Stockton Riverside College has always had a hugely successful and vibrant Performing and Creative Arts department. Who can forget performances such as West Side Story, our Production Art displays at Stockton’s Festival of Thrift and our wonderful Summer Film Festivals? So I’m delighted to announce the launch of a new Academy of Performing and Technical Arts (APTA). The Creative Industries are worth more than £130 billion to the UK economy, with the total number of jobs in the UK estimated to be more than 3.2 million or 9.6% of all UK jobs. The Creative sector is also a growing key area in Stockton and across the Tees Valley. It’s one of Stockton Borough Council’s key priority sectors and the Tees Valley Combined Authority also sees Culture and Leisure as one of its emerging key growth sectors alongside Creative and Digital. It’s estimated that there will be over 14,000 jobs predicted in
this sector between now and 2024 across the Tees Valley alone. We have launched APTA to help meet this demand for highly skilled, creative and technical people who are ready to meet the growing demand of this thriving sector. With courses in Art and Design, Fashion and Clothing, Film and TV, Creative Games, Media and Animation, Musical Theatre, Performing Arts starting at Level 2 (GCSE) right up to Degree Level, all taught by our talented team of lecturers who have hands-on experience of the Creative Sector. We are fully prepared to ensure both the regional and national demand for a vibrant creative workforce will be met. I am delighted and privileged to be part of such an exciting initiative that I know will grow and thrive over the coming years. Best wishes, Lesley Graham

Production Arts students turned Stockton Riverside College into a catwalk last summer. Focusing on a different theme every year, students turned to a topic that is at the forefront of Stockton Riverside College’s mind; green issues. Highlighting issues such as pollution, the fur trade and forest fires; students brought their models to life using body paint and props to hammer their message home. When asked about the theme of the event, Makeup for Production Arts teacher, Nina, said: “We were inspired by the work we did last year with the Festival of Thrift around sustainability. It’s a really important issue that’s been brought to light in the last few years and we really wanted to focus on that.” 18
