Reddam House High School Newsletter
Dear Parents and Caregivers,
Welcome back to a wet start to Term 2. Students on both campuses seem reinvigorated, excited to be back, and ready to jump into all this term holds.
Holiday activities that students enjoyed included:
Over the April break, a group of Reddam’s art students ranging from Years 8 to 11 travelled to Hamilton Island; one of the most magnificent destinations in Australia. This trip included practical workshops, sightseeing throughout the island, as well as visiting the Island’s gallery for inspiration and working with the artist in residence which further developed their practical artmaking techniques. Each day the students were drawing, painting and photographing the landscape. The weather was absolutely magnificent and we could not have asked for a more cooperative and enthusiastic group of students!
The Northern Territory Trip was an experience like no other. For 11 days during the April School Holidays, 13 of our students embarked on an epic community service trip that took them through the middle of Australia from Adelaide to Alice Springs. These students worked hard throughout the year by running various fundraisers and managed to raise nearly $6000 for a Kangaroo Orphanage in Coober Pedy and also help support a sustainable orchard for a remote indigenous community in the Northern Territory. They volunteered at the orphanage to help care for the orphaned kangaroos, paint the facilities and prune overgrown trees. They hiked the majestic Flinders Ranges, visited sacred indigenous sites like Uluru and Kata Tjuta and slept under the stars to the sounds of dingos in Kings Canyon. The students were mesmerized when learning about ancient dreamtime stories, ate bush tucker, and were lucky enough to come home with some beautiful opals. The tour was a huge success and will run again next
year. All students in Year 7-11 are encouraged to join in this fantastic opportunity Expressions of interest should be directed to Ms. Pelosi or Ms Knight. The Reddam House Debating Academy BP program team of Will Barouch and Lila Macpherson returned from the Oxford International Competition for Young Debaters (under-16 debaters) with unbelievably outstanding accolades, a testament to their dedication and burgeoning talent in the art of debating. After defeating 52 of the best teams from the Australasian Eastern Region, they made it to the regional grand finals, an incredible achievement in itself; this earned them the invitation to then compete internationally among the top 52 regional grand finalist teams from across the globe. They finished 4th in this competition, which is a remarkable achievement. The competition was an intellectual marathon featuring various complex and thought-provoking topics. Debaters tackled issues from the economics of sports clubs to the impact of feminist movements on international relations and even debated a hypothetical decline of U.S. global dominance. Each round allowed our team to engage critically with contemporary global issues, enhancing their analytical skills and strategic thinking.
Beyond the rigours of debating, the team immersed themselves in the academic and cultural life of Oxford and London. They explored the historic Oxford University, humorously contemplating which
college might one day offer them scholarships, thanks to their debating achievements. In London, the team unwound by exploring the vibrant Covent Garden and visiting the British and Science Museum, enriching their understanding of world history and science. A notable highlight was the opportunity to debate in the iconic Oxford Union Parliamentary Hall.
Enhancing their competitive edge, the team participated in a workshop with a World Universities Debating Championship (WUDC) finalist debater from Oxford. This experience refined their debating techniques and inspired them, as this accomplished debater has now joined Reddam House as a fulltime coach. Mr. Feller is congratulated on the increased standard and popularity of debating at Reddam. He commented that he could not have been more proud of the two students for everything they did while representing their school.
Bally Napthali did the Level 3 Intensive Ballet at the Australian Ballet School in Melbourne over the break, followed by more classes with them in Sydney over the last week.
On Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday evenings, Year 11 Drama Students performed two exhilarating plays: 'DNA' by Dennis Kelly and 'Stuff' by Tom Wells, at the Middle School Drama Studio, Woollahra. 'DNA' focused on the dark themes of cruelty, bullying, peer pressure, and pack mentality, while 'Stuff' was about friendship and loss – and how people try to do the right thing for their mates when there isn't a right thing to do. Both plays were skilfully directed by their teachers, Will Hodgson and Megan Glisenan, and they all delivered outstanding performances. Congratulations to all the students involved!
On the Sports front:
We wish the following students very well as they embark upon the NSWCIS Swimming Championships next week
Chloe Goldin will be swimming in the 50m breaststroke. Chloe won this event at Reddam, CDSSA, and AICES.
Maya Antonir will be swimming the 200m backstroke. Maya goes into this as the third-ranked from AICES and has been swimming at this event for the past five years.
Oliver Charles will be representing AICES in Touch Football. Oliver is only 14 and has made the 15s team. Outstanding Achievement, Oliver.
Congratulations to Gia Maragiannis on her NSWCIS Under 19 Women's Volleyball Team selection. Gia has worked extremely hard to advance her skills over the years she has played volleyball, and this selection is a huge achievement, particularly considering that she only turned 15 this week.
Jazz Spira attended her last NSW state interschools, competing in the highest level of 1.20m for secondary school, where she achieved 3rd place. The following week, she trekked to Queensland to attend the Larapinta World Cup Show All the best juniors from up and down the country participated in this event, competing in the Junior Championships. They were challenged with the technical World Cup track. Jazz and her horse were one of only 16 combinations out of 55 in the first round to jump clear. An unfortunate couple of rails in the 1.35m jump off put them into 11th place overall and 3rd place for NSW - an admirable effort considering this was the highest either Jazz or her horse has jumped to date. Well done, Jazz.
Tomi Reynaldo travelled to Adelaide to compete at the Australian Junior Track & Field Championships in the U17 400m Hurdles. Tomi won in a time of 55.45 and was crowned National Champion. That is an incredible achievement; well done, Tomi.

Congratulations to Liam McMaster on his NSW Under 17 Men's Soccer Team selection. Liam will play Goal Keeper for NSW in July this year. He has worked hard for this achievement over the past couple of years, and his dedication and commitment have paid off.
Jacob Hazan, one of our leading board riders in our advanced surf programme that runs out of Bronte Beach, locked into some awesome barrels over the break at Sumba. All Advanced Surfers stay tuned as we are about to launch into sessions out at the new wave pool at Homebush.
In preparation for this term, parents were emailed the following information.
• Term 2 Calendar
• Semester 1 Tutorial Times
• Assessment Schedule
• Half-Yearly Examination Timetable
These and all other necessary documents will be stored and updated regularly in your Parent Portal.
On Thursday, next week, Year 7 parents and students are invited to a Study Skills presentation by Dr Prue Salter in Adelaide Hall at 6:30 pm. This interactive session will achieve the maximum value if the students and a parent attend. The evening will outline tools and techniques for students to achieve their personal academic best.
