Don’t Cut Corners Now or Later By Jim Yance, Area 8 Director
Howdy from “Deep in the Heart of Dixie!” It has been a long, miserable winter for most of cattle country; just knowing it’s April is a blessing. With that being said, spring calving is underway or will be starting soon. It’s a busy time of year with a lot of things going on and tasks to keep track of. As the main topic of this issue is cow herd reproduction, let’s dive right in! The old saying “Start strong, finish strong,” rings true and is well-known in the cow herd. If we start off with heifers and cows in good body condition, we increase the opportunity to hit the targets of an above-average breed up in a few weeks. Nutrition is the foundation for everything that is done in the cow herd. Without a good mineral and feeding program, nothing else works as it should – from the vaccines used to the cow’s ability to return to estrus post-partum in a shortened interval. Considering the way inputs have increased, it’s easy to try and figure out ways to cut corners and save money but it’s hard to figure out what can be cut without being detrimental to the productivity of the operation. Keep this in mind as plans are being made later this spring – most all market analysts are predicting higher calf prices for the next few years. If this holds true, what will a calf be worth? Is it worth sacrificing a 10-15% reduction of the calf crop to stop feeding minerals or start using a cheaper mineral formulated for something other than a beef cow? Meanwhile, what will be the long-term effects of shorting the cow herd of minerals, supplements, parasite control, etc.? While planning for the future, we can learn from our past. One way to benchmark how things went last breeding season is to figure the calving distribution of the herd. This is easy to do and allows for a producer to analyze from year to year the production of the cow herd and make necessary adjustments going into another breeding season. National benchmarks suggest 63% of the cow herd should calve in the first 21 days of the calving season, 87% by 42 days and 96% by 63 days. Extending the calving season beyond these parameters compromises a producer’s ability to capture the maximum value for a set of calves under most management scenarios.

Additionally, the primary factor associated with calving distribution and profitability is weight. We all know the cows that calve earlier wean heavier calves. Several experiments have evaluated calf weaning weights from calves born in the first calving period through the third calving period, as would be the case in a typical operation with a three-month breeding season. This shows the average weight difference and range for each calving period – essentially every cycle that a cow remains open costs approximately 40 pounds in weaned calf value. It is important to consider that a cow who breeds and subsequently calves every year in the first calving period has the same yearly cost as a cow that calves in the third period, yet the former will wean, on average, a calf that is 80 or more pounds heavier at weaning. Moving forward with breeding decisions this spring, there are many

“A cow who breeds and subsequently calves every year in the first calving period has the same yearly cost as a cow that calves in the third period.” ways to become more efficient when it comes to the herd’s reproduction management. Estrus synchronization is one of the most under-utilized tools. Implementing artificial insemination is another resource that’s not new to cow-calf producers but still is only used by about 11% of cattle producers annually in the United States. By incorporating the use of these management tools, one can tighten up calving intervals, add more weight to the calf crop, cut down on extra labor
and long hours during calving season and get more heifers born earlier in the year (which will in turn produce better replacement heifers that can be sold for more money or bred back and retained in the herd). My advice is don’t sacrifice the cow herd by cutting out the things that matter most! If the belt needs to be tightened, make a list of things and study it from top to bottom. It may be as simple as going home for lunch or packing a lunch rather than eating out every meal. Or perhaps not trading trucks this year or going on that Disney World vacation till things get better. It’ll be the things that are not popular with others that can be cut out but just might end up making you the most money. Just a thought: small changes can make for big improvements! Hoping for warm, sunny days with pastures full of calves running in knee-deep grass! //

RED ANGUS Magazine | April 2022
By Tom Brink, RAAA Chief Executive Officer Red Angus is a high stayability breed. When compared to other beef breeds, Red Angus and Red Angus-influenced females compete very well for sustained fertility and longevity. That is important in the commercial cow-calf business, because depreciation is the enemy of ranch profitability. Economists sometimes call cow depreciation a “silent thief.” It quietly steals from the bottom line, though is often little noticed by managers. Females depreciate because their cost as a replacement heifer is higher than their value as a cull cow. The goal, therefore, is to put as many productive years as possible between when a heifer is added to the herd and when she is culled as an older female. Doing so reduces annual depreciation costs, because the total depreciation of a given female is spread out over more years. Let’s look at a simple example of how this works. The table below assumes the cost of adding a bred replacement heifer to the cow herd is $2,000, with that amount being equal to her market value. If this heifer was raised for less than that amount, but her value if sold is $2,000, the higher figure should still be used in estimating depreciation costs. That’s the opportunity cost of keeping her at home versus marketing her to someone else. Notice next that the assumed cow salvage value is $1,000. Therefore, the total depreciation females experience while transitioning from being a replacement heifer to becoming a cull cow is $1,000 ($2,000 - $1,000 = $1,000). That is a sizable dollar amount, and the last thing any producer wants is to have a female fall out of the herd after one or two calves. When that happens, the entire $1,000 in depreciation must be absorbed in 1 year (if only one calf is produced). Or in the case of two calves, the depreciation cost is still painfully high at $500 per year for the young female that failed to breed back for her third calf. The best word to describe either of those outcomes is familiar: WRECK, and an expensive one at that. The table uses a more moderate scenario, comparing cow depreciation when average calves per lifetime is either four or five, before the typical cow in the herd must be culled. That one additional calf reduces annual cow depreciation by $50 per head per year. No doubt, we would all rather have another Ulysses Grant $50 bill in our pocket versus having that money vaporized into thin air with an open cow that is only 5 years old.

Association Commentary: Reduced
Depreciation Through Increased Stayability
Many factors affect how long a cow stays in the herd. Some are management related, while others are influenced by genetics. Nutrition and herd health are of the utmost importance. The industry learned decades ago that starving a cow toward greater profitability rarely works. Crossbreeding can help reduce cow depreciation. Crossbred cows tend to last longer, breed back better and ultimately produce up to 25% more pounds of weaned calf per cow lifetime compared to straightbred cows. Breed selection is obviously important when designing any commercial breeding program. Using longer-lasting, female-oriented breeds like Red Angus certainly makes sense. Red Angus also offers a time-tested Stayability EPD, which is proven to work, though the heritability of
Crossbred cows tend to last longer, breed back better and ultimately produce up to 25% more pounds of weaned calf per cow lifetime compared to straightbred cows. Stayability as a trait is low at approximately 0.15. The other 0.85 or 85% is determined by management and environment. Daughters of sires in the Red Angus breed’s top Stayability quartile pro-
duce 1.36 more calves per lifetime, on average, versus daughters of sires in the bottom quartile. Selecting higher Stayability EPD sires will tend to add cow longevity to the herd and can therefore be helpful in reducing deprecation expenses. //
Dr. Lindsay Upperman Joins the Red Angus Association of America By Brandi Buzzard Frobose, Director of Communications, Red Angus Association of America The Red Angus Association of America welcomes Dr. Lindsay Upperman to its breed improvement department as a beef cattle geneticist. Upperman will work with the director of breed improvement to develop and deliver genetic selection tools, conduct research projects focusing on genetics and phenotypic information and develop educational Upperrman programs that empower RAAA members and commercial producers to improve the genetic merit and quality of their cattle. “We are pleased to add Lindsay to the breed improvement department. Her experience will be a benefit to our members and commercial producers,” said Ryan Boldt, RAAA director of breed improvement. “Lindsay’s commitment to working to provide selection tools that will improve the commercial beef cattle industry aligns perfectly with the RAAA’s core policies,” he added. Upperman earned a bachelor’s degree in animal science from Kansas State University, her master’s degree in animal biology from UC Davis 12 RED ANGUS Magazine | April 2022
and her Ph.D in animal science with a focus on animal breeding and genetics from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. During her academic career, she was selected for the All-American Collegiate Livestock Judging Team and won the BIF Roy A. Wallace Undergraduate & Graduate Scholarship as well as the Baker/Cundiff Beef Improvement Essay Contest. Prior to joining RAAA, Upperman worked at the American Gelbvieh Association as the performance programs coordinator. “I am excited to utilize my current skill sets in helping to advance genetic progress in the Red Angus breed, along with gaining new experiences, knowledge and a further appreciation for a breed that keeps the commercial producer at the forefront,” said Upperman. “I look forward to meeting the members involved in this association and welcome future discussions for developments in breed improvement.” Outside of her career, Upperman enjoys being outdoors including; hiking, kayaking and fishing, and is an active member of her local church congregation. Upperman started in her new role on March 7 and can be reached at lindsay@redangus.org or 940-387-3502, Ext. 29. //

Marketing Update
Mom is Still Important By Cale Hinrichsen, Commercial Marketing Specialist We have all heard the phrase before, “My calves did not turn out and it is the bull’s fault,” or “The bull I bought did not turn out like I thought he would.” However, the bull is only 50% of the equation and while a great Red Angus bull can make all the difference in any cattleman’s operation, the female still makes up the other 50% of the equation. While choosing the right bull is vitally important, one must not forget about mom. As producers, we work hard to plan, create and build the best herd we possibly can. When selecting the most-favorable Red Angus females, we need to make sure we are using a combination of tools available. Red Angus females are proven to be

maternal, profitable and sustainable. It is no secret that in order to create long-lasting, functional females, they first must be built correctly from the ground up. Structural correctness is important when deciding which females to retain. Foot scoring is an invaluable tool producers can use to start the analysis of structure in the herd. With foot scoring, a producer can start to eliminate an industry-wide issue of foot problems. Another viable trait to consider is udder condition and teat design. Smaller, equally placed teats are ideal in regard to the calf being able to nurse easily and the cow having fewer problems in terms of udder longevity. Utilizing these visual tools, as well as overall phenotype, gives producers a starting point in the process
of deciding which females to keep. Data can also be a useful tool to producers for decision-making for their herd. Through Red Navigator, commercial producers gain greater insight into the genomic makeup of their females. Females that have 75% or more Red Angus genetics can have an entire EPD database created. This data is compared to thousands of other Red Angus females to provide a more accurate percentile ranking by incorporating traits from Red Angus’ HB, GM and ProS indices. During a Learn From the Best session, Brian McCulloh of Woodhill Farms shared a spreadsheet he uses with all his females’ EPDs in it. He wants each of his females to be in a certain percentile for

Mom is Still Important each EPD and he has set guidelines for the cow herd. them had bad dispositions. However, when he got to Red Angus, he smiled and said he always enjoyed how easy going and well-mannered they were. The moment their calves hit the ground, they were licking them and working hard to get them going.
Red Angus females are in high demand this spring, and for good reason. They are known for being efficient, fertile and offering longevity while still retaining a docile disposition. Recently, I had a conversation with an experienced producer who learned I was with Red Angus. He began to tell me about all the different breeds of cattle he had owned throughout the 1980s and 1990s. He rotated through each breed in detail about how they performed in southwest Oklahoma.
The Red Angus-influenced cattle he raised performed well in his Oklahoma environment. This may sound like the perfect situation for anyone raising cattle. However, data also shows the added value Red Angus females command in the market. Data from Superior Livestock shows Red Angus females bring up to $11/cwt more than all other breed types, further solidifying them as the most favorable female. Furthermore, the data also shows Red Angus females capture an average of $140 more than Angus-sired females.
There were several common themes throughout this conversation including: this breed did not gain enough, that breed lacked maternal ability and all of
These females have a lot to offer producers, and the RAAA offers several marketing programs to help producers market their cattle. Through eight years

of Superior Livestock Auction data, analyzed by Kansas State University, Red Angus females tagged with the Feeder Calf Certification Program yellow tag consistently brought $5 more per hundredweight than their non-tagged counterparts. The tag is only 99-cents and can be used as a regular identification tag for each animal in the program. Both the FCCP yellow tag and Allied Access green tag verify age and source, further contributing for marketability to Red Angus offspring. Using Red Angus marketing programs, data analysis and visual inspections, your calves will be well equipped to capture maximum value when it comes time to sell. Starting with the most functional, structurally correct females, combined with a balanced number profile and a strong Red Angus marketing plan, assists producers to be profitable and sustainable. Remembering that mom is a major part of that formula will increase the success of the producers and allow the breed to gain greater market share. //

Category 3 - Less than 87% Red Angus or Angus Q: “What is the fastest way to get my cattle registered?” A: RAAA offers a couple options to register cattle, but the fastest way to get animals registered is to complete the registrations online. Users will need to be a regular or junior member of the association to obtain a login and register cattle. Users can find tutorial videos on the Red Angus YouTube channel that will provide step-by-step instructions on how to input the data. Member service specialists are also happy to assist over the phone. Q: “How do I know if I’m up to date on my reporting?” A: During the fourth quarter, RAAA sends out a calendar with all important reporting requests and deadlines. Staff recommends checking each month to make sure no deadlines are coming up. If a member did not receive a calendar and would like one, please call the RAAA office and staff will send one out. This schedule is also available in the Rules and Regulations under THR Calendar. To review which animals still need to be reported on for 2021 go to Reports/ Downloads, select the group Spring No Progeny_2021 > pull Herd Inventory Report > download file to review. Q: “How do I correct a mistake I made on an animal that’s already registered?” A: Members can start a manual job online and enter the calf’s registration number in the Reg Number column. Once it pulls up all the calf data, the member is able to make any adjustments necessary from the data that was previously entered. If the animal has already been transferred, the correction will need to be sent to the office to be completed by staff. //

Data in a Genetic Evaluation – Part 1: Pedigree By Ryan Boldt, Director of Breed Improvement
Grand Progeny 0.25
This article will be the first in a threepart series about different data types that are used in a genetic evaluation and the importance of each. For this article, the focus will be on pedigree information and why this is important in EPD calculations. This will also include some historical information, as well as how this data is incorporated into the evaluation currently. When EPDs were first being developed, they started as within-herd estimates of genetic merit. The reason being twofold: 1) the computers that were available at the time were not able to include all the pedigree relationships among animals and 2) historically, herds were not well connected to one another. The advent and increased use of AI in the seedstock industry allowed for more comparisons to be made, which in turn led to more sires being used in multiple herds, thus linking the herds together. The original models used in genetic evaluation were known as sire models that related observations to sires and fit additive relationships among sires. One disadvantage to this approach was that only animals that were used as sires were able to receive EPD values. To overcome this problem, technology advanced to create a methodology that allows for the fitting of relationships of all animals in the pedigree. This type of model is known as an animal model, and this is still the basis and type of model that is used for genetic evaluation today. In the genetic evaluation, the pedigree is important because it allows for the connection of data and information among animals. There are traits that have genetic evaluations conducted in which the phenotypes can only be recorded on one sex, like heifer pregnancy. In these situations, since

bulls don’t have phenotypes that can be submitted, the evaluation relies on their relationships to females that have this information recorded to produce EPDs for those traits. Based on pedigree data alone, there are standard relationships that are fit based on this pedigree information. Figure 1 illustrates the relationships that are assumed among different individuals. The figure shows that as the number of generations increase, the average relationships between the individuals decrease. However, by using these relationships genetic evaluations can harness much more information on relatives of an individual to calculate the EPD values, thus allowing the EPDs to be more accurate for each individual because more information is available to make the prediction. Technology for increasing pedigree accuracy has also improved over time, specifically in the form of DNA parentage tests. These tests are now commonly run on animals’ DNA to help confirm that the pedigree is correct. The RAAA also has in its rules that any sire of a registered animal must have been confirmed to his sire before calves can be registered. This rule allows for accurate pedigree information and improves the genetic evaluation overall. This technology has been embraced by Red Angus seedstock members as the percentage of non-parent animals that have DNA submitted for parentage testing increased 160% from 2015 to 2020. This increase in use of the technology has continued to pay increased dividends for improving the accuracy of EPD information. In this example the larger percentage increase was for bulls, showing that the RAAA seedstock producers are committed to providing the best information to their commercial customers. The inclusion of pedigree information is vital to genetic evaluation. It allows for the identification of different animals, as well as helps link multiple sources of data to each animal’s EPD calculation. By doing this, it allows for EPD information that is comparable across the entire Red Angus population to allow for comparisons to be made across herds. In the next part of this series, the importance of phenotypic data collection and submission will be discussed. //

Build Your Junior Program with Communication
By Kim Heller, RAAA Director of Education and Junior Programs It is instrumental to keep your state or regional association updated on current and upcoming events. Here are some ways you can stay connected with your members at a state or regional level: Website Although creating a website involves the most work, it can be very effective for relaying information to membership. A website is often the first thing a member or potential member would search for and can display much more content compared to social media. Use your social media outlets to drive viewers back to the website for the information. Facebook Use the power of social networking to connect and promote your association. Create a Facebook page using the following link: facebook.com/pages/ create • Post at least twice a week or as often as you can to ensure consistent, effective communication. • Use photos or videos to grab reader attention as well as maximize the algorithms used by Facebook. • Create content that people will Like and/or Share which expands your reach. • Have multiple Admins and/or Editors to allow additional people to post as the association. • Tag JRA board members and state junior leaders in the posts to expand their reach. 30 RED ANGUS Magazine | April 2022
Instagram Instagram is great for posting pictures and quick text reminders and tends to cater better to a younger audience who may not be as active on Facebook. To start using Instagram: Download the Instagram app for iOS from the App Store, Android from Google Play Store or Windows Phone from the Windows Phone Store. • Instagram can be viewed and posted to from both a computer and a mobile device. • Use hashtags to increase the chances of your posts reaching viewers. • Post content that will grab the attention of viewers as they quickly scroll through their feed. Blog Blogs are an opportunity to build relationships through stories, pictures, recipes, and more. Blogger.com is integrated with Google and is quite easy to use to create and manage a blog. • Use variety in your posts to create interest in more of your readers. • Link your blog to auto-post to your Facebook page. Electronic Newsletter Sending out an electronic newsletter with updates and current events is a great way to reach the membership. Short enough to scan through and at the convenience of their email inbox, this form of communication is easily accessible. Once a month is likely often enough to send out a newsletter.
Mailchimp.com offers free services with easy drag and drop content creation. • This requires an up-to-date email contact for members; you’ll want to continually update the list. • Use the newsletter to direct people to your website for forms and information. Mailed Newsletter Sending out a newsletter physically through the mail annually or biannually can potentially have a greater impact since a member is able to see a tangible copy and may hold onto it for an extended period of time. Not to mention, email can sometimes be tricky with spam filters and other technical difficulties. • Newsletter templates exist in Microsoft Word and Publisher that allow you to easily create a professional looking document. General Tips • Engage junior members to assist in creating content for member communication. Have them take photos, write stories, create posts, etc. The JRA board of directors can be a resource to you as you seek to improve your Member Communication. Contact information for the board can be found at https://redangus.org/jra. //

Working As One
Idaho Ranchers Sync Cattle with Nature to Improve Profitability By Macey Mueller, for the Red Angus Magazine Sometimes less really is more, as is the case on Pothook Ranches located near Salmon, Idaho, where Dave Ellis and Traci Bignell use a holistic approach to run their nearly 100 Red Angus cows and manage their private and public forage resources. Cows at Pothook Ranches receive very little supplementation, calves are not implanted or vaccinated except for the required Bangs vaccine in heifers and very few animals are treated with antibiotics. Instead, Ellis focuses on a systematic rotational grazing program to provide quality forage throughout most of the year and relies on his herd’s inherited immunity and reduced stress to stay healthy. “I don’t do any pour-on insecticide treatments, injections or ear tags of any kind,” he said. “I’ve been doing this for a long enough period of time with these cows and have seen that their immune system is so much stronger than ones pharmaceutically supported.
“It was encouraging because I’ve been selling for so many years, and buyers know my calves and what they can do,” he said. “Because so many buyers are going to administer a Dave Ellis and Traci Bignell met through a shared round of shots interest in conservation and can often be found as soon as the working side-by-side at Pothook Ranches. calves get off the truck, they know mine are like a blank slate and they’re going to get a good immunity response from them.”
“These cows will slick off faster in the spring, they gain body condition quicker and they’re just healthier. I have less everything in these cattle because we’ve built an immune response into them.”
To be successful with this approach, Ellis has worked hard to make cows that fit the rugged environment they live in. Much of Ellis’s grazing land is located in and around the Beaverhead Mountains on a combination of owned and leased ground and two Bureau of Land Management allotments. The cattle run on rough terrain at an elevation of 4,000 to 6,000 feet year-round, and he relies on smaller framed cows that are easy fleshing and good mothers.
Although it may sound unconventional, Ellis’s approach has paid off. Late last fall, a group of his steer calves topped the market for their weight class during a weekly sale at Twin Falls Livestock Commission.
“As a cost management tool, I need a cow that can take care of herself and make a living on her own without a lot of handouts from me,” he said. “This is very rough country and we get some pretty severe winters, so most of my labor

Working As One is allocated to grass management and I support those cows by making sure they’ve got a good forage base to go onto every time I move them. “But then it’s up to them to make good use of that and to raise a calf off of it.” Keeping detailed records and knowing which qualities are best suited for the rough east-central Idaho landscape, Ellis is able to retain heifers each year that are acclimated and ready to go to work. He is very strict about culling heifers out of cows he has to assist, and he selects for short but thick-bodied females that will weigh 950 to 1,050 pounds as mature cows. “That’s the kind of cows that have to go out here, especially on this winter range, to maintain a pregnancy, come back in and still build enough condition back that she can calve in May with a 5 or 5.5 body condition score,” he said. “Don’t get me wrong, I love red cattle and I’ll always have them, but I have some concerns with some of the body types and the phenotypes of the cows we’re producing in the breed because we tout them as functional, easy fleshing, moderate framed cattle, but in my world, the cattle that they’re calling those things are way too big and high maintenance for what this country will allow. “I’m very in tune with trying to make a cow that will fit this environment and not the other way around, which is a contemporary model that is often followed.” To produce the type of cows that work best in his operation, Ellis said he analyzes roughly 2,000 to 3,000 bulls to replace two or three of his sires each year. He looks specifically for frame score 3 to 4 bulls to keep his overall cow size smaller but admits they are getting harder to find, and he pays close attention to the Red Angus HerdBuilder Index, which places significant influence on economically relevant traits in profitable replacement heifers and also maximizes the value of non-replacement marketed progeny. “I look at a tremendous number of bulls to find ones I think are going to help me build the kind of female that will be functional and fertile in this environment with some soundDave Ellis places a significant emphasis on forage management as he rotates his cattle between dry uplands on native type forages and irrigated ground near his home.

Pothook Ranches calves are branded and castrated in late June. ness and longevity I can depend on,” he said. “I want a good Marbling score and Rib Eye Area, but I am more focused on looking for double digits all the way through Heifer Pregnancy, Calving Ease Maternal and Stayability, which is not always easy.” In an effort to better use available forages to meet his cows’ nutritional requirements throughout the year, Ellis starts calving about April 20 and is done by June 10. The calves are branded and bull calves are castrated during the last weekend in June, and once healed, the pairs are turned out on an irrigated piece of ground that will support them through the breeding season, which usually lasts from July 12 through August 20. “That’s only one and half heat cycles for those cows, but it’s deliberate because if I’m going to make any progress in the fertility and the doability of these cows, I have to put some pressure on those traits,” he said. Calves are weaned at about six months of age during the first week of November and spend a few weeks on winter pasture 300 miles south in Twin Falls until they are marketed in early December. “My steer calves average between 425 and 450 pounds when I sell them, and I am constantly searching for cows that
Working As One can wean 50% of their body weight in six months,” he said. “That’s a huge challenge anywhere and especially in country like this, but I have a lot of cows that will do it and I think it’s a feather in our cap with these red cattle.” As successful as Ellis has been in the past with his hands-off approach, the ongoing, record-breaking drought conditions in the western part of the country wreaked havoc on his forage supply and his 2021 breeding season. “We basically run these cows no different than any of the native elk or deer herds, so when you have a very scarce nutrient base, your reproductive rates are going to take a hit,” he said. “And we really did, we got about half of our cows bred last year even though I tried to manage the forage the best I could, but because of the way I run these cows, I’m very willing to acknowledge that risk.” Ellis said that risk is often outweighed by the ecological and economical benefits he sees from using a holistic management plan. Many of his philosophies are based on the teachings of Allan Savory, Stan Parsons and Dick Divens and focus on combining the nutrient availability of his resource base with the nutrient needs of his cows and trying to make those complement each other. Pothook Ranches is dependent on public land grazing, and Ellis believes maintaining a mutually respectful relationship with his local BLM staff provides opportunities that might not otherwise exist. For example, one of Ellis’s BLM allot-
ments allows for dormant season use and he is able to graze his dry cows there until the end of February or until he starts to see body condition scores diminish. “If I wasn’t managing my grass and my cattle to coordinate calving times and breeding times with some natural seasons and cycles, I wouldn’t even be in business,” he said. “We preg tested our cows two days after Thanksgiving last fall and sent them out to that allotment for nearly three months, so they saved me a lot of money by not having to support them with mechanically harvested feed, and on a small operation like this, that makes a huge difference. “I’m certainly not going to say that I’m an Allan Savory purist, but I do the best with the resources I have here.” Ellis’s love for the land started as a young boy. He grew up horseback and “crawling around in the mountains” and is now the third generation to run his family’s ranch. He spends most of his days on a horse checking cattle and often gets help from Traci, who also works off the ranch as an office manager for a local wellness center, and from his daughter Amy, who lives nearby. His son Jace is also involved in ranch activities from time to time. “They are a tremendous amount of help to me, and I certainly couldn’t be doing what I’m doing without them,” he said. “I just turned 60 years old, and I don’t want to ever lose my enthusiasm for being able to do this, and I know having their support will help sustain that enthusiasm.” //
One of Dave Ellis’s Bureau of Land Management allotments allows for dormant season grazing, so he spends much of the winter horseback checking cows and moving them to unused forage.

Profitability Isn’t Random
By Brandi Buzzard Frobose, Director of Communications and Editor Any cow-calf producer will attest that the cow is the bedrock of the business. It’s right there in the word: cow herd. Individual cows may have a limited impact on the profitability of a herd, however collectively, when the cow herd is more productive, producers are more profitable. In a time where margins are tight and input costs are constantly rising, it’s important for every female to contribute positively to the herd. Females that don’t breed back or require extra management due to dystocia or other health challenges are ultimately wasting resources that could be utilized by other more efficient and productive females. Heifers play a significant role in the profitability of an operation and much hangs on their ability to get pregnant, wean a calf and breed back quickly in order to stay in the herd. Dr. Jordan Thomas, assistant professor and state cow-calf specialist in the Division of Animal Sciences at the University of Missouri, attests that successful heifer development and retention isn’t just “luck of the draw.” “If we can get heifers to stay in the herd and be great cows, that’s not luck. It’s management and genetics. The cost associated with cows falling out of the herd and not breeding back is second only to feed costs,” said Thomas. “We reap what we sow as managers, and profitability isn’t random,” he added.

RED ANGUS Magazine | April 2022
Recognizing the importance of profitability to the sustainability of a cow herd, and to continue providing support and Jordan Thomas marketing avenues to commercial cattle producers, RAAA developed and launched the Red Choice program to promote improved heifer development, increase marketing opportunities for Red Angus females and create reliable sources of high-quality replacement heifers for cattle producers.
“We reap what we sow as managers, and profitability isn’t random.” Red Choice embraces proven reproductive and genetic management practices which, in turn, lead to high-quality, long-lasting females that are ready to hit the ground running in commercial herds. Much of the rationale for Red Choice is based upon the success of heifer development programs like the Show-Me-Select Replacement Heifer Program from the University of Missouri. Nolan Woodruff, RAAA commercial marketing specialist, explained the necessity for Red Choice.
“Red Choice sets a standard for breeding, using advanced technology, sire selection and documentation of individual breeding. It was created to allow those producing females to be more profitable and for those who are buying Red Choice heifers to be confident that those females have been managed properly and have a higher retention rate, thus making the buyer more profitable,” he said. “The University of Missouri has proven that females that are raised using these management practices and bred using the required criteria are more valuable producers,” added Woodruff. To be included in the program and eligible for the Red Choice designation, heifers must meet the following minimum requirements: • Vaccinations at calfhood, weaning and prebreeding for common diseases including, but not limited to; Bangs, IBR, BVD, PI 3, BRSV, leptospirosis (5-way) and 7-way clostridia • Prebreeding examination and a minimum pelvic area of 150 cm2 • AI and bull exposure dates must be provided, as well as method of estrus synchronization (if applicable) • Pregnancy exam within 90 days of the start of breeding season Additionally, as one of the program’s main pillars is to significantly reduce dystocia problems, genetic requirements are implemented as well. Profitability Isn’t Random April gible sires must have a known ID, be registered with the RAAA, be Category page= 1A, 1/3 1B or II and$630 have complete EPD x‘s 1 run(s) $630AI or natural information. All=sires, service, must be a minimum of 14 for CED and have GE-EPDS.
Noticeably, the vaccination schedule and numerous exams lend themselves to multiple appointments with producer’s veterinarians, which in turn should improve the veterinarian-client-patient relationship. And while the increased touchpoints may seem burdensome at first, there is little argument to be made against the positive impacts the Red Choice management process has on the value of program heifers, both to the profitability and the sustainability of the cow herd. “Our brain tends to think of the word ‘technology’ as estrus synchronization products, long acting dewormers or the newest feed additive. However, those tools are just one kind of technology. Technology is really just knowledge applied. Management systems themselves are also a form of technology,” said Thomas. “Data collection, prebreeding evaluations, pregnancy diagnosis – those technologies of good management practices — they create the context that allows us to really capture value produced from using other tools. Looking for a tangible benefit to the increased management protocols? Thomas attests the extra touchpoints are well worth the added investment in both materials and time. “Heifers that are enrolled in ShowMe-Select routinely bring a couple hundred more per head compared to other heifers that are comparable in age, size, etc. at a sale barn,” he said.
Thomas likens it to feeder calves that are profitable for being weaned, vaccinated and bunk broke. There is tremendous value to be gained by capturing and sharing information. “Buyers appreciate quality but also really appreciate information. These are high information and high-quality heifers and buyers are willing to pay for it.” Woodruff shared his excitement about the program and the potential it has to aid commercial producers with their herd improvement goals. “The need for Red Choice is simple: documented long-term fertility. When you have more data to make an informed decision, it makes the decision easier. “By utilizing the Red Choice management practices in the development and breeding of heifers, both buyers and sellers can be extremely confident in the reproduction efficiency of heifers enrolled in the Red Choice program,” said Woodruff. “This efficiency results in cows staying productive in the herd longer and in turn being more productive and profitable for producers.” Woodruff encouraged producers who are wary about starting out in the program to contact members of the Red Angus commercial marketing team. “We are here to answer any questions about the program. This program is available for use by anyone who is breeding heifers to help make them even more valuable than they already are and we are happy to answer any questions about the program.” //

Commercial Red Angus Females Bring the Value By Kaytlin Hokanson, Top Dollar Angus Analyst/Field Representative With the calving season in full swing, ranchers are put to the test with long days and even longer nights, hoping for nice weather while praying for moisture. Although the weather isn’t as dependable as every rancher hopes, there is one thing they know that won’t let them down – the commercial Red Angus female. Ranchers across the country have leveraged the strengths of these females to bring value to each diverse operation. On most all operations, not only are steers marketed, but a portion of their heifer counterparts are sold as well. A valuable female will produce valuable feeder cattle, and through astute bull selection, balanced genetics and good health management, the Red Angus female produces a uniform and highly marketable calf crop come market time. “The efficiency, fleshing ability and mothering ability of commercial Red Angus cows are just a few of the many traits that make this breed thrive on our Sandhills operation. The Red Angus breed truly works on their own without requiring lots of extra inputs – they simply do it naturally,” said Robert Jones, a Top Dollar Angus producer. “The performance, structure, and longevity are ideal in any environment,” added Jones, who owns the Diamond Bar Ranch in Stapleton, Nebraska. There are multiple traits that combine to make a productive female. Specific traits that come to mind are heifer
pregnancy, stayability, frame size and feed efficiency. It takes at least two years on the feed bill before a rancher sees a profit from his replacement heifers. Based on that reality, it’s clear that a female must be fertile to stay in the herd for the long term. High conception rates and heifer pregnancy associated with the HPG EPD predisposes the female for success to produce a live calf with little to no help, before breeding back to maintain a calving interval no greater than 365 days. Stayability is another very important trait for producers to consider when assessing the longevity in the herd. Stayability is defined as the probability of a bull’s daughters remaining productive until at least 6 years old. Why six years? Research shows that it takes approximately six years to see a positive return on investment for each cow in the herd. By choosing sires with high Stayability EPDs, ranchers can produce sustainable cows that will remain in the herd, while also bringing value by raising heavy, highly marketable calves each year. Good livestock are evaluated not just on paper but from the ground up. Feet and legs stand at the front of any producer’s priority list. Functionality always aids longevity in an operation. A productive cow herd must be comfortable and athletic in its movements in all environments. Lack of locomotion impacts a herd’s bottom line, leading to production and reproduction losses and lowering the overall value of the herd. The Red Angus female has always been known not just for her mothering ability, but also for her ability to convert feed efficiently. The price of hay and corn has all ranchers agreeing on one

thing: efficient females are a must to be sustainable. Uniformity in a cow herd through similar frame scores is desirable, along with fleshing ability in a foraged-based environment to keep costs under control. Such females benefit the producer’s check book, by passing down feed efficient genetics to future calf crops, which feeders recognize and find more value in. The proof is in the data when looking at a commercial Red Angus female. Feed efficient cattle cut costs in all management systems. Coupled with superior functionality and a strong combination of other profitable traits, Red Angus females’ progeny bring higher returns. The longevity of a producer’s herd needs to be evaluated at least once a year, if not more often, to find those superior females that help establish the value of the herd. Backing these females with Top Dollar genetics will always improve value when marketing both steer and heifer progeny. Feel free to call a Top Dollar Angus representative to find out more. //
Jacobson Mechanic 9118 was the top bull from our ‘19 sale, and his first progeny, like the sons pictured below, have caused quite a ‘buzz’ around the breed. He is an outcross for most and he sires high performing, heavy muscled calves that are sound, athletic, and very eye-appealing. Stop by World West Sire Services in Joliet, MT and take a look at him in person!
