The Roundup Queens I found a treasure when rummaging through my mom’s stuff after her passing this year. She was among the 1949 Roundup Queens – I never knew. These photos (featured on page 8) are from the official rodeo program of the Bozeman Roundup, Sunday, July 24, 1949, in Bozeman, Montana. In order to be a “Roundup Queen,” we know that each one of these ladies was involved in agriculture to some degree at a young age. I decided to do a little research to see where these beauties had gone in their lives. Most had married, many had moved from the community and I had little info to work with without spending six months of digging. Like my mom, several have passed away or they would be about 90 years old. This being a national magazine; I wonder how many of these ladies might have touched your lives. Did you know they were Roundup Queens? I had personal contacts with only a few; three of these lovely ladies were involved heavily in ranching, one worked at the government Agri-

cultural Stabilization Conservation Service, and several were involved in their community’s clubs. Most likely because of their generation, none of these beauties seem to have a web page or platform of any kind; so what did they do to support ag? Did they tell their story? Did they encourage their neighbors to support ag? Did they educate children to know where their food comes from? Were they involved in large or small clubs that uplifted the agricultural community? One would be amiss to say that you are required to wear a physical hat to be an ag supporter; but isn’t it interesting the variety of hats that these ladies were sporting? I’ll bet that each of them wore many “ag-friendly hats” in life. Most of these women I have never met; but I sure want to believe that their legacy and agricultural influence will be remembered. How will we be remembered? How can we touch the lives of others? How many “hats” are we wearing that support the agriculture industry? Will you be a Roundup Queen in life? n

Perspective on the Red Angus Foundation Inc. and Sustainability Research Most RAAA members and Red Angus commercial producers understand the role of the Red Angus Foundation Inc. RAFI has a mission, which is to provide support that enhances the success of the Red Angus breed and its stakeholders. This mission is pursued through investments in leadership development, scientific research and educational opportunities. Most of its leadership development efforts are focused on juniors and involves assistance to the Junior Red Angus Association and an active scholarship program. On the research and education side, RAFI sponsors many types of work. A current project underway in cooperation with Colorado State University is evaluating Stayability and genomics, using whole-genome sequencing. This project can be considered discovery-oriented or “basic” research, because it is not fully known what will

be learned or exactly how the knowledge will be applied in the future. RAFI has also sponsored some simple research or demonstration-type projects during recent years, including LiveWiRED – EPDs in Action, which was completed in 2019, and effectively shown how differences in sire EPDs readily translate into real-world phenotypic and economic differences in Red Angus-sired cattle. Another project presently underway that falls in the applied research category involves the raising and eventual harvest of a test group of Red Angus x Holstein cattle that are designed to demonstrate how Red Angus genetics can successfully be used in the growing beef-on-dairy space to produce valuable beef crosses. To date, Red Angus semen has only been occasionally used for this purpose, and the RAFI-sponsored work underway (which should be complet-

Applied research is raising Red Angus-sired calves out of dairy cows, demonstrating they will produce valuable beef crossses.

Association Commentary – Perspective on the Red Angus Foundation Inc. and Sustainability Research ed early in 2022) is expected to help Red Angus gain market share in the rapidly expanding market for beef semen used on dairy females. RAFI’s future research efforts will soon be receiving a sizable boost via a donation from Charles Jackson III, West Haven, Vermont. Before his passing in August 2019, Jackson designated the Sal Forbes Research and Education Fund in RAFI to receive a generous allocation from his estate. Echo Farms was the name of Jackson’s Red Angus operation, where he also engaged in the sugar business and was involved with Buttonwood trees as a specialty wood source. Jackson was described as a life-long learner, so it’s no surprise he chose to underwrite Red Angus research and advance the boundaries of science. We greatly appreciate his willingness to stand with RAFI and its mission!

12

Sustainability and Future RAFI Research As with many other industries, livestock sustainability has become a big issue, and it’s likely that a significant portion of RAFI’s research efforts in the years ahead will tie directly or indirectly to the sustainability and resiliency movement. There are three key components of sustainability as it is most often defined – economic, environmental and social. The overarching goal is to strengthen all three as related to all aspects of cattle and beef production. Sustainability is a broad-ranging topic and the types of research done in its name during the next decade and beyond are sure to be equally far flung. Red Angus, to date has chosen to

RED ANGUS Magazine n December 2021

internally focus on fertility (initial and sustained) and feed efficiency. Both influence producer profitability and can reduce resource use. It’s not difficult to see how these two fit under the sustainability umbrella, while underscoring Red Angus advantages with hard data. Improved fertility reduces feed requirements for the same number of calves born and subsequently reduces cow depreciation. Improved feed efficiency means less feed needed for the same volume of beef produced. Such gains translate to a smaller environmental footprint for beef cattle, while improving producer profits. Everyone wins. Look for RAFI to become actively involved in a number of projects in both areas going forward. If you’d like to make a donation to support RAFI in building the Red Angus breed, contact the RAAA office. n

Marketing Update by Jeananne Drouhard, Value-Added Specialist

RFID Technology is Worth Considering If you're anything like me, you turned around and all of the sudden, another year is coming to an end. The holiday season is here and I’m sure many of you are also gearing up for your spring calving season. With that in mind, it’s time to start thinking about ordering your value-added tags for your spring 2022 calves and enrolling them in the Feeder Calf Certification Program or Allied Access. As technology in the beef industry grows and the need to continue information sharing enhances, RFID technology is becoming a near requirement for data collection and sharing. EIDs offer many benefits, and those benefits will only continue to grow each year. If you're interested in knowing more about EID buttons and the advantages of purchasing them over dangle tags, I've listed some reasons you might consider moving to EIDs: • Feedyard processing – EIDs rarely are taken out during processing at yards. • IMI Global and other third-party programs require EIDs. • Easy to apply and financially more affordable compared to five years ago.

• Able to integrate EIDs as the calfhood vaccination identifier. • Increases your chances to receive carcass data or other information on the cattle later through the supply chain. • Packers and feedyards are more EIDs offer many benefits are are a near requirement likely to purchase for data collection and sharing. cattle with EIDs • EIDs can create a management tags from outside sources into RAAA piece on an operation for data value-added programs for just $1 per collection. You will find that there is truly a difference in the type of bulls we use in our program. We breed cattle based on how they perform in the real world and are maternally focused and profit driven. We pay close attention to each cow family and how they perform against one another. We structure our breeding program off balance, use multiple-trait selection, and understand the importance of having the right type of cow that thrives in a forage-based environment.

Advantages of the IGS Database by Ryan Boldt, Director of Breed Improvement In 2012, the Red Angus Association of American and the American Simmental Association formed a partnership to begin running a joint evaluation to calculate EPDs. At the time, this was an incredible step forward, because before that, most breed associations had little interest in working together. Since then, more associations have joined this initial partnership and the current International Genetic Solutions multibreed genetic evaluation has been formed. The IGS genetic evaluation contains data from 20 partner organizations from across the globe. IGS has hit a milestone – now surpassing 19 million animals in its database. Wade Shafer, ASA executive vice president, pulled together a powerful example of the power of a multibreed database. In this example, he found that in the IGS database there

were 7,031 Red Angus sires that were used in at least one of the other IGS partner breeds. Within the RAAA database, these sires had 603,993 total progeny recorded. However, when we compare that to the number of progeny recorded in all of the other IGS breed databases, these sires had an additional 1,353,826 progeny records included in the evaluation. This is a 224% increase in the volume of progeny records available on these sires to calculate the EPDs over what would be available in the RAAA database alone. The graphic shows the contribution from each of the partner databases. There is no denying that the lifeblood of any genetic evaluation is data. By participating in a multi-breed genetic evaluation, RAAA has the ability to participate in a genetic evaluation system that has the largest amount of it. By combining information into one database, everyone benefits from the data and more information can be included in each animal’s EPD calculation.

Another added benefit to this evaluation is the common EPD base for each of the participating breed associations. Previously, it was a burdensome process in a crossbreeding system to learn the differences in each of the bases and values for different breed associations. With one common genetic evaluation, this process becomes much more simplified because the EPDs can be compared directly. This makes the comparison across each of the different breed associations much simpler because the EPD values represent the same genetic merit. There are additional benefits to this approach in genetic evaluation as well. IGS was built on collaboration and this also extends to many of the people that work on the genetic evaluation. he collaboration of ideas and expertise across a large group of people allows for the building of a more robust genetic evaluation. Many people can share ideas and experiences that can be implemented within the evaluation. Today, 15 scientists are engaged for different aspects of the genetic evaluation. This group includes breed association staff from several associations, academia and other industry professionals. The diversity of this group allows for many different perspectives and the ability to stay current on the most recent scientific advancements in genetic evaluation.

The IGS database hit a milestone with 19 million animals on record – of which 1.35 million head were sired by Red Angus. 24

As we look to the future, it’s clear that the best path forward is with collaboration. As it relates to genetic evaluation, it allows for the centralization of data and ideas which benefit all those that participate. n

Brown Priest is Empress of Cattle Empire LLC by Teres Lambert for the Red Angus Magazine In his “On the Edge of Common Sense” column, titled, “The Feedlot Woman” penned a year ago, Baxter Black, D.V.M., wrote, “The women working there earn their place.” He pointed out that, “One of the biggest deterrents for women has always been that ground work in the feedlot is a dirty job, fraught with smashed fingers, stepped-on toes and pucky in your hair. But plenty of women can handle it.” Trista Brown Priest, CEO of Cattle Empire LLC, Satanta, Kansas, agrees with Black’s words, adding that, as

CEO of a feedyard, she is happy to no longer have “pucky” in her hair. Family-owned and family-managed, Cattle Empire has a one-time capacity of 51,000 and is located in what people refer to as “the heart of the beef feeding empire.” The feedyard’s home county, Haskell County, ranks second for most cattle of any county in the country, and there’s a key reason for this ranking: Feedyards in Haskell County are within easy shipping distance to the four major packers. The third generation of the Brown family to work at Cattle Empire,

Brown Priest is Empress of Cattle Empire LLC business in 1996. After her grandparents’ death in 2017, her parents bought out her dad’s siblings, went from three yards to one and transitioned to largely custom feeding. Today, the feedyard is owned by Trista, her parents, Roy and Laura Brown, and her sister, Rebecca Brown Wright. Trista and her dad oversee the management side and are on site every day. A glimpse at who owns what pens of cattle and whether pens are sold live or on the grid shows a variety of clients and preferences. “Several customers have been here for 40 years,” Trista said. “Being family-owned, we’re family-focused and big on building long-term relationships. “Some people sell live or in the beef while others want to go with the grid

route – whether it’s our grid or another grid. We sell pens however the people want.” Not everyone who has cattle on feed at Cattle Empire has direct access to cattle. Cattle Empire has a few customers who ask the company to source cattle for them. In these cases, the Cattle Empire crew relies on relationships with cow-calf producers and backgrounders to identify available cattle that should be profitable for their new owners.

When cattle meet these standards, she said they can “put them on feed and they should do great.” Whether she is feeding out her own cattle or those belonging to customers, Trista said one of the biggest challenges associated with owning and

When corn prices go up, the negative impact on cost of gain is felt. “I am always trying to figure out how we can provide the best cost of gain for our customers,” she elaborated. “We are a beef ecosystem, and we cannot survive without each other,” she summarized.

“This applies to all segments of the beef industry – seedstock producer, cow-calf producer, feedyard, packer. In fact, it applies to every business.” As for her second lesson – “You owe it to your customers to do your absolute best,” Trista noted that, as a custom feeder, Cattle Empire must stay focused on what is the best thing for its customers and not take unreasonable risk. She added that a risk that might have been taken when feeding company cattle may not be on the radar screen when it comes to custom cattle. This CEO stressed that she does not like division and finger pointing within the beef industry. She’s all for

Trista said we might all appreciate the other segments of the beef industry if we all listened better and looked for commonalities instead of division. Her eyes got opened regarding the cow-calf segment when she and her husband purchased nine bred heifers. “I can tell you that I gained a whole new respect for cow-calf producers this past year,” she stated. “Those heifers are hard work. I did not know firsthand what cow-calf producers went through before owning these heifers, but I certainly have a small taste of it. Now I am a bit more knowledgeable. Let’s just say that I now truly appreciate what cow-calf producers do.” n

RAFI Auction Provides Trip of a Lifetime for Illinois Couple by Kathy Schierbaum, Tunnel Hill, Illinois Picture this: a cattle drive at the Beckton Ranch in Wyoming. When we saw the auction item listed in the 2020 Red Angus Foundation Inc. auction, it certainly piqued our interest to visit the home of the Red Angus breed’s foundation herd. My husband, Dale, said he would watch the bidding and see if he could buy it for us. Neither of us had ever been farther west than Kansas City, so we thought it would be a great adventure. On the night of the bidding, he called me at work to say we had been the top bidders! Nearly a year later, in September 2021, we were on our way to Wyoming. The drive through the Bighorn National Forest was both beautiful and nerve-racking as we wound our way around the mountainside. Soon, we were at the ranch and greeted warmly by ranch hands Randy Zier and Renee Morris.

The mountainside cattle drive to retrieve the Beckton Ranch herd from government grazing was both treacherous and beautiful. However, the opportunity to see a western ranch in action and to participate in a cattle drive left memories to last a lifetime.

RAFI Auction Provides Trip of a Lifetime for Illinois Couple When Cam Forbes arrived, we wandered around the barns and saw the bulls in their pens waiting for the sale. Dale and I chose our favorite bulls and marveled at the different hay equipment. Such a large operation has quite different feeding processes than our small family farm in southern Illinois. Driving up to the house that was designed by Cam himself, we were greeted by his wife, Trish. We all became acquainted over the nice meal Trish had made. Sitting on the patio, we all visited and watched a gorgeous sunset over the mountains. Early the next morning, we saddled horses and trailed up the mountains – the same nail-biting road I drove down in a car! Had I not been so excited, I might have been nervous about riding in such rough country. Six of us made the trip – Cam, Trish, Randy, Renee, Dale and I, plus one extra pack horse. Randy and Cam, plus the horses, were the veterans of the group. Our mission for two days was to move two different groups of cattle from government grazing back onto the

ranch pastures. We rode all morning on the first day and didn’t see any cattle. After a short lunch break by a pretty creek, we mounted back up and soon got into a group of cows. The horses really perked up and were happy to work. With Cam and Randy directing, the rest of us jumped in to help round up and push the herd to new grounds. It was beautiful riding behind all the red cattle with the mountains in the background. There are always a few cows that run to the trees or just don’t cooperate, but we finally headed them all in the right direction. Our night was spent in an old, two room log cabin built years ago on the mountaintop. A wood fire stove was used to cook steaks and potatoes, and we dipped clear spring water to drink and wash up. Coleman lanterns lit the cabin after dark. We were all exhausted, but reveled in our thoughts of the fun and successful day we had. On the next morning, we were a little slower getting around, but we fired up the old stove again to heat water for coffee. After filling water bottles and packing all

RAFI Auction Provides Trip of a Lifetime for Illinois Couple items back up, we caught the horses that had been grazing around the cabin all night. It was another lovely morning and slightly warmer than the day before. We rode through some of the forests that had burned a few years back and passed another log cabin. This area was dry and dusty. The trail led through scenic pine trees that are much sturdier than midwestern pines. I learned this as I rode into a branch expecting it to yield to me. Instead, I was nearly knocked off my horse. It was quite a wake-up call.

stopped next to the creek for a lunch break before our last trek up the mountain. This last leg of our journey made me appreciate our sure-footed mounts. Areas of the trail were very narrow, and some of it had washed slides off the mountain side. However, a daunting ride made for gorgeous mountain views. At one pasture, we could see nearby Sheridan.

“This was a totally unforgettable experience. We were treated like family, and I will cherish the memories forever.”

The sagebrush released a clean, crisp scent as the horses ambled through, imprinting lasting memories in our heads. We saw more cattle on this day. The steep hills and mountainsides made the roundup even more challenging as we gathered a herd from a large area. This time, we pushed a rather large herd across the mountainside to a clear, cool creek racing over the rocks. After crossing the creek, a nice pasture for the cows to graze appeared in our sight. We

We covered many miles on our two-day ride and encountered lovely country with breathtaking views. We flushed some elk into a hunter’s camp and even caught sight of a rather large black bear. This was a totally unforgettable experience. My deepest appreciation goes out to Cam, Trish, Randy and Renee. We were treated like family, and I will cherish the memories forever. For a girl who always wanted to be a cowboy, this trip was absolutely a dream come true. n

Conditioning Bulls for Spring Breeding Starts in Winter Industry Voice by Purina Animal Nutrition Breeding season may seem like it is months away for spring calving herds. However, winter is a vital time to ensure your bulls will be ready to perform at turnout later in spring or summer. Start the Season at the Right BCS Structure, soundness and fertility are all important factors for a bull’s breeding success, and so is body condition. “Mature bulls should be at a body condition score of 6 by turnout, while yearling bulls should be at a 6.5 BCS,” said Chad Zehnder, Ph.D., cattle consultant and nutritionist with Purina Animal Nutrition.

“Having bulls in proper body condition enhances their ability to perform. Bulls thinner than BCS 6 may have impacted fertility, while over-conditioned bulls have lower libido. During the course of a breeding season bulls typically lose 10-15% of their weight – one to two BCS points.” Yearling bulls need a little more condition because they are still growing, and they tend to be more active during the breeding season than older bulls. Having a little extra condition will help yearling bulls make it through their first breeding easier. For a bull, a one-point change in body condition score equals about

GUIDE TO BODY CONDITION SCORES BCS 1: The cow is severely emaciated and physically weak with all ribs and bone structure easily visible. Cattle in this score are extremely rare and are usually inflicted with a disease and/or parasitism. BCS 2: The cow appears emaciated, similar to BCS 1 described above, but not weakened. Muscle tissue seems severely depleted through the hindquarters and shoulders. BCS 3: The cow is very thin with no fat on ribs or in brisket and the backbone is easily visible. Some muscle depletion appears evident through the hindquarters. BCS 4: The cow appears thin, with ribs easily visible and the backbone showing. The spinous processes (along the edge of the loin) are still very sharp and barely visible individually. Muscle tissue is not depleted through the shoulders and hindquarters. BCS 5: The cow may be described as moderate to thin. The last two ribs can be seen and little evidence of fat is present in the brisket, over the ribs or around the tail head. The spinous processes are now smooth and no longer individually identifiable. BCS 6: The cow exhibits a good smooth appearance throughout. Some fat deposition is present in the brisket and over the tail head. The back appears rounded and fat can be palpated over the ribs and pin bones. BCS 7: The cow appears in very good flesh. The brisket is full, the tail head shows pockets of fat and the back appears square due to fat. The ribs are very smooth and soft handling due to fat cover. BCS 8: The cow is obese. Her neck is thick and short and her back appears very square due to excessive fat. The brisket is distended and she has heavy fat pockets around the tail head. BCS 9: These cows are very obese and are rarely seen. They can be described as similar to eight but taken to greater extremes. They also have a heavy deposition of udder fat. 48

Winter care for herd bulls is essential 100 pounds. And, it takes time to add condition back on bulls who lost weight during the previous breeding season, so starting to prepare those bulls four or five months out is ideal. Adding one pound per day during

the off-season, versus rushing to add on up to three pounds per day as breeding season closes in, can support your bulls’ longevity. “During a 45- to 90-day breeding season, we’re demanding high performance from bulls,” said Zehnder. “If we can have them in the right shape at the start of the season, the better chance they will perform the way we expect.” Keep Bull Nutrition in Focus “A lot of focus is put on feeding the cowherd and making sure they have what they need during the winter, but we can’t forget about bulls,” said Zehnder. “As forages go dormant during the winter or we move to stored forages, supplemental feed may be needed to make up the nutritional gap.” Self-fed supplements can help remove the burden of feeding bulls

50

daily, keep them on a high plane of nutrition and are a great way to achieve added body condition when paired with adequate forage and mineral.

“Start now with bringing your bulls into proper a body condition score so you won’t be playing catch up during the lead into breeding season following spring calving,” said Zehnder.

Using mineral with additional trace minerals ensures ideal trace mineral absorption to support high reproductive expectations.

Fall Calving Herd Advice During the winter, fall-calving cowherds are in their breeding season.

The same strategy can be employed with a self-feeder using supplements. “Using self-fed products eliminates competition between bulls at the feeder and the daily task of feeding,” said Zehnder.

“Although nutritional requirements of bulls in a fall-breeding program should be met by forage and diets being supplied to the cowherd they are serving, bulls should be closely monitored for BCS and injury and replaced if need be,” said Zehnder.

“Reducing competition helps minimize the risk of injury that could set back your bulls for breeding season.”

If you’re feeding your cows to a high plane of nutrition with supplements and mineral, your bulls will get what they need to perform.

Depending on winter forage quantity and quality, a protein tub can aid in bridging the nutritional gap.

Zehnder recommends working with your nutritionist to build a nutrition plan for your bulls. n

Generosity to RAFI Abounds From estates, trail drives, heifer donations, bike rides and birthdays, donations are much appreciated by Bob Hough, Red Angus Foundation Inc. President As president of the Red Angus Foundation Inc., I would like to thank everyone who generously supported RAFI’s efforts to further the breed’s stakeholders through financial aid of junior activities and scholarships, research and education. Through these tax-deductible donations, RAFI is significantly impacting many peoples’ lives and livelihoods. This includes direct support of the juniors, research projects including improving traits like Stayability, demonstrational projects for use of Red Angus genetics in non-traditional markets and development of exciting protocols and educational tools to assure Red Angus remains the most desired commercial females in the industry. There will be a lot of news in the coming year as these research and education projects come to fruition.

The generosity runs so deep by so many people, but I would like to point out just a few to show the diversity of giving. First, I would like to applaud the people who supported at the Diamond Level in the Junior Red Angus Association’s annual sponsor campaign: 3K Land & Cattle, 7K Red Angus, Diamond Cattle Co., Klompien Red Angus, Koester Red Angus and Ludvigson Stock Farms. Of special note this year is a significant sum of money bequeathed from the late Charles Jackson III’s Trust to the Sal Forbes Research Fund. Charles was described as a lifelong learner, who, after graduating from St. Paul’s School in New Hampshire and New York University, as well as attending Wentworth Institute of Technology in Boston, decided his passion lay in farming.

After purchasing his beloved Echo Farm in Vermont, he single handedly repaired the existing buildings as well as constructed a new barn from the ground up. He was highly active in the community. Among his neighbors was the author Elfie Forbes, daughter of breed founders Waldo and Sally Forbes. Elfie maintained a small herd of Red Angus, and Charles was immediately drawn to the breed. He started his own herd and made it a lifelong passion to improve his cattle. His quiet commitment to the breed will now fund research for years to come. This year also continues a long tradition of commercial producers supporting RAFI. The former RAAA Commercial Producer of the Year, Rossi Ranch, bought the donation pick of the herd lot from Lorenzen Ranch that sold before the evening

Quality and Loyalty Are the Bedrock of Successful Marketing RAFI auction in September. RAAA members since 1959, three generations of the Lorenzen family have served on the RAAA board. A commercial producer from the High Plains who prefers to remain anonymous has also been a purchaser of several “pick of the herd” lots in the past.

Similarly, Green Mountain Red Angus donated an antelope hunt sold at this year’s auction.

Illinois commercial producers Dale and Kathy Schierbaum went on their two-day cattle drive in the Big Horn Mountains in September, purchased in the 2020 RAFI auction, which had been donated by the Forbes family. The Forbes family has also donated the pick of their herd in the past. Regarding the trail drive, Dale Schierbaum said, “The two days in the saddle are a vacation we will never forget. We were treated royally by Cam and Trish (Forbes). We moved a herd to deeded land staying in a line cabin along the way.”

This was going to the opposite coast from last year when Dan Stickel’s Cedar Hill Red Angus of West Virginia was the herd from which the donation heifer was selected. These donation heifers have been the bedrock fundraiser for RAFI over the years, so it’s very appreciated.

Special thanks go to McCann Red Angus and Loosli Red Angus, both from Idaho, and Rocking Bar H Ranch, of Washington, for offering pick of their herds at this year’s RAFI auction.

Judy Kay Ferguson remains a stalwart of RAFI, donating as an auction item at this year’s convention fundraiser a “Founder’s Vision” print (1/250) with a special artist’s vignette on that print only, that was the fea-

tured item at the 2004 50th Anniversary Convention auction. Other donations large and small are equally appreciated. Tom Brink’s 60mile, 60-year birthday bike ride was certainly a hit with sponsorships of all sizes. One person even raised money for a scholarship on Facebook for his birthday. Donating stocks has also become an area of interest by some. With the stock market so high, this serves as a way to get the current value of the stock as a tax write-off without incurring capital gains. Again, this is just a thumbnail sketch of a few of the many people who made tax-deductible donations through RAFI. Big or small, they are all equally appreciated. n

ANNUAL PRODUCTION SALE FEBRUARY 8, 2022

SELLING 85 COMING 2-YEAR-OLD BULLS

Why These Women in Agriculture Choose Red Angus As we focus on women in agriculture, we also recognize the young women that are growing their roots in Red Angus. The young women on this year’s JRA board of directors share why they chose Red Angus as the foundation for their engagement in the beef industry. Shannon Jenkins, Missouri For me, Red Angus means family. Our people are wonderful, and the connections I’ve made have had such an impact on my life. You get so much support within the Red Angus breed, and I wouldn’t be where I am today without our junior programs. A great association can only go so far without the cattle to back it, and the Red Angus breed does not disappoint. Currently the industry’s favorite female, Red Angus are sound structured, docile and easy-keeping cattle. No matter the operation, Red Angus keep it smooth sailing. So why Red Angus? When you have the kind of people that we do and the cattle to match, the answer is easy. Peri Andras, Illinois I got involved with Red Angus, especially the junior side, because of the awesome opportunities it provides. Opportunities such as the annual Red Angus Round-Up and Young Stockman Program, which provide hands-on learning about the breed. What I love about Red Angus, besides the cattle of course, are the people. Being involved with the JRA and being on the junior board has taught me many skills that I will be 58

able to take with me throughout life. Some of these skills include leadership, communication and public speaking. I am thankful for the opportunities the JRA and Red Angus have offered me and I cannot wait to see what the future holds for our great breed. Tiffany Watkins, Florida When I decided to get involved in Red Angus, I didn’t know how much of an impact it would have on my life. I got involved in Red Angus programs to learn more about the beef industry, the Red Angus breed, and to make connections within it. Since joining I have accomplished those things and so much more. I have made connections with not only junior members, who have become close friends of mine, but industry people as well. These people have all been instrumental in helping me throughout my Red Angus career. The junior programs have also helped me gain valuable knowledge in many different aspects of the beef industry. This knowledge and these connections will help me to succeed not only in life, but in my chosen profession. Natalie Evans, Illinois Red Angus has impacted my life in such a positive way. I was first introduced to the breed around the age of 12 when my brother first started showing. I wasn’t really interested at first, but then I went to watch him show at the 2016 NAJRAE. From there, I was inspired by all the kids who showed

RED ANGUS Magazine n December 2021

and wanted to be involved. I started showing the following year, and after that have been in love ever since. I began getting more involved in the Junior Red Angus Association by going to Round-Up and Young Stockman, and am now a part of the junior board. I am so grateful, blessed and thankful for the friendships, knowledge and life lessons I have obtained through the breed and those events. Red Angus has influenced me to hopefully pursue a career in agriculture or the beef industry. I can’t thank this breed and the people involved enough for all they have blessed me with. I hope to one day influence younger kids like I have been influenced throughout my time in the association. Emma Ahrendsen, Iowa Red Angus is a place to call home. The friends become family and the cattle are reliable. I have found a home in the Red Angus breed and a family with all of the amazing people I have met along the way. The junior events are a highlight of my year where I am able to make new friends and help young juniors find their homes. Whether it is the junior national show or the JRA Round-Up, my summer is filled with meeting juniors from across the country and competing in contests. Why Red Angus? Because it is a breed that will be there forever. n

Go the Extra Mile with Premium Genetics by Kaytlin Hokanson, Top Dollar Angus Analyst/Field Representative Women have always played a monumental role in agriculture, but over the last decade their roles have grown rapidly. Women bring a new perspective through advocating and promoting the role of ag, but more importantly they are going the extra mile.

I think we can all agree that women serve as a backbone to many operations by helping complete the office work and physical labor required for success. From spending countless hours creating, updating, recording and organizing years of records to working outside in a blizzard with 40 mile-per-hour winds bundled up in four layers of clothing to make sure the livestock are fed, women have always gone the extra mile for their operations. But what’s stopping them from going the extra mile in focusing on the fine details in their genetics?

Jake Feddes • (406) 581-8157 jake@topdollarangus.com Jason Gagnon • (559) 723-6362 jason@topdollarangus.com Andy Albrecht • (402) 922-1000 andy@topdollarangus.com

For years, many operations have done the bare minimum when selling their calves, possibly without knowing the benefits of marketing animals based on genetic merit. They choose the traditional route, causing them to be at the mercy of the markets.

No matter the goal, now is the opportune moment to take the extra time to investigate those poor performing animals and invest in better bulls to breed to better cows in turn achieving your goals quicker! It might even require some DNA testing on your replacement heifer candidates.

Due to drought conditions and the increase in hay prices, we have seen an increase of dispersal sales and breeding stock being sent to the sale barn. Instead of looking at this dispersal of genetics as a setback, we should see it as an opportunity to improve culling metrics, making the most of an operation’s genetic investments. Simply evaluating your bull battery and cowherd to identify the low-end outliers that are holding you back from improving your genetic base can make a big impact.

It’s more critical than ever this year to do the research and follow the trends to capture the full value of your cattle through added value programs that truly give you a leg up when sale day arrives.

It’s no secret that buying elite bulls and females doesn’t come cheap but keep production goals in mind this sale season and allow yourself a chance to think toward the future profit of your calf crop. Believe in and use EPDs. Maybe the goal is to increase weaning and yearling weights, or increase growth and carcass potential to qualify for genetic evaluation programs such as Top Dollar Angus. Select females and bulls who hold superior genetic value. This may enable you to leverage the Top Dollar advantage on future calf crops, allowing you to market your calves at higher prices.

Take the guesswork out of how your cattle are going to perform on the ranch and in the yard. The cost of purchasing superior genetics is significant. However, it is also an investment for long-term genetic and financial success of your cattle. Producers who go the extra mile in their operations can reap more benefits and profits out of their efforts by taking the next step in capturing added value in their genetics. We may think of adding value through health programs, natural, NHTC or other management protocols, but genetics deserve equal attention. Contact Top Dollar Angus today to discuss how to make premium Red Angus genetics part of your herd’s future.

How to Enroll in FCCP and AA 1. The producer contacts the Red Angus Association of America at (940) 226-4762 and answers a short supplier enrollment questionnaire over the phone. RAAA staff will ask general management, animal identification and breeding questions. If needed, the producer may be asked to supply additional documentation on breeding such as semen receipt, lease agreements or information on purchased females. 2. After all documentation is recorded, staff will ship the tags directly to the producer who must tag the calves before they leave the ranch of origin – birth, branding, preconditioning, weaning or before loading on the semi. 3. The producer will receive a customer enrollment agreement to fill out and return to RAAA with a copy of their calving records. 4. Staff will issue the USDAapproved Certificate of Compliance upon receiving the customer enrollment agreement and calving record.

Red Angus Magazine to Receive Facelift in January In 2020, the name of the official publication of the Red Angus Association of America changed to the Red Angus Magazine, formerly known as the American Red Angus Magazine. This change aligned to the rebranding of the association’s image to be more consistent. Magazine Facelift With the upcoming January 2022 issue of the Red Angus Magazine, members and stakeholders will notice a fresh look to the style and fonts on each page. The magazine will still be organized in a similar fashion but with a facelift to modernize its pages. Media Kit Advertisers will also have additional tools at their fingertips with the newly published media kit. The media kit is complete with rates, deadlines, circulation, eBlast information and more, all organized in one location. The rate structure is simplified to give advertisers the information they need at a quick glance when plannng their annual promotion budget. Advertising Rates Magazine advertising rates have remained unchanged over the past 12 years, however, postal rates and publishing

costs have increased. Therefore, ad rates have been slightly adjusted and are reflected in the media kit. Advertisers are still rewarded with discounts for five-time and 10-time advertising commitments. Plus, they can now download ad design templates, watch a short tutorial on ad sizing, and reserve advertising space – all online. The media kit, design templates, sizing tutorial and ad reservation form are online at RedAngus.org/ara-magazine. Member News Jake Feddes Named Top 10 Industry Leader Under 40 By Amy Blum Jake Feddes was named a Top 10 Industry Leader Under 40 by The Cattle Business Weekly this past October 2021. Established in 1945 by Neal Feddes, the Feddes Ranch now has firm roots in the Red Angus industry. Tucked in Montana’s Gallatin Valley, 20 miles west of Bozeman, Jake Feddes carries on the family’s rich ranching history. Feddes became a father during his senior year of high school, and the birth of his daughter, McKenzie, now 20, forced him to taking a running leap into adulthood. Instead of college, Feddes focused on work and family.

He and his first wife married and welcomed son, Hunter, now 15. In those years, Feddes worked part-time with his parents Chuck and Carol on the ranch and in construction. Feddes figured not having a college degree meant he had to work harder than anyone else, and he applied himself to learning at every opportunity. He returned to the ranch knowing there was work for six people, but only pay for two. Without missing a beat, he got involved. Programs like Leadership Montana and Young Cattlemen’s Conference proved priceless as Feddes developed a diverse circle of friends and mentors. Being surrounded by great people is what Feddes credits with success. He cites his dad as his accountability stick and several guys from YCC make up his mentor group.

Innovative thinking and a willingness to learn led Feddes to build a glowing reputation as an independent sales representative for Superior Livestock. Two years ago, his belief in well-mated genetics led Feddes to add feedlot specialist for Top Dollar Angus to his resume. He was also recently named to the Montana Board of Livestock. Feddes isn’t one to rest. He and wife Alyssa purchased a butcher shop in March 2020. The Amsterdam Meat Shop booms with retail sales, online ordering and meat in five Bozeman restaurants with plans for retail growth. It’s the only state-inspected facility within 75 miles.
