Board Commentary

Take The Time

One could write about all the attributes that make a Red Angus female so sought after, however I would be preaching to the choir. What about the unintended by-product of that female? What is that value?

There was a young teenage girl in the mid-1980s whose father brought home one red cow from the sale barn. This cow was different than the other Hereford and Angus cows on our farm. Research was done and soon letters were written to the Red Angus Association of America asking for more information on Red Angus cattle. Yes, I did say letters were written. There was no computer in our home or any home at that point, no cell phones and long-distance phone calls, well, those cost too much and were saved for only the most important use of time.

Information was sent from the association, read numerous times and the search began to add a registered Red Angus cow to the herd that I was building with a 4-H loan. We searched many advertisements in the newspapers and found cows that fit the criteria. They were the perfect female, in my opinion anyway. Their disposition was wonderful, they didn’t need help getting their calves to nurse, they were all over 10 years old and still raising a calf that weaned as heavy as our younger cows did on the farm. What ab solutely sold me on the breed was how kind that breeder was and the amount of time this gentleman from Plankinton, South Dakota, took to answer my many questions about this breed that was new to me.

Time went by and this young woman became involved in her state affiliate association so she could learn more about the breed and meet more people. It was the late-1990s now but cell phones still weren’t attached to our bodies and most of us had some sort of access to internet connection – but it was really, really slow speed. A person had to drive somewhere to get to know people and visit with them face to face. She met many wonderful people in the surrounding states, always feeling welcome by the long time Red Angus breeders at those events.

In 2008, she attended her first National Red Angus Convention and started to meet Red Angus breeders from all over the U.S and Canada. While at these national events, her interest in the breed continued to grow but so did her interest in helping to grow the breed. She wanted to be involved in a larger way, she wanted to start giving back to the breed that had already given her so much in the way of acquaintances, who become lifelong friends and mentors. Here was a small-town South Dakota farm girl that start ed with one red cow from a sale barn that was sharing ideas with lifelong Red Angus breeders at national events in an effort to keep growing our preferred breed of cattle.

My question to all of you would be, “What value do you place on the connections made in the cattle industry and our Red Angus breed?”

Take the time to speak to those young kids you see at any of the local events or the retired gentleman in the local livestock auction barn. There is so much to be learned from a simple conversation with everyone. Take the time to visit, take the time to foster all those relationships. The Red Angus female has many different values placed on her, but for me it will always come down to the people that have impacted my life. There is not a dollar figure that can match that value! //

Association Commentary

Value-Added Females through RAAA’s Red Choice Program

Value-added programs are most often associated with feeder cattle and calves. The industry has progressed significantly in the past decade, and is now offering large volumes of feeder cattle carrying various types of value-added labels as they enter the marketplace to be sold. Many of these programs, whether representing health certifications, natural, NHTC, GAP, Beef C.A.R.E, Red Angus FCCP or Top Dollar Angus, are third-party verified for additional integrity.

Premium prices are the rancher’s goal when participating in any value-added program, and more than ever before, that goal is being realized. The U.S. feeder cattle market increasingly recognizes the extra value associated with such verifications and pays a higher price for qualified cattle. Many of these programs have become so successful that every cow-calf producer would do well to investigate which ones fit their own situation and herd.

Would you like to make your calves more unique and valuable? Exit the commodity cattle business for good and become an active participant in the value-added movement! Identify one or more established value-added programs, talk to someone that understands the details of these programs (like the RAAA commercial marketing team) and get signed on. The highest prices in the calf and yearling markets are often seen among groups wearing value-added labels.

The Red Angus female remains the most-favored in the industry, and she makes a great starting point for Red Choice, a program based of the Show-Me-Select Heifer program jn Missouri.

RAAA believes so strongly in the value-added concept that we are now offering a program for commercial Red Angus replacement females. Red Choice is its name, and though new to the industry, this breeding female protocol is based on time-tested principles from the University of Missouri’s long-running Show-Me-Select Heifer Replacement program.

Think of Red Choice like this:

1)You select a candidate group of commercial Red Angus or Red Angus-cross females at weaning or just before they reach a year of age.

2)You follow Red Choice health, management and breeding protocols. That’s it. The result is a tremendous combination of “stacked” value attributes in a single group of bred heifers.

The Red Angus female remains the most-favored in the industry, and she makes a great starting point for Red

Choice. Then, by adding a proven layer of value-enhancing management and culling practices, the final outcome is a set of Red Choice females that will go on to create superior value, whether you keep them or sell them.

differently and provide additional management efforts to reach the desired goal of marketing cattle that can be positively differentiated from the commodity pack. “Do more, document more and earn more” is one way to sum up what is required to join the ranks of value-added producers. And keep in mind that these value-added producers consistently cash larger checks compared to their commodity cattle producing counterparts.

The University of Missouri has documented premiums on Show-Me-Select bred heifers of $200 per head or more, and while the market value of Red Choice heifers is not yet established, we expect it to be similar.

Whether creating value-added feeder calves or bred heifers via Red Choice, each progressive rancher must take on the mindset of an innovator. They must be willing to do things a bit

The U.S. beef industry is currently in cow-herd-liquidation mode as a result of drought and high-input costs. However, with cattle prices rising and rain likely to return, the 12- to 24-month outlook for bred-heifer demand is excellent.

Weekly Email Marketing Service of Feeder and Finished Cattle

To better serve Red Angus commercial cattlemen, RAAA has created a Red Angus show list for feedyards and packers looking for Red Angus-influenced cattle. Producers can market feeder or finished cattle through this free service when selling through a sale barn, video auction or private treaty. The show list is emailed out weekly to potential buyers through the Red Angus FeederFax email service. This free service is designed to inform feedyard managers, order buyers and other interested parties of cattle for sale. To upload information about cattle or to view cattle available, visit RedAngus.org/showlist.

To receive the weekly FeederFax marketing service that will highlight that week’s show list, please email tags@redangus.org.

Marketing Update

Field of Dreams

“If you build it, he will come,” is the famous quote from the popular baseball movie, “Field of Dreams.” For those who have never watched the movie, it’s based in Iowa where, one night, a corn farmer, played by Kevin Costner, hears a voice encouraging him to build a baseball field. So, Costner decides to act on the voice and ends up building a baseball diamond where the angels of legendary baseball players emerge from the corn and play a game.

Now how does this all relate to cattle? A we look at current market reports and the dreaded drought monitor, we see droves of cattle being sold in hopes of getting through these hard times. A recent graph by CattleFax shows the increase in heifers moving in to feedyards to be feeder cattle instead of being retained as replacements. The graph shows a staggering increase of the movement of heifers off the ranch. But if we flip that graph to view it as a positive, it shows there will be time for growth.

Montana and the Dakotas were stifled with extreme drought conditions in 2021, and now areas of Montana and the majority of the Dakotas received precipitation. Those areas sold loads upon loads of cattle last year. But this year, producers are already rebuilding their herds and creating a demand for replacement females. Now as areas of Texas, Oklahoma and New Mexico have once again received the blessing of rainfall, they too will eventually start to think about rebuilding their herds. As the dots begin to connect, I once again say, “If you build it, he will come.” The “he” in this scenario is other producers looking for superior genetics. Knowing there will be a time for major herd growth, why not take advantage of market demand and increase Red Angus female replacements?

In a Kansas State University analysis of sire breed effects for heifers marketed through six different Superior Livestock Auction video sales from 2015 through 2021, the data showed once again Red Angus females bring a premium. Whether it was bred heifers or heifer calves, Red Angus were the most sought-out females marketed. Seeing this encouraging data should be proof that Red Angus females are still the most-favored female in the cattle industry. As the data shows, why not pre pare your Red Angus replacement herd to become that much more profitable? The market outlooks are lining up for Red Angus females to sweep across the nation and fill producers’ herds. Now is the time to take advantage of the opportunity.

By implementing our new heifer development program, Red Choice, paired with Red Navigator, you will set your red females apart from the rest. Both programs match better management protocols allowing you to more easily select those top-performing replacements. Even though the cattle industry is nothing like the movie, “Field of Dreams,” we can still listen to that voice saying now is the time to build herds back with quality Red Angus females. //

Member Services Bulletin Which Cows in My Herd Have DNA?

Step-by-Step on Pulling a DNA Report

Across the cattle industry, we are seeing more and more utilization of DNA as a management tool for producers. DNA can contribute to accuracy of pedigrees, genetic defect tracking, cattle marketing and so much more!

Currently, RAAA requires parent verification (and necessary genetic testing) on ALL herd sires and donor dams to register calves, while naturally mating dams do not currently require DNA testing on file. When an animal does have a sample on file, the parentage section in REDSPro is simply blank. However, if a sample is submitted on a calf and the dam does not have DNA on file, REDSPro displays “Dam genotype not on file,” leaving the dam side of the pedigree sometimes inaccurate. It is said that 12% of database pedigrees are listed incorrectly. Consequently, RAAA always encourages you to pull DNA on as much of your herd as possible. This can be critical for correct qualification of animals to their sire and dam.

Are you interested in further investing in the accuracy of your records by DNA testing more of your animals? A good place to start is by pulling a REDSPro DNA Report on your herd to see which animals have been DNA (parentage) tested, and/or genomically enhanced.

To pull a DNA Report:

1. Log in to your REDSPro account

2. Go to Reports/Downloads and click on “My Reports”

Fall 2022 Member Service Announcements

1. The second installment of spring THR has been billed. If you have any questions, please contact Margaux at margaux@redangus.org or dial Ext. 7.

2. Fall 2021 inactivations will begin in October. Make sure to have your 2021 fall calf data reported. Each female in the fall season should have a calf or a reason code reported by this deadline. Please direct all questions to data@redangus.org or dial Ext. 1.

3. In the left column, under “Default Groups,” select Active Inventory – Whole Herd

4. In the right column, under “Default Reports,” select DNA Report

5. Your herd report will generate and look like the following spreadsheet:

The Case ID column indicates the lab order on which your animal was tested, while Sample ID shows the specific sample that was submitted for the animal. The Sample ID is important information to have for sample pull requests if additional testing is needed in the future. If the Parentage column is blank, the animal has not been parent verified. If it has qualifications/exclusions listed, that animal has been parentage tested. If an exclusion is listed, additional steps need to be taken to correct the pedigree as it has been found to be incorrect. When the animal has “GGP” noted in the Genomics column, that animal has genomically enhanced EPDs. You can also view registration status (R, U, Z, B, C, etc.) under the Reg Type section. It is important to know what each of these registration status means:

R – meets all registration requirements

U – on hold due to a genetic defect carrier in pedigree Z – on hold due to parent(s) not having a DNA sample on file

B – a parentage exclusion has been found in the pedigree C – animal was recorded for dam THR compliance only

The DNA Report feature can be a great tool for monitoring which animals in your herd need DNA, which animals have registration issues and other information related to samples submitted on animals in your Active Inventory (you can also pull this same report on your Foreign Inventory and Inactive Inventory). Starkey Joins Red Angus Member Services Team

The Red Angus Association of America welcomes Ryan Starkey to the member services department as a member services and DNA specialist.

“We are excited to have Ryan join the DNA department at RAAA. As the use of DNA technology in the Red Angus breed increases, having valuable team members like Ryan helps continue improving the efficiency and services provided by the department,” said Ryan Boldt, RAAA director of breed improvement.

Starkey graduated from Kansas State University in May of 2022 with a bachelor’s degree

in agricultural business and animal sciences & industry, with a focus in production management, with a minor in leadership studies.

While at KSU, she worked part-time for the International Brangus Breeders Association, serving as an assistant to the DNA department, conducting parentage verifications, genetic condition evaluations and animal data uploads.

She also completed an internship at Triumph Foods as an operations intern. Starkey credits these work experiences as providing her with valuable start-to-finish vantage points of production agriculture.

Since moving to Denver from the Kansas City area, Starkey has enjoyed exploring all of the outdoor activities Colorado has to offer. Starkey said she also loves to travel and, following graduation in May, spent a couple

of weeks in Europe traveling around different countries.

“I’m excited to be working here at the Red Angus Association of America because it means being part of an industry that I have so much respect for. Growing up, I did not come from an ag background but when I was at K-State, I really grew to appreciate the hard work and dedication of the livestock industry as a whole,” said Starkey.

“The RAAA is looking to the future to see what can be improved upon in the cattle industry. I look forward to serving our members on a day-to-day basis. I’m excited about my position here at Red Angus and to see how I grow within this company.”

Starkey started in her new role in July and can be reached at ryanstarkey@redangus.org or 940-387-3502, Ext. 5. //

Using Selection Indexes in Breeding Decisions

The beef cattle selection process is a complicated one. There are many aspects and traits that are economically important to consider when making these decisions.

Strictly looking at an EPD profile, it is often difficult to weigh tradeoffs and identify animals that will make a more positive economic impact. A proven strategy in solving this problem is utilizing economic selection indexes.

The advantage of economic selection indexes is that they help simplify the selection process when evaluating EPD information. Each trait’s relative economic emphasis is accounted for in the index.

This information is then summed to produce one overall index value that allows for an easier metric to compare EPD profiles. This value can be used to summarize an animal’s EPD profile. Thus, a producer can more easily compare animals to determine which genetic combinations are more profitable for a given segment of the beef supply chain.

Another big advantage to using indexes is that they allow for an easy mechanism for multiple trait selection. Generally, when animals show up with increased index values, they have genetic advantages for multiple traits within their EPD profile.

The RAAA currently publishes three indexes. The HerdBuilder index is a maternal index that covers traits from conception through weaning, the GridMaster index is a post-weaning

terminal index that covers traits after weaning through harvest and the Profitability and Sustainability index is an all-purpose index that combines the HerdBuilder and GridMaster indexes, so it contains traits from conception through harvest. Each of these indexes is expressed on a dollar-per-head basis.

To better understand the emphasis that is being put on different traits in each of the selection indexes, the following charts were generated.

As illustrated in the charts, each of the indexes contains multiple traits and puts varying levels of emphasis on each of the traits. When looking at the ProS index figure, there are many traits that receive measurable emphasis in the index. This clearly shows that this tool is very useful for use in multiple trait selection that can benefit all sectors of the beef industry. //

Five Elements to a Successful Seedstock Sale

There are many factors which influence the success of a seedstock auction. While quality of cattle being offered is an obvious aspect, we know breeder reputation can influence the outcome of an auction just as much or more. Over the past six years, the Red Angus Association of America’s commercial marketing team has recorded a broad range of price and marketing data while attending bull sales across the country. The goal of this data collection and analysis is to assist seedstock producers with their marketing efforts, thus allowing them to provide the best buying experience for their commercial customers. Reviewing the collective six-year data set, certain trends remain true season after season.

Customer Service

As in any business, customer service is a known factor in driving sales. It’s perhaps even more important in an industry where most business transactions are sealed with a handshake. The commercial marketing team has considered many customer service factors over the years of data collection, identifying 10 factors that positively influence bull sale averages year after year. Those 10 factors include: hosting a pre- or post-sale event; offering insurance; volume discounts; discounting bulls hauled home the day of sale; free delivery; first breeding season guarantee; health guarantee; Top Dollar Angus seedstock partnership; cost sharing Feeder Calf Certification Program enrollment; or “other” customer service as determined by the RAAA commercial marketing team. Of those 10, offering a volume discount

has consistently been the most influential customer service factor. For each sale, an aggregate score of these 10 factors is calculated to determine the level of customer service provided. The figure above illustrates sale averages based on customer service scores for sales held in the fall of 2021 and spring of 2022, as well as the distribution of sales providing each level of customer service. As expected, there is a strong linear correlation between sale average and the number of customer service amenities offered.

Genetics

Genetics are anything but simple, and buyers have many considerations within this arena alone. Each year, correlation values have been calculated between sale price and EPDs. Correlations between sale price and EPDs indicate that EPDs heavily influence bull buyers’ selection decisions. Across the six-year analysis, EPDs with the highest correla-

tion to price include: Average Daily Gain, Yearling Weight, Weaning Weight, Carcass Weight and Calving Ease Direct. Based on these correlation values, growth is consistently a highly important consideration for buyers.

Not only do buyers have an entire suite of EPD figures to evaluate, but also pedigree information to consider. Utilization of artificial insemination and embryo transfer technology has allowed for wider dissemination of elite genetics in the beef industry. Analysis has shown bulls conceived through AI or ET garner more at sale time than bulls conceived through natural service, with price spreads widening in the most recent sale season compared to previous years. Several factors likely contribute to this spread including sire name recognition, superior EPDs and the fact that AI and ET technology is most frequently used by top breeders.

Phenotype – Feet and Legs

While genetics are a driving factor in bull purchasing decisions, those bulls must also be phenotypically functional. Certainly, phenotypic preferences in cattle vary some from person to person, but it remains essential for cattle to travel around a breeding pasture. For the past two years of data collection, the marketing team has assigned a subjective foot score to each sale offering. In the most recent sale season, offerings with an “above average” foot score garnered a $1,443 premium in sale average compared to those offerings with an “average” foot score! Furthermore, there was a higher quantity of sales labeled as “above average” for foot score compared to previous years, indicating Red Angus breeders are intentionally working to improve feet. With such a significant reward in bull price and pride of improving Red Angus cattle, breeders should continue culling hard for poor feet and generating functional breeding pieces for commercial customers.

Volume of Bulls Offered

Another aspect that heavily influences averages year after year is the number of bulls offered. Each year of analysis, the spread in sale average between sales offering 100 bulls or more compared to sales offering fewer than 50 bulls has been more than $1,000. Larger sales are often hosted by breeders who have been in the Red Angus business longer,

32 RED ANGUS Magazine | October 2022

Five Elements to a Successful Seedstock Sale

indicating reputation is likely a contributing factor to the increased averages. A larger offering ensures buyers looking to purchase in volume will have the opportunity to fill their order in one location and provides opportunity to capitalize on a volume discount if one is offered. Understanding that offering a larger volume of bulls is not an option for all seedstock producers, one option for smaller producers is to participate in a cooperator program. In fact, several of the sales included in the category of “100 bulls or more” in this analysis include cooperator herds in their production sale.

Providing Quality Information

Being an informed consumer is important to bull buyers. Seedstock producers have choices when deciding how much data to collect and deliver to their customers. The six-year analysis shows data is king, and sales offering more information to their customers experience higher sale averages. Producers who provided genomic testing, ultrasound data and/or feed intake data consistently experienced higher sale averages. The way data is presented also influences sale price. A “catalog quality” score is assigned to each sale catalog, and every year sales with the highest quality catalogs garner the highest sale averages.

Clearly, a massive amount of planning and preparation goes into hosting a successful seedstock sale. It is the RAAA’s role to support seedstock producers as they generate Red Angus genetics for commercial customers, and our hope that this analysis will aid seedstock providers in their efforts to host a successful production sale and better serve their customers. Leaving a Legacy of Successful Sandhills Ranching

The branches on John Warren’s family tree may have expanded over the generations, but the roots run deep –straight down into the Nebraska Sandhills.

“All sides of my pedigree and my wife Jessica’s pedigree for the past 100 years have been born and raised within a 30mile radius,” said the Logan County rancher.

Part of that family legacy lives on at the Paxton Ranch, which was originally established in 1933 by Jessica’s father, Chester Paxton, with the purchase of 640 acres near Stapleton, Nebraska.

While the region’s sandy soil makes it unsuitable for crop farming, it is ideal for cattle grazing, and Chester, his wife, Ida, and later, John and Jessica, were able to build and expand the ranch holdings over the years. Today, the operation consists of 40,000 deeded acres and a 10,000-acre grazing permit in the Nebraska National Forest near Halsey that they’ve maintained since 1948.

Originally a Hereford operation, the family began using Red Angus genetics in the early 1970s to produce red baldy females, and by the mid-1990s, they were exclusively red.

“We started using some Red Angus bulls on our first-calf Hereford heifers and really liked those calves, so we continued using the red bulls more and more,” Warren said. “We sold quite a few bred heifers back then and invariably,

people would pick out the solid red ones when they had the choice, so the Red Angus female became a big item for us.

“My father-in-law was pretty easy to get along with, and as much as he had liked the Hereford cattle, he knew times were changing.”

Building a Maternal Herd Red Angus females still reign supreme at Paxton Ranch. While the family retains ownership on most of their steer calves and a few heifer cuts, Warren will tell you their 2,000head herd is maternal based.

“We’re not afraid to grid our fed cattle, but we’re more concerned with the female side of things,” he said.

Jessica and John Warren of the Paxton Ranch started using Red Angus bulls in the early 1970s to produce red baldy females.
40 RED ANGUS Magazine | October 2022

“If feeders are gaining 4 pounds a day at the feedlot, that satisfies us, but when we only have to pull about one out of 1,000 calves each spring, that really makes us happy.

“We expect our cows to go over the hill to calve on their own and bring a calf in year in and year out.”

In addition to calving ease, Warren said he also appreciates the docility, hardiness and longevity of his Red Angus cows.

“They’re just really good mamas,” he said. “We typically cull everything at 10 years old and can sell most of those cows to other ranchers in the area who might be able to get another five years out of them.”

Those strong maternal traits are especially important in the operation’s heifer development program. The family exposes 85% to 90% of their heifer calves for 23 to 30 days starting June 10. They use a 25-to-1 bull to female ratio with an average 75% conception rate. Replacement females winter on cake, range and mineral but never get hay or see the inside of a pen.

“Whether they’re going to Iowa where they’ll get lots of feed or they go someplace like Texas or South Dakota where they have to hustle for feed, we think they make a better cow if they’re never locked up,” Warren said.

Red Angus’ strong maternal traits are particularily important in the Paxton Ranch’s heifer development program.

Paxton Ranch typically retains about 400 of the bred heifers, with a cut right out of the middle.

“The biggest heifers and the littlest heifers go to the sale pen,” Warren said. “It’s not uncommon to experience several consecutive dry years here in the Sandhills, which can really affect our forage resources. We like to maintain a moderate-size frame in our cow herd to minimize maintenance requirements.”

For the past 15 years, a group of the remaining bred heifers has been consigned to the Cross Diamond Cattle Co. annual production sale, and the family uses that market as a starting point for private treaty sales into the winter.

Adding Value to Feeder Calves

Paxton Ranch annually enrolls about 900 steers and open heifers in the Red Angus Feeder Calf Certification Program, which provides age, source and genetic verification for Red Angus-sired calves and affords access to international markets and exclusive grids.

A group of the best feeder heifers is typically consigned to the Superior Livestock Auction Bighorn Classic sale in Sheridan, Wyoming, each year. Warren said he particularly likes marketing cattle through Superior so he can avoid the added shrink often associated with hauling to the auction barn and capture premiums associated with value-added programs like FCCP and industry-recognized vaccination protocols. Paxton Ranch calves are vaccinated at branding, preconditioned for a minimum of 45 days and then given a booster before leaving the ranch.

Retained calves bound for the feedlot are first sent 120 miles south to graze on wheat and oat pasture for 100 days and then on to a grow yard for another 70 days.

The family has a longstanding relationship with Darr Feedlot near Cozad, Nebraska, where the Warrens appreciate the operation’s consistent gain and strong marketing abilities.

“We’ve been doing business with Darr for 30 to 40 years,” Warren said. “You really have to trust the way a feedlot

Paxton Ranch focuses on maternal strengths on their cow herd.

markets your cattle, and we’ve always felt they deal with us fairly.”

Continuing a Legacy

With so many moving parts to the ranch, Warren relies on a strong supporting cast to get through the day-to-day responsibilities and keep the engine running.

“We couldn’t do all of this without help from our longtime employees and several family members, including our son, Joel,” he said. “Jessica and I have always been focused on sustaining a profitable ranching operation and making it possible for another generation to carry it on, and it’s good to see these younger people interested in working hard and learning the business.” //

Higher profits. Pound for pound.

ICONTM is a highly palatable formulation that provides advanced nutrition for intensive management situations. When supplemented to cows with calves at side, calves gain on average an additional 30lbs at weaning. And that’s something you can take to the bank.

Cattle Record Keeping: There’s an App for That

For ranchers, record keeping is one of the most critical, yet most stressful, jobs they perform daily. Accurate records improve herd performance, EPD accuracy and aid in making herd management decisions. Lost records are a nightmare for any rancher. However, there are now multiple mobile apps available to ranchers that allow data entry via phone that can be accessed from anywhere, even the pasture. Each app offers something different but there is an app that will work well for anyone.

701x

701x Autonomous Rancher is a software management platform to record all basic and performance collection data for a rancher’s herd. The software integrates with breed associations so ranchers can import their current data and export their data from the 701x platform into the online platform of their specific breed association.

701x Autonomous Rancher features a mobile app that works offline, allowing producers to record all their data in the field and sync it up to the cloud once connected back online. The platform allows any operation to have an unlimited number of users to keep data on every animal up to date.

The platform has an optional ear tag that connects data to the app directly. The current xTpro model ear tag has GPS communication that records the location of the animal every 15 minutes. If the animal’s GPS location is outside of its assigned digital fence,

an alert is sent immediately through the app with the animal’s current GPS coordinates. This makes it quick and easy to find where fences need to be fixed. If the animal is inside the digital fence, the location will be reported once a day at a pre-determined checkin time.

The xTpro triggers a free-fall alert if an animal loses its tag and an additional, no-movement alert to notify when an animal hasn’t moved for an extended period of time. The xTpro also features a transportation alert when an animal is moving at a high rate of speed. When any of these alerts are triggered, the associated GPS coordinates of the animal are sent immediately so users can find and save the animal.

“We will be releasing our xTlite tag in October with Bluetooth and RFID capabilities. The tag’s Bluetooth provides longer read ranges of 50-100 feet versus wands, requiring a rancher to be super close to the animal. Essentially, the tag allows your mobile phone to become your wand for data collection,” explained Max Cossette, business developer of 701x.

The software features a roll call that creates a list of animals based on selected filters. Each animal meeting the criteria will be listed and allows users

The xTpro tag transmits GPS coordinates every 15 minutes and can alert ranchers when an animal is outside its assigned digital (and physical) fence.

to check them off once the animals are located. With xTpro and xTlite tags, animals can autonomously be checked off when the mobile device is within Bluetooth range. Additionally, users can add any sick animals to a watchlist to monitor them more closely.

Right now, bull data brings the most value for the tags. Tagging bulls allows users to know they are staying with the cow herd and promotes higher pregnancy rates. Users can also view their footstep report to see which bulls are doing the most work. 701x is planning to release a bull mounting

feature to understand which bulls are being the most productive. Additionally, they plan to release estrous and calving detection, and health monitoring features in the future.

“We’re hoping ranchers will begin adjusting to our software and using the tags in their bulls. So once the estrous and calving detection features become available, ranchers will start adopting it more in their cow herd. We want to promote the efficiency of the operation to save labor costs and drive more profitability,” said Cossette.

Additionally, the 701x software program allows ranchers to easily input their recorded data into their REDSPro account.

Cattle ID

Cattle ID is an easy-to-use digital replacement for calving books.

Nearly every rancher knows the frustration of having to drive back to the house to retrieve the left-behind calving book. It’s even worse trying to treat an animal, only to realize another family member or employee has the calving book in their truck miles away.

with their smartphone, and access it from anywhere. Cattle ID allows all members of the operation to be on the same page simply by accessing the app on the phone they are already carrying with them.

Built for today’s cattleman, the Cattle ID mobile app works offline, allows users to prioritize data based on their operation needs and create custom herd groupings. Ranchers can also export their data and use their records however they need.

Not having records available at their fingertips costs ranchers time and money, both of which are crucial to the bottom line.

With Cattle ID, ranchers can easily record their data digitally, capture it

“We’ve learned from ranchers and allowed commercial and seedstock operators to show us what data points matter the most and what format they need to be presented in. Cattle ID users are helping us identify and build the features that matter most to today’s producer. Ranchers need tools that allow them to make better herd decisions no matter where they are,” said Alex Heine, senior associate

of product development at the New Stockyard Group.

Cattle ID’s digital calving book enables multiple users to share their data across the operation. The data is secure and protected in the cloud, which allows ranchers to divide and conquer without fear of losing notes on which pastures, water tanks and minerals were checked, or which cows were treated.

“The app is straightforward and does not require a learning curve for complicated features. The app is designed to ease your record-keeping burdens, not add to them. Producers who want to replace their paper calving books with a digital one will be surprised how quickly and easily they can get onboard,” explained Heine.

Cattle ID is a non-invasive technology. It does not require ear tags or implants. Instead, Cattle ID Mobile

has an image-based visual ID feature, making it affordable for ranchers with 10 to 10,000 head of cattle. Users will even show off photos of their favorite cattle to friends, neighbors and customers.

“The app works for producers of all technical abilities, getting ranchers out of clunky spreadsheets and crowded text message threads,” said Heine. “We’ve helped many different producers find success in using our app. It’s simple enough for new users and easily customizable for advanced users.”

As Cattle ID Mobile rolls out to ranches, it is currently available by invitation only. To request an invitation, please go to www.cattleidapp.com.

Cattle production in the U.S., from gate to plate, is massive, diverse and almost always volatile. In fact, recent data indicates nearly three-quarters of a million farms and ranches own beef cattle. As two distinct beef operations in the Kansas Flint Hills, it’s important to make certain our customers understand who we are. We want our customers to appreciate our best-practice principals of production and know we believe in earning trust by breeding, marketing and standing behind our products. The Kniebel and Downey synergies extend from personal friendships, to how we care for our animals, to the breeding decisions we make, to ensuring customers turn out bulls with reproductive efficiency, impeccable phenotype, genomic enhanced EPDs, calm temperament and docility.

How to Enroll in FCCP and AA

1. The producer contacts the Red Angus Association of America at 940-477-4593 and answers a short supplier enrollment questionnaire over the phone. RAAA staff will ask general management, animal identification and breeding questions. If needed, the producer may be asked to supply additional documentation on breeding such as semen receipt, lease agreements or information on purchased females.

2. After all documentation is recorded, staff will ship the tags directly to the producer who must tag the calves before they leave the ranch of origin – birth, branding, preconditioning, weaning or before loading on the semi.

3. The producer will receive a customer enrollment agreement to fill out and return to RAAA with a copy of their calving records.

4. Staff will issue the USDAapproved Certificate of Compliance upon receiving the customer enrollment agreement and calving record.

The Red Angus Feeder Calf Certification Program is the first step in differentiating your cattle to buyers, feedlots and packers.

Experience industry-leading return on investment for just the cost of an ear tag – with no enrollment fees. The Red Angus Association of America Marketing Team offers assistance to Red Angus bull customers at no charge.

Red Angus Females and the Power of Compounding Genetics

As we move into the fall season, it seems appropriate to dive into the foundational force of the industry –the U.S. beef cow. She’s been improving over time in a myriad of ways.

She’s provided a higher and higher platform for the rest of the industry to stand on. We further note that when it comes to the improvement in productivity and efficiency of the average commercial beef cow, the Red Angus breed has been a major leader in this transformation. That’s why almost everywhere across the country today, red cows are more apparent than they were 10 or 20 years ago.

From the beginning of the RAAA in 1954, the use of science and data was used to help cement a place for the Red Angus breed in the future of beef production. Waldo Forbes, the first association president, encapsulated this vision for the breed:

“The policy of the (Red Angus) Association is to discourage the more artificial practices in purebred cattle production and to place its faith instead in objective tests, consisting for the most part of comparisons within herds of factors of known economic importance and known heritability.

By making this an integral part of the registration system, Red Angus breeders feel that even faster progress can be made toward the ultimate goal of more efficient beef production.”

-Waldo Forbes Jr.

This vision, that at the time, may have been considered out of the norm or even “radical,” eventually allowed Red Angus breeders who trusted the vision with a powerful tool that often goes unnoticed.

That tool is compounding genetic value. Much like the idea of compounding interest, when breeders began investing in objectively determined, high-value genetics, every mating thereafter was built upon that

established value, compounding their genetic merit and taking it up to a higher level still.

Even while the tools to measure this progress took time to develop, the application of these innovative principles, in combination with useful tools such as Red Navigator, made Red Angus females the most sought-after in the cow-calf business.

As mentioned above, the result of this focus is as apparent in the value of today’s Red Angus female as anywhere. The focus on functional females coupled with balanced genetic selection to carry efficiency into the future has made Red Angus a maternal powerhouse without giving up on terminal traits that support downstream segments of the beef supply chain.

The objectively quantified genetic focus originally established in decades past built the foundation, much like the original investment in a savings account that has grown over time and allowed subsequent investments to build even more value.

While numerous other breeds followed fads and short-term trends, such as investing in the more volatile stock market, Red Angus used solid investments and the value of time to bring

them to the front of the pack today.

The beef industry of the future includes a well-defined role for Red Angus. The breed’s relevance and contribution are to help producers across the globe produce the most nutrient dense protein source at a high level of efficiency. This is all thanks to the compounding value of using objective data, coupled with cutting-edge science and common-sense decision making when dealing with genetics.

Onward and upward! //

The beef cow is the foundational force of the U.S. beef industry and Red Angus females are leaders in productivity and efficiency.

Preparation in the Fall will be Beneficial Later at Calving Time

by Kevin Schulz, as published on www.beefmagazine.com

It’s not too early for cattle producers to prepare for winter.

Lindsay Waechter-Mead, DVM and a University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension beef systems educator, first recommended doing pregnancy checks.

“Autumn is a real good time, especially if you’re late-winter or early-spring calving. You can get some of those girls preg-checked as early as 35 days,” she said, to determine if cows are open. “You’re going to be able to cull when the market is historically stronger, and you’re not going to be wasting forages or resources if you’re feeding open cows.”

Also, if producers are fetal sexing, that could help them take advantage of a potential market for bred heifers, Waechter-Mead said. “If you know the sex of the calf, you have the opportunity to target a specific clientele,” she says.

Another benefit of preg checking according to Waechter-Mead, is that cattle producers can put their cows into pregnancy groups. “So you know when they’re going to calve approximately,” she said. “That will help at the time of calving because then you can actually sort them out and segregate, trying to have calves in the same age group, which will help prevent some illnesses.”

Don’t forget calving pens

With late-winter and early-spring calving on the mind, Waechter-Mead recommended deciding now on where the calves will be born. Even if the calving pens haven’t changed over the years, she said it helps to have another set of eyes survey the situation, such as your veterinarian or an Extension professional.

This third-party walk-through at this time of year allows for any necessary changes. “Have you had issues in the past? Can they be addressed by some facility changes?” she asked.

Such changes can include creating a fenced-off calf escape zone “to get out of pathogen load or to have an area where the calves can get away from the cows for a little bit to really help with illness problems.”

Also, ensure facilities are structurally sound now, rather than during a stressful calving season.

Assess winter nutrition

The end of summer, when cows are coming off grass, is a good time to score them for body condition, wanting them to be a 5 on the 1-to-9 scale when they calve.

“Maybe if the cows are a little thin, what energy or protein levels do they need to be at to make sure they are at the peak nutritional rate when they calve,” she said.

“The best time to put on condition is as soon as you wean those calves, since the cows have the lowest energy and nutritional requirements at that time. So if you know what you have to feed, you can adjust accordingly.”

Because feed is the highest cost of cattle production, Waech ter-Mead suggested now is the time to assess your stored forages for quantity and quality. She suggested getting your hay tested and “getting all of that set up with your veterinarian, Extension professional or nutritionist – someone that you trust to get that nutritional plan set so you have all of that ready to go.” //

Memory

Kenneth Gilsdorf 1923-2022

Kenneth James Gilsdorf, age 99 of Shawnee, Kansas, passed away on August 12, 2022.

He was born to William Gilsdorf and Emma Cody Gilsdorf on March 27, 1923, in Lawrence, Nebraska. Kenny was the fourth of 11 children. He grew up during the Great Depression, helping his family by farming and shearing sheep all over the Midwest.

He met the love of his life at Netawaka High School and just days before leaving for World War II, married Mary Lou Williams Gilsdorf on March 31, 1944. He spent two-and-a-half years stationed in Italy, receiving a bronze star and the rank of Tech Sergeant. Upon his return home, they started their family and lived on a farm by Havensville, Kansas, but eventually

Birth Announcement

moved to the Shawnee area in 1952.

Kenny and Mary had six children: Michael, Susan, Rita, David, Scott, and MaryAnn. In 1974 when Rita passed away, Kenny and Mary raised her two children, Eric and Michelle, as their own. He was always proud of and cherished his family.

Kenny built hundreds of houses, apartment buildings and office buildings around the Kansas City area as a carpenter and general foreman. He was considered one of the best carpenters in Kansas City by all of his associates. Kenny switched occupations in 1974 to become a “batch man” for R.E.D. Concrete Company. He retired in 1988 but kept doing part-time carpentry work until he was over 90 years of age. Kenny was an extremely giving person of his time and talent. He loved to play cards, was an excellent hunter, and for many years Mary and Kenny spent the winters in Donna, Texas, near friends and relatives. He will most be remembered as someone who would help out in any situation and

have fun doing it.

Mary and Kenny were members of the Santa Fe Trail/Highway 56 Association. They were also instrumental in the development of Old Shawnee Town. One of the greatest adventures of his life was preparing for and traveling down the Santa Fe trail in miniature covered wagons. It took a year to prepare for the five-week journey that took place in 1965 with his family and 25 other children. Kenny purchased, broke, and trained the horses and he made the wagons. Mary made the pioneer costumes and wagon covers.

Kenny and Mary celebrated their 78th wedding anniversary on March 31, 2022. They had visitors daily which is a testament to their character and hospitality. Kenny will be joining his wife Mary in heaven, just 25 days after her passing. The love story continues.

Kenny is survived by 5 children, 16 grandchildren and 38 great-grandchildren.
