MISSION: To connect people with plants and the beauty of living landscapes.
VISION: A community that understands values, protects, and is enriched by the world of plants.
As we launch the 38th spring season in the Garden, I am thrilled to share exciting updates for our future with our loyal supporters. Visitors to Red Butte Garden know that the Garden provides a special connection to nature that can be restorative and nourishing. In fact, we like to think of gardens and green spaces as nature’s prescription for overall health and well-being.
Our 2022 year-end campaign, Red Butte Garden Rx, continues to thrive. Funding raised is dedicated to studying and identifying the critical link between human interaction and exposure to nature in improving both physical and mental health. A growing body of evidence suggests that exposure to nature not only improves cognitive function, brain activity, blood pressure, mental health, and sleep, but access to green spaces has also been directly correlated to a more favorable outcome to the wellbeing of children.
I’m happy to report that the Garden recently completed an extensive Interpretive Master Plan, detailing new concepts and recommendations for educational and directional signage. In 2022-23, the Garden also launched conversations around a five-year Strategic Plan to guide our organizational decisions and advance our mission. Additionally, we are in the process of developing a garden-wide Master Plan that will cultivate opportunities for new and revitalized spaces to nourish our community.
As the world continues to struggle with emotional health and wellness challenges—both associated with physical afflictions like the coronavirus and mental health concerns, it’s impossible for us not to reflect on Red Butte Garden’s position of responsibility in our community. We look forward to expanding and revitalizing our green spaces and facilities over the next decade and into the future.
To you, our supportive and generous Garden-loving community, we express our sincere gratitude. We are privileged to be the stewards of Red Butte Garden & Arboretum and are excited to continue our work into the future.
With appreciation,
Derrek Hanson, Executive Director5 WHERE TO BEGIN: A CONVERSATION ABOUT ENVIRONMENTAL DESIGN

WHERE TO BEGIN: A CONVERSATION ABOUT ENVIRONMENTAL DESIGN
Spring is a great time to start thinking about how to create or recreate your garden design to be more environmentally conscious. This could include adding hydrozones to your garden and irrigation system, reconsidering the functionality of your lawn, adding hardscape, increasing planting beds, and incorporating waterwise plants. Some simple and practical adjustments to the way we look at and organize our garden spaces can have a significant effect on the water they need and use. Doing so, we create landscapes that are unique and appropriate for the region we live in and better protect one of our most precious resources—our water supply.
One thoughtful adjustment could be configuring your garden into hydrozones. When hydrozoning, you simply group plants with similar water needs together into your landscape. Each valve of your irrigation system can be set for the specific needs of plants encompassed in each zone. This allows you to keep your garden areas looking vibrant and healthy using the minimum amount of water required.
Turf is a common feature of many home landscape designs and a subject of much debate. You don’t have to do away with it entirely. There are benefits to having lawns—they provide cooling effects, erosion control, water filtration and infiltration, and are resilient to foot and pet traffic. When designing an environmentally conscious landscape, consider the functionality of the turf areas and reduce lawn to areas to where you or your pets spend time. Search for water efficient turf varieties like buffalo grass (Bouteloua dactyloides), turf-type tall fescue blend (Festuca sp.) which is used here at the Garden, or other waterwise turf mixes Areas of highest traffic can be replaced with hardscape, such as patios or flagstones—no watering necessary.
Once you have reduced your turf areas, you will have new bed spaces to work with. These can be filled with plants that are water efficient, aesthetically pleasing, and appropriate for our semiarid climate.
WATERWISE PLANT SUGGESTIONS
Abies concolor (White Fir)
Arctostaphylos x coloradoensis (Manzanita)
Ephedra equisetina (Bluestem Joint Fir)
Erodium chrysanthum (Yellow Storksbill)
Eryngium yuccifolium (Rattlesnake Master)
Dalea spp. (Prairie Clover)
Limonium spp. (Sea Lavender)
Linum spp. (Flax)
Muhlenbergia spp. (Muhly Grass)
Pinus aristida (Bristlecone Pine)
Rhus spp. (Sumac)
Rosa glauca (Red-leaf Rose)
Seseli gummiferum (Moon Carrot)
Sphaeralcea spp. (Globemallow)
Tanacetum densum ssp. amani (Partridge Feather)
When hydrozoning, it's easy to group plants that range from locally adapted and native plants that can survive on little to no water in one zone, to slightly more thirsty plants that require one or two waterings a week in another zone, and so on.
In this season of renewal, consider how adjustments and redesigns of your irrigation systems and landscape can have larger impacts over time. Now is the time to conserve water and increase biodiversity of plants, beneficial insects, and trees in your landscape. It is also time to start thinking outside of your own yard and maybe even help your neighbor with their space. As always, your Red Butte Garden community is here to help you find a direction.

VOLUNTEERS IN THE FIELD
We’d like to give a big shout out to our Field Class volunteers! We are thrilled to report that over 7,500 students from kindergarten-12th grade attended school field classes at Red Butte Garden in 2022. These programs would not have been possible without the help of our dedicated School Programs team and volunteers. We’ve received wonderful feedback from teachers and students about their experiences.
One teacher said, “We love Red Butte Garden! Thank you for your optimal organization and communication. All the volunteers were nice and knowledgeable. Our students had the most amazing experience that will help them respect and admire our beautiful state!”
Another added, “The staff were amazing! Out of all our outings, I felt the most support and attentiveness from you all. It made the trip all the better.”
In addition to supporting our field classes, volunteers have also been a great help with our Botany Bin and Botany Box programs, which offer botany-based resources for students and teachers. Botany Bins and Boxes include activities, materials, and curriculum for hands-on scientific investigations at no cost to public or charter schools. Over 36,000 students throughout Utah have received Botany Boxes since 2020. Our volunteers have played a crucial role in creating the boxes by collecting and boxing up the plant materials,
magnifiers, bags, journals, and more. Teachers are delighted that their students now have the opportunity to try something different, as the materials provided by Red Butte Garden are not items that teachers can easily obtain on their own.
We appreciate our volunteers for working with the Garden’s School Programs team to provide engaging and hands-on educational experiences for students throughout the state of Utah.
To get involved as a Red Butte Garden volunteer, please join us at our Volunteer Fair Open House on Saturday, March 11 from 11AM-1PM to learn more about all the opportunities we offer. More information at redbuttegarden.org/volunteer-atred-butte-garden
