The new year is well underway, and cattle producers have once again begun producing the beef that helps feed the world. This cycle begins with a newborn calf on a ranch and ends in the meat case. The opportunity for commercial producers to add profitability exists at every stop in this cycle. To maximize profitability, cattle must be functional, they must grow and they must grade. The most fundamental pillar of profitability is a functional cow. A cow needs to have the ability to have a calf every year, for several years, while also limiting her consumption of high-priced inputs. In this age of high commodity prices and low margins, it’s imperative to keep costs minimal. This should be the bedrock foundation of every producer. Producers have taken great care to select genetics that have an impact on the maternal traits that are required to produce a live calf, but it’s just as important for that calf to have the ability to reach its true growth potential. Genetics selected for higher and higher weaning and yearling weights don’t always pan out, but the calf must have the genetic ability to maximize its potential. Having a calf that grows to its full potential is essential to profitability in a commercial operation. This is easy to visualize and quantify for most producers. Here’s where it gets harder. For a high percentage of commercial producers, post-weaning marketing is where the relationship with their calf crop ends. Calves are sold and shipped to a backgrounding operation or a feedlot. To truly maximize return, ranchers need to provide a product that is predictably profitable. Ignoring the end user’s ability to profit off their investment has a direct, but not immediate, impact on your bottom line. At no point is someone going to invest the same level of capital in a repeat venture that had little to no return. On the other hand, the proven ability to make money on a set of calves allows the buyer the comfort of bidding a little more, knowing there is a better rate of return on said calves. Reputation cattle help alleviate the buyer’s fear of the unknown and result in a higher sale price. It takes a while to earn a reputation for producing profitable cattle in a feedlot setting. This segment of production can be the hardest to quantify for most commercial producers as it’s not an immediate return on investment. A buyer who bids more than market price on a set of calves several years in a row does so because he knows exactly how those calves are going to perform, and exactly what he can spend on them and still turn a profit. Cattle that predictably grade above plant average are rewarded with higher prices at auction. Each one of these steps contributes to the overall return on a calf crop. One is no more important than the others. The Red Angus breed is uniquely adept at doing it all – from its roots as a maternal breed, to the performance represented in Grid Master cattle – producers have proven that Red Angus can do it all. So, when you’re pondering that never-ending quest for profitability, ask yourself three questions: are my cattle functional, do they grow and will they grade? //

Feeder Calf Marketing is Perpetual Event by Tom Brink, RAAA Chief Executive Officer

As the beef industry continues to transition away from being a commodity business and toward the marketing of specification cattle, commercial ranchers are realizing they need to prepare for sale day all year long. Why? Because the feeder calf market rewards cattle that offer more than just a color, weight, sex and head count. If that information is all that’s known about a given set of animals, they are likely to sell at a below-average price. Those who go the extra mile to create and market value-added feeders are most often going to enjoy above-average, if not market-topping, prices. The right information is part of what is needed. However, that information must be accurate and it must showcase positive attributes about the group to be sold. For example, suppose a rancher has worked hard on herd health, both with his cows and calves, over the past several years. He now has a comprehensive health maintenance plan that needs to be shared in detail with prospective buyers when his feeder calves go to market. It would be a lost opportunity if that producer worked diligently on health, then chose not to share the specific vaccine regimen, products used and dates treated with interested bidders. A good health program is a marketing tool, along with being foundational to the productivity of the herd. Another example is weaned versus non-weaned calves. Calves that have been weaned 45-60 days or more typically bring $8 to $10 per cwt. above bawlers. That works out to $40 to $60 more per head, not including weight gain during the weaning period. Thus, it is hard to imagine anyone selling weaned calves and yet not identifying them as such. Value was added during the weaning process, but if the description does not include information highlighting this positive attribute, buyers cannot be certain what they are getting. Thus, the producer may not be rewarded for his efforts. This boils down to some thought time, followed by value-added action and a marketing plan. How are my calves unique? If they are Red Angus sired and have great genetics behind them, that is a promotable value attribute. This attribute is easily identifiable with the Feeder Calf Certification Program tag, and enrollment status should be actively shared with prospective buyers. Is the health program solid? How about natural, NHTC, GAP or Beef C.A.R.E. qualified? Obviously, those are value-added characteristics that will help the producer garner a higher price. Each rancher should take time to consider the unique and valuable attributes of their current calf crop. If there are three or four such attributes, that’s a great start and something to build a marketing program upon. Conversely, if they discover that list is not as long as desired (not enough positive value points to make their animals better than commodity calves), it could be time to think creatively about how to build more distinguishing value into the next calf crop. Marketing value-added calves, as opposed to selling commodity calves, takes significant work and preparation. Planning and adequate lead time are essential. Some adjustments may be required in bull genetics or other important operational inputs. On marketing day, however, these longer term efforts will pay off with a bigger calf check. Because buyers are preferentially seeking value-added over commodity calves, successful marketing for ranchers has become a perpetual event. //

by Nolan Woodruff, Commercial Marketing Coordinator As you sit there thinking about how you’re going to market your calves in the coming months, have you made sure that you’re taking advantage of all the programs and services the Red Angus commercial marketing department has to offer? Due to the time of the year, it’s calves that are on the top of our mind, but we also have options that should be considered for your females prior to breeding. I know some of you are completely done with calving for the year while others are right in the middle of it and some operations haven’t yet had a calf hit the ground, but for every operation, now is a great time to get cattle enrolled in one of the valuable programs the RAAA has to offer. FCCP and AA Producers who are using Red Angus value-added programs like the Feeder Calf Certification Program and Allied Access are taking a step in the right direction for better market access. The

FCCP is for producers using registered Red Angus bulls. This is an age, source and genetic verification back to 50% Red Angus genetics. With recent changes by USDA to the Red Angus schedule GLA, it is important to have your calves enrolled in the FCCP to help qualify for the growing number of beef programs in the industry. The AA program is designed for producers utilizing a planned crossbreeding program. This program incorporates age and source verification for those using more than Red Angus genetics. Through agreements with industry partners, if you enroll your cattle in our FCCP or AA programs, we can help you get started with your enrollment with IMI Global. The inexpensive option of one of the Red Angus value-added programs combined with one of IMI Global’s programs (all using your Red Angus EID) gets sale season started off on the right foot.

But Wait, There’s More ... The Red Angus commercial marketing team is here to help when it comes time to sell your calves. As soon as you know when and where you are marketing your calves, let a member of the marketing team know. We talk with each other to make sure we are sharing the information with any buyers who might be interested. But it is important that we know early so we can give buyers a heads up about the cattle available. This is an option if you are wanting to sell directly off the ranch.

“The Red Angus commercial marketing team is here to help when it comes time to sell your calves.” We will send anyone who has told us they are interested in your direction so you can work out the details. Although the spring season is all about calving, right around the corner is breeding season and it is time to start thinking of how you are going to add value to your herd. She grew up on a non-working farm but developed a love of animals and agriculture through her peers who could always use help from a friend. Through high school, she was involved in FFA and realized she could continue her education further which led her to pursuing a bachelor’s degree in animal science with a livestock emphasis at UW-Platteville. The road after college was a twisted one as she supported her husband as he became an active duty member of the United States Navy. They were stationed in San Diego, California, and Everett, Washington, before finding their home in Aurora, Colorado, where they have been for six years. Registration Department Update – Effective Immediately The RAAA Board of Directors recently added verbiage to the rules and regulations regarding office policies that pertained to foreign imports from other breed associations and the dual registration process. This process allows animals that have been registered in other associations to now have a Red Angus registration number to be used in the registration process for proper pedigree documentation of offspring. The updated rules and regulations have been posted to Redangus.org > Herd Management > Rules & Regulations. Please reference Section D Registration Information > 2. Foreign Import and Dual Registrations starting on page 15. Disposal Codes The registration and breed improvement departments released updated disposal codes in January. Accuracy is defined as the relationship between the animal’s estimated progeny difference and its “true” progeny difference. Accuracy estimates for each EPD range from 0 to 1 but are displayed as 0 to 100 on the RAAA website. The accuracy value that is calculated for each animal is based on the available information contributing to the EPD calculation.

Take for example the two bulls in Table 1. Each bull has a weaning weight EPD of 25, Bull A’s accuracy level is 20, and Bull B’s accuracy level is 80. Based on the possible change table on the RAAA website, we would expect that the true EPD value of Bull A would lie within the range of 12 to 38 pounds (25 +/- 13) and Bull B’s true value would range from 21.7 to 28.3 (25 +/- 3.3).

Possible sources of information about an animal include records on the individual, relatives, progeny and genomic information. As these sources of information become available for a specific animal, the accuracy value for that animal increases. Another possible way to look at an accuracy value is to view it as the reliability or risk of the EPD changing with new information. If an animal has a low accuracy EPD (closer to 0) then the addition of more information about that animal is likely to cause a larger change in that animal’s prediction than an animal with a high accuracy estimate (closer to 100).

Using this table is simple to do and, based on the current information, helps to see where we would expect the value of an animal to fall if infinite information was available.

The idea of the possible change table is that it provides a range where it’s expected that the true value of the prediction will lie within the published possible change two-thirds of the time. There is a possibility that the animal’s “true” EPD value could fall outside of the range calculated using the possible change table. However, it is important to keep in mind that we expect many animals to move in a favorable direction compared to an unfavorable one. So, there is an equal probability that an animal’s progeny will outperform his EPD that is estimated before any progeny are produced.

Another important thing to be drawn from this example is that although these two bulls have identical EPDs currently, there is a chance that with more information, Bull A’s EPDs could get estimated higher and out of the range of Bull B’s estimate as more information became available on Bull A. When using EPDs, it is important to keep in mind that the EPD estimates represent the average difference between two animals if they are mated to genetically similar individuals. Therefore, possible change represents the range that we would expect this difference to fall into. This does not correspond to expecting lower accuracy individuals to have more variability in phenotypic values in their calf crop compared to high accuracy animals. It simply means that with higher accuracy animals, we have more information and have a more reliable assessment that the estimated difference is closer to the true difference for this animal. In summary, EPD possible change values give an estimate based on the current information where we would expect the “true” progeny difference of an animal to lie two-thirds of the time. As more information is available on an animal, we expect his accuracy value to increase and approach closer to the true EPD value for that animal. We also expect that just as many animals’ EPDs will improve as more information becomes available on them as those who do not move in a favorable direction. Additionally, possible change of an EPD does not correspond to variability in phenotypic observations in a calf crop. We would expect to have the same phenotypic variability regardless of EPD accuracy value. When we take this information into consideration, it allows for more effective use of EPDs, which are the best tool available to make selection decisions. //

ENVIRONMENT – The Biden administration has been clear that the climate is a top priority. Recently, $1 billion has been announced for the “Partnership for Climate-Smart Commodities” program. This is designed to invest in demonstration projects to test ways farms of all sizes can profit from the low-carbon commodities they produce through practices that cut greenhouse gas emissions. Last summer, the Senate passed the Growing Climate Solutions Act, which calls for USDA to create certification programs to make it easier for farmers to participate in carbon markets. However, the bipartisan bill has not yet been taken up by the House Agriculture Committee.

ANIMAL IDENTIFICATION – USDA is scheduled to publish a rule to require an electronic readability (EID) component for official identification devices (ear tags) for cattle covered by animal disease traceability regulations starting Jan. 1, 2023. Therefore, mature bulls and cows moving between states would require an EID instead of the currently approved metal brite tags. USDA has said it does not intend to expand the classes of cattle requiring official identification, so feeder cattle will not be affected by the federal rule change.

Ashes to Ashes – Hauling Hay, Cattle and Hope By Teres Lambert for the Red Angus Magazine

When a March 2017 wildfire burned more than 800,000 acres in Kansas and Oklahoma, rancher and trucker Bernnie Smith, Gate, Oklahoma, was among those who lost cows, calves and buildings. Smith, who is also chief of the Englewood, Kansas, volunteer fire department, said the shock of losing all you have hits pretty hard. And, while he and other ranchers were in the first 24 hours of that nightmare, the realization hit that their grass was burnt up and the cows and calves that survived wouldn’t have anything to eat.

“You wonder how the heck am I going to take care of my cows and calves when there is no grass,” Smith said.

While its name originates from “our ashes to your ashes,” the non-profit reaches beyond those impacted by fire. In 2019, Ashes to Ashes delivered donated hay to farmers and ranchers in the Verdigre, Nebraska, area that were suffering from massive flooding.

Smith didn’t have to wonder very long. Truckloads of hay were delivered – hay that was “really appreciated.” “Being on the receiving end of a donation – even when the items are greatly needed – isn’t always easy,” he said. “However, most of us ranchers are pretty self-sufficient and not used to depending on anyone. But this wildfire created a whole new situation. We were in a heck of a bind.” “Knowing that we needed to accept help, we took the help – and we knew that we would return the help when others needed it.” The opportunity to pay it back came just five months later when a fire swept across the Lodgepole, Montana, area. Smith’s two sons and two neighbors sprinted into action. In a short time, a semi load and a gooseneck load of hay – and the trucks and truckers to haul it – had made a run to Bernnie Smith and his son, Levi, along with a group of gracious volunteers, lead relief efforts for farmers and ranchers in their time of need after natural disasters.

In addition to Facebook being a source for getting hay donated and truckers offering their trucks to haul the hay, a plea on Facebook brought in money to help pay the truckers for their fuel. Paying it back resulted in the formation of Ashes to Ashes.

While Smith is often the point of contact for Ashes to Ashes, he is quick to point out that Ashes to Ashes isn’t a one-person operation. Ashes to Ashes comprises a core group of 20 to 30 people – farmers, ranchers, rural firefighters and truckers. In addition to these individuals is what Smith calls “a really big network.” That network includes similar groups in Michigan, Arizona and Oklahoma, plus donors scattered across the United States. “People want to help people in a time of need, but they often don’t know how,” Smith said. “Ashes to Ashes shows them a way to help, and they help.” Smith told of a rancher who donated a lot of hay to the cause. When a driver picked up the first load of hay and thanked the rancher for his donation, the rancher said that his hay wasn’t a donation. Instead, he referred to his offering of hay as “an investment in our future.”

Ashes to Ashes – Hauling Hay, Cattle and Hope “All of us associated with Ashes to Ashes think about what that guy said,” Smith elaborated. “Each donation is indeed an investment in agriculture and the future of the farmers and ranchers who are impacted by a devastating loss.” More Than Hay Only ashes and dirt remained after an unrelenting windstorm sparked widespread, destructive wildfires in central and western Kansas on Dec. 15, 2021. The Four County Fire burned more than 190 square miles, consuming hundreds of cattle and leaving rolling grassland hills charred black. Fields not blackened were covered with wind-blown soot. “It was a blackened desert as far as you could see. All the fences were gone. No shelter belts remained. Everything was burned up,” recalled Dave Dickerson, Bar S Ranch, Paradise, Kansas. “While a majority of us in the area lost a lot of cattle, some cattle were spared – and for that we are grateful. But we were left needing a place for those cattle. We had no place to calve and nothing to feed our cattle.” A cattle friend who heard about the Dickerson’s situation advised him to reach out immediately to Smith. “Bernnie was more than a guy who could make hay deliveries happen,” Dickerson said. “In fact, during our initial call, we didn’t even talk about hay. Bernnie just knew that those of us in the area would need hay. That was a given.

Five days later all of Bar S Ranch’s females and steers had been trucked to new locations. Dickerson doesn’t know how Ashes to Ashes made that happen so quickly, but it did. “Ashes to Ashes people worked for us for about a week,” Dickerson said. “And this was in addition to hauling a pile of hay to the area and helping others as well.

Ashes to Ashes – Hauling Hay, Cattle and Hope “They never charged a dime for the hay or hauling of cattle.” About two weeks after the fire, Levi Smith, Bernnie’s son, visited Dickerson. Smith gave out hugs, words of encouragement and pointed out the progress made. When Ashes to Ashes took root, organizer Smith said the small band of farmers and ranchers had no idea that, in five short years, more than 6,900 people would follow the efforts on Facebook and heed the call in a time of need for hay, trucks, labor and money to pay for trucking fuel. He only knew that 100% of funds raised would go directly to serving those in need. While Smith said the group was focused on providing hay, it wasn’t averse to addressing other needs, such as hauling cattle. “We hadn’t trucked cattle before the Kansas fire. But, in addition to needing hay, trucking was what was needed, so we did it,” Smith said. “Once you’ve been through a fire, you look at life differently. “The group is doing more than just providing hay and hauling cattle. It’s a listening ear and being there for each other. I guess you could say that Ashes to Ashes is hauling loads of hope and investing in our fellow farmers and ranchers.” //

Red Angus Genetics Key to Expanding Family Beef Business By Macey Mueller for the Red Angus Magazine

Nestled in the Blue Ridge Mountains of northwest North Carolina and southwest Virginia, you’ll find a truly diversified farming and ranching operation ranging from Red Angus cattle and Christmas trees to cabbage, pumpkins, corn and more than a half dozen other types of fresh produce. Just as impressively, you’ll find three generations of the Bottomley family working side by side in the multifaceted business to carry on a longstanding legacy of hard work, ingenuity, entrepreneurship and generosity. Co-owner and chief executive officer Mitchell Bottomley grew up working on his family’s dairy and vegetable farm near Ennice, North Carolina. He learned the art of tying Christmas greenery from his grandfather when he was just eight years old, and by the time he graduated high school, he had started his own Christmas tree and seasonal decoration business. After four successful years, Bottomley and his father, Blan Bottomley, combined their resources to become equal partners in Bottomley Evergreens and Farms, and today the company consists of more than 34,000 acres of trees, pumpkins, produce, row crops and pastureland. They are one of the largest suppliers of top-quality Fraser Fir Christmas trees, wreaths, garland and other seasonal decorations in the U.S., and they annually harvest and ship tens of thousands of pumpkins to sell nationwide. Bottomley also owns Bottomley Enterprises, a trucking company with a fleet of 105 refrigerated semis hauling dry freight to the western U.S. and backhauling produce and beef to the East Coast. Although the family has always been involved in the livestock industry, Bottomley has recently taken a special interest in expanding their beef cattle operation. In the past three years, he has grown his Red Angus cowherd to about 1,800 head and runs more than 4,200 cows total.

He was initially attracted to Red Angus’ carcass merit and tolerance for North Carolina’s hot and humid summers and now plans to take the entire herd red in the next few years. The cattle run on a combination of Fescue, orchard grass and white and red clover pastures, and Bottomley sows cover crops like wheat and triticale behind many of his vegetables to graze cattle in the spring. Culled ears of sweet corn not suitable for the grocery store shelves are chopped into silage to supplement his cows, and he also mixes green bean, cabbage and sweet corn scraps with triticale to use in his cattle’s diet. “Using crop residues to feed the cattle reduces waste, is more environmentally friendly and lowers our overall costs,” he said. Bottomley retains ownership of his grass-fed and grass-finished calves and markets them as Natural and GAP4 certified to Pineland Farms Natural Meats. Through a rather aggressive approach using top-notch Red Angus genetics, Bottomley said he has seen his recent yields improve to more than 64% and has been especially impressed with the overall carcass quality of his cattle. “Starting our Red Angus herd with proven genetics helped increase our overall profitability, and we have seen some phenomenal grading with more Prime beef than we’ve ever produced,” he said. “And we feel like we are really getting more bang for our buck with the better yields.” In true entrepreneurial spirit, Bottomley now has plans to build a local processing facility in the next three to five years and create a Prime and Upper Choice branded beef program to market to high-end restaurants. He also hopes to eventually use his existing produce sales channels to offer beef in major grocery chains.

Currently, only about half of Bottomley’s cowherd calves in the fall. As he transitions to all Red Angus cattle, he is also planning to move to primarily fall calving to offset the many spring calving operations in his area and ensure a more steady pipeline of cattle to harvest year round. With so many irons in the fire, it is very likely you’ll find Bottomley in his pickup burning up the roads between his farming and trucking headquarters and regularly checking on his farms and cattle. “My lifestyle is two cell phones and a vehicle,” he said. “It’s easy for me to average 5,000 miles a month on my truck, but I really enjoy being hands-on with all of our companies and would rather be out in the fields or running equipment than in the office.” Bottomley’s drive to build and diversify his business pursuits was instilled by his father, and although Blan passed away in 2015, his legacy lives on in the multigenerational company. RAFI Beef x Dairy Project Shows Value of Red Angus Genetics By Tom Brink, RAAA CEO

More than 2-1/2 years ago, the Red Angus Foundation, Inc. began a project to test Red Angus genetics on Holstein cows for making terminal beef x dairy progeny. Utilization of beef semen on lower-producing dairy cows has grown tremendously in recent years. From 2017 to 2020, National Association of Animal Breeders statistics show a 4 million unit drop in annual dairy semen usage, which was offset straw-forstraw by increased beef semen sales going into the dairy industry. Sexed heifer semen from elite dairy bulls is being utilized on heifers and top-milking cows on dairies across the nation. Replacement dairy heifers are therefore sourced out of the best genetics in the herd. That leaves the lower half to one-third of the cows to be bred to a beef bull with intent of both freshening the cow and producing a terminal calf that has more merit as a beef animal compared to a straightbred dairy calf. Red Angus has not been used extensively in the growing beef x dairy market. Therefore, RAFI believed it would be useful to conduct a simple demonstration project to prove top Red Angus genetics could create high value beef x dairy animals. There is a high probability that the total number of beef x dairy animals produced each year in the U.S. will continue to grow at a fairly rapid pace. Some estimates already place that number at or above 2.5 million head.

Conception rates on dairy cows are notoriously low, commonly ranging from 20% to 40% per AI service. Thus, it takes about three services to produce one pregnancy on lactating females. Some dairies give cows five or more opportunities to conceive. The RAFI project began with donated semen in 2019. The five Red Angus sires used in the project ranked high for growth and carcass traits; top 9% for the breed’s GridMaster index (on average), top 16% for both Marbling and Ribeye Area and the top 14% for Carcass Weight. Cows were inseminated during October and November at the DeJong Dairy in Visalia, California. Resulting calves were born from mid-July to mid-August 2020 and were raised in hutches until approximately 75 days of age, then graduated to pens with like-age and size calves at DeJong’s until they reached 5-1/2 months of age. Calves were then relocated to the Guess Cattle Company grow yard in Tulare, California, on Jan. 12, 2021, with an average weight of 427 pounds. The 46 head of Red Angus x Holstein crosses, including both steers and heifers, were not implanted, but still gained 3.23 pounds per day in the grow yard. They weighed 800 pounds on May 11, 2021, and grow yard owner, Roger Guess, said typical gains for beef x dairy cattle at this stage run from 2.8 to 3.0 pounds per day. Thus, the Red Angus-sired group competed

well. Feed conversion was also favorable at 5.41 pounds of dry feed per pound of live weight gain on a higher roughage, grower-type ration. The group arrived at Magnum Feedyard, Wiggins, Colorado, on May 22, 2021, for finishing. They went right on feed and experienced few health issues and zero death loss. Daily feed intake averaged 32.9 pounds per day (as fed basis), which would be considered near normal levels for cattle with similar in weights. It should also be noted that these cattle were managed conventionally with implants and ionophores. The first draft of the largest and most visually finished cattle shipped and harvested on Nov. 23, 2021, after 196 days on feed. This group proved to be somewhat under-finished, with an average backfat of 0.40 inches. Ideal fat endpoint for beef x dairy animals is considered to be 0.50 to 0.55 inches. There were no Yield Grade 4 carcasses in this draft of mostly steers, and their average carcass weight was 932 pounds. Some of the carcasses did grade Select, but that appeared to be mainly related to their lighter finish. Even so, this draft did have 43% upper two-thirds Choice carcasses. The second group did better, grading 100% Prime and Choice. Prime grading carcasses represented 10% of the total, and upper two-thirds Choice accounted for an impressive 53%. Average backfat hit the sweet spot at 0.52 inches. Mean carcass weight was 926 pounds, with more heifers in the mix and 49 more days on feed. Total days on feed was 245 for this draft. No Yield Grade 4s in this group either. There is more analysis to do on the data before a final summarization can be compiled. That said, this initial review is favorable and strongly suggests that Red Angus genetics can be used beneficially to produce fast-growing, high-grading beef x dairy cattle. //

Key Factors in Successful Feeder Calf Marketing By Nate Smith, General Manager Top Dollar Angus, Inc. Of all the important events for commercial cattlemen, none is bigger than the annual marketing of their feeder calves. It is the event that dictates whether their planning and year of hard work paid off. At Top Dollar Angus, we regularly get questions about feeder calf marketing, such as: “What are the cattle feeders asking for?” and “How do we increase our sale price?” It’s therefore appropriate to identify factors that have significant influence on the outcome of this all-important event. Let’s look at common characteristics that impact the value of feeder cattle and calves in today’s market from both a buyer’s and seller’s perspective. First, we must recognize that there are many contributing factors in establishing a price for feeder cattle in general. Supply and demand of finished cattle, weather, futures prices, interest rates, forage availability and how and where the cattle are marketed all carry an impact. However, since these elements are not transferable from one sale transaction to the next, we will not speak to them directly. The factors that a producer can control are what’s worth emphasizing. Until recently, the only factors from a cow-calf producer’s perspective when marketing feeder cattle were health, uniformity and hide color. Please notice that weight is excluded here. Weight matters, but the potential to efficiently add quality pounds carries relevance in feeder cattle valuation along with their weight at time of sale. These are all factors potential buyers can evaluate with relative ease when cattle are presented on sale day. They are visual attributes. While still foundational principles when establishing feeder cattle value, today technology and the ability to verify such information has brought about new attributes and descriptors which affect how value 80

is established. To better understand these price-influencing components, let’s look at the role they play and how verification of cattle characteristics has evolved. When speaking to our cattle feeding partners, the first aspect many of them speak to is the expected health of a set of feeder cattle, especially on younger and lighter animals. Health and the way it’s evaluated has evolved to help bring the most value to both the producer and purchaser. The health of a particular set of calves has always been one of the biggest drivers of value in the marketing system and rightfully so, because the cost associated with an animal fighting a health issue can quickly override all other factors in determining an animal’s profitability. In times past, calf health was verified verbally during marketing based off of data points such as an approximate date weaned and that “shots” were given. Now buyers regularly look at the specific dates the health program was implemented and like to have the verification of the regimen by a DVM. Such evolution to more detail is due to the creation of health certificate programs that are specifically designed to meet specific criteria for which feedlots have asked. Whether it is an all-natural program, NHTC or a VAC 45/VAC 60 program, the health status of a group of feeder calves heavily influences the price a buyer will pay. Just as health plays a major role, uniformity and group size are additional primary factors cattle feeders say are important. What are they saying? Feeders tell us that the more consistent a group of cattle is the more incentive they have to purchase those cattle. Every time a feeder must sort animals to create a similar group, labor costs increase. This reasoning, coupled with values gained when be-

ing able to market a consistent group when sending fed cattle to harvest, is why uniformity carries so much emphasis in their price appraisal when cattle sell. The third big factor is genetic potential and the value that feeders place on knowledge of genetic background and the potential for growth and carcass excellence. Verification of genetics in commercia feeder cattle has evolved rapidly in recent years. Genetic potential, like health, influences a sizable portion of an animal’s ultimate profitability. Hide color was used in the past as an attempt to predict feeding efficiencies and quality grade when marketing on a grid. However, with the information technology available today, feeders can leverage real genetic data to improve their profits, rather than relying on hide color alone. The insight genetic metrics provide has led cattle feeders to increasingly seek such information. Expect them to do so to an even greater degree in the years ahead. //

Building a Family Legacy Lois worked alongside her husband, Ron, on the ranch. Ron died in 2020 but his spirit lingers as the family continues his life work. The family also includes daughter Kristin Harms, her husband Jake, and their children Hartley, Londyn and Holton; and son Eric Payne, his wife Megan, and their children Presley and Kylie. Eric and Megan live and work in Aberdeen. Besides the family, the ranch staff are considered essential to the operation. Peggy and Craig work on the ranch, Peggy as office manager, handling the bookkeeping, cattle record entry, sale clerking and hospitality. Jake manages cattle feeding and contributes to the sales and cattle handling. Kristin helps in the office and manages marketing as far as catalogs, ads and social media. And Lois helps anywhere she can.

Kristin said, “Jake and I are very fortunate to have the opportunity to work alongside family every day doing something that we love and supporting an industry that is essential to our nation. We get to bring the kids with us every day, so at any given moment there are three, sometimes four generations on the ranch. Bieber Red Angus is truly a family operation, and I think that’s what makes it successful.
