Red Butte Garden

By Gregory J. Lee, Executive Director This Summer Red Butte Garden celebrates the opening of our newest garden: The Sarah J. McCarthey and Family Rose Garden. At over one acre, the Rose Garden, located just south of our amphitheater, is delightfully nestled between Red Butte Creek and the Dumke Floral Walk. The Rose Garden is designed to demonstrate the diversity of roses and the rose family. It is a gift to the community from the McCarthey Family Foundation and over 100 additional donors, including the George S. & Dolores Doré Eccles Foundation, Ezekiel R. Dumke Jr. & Kay Dumke, Dr. Nancy Martin, the late Sally Burbidge Cassidy, Paul & Terrell Dougan, Jennifer Speers, Raymond Family Foundation, and Norman & Barbara Tanner. It includes an Overlook Garden, a Wedding Garden, and the Ring Garden that is a special gift of Sarah’s husband, Mark Dressman and her son, Mac. There will also be a Cottage Garden. A variety of spaces have been created ranging from small, intimate nooks to larger spaces for special events such as weddings, classes, and other group functions. For example, the Ceremonial Arbor in the Wedding Garden frames the waterfall behind it and embraces a wedding lawn that can accommodate 300 guests. Unlike traditional rose gardens, this garden doesn’t contain formal rows of roses. Rather, it has symmetrical plantings and form, but in a western-garden look that demonstrates the integration of roses with companion

plants to lengthen the season of interest while complementing the roses. In intimate and interesting settings, it showcases the color, fragrance, form, flowers, and foliage of things rosaceous. Roses are featured throughout in a variety of contexts, ranging from formal in the Ring Garden to informal landscapes, hedges, pergolas, and trellises. Roses are presented in a variety of forms, from miniatures to shrub, to climbing and groundcover. Altogether, the Garden contains 798 roses representing 112 different varieties, including representatives of English and other shrub roses, floribundas, hybrid teas, albas, rugosas, grandifloras, and polyanthas amongst others. In addition, it also contains 52 other members of the rose family and 140 varieties of nonrosaceous companion plants. The Garden is grateful for the generosity of the McCarthey's and other donors and the gift they bring the community in the celebration of roses.

The Rose Garden at Red Butte Garden provides a diverse display of roses suitable for use in Utah gardens

The Sarah J. McCarthey Family Rose Garden

& A

By Bryn Ramjoué, Director of Communications

As Red Butte Garden presents the newest of 11 themed gardens at Red Butte Garden and Arboretum, we share the tale of how this garden grew. Sarah McCarthey has a nurturing soul. She is a teacher at heart. Professionally, she is Professor of Language and Literacy in the Department of Curriculum and Instruction at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. Personally, she is a tutor of teachers, a lover of literature and a romantic about roses. Raised in Utah, Sarah recalls with a pause and a reflective smile the scent and sight of floribunda rose hedges so prevalent in Utah yards. Sarah remembers fondly rose hedges in her yard on Maywood Drive in Salt Lake City. She recalls that her Mother kept cut roses in the house during the summer and that her brothers would reap scrapes and scratches from long football tosses and wrestling matches when they were young.

8

Red Butte Garden

Salt Lake City summers, rich with the sound of crickets and the sight of abundant rose blossoms are only part of Sarah’s connection to Utah. She taught in the public school system for nine years. She has many friends and family here still. The McCarthey Family Foundation, including brothers Thomas, Shaun and Philip and sisters Maureen and Sarah, made this contribution to Red Butte Garden so that we can wander and reminisce among the roses as a community. The McCarthey Family Foundation made their gift in memory of their mother, Jane Finn McCarthey. Sarah’s husband and son, Dr. Mark Dressman and Mac Dressman gave their own contribution to honor Jane with the Ring Garden – a walled garden that brings peace to a busied mind the minute you are there – something Jane would have liked. Sarah said that she feels roses are, “the penultimate flower, representing hope, joy and peace. And, most importantly, promise. Roses bloom, die and bloom again, a cycle that holds a lot of promise.” Her

favorite rose is the Yellow Rose of Texas. Jane’s favorite was the soft pink cluster-flowering floribunda from her own backyard. The Rose Garden itself is full of promise as a part of the larger botanic garden and arboretum. Sarah said of Red Butte Garden, “I love the sense of having beauty all around and the Garden’s diversity is incredible.” She especially loves the Children’s Garden where her son, Mac, attended many Kids Camps. “I also love the idea of combining music with the wonderful outdoors,” she said. “Red Butte is a gem of the community. It offers educational opportunities and is an extension of our commitment to education.” Sarah and Mark have an education foundation called the McCarthey Dressman Education Foundation. Sarah concluded with, “It’s all about growing community, memories, and minds.” We can’t agree more and sincerely thank the McCarthey and Dressman families for their “floribundant” gifts to Red Butte Garden.

wonderful fragrance and require little pruning. Modern shrub roses, such as the Kordesii hybrids and English roses, combine the best characteristics of old and new roses, such as cold-hardiness, repeating bloom, a variety of flower color and form, and low maintenance. Roses can be grown in mixed borders, in containers, against walls, climbing over arbors, or as groundcovers. They do well in many situations as long as they are provided with their basic requirements: sunshine, good drainage, nutrients and water. Choosing roses that are resistant to insect and disease problems and that are well-suited to Utah’s environment will mean that you can enjoy beautiful flowers with less care and chemical input. www.redbuttegarden.org

Rose Garden/Amphitheatre Renovation: The Rose Garden and Amphitheatre are finally open to curious visitors after limited access through the winter. Wet spring weather delayed completion of the paving and landscape work. Finishing touches will be ongoing for another few weeks. The Amphitheatre will see a few upgrades before the first concert, including construction of a seating wall, enhanced lighting on the Sponsor Terrace ramps and WIFI coverage for the bowl. We also hope to begin construction of a bridge across Red Butte Creek that will connect the Rose Garden and stage.

Interwest Construction has completed the first phase of a project that will eventually expand the Cottam Visitor Center and link the Visitor Center and Orangerie. Phase 1 has renovated the main stairway and moved offices for Visitor Services staff to allow a future expansion of the Gift Shop. This work was a priority in order to have the staff offices ready for a busy spring and concert ticket sales. The total project, which will be complete at the end of the year, will provide office space for all the Garden’s non-horticulture staff, an enlarged conference/class room, a Gift Shop tripled in size, and an interior connection and additional elevator between the Visitor Center and Orangerie.

Unlike animals, endangered plant species are not protected if they occur on privately-owned property. Therefore, these particular populations have been impacted by and are currently heavily threatened by the rapid development activity in Washington County. Their desert location also makes them susceptible to early climate change effects. Red Butte Garden assists in their conservation by collecting seeds for long-term preservation, propagation and research on the species in case future augmentation of the populations becomes necessary. www.redbuttegarden.org

Volunteer Highlight

“Volunteer together It’s a great way to spend time with friends or family.”

R

By Marianne Zenger, Volunteer Coordinator Red Butte Garden has many dynamic couples, families, and friends who volunteer together in all aspects of the Garden’s mission. One such duo is Ann Scott and Julie Myers, a mother-daughter team who are indispensable to the Board of Advisors, School Groups, Conservation Special Events, and the Garden Guide programs. In the 1980s, Ann shopped an Annual Plant Sale Benefit and saw how amazing the young Garden was and what a bright future it had. Soon after that May day she joined the Board of Advisors helping with fundraising and garden designs. Ann engaged her daughter Julie to join her for horticulture days and event volunteering. As gardening became a prominent activity in the lives of these ladies, they became Master Gardeners and spent many of their volunteer hours at Red Butte Garden providing tours as Garden Guides. It didn’t stop there! They accomplished a major undertaking, researching and writing Trees of the State Arboretum, a valuable resource to tree aficionados and those who simply appreciate a solid trunk and welcome shade. Recently, Julie added School Programs and Conservation to her areas of expertise. Ann is on her second term with the Board of Advisors and is the Chair for

the Facilities and Gardens Committee. We are sure it will not stop here for these two dedicated volunteers. Both women express their love of Red Butte Garden. Ann remarked, “It’s the most satisfying place to spend a few hours away. Just being here, no matter what I am doing, is a great escape. I also love the variety of the Garden and the people up here. Everyone is incredible from the volunteers to the staff.” Julie enjoys the opportunity to work with children in a safe and educational environment and sharing the beauty of the changing seasons with everyone. As the volunteer coordinator and supervisor of the Garden Guides I can attest to the devotion and passion these ladies have for their service to Red Butte Garden. I can always count on them to respond to the call for assistance and I appreciate their zeal for the work. Red Butte Garden is lucky to have this dynamic duo and other incredible volunteers. Their efforts do not go unnoticed and we are always grateful for their friendship. If you would like to join in these efforts, visit www. redbuttegarden.org/volunteer or call 585-5688 to learn how you can make a difference.

We invite you to explore with us the many ways planned gifts can be used to help the Garden achieve our important mission of education, conservation, botanical display and community enrichment, while meeting your financial and planning needs.
