Data Is the Road Map Greetings from North Dakota. I hope everyone is enjoying the fall and is prepared, or at least is preparing, for winter. Congratulations to all who worked on the annual convention. It was a fun, informative event. Whether you attended the breakout sessions, listened to the committee reports or took advantage of the Learning Lounge, you left with more knowledge about the Red Angus breed and gained insight into everything your board and staff do to advance the Red Angus breed within the industry. A common theme throughout the convention was the need for more data! As stakeholders in a fantastic breed of cattle, we’re fortunate to be involved in a breed that has focused on the economics of commercial cattle production. Red Angus cattle excel economically in multiple arenas within the industry – maternal, structurally sound, efficient-gaining, high-dollar end-product cattle, all in a sustainable package. These traits are all substantiated by data. As we all know, the more data the higher the predictability. We also know the higher the predictability, the higher the confidence level in our

product, whether that’s at the cowcalf sector, backgrounding, finishing or ultimately, the consumer’s plate. Confidence equates into market share. Data is absolutely the cornerstone to success! Data drives the bus in so many industry sectors and, as stakeholders, we all need to do our part to enhance the breed that sustains our businesses. Industry stakeholders, no matter what sector of the business we are in, need to ask ourselves if we can help drive the bus to more market share by contributing more data. The RAAA staff is working on a program that will help analyze all aspects of an individual’s data turned into the office. Then, a report will show you how you rank compared to fellow members. This report will be an eye opener for all of us and will be a great tool to help us become better stewards of data. In closing, I would like to encourage all of us to grab hold of the rope and help pull Red Angus to the heights it so deserves within the industry. Pulling together is still the best way to achieve any goal. Whistle, grin and ride.

Here are a few quick stats on attendance: first-time attending members: 71, total members: 228; and for the Commercial Cattlemen’s Symposium, 208. We appreciated seeing our Canadian Angus Association friends, Sheldon Kyle, current CAA president, and Myles Immerkar, CEO. We also want to thank our many sponsors and industry partners who made the event possible and brought new ideas and information for Red Angus breeders and commercial producers to consider and explore. Each Red Angus Convention is a little different due to its location and the meeting agenda, which is modified slightly from year to year to make

it run smoothly and better serve attendees. We added more educational workshops this year and all were well attended. Topics included: Best Practices for Running a State Affiliate, Generation Transfer, Building Your Brand, Data Management and Contemporary Grouping and Leveraging Your Leadership. Along with the positive socialization aspects of this year’s Convention, it was clear that many attendees had a goal of learning something new or adding to their current knowledge on certain topics. Convention speakers are always a highlight, and this year’s lineup was perhaps the best. From analyzing the feeder cattle and cull cow markets to finding motivation in both success and extreme hardship, our presenters brought their Red Angus audience much to consider from a variety of

Association Commentary – Red Angus Convention in Boise a Huge Success perspectives. We enjoyed and appreciated what they had to say, the challenges they proffered and are grateful for their contribution to the event. Another important part of every Convention is the annual membership meeting. This included both RAAA update presentations, as well as regional and area caucuses. Caucusing allowed members from similar geographies to meet and discuss various issues affecting their operations. It’s also a time to meet candidates for board director seats being vacated by retiring directors. A climax event occurred on Friday evening with the awards banquet. This long-running celebration recognized those who have gone above and beyond in their contribution to the advancement of the Red Angus breed, not just for years, but in many cases, for decades. It is an enjoyable time to applaud those who have given so much, and to reminisce about

10

days gone by and the work done by so many to make Red Angus all that it is today. We want to recognize the contribution of outgoing board members Connie Mushrush, Sam Lorenzen, Newley Hutchison, and especially immediate past-president, Johnny Rogers. Due to COVID, Johnny spent three years as RAAA president and a total of 10 years on the board. Thank you, Johnny, for your long-standing dedication and service to the Red Angus breed! Welcome to our new board members, Stephanie Jung, Jason Anderson and Craig Bieber, as well as newly elected president, Steve Koester. The breed and Association have a lot on the docket during the months ahead, and it will continue to take a strong team effort to help Red Angus realize all its potential as time progresses.

RED ANGUS Magazine November 2021

Overall, the 2021 Boise Red Angus Convention was one for the history books. More than $63,000 was raised for the Red Angus Foundation auction, which will help the Red Angus cause through research, education and support of junior activities. Much more could be said, but attendees would probably summarize by saying our 68th Convention was productive and enjoyable. Soon, we will begin making plans for the 69th Convention, which will be held Sept. 14-16, 2022, in Kalispell, Montana. We hope to see you there!

Marketing Update by Nolan Woodruff, Commercial Marketing Specialist

Use All Things to Your Advantage, Including Red Angus’ Allied Access Program If you attended your biology class during your freshman year of high school, you probably remember learning about heterosis, or hybrid vigor. Heterosis uses the strengths of another breed to complement the many great traits of Red Angus to gain performance. Because the association has seen great value in heterosis, Red Angus has long promoted the use of crossbreeding to get the best of both worlds. Every day, ranchers take advantage of having a heavier calf at

sale time by using crossbreeding, but why take advantage of one thing but not another? The Red Angus Allied Access program has allowed many producers to effectively use crossbreeding while still being able to enroll those calves into an RAAA age- and source-verification program. Since its inception in 2012, the Allied Access program has allowed producers to take advantage of Red Angus programs while reaping the benefits of crossbreeding.

If calving dates are being recorded and the calves are managed separately from other herds, every calf born qualifies the day it is born. Use of the Allied Access program allows producers to enroll in other verification programs at a discounted rate all while on the phone with our Red Angus Value-Added Department. Use all things to your advantage to benefit your operation, including Red Angus Marketing programs.

Top-Performing Cattle Earn Prestigious Grid Master Award By Megan Underwood, Red Angus Association of America media intern The Grid Master Award, an honor bestowed by the Red Angus Association of America, is earned by operations who have successfully combined high-performing Red Angus genetics, skillful feeding and precise marketing to achieve success with the slaughter of superior beef carcasses. Nolan Woodruff, RAAA commercial marketing specialist, announced the

recipients of the 2021 Grid Master Awards at the 68th annual National Red Angus Convention held Sept. 1517, in Boise, Idaho. “Red Angus producers continue to raise the bar by marketing high-quality cattle on the rail. This year, 16 operations representing almost 1,300 head received the title of Grid Master. Taking these great cattle to market

has proven that Red Angus cattle have the ability to convert feed efficiently and produce a valuable end product. Congrats to this year’s recipients of this award,” said Woodruff. To be named a Grid Master, entries must be Red Angus or Red Angus-in-

Spring Heifer Exposure Due First Week of November Spring Heifer Exposure information is due on Friday, Nov. 5 and is one of the simplest data sets to report other than herd inventories. Heifer exposure data is a tool used to enhance the accuracy of the HPG EPD. What should be reported regarding heifer exposure? Yearling heifers from 9 to 17 months of age that appear on the prelisted spring inventory and will be entering the herd inventory and are subject to THR assessments in 2022. The information to report is: • Breeding season dates – beginning and end dates. We must have both to accept data. • Exposure information – Yes or No • Contemporary group designation • Disposal information (if applies) Updated Video Tutorials Coming Soon When REDSPro was released in 2017, a set of video tutorials came along with it to help guide members through RAAA processes. Over the years, modifications and enhancements have been created for overall efficiencies. With that, a new set of video tutorials will be coming soon. Please be aware these will be released in sections over time. The first set of new tutorials will cover warnings and errors regarding data submissions. All tutorials can be found via REDSPro > announcements tab after member login. Is DNA On Your Mind? We Recommend Submitting Now Sample Collection Fall weaning consistently presents itself as a prime opportunity to collect DNA samples as those young animals are already being worked. However, DNA is an operational task that must be pre-planned to make sure materials are gathered in time, meaning collection kits are ordered and arrived on location. These kits can be requested at any time

HOLIDAY SCHEDULE The RAAA office will be closed the following days during the holidays:

of the year from RAAA’s DNA department. We have Allflex Tissue Sampling Units and applicators, plus blood and hair cards in inventory for requests based on animal head counts. In this case, shipping time consumes the most time. Sample Submission Samples are sent off to the lab for processing at least two times a week. However, for RAAA to be able to submit samples to the lab for processing, a couple of items must be compiled and completed. 1. DNA order form is filled out properly. Each animal must be listed on the order form with proper ID, barcode and test marked. 2. DNA order form is signed, releasing samples to RAAA. 3. Payment in full is received. This can be via check or credit card. Submitting payment at time of submission is preferred. If staff have to reach out after samples arrive, this can delay the submission process. After samples are submitted and received at the lab, results will be returned in 20 business days. Busy season has officially arrived for DNA submissions and we recommend submitting your information months ahead of the sale season.

Understanding Carcass EPDs and Influence on Carcass Prices by Ryan Boldt, Director of Breed Improvement Understanding traits and how they affect carcass prices is an important consideration for all commercial producers. Traditionally, approximately 20-25% of females are retained as replacements, so much of each calf crop enters a terminal system. It’s no surprise that a common goal is to continually improve end product merit to allow for a more marketable calf crop. However, it’s sometimes fuzzy on what each carcass EPD predicts and how that factors into the ultimate price received when cattle are hanging on the rail. The results you will see are determined by multiple factors. These include the animal’s genetics, as well as the environment the animal experiences. What this boils down to is that to receive a favorable result, both factors need to work together to achieve results that are worthy of bragging about. Carcass Weight One factor that determines price is carcass weight. The more pounds that are produced, the higher the return. However, it’s important to remember that plants and grids impose penalties for carcasses that are heavy or light. Based on USDA data, carcasses greater than 1,000 pounds will receive discounts and carcasses more than 1,050 pounds will receive steep discounts. So, the goal for carcass weights is to target a weight that fits into the parameters where discounts can be avoided for extreme carcasses. Carcass Yield A second factor that determines carcass price is carcass yield. This is determined via the USDA yield grade equation. This equation contains components related to back fat, kidney, pelvic and heart fat thickness, carcass weight

Rib eye area affects both quality and yield grade scores. 24

and rib eye area. These components are combined using a mathematical formula to calculate the yield grade for the carcass. For this component, a Yield Grade of 3 serves as the base. Animals that fall into a Yield Grade 3 will not receive any premiums or discounts. From there, animals that receive Yield Grades of 1 and 2 are given premiums while animals that receive Yield Grades of 4 and 5 receive discounts. Quality Grade Another major factor that determines carcass value is the animal’s quality grade. The quality grade represents the amount of marbling present in the rib eye when it is harvested. For this parameter, a quality grade of Choice with a marbling score of Small serves as the base for the comparisons. From there are two other subcategories of Choice which include Modest and Moderate. Some grids pay significant premiums for animals that receive these marbling grades. Three marbling grades fall into Prime: Slightly Abundant, Moderately Abundant and Abundant. Below Choice, there are two categories which are known as Select and Standard which have marbling scores or Slight, Traces and Practically Devoid. These categories receive discounts compared to the base. EPD Significance Now that some of the factors that determine differences in carcass pricing have been identified, how can EPDs help? An EPD helps to move the average performance of a calf crop in a desired direction. RAAA currently publishes five EPDs that help identify genetic differences in genetic merit for carcass traits. These EPDs include Marbling (MARB), Yield Grade (YG), Carcass Weight (CW), Rib Eye Area (REA) and Back Fat (BF). Each of these EPDs can help move the next generation in a more favorable direction for the desired traits.

Carcass ultrasound data contributes to the accuracy of EPDs.

Understanding Carcass EPDs and Influence on Carcass Prices Assume that your last calf crop was harvested on a grid, and you received data back that determined the average quality grade of the group was at the base or Choice with a Small marbling score. You are interested in improving this trait so that your next calf crop can gain more premiums for the higher quality grade categories. For this situation, the Marbling EPD will be useful because it will move that trait. However, an EPD will not tell you what result you will get. A particular EPD does not correspond to a specific Marbling Score outcome. The only way for this to be useful is that EPD needs to be compared to another EPD. One method to do this would be to take the average of your current bull battery and as you pick your next group of bulls, you identify animals that will improve the average of the bulls for that trait. This EPD is expressed in terms of the numerical marbling score associated with each of the different quality grade categories. Comparing these differences can provide insights into what the change of the average marbling score would be if a bull with a higher marbling score was used given equivalent environments. It should be mentioned that single trait selection, like this example, is never the ideal approach to genetic improvement. Among traits, genetic relationships exist. Selecting solely for a single trait may lead to unintended consequences in other traits. A better approach is to use selection indexes to identify animals that excel in numerous traits and then identify animals that fit your particular breeding objective.

High-Speed Genetics New technology rapidly and accurately replicates specific traits in cattle by Macey Mueller for the Red Angus Magazine From EPDs and artificial insemination to genomic testing and in vitro fertilization, beef producers have made tremendous advancements in genetic selection and animal reproduction technologies over the years. Now, the industry’s newest state-of-the-art reproduction tool – precision breeding – has the potential to dramatically speed up genetic improvement. Precision breeding, also known as gene editing, uses CRISPR-Cas9 technology to target a region of the genome during an animal’s single-cell state to strategically alter the DNA for a specific trait. A precision-bred animal is identical to one that could occur naturally through traditional reproduction processes, but this cutting-edge innovation allows for precise, rapid and safe replication of the desired trait, rather than waiting for the trait to emerge through several generations of breeding. As a leading progressive breed organization, the Red Angus Association of America announced they will provide herdbook registry of Red Angus animals carrying gene-edited traits for heat tolerance and coat color.

High-Speed Genetics Sonstegard said that while the traits approved by RAAA are naturally occurring and could be achieved through generations of crossbreeding animals, gene editing eliminates the possibility of passing along the undesirable genetic merit of other populations. It’s important to note that gene editing is not the same as genetic modification. Sonstegard said the GMO process, known as transgenesis, introduces genetic material from other organisms, resulting in an animal that could not be found in nature or bred conventionally. Instead, the gene editing process alters genes naturally found in an animal that could potentially also be introduced via conventional crossbreeding. “The meat and dairy products from an animal developed by Acceligen using precision breeding are no different from their non-edited equivalents,” he said. “We are simply expediting the selective breeding process.” Using precision breeding, Acceligen scientists developed a naturally cool or “SLICK” trait that mimics the thermotolerant genes found in

criollo breeds of cattle, like Senepol, with a natural adaptation to heat. High-Speed Genetics Using elite black Angus genetics, Acceligen scientists introduced changes into the cells and created embryos. Sonstegard said black-to-red gene-edited calves will begin hitting the ground this fall and winter. Sabreena Larson, Acceligen Chief Operations Officer, regularly works with all sectors of the beef value chain in understanding and accepting this new technology. She said both gene-edited traits are currently undergoing regulatory review, but are available to breeders on a pre-commercial basis through Acceligen. Currently the technology is being regulated like a drug through the FDA, but there is an industry push to see gene-edited traits regulated similarly to genetically modified corn under the U.S. Department of Agriculture. “We don’t see any major issues get-

ting these traits approved for commercial use, and we are optimistic they should be decided by the time we are putting producer calves on the ground,” Larson said. “RAAA is really a leader in this technology adoption to improve and expand the breed, and we are eager to continue working with them on additional traits of interest to the breed.” Ryan Boldt, RAAA Director of Breed Improvement, said selectively accepting gene-edited animals into the Red Angus registry demonstrates the association’s commitment to genetic progress and to creating the necessary framework for the use of technological advancements in the breed. “RAAA has traditionally taken an approach based on sound science for the genetic improvement of animals,” he said. “We want to be at the forefront of any scientific innovations that allow our members to breed better animals, and we think this is another technolo-

gy that allows them to do that.” As with most new innovations entering the marketplace, Boldt said the editing process is currently expensive, but is not cost prohibitive. “Genotyping and cloning technologies were initially too pricey for most producers, but they are now used regularly in the industry today,” he said. “Likewise, as the technology continues to advance, we would expect the cost to decrease.” As the two gene-edited traits move through the review process, Boldt anticipates specific sire lines to be developed and disseminated through seedstock breeders. “It’s really an important and exciting time to be involved in genetics,” he said. “Introducing these technologies into the selection of animals allows us to create an expanded and overall better gene pool.”

The onset of the IGS-BOLT evaluation, paired with the submission of phenotypic records, has led to a new era in genetic evaluation for the cattle industry. In an effort to collect necessary female genotype and phenotype information to improve genetic predictions, the Red Angus Association of America Board of Directors has approved the Red Cow Rally. The Rally research collaboration between RAAA and Neogen is designed to increase phenotypic data collection and submission for mature weights, body condition scores and genotypes on Red Angus females. A limited number of research genotypes (GGP-LD) and rebate funds will be available for the project, so discounts and rebates will be issued on a first-come, first-served basis.

Blockchain: The Next Frontier in the Beef Industry by Chessie Mitchell, Value-Added Coordinator As the world of data transfer between beef industry sectors is becoming increasingly important, a new opportunity is emerging in animal agriculture – blockchain technology. Blockchain technology in its simplest form, at the risk of oversimplification, is an informational super highway to share data between different beef industry sectors on a ledger-type format. The technology creates an electronic “chain” of “blocks” of validated and verified data between parties that users can access for traceability and transparency within each sector of the beef industry. All powered by the use of RFID technology, blockchain is taking the world by storm in many industries across the globe. As the beef industry has a fragmented supply chain, current methods of communication between sectors make data transfer extremely difficult but desirable. One of the most prominent examples is a cow-calf producer’s low success rate in obtaining carcass data on their calves. Wouldn’t it be nice to receive that? Wouldn’t it be neat to see where your calves end up after you sell them at a sale barn? Or, as a feeder, obtain all the third-party program documents on the calves you purchased from a sale barn? Or the health information on a traded group of calves? The answer to our problems is the next big player in the game of technology in the beef industry. How It Operates RFIDs are tagged in a group of cattle at the ranch of origin, scanned, and information about the group (such as health, third-party programs, sire and dam information) is uploaded to an Application Program Interface system. From there, the cattle could be scanned at the sale barn and data such as weight could be uploaded to the API.

38

RED ANGUS Magazine November 2021

Once at the feedlot, the manager can use the information to improve processes or make better purchasing decisions. At the packer level, carcass data could be uploaded to match the RFIDs. Retailers could then track the protein from plate to pasture, if desired. Customers in each segment would have the opportunity to upload as much or as little information to the ledger-based system as they wish. Benefits to Beef Sectors The first question out of many people’s mouths is how this benefits different beef industry segments. For producers, blockchain can provide valuable data to make selection decisions and hopefully create ultimate transparency on how their cattle are performing further down the chain. For breed associations or third-party programs, this is an added-value service for customers and allows better data collection. For feedlots, blockchain can benefit existing and new relationships with cow-calf producers. Retail is always looking for ways to tell a positive story about the product they are placing in the market. Traceability is crucial in the industry, not only for safety reasons, but also the industry’s reputation. Blockchain use could create the ledger to trace an animal by individual ID back to the ranch of origin by a quick and straightforward search on the API. This means the industry can respond quickly and with reliable information obtained through the “blocks” of data on the “chain.” In all, the industry could maintain or improve its high reputation as a leader in traceability. Producers also ask essential questions about the safety of their data on the chain. First, the data is all shared over secure encrypted electronic environments. One of the biggest attributes of blockchain is that the data belongs solely to

Blockchain: The Next Frontier in the Beef Industry the producer. The producer has the choice to share as little or as much information as they wish whenever they want with selected transaction partners. You can choose to share portions or entire blocks of data one day and then change permissions for the same transaction partner a month later. The Next Frontier As we look into our crystal ball of what the beef industry hopes to look like in the future, we all know that technology will be vital to feeding the protein-hungry world. Through blockchain, a synergy unlike ever before can change the game for each beef industry sector. Data and management information sharing, transparency and traceability are all just the beginnings of exciting capabilities at hand with blockchain. You can take into account the definition of synergy and realize it’s the next frontier!

National Red Angus Convention Promotes Collaboration, Innovation and Elevation by Megan Underwood, Red Angus Association of America media intern

The Commercial Cattlemen’s Symposium hosted 207 producers.

After a year of cancellations due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Red Angus producers were finally able to gather in-person again at 68th annual National Red Angus Convention in Boise, Idaho. While in Boise, producers were able to collaborate over innovations discussed in general sessions, symposiums and workshops, and elect the new Board of Directors who will elevate the Red Angus breed. Convention attendees were able to hear from keynote speakers, Carey Portell and Lance Pekus. Portell shared her story of being a survivor of a drunk driver which led to disabling injures. This has not stopped Portell from continuing to farm, instead it has led her to break through all limitations with grace and grit. Portell is an active advocate of AgriAbility which is an organization that works with disabled individuals to work successfully in agriculture. “Acceptance is the key to my happiness. When I am disturbed, it is because I find some fact of my life unacceptable to me, and I can’t find happiness until I accept the situation as being exactly the way it is supposed to be at this moment,” said Portell. Pekus, known as the “Cowboy Ninja” during his appearances on several seasons of NBC’s America Ninja Warrior, shared his journey. Becoming the Cowboy Ninja brought together two of Pekus’ passions: ranching and a love for obstacle courses. Pekus never skips an opportunity to advocate for his way of life in the spotlight and promotes inclusivity by bringing families together with beef. “Overcoming obstacles is the key to being successful. Set goals. Identify obstacles. Prepare. Execute. Succeed or Fail,” explained Pekus.

During the Friday morning general session attendees heard from Matt Buyers and Jay Theiler. of Agri Beef, a company rooted in the Northwest with 13 operations within Idaho, Oregon and Washington. The company’s core values have been centered around honesty and integrity while driving innovation in the business to uphold their mission to sustainably produce the highest quality beef products. Working on sustainability is good for the business, the people and the community. “We get into it for the cattle; we become successful through the people,” said Buyers. Commercial Cattlemen’s Symposium

The annual convention kicked off with Commercial Cattlemen’s Symposium, which allowed attendees to collaborate with industry professionals to elevate the future of the beef industry, not just the Red Angus breed. The symposium began with a Feeder Calf Panel featuring Guthrie Newell of Agri Beef, Brock Hough of Beef Northwest, and Perry Martin of H3 Feeders LLC, explaining how the industry can collaborate to make the “perfect beast” through continuous innovation. Julian Garcia, Beef Northwest CEO, joined the discussion about feedyard uniqueness in the Pacific Northwest. A cull cow panel consisting of Trent Stewart of Central Oregon Livestock Auction, Randy Baxley of Visalia Livestock, and Eric Drees of 7 Rivers Livestock, provoked discussion on the opportunities for producers to add value to their cull cows.

The Ladies Symposium featured the 2020 Beef Advocate of the Year, Kiah Twisselman Burchett. Burchett is a California cattle rancher who accidently became a life coach after her personal health journey, losing more than 125 pounds. Burchett is on a mission to empower others to build a better relationship with themselves from the inside out while creating a healthy life they love, without sacrificing what they enjoy. While Burchett is known best worldwide for her healthy journey, she uses every opportunity in the spotlight to advocate for the beef industry.

“I started in beef and beef has been integral in every aspect of my life. I grew up in production agriculture. My career started in agricultural communications and now it’s crazy to think that my role in agriculture is not in production or communications, but it’s actually to empower the women in agriculture, to rebuild their

relationships with themselves too, and that feels like the greatest gift,” said Burchett. Convention Workshops Attendees had three opportunities to attend various workshops throughout the week. Workshop topics included: bull sale data analysis, best practices for running a state affiliate, interactive foot scoring, generational transfer and finances, data management and contemporary grouping, leading your leadership in the organization, data input and management panel, building your brand and how to use your data. The workshops offered something for everyone and received great participation from attendees. The 68th annual National Red Angus Convention was a success with 228 attendees representing more than 28 states and Canada who joined together to collaborate, innovate and elevate the Red Angus breed. The 2022 convention will be held in Kalispell, Montana, Sept. 14-16, and will continue to promote collaboration and innovation in the Red Angus Association of America.

JRA Update: My Red Cow Story by Morgan Marlett, 2021 JRA Round-Up Top Hand Editor’s note: The agricultural industry is a dynamic system that provides tremendous career opportunities. However, sometimes what catches your interest is different from the aspect of the industry in which your family is engaged. That’s where JRA member and 2021 Round-Up Top Hand Morgan Marlett found herself. Fortunately, her power of “want to” fueled her to establish connections, acquire resources and create learning opportunities to launch her future in the Red Angus cattle business. My history with the Red Angus breed has been brief, but nonetheless one of the most impactful periods of my life. It has given me unique opportunities for growth, hands-on learning experiences and friendships with some of the most hard-working people I’ve ever met. My red cow story began my senior year of high school as an experienced 4-Her. I had been involved in 4-H since I was eight and had participated in almost every aspect of the program from leading on my 4-H State Teen Council to showing horses and pigs. As I neared aging out, I had the brilliant idea to try something new that many of my friends already enjoyed — showing cattle. Luckily for me, I knew a family friend down the road whose daughters had shown cattle for the ranch he managed. I reached out and asked him some questions to see if my idea was possible.

Raymond Prescott, manager of Bull Hill Red Angus Ranch, was more than happy to work with me and was soon helping me select cattle to halter break for the upcoming show season. From then on, I was hooked.

break to explore the ranch, experience their calving season and attend their annual bull sale. I came back even more in love with the Red Angus breed and could not wait to return for my summer break.

The highlight of my day was spending time with my show heifers. It was during that time that I decided that beef cattle, and more importantly, Red Angus cattle, would be a part of my life forever.

As an intern, I was constantly pushed outside of my comfort zone to further my personal growth. I learned how to manage electric fencing, rotate pastures, move cattle on horseback and even tie several useful knots.

From there, my experiences with the Red Angus breed evolved. I interned with Mr. Prescott over my winter break and experienced a calving season for the first time. I assisted him with all aspects of calving and record-keeping while he patiently answered all my many questions.

The Ketchums were amazing teachers and always encouraged me to try new things, even if I didn’t believe I could do them myself.

I looked up to him significantly, and still do, and was thankful to have him as a mentor while I learned all about cattle management and care. I continued to show, help at Bull Hill and started thinking about the possibility of interning in another part of the country to learn more about cattle and rangeland management. Mr. Prescott supported me and suggested that I get in contact with good friends of his that had Red Angus in eastern Montana, the Ketchum family. I was soon able to talk with Bruce and Tena Ketchum, owners of Milk Creek Reds, and share my interest in interning. Before I knew it, I was headed to Montana for my spring

Morgan Marlett 48

Weighing a calf in Montana

I also learned more about the AI process. I was taught how to thaw semen straws, correctly use an AI gun, and efficiently work through large groups of cattle. My time there was unforgettable, and I came back to South Carolina a much more capable cattle woman. I rounded out the summer by attending the Junior Red Angus Round-Up for the first time. I had been wanting to attend for a couple of years, but had never had the chance to go, so I was excited! I arrived not knowing anyone and left the week with so many great friends that were as passionate about red cows as I am. Overall, my experience with the Red Angus breed has been nothing short of amazing. The opportunities that I have been given, friends I have made and people who have supported me on my journey were like none I have ever had before. I will forever be thankful that I found the Red Angus Association of America and am positive I will be involved with red cattle for the remainder of my lifetime.

Quality and Loyalty Are the Bedrock of Successful Marketing Guest Commentary by George Murdock, Area 1 West Director At some point during the Red Angus Convention in Boise, Idaho, someone asked if anyone had ever taken them out to a steak dinner and insisted on ordering a select grade of meat. “No choice or prime for us, select will do just fine.”

me, comped my pastrami sub and said he hoped I would come back. I did, the next day, and I was welcomed like an old-timer and asked if I wanted my usual. And during my 11 years in the district, Tony probably sold me a thousand subs.

Not likely.

A good many Red Angus sales occur during the noon hour because of Pacific Time, so I pack my lunch and spend an hour or so tuning in on auctions all over the country. My son laughs about the fact every so often a heifer shows up at the ranch dropped off by someone going through. He just sighs and says, “Oh, Dad must have been watching another sale.”

In the end, it’s always about quality – the quality of the steak, the quality of the company, the quality of what we are marketing and the quality of the experience we provide for our customers and those with whom we associate in the cattle world. I remember moving to a new community as a school district administrator. To be honest, I was a little reluctant to go out to lunch that first day because I didn’t know anyone, and I was used to the old line from Cheers – “Where everybody knows your name.”

He was a little taken aback once when 21 head showed up from a dispersal sale in Texas, but I quickly assured him they weren’t moving in – they were part of a deal I had going in Bend, Oregon.

Someone in the office suggested I try Tony’s Sub Shop a couple of blocks away. I ventured in and Tony himself asked, “Are you new in Walla Walla?” I told him I was, and he welcomed

Anyway, a lot of times when I am listening to those sales, the rancher himself is on the stand and he calls out the name of the buyer, particularly repeat buyers, and thanks them

for their loyalty. Good auctioneers sometimes do the same thing, it’s not a little thing – people like that kind of recognition and they like to be appreciated. “That one goes to the Powells over in Panhandle. They’ve been coming here for years, and they know the good ones.” I will admit upfront there are curmudgeons or unique characters in the cattle business whose cattle have some unique attribute that provides them the opportunity to peddle their production. They were there when I was in the purebred sheep business, and they are in the cattle business as well. You hold your nose, close your ears and write the check. This is, however, not the norm, it’s the exception and not a path to longterm success in the business – something a growing number of purebred cattle people are coming to understand. We are in a competitive business and while EPDs, show results, whether or not you bought their calves or a host of other factors are important, in the end, interpersonal relationships, integrity, interest in the success of the buyer and sincere commitment to their program goes a long way. It doesn’t make a lot of difference whether you are selling bulls, cars or a host of other commodities. People have options. When you make the experience something special, there is a very good chance they will be back. Return customers are like gold. “One and done” is a term we hear often in other fields. For the successful cattleman, it is not a key to building the foundation of a long-term operation. The breeders in our association who have been selling bulls for half a century or more, have a keen understanding of terms like loyalty, satisfaction and performance. Repeat

Quality and Loyalty Are the Bedrock of Successful Marketing customers are the bedrock of any producer who understands the logistics of successful marketing. Loyalty is an important factor and successful breeders understand the fact that not only is it important to have a relationship with those who support their program, it’s also important not to take them for granted and to constantly focus on progressive efforts to deliver a superior product to go along with the relationship between buyer and seller. And it doesn’t hurt to let the buyers know what you are doing to provide them with dividends. In September, I attended my first National Convention. I arrived on Monday and at that point, the legends I anticipated meeting were only names, By the end of the week, they were also faces and new friends.

Our strategic plan has several critical elements and one of those is the creation of relationships between our staff and our producers and between those involved in the business. Sure, it’s about the cattle, but never forget

“One of those factors setting Red Angus breeders apart is that they are more invested in the success of their buyers than they are in the success of their own program.” it’s also about the people. The Red Angus staff are famous for being willing to help with any question re-

gardless of whether it is part of their primary assignment. Our association has made it a priority that the relationship between our staff and our breeders is the highest priority. The Board of Directors have made it a priority to recognize the value of fostering relationships among those who share a common interest in Red Angus. At the starting line, everybody has a cow and a bull. What makes the difference at the finish line are the value-added factors – the things we focus on with our strategic plan. One of those factors setting Red Angus breeders apart is that they are more invested in the success of their buyers than they are in the success of their own program. In the end, it all comes around.

Pasture-to-Plate, Blockchain and Beef by Nate Smith, General Manager When we hear the word “technology” associated with the beef industry, most of our minds go to things like DNA testing, electronic identification (EID) and, most recently, genetic editing. Those are new technologies designed to help ensure the efficient production of a high-quality meat product. This is done for consumers that demand quality, yet are becoming more removed from where and how their food is being produced. While efficient food production has been the main focus for us, a growing segment of consumers want to know how that food is produced. One of the newest technologies can help answer the “how” question – blockchain. After first hearing about blockchain technology two years ago, it seems to regularly come up as the next “big thing” in the beef business. While we discuss this technology at industry events, it still leaves many of us with questions like: • What is blockchain and how could it affect my operation? • Where is my compensation for doing my part in making it successful? Anytime we can share knowledge on a new technology, it helps promote understanding and may help answer questions others have as well. So here is a brief explanation of what blockchain is and the basics of how it may work in the future. One of the simplest ways one industry partner explained blockchain to me is that it is a “digital ledger” managed by a non-biased third party. This digital ledger will track animals from their origin (cow-calf ranches) through to the consumer. Throughout this digital ledger, relevant product information is collected, entered and stored digitally on the same electronic platform as that animal makes its way through the supply chain to the consumer. This 10,000-foot view helps explain the premise

around blockchain as an information-sharing platform, but it leaves out what information is shared and who has access to it. The assumption is that producers at any level would add basic information such as origin, health programs, genetic information and marketing information to the digital ledger. That usually brings forth two more questions: 1) Why record this data? 2) And, who has access to it? To answer the first question, look at the last sentence of the previous paragraph. What do all those things have in common when marketing a product? They help determine value to other segments of the supply chain. With blockchain, this data is stored in a protected, but sharable way. For the second question, the data is stored and managed by a third party that plays gatekeeper of all information. The gatekeeper will protect all submitted information and allow access to the producer who supplied it, as well as to those further down the supply chain who are approved to access it. That may include a customer in a grocery store willing to pay more to know where that steak came from, or in the other direction, a cow-calf producer requesting carcass results from a packer. There’s a lot of information to take in and digest when it comes to blockchain. One of the main points is that the data, whether regarding health, performance or genetics, is now one of the main contributors to a beef product’s value in the supply chain. As we move into the future, we will see more tools like blockchain develop to assist in capturing the value of the practices most producers already do. They just had no way of standardizing and leveraging it to all members of the supply chain. If you want to learn more, study how blockchain is being used in the vegetable industry. Hopefully, this article has helped shine some light on blockchain in the beef industry and how it may look going forward. The industry is making advancements quicker than ever before. Many of the technologies we have already adopted have allowed us to do what we are passionate about more effectively and efficiently, while being stewards of this great land and feeding the world.

Member News Pederson Named Stockmen’s Association Honorary Member Hesperus, Colo., native Lisa Pederson has been an NDSA member and a beef industry expert for more than 20 years. Pederson was born and raised in the high-mountain desert country of southwestern Colorado. Livestock production has always been a part of her life. She is the fourth generation raised on her family’s diversified livestock operation. “I was raised by two parents who were the model of servant leaders,” Pederson said, attributing her early love of and passion for the agriculture industry and working with others to her parents, Brice and Phyllis Lee. “They taught me to give more than you take and try to be a leader

by giving back. I live by the example they set,” Pederson said. Pederson attended college at Colorado State University, receiving bachelor’s degrees in agricultural business and animal science and a master’s degree in farm and ranch management and livestock production. In 1999, Pederson began her duties as North Dakota’s Beef Quality Assurance specialist, making her responsible for all BQA programming in the state. Pederson was instrumental in building North Dakota’s program from the ground up and establishing an educational program for the cowcalf producer. While the program has evolved over the years, the goals have stayed the same: to enhance the reputation and promotion of North Dakota beef by assuring the production of a consistently wholesome and healthy product. The educational

program is a joint effort funded by NDSU Extension and the North Dakota Beef Commission. Since the institution of the program, more than 50 percent of the state’s beef producers have been BQA certified. The certification provides producers with information to help them improve their management practices, which allows them to increase the market value of their cattle and instills confidence in the beef industry. For Pederson, that means working with producers on issues such as improving carcass quality, using better cattle-handling techniques and protecting their herds through the use of herd health practices. “I love teaching,” Pederson said. “I think it’s the best part of my job. That’s why I keep doing this. It’s because I get to work with the greatest producers, the greatest Extension agents, the greatest veterinarians and allied industry partners every day and involve them all in a really good educational program.” Along with her duties as the state’s BQA specialist, she is also a livestock specialist based out of the NDSU Central Grasslands Research Extension Center in Streeter, North Dakota. Lisa and her husband Chad, along with his family, operate Pederson’s Broken Heart Ranch near Firesteel, South Dakota, and raise registered and commercial Red Angus cattle and registered Quarter Horses. They have a 9-year-old daughter, Bricelyn. “Lisa Pederson has made a significant contribution to the state’s beef cattle industry,” said NDSA President Jeff Schafer. “She has been very helpful to the state’s beef industry since she launched the BQA program in North Dakota, which she has built into a valuable resource. She is very deserving of this award.”
