s tougher than a woman who’s involved in the agriculture industry,” said Jessie Jarvis, a third-generation Idaho cattle rancher. “Most women in the industry have some

Programming for Farm Women Seeing that women are taking an ever-increasing leadership role in the agriculture industry, many states now offer educational programs to teach women about the business side of farming. Annie’s Project is an example of one of those programs. Jade Hargrafen, Delaware County Program Director with Iowa State University Extension & Outreach, helps plan programming every two years for farm women in Delaware County, Iowa.

other job in addition to working on the farm and raising a family – every responsibility in some way falls on women. I think that’s something that needs to be celebrated. I definitely think that women don’t get the credit they deserve for all that they do.” A new Farm Bureau survey showed that 91% of the 3,000 female survey respondents believe there should be more women in leadership roles in the ag industry. The survey also found that 50% of the women surveyed have started their own business that is still operating; 25% have not started a business but would like to in the future.

A mostly female crew has always run Jarvis’ family operation, comprised of her mother, aunt, grandmother and herself.

Women Shoulder More Responsibility, Leadership in Ag “Annie’s Project empowers farm and ranch women to be more successful in their farming operations,” Hargrafen said. “The program focuses on risk areas such as financial, human resources, grain marketing and production. Participating in the program gives women the confidence to be a better business partner and ask questions when signing documents.”

According to Hargrafen, Annie’s Project empowers farm and ranch women to be more successful in their farming\ operations.

Designed for any woman working in the agriculture industry, whether on the farm or in the industry, Annie’s Project is a six-week program that features female speakers discussing each area. The national organization that funds Annie’s Project is endowed, so participants only have to pay $75 for the entire sixweek course. “Participants receive a binder of resources and a flash drive with electronic resources,” Hargrafen added. “There are some scholarship programs available as well.” Annie’s Project offers programming in 33 different states, primarily focused in the Midwest, but the program is growing. In 2018, Iowa hosted their 100th Annie’s Project event, a major milestone. “We keep each course to about 25 women,” Hargrafen said. “That way, the women can build relationships and network. The majority of our classes fill up quickly, as it’s on a first-come, first-served basis.” Real Women’s Experiences American culture has come a long way in being more positive toward women in all aspects of work, and agriculture seems to be more receptive than other industries to women’s changing roles. “I don’t feel like women are oppressed,” said Katie Hatch, an agriculture teacher and rancher from Stoneham, Colorado. “If we work as hard as men, we can generally have the same opportunities.”

Women Shoulder More Responsibility, Leadership in Ag Jarvis agreed, adding that a mostly female crew has always run her family’s operation, comprised of her mother, aunt, grandmother and herself.

“They kept acting like they wanted to hire my boyfriend (now husband),” she said. “It was so frustrating.” Jarvis agreed that there are still situations where women are not taken as seriously.

“Working in a male-dominated industry, I’ve never felt threatened,” she said. “I know my own merit and the kind of cattle I raise. If I feel like I’m not being heard, I make myself heard. If I have a problem, I fix it. I don’t complain about it.” “We have a more hands-on role,” Hatch said. “Women are passionate about working in the agriculture industry. Many of my neighbors want to work alongside their husbands every day in ranching. I weigh in on bull buying decisions for our family’s operation.”

It also seems to be sometimes challenging for women to get hired on in traditionally male roles, such as interning as a ranch hand. “A lot of times, that position goes to males with ag experience,” Hatch said. “I only know one female about my age with a similar background who has been hired as an intern at a ranch. I understand that they have to make a business decision to invest in someone, but how do you get experience if you are never given a chance?”

Katie Hatch, a vo-ag teacher, is doing her part to empower women in agriculture as the next generation of female leaders.

However, there are still instances where perhaps women are not treated equally. Hatch shared a story about an interview she had for a ranch hand role in Nebraska.

encourage the next generation of female leaders to choose careers in the industry. Hatch is already doing her part as a vo-ag teacher.

“Being a young person in the industry, I think sometimes I may not be as respected,” Jarvis says. “If I was a 50year-old woman, would I experience the same things? I don’t know.”

“One of my best Supervised Agricultural Experiences is by a female student,” she said. “She has a fence building business. Some of my female students want to ranch, but it is hard if you don’t grow up in ranching or marry into it.”

Women still face additional obstacles to building businesses in the agriculture industry, as found in the Farm Bureau survey. Survey respondents cited prioritizing and finding time to accomplish tasks, acquiring financial support and marketing plan development as their top business challenges. Where Do We Go from Here? The next step in continuing to empower women in agriculture is to

“There is a rise of women in agriculture, and I’m all for that,” Jarvis added. “Women have an incredible and unique perspective on life and farming, so I’m excited for where the industry is headed.”

Pay it Forward by Giving Back by Tracey Koester, ARA Editorial Coordinator

The holiday season, by nature, tends to bring out heart-felt generosity in mankind. As folks reflect on their blessings of the past year, the holiday spirit often guides them to contribute charitable gifts with an attitude of thanksgiving and kindness. This mindset doesn't have to be limited to a certain time of year. According to Steve Newberry of Livingston, Montana, paying it forward by giving back to the industry in which you are involved is simply the right thing to do. “This is a philosophy, really, but whatever you are involved with, give back in various ways, shapes and forms,” he said. Newberry and his wife Shelley have generously supported the Red Angus Foundation, Inc. by giving monetarily since its inception nearly a decade ago, as well as donating time and talent with nine years of volunteer service on the RAFI board of directors, including two years as president. Over the years, numerous other major donors have contributed to RAFI as well, some choosing to remain anonymous. Newberry continued, “We have the financial wherewithal and want to give back to

those organizations in which we are involved. I was brought up in a home and company where charitable giving was the right thing to do.” The Newberrys pledged a $100,000 donation over five years and just sent their final installment to RAFI. “We wanted to lead by example to get the Foundation up and running, and we wanted to encourage others to step up and donate in any way they could,” he said. “It’s important for people – if you have the ability – to give back to the associations you are connected with. If we are part of an organization that is successful, perhaps we should pause and think, ‘How can I help this association be more effective and help more people achieve their goals?’” He continued, “I was never good at asking people for money because I felt that giving to whatever charity a person

chooses is very personal. I want to talk to people in general, encourage them to be thankful for what they have and what they are associated with, then to whatever degree they can, contribute to what they are passionate about.”

Pay it Forward by Giving Back Newberry stressed that not all contributions need to be financial. “Time and participation such as volunteer leadership, are also important to the life of an organization.” Why Red Angus? While Newberry wasn’t raised in agriculture, he quickly fell in love with the Red Angus breed when he acquired his Montana ranch 23 years ago. “I had to decide if I was going to lease the land or run my own cattle,” he said. “I have a career in operations, engineering, research and technology, and the fact that Red Angus is focused on being a science-driven breed was very appealing to me. The technical focus of EPDs – coupled with Total Herd Reporting and the dedication of our early leaders toward economically relevant traits – made it easy to choose Red Angus.” Red Angus’ strong maternal traits and quiet disposition, combined with efficient feeding qualities and the ability to grade

well on the rail, make the breed attractive to many sectors of the industry. “But how do we get paid for delivering more value?” asked Newberry. “We as seedstock suppliers – and cow-calf producers and stockers that are the recipients of our genetics – need to receive more value at all levels of input along the vertical supply chain.” “Therefore, we felt it was important to help fund research projects that will improve the breed,” said Newberry. “RAFI

44 American Red Angus Magazine n December 2019

gives us that opportunity. There’s a reason we as an industry are producing more beef with 30% less herd inventory. Science makes us more efficient. It didn’t just happen.” RAFI funds research projects on a variety of important areas, all geared toward advancing the breed’s value in the industry. Other Ways to Contribute Over the years, many members – including the Newberrys – have donated genetics to drive fundraisers. This past September at the National Red Angus Convention, they, along with partner Ryan Ludvigson, donated pick of their LN Cattle Co. open and bred heifers to the highest bidder during the RAFI fundraiser auction. “Since the Foundation has been hosting the Pick of the Herd, people have opened up their wallets for the opportunity at the freshest genetics in reputation Red Angus herds,” he said. “It works out for everybody.”

Pay it Forward by Giving Back Convention attendees in Lewistown, Montana, in 2013, will remember lively bidding on a commemorative 1874 Custom Hartford military rifle honoring RAAA’s 60th Anniversary. When Shelley won the final bid and accepted the rifle, she announced it was a birthday present for Steve who was unable to attend convention that year. “It hangs in our great room in our Montana ranch home,” smiled Newberry. Newberry encouraged other Red Angus stakeholders to look into charitable gifts, trusts and living legacies. “They are more complex than a simple donation,” he said, “but not as complicated as people think.” RAFI also offers an avenue to create memorial legacies for Red Angus families who have faced tragedies. Juniors benefit from scholarships in memory of Dee Sonstegard and Heather Presser that were set up by their respective families.

Even one-time gifts in memory of a loved one or gifts given as a tribute make a difference. Small gifts are important, too, embodying the thought that most everybody can do something. Future Leaders “Our donations also support the Junior Red Angus Association. We feel it is a good way to pay it forward to support the future of our breed by helping fund events that teach juniors skills and knowledge and providing them with a pathway to the future of Red Angus.” “I’ve adopted a philosophy that we are fortunate to live in this country and work in this industry,” said Newberry. When we look at the positive side of things, I encourage people to think, ‘What is my way, shape or form that I can give back?’ It’s important to demonstrate to our children this generosity and responsibility in order to give them that example.”

46 American Red Angus Magazine n December 2019

“Our children learn to be both a receiver of the funds – through the scholarships and programs – and then a donator to continue the cycle of giving. Juniors have benefitted from the donations which enrich the experience for these young Red Angus kids. It’s important for them to know that people in the industry helped them and I think the kids appreciate it.” Newberry said, “It is motivational to see these young kids step up and appreciate the benefit of receiving. We appreciate receiving the stacks of hand-written thankyou notes from the kids. Taking the time to express gratitude shows that we value these relationships. It’s part of teaching our youth a value system that includes courtesy and thankfulness.” Newberry’s dream for the future is to take college scholarships to a new level for Red Angus stakeholders’ children who want to make a significant difference in agriculture.

Pay it Forward by Giving Back “I’d love to see big grants like $50,000 a year for four years based on grades, curriculum, involvement and accountability. People that are making their living in the ag world might be struggling financially, so if we can help the kids whose dreams are to come back to agriculture, why not?” But a dream of this magnitude will take a generous mindset of the entire breed, not just a few contributors.

In the spirit of benevolence, Red Angus members and stakeholders will continue to improve the breed and advance the industry through RAFI, creating a momentum of generosity and progressiveness for this generation, our junior leaders and Red Angus innovators to come. By simply giving back, contributors are paying it forward to create a powerful cycle of philanthropy with an energy and strength that builds on itself and gains momentum over time. n

Member News In Memory

Joshua Dykes Joshua Solomon Dykes (47) went to be with Jesus on October 17, 2019. Josh died while doing what he loved; moving cattle back to his ranch. Josh was a dedicated disciple of the Lord Jesus, a faithful and loving husband, devoted father, cattle rancher (cowboy!), and owner of 9-Mile Ranch in Walla Walla County.

served on the board of directors for the National Junior American Simmental Association. He attended college at Walla Walla Community College and Washington State University while staying very involved in the cattle industry. In his 20s, Josh took his skills to the auto industry which eventually gave him the means to transition back to fulfilling his life-long dream of being a cattle rancher.

He was born August 4, 1972, in Mission Viejo, California, to Calvin and Sharon Dykes. He was preceded in death by his older brother, Jason. On January 2, 2012, he married the love of his life, Kristin (Brittain) Dykes. Josh was blessed with three beautiful children: Bailey Call (26), Jackson (7) and Shelby (4).

Those close to Josh knew him to be a decisive leader, purpose-driven (only one gear – fast), creative entrepreneur, avid outdoorsman, loyal friend, trusted mentor, generous steward and faithful servant. He brought out the best in those who worked alongside him. Nothing excited him more than working with the Lord to help others grow toward all they were created to be. He is simply unforgettable.

Josh graduated in 1990 from Winlock High School where he was elected Washington State FFA treasurer. He also

Dykes through the Herring Groseclose Funeral Home, 315 W. Alder St., Walla Walla, WA 99362. Bruce Durheim Bruce D. Durheim, 68, of Elm Lake, South Dakota, died Oct. 29, 2019, at his home. Bruce was born in Aberdeen, South Dakota, on May 13, 1951, to Clifford and Sylvia (Ofstedal) Durheim, the fourth of seven children. He was raised on farms in North Brown County and attended school at Willow Country School, Leola and Frederick, graduating in 1969. He graduated from Northern State University with a mathematics degree and a deep faith in God. He attended Bethel Seminary in Minnesota for one year and became the youth pastor at First Baptist Church in Coon Rapids. At the same time to pay the bills, he also worked at Dain Bosworth Investments as an auditor.

Bruce’s passion was cattle, so even during the city years he was an AI technician, and spent a portion of each summer horseback in South Dakota, rounding up, sorting and breeding cows. In 1980, he gave up regular working hours and returned to South Dakota to ranch, initially working for Cutler Ranch near Frederick and later starting his own herd. Bruce met Lynette Gates Wheelihan on a cattle drive in 1980. They were married in 1982 and started ranching together. He had a passion for raising quality cattle, cattle handling and grassland management. They were recognized by the Red Angus Association of America with seven Grid Master Awards for exceptional carcass quality of their steers, 2009 Commercial Producer of the Year, BIF 2011 Commercial Roll of Excellence, and Angus America 2005 Outstanding Cow/Calf producer.

Bruce served on boards with the First National Bank of Frederick, Osceola Township and Frederick Farmer’s Elevator, and volunteered with the Frederick Ambulance. In 2012, Bruce and Lynette semi-retired from ranching, selling the majority of their herd to Bieber Red Angus. They continued to custom graze cattle and spray weeds during the summer but spent the winters in Arizona. Retired life brought new activities and many new friends. Pickleball, motorcycle riding and enjoying sunshine became his focus. Bruce has always enjoyed sports, especially Twins baseball, NSU, SDSU and NDSU athletics and local high school teams. He played softball for many years in Frederick, and was on Solera Pickleball Leagues in Arizona. He brought those Pickleball skills north

and won Gold at South Dakota Senior Games. In his life, Bruce had his wife at his side, faithful dogs and good horses. He also had a lifetime of good friends, who continually supported him during his 11-month battle with pancreatic cancer. Bruce is survived by his wife, Lynette; siblings, Karen Daly of Columbia, South Dakota; Linda (Leroy) Krage of Aberdeen; Dennis (Susan) Durheim of Ellendale, North Dakota; Twyla (Dick) Young of Ellendale; Joel (Cay) Durheim of Elm Lake; Brent (Lisa) Durheim of Hopedale, Illinois; mother-in-law, Jenny Gates of Minot, North Dakota; in-laws, Don (Bonnie) Gates of Fargo, North Dakota; Ann (Terry) Zeltinger of Minot, North Dakota; James (Susan) Gates of Mohall, North Dakota; and Jerry (Tamie) Gates of Bismarck, North Dakota; and numerous nieces and nephews and their children.

Keeping Ag Real – Brandi Buzzard Frobose by Kindra Gordon “My goal is to always be a resource for anyone who wants to learn more about their food,” said Brandi Buzzard Frobose, as she speaks of her multi-faceted efforts to share the agriculture story with a broader audience. Over the past decade, her career efforts have included working with producers and the public through roles with the Beef Cattle Institute/K-State Research & Extension and then the National Cattlemen’s Beef Association as associate director of issues communications. At NCBA, Frobose helped promote the image of beef producers and helped create strategy to react to beef industry issues and crises. Additionally, she managed the checkofffunded Masters of Beef Advocacy Program, which provides beef producers knowledge and skills to be-

come spokespeople for the beef industry. In 2017, Frobose joined the Red Angus Association of America to lead its communication efforts. Meanwhile, Frobose and her husband are raising their young family on their ranch. Since 2009, Frobose has also been chronicling her ag life experiences via her Buzzard’s Beat blog and other social media outlets. Her blog has evolved to include Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and Pinterest. While her blogging has earned quite a following over the past decade, it was a post on Feb. 8, 2019, titled, “An open letter to Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez from a Kansas rancher” that put Frobose in the national spotlight. Frobose tells that she was frustrated by Ocasio-Cortez’s proposed Green New Deal, which included language about “farting cows” as a contributor to climate change. Thus, Frobose took to her keyboard and wrote a letter to the congresswoman to shed light on several beef industry facts she felt were misrepresented. Frobose even invited Ocasio-Cortez to visit their Kansas ranch. Frobose said the goal of her letter was for the congresswoman “to feel comfortable reaching out to learn more about cattle.” Before sending the letter out, Frobose slept on it for one night, then emailed the letter to the congresswoman, had a hard copy hand-delivered to Ocasio-Cortez’s office and posted it to her blog and social media pages. While Frobose never heard from the congresswoman, she did have enough views on Facebook to crash her site (the letter has had about 270,000 views to date). About a week later, Frobose also received an email from Vaughn Hillyard, a reporter with MSNBC News. He and a small

54 American Red Angus Magazine ■ December 2019

TV crew came to the ranch for an interview with Frobose who had the opportunity to share about agriculture’s efficiency and sustainability efforts, and most important, clarify on national TV that “cows don’t fart, they belch.” A month later, FOX News also called and interviewed Frobose via Skype, and in April her efforts earned her an invitation to the White House along with other cattle producers to speak about sustainability in the Roosevelt Room. While she did not have the opportunity to meet President Trump, Frobose was thankful for the opportunities to join cattle producers in speaking for their industry. She said, “I’m hopeful at least one person who was skeptical has learned a little bit about cattle and is more comfortable with the way we are raising cattle.” Frobose does believe the efforts to share stories online about agriculture by ag advocates are making a difference in teaching the public about the industry, but she added, “If agriculture would stop arguing among its own circles, we’d move the needle more … and more energy and time could be put towards promoting all of agriculture.” She addressed this topic in a recent blog post titled, “When big ag and hobby farms fight, PETA wins.” Her hope for the future: “We could make more of a difference if we [agriculture] worked together better.” ■
