Dear Parents and Caregivers,
Four-day working weeks are taking off, and all the teachers certainly enjoyed the last two weeks of school this term in the lead-up to the April holiday. Reports are being written, and Year 12 assessments are being marked as we lead into the Autumn break.
The thrill and subsequent post-performance blues felt by all the cast, crew, and teachers are real, and I empathise with them as I remain in awe of the performances of The Music Man This performance was an event on the school calendar of which the entire Reddam Community is proud, and once more, I thank all involved.
On Wednesday evening, we held the Finals of our 2024 Vocal Competition. This was the final round of the competition, which in its first stages saw over 100 students submit video entries to be assessed by an external adjudicator. The highest overall marks were selected to perform live, and our esteemed adjudicator was Dr Anke Hoeppner-Ryan, Chair of Voice at the Sydney Conservatorium of Music, University of Sydney. Please see below for a list of the results, and enjoy a selection of photos and film from the evening. We are very proud of all our singers for delivering mature and technically sound performances and giving the packed Adelaide Hall audience a chance to enjoy such fine music-making. We also thank Jake Jadouin (Year 6 Senator), Arki Prasad (Year 9 Judiciary), and Milly Golovsky (Year 12 Judiciary) for hosting the event.
Congratulations to the following students on their outstanding performances, which were rated the best by our adjudicator.
Year 7 to Year 9
• Gold: Billie Snow
• Silver: Elise Allen
• Bronze: Sylvie Pasvolsky
Year 10 to Year 12
• Gold: Jovan Vucic

On Thursday, the Year 7 Hebrew and Jewish Studies students were engaged in the Model Matzah Bakery, which gave them insight into Jewish heritage and culture. We include more on this below.
Year 7 Art students completed a painting unit of work entitled ‘Good Enough to Eat’ and Year 8 Art students have completed their sculptures inspired by 'Pop Art'. They really are a very talented year group who have learnt so much about colour mixing and how to apply the paint to create different textures of their treats. Ms Bub has shared some of the finished products for the newsletter.
During the April holiday, several school tours are taking place, including the Northern Territory trip with Mrs Pelosi and Ms Knight. The Dance held on Thursday night in aid of the Northern Territory was an excellent way for middle school students to celebrate the end of a jam-packed Term 1 and raise funds for the cause they support while on their trip. I thank the many sponsors of the evening: Dominos for the pizzas, Cha Time for the bubble teas, Bakers Delight for the baked goods, and Coles for the gift voucher. This meant that all money raised was a profit. Congratulations to Maya Fransi, who has run the dance with the help of the Events and Charity portfolios and the students going to the Northern Territory.
Their community project will be at a Kangaroo Orphanage. They will also hike through Flinders Rangers, experience an underground bunkhouse in Cooper Pedy, enjoy a road trip through the Red Centre, and trek the Kings Canyon.

Last Saturday Reddam Basketball's two teams, both under the leadership of Head Coach Johnny Jovine, competed in the finals of their respective competitions against Moriah.
Girls Team: The girls, having been defeated by Moriah in the round-robin games, entered the semi-finals with steely determination. Leveraging strong defense to pave the way for their offense, the girls clinched victory with a score of 16-9. The Grand Final is slated for next week at St Catherine's at 8:05 PM against St Catherines. Best of luck to our girls – let's aim to bring home two banners this year!
Boys 1st V: In a gripping basketball match against Moriah, our boys showed determination, sprinting to a 20-3 lead within 5 minutes. Despite Moriah's fierce 3-point shooting, our team's solid defense and quick counterattacks maintained their lead. They clinched the CDSSA championship with a score of 90-75, ending three years of finals without a win. Special acknowledgment to departing players Ben Baldwin, Nathan Galper, Nicholas Alexiou, and Thomas Malki for their commitment, setting high standards for new players. Nathan Galper also earned the title of Defensive Player of the Tournament.
The Hamilton Island Art Retreat with Mrs Symonds has students from Year 7 to Year 10 attending. Furthermore, there are daily themes, and the students do extra drawings and are judged each night at dinner. In addition, the students can enter their works into the Waverley Youth Art Prize 2024"Mysteries of the Deep.”
Reports will be available on the Parent Portal by Tuesday for Years 7 - Year 11.
Year 12 Reports will be available in the second week of next term as their assessments continue until the last day of school.

Purim & Matza Factory
Last Thursday, the Year 7 Hebrew students experienced a hamantaschen bake on the rooftop during their lesson. The hamantaschen bake was for Purim (Jewish festival). The Jems team came in with their ready-made dough and their ovens. As all the Year 7 Hebrew students sat down, the Hamantaschen’s were baking. The Jems program told all the students about the story of Purim, and why the word “Hamantaschen” is called Hamantaschen. We learnt that Purim is a joyous Jewish festival. We celebrate it because of the commemoration of the survival of Jews who were marked for death by their Persian rulers. The story of Purim is based around a Jewish woman called Esther, who hid her identity of being a Jew. She lived with her uncle who was basically a Jewish leader. The king in her town had just persecuted his wife and searched for a new wife. Not knowing Esther was Jewish, he chose her. His top advisor, who we call ‘Haman’ decided he wanted to persecute all jews, also not knowing Esther was a Jew. Later, Esther came forward to the king telling him that his supervisor was trying to kill her and her people.
Being Esther’s husband, he put a stop to this, he killed Haman and Esther's uncle took the role of advisor. All was well and they ended up with Jewish role models. Here is where we found out why we call “Hamantaschen”, Hamantaschen. This word originates from the Hebrew words “Ozney Haman” meaning the ears of Haman. This is because Hamans ears were seen to be shaped as triangles as well as his hat. This iswhy we bake triangular cookies on Purim and call them “Hamantaschens” . - Lucia Perczuk, Year 7
As Pesach is coming up on the 22nd of April the Hebrew class was fortunate enough to bake matzah to commemorate the Jewish people leaving Egypt 3000 years ago and the miracle of Passover. In the session of baking the matzah we were taught on how to make it and why we need to make it quickly. We first mixed and created the dough in a bowl then flattened it out into a very thin piece. Everyone started making the holes in the dough and then quickly put it in the oven to bake. We learned how to bake matzah and why we celebrate this occasion. We celebrate the week of Passover by avoiding leaven, which is highlighted by Seder meals that include four cups of wine, eating matzah and bitter herbs, and retelling the story of the Exodus from slavery in Egypt. We eat matzah as Matzah was made from the Jews when they didn’t have enough time to bake the bread as they were fleeing from Egypt and the bread flattened and baked in the sun as they were in a rush. This is because they were worried about getting caught. We learnt all of this while baking matzot. We all had a great time on this incursion and would like to wish everyone great holidays and happy Pesach to all those who celebrate! - Maytal Goodman, Year 7

2025 admissions
Applications for 2025 entry open on 3 April for domestic students and 17 April for international students. UAC will email UAC PINs to all NSW HSC and ACT BSSS students on 3 April. Students will need their NESA or BSSS student number and their UAC PIN to apply through UAC.
Interstate and IB students should wait until 1 August to apply as UAC won't receive their student data until later in the year. I'll let you know if this changes.
Access schemes
When applications for admission open, so will applications for the Schools Recommendation Scheme (SRS) and the Educational Access Scheme (EAS). This year there are a few changes.
SRS application changes
The SRS application is now part of the undergraduate application, similar to EAS. Once a student submits their undergraduate application, they can follow a link to SRS: there will no longer be a standalone application accessible from the UAC website.
Students will be asked to confirm that their school name is correct. If a student needs to upload their Year 11 results, they will be prompted to do so.
EAS process change for schools
This year we will not accept emailed educational impact statements (EIS). However, if you cannot give the EIS to the student to upload to their EAS application, you will be able to upload it through the School Access portal (where you now complete SRS ratings). More details will come soon.
In 2023, an increased number of applicants provided EIS from people not considered ‘responsible persons’ (eg parents, other relatives, gardeners, cleaners). This year we will add the definition of a responsible person to each document package.
EIS must be completed by the school principal, counsellor, year adviser, teacher or careers adviser. If this is not possible it must be completed by a responsible person, such as a doctor, lawyer, social worker, counsellor, or community or religious leader who has knowledge of the circumstances and the effect on the student's studies.
Finally, a reminder that EAS is only used for ATAR-based offers unless otherwise specified.
UAC publications
Another reminder: as advised in my April 2023 email, UAC is no longer producing the UAC Guide. All information about the next admissions cycle will be updated on the UAC website from April.
If students would like a printed information booklet, they can pick up a copy of Steps to Uni for Year 11 and 12 Students from one of the many expos we'll be attending this year. If you are from an interstate school, we'll be bringing Applying to NSW and ACT Universities with us to the VCE and Careers Expo in Melbourne, TSXPO in Brisbane and the TIS roadshow in Tasmania.
Steps to Uni for Year 11 and 12 Students will not be sent out to schools but it can be downloaded from the UAC website if needed.
Steps to Uni for Year 10 Students will still be printed and one copy for each Year 10 student will be sent to all NSW schools in early Term 2, as usual.
LIVE webinar for Year 12 students
Our expert speakers will equip students with the knowledge to make the most of their application and maximise their chances of success. Please encourage your students not to miss this opportunity to get ahead with their university application.
