RED ANGUS Magazine n April 2021

Board Commentary by Jim Yance, Area 8 – Southeast Director

Reproductive Health Produces Profitability Greetings from southeast Alabama! As I write this we have experienced several days of rain which fell on already wet ground. Here on our operation, calving season is just about over. I am always excited to see the new crop hit the ground and as the years go by, I am equally excited to know the last calf has hit the ground! This leads us into our topic for today – reproduction. We have all read or heard that reproduction and fertility is the most important profit driver for a cow-calf operation. It’s also the first thing that is impacted negatively when things get challenging for the cow. We can do a lot of different things that will help with total reproduction in the cow herd. Start with a good mineral and nutrition program, understanding that all minerals are not created equal. Use a mineral that fits your part of the country, keep it available year-round, possibly changing to seasonal formulas to match calving and breeding season and/or the forages available. Be diligent in parasite control; both internal and external. It has been said the two best times to deworm cattle were the hottest day of the year and the coldest day of the year. Vaccinate and booster replacement heifers prior to breeding and booster cows annually (45 days before bull turn out or before an AI project is to be implemented). It’s easier to manage the cow herd’s nutritional needs if they are all on the same schedule. The best way to do this is by having a short breeding sea-

son, which makes for a short calving season. Selecting for fertility is key; select heifers that breed early in the first or second cycle. This will pay off big as they grow and move into the mature cow herd. Implementing an AI program is another way to ensure you get more heifers and cows bred in the first 45 days of the breeding season. Through advancements in technology and the synchronization protocols available, artificial insemination has become a great tool to advance not only genetics within a herd, but overall profitably. If you are like most operations, you probably sell by the pound, if you have more calves born early in the calving season you will have more weight to sell at weaning time. From the first calf born to the last calf born, you could be well over 100 pounds difference! Staying on top of reproduction efficiencies can be challenging at times, as we all busily juggle other things. Making a calendar for the year is a big help! Once a program is in place, it becomes second nature. If you are experiencing low pregnancy rates, there is something going on within your herd. Reach out to someone for help. A good place to start is with your veterinarian, nutritionist or your local Extension beef specialist. If you are interested in advancements in beef cattle reproduction, I like to reference the University of Missouri reproduction website www.mizzourepro.com as a personal favorite resource. Best wishes for a successful spring! n

Red Angus Heifers Display Superior Fertility Heifer development is a balancing act. From the time a set of replacement candidates are weaned until their first exposure, they must be kept healthy and grown-out appropriately, such that a high percentage are cycling and ready to breed at 14-15 months of age.

in yearling weights is fairly large at 224 pounds (722 versus 946 pounds). It should also be noted that 96% of these gain differences are non-genetic. When sorted and grouped in this manner, management and nutrition explains almost all of why the groups gained at different rates.

At the same time, no producer wants to waste feed. There is a point at which too fast of a growth rate becomes expensive and potentially detrimental to their productivity and longevity. Weaning-to-yearling growth rates near 1.5 pounds per day are often considered adequate. However, no specific rate of gain is right for every situation.

Following these heifer groups through parity reveals no difference in age at first calving. All four groups calved at slightly over two years of age, which is right on schedule, because many replacement heifers are selected, in part, because they are born early in the calving season. The lowest gaining group showed no disadvantage, despite significantly lighter yearling weights. Nor did the fastest gaining quartile exhibit any advantage in age when calved for the first time. Data is unavailable as to how these heifers were managed from yearling to breeding. It is possible that heifers gaining less from weaning to yearling were placed on a higher nutritional plane from 12 months of age to first exposure.

The RAAA database offers interesting insight into this subject. When grouped by post-weaning gain, one readily observable theme is that Red Angus heifers are champions when tasked with getting bred in time to calve at two years of age. And that statement holds up across a wide range of gain rates. As shown in the table, 1A and 1B females were split into quartiles from lowest to highest phenotypic gain. There is a sizable spread in gain rates from the lowest quartile (0.85 pounds per day) to the highest quartile (2.27 pounds), and the resulting difference

That said, we can still conclude that heifers gaining toward the upper end of range probably did not need to be fed quite as aggressively. Built-in Red Angus fertility is doing its job

Association Commentary – Red Angus Heifers Display Superior Fertility well, even with gain rates below 1.75 pounds per day. Note that average weaning weights for all four groups ranged from 574 to 586 pounds, which is relatively heavy, and something of an enabling factor, allowing slower gains from weaning to yearling, while still achieving desirable yearling weights. The question might be asked as to whether the percentage of heifers actually calving was the same for all four groups. We know their average age at first calving was not different, but did a smaller percentage in the low-gaining group actually get bred and calve? The lowest ADG group did experience a small, 2-percentage-point reduction in heifers calving compared to the other three groups. This may suggest that the lowest ADG quartile heifers were being challenged to breed in a lower-input environment, and were, therefore, being tested with the intention of

Red Angus heifers are champions at breeding in time to calve at two years of age. weeding out any heifers unable to conceive without more feed. Again, the difference in calving rates is only slightly lower in the bottom-gaining group, and for the other three quartiles, calving rates were virtually the same. Marketing Update by Rachael Oliver, RAAA Commercial Marketing Specialist

How to Stay the Industry’s Most Favored Female? In my family, we always say spring is cowboy season, at least it is for us. Calving is in full swing and branding season is fast approaching. Even with all the busyness ranchers are facing this time of year, there is one element that cannot go unnoticed. This is a time for cattlemen and women to evaluate their cow herd – calves may still be hitting the ground, but are those females performing to your expectations? Are you putting more work into assisting those cows when they are calving? These are just a couple of questions that come to mind and now is the time to look at your herd to determine, “Do I have the industry’s most favored females?”

in the Red Navigator test are Red Angus’ HerdBuilder, GridMaster and ProS indices, all EPD traits and parent verification, given the potential sires have been tested with the RA50K test.

In 2018, based on findings from Superior Livestock data analyzed by Kansas State University and sponsored by Merck Animal Health, the industry quickly discovered Red Angus females are the industry’s most favored. They found Red Angus females bring up to $11/cwt more than other breeds and since 2018, these females have commanded the market, gaining more profit than all other females. Their fertility, durability in different environments and calm disposition make it easy for cattlemen and women to create an ideal cow herd.

Recently while I was listening to a webinar about the use of genomics in the beef industry, there was a continued theme across the board from all the speakers. They continued to mention that even with all the genomic tests they use, the best thing a producer can do is focus on foot and leg scoring. On the RAAA website, there is a valuable resource that shows the guidelines of what to look for in proper foot and leg structure.

Fast forward to today, producers may know Red Angus females are the industry’s favorite but what is the next step to success? How do cattlemen and women continue the success and sustainability of their cow herd? There are many factors that play roles in making the best better, but as an association it is our mission to provide a tool box of opportunities to benefit producers. One useful tool for commercial cattlemen is Red Navigator, which is a DNA test focused for use on commercial females that are 75% Red Angus or greater. Traits included

Using Red Navigator allows producers to see their females ranked in individual percentiles when compared to the entire cow herd, as well as other Red Angus-genotyped animals. By incorporating this tool into your operation, it allows you as the producer to home in on specific traits that shine light on building your herd to become more efficient and profitable.

At times this resource goes unnoticed, but it is there and ready to be used for your benefit. Without focusing on these traits, the sustainability of a cow herd could be impacted drastically. It’s a simple practice to implement but at times it seems we lose focus on feet and legs when looking for other traits to make our cattle more profitable. If we want to continue the success of Red Angus females being the most favored in the industry, we as producers need to combine a focus of phenotypic traits such as foot and leg structure, with the use of genomic testing like Red Navigator, to ensure that Red Angus females will continue to remain the market’s top female. n

Calf Registration Requirements of Sires In the RAAA rules and regulations, Section H - DNA states that all sires, regardless of the mating of the calf, must have DNA on file with a parentage test. To view the rule in full, see the Breeder’s Guide page 34 - 35 found at RedAngus. org > Herd Management. This requirement began with the 2017 calf crop. We recommend that any bull on the premises have a DNA sample on file. Doing so helps eliminate any potential difficulty down the road with registration checks and balances or sire determination.

Genetic Improvement of Longevity by Ryan Boldt, Director of Breed Improvement

In terms of genetic improvement, some of the most challenging traits to make rapid genetic progress are fertility and longevity. There are several pre-disposing factors that make these traits difficult to improve including heritability of the traits, average age when phenotypes are collected and the sex-limited nature of the phenotypes. The range of heritability for a trait like Stayability is low. Heritability predictions have generally been estimated to be 0.20 or less, based on different populations and definitions of the trait. This adds challenges when selecting for these traits, because a majority of the performance differences that are experienced on the phenotypic level are driven by environment. Another important factor to consider is that data for these traits can only be collected on females that are retained in the herd. An average rate of female retention is 20% of total females produced or approximately 10% of the total calf crop, assuming a 50/50 split of males and females. In addition to this, females are older when necessary phenotypes are collected so the ability to generate large amounts of data on young animals is more limited. While each of the above factors presents challenges for making genetic progress in these traits, by using EPDs for selection decisions, genetic progress can still be made. Over time, copious amounts of work have gone into making the genetic evaluations of these difficult traits as

Daughters of sires that have higher STAY EPDs tend to remain in the herd longer and produce more calves. 26

RED ANGUS Magazine n April 2021

accurate as possible. Tremendous time has been invested in research and development, statistical model improvement and improvement in data collection protocols with the goal to enhance the accuracy of these EPD predictions. When the STAY EPD was first introduced, it was a single-trait model and females had to be six years of age before an observation was collected. In 2007, an improvement allowed for observations at younger ages to be included in the model. Since then, another advancement in modeling techniques known as random regression has been employed. Currently this is the model being used in RAAA genetic evaluation conducted through International Genetic Solutions. This approach offers several advantages in terms of including more of the available data, as well as directly incorporating genomic information into the EPD calculations. The question becomes, “Can we trust the information that we see on potential sires to improve the genetic merit of the herd?” To study this, a group of dams born from 1995 to 2011 were pulled from the RAAA database for analysis. These dams were then sorted into four groups based on the current STAY EPD of their sires. Within each of these groups the average number of single-born calves were calculated. The figure illustrates the average number of calves produced from dams in each of the different quartiles from high to low sire STAY EPDs. As illustrated, the EPD percentile becomes larger (less favorable STAY EPD) as we move across the different groups, and the average number of calves produced per female per lifetime decreases – as we would expect. This is good news that shows if we use sires that have higher STAY EPDs, on average, we would expect the daughters of these sires to remain in the herd longer and produce more calves. This type of analysis provides evidence that when we look across large numbers of animals, we do see the EPD system working as expected, and that selecting for more favorable values will, on average, give more positive results. n

Mitigating Pregnancy Loss

by Dr. George Perry and Jaclyn Ketchum for the Red Angus Magazine Picture the final day of breeding season when the last female walks out of the AI barn, the last embryo is transferred or bulls get pulled. Perhaps you are thinking that another breeding season is done and now there is nothing left to do but hope that on pregnancy-check day most will be pregnant. But did you know there are a few other things besides hope that you can do to maximize the number of calves that are born? Following a single insemination, fertilization rates can be as high as 95% but by day 30 only around 52% of females are pregnant. So why does fertilization occur but females do not remain pregnant? Dr. Sydney Reese, PhD graduate of Texas A&M, broke down pregnancy into periods of loss and stated, “Any loss that occurs between day 3-7 of pregnancy is classified as fertilization/pre-blastocyst failure. Loss that occurs between day 8-32 is considered early embryonic mortality and pregnancies that are lost from day 27-100 are classified as late embryonic mortality/early fetal loss.” There are different developmental steps that occur during these periods of pregnancy, that if interrupted and not completed properly, will result in the loss of a pregnancy. So, what can you do as a producer to mitigate some of these losses? During any period of pregnancy, but especially days 5-42, stress can be considered an “interrupter” that hinders the normal physiological

events of pregnancy and thus it is especially important that females remain under a low stress environment during gestation. However, low stress environments are not always realistic, especially in instances where females need to be shipped to different locations following the breeding season. When asked how to prevent the stress associated with shipping from negatively impacting pregnancies, Dr. George Perry, associate professor of animal science at Texas A&M, suggests that producers transport females within the first four days following insemination or wait until after day 45. “During the first four days, the embryo is in the oviduct and is less susceptible to stress than when in the uterus, thus making it the best time to ship females. However, after day four, embryos have migrated into the uterus and begin to undergo numerous developmental events that are crucial to continuing a healthy pregnancy. If these events occur under a stressful environment it increases the likelihood of pregnancy loss,” he explained. If for some reason females are not able to be transported within the first four days, the next best time for transportation to occur is 45 days or later after insemination. At this point of the pregnancy, the placenta is attached, and the fetus has developed some tolerance to stress. But Perry warned that producers could still see

6% of pregnancies being lost when transportation occurs after day 45. Another management option that producers should consider when thinking about how to mitigate pregnancy loss is changes in the environment. Heifers developed in a drylot, bred and then turned out to pasture undergo numerous challenges and changes that could negatively impact pregnancy maintenance. In this scenario alone there are changes associated with nutrition, physiology and location or pen size. “If you’ve ever watched a set of curious heifers get turned into a new pasture, then you know that they spend a good part of the first few days exploring their new environment,” Perry commented. “This observation was confirmed by pedometer data that said heifers developed in a drylot and then moved to pasture will take more steps from day 0-3 than heifers that were developed on pasture and then moved to a new pasture on day 0.” To go along with the wide-open spaces are the nutritional changes. Heifers are no longer being fed a rationed diet but are immediately being switched to an all-roughage diet. “The increased step count combined with a change in diet can lead to decreased ADG for 30 days when compared to heifers that have grazing experience. This period of undernourishment negatively impacts pregnancy establishment and maintenance,” he added.

Mitigating Pregnancy Loss In cases like these, where change has to occur, Perry suggested finding a way to make the change gradual. This may mean supplementing heifers for 30 days or adapting heifers to grazing prior to AI. Also limiting the pasture size with temporary fencing and then gradually expanding that area over time to limit the number of steps they take while exploring.

Managing the herd to maintain pregnancies will pay dividends to your operation. Certain areas of the country also deal with pregnancy loss associated with heat stress which, to some degree, can be mitigated by fans and shade. Heat stress makes estrus detection protocols more difficult due to fewer cows expressing estrus while experiencing hotter temperatures. “Fixed-time AI protocols can help producers improve pregnancy rates by eliminating the problems associated with heat detection during hotter temperatures, but a certain degree of loss can still occur after fertilization as embryos at this stage do not have

the ability to produce certain proteins that protect them from heat. Embryo transfer is an option as embryos being transferred during hot temperatures have already obtained the ability to produce proteins that can protect them from hotter temperatures and thus increase pregnancy rates beyond those obtained with FTAI,” Perry said. However, producers should expect to see a greater amount of loss from days 30-90 with pregnancies that result from ET than natural service or AI.

Pregnancy loss is something that producers must deal with but finding ways to mitigate loss will be economically beneficial. Thinking through managerial ways to maintain as many pregnancies as possible will pay dividends to your operation. In cases where transportation and changes are inevitable, the loss associated with those events can be mitigated by shipping at the appropriate time and making necessary changes as transitional and gradual as possible. JRA Mission The Junior Red Angus Association, the junior affiliate of the RAAA, strives to equip and prepare all members to be leaders, innovators, stewards and advocates for the Red Angus breed, the beef industry and agriculture. The JRA membership actively participates in industry events, conferences and workshops designed to develop members’ critical thinking, leadership and production skill sets. Additionally, the JRA strives to nurture enthusiasm for the beef industry and agriculture, while promoting networking and education. Junior Spotlight Thousand Hills Red Angus is a registered Red Angus seedstock operation, owned and operated by high schoolers Tate Welch and myself, Chastain Spiller. We began Tate Welch and Chastain Spiller this journey as a Supervised Agricultural Experience for FFA and we have continued it as a business and investment to benefit us in the future. Our intention with this business is to produce quality registered Red Angus cattle that can perform well at high altitudes in order to expand the gene pool available for high-altitude breeders and improve the breed as a whole. My favorite thing about the Red Angus breed is how versatile it can be. Our biggest involvement in JRA is that of being breeders ourselves. I have also been involved in the North American Junior Red Angus Event for several years where I have been able to learn more about the breed and be involved in promoting it. We are excited to be more involved in JRA itself and make connections with our fellow members. In the future, I plan to attend Texas A&M University to pursue a career in agricultural journalism and Tate plans to attend Trinidad State Junior College to study gunsmithing.

Safety First This Breeding Season Safe practices for transportation and storage of semen tanks By B. Lynn Gordon for the Red Angus Magazine What could be as crucial as your sire selection decisions this breeding season? The simple answer: focusing on mind-over-matter when handling and storing semen tanks. During the breeding season, the transportation of cryogenic containers/tanks (commonly referred to in the beef industry as “semen tanks”) or accessing straws from tanks in storage at your ranch can be a daily practice. Using mindover-matter, you can keep yourself and others safe this breeding season. Nitrogen – A Silent Killer Liquid nitrogen (LN2) is nitrogen in a liquid state. When nitrogen is converted to a liquid form, it becomes a liquefied gas which must be kept at extremely low temperatures. Liquid nitrogen will expand to produce 700 times the volume of gas when vaporized. This rapid and extreme expansion can lead to oxygen displacement. The oxygen level in fresh, outside air is 20.9%. Research conducted by the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health describes 19.5% oxygen as the onset of an oxygen-deficient environment. At oxygen levels lower than 19.5%, people immediately begin to feel the effects. The lower

the percent of oxygen in the air, the more tragic the outcome. Nitrogen has no warning properties. It is odorless, colorless, tasteless and non-irritating, reports the Office of Research, Environmental Safety and Health Department at Utah State University. Humans cannot detect nitrogen’s presence, thus increasing the risk as an asphyxiant when nitrogen displaces oxygen in the air to levels below that required to support life. Exposure to nitrogen can cause dizziness, nausea, sleepiness, vomiting, loss of consciousness and even death. Death may result from errors in judgment, confusion or loss of consciousness that prevents self-rescue. At low oxygen concentration, unconsciousness and death may occur in minutes and without warning. Industry Study Results ABS Global, DeForest, Wisconsin, conducted several studies in 2010 to learn about the hazards of transporting and storing liquid nitrogen semen tanks. Their findings include: Transportation Precautions: ABS placed two newly filled tanks in the back seat of a crew cab truck. In three minutes, the cab of the pickup was unsafe for human occupancy. One hour later, the level of oxygen had depleted to 14.7%. In a similar test, one of the tanks was tipped on its side, and in less than one minute, the oxygen in the cab had fallen below 18.3%. Ten minutes later, the oxygen level had depleted to 9.7%. “Proper transportation of semen tanks is needed for people to remain safe,” said Ron Zeihen, a safety specialist at ABS. Zeihen explained there is continual venting of nitrogen from the tank to prevent an explosion. In an air-tight vehicle, this release of

Proper Transportation – Semen tanks should only be transported securely in the bed of a truck or in a sealed compartment where no passengers are present or may enter. (Photo by ABS Global) nitrogen can be deadly. “There are too many risks involved with hauling a semen tank inside the passenger compartment of a vehicle rather than in the bed of the pickup truck.” Undetected leaks, the tank’s age and the length of time in an enclosed space all affect the risks of hauling a tank inside the passenger compartment of a vehicle. Storage Precautions: ABS also conducted studies at its cryogenic storage warehouse where 10 newly filled tanks were placed into a 12’ x 15’ (1,440 cubic feet) enclosed, non-ventilated room. The result: it took 18 minutes for the air to become unsafe for human occupancy. The longer the tanks sat, the more the oxygen level continued to decrease. To keep the tank safe, out of the way and out of extreme weather, producers might place the tank in a confined room or closet. “If you have tanks stored in a room or closet, make sure it is always ventilated. A passthrough air vent in the door can help keep airflow in the room,” Zeiben said. Safety First Shocked to hear the results of the ABS

Safety First This Breeding Season research, commercial cattleman John Belveal, Morin Ranch, of Hereford, Oregon, said he was going to make immediate changes after hearing the data. Each April, 100% of the cow herd is AI’d at the Morin Ranch by Belveal’s wife, Waynette, therefore, a semen tank is a staple at the ranch. The Belveals do not transport the tank to pastures during AI season, as the cows are AI’d at the site where the tank is stored year-round. Their local semen company representative fills the tank on-site. However, they admit to being unaware of the cautions they should be taking to move the tank from one-site to another. “I thought I was being careful by securing the tank with a seatbelt to prevent it from tipping over,” he said. “I did not think about its ability to impact the oxygen level if I had it sitting upright in the pickup cab with me.” Belveal admitted he did have a tank tip over on him during transpor-

40

RED ANGUS Magazine n April 2021

tation. “The tank was filled clear to the top and froze a spot in the seat,” he remembered. Belveal recognized his first plan of action would be to make some changes in the room where the tank is stored. “That room is air-tight. The door is always closed, even when we are in the room.” Thus, he plans to monitor the oxygen level in the room from now on, however, he will not rely on only that action, “I will add in ventilation as one never knows when a tank might be emitting more than we suspect or going bad.” This Red Angus cattleman’s new awareness will be shared with his family and other neighboring cattlemen to keep everyone safe. Gerald Feikema, a 35-year semen distribution representative from Brookings, South Dakota, agrees with Belveal. The last thing Feikema wants to hear is the loss of a cattleman due to lack of awareness. Recalling his

years in the AI business, he said, “I know of countless people who travel with semen tanks in the same compartment of the vehicle as they are in. Looking back now, I believe I have been affected by liquid nitrogen while driving to the point of fatigue or maybe even impairment.” Merlyn Sandbulte, ABS Beef Business Manager, of Rock Valley, Iowa, spends the spring months hosting educational seminars in his territory and informing cattlemen about the dangers of oxygen depletion when transporting or storing a semen tank. “We become such creatures of habit, but which would you prefer, a few minutes to be safe or a tragedy?” This breeding season, Sandbulte encouraged producers to get creative and implement a system to securely and safely transport a semen tank in the bed of a pickup truck and to take the time to evaluate the location where the tank is stored. n

Reaping Profit in the Sandhills by Teres Lambert for the Red Angus Magazine Some 40 years ago, Boettcher Sandhills Ranch of Atkinson, Nebraska, was like many Sandhills commercial cow-calf operations: The ranch ran Herefords, then tried crossbreeding with an exotic breed to boost calf weights and increase female quality. When the results of this crossbreeding scheme weren’t taking the herd in their desired direction, Scott Boettcher and his dad, Jim, searched for another breed.

He has a 60-day calving season that starts in late-February. Heifers calve two to three weeks in front of their older herdmates.

On the advice of a friend and a feedlot manager, the father and son decided to give Red Angus bulls a try.

For the past three or four years, Scott has relied on his iPad and a surveillance camera to identify if a first-calf heifer needs assistance or is doing okay on her own. He added that “a cool thing” about watching a heifer calving using the camera and iPad is that, when a calf is being born, “the calf’s eyes light up at night on the camera so you know the calf is breathing.”

“Dad and I made the decision together to use Red Angus genetics 18 years ago,” Scott states. “Trying Red Angus bulls on our Salers and Hereford X Salers females did the trick.”

Females are calved in lots close to the house. Heifers are brought into the barn to calve only if the weather is bad. Otherwise, they calve in the lots, being brought into a corral at night when the weather is bad.

“We were running about 600 head of spring cows at the time and kept buying Red Angus bulls. As the years passed and as we had more Red Angus genetics in our herd, the better our herd became. Today our commercial cows are 100% Red Angus – and we only use Red Angus bulls on them.”

When Scott is out feeding, his wife pitches in.

When Jim retired five years ago, Scott purchased part of the herd from his dad and his mom Evadene. Today this operation is a one-man show, with Scott running about 450 head of commercial Red Angus females which includes about 100 head of females still owned by his parents.

Older cows are checked three to four times during the day. At night, they are on their own unless a storm or blizzard occurs. Scott operates on the philosophy that cows 5 years old and older know how to raise a calf.

To make this one-man show manageable, Scott runs the spring cows in four bunches: first-calf heifers, second calvers to 4-year-old cows, 5-year-old and older cows and his parents’ cows.

Boettcher Ranch, founded 40 years ago, transitioned from a Hereford crossbreeding operation to 100% Red Angus managed by Scott Boettcher.

44

RED ANGUS Magazine n April 2021

“You need to spend time with the heifers, so Joni is my eyes when I’m out feeding,” Scott said. “Joni checks the heifers. If one is calving, she will send a text if it looks like a heifer is going to need help.”

“You take care of your cows, and they will take care of you,” he said. “If you keep your cows in good shape, she will calve on her own. If you want to skimp and not put anything into her, rough her along, you might just have challenges at calving time. “Our year-round mineral program pays off at calving time and at breeding.”

Reaping Profit in the Sandhills When the weather is bad, females are fed morning and evening. Otherwise, they get 30 pounds of hay a day through the winter months. Although he doesn’t weigh calves at birth, he does tag every calf at birth. His tagging system tells him which calf belongs to which cow and allows him to track the performance of a female’s offspring. Pairs are moved to cleaner ground after they calve and are given hay. Better quality hay is fed to the younger cows and replacement heifers, with some of the better quality hay fed closer to the spring of the year. By the first of May, the spring calvers are pretty well done, and other management tasks require attention: branding, vaccinating, etc. Since this job is more than a one-man show, Scott exchanges help with neighbors and a cousin. “I couldn’t get everything done without good neighbors and a cousin – and divine help from above,” Scott said. This Sandhills operation doesn’t rope and drag. Instead, calves are run through a homemade hydraulic chute that Scott created. The hydraulic calf table can be loaded in the back of a pickup and hauled to where cattle are being worked.

1DWXUDO )HG 1DWXUDO 5HG

“I’m not AIing so I’ll spend extra dollars on a bull that looks like he should produce good-quality calves,” Scott said. “I look only at the top-end of a guy’s bull offering. “At one time, I tried to get some bargain bulls. Today, I’m wiser and know that if I want to keep building my herd, I have to look at the top-end bulls. I am willing to put the dollars out there.” When it comes to identifying bulls for his program, Scott prefers older bulls over yearlings but he has purchased a significant number of yearling bulls. He zeroes in on disposition, scrotal circumference, good feet and legs, depth of body, maternal characteristics and width. He pays attention to EPDs and weights, particularly birthweights. He says bulls with an 80- to 90-pound birth weight don’t scare him because he knows his females. “I also look for bulls with eye appeal,” he elaborated. “Eye appeal sells in the sale ring. When someone looks at your cattle, they want to like the animals they are looking at.”

Reaping Profit in the Sandhills Scott admits that he is challenged when it comes to identifying “heifer bulls.” He tends to go with bulls that have a lower birth weight, 70 to 75 pounds max. While some people tell him that his heifers are big enough to handle a higher birth weight, he’s cautious. Scott typically uses a bull five to seven years. The ratio of cows to bull is 20-to-1 for younger bulls and up to 30-to-1 for older bulls. About 30 years ago, Boettcher Sandhills Ranch added a fall herd. This fall herd, which now numbers 100 head, came to be when Scott and his dad decided to give open females a second chance. “Cows get two chances, but that’s it,” Scott said. “They don’t get a third chance. They go to town.” Scott culls about 10% annually. If a female is open a second time, is losing body condition or weans a poor calf, she’s gone. When a cow reaches 10, she will get a highly critical eye and will only remain in the herd if she’s still producing equal to, or better than, her herd mates.

Boettcher’s heifer calves consistently outsell the steers due in large part to the maternal benefits of Red Angus. Hay Country With the ranch located on the edge of the Nebraska Sandhills, farm ground is non-existent. It’s all native grass, hay and cake. If grain is needed, it has to be purchased, and only heifers being grown out may get grain.

“Some of our oldest spring cows are 12 and 13,” he confided. “We year brand, so I can tell the age of a female at a glance.”

Cows are fed 30 pounds of prairie hay per day per cow to keep them in good condition. He runs 50 to 100 head to a pasture on a rotational grazing program and has permanent fencing rather than electric fence. He tries to get 30 to 50 days off the meadows in the fall.

Reaping Profit in the Sandhills “You can’t abuse the ground and overgraze it. On the other hand, grass can get too rank and they won’t eat it,” he said. “You gotta read the cows. They tell you when there isn’t anything good left.” Pre-condition shots are given in September and October. Springborn calves are weaned the first part of November, with all but about 40 head of the lighter end sent to a backgrounder.

“For the past several years, our Red Angus females have outsold our steers. It’s the heifer crop, year after year, that keeps our ranch in business,” he said. “Our buyers really like their conception rates.”

This past fall, the top-end calves averaged 620 to 630 pounds off the cow. The 400 head going to the backgrounder averaged 575 pounds – that’s all genetics, mama cow, grass and mineral. Steer calves are typically marketed in January, averaging close to 720 pounds this year. Scott also goes through the short-yearling heifers in January and selects 40 to 43 replacements for his own herd. He doesn’t select any for his parents’ herd since they are lessening numbers. The remaining heifers are marketed in February and March, with 110-120 – about 80% – going to fellow commercial cattlemen.

Until a year ago, Scott sold a majority of the ranch’s heifers through a friend’s bull sale. When that avenue closed, he simply put out the word that the ranch’s heifers would be sold by private treaty.

He confided that many individuals thought he priced the heifers “pretty high,” but “I got the price I asked.” “I was recently asked if I thought about crossbreeding again. I asked the person ‘Why would I?’,” he said. “I told him that I don’t need to crossbreed when you consider the prices I am getting for my cattle and the quality I am getting.” Scott concluded, “My dad spent most of his life in debt expanding the ranch to double in size and finally paying it off. One of my dad’s wishes is to keep the home place going, and Red Angus is helping us do that.” n

Cow-Side Considerations in Putting the Marketing Puzzle Together by Nate Smith, Top Dollar Angus General Manager The majority of the industry takes into account only part of the genetics an animal carries when it enters the marketplace. The “Y” chromosome is highlighted in groups of steers, because they perform better than heifers. Additionally, it has become the norm to advertise bulls that were used to sire the calves being marketed, typically including the name of the seedstock provider as verification of the product. This approach pretty much applies to both feeder cattle and replacement heifers. The question is, “Why have sellers continued to use sire-only information, given it’s only 50% of the genetic equation? Also, “What opportunities are available if we put more focus upon the other half of the equation (the cow herd) in our operation?” Let’s walk through a few thoughts on this below. So why do we consider just one data point or one generation of genetics from the bull side? In short, it is because we know that 50% of any calf crop’s genetic potential is inherited from the sire(s). It’s a simple message that is easy to understand, and gives us a slice of data that can be leveraged to help market our feeder calves. Before the advent of EPDs, one of the best tools a producer could use to help add value to his calf crop was to purchase seedstock that carried a reputation for being high-quality. Since then, we have gradually moved genetic selection and marketing toward the use of multiple data points measured against a larger population. EPDs do that, providing statistically relevant data for breeding decisions and, more recently, in feeder calf marketing. This progression has been truly revolutionary to the quality of product provided from the ranch to the feedlot segment and to the consumer. What is amazing is that these improvements have been made without much intentional focus on the cow side of the equation. Although the focus has been on the sire side in feeder cattle marketing, we have also inadvertently improved the cow herd along the way. It is easy for a commercial producer to see the impact made by his sires year to year.

However, the cow side evolves more slowly, with many herds that retain heifers having the perception of a tight genetic pool. When DNA testing is involved, it is interesting to have producers take a step back and see what the female side of the genetic equation actually looks like. By testing replacement heifer candidates, there is often a “light bulb” moment, when a producer realizes just how much impact a female carries when comparing two half-sisters that are very genetically different. The tools to make such comparisons have provided the ability to make continual genetic improvements in the cow herd. While it may be difficult to see day to day, monitoring yearly DNA scores is becoming more producer friendly all the time. And as ranchers monitor female-related data points from year to year, they will also begin to see the potential of that information to help market their feeder calves as well. Will knowing the female contribution to the genetic equation is as important as the sire side mean ranchers will quit marketing animals based on sire information only? In all likelihood, no, but the data and information presented to the next segment of the supply chain will continue to evolve. Verification of genetics in commercial herds is on the rise and for good reason. Knowledge of the sires used, as well as the cow side of the equation, will become even more important. New technologies in data management and DNA testing, and the increased use of artificial insemination, are helping to improve profitability using the female piece of the production and marketing puzzle. These tools promote herd improvement and make the industry more efficient, while reducing risk for the cow-calf producer and cattle feeder. n

Member News In Memory Jackie Klopfer Jackie Klopfer, friend, mentor, outstanding and true advocate for the Red Angus breed, left this earthly home October 6, 2020. In 1974, Jackie joined Pioneer Beef Cattle as a salesman. It was then his passion for the Red Angus breed began, seeing how well Red Angus outperformed other breeds. Jackie and his late wife Elaine took their first show string to a national show in 1977 where they were awarded Premier Exhibitor. From that day forward Jackie would adamantly disagree with anyone who didn’t believe performance cattle can be successful in the show ring. Throughout the years, Jackie had a hand in breeding many of the breed’s top performance cattle as well as show ring champions. His passion for the reds didn’t stop at the end of his personal farm gates. He served on the national board for six years and was heavily involved in promotion and advertising. In 1989, all he and Elaine’s work was recognized when they were awarded the RAAA Personality of the Year award. This was one of the awards that made him most proud. Jackie always had a soft spot for

youth that had a twinkle in their eye for working with cattle. One rule he was always firm with, was the use of the word “can’t.” No matter what the task, that was one phrase not to be used. He loved to win, but even more than that he loved to teach his knowledge to any young person that was willing to listen. Jackie served as a teacher, mentor and coach for many young hopefuls in the cattle industry, always encouraging and having an ear to listen. Jackie’s famously big smile was large when he won, but even larger when he saw the success of a young showman. Later in his life, Jackie attended Mt. Gilead Church before moving to Colonial Terrace nursing home. While a resident there he served as the resident council president. He took that role very seriously, always looking out for the interests of everyone there. This level of care and devotion was awarded with the Sebree “Citizen” of the year. Jackie will be dearly missed by many, and never forgotten. Cornelia Flikkema Vander Molen Cornelia (Nene) Flikkema Vander Molen was added to God’s crown of jewels on February 17, 2021. This song is one of many that mom would sing to us “three little girls” at

night, as she lay at the end of our bed. Mom had a servant’s heart and in every phase of her life she used that heart to help others. Whether she was bringing meals out to the field, cooking at the Eagles Roost, cooking at Manhattan Christian School Cafeteria or cooking at the Churchill Retirement Home, she did it with love! Do you see the theme…cooking, she loved to prepare meals for anyone who needed one. She was the best at roast beef dinner!! Mom was born on December 28, 1931, and lived the first years of her life in Hull, Iowa. She ventured to Montana as a teenager and fell in love with a dashing young man by the name of Philip Flikkema; they married in October of 1952. Together they have six children, Vonnie Kimm (Charlie), Everett Flikkema (Laurie), Glen Flikkema (Diana), Carol Feddes (Chuck), Leanne Moss (Keith) and Halane VanDyken (Rick). In 1995 dad died and mom was alone for 18 years. During those years she was always busy! Although she never wanted to be in the spotlight, her light showed in everything she did. She trusted God to provide, she believed in His promises, and she lived out her faith, even in the last weeks of her life. One of the last visits with mom was done over Skype and God graciously allowed her to remember the words of the song “To God Be the Glory, Great Things He Hath Done!” Not only was this gracious to mom,

worked, and the songs were always ones of praise to her Savior, or of the promises of God! What a precious memory! When she was 80 years old, she married Harold Vander Molen and they spent eight years together. The companionship and time they spent together was a blessing!

RED ANGUS Magazine n April 2021

Mom had 10 brothers and sisters and she loved each of them dearly. Losing her most dear sister Margaret in April 2020 was very hard on Mom, but she again clung to the promise that they would see each other again in Glory. Mom was also grandma to 15 grandchildren and 19 great-grandchildren, with a new great-grandchild on the way in April. Grandma took special care to pray for each of her grandkids and great-grandkids by name; it was her greatest desire that each of them have a personal relationship with Jesus Christ! Grandma’s heart was broken, as was all of ours, when her grandson, Brett Flikkema, passed away. We will miss mom, grandma, and great-grandma beyond words, but what blessed assurance we have that we will see her again in Glory! “To God be the glory, great things He has done!” Doris Leone Olson Kallestad At the age of 91, our beautiful Mother passed away peacefully in her home on Friday, February 19, 2021. She was born January 25, 1930 to Jesse and Grace Olson in Garneill, Montana and was later joined by brother, Phil. Maybe this is where she got all her humility; as they didn’t have much. They moved to Kelly Canyon, east of Bozeman where she lived until graduating from Bozeman High School. When she was 20, Mom tied the knot with Dad, Clinton Kallestad. They began their life together in Bozeman; started a family in less than two years. Son (Arne) and then daughter (Joy) joined just two years later. Soon after, they moved to an old house at Spring Hill. The couple built a new house at that location. Our mama had a green thumb and the goose berries she had there were nice and plump from all the rain that dumped before

Member News going over the Bridger Mountains. Wanting to make their living off the land; in 1963 Mom and Dad relocated to the Dry Creek area between Belgrade and Manhattan. Another old house, but they were able to build a dream – raising cattle. Along came a surprise; daughter (Kay) was born. Mom said there must have been something in the water.

Jess Martin, Carrie (Kevin) Chase, Renee (Brad) Kamerman and Kara (Paul) Herbst; nine great grandchildren, two nieces and a nephew. Mom was dearly loved by all. Her children, grand-children and friends all have endless stories and fond memories of her. She was most definitely a class act. We all miss you Mom – love you

Ranching wasn’t always profitable, so Mom also worked at a bank in Bozeman until she started working for the ASCS office in the federal building and later on the north end of town until her retirement. With her ambitious nature, Mom always had a big garden; she shared, canned and provided for her family.

Mom was preceded in death by her parents and husbands. She is survived by her brother Phil (DarLyne) Olson, son Arne (Robin), daughters Joy Martin and Kay (Dave) Klompien; grandchildren Ginger (Steve) Zieglowsky, Sage (Linsey) Kallestad,

As per her request, Mom was cremated at Dokken-Nelson. An “immediate family only” service will be held at a later date. Donations and Memorials can be made to the Gallatin Cattlewomen where Mom served as a member for many years. n

Another house was built in 1971. Son, Arne, purchased the ranch and moved into the house in 1983. Mom and Dad moved again; set up camp in a trailer house on the south-east corner of the ranch, where another home was built a few years later. Mom lived in that house until her last day.

Dad (Clint) passed away in 1994. Mom remained a widow until 2005 when she married Ray Swanson. Together they enjoyed reading, lawn and garden work, rodeos and traveling in the motor home. Ray passed in 2017.
