Board Commentary by Kay Klompien, Area 2 Montana Director

Reflections on Innovation Sitting on my knees, peering over the dash, steering wheel in hand and the pickup in four-low, first gear, Dad said, “If anything goes wrong, just turn the key off.” In 1970, I was 5 years old and Dad’s sidekick in feeding and calving. I was a sponge to his wisdom. It’s a good thing child labor laws weren’t applicable. I drove that pickup every day during calving for 25 cents. Dad would load the pickup with small square bales, and we would feed, check calving cows and herd health, then tag and weigh the new calves. Dad was meticulous and progressive – he had a hand scale and a cinch for taking weights. Occasionally, things got a little hairy when he would rope a calf, pull it up on the bed of the pickup to process it, and one of those black baldy mamas would jump up in there with him. After our hearts stopped racing, we would go back for another load of hay for the next group. I recall Dad commenting that next year he would switch up the bulls. The heavier birthweight bull was siring small calves and should be used on the heifers, while the lighter birthweight bull was causing extra labor, stress on the cattle and C-sections. The only antibiotic we had was penicillin for lump jaw, laceration and “Ain’t Doin’ Right.” The only diseases I remember vaccinating for were Red Water and Black Leg. We had plenty of scours and tried every possible treatment from raw eggs to some little white pills. Mom would often haul the babies to the vet on her way to work in the trunk of her car. We provided our cattle with all the salt they would consume, but nobody had heard of a mineral program.

A local Black Angus breeder would contact us if he got an outcast red heifer. I 6 Red Angus Magazine ■ November 2020

would love on that beautiful baby all the way home in the cab of our pickup. If we ever needed to haul larger livestock, we would attach the stock racks to the bed of our pickup or trail them for up to three days on larger groups. Our horses were fit and qualified. Moving forward 50 years, I ride the fourwheeler, open gates, cut net wrap and check health, while my husband Dave pulls the bale processor behind the tractor with a heated cab. Although I do have hand-warmers, here is definitely something wrong with this picture. I’m looking forward to the new side-by-side! Yes, Dave weighs, tags and vaccinates the calves. We have a digital scale that cradles the calf attached to the hitch of the fourwheeler, and with Red Angus genetics, things don’t get nearly as hectic as they did 50 years ago. EPDs and collaborated data have been a game-changer. Less calving stress most definitely helps cows breed back and also benefits our disposition. We now have a plethora of antibiotics to choose from, and we vaccinate for a multitude of diseases. We have to be careful not to exceed the gram negatives. Thankfully, technology has provided us with mineral options, scour prevention and advanced veterinary services to improve the overall health of our livestock. Crew cabs, stock trailers, four-wheelers and side-by-sides are often faster and more efficient, but the outside of a fourwheeler doesn’t do much for the inside of a man or woman, so we still use our horses as often as possible. I am blessed to have my husband and family by my side, but I sure wish Dad – who passed in 1994 – could see the progress we have made over the last 50 years with the herd he started. ■

10 Red Angus Magazine ■ November 2020

Association Commentary by Tom Brink, RAAA Chief Executive Officer

Red Angus Completes 2021-2026 Strategic Plan The Red Angus Association of American recently completed a new five-year Strategic Plan. This new plan will guide our efforts in advancing the breed from 2021to 2026. It is very well done and the product of a lot of thought, time and hard work by the Strategic Planning committee, the board of directors, staff members and Dr. Tom Field from the University of Nebraska, who served as our facilitator. We want to say a big THANK YOU everyone involved for their dedication to this process, which ended up taking longer than expected due to the pandemic and our inability to meet face-to-face. Red Angus Core Policy #2 states, “RAAA supports the development of membership-driven strategic planning.” Members were directly involved in the creation of the 20212026 plan in a couple of important ways. First, members and commercial customers responded to a large survey in the fall of 2019. The Strategic Planning committee reviewed survey answers which were especially impactful toward the creation of Critical Objective 1. Secondly, the Strategic Planning committee itself is larger than all other RAAA committees, allowing for the inclusion of broad-based input from 20 committee members and participants. No rocks were left unturned as committee discussions ranged broadly across all segments of the beef industry from seedstock to consumer and everything in between.

Following is a summarized version of the plan’s four critical objectives along with brief supporting information for each: Critical Objective #1: Create Market Demand. Pull-through demand will be increased at all market levels with the goal that Red Angus reaches a 20% beef breed market share by the end of the decade (Red Angus currently has a 9-10% share). Furthermore, we will work to position Red Angus and Red Angus-influenced cattle as the genetic solution for sustainable and profitable cattle in all beef industry segments, with continued emphasis on growing the value proposition of Red Angus females. Critical Objective #2: Quantify and Communicate the Red Angus Advantage in Stakeholder Profitability and Sustainability. Two key outcomes of this objective will be to expand the position of the Red Angus cow as the industry’s most-favored female, and to establish Red Angus genetics as the common denominator in every profitable crossbreeding system. Critical Objective #3: Attract, Develop and Retain Talent. This objective underscores that PEOPLE at all levels of the Association and breed make things happen. We intend that RAAA be served by the most professional and informed leaders who are stewards of the long-term success of the RAAA as a business, its members and customers.

Your Success Our Passion. is a registered trademark of Select Sires Inc.

ÂŽ

Association Commentary Exceptional training, mentoring and development programs will be established, building a pipeline of engaged leaders that is complemented by an innovative, bestpractice governance structure. Critical Objective #4: Create and Improve Genetic Prediction Tools. Seeking to enable Red Angus breeders to better leverage genetic predictions for faster genetic progress, this objective focuses on both the enhancement of current EPDs and indexes, as well as the construction of new tools where appropriate. There will be an emphasis on feed efficiency as well as females, and on tapping new data sources from within the commercial cattle industry.

Read the 2021-2026 Red Angus Strategic Plan and watch a brief video rollout and discussion at redangus.org/strategic-plan-20212026. Gaining market share and earning more of the industry’s commercial bull and female market requires a comprehensive effort by all of our members and employees. We need a roadmap to follow and that’s exactly what the Strategic Plan provides. The future of Red Angus is bright. As we execute toward the plan’s critical objectives, the prosperity of all Red Angus stakeholders will grow right along with the breed’s market share. ■

Marketing Update

by Nolan Woodruff, Commercial Marketing Specialist

There’s Still Time to Maximize Profits As we begin to kick off feeder calf sales in sale barns throughout the nation, we expect to see a continued high demand for Red Angus and Red Angus-influenced calves. So far, the commercial marketing team is aware of 38 FCCP sales that are going to happen this fall and winter, and we want to remind you that, as long as your calves are still on the ranch of origin, it’s not too late to enroll them in one of the Association’s added-value programs. This allows buyers to better identify quality cattle as they come through the ring. When combining the use of our programs and taking advantage of selling at one of the Red Angus Feeder Calf sales, you gain access to buyers who are there to bid on loads and/or lots of Red Angus cattle. Enrolling your cattle in any of the Red Angus addedvalue programs is easy and requires a quick phone call to the Tag Programs Department, 940-387-3502, Ext. 2, for an over-the-phone enrollment. For the FCCP or the Allied Access program, there is no herd enrollment fee and cost is only 99 cents per head for the panel tag or $2 per head for an EID tag. Using these programs allows you to maximize your profits because your calves are marketable when they qualify for programs at both the feedlot and the packing plant. In past studies, Red Angus-influenced cattle marketed while enrolled in the Red Angus FCCP garnered almost $3/cwt over Red Angus cattle that weren’t tagged.

To take advantage of marking your cattle in a special Red Angus Feeder Calf sale, visit redangus.org/marketing. 2020 Grid Master Award Winners The Grid Master Award, an honor bestowed by the RAAA, is earned by operations that have successfully combined superior Red Angus genetics, feeding management skills and precise marketing to achieve success with the harvest of superior beef carcasses. To be named a Grid Master, cattle must be Red Angus or Red Angus-influenced that are enrolled in the RAAA’s FCCP or Allied Access tag program, and must achieve a specified level of carcass excellence. The program is open to both conventionally and naturally fed cattle. This year, 18 producers submitted a total of 33 loads of cattle representing 2,356 head of Red Angus-influenced calved qualified for Grid Master. This year’s winners will receive a plaque and a belt buckle. ■

Member Services Bulletin Communication is Fundamental by Halla Pfeiff, Director of Office Operations

You may be a new member of RAAA and have been building daily questions or you may be a seasoned veteran member. Either way, communication with the Association is a fundamental necessity. The communication that occurs might come with a simple address or phone number update, a question regarding a statement, a question-and-answer session with our value-added tags department or the more complex conversation revolving around registrations and transfer of animals. We view this as a two-way street that is encouraged and valued. The RAAA relies heavily on email as we are not able to accept data requests and submissions over the phone. If you know data has been submitted, we ask that you check your email and voicemail regularly in case RAAA staff needs more information to complete the job. All members of the RAAA team are here to help and advise. Please don’t ever hesitate to pick up the phone or send over an email. THR Deadlines Fall Cow Inactivations happened in late October. What does this mean? Any fall calving cow that did not have a calf reported or a reason as to why a calf was not reported for the fall 2019 calf crop was inactivated and removed from active inventory on October 28. The list of inactive cows is available under the My Reports section in REDSPro. If you need to place her back on active inventory, either a calf or reason code will need to be reported for the 2019 year and a fee will apply. Spring Heifer Exposure is due in November and was requested in August. The data we need submitted is the date the bull(s) were turned in and pulled out, along with the list of which heifers were exposed to the bull(s). You should also dispose of any heifers that were not kept as replacements at this time to remove them from inventory.

Taking Aim at a Moving Target

$

by Kacey Jacobson, Top Dollar Angus, Field Representative

®

If your ranch household is anything like ours, the conversation topic of cattle always seems to make the forefront of any discussion we have on a daily basis. If we aren’t talking about the next task on the ranch’s to-do list, we are usually discussing potential changes in our feeding program, pasture management, marketing plan and so on. With all this discussion, it is easy to feel like we as producers are trying to hit a moving target. At certain times, the bullseye appears fairly clear and our odds of hitting it dead center – or at least getting close – are much more favorable than other instances. With a cattle market that changes daily, evolving marketing programs, and of course the weather, cattle producers face variables that are both in and out of their control.

Taking Aim at a Moving Target As new marketing programs and search studies come out, it can be difficult to know what to do at any given time. Questions such as, “Should we wean calves or sell off the cow this year?” or “Should we do Natural programming or place an implant in the calves for extra pounds?” The answers to these questions are never as cut and dry as we would like them and can be quite variable between different operations. The answers also change with markets. For instance, in 2019, NHTC cattle were demanding much stronger premiums than we have seen in 2020, while Natural feeder cattle have remained strong for both 2019 and 2020 markets. In contrast, two targets that always seem to be steadily placed in front of us are genetic superiority and health. Year after year, genetics can be improved and will always be moving to-

wards a similar direction. The healthier, more efficient, higher quality cattle will always be more valuable. Unfortunately, genetic progress can be the slowest type of improvement to achieve compared to other production practices that can easily vary year to year such as Natural, Age and Source, etc. A healthy set of calves with a strong vaccination protocol behind them will always be more valuable than an unhealthy set of calves regardless of other programming. However, with a proper health program in place, the goal to increase the value of your calf crop has become much more achievable. Never forget what buyers want and need in the feeder calves they bid on and buy: health, plus growth and grade potential. As you take aim on next year’s targets

Elite Genetiics require Elite e Nutrition Advancements in gene etics have far outpaced traditional feeding strategies. a AminoGain® is the most advanced fee eding technology available toda t y.

for production practices and marketing strategies, consider if your herd is hitting your genetic targets. By achieving necessary genetic improvement goals, you can increase your options for entering value-added marketing programs while improving the overall quality of your herd. Proper emphasis on health and genetic improvement can place your herd in a position to advance and adapt in a changing market with more confidence, placing you closer to that moving target. ■

A Tool to Improve All Aspects of the Beef Supply Chain by Ryan Boldt, Director of Breed Improvement

In the fall of 2019, the RAAA conducted a survey of members and commercial cattlemen. One of the biggest take-aways from this survey was the finding that a majority of those surveyed used Red Angus to improve both terminal and maternal traits in their herd. While there are genetic predictions for these traits, it is often difficult to look across an EPD profile and determine which animal will be the most profitable choice. This is where economic selection indexes are very helpful. These indexes economically weight the EPDs for each animal and helps identify what combination of EPDs will be the most profitable. When we think about indexes, there are generally several types that are typically available. It can be strongly argued that the most useful of these indexes are those that weigh and combine traits that are economically important across all phases of beef production. ProS index Previously, this overall index for Red Angus seedstock was called HerdBuilder. The previous index was very maternally focused but did provide for some selection pressure for traits that occur in the feedlot and on the rail. With the updated indexes, a new and improved index will be introduced that will cover traits from conception to harvest. This index will be called “Profitability and Sustainability” and will be abbreviated as ProS. The ProS index is a combination of the goals of the updated HerdBuilder and Gridmaster indexes. In the past two month’s issues of the Red Angus Magazine, I provided a more in-depth look at these two indexes. The traits included in the ProS index are: Calving Ease Direct, Calving Ease Maternal, Weaning Weight, Milk, Mature Weight, Heifer Pregnancy, Stayability, Average Daily Gain,

38 Red Angus Magazine n November 2020

Carcass Weight, Dry Matter Intake, Marbling, Back Fat and Rib Eye Area. Each trait in the model is weighted based on the effect that particular trait has in terms of increasing profitability. Using the 500 most-used sires over the last five years, the pie chart provides an illustration of the general weighting of traits within the ProS index. Response to Selection Another method to evaluate the updated indexes is a Response to Selection graph. The graph on page 56 provides the expected result and direction of EPD change that would occur if multi-generation selection was carried out based solely on the indexes. The resulting change would be shown after one standard deviation of improvement in the indexes was achieved. In the graph, the blue bars represent the ProS index, the orange bars represent the HerdBuilder index, and the gray bars represent the GridMaster index. The results for these indexes were included on the same chart to better identify the selection pressure that each of the indexes are placing on different traits. n

Pioneering Heifer Development: Best Decisions with Dr. Patsy Houghton Heartland Cattle Co. manages heifers for their customers, providing detailed nutritional and reproductive management so that ranchers can focus more of their time on mature cow producing units.

We in the beef business tend to think of deep space and the deep sea as the great unknown because the general consensus is that there isn’t much in the beef industry we haven’t explored. However, that wasn’t the case just a few short decades ago. For example, by the late 1980s, professional heifer development hadn’t yet been attempted by anyone in the beef industry, yet the foundation was being laid, unknowingly, by Kansas State University research and Extension. The department was researching estrous sync by pairing Extension specialists with student interns to conduct AI and estrous sync protocols on commercial cattle operations. One of those Extension specialists happened to be Dr. Patsy Houghton and it was from one of these beef cattle Extension research projects that she got the idea for the first-ever professional heifer development yard, Heartland Cattle Co. Houghton earned her B.S. and M.S. at Kansas State University in animal sciences and industry and then spent two years on faculty at Cal-State University-Fresno. She also spent two years at the American Simmental Association as the youth and education manager before returning to graduate

by Brandi Buzzard Frobose, Director of Communications

school at Purdue University to earn her Ph.D. While at Purdue, Houghton pursued a self-proclaimed “heterosis of education” by researching the interaction between reproduction and nutrition. Her program focused on pre- and-post-partum nutrition and its effects on fertility. Not surprisingly, Houghton attests that crossing disciplines while at Purdue was a key factor in her success today. In fact, her impactful research led to some of the equations that changed the beef cattle requirements for energy from the National Research Council. “I didn’t want to be pigeonholed as just a nutritionist or just a reproductive physiologist. I knew I wanted to spend some time in academia but not my whole career, so I set myself up for a production career in industry and I purposely crossed those disciplines. Ultimately, the nutrition and reproduction interaction project at Purdue set me up perfectly for Heartland.” Houghton’s work at Purdue, and subsequently at Kansas State, laid the foundation for professional heifer development – it wouldn’t be wrong to call her a pioneer woman in that respect. Once the idea for

48 American Red Angus Magazine n November 2020

Heartland Cattle Co. emerged, she pursued bringing it to reality at full throttle. “My wheels started turning and I thought to myself, ‘What could be possible if a person had a professional crew, complete control of the nutritional development program and a facility designed to breed large numbers of heifers?’ We could complete the full equation on the female side,” said Houghton on how Heartland Cattle Co. came to fruition. Alongside two partners, a mere $15,000, a trusting bank and a whole lot of grit, Heartland Cattle Co. broke ground in 1990 in McCook, Nebraska, in the middle of a cornstubble field. The premise of the company was that Houghton and her team could manage heifers for their customers by providing detailed nutritional and reproductive management so that ranchers could focus more of their time on mature cow producing units. "Heifers represent the future of every cowherd but they tend to be time-consuming and problematic to manage.

Pioneering Heifer Development: Best Decisions with Dr. Patsy Houghton A rancher is managing grass and needs to get as much off that grass as possible. So, even though a heifer is the future, she doesn’t produce any saleable product for 2.5 years. By removing that set of heifers, a rancher can replace them with comparable numbers of mature cow units and increase cash flow. We found with our customers, that in most years, they had enough cash flow from the increased number of mature cow units on their grass that they could totally pay for our heifer development program while simultaneously getting rid of their heifer headache.” The return on investment didn’t stop once the heifers returned to their ranch of origin. Houghton and her team took an all-encompassing approach that went beyond development and guaranteed that all the pieces were in place for heifers to join the herd and not miss a step in the coming years. “We wanted to step up their program in terms of correct nutritional development, get more heifers bred for them and make sure to get them bred ahead of mature cows so they had more time to rebreed in the following years,” said Houghton.

If fact, one of the biggest advantages Heartland Cattle Co. gave their customers was to increase their heifer retention rate to second- and third-calving cows by 8%. “The biggest profit factor we could provide for a rancher was to ensure that those young cows stayed in the herd.” If it sounds like Houghton is a problem solver, that’s because she recognizes that every business model is focused on solving someone else’s problems. Houghton attests that focusing on the details and helping your customers is a wise decision that leads to forever customers. It’s that mindset of customer service that led to a 95% customer retention rate at Heartland Cattle Co. In the fall of 2018, Houghton sold Heartland Cattle Co. after 32 years in large-scale heifer development. Her future plans are to pursue educational-based business opportunities and teach others the principles of owning and managing their own businesses. An educator by nature, Houghton offers a whole host of advice to young

Dr. Patsy Houghton

people in the beef industry itching to find their own success. “Grow and expand as you can but remember that expansion costs money. Additionally, pay attention to the market and if you can buy low and sell high, do it. Set goals before you invest and have timelines for achieving those goals. Also, it’s really important to understand your own strengths, weaknesses and personality, and line those factors up with your goals.” It’s unlikely for Houghton to tout her career as groundbreaking – she is the definition of modest – but make no mistake; the decisions she made have dramatically increased both the profitability and quality of heifer development across the beef industry. n

Heartland Cattle Co. began with two partners, $15,000, a trusting bank and a whole lot of grit in the middle of a corn-stubble field near McCook, Nebraska.

JRA Update by Andrea Rutledge, JRA President

Engage with JRA

2020-2021 Board

Falling for Red Angus If you are anything like me, you can’t believe fall is already in full swing! Our members are busy with shows, bull sales and shipping calves. The JRA Board had an exciting month of October. We were able to meet for the first time as a newly elected board – we attended the Red Western Classic in Reno, Nevada, and the American Royal in Kansas City, Missouri. After the crazy year we had, we were so excited to finally see Junior Red Angus members. With this cooler weather, our board is gearing up for many things. Here are a few of our favorite fall things. “My favorite part of fall is the time I get to spend with my siblings and mom going out to check cows and calves.” – Izzy McGibbon, JRA Board Vice President “My favorite part of fall is fall calving. The majority of our cattle calve in the fall and I always love seeing the product of different sire and dam combinations. We AI a lot of our cattle because our herd is small, so we normally have a lot of variation. It’s fun to see the actual calf on the ground and to imagine what their future will hold.” – Tiffany Watkins, JRA Board Secretary “Weaning calves is one of my favorite fall activities. I enjoy seeing all the progeny from the year and evaluating them to make management decisions.” – Mia Gibson, JRA Board Member “I like fall because it is a fresh start. Fall is the time that new females are 52 Red Angus Magazine ■ November 2020

purchased, or calves are weaned, but no matter what, it is a new start with new animals.” – Peyton Nagel, JRA Board Member “I like fall because I get to look at all of the cattle sales.” – Isaac Berg, JRA Board Member For me, what I enjoy most about the fall, is bringing cattle off of summer pasture. It is always so exciting to see the calves as they grow and mature. I love to see which genetics are effectively producing and which genetics we may need to reevaluate. If you have questions, feel free to reach out to any of the board members. We want to see what our members are up to this fall, so if you post on social media, tag us!

Dennis T. Halfmann Dennis T. Halfmann (84) of Olfen, Texas, passed away peacefully at home on Sept. 5, 2020. Dennis was born Feb. 25, 1936, to Otto T. and Amelia (Lange) Halfmann of Olfen, Texas. He was a lifelong resident of Olfen where he attended Olfen ISD and graduated from St. Joseph High School in Rowena, Texas. Upon graduation, he served in the Army National Guard, 142nd Regiment, 36th Infantry. Dennis loved the land and was passionate about farming and ranching. He loved to ride his horse, hunt and fish. He and his brother, Clifford, were early innovators in establishing one of the first registered Red Angus herds in West Texas and became active in the Texas Red Angus Association and Red Angus Association of America. Dennis served as an officer and director of the TRAA. Halfmann Red Angus supplied seedstock and bulls to

Dennis was a simple, quiet man with a big heart and always a chuckle. With the death of his dad, he, as a young man, assisted his mother in raising his younger brother and two nieces including driving them to many of their school events and dances. Throughout the years, his care for his widowed mother exemplified his love and compassion. Never having children of his own, he took special interest in all his nieces and nephews. Devoted to his beloved church, Saint Boniface, Dennis was involved in church activities, including church choir, fall festivals and Knights of Columbus (4th degree). Survivors include his brothers, Clifford Halfmann and Glen Halfmann (Diane),

season and was awarded team MVP honors. He spent four seasons with the Saints, playing in 56 games (54 starts) from 1967-1970. Tilleman was inducted into the Saints Hall of Fame and the Montana Football Hall of Fame. The 6-foot-7, 275-pound defensive tackle played 11 years in the NFL, suiting up for four teams. In his four years in New Orleans, Tilleman recorded four fumble recoveries and was an anchor for the defensive line. "He didn't look as strong as he was," teammate Brian Schweda said. "Mike would just be able to toss people around like a rag doll. He was tough in the middle." Tilleman was known for being a force on the defensive line. Tilleman's trademark head slap was so fierce, one opposing offensive lineman once said he'd rather catch flying javelins than be on the receiving end of the behemoth's legendary force.

"Coach knew I was one of those people who could not be intimidated," Tilleman said. "He liked my toughness." Mike Tilleman was born on March 30, 1944, in Chinook, Montana, and was raised on a ranch outside of Zurich, Montana. He played at Chinook High, where he was a prep All-American. Tilleman played for the Montana Grizzlies in the 1960s and was a second team All-Big Sky Conference selection in both seasons he played. He left school early to enter the NFL Draft. He was selected with the 163rd pick by the Minnesota Vikings in 1965. In addition to the Saints and Vikings, Tilleman played for the Houston Oilers and Atlanta Falcons. "He was a character and a half," Schweda said. "He loved having a good time and was jolly to be around. Mike wasn't hard to get along with at all." Tilleman was admired in Montana and was very involved in the community.

He has been credited with restoring MSU-Northern football in 1999 after a 27-year absence. His annual Legends for the Lights celebrity pheasant hunt and two other fundraisers have brought in more than $2 million for the Northern Lights Athletics Scholarship Foundation. "We're not here without him," MSUNorthern coach Andrew Rolin told 406mtsports.com. "I've got a lot of gratitude for what he's done ... He was an icon not just in Havre but the entire HiLine. There's no Northern football without the Tillemans, and without Mike Tilleman specifically. He had a huge impact on a lot of lives in this area." After his playing career, Tilleman moved back to Montana. He ran Tilleman Motor Co. and owned I Like It Like That Red Angus Ranch. Tilleman is survived by his wife Gloria, along with children Suzanne, Christopher and Craig. ■
