Sprout House Workshops Monday Family Nights The Garden's Living Collections
A NEVER ENDING STORY
M
useums are characterized by their collections, whether they be collections of artwork, archeological artifacts, military equipment, or any one of a thousand different things. A curated botanical garden is also a museum. Its collections are plants (See Jason Baker’s article on page eight in this issue). Their provenance is known and recorded and they are accessioned just as paintings would be in an art museum. What sets a Botanical Garden’s collections apart from other museums' is that Garden collections are alive and growing. Every specimen is changing every day, and the constellation of specimens is, every day, weaving anew the tapestry that forms the landscapes we call a garden. Every plant in the collection has a story to tell – from its evolutionary and horticultural history, to its ecology, to its ethnobotanical use, to its relationship with specific pollinators. The broader story of Red Butte Garden continues to unfold. This spring we opened a new three-acre Water Conservation Garden. It is open, but not completed. While we still have many plants to add, signage to develop and display, and benches and chairs to put out, the new Water Conservation Garden is incomplete in a more fundamental way. Its plants are young and will take years to mature; some will succeed and thrive, and others will not. Planting designs will change and evolve, new plants will be tested and trialed, and views will transform as trees and shrubs mature. The story of this Garden has just begun. Like any garden it will be a never ending story, with no two days ever the same. Please join us in watching this Garden grow and change over the next many years.

RED BUTTE GARDEN CONCERT VOLUNTEERS HAVE A NEW SPONSOR: INTERMOUNTAIN HEALTHCARE By Lauren Miller, Volunteer Coordinator & Angela Wilcox, Development Officer
T
he most anticipated night of your summer has arrived! Your favorite artist is playing at Red Butte Garden in what is, without a doubt, one of the most beautiful venues around. You retrieved your concert tickets from two blonde women at the Will-Call Booth, one with an unmistakable Southern accent, but both of whom helped you figure out where the line forms, and how to leave a ticket for your friend. You joined the crowd and immediately recognized the vibe that can only be described as unparalleled excitement and a sense that there is nowhere else these 3,000 people would rather be. You patiently, yet eagerly awaited the moment when the gate opened. You were greeted warmly by a lady with bicycle earrings who genuinely said, “Enjoy the show!” as she scanned your ticket. You sensed that the ticket-takers were just as happy that you were here as you were. Once you settled into the perfect spot for the night, you made your way to the recycling station and asked the amiable redhead in a Red Butte Garden Volunteer t-shirt where to purchase merchandise. She pointed you in the right direction, and, on your way to the merchandise tent, you wondered how someone standing behind a trash can could still be so sincerely friendly. You noticed more folks in volunteer t-shirts on the lawn helping other concert-goers and dancing to the opening act. With the foothills a backdrop to another beautiful sunset you thought to yourself, “Let an unforgettable night begin!” From a hearty team of 400 volunteers, nearly 70 hold a highlycoveted spot on our Red Butte Garden Outdoor Concert Series
crew. These folks are not just passionate about music, they also have a deep affection for Red Butte Garden and our community. They planted the daffodils you saw during your spring morning stroll through the Garden, they led a 3rd grade class on a hike through our Natural Area, they told you the name of that one plant you can never remember, but, most of all, they earned their place on this crew through years of dedication and countless hours at the Garden. In fact, most concert volunteers have been a part of this team for well over 10 years. Just last December, we celebrated one volunteer who has been with Red Butte Garden for 20 years. They can regale you with stories of shows before today's luxuries of ticket scanners, real restrooms, or even our current stage, to name a few. Abuzz with an infectious energy, around 35 volunteers report for every concert, most usually arriving for a 5-hour shift after putting in their own 8+ hour work day. Red Butte Garden concert volunteers report as early as two hours before gates open to ensure the venue is ready for your evening. Whether our concert volunteers are assisting at the Will-Call booth, scanning tickets, manning recycling stations, or cleaning up after the show, their positive attitudes, expert dancing skills, and general knowledge of the venue hopefully puts a smile on your face, show after show, year after year. Cumulatively, they see around 90,000 concert-goers a season, and contribute nearly 3,500 hours of their time to your summer nights. www.redbuttegarden.org

This year we’re excited to announce that Intermountain Healthcare will bring a smile to their faces by providing muchneeded support for our concert volunteers! True to their mission of “helping people live the healthiest lives possible,” Intermountain Healthcare will be helping us improve the experiences of not only our volunteers, but all concertgoers. Their contribution will help create a shade structure for ticket takers at the gate, provide healthy food and drinks for the volunteer crew, and support the overall efforts of our volunteers to provide a safe, clean, healthy, and happy environment for our concert guests.
also just as excited to create a great experience for you as you are to be at a Red Butte Garden concert. Let an unforgettable summer begin!
This summer, when you see one of these amazing volunteers donned in their new blue Intermountain Healthcare concert volunteer t-shirts, we hope you say “hi,” and thank them for their tremendous dedication, energy, and time in making Red Butte Garden’s Outdoor Concert Series the outstanding experience we all know and love. They work hard to ensure that you can watch the moon rise over the foothills of this beautiful city to the tunes of world-renowned artists. They are

When our Sundance Institute Summer Film Series partnership began in 2010, we had recently renovated our Amphitheatre and were actively looking for partners that could help us program the new space. We found that our goal to connect people to the Garden through a variety of cultural events closely aligned with the Sundance Institute’s mission to “discover, support, and inspire independent film and theatre artists from the United States and around the world, and to introduce

The first year saw attendance in the 300-400 people per film range; not bad for a first season. That first season focused on four musically themed films in an effort to attract our concert going audience to the screenings. Over the years, we expanded to five films and film genres that appeal to other cultural and geographic interests. In the past six years, attendance numbers ballooned to 2,000 people at some films, but on average 1,000 people per film from varying backgrounds, ethnicities, and ages attend each screening. Join us this July and August for the Sundance Institute Summer Film Series. FREE outdoor community screenings in the Red Butte Garden Amphitheatre. Pack a blanket and a picnic, low-back chairs, and bring your friends to enjoy Sundance Film Festival favorites under the stars. Gates open at 7:30PM and movies begin at dusk. All screenings are free, no ticket needed. Films and dates to be announced in June. More information at www.redbuttegarden.org/sundance

RED BUTTE GARDEN’S LIVING COLLECTIONS
Rose Garden Entrance
By Jason Baker, Curator of Plant Records
B
otanical gardens are museums of living plants. Just as art and archeological artifacts are carefully documented and cataloged at other museums, well documented plant collections are the foundation of any botanical garden. Depending on the vision of the botanical garden, the purpose of plant collections can range from scientific research and conservation, to education and informative displays. To adequately serve their purpose for the scientific community and the public, plant collections need to be correctly identified, documented, mapped, and labeled. When it comes to living plant collections, Red Butte Garden is home to some of the most impressive collections in the Intermountain West.
Butte Garden’s collections provide interest during at least one or two seasons, and some have something to show off year-round. Spring is welcomed with our fantastic Lilac and Viburnum Collections, two of our most resplendent collections. When these are blooming, it’s hard to walk anywhere in the Garden without enjoying the pleasant perfumes from one or both. Their enticing aroma and dazzling display of showy flowers are always a show stopper. To see the greatest concentration of these incredible collections, take a stroll down the Floral Walk.
Summer transitions into our amazing Penstemon and Rose Collections. There are over 280 varieties of While some botanical gardens display Penstemon found in North America, their collections in blocks or rows so individual specimens can be evaluated and Utah is home to the greatest diversity, making Red Butte Garden side by side, Red Butte Garden’s Syringa vulgaris 'Sensation' the perfect place to exhibit their collections are incorporated in designs beauty. Most of our penstemons can be found growing on throughout the Garden, which demonstrate their use in a or adjacent to the Sprout House roof. Others are scattered garden setting. Our exceptional plant collections showcase the throughout the Garden, including the parking lot, and in our diversity of plants that can thrive in our region. Most of Red 8

Arboretum Collection spans not only Red Butte Garden, but also the University of Utah campus and includes over 9,000 trees. There are many varieties of trees that perform well in Utah, from large to dwarf, ornamental to shade, and dry to mesic; as long as prior consideration is given to their specific requirements, such as sun/shade exposure, water requirements, soils and pH.

new Water Conservation Garden that opened to the public on May 20. While roses are planted throughout the Garden, our Rose Collection is located primarily in the Rose Garden. With over 180 different rose varieties, representing 16 different rose classes, our selection of roses demonstrate the diversity of flower form, color, and fragrance, as well as plant size, form, and texture. Once-blooming roses begin the show in early summer, then give way to repeat-blooming varieties that continue until frost. Fall brings cooler temperatures and shorter days, which yields a whole new palate of color in the Garden. The bright colors of summer shift to the vivid hues of fall, and our Ornamental Grass and Arboretum (tree) Collections begin to glow. This time of the year, most of the grasses are at their peak and the trees are putting on a stunning show of colorful foliage. Ornamental Grasses add late season texture and color as well as architectural interest to a garden, just as other plants begin to fade. Like the majority of our collections, you can find great examples of the Ornamental Grass Collection anywhere in the Garden. The
Winter can be a challenge when trying to bring interest to a garden since it is a time when most plants are dormant. Our Conifer and Crabapple Collections do just that. Conifers bring a refreshing touch of green to beautiful winter landscapes and can be incorporated into many landscapes to complement and enhance their surroundings. Like Picea orientallis 'Gowdy' Cone conifers, crabapples possess a wonderful winter attraction all their own, with many holding on to their fruit well into winter. This not only is a delight for our eyes, but an important food source for birds that remain here during the winter. Outstanding examples of our Conifer and Crabapple collections can be found throughout the Garden. While some collections take the spotlight during certain seasons, other collections, such as Utah Native, Ethnobotanical, located predominately in the Herb and Medicinal Gardens, always have a few members showing off in each season. The new Water Conservation Garden allows us to expand several of our plant collections including Utah Native, Lilac, Ornamental Grass, Rose, Conifer, Daylily, Oak, Iris, Salvia, Astragalus, Eriogonum, and Arboretum. Be sure to visit often to watch this fantastic new garden grow! This spring, the Garden was recognized as an official Reference Garden by the American Conifer Society, for our diverse selection of 216 different conifer taxa and our commitment to education regarding this and our other collections. For more information, check out the American Conifer Society at www.conifersociety.org If you are interested in learning more about any of our living plant collections, please visit our Plant Collections page on our website at www.redbuttegarden.org/plant-collections and be sure to check back as we update it with more information about our expanding collections.

NOTES FROM THE FIELD By Bruce Pavlik, Red Butte Garden Conservation Director
W
ith a grant from the State of Utah’s Endangered Species Mitigation Fund, and The Nature Conservancy, Red Butte Garden's Conservation Department spent three weeks in March and April deploying eleven of its Rana pollinator monitoring devices among three populations of Holmgren’s milkvetch (Astragalus holmgreniorum). Holmgren’s milkvetch is a federally listed endangered plant species found only in Washington County, Utah. Sparse populations are scattered to the west and south of St. George, where they are directly impacted by housing development and off-highway vehicle use. Observations made by other scientists have suggested that the native pollinators of this species are also impacted, thus limiting seed set and indirectly contributing to a slow, downward spiral towards extinction. Rana* is an automated, motion-sensitive, time-compressed digital video system that consists of three main components: a web camera, a data logger, and a battery. For each of 61 monitored plants, a very robust sample, Rana condenses 3-4 days and nights of continuous, automated observation into a few hours of video. The video can then be analyzed to determine which pollinators visit flowers, the rate of visitation, how often flowers on the same plant are visited (possibly leading to self-pollination) and when the visits occur. Ultimately the study will help establish a program to stabilize plant populations.
Dr. Sarah Barlow, volunteer Jana Marko, and new research assistant Alyssa Chapman deploy a Rana monitoring unit, with camera hovering over Holmgren’s milkvetch.

Although we have not finished the analysis, it is clear from our initial study, that Holmgren’s milkvetch is visited by a wider array of animals than previously known — including a hummingbird and a vespertine hawk moth. The results will be used to determine the effective size of nature reserves for this species so as to include plants and pollinators within the boundaries. We will also be able to better inform the public about these remarkable interactions literally happening in their own backyards. *More information about Rana and how the Red Butte Garden Conservation Department plans to use the devices can be found in the Red Butte Garden 2016 Winter Newsletter.

FLOWERS OF FEATHERS By Bryn Ramjoué, Director of Communications
Often, we see specific species within a family of bird types such as Flicker, Eastern Kingbird, Red Tail Hawk, quail, Black Capped Chickadee, Towhee, Dark Eyed Junco, Black-headed Grosbeak, Wren, and Swallows. We also see kestrels, jays, Cooper’s Hawk, and in warmer weather, many hummingbirds. Season and degree of foliage on the plants enhance or minimize the ability to see certain birds. When bird watching it’s a good practice to wear muted color clothing and to avoid wearing stark white which may startle many birds. Bring binoculars, a camera, and a guide book. The Garden’s naturalist, Arline, is able to identify various birds by their calls. Audio tools such as smart phone applications are not used on the tours because we don’t want to scare away or stress birds with an aggressor bird sound while we seek to identify a species. The Red Butte Garden Gift Shop has a large selection of birding guides. These books typically use size, and other details such as range or habitat to lead you to the correct identification. You will be joining a large “club,” as birding is the largest spectator sport in America. In Utah, there are more than 300 different kinds of birds recorded by citizen scientists and members of various birding associations.

“Look up, look around, check the sky, and the ground. Speak softly, walk slowly, make no sudden gestures, stop often or find a shady place and sit. Enjoy the Garden.” -Arline Sant, Red Butte Garden Birding Specialist
T
he act of bird watching can be quite poetic. Imagine patiently waiting in the early morning for a glimpse of a beautiful, small, wild animal so colorful it is like a flower made of feathers. At Red Butte Garden, we are fortunate to have birding specialist, Arline Sant, a volunteer who leads Birding Tours on most Wednesday and Saturday mornings from 9 - 11:30AM during the warmer months. The Birding Tour description on our website continues, “Enjoy the Garden’s cool morning breezes and join us for a morning walk full of wildlife activity. Bullock’s Oriole, Western Tanager, Downy Woodpecker, and American Gold Finch are just some of the many birds we’re likely to see.” Several of these birds are common to the Garden and some are permanent residents.
