Trekking Nepal in 2014 For us at Back Track, trekking is our way of life. We always prepare well and are dedicated to ensuring that our trekkers have the holiday of a lifetime. Our trekking itineraries are arranged so we can meet each day’s objective in a leisurely fashion.
As well, a programme for acclimatisation is built into each itinerary so everyone will have the maximum chance to acclimatise to the altitudes in which they are trekking. There is plenty of time to stop and take photographs, rest, or just have a cup of tea with the locals in a village tea house. Our group size is limited to a maximum of 14 trekkers plus our Back Track trekking crew. Having only small groups ensures all trekkers are given maximum attention and assistance when required. Once booked, you will be issued with comprehensive Pre Departure Information detailing your gear and clothing requirements and everything you need to know to ensure you are professionally prepared. In addition, you have access to a trekking expert at any time by calling us on our ‘1300’ Trekkers Assist line, plus, the Clients Login section on our web site and Newsletters will keep you up to date with any important news relating to preparations for your holiday.

LODGE STYLE
CAMP KIT
Our Everest Base Camp and Gokyo Lakes and Everest High Passes treks are conducted in Lodge Style.
To save you money, for the duration of the trek a Camp Kit is provided consisting of a warm sleeping bag, suitable for cold Himalayan nights, and a kit bag to hold your belongings on the trek. The kit bag is carried by your porter.
The Khumbu area of Nepal, home to the Sherpa people, is where these treks takes place. The Sherpas have a long association with western trekkers providing guides and climbing crew for mountaineers way back to the early 1920’s. In their homelands they have built an infrastructure of clean and comfortable lodges in all the major villages and trekking locations. Therefore there is no need to camp on these treks – campsites on our Everest trek are usually in the grounds of a warm, comfortable lodge. Back Track utilises these lodges for accommodation. Rooms are usually twin share with comfortable beds.
FITNESS Both treks are graded challenging, requiring participants to commit to a dedicated training program prior to departure. Depending on your current level of fitness, if you are not as fit as you would like to be, a minimum 3 month program is required to ensure that you are fit enough to enjoy the trek. Back Track willingly provides advice to all our trekkers on how to obtain the required fitness level. Your pre-departure information guide contains extensive fitness training information.

The pine and rhododendron forests that surround the trail provide cooling shade. (BLD) DAY 5: NAMCHE BAZAAR 3440M (3hrs) We reach the fascinating and legendary village of Namche Bazaar, the largest village in the Khumbu area. Our lodge is a short walk from the National Park headquarters and museum. (BLD) DAY 6: REST & ACCLIMATISATION IN NAMCHE BAZAAR We take a rest day in Namche to acclimatise to the higher altitudes. A number of impressive side treks are available. One favourite is to visit the Everest View Hotel, set high on a ridge, for stunning views of Everest, Lhotse, and Ama Dablam. (BLD) DAY 7: DEBOCHE 3770M (5hrs) The trail ascends steeply past the last houses of Namche then traverses high above the Dudh Kosi Valley. We get impressive mountain views along this section of trail before descending to a bridge that crosses the Dudh Kosi at the village of Phunki Tenga. A dusty trail winds up through alpine forest to a large clearing atop a ridge at 3860m. Here we find the most important

Buddhist monastery in the Everest area, Tengboche. There is ample time to rest here and also visit the monastery. The trail then descends through rhododendron and juniper forest to the lovely hamlet of Deboche where we stay overnight. (BLD) DAY 8: DINGBOCHE 4350M (4hrs) A shorter day to assist in acclimatisation. Descend on a gentle slope through a rhododendron forest passing numerous mani walls. Be alert for wildlife; you mays see Nepal’s National Bird, the Danphe pheasant plus musk deer. The trail crosses over the deep, narrow gorge of the Imja Khola before commencing the long, gradual incline to the villages of Lower Pangboche and Upper Pangboche. To the right, on the other side of the valley, looms the distinct, towering shape of Ama Dablam (6860m). The gradient eases and the vegetation thins out as we approach Dingboche. (BLD) DAY 9: REST & ACCLIMATISATION IN DINGBOCHE There are numerous opportunities for acclimatising side treks from here. We can either make a steep, 3 hour ascent to Nangkartshang Peak (5100m), visit high lakes (4700m) at the base of Ama Dablam or trek up to the village of Chukhung (4750m). Each of these excursions gives outstanding views. In most cases we would do the walk in the morning and return to Dingboche by early afternoon then spend the remainder of the day resting. (BLD) DAY 10: LOBUCHE 4940M (4.5hrs) The trail follows a long shelf of land on the Eastern side of the Khumbu Valley then cross a stream coming from the snout of the Khumbu Glacier. It’s then a short ascent on the main trail to Dughla (4600m) where we stop for lunch. The trail then climbs steeply through boulders to reach a number of rock cairns bedecked with prayer flags - memorials to climbers who lost their lives on Mt Everest. From here the elevation eases and crosses to the west side of the valley between a high ridge and the moraine wall of the Khumbu Glacier. Reach our overnight stop at Lobuche by mid afternoon (BLD) DAY 11: GORAK SHEP 5170M & EVEREST BASE CAMP 5360m (8hrs) From Lobuche we trek for 2 hours on a rough, rock strewn trail to Gorak Shep. Khumbu Glacier on the 3 hour trek to Everest Base Camp (5360). There are no views of Everest’s summit from here but there are fine views of the Khumbu Ice Fall and the large seracs of ice on the glacier beside base camp. We retrace our steps to our lodge at Gorak Shep. (BLD). DAY 12: DZONGLA 4850M (4hrs) Our goal today is the highest point of the trek, Kala Pattar, 5554 meters. Kala Pattar is the ideal place to view the dark, menacing South Face of Everest. Surrounded by mountains and glaciers, the breathtaking scenery will truly make you feel “On Top of the World”. Making it to the top of Kala Pattar is a tremendous accomplishment, and for most, a once in a lifetime experience. We depart Gorak Shep well before dawn, walking by the beam of our headlamps. The return walk, plus rest times from Gorak Shep to the top of Kala Pattar is about 3 hours. After returning to Gorak Shep for breakfast, we then retrace our steps past Lobuje before ascending a ridge on the west side of the Khumbu Valley. We reach a high valley at the foot of the magnificent, sheer wall of the north face of Cholatse (6440m). The trail crosses a small stream before ascending gradually to our lodge at Dzongla. (BLD) DAY 13: GOKYO 4750M via CHO LA 5420M (7hrs) Today we prepare to cross Cho La (pass). Depart early for a tough 4 hour climb to the top of Cho La. We pause for a snack and some fantastic photo opportunities. Then it’s a long, slow descent to reach the cluster of hotels at Tagnag (4700m). The trail crosses the lower section of the Ngozumba Glacier, the longest glacier in Nepal, to reach the lodges at Gokyo. (BLD) Note: Crossing Cho La will only be attempted if weather and trail conditions are ideal. There is an alternative trail available if necessary. DAY 14: REST DAY IN GOKYO We take an optional pre-breakfast trek up to Gokyo Ri (5360m), a small peak. The views from here rank with any that trekkers may encounter in Nepal. We get memorable views of four 8,000m peaks—Everest, Cho Oyu, Lhotse and Makalu plus the 3 sacred lakes to the south. We return to our lodge for breakfast. Later in the day, there’s an option to trek further up the Gokyo Valley and enjoy magnificent high altitude lakes and enthralling mountain views. (BLD). DAY 15: MARULUNG 4200M via RENJO LA 5417M (7.5hrs) We’ll make another early start due to the long day ahead. The trail skirts the northern edge of Dudh Pokhari then ascends steeply over gullies and past rock cairns. It will take about 3 hours to reach Rejo La. The glorious views from the pass include Mt Everest. Descend on stone steps to a lake before coming to a wide trail that heads south down the Bhote Kosi Valley. Pass yak grazing areas and small settlements to reach our lodge at Marulung. (BLD) DAY 16: THAME 3800M (2.5hrs) After the previous days exertions we have planned a short, easy day. The trail continues to descend the Bhote Kosi Valley. After spending the previous 8 days at altitudes exceeding 4000m, we’ll appreciate the warmer conditions and increased oxygen. After reaching Thame lodge for lunch, we can relax in the afternoon or visit the nearby Buddhist Monastery.(BLD) DAY 17: NAMCHE BAZAAR 3440M (3hrs) Another short day on the trail. Pass through small Sherpa settlements on a well-used trail. Reach Namche by lunch time and spend the afternoon exploring Namche. There are numerous things to do here - shopping,

RESPONSIBLE TOURISM So what is responsible tourism? In a nutshell it is a company’s commitment to ensure that their impact on the environment and the local culture is as low as possible, whilst helping to generate income and employment for the local people. WHAT: Tourism is one of the fastest growing industries where some of the top holiday destinations are amongst the poorest on the planet. These countries rely heavily on tourism but often the benefits bypass the needy and go straight back into the pockets of westerners. By using a company that is dedicated towards implementing responsible values you can succeed in having a positive impact on the destination you visit. HOW: As a traveller, you have an important role to play in travelling responsibly. Often travellers want to be responsible but are not aware of the issues and the appropriate codes of conduct. These guidelines we have provided are not intended be exhaustive but to highlight a number of issues and provide advice that will help you to: 1. Ensure your own personal safety. 2. Show respect to the local communities, customs and values. If you are unsure or concerned about anything ask your travel consultant, tour leader, guide or local hosts and respect their advice at all times. They are experienced professionals and are there to ensure you enjoy your experience but not at the expense of others or the wildlife you have come to enjoy. ABOUT US: Back Track Adventures has been leading trekking groups to Nepal since 1985. Our commitment to the tenets of responsible tourism is unwavering and we are deeply passionate about people and nature! Keeping our passions close to our heart, we tailor make extraordinary trips to suit extraordinary people. Combine our well-designed trips with responsible travel practices and you have the most irresistible holiday package. We aim to exceed your expectations, with the utmost regard for your safety, minimising the impact on our environment and at the same time maximising contribution to the local economy.
ENVIRONMENT WATER: Minimise your water usage by reporting dripping taps, never leave the tap running and turn off tightly after use. Think before requesting clean bath towels. Never contaminate natural water sources with litter, chemicals or human waste. Remember this could be someone else’s drinking water. ENERGY REDUCTION: Take hot showers only when the water is heated by renewable energy sources. An average shower heated by a wood-burning stove contributes to the destruction of local forest. When lodge trekking, order the same meal at the same time as other trekkers. The Nepalese national dish of dal bhat is a good option. WASTE MANAGEMENT: Where possible remove all unnecessary packaging before you leave. Trekkers leave behind approximately 100,000kg of water bottles per year. Plastic bottles CANNOT be recycled in Nepal. Instead use a canteen, iodine purification tablets, a Steripen or alternatively fill up at one of the drinking water stations for a small fee. Pick up your litter as you would at home. Not only is it unsightly, it can be deadly to wild animals.
Our Nepal Crew Back Track Adventures is one of the few Australian trekking companies to have an office in Nepal. This allows us to manage our own ground operations more effectively. When you arrive at Kathmandu airport, you will be met by our staff and from that point until we place you back on the plane to return home, you will be in the safe hands of our trekking team. Back Track Adventures is one of the most experienced Nepal trekking operators.

GENERAL ETIQUETTE: On the whole the Nepalese are a relaxed nation, however, there are a few general etiquette points to be aware of. • Pointing the soles of your feet at someone or touching someone’s head or cap is offensive • Take off your shoes before entering someone’s home. • Public displays of affection, such as kissing and hugging, are considered offensive • Do not handle anybody else’s food, eat off another’s plate or drink from another’s glass RELIGIOUS ETIQUETTE: Always ask for permission before entering a Hindu temple, taking photos of the temple or its surroundings. Take off your shoes before entering and always pass a prayer wall on your right or walk around it in a clockwise direction. DRESS CODE: Many of the people of Kathmandu are becoming more westernised in the way that they dress; however many are still fairly conservative, especially in the villages. Dress as not to attract attention to yourself. PHOTOGRAPHY: Always be polite and respectful to local people by asking before taking their picture. If people seem reluctant or look away then don’t take the photo. When photographing children, ask for their parents’ consent first. We strongly discourage payments being made for the privilege of taking a photograph, as this constitutes a form of begging.
PEOPLE
DONATIONS & GIFTS: The giving of money and sweets does not help in the long-term and only perpetuates an underlying problem. If you are able, make a donation to a local community development project in the area you have visited. Channel this through the trek leader or guide and it will go to the right hands and follow the correct process.
CULTURAL: Your trek leader, guide and/or local hosts will brief you on the cultural sensitivities specific to the area that you are visiting and how you can minimise potential negative impacts of your behaviour.
SOUVENIRS: Buy locally made crafts and support local skills.
WILDLIFE: Do not buy souvenirs made from endangered species, like ivory; doing so will only encourage the trade.
It is easy to appear an arrogant, rich foreigner in a small community, so be aware of the feelings of others. Learning even a little of the local language can help reduce these barriers. Try to avoid extravagant displays of wealth. This can be an incitement to robbery, as well as accentuating the gap between rich and poor. Everest High Passes | Everest Base Camp & Gokyo Lakes 2014
ECONOMY BARGAINING: Bargaining for a lower price is often the accepted and expected custom, but don’t drive a hard bargain just for the sake of it. FOOD: Try the local food and specialties. Many rural areas are under threat from a reduction in the agricultural base. Eating locally produced goods helps the local farmers and economy. Back Track Adventures | Page 9
