Reddam House High School Newsletter Volume 24, Issue 2 | 9th February 2024

Dear Parents and Caregivers,

The Year has started well, with students in Year 7, Year 8, and Year 9 returning from Camp ready to get into the swing of things. Years 10, 11, and 12 have been motivated by witnessing the results of the Year 12 Class of 2023 in the Dux assembly last Friday and are eager to emulate them.

This weekend, our Chinese students will celebrate Chinese New Year. They celebrate the Year of the Dragon this year, symbolising strength, prosperity, and good fortune. The dragon, revered for its wisdom and ambition, inspires us to pursue our goals fearlessly. Chinese New Year is an opportunity for us all to unite, embrace different traditions, and foster unity. It's a time of joy, reunion, and fresh beginnings.

Chinese New Year, also known as chūn jié (春节, the Spring Festival), falls on the 10th of February this year, which, according to the Chinese lunar calendar, marks the beginning of the Year of the Dragon.

Chinese international students and Year 12 senior executives adorned the Bondi campus with Chinese New Year decorations including couplets, knots, and lanterns.

Year 7, Year 8, and Year 9 Chinese Continuers were given 红包 (hóng bāo, red envelope) with chocolate coins inside. Year 7 and Year 8 Chinese Continuers did paper cutting of the Chinese character “春” (chūn, spring). Year 9 Chinese Continuers did paper cutting of the Chinese character “福” (fú, fortune) and made lanterns. They learned the cultural significance of these symbolic Chinese New Year items.

The Duke of Edinburgh’s International Award is offered at Reddam House. The Duke of Ed is a noncompetitive self-development program available to all young people. It encourages them to set and achieve goals at a level appropriate to their needs and aspirations. Participants learn a new skill, improve their physical well-being, volunteer in their community, and experience a team adventure in a new environment.

For introductory information regarding Award structure and requirements, please refer to the online information session, which can be accessed on the Reddam House website https://www.reddamhouse.com.au/education/duke-of-edinburgh-award

A registration session for students occurred at 2:30 pm on Friday, February 9th, in the Dance Studio of the Woollahra Campus. If you have any questions, please contact Emily Knight via her email address: emily.knight@reddamhouse.com.au

The Duke of Edinburgh's International Award - Australia (NSW Division) is hosting a Gold Award Ceremony on Thursday 21 March 2024. We congratulate Jaiden Chee of the HSC Class of 2023, who will receive this prestigious award on this date from Her Excellency the Honourable Margaret Beazley AO KC, Governor of New South Wales.

There are currently 25 positions available for Year 8 and Year 9 students interested in joining the Philosophy Club starting next week. Philosophy Club is tightly interwoven with the Year 8 and 9 IIC topics, which are philosophical. It will be held ONE lunchtime per week (Thursdays) in Room 4.8. If any Year 8 or Year 9 student would like to be a member, please answer the question, Are animals as important as humans?, in a minimum 250-word response attached as a Google Doc file and shared with Mrs Guinea. The best 25 responses will secure a place in this prestigious club.

On Tuesday evening, the Year 10 Parents were hosted at the Bondi Campus for an Information sharing cocktail party. There was a fantastic turnout of parents who enjoyed the opportunity to meet the Year Coordinators and the Year 10 mentors and socialise together while having the chance to see the campus for themselves and hear the expectations that we have of their children. On Monday night, the HSC Showcase Launch and Preview was held. It was an extraordinary evening held at the Roslyn Packer Theatre in Walsh Bay, and it was lovely to see all of the students from around NSW performing in Callback, Onstage, and Encore next week receive recognition for their incredible achievement. It was an extraordinary and proud moment to see Zach Simmons featured in the evening. There were over 650 Callback nominations given, and only 38 were selected. Zach was then one of only two chosen from this elite group to perform at the launch. He has also been asked to film a Showcase Masterclass where he will share his choreographic process and insights into his experience of HSC Dance. This video will allow current and future HSC students to watch and gain tips as they enter their HSC journey. It was also great to see Carlos Sanson (HSC Class of 2016) MCing the evening. He mentioned his time at Reddam quite a lot throughout the night and with lots of affection for the school. It made me feel very proud of our community. To crown this achievement for Zach, he has won the Rolf Prince Scholarship to study for a Bachelor of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering degree at Sydney University. What a great all-rounder of whom we are exceptionally proud.

Student accolades this week include:

We are thrilled to announce that The Hills Shire Council has awarded Aiza (HSC 2022), Abdullah (Year 10), and Aish Khurram (Year 6) Citizen of the Year-Youth Award. Since the tender ages of 11, 7, and 3, these incredible students have been spreading kindness through Little Helpers. Their commitment goes beyond their years, setting an example for everyone around them. Having visited over 80 nursing homes since 2016 and participated in numerous local projects, this young team has become invaluable members of Little Helpers' family. We thank older adults and staff, particularly those from Bupa Aged Care and SummitCare, who nominated these children. Their weekly involvement in charitable initiatives across Sydney and even participation in global initiatives is a testament to their dedication. Please find the link to social media posts. Oliver Sacks, who is in the Australian Schoolboys U16 soccer squad, toured the UK during the holidays. In their first game, they beat England Independent Schoolboys 4-1. We look forward to hearing how the rest of the tour went.

Alexis Vella, who received a workshop scholarship with PAC (Performance Artist Company). She was selected as their Star Performer.

Year 11 and Year 12 Art students have been visiting Art Express to see the expected standard of works of excellence from the HSC, the best of 2023. The Year 12 students also leave today for their annual Art Retreat to Hobart, where they visit MONA and engage in other exciting and engaging activities. We will report on that trip in next week’s newsletter.

The team of Milly, Sam, Alex, and the Executive is introducing Spirit Week next week on the Bondi campus. Each day will have a different event/activity run by a diverse portfolio from Monday to Thursday. Here's the schedule:

New admission scheme: Regional and Remote Entry Scheme The Regional and Remote Scheme – for domestic students residing in or attending a school in a regional or remote area – offers admission to a Sydney Uni undergraduate degree on a reduced ATAR. Students are also encouraged to submit an application to be considered for scholarships through the University's new single scholarship application form. Applications close 29 September and students must also have the University of Sydney listed as a preference on this date. Please note: most accommodation scholarships still require a separate application through the relevant college website. MySydney Entry and Scholarship Scheme MySydney offers eligible students residing in a low socio-economic areas entry on a reduced ATAR, an $8,500 per annum scholarship for the duration of their undergraduate degree and additional support. Students simply submit a UAC application and list the University of Sydney as a preference. If the student is eligible, we will notify them via email on the dates listed on the MySydney website. Welcome to the Class of 2024 Schools Recommendation Scheme A big thank you to all schools for completing your SRS ratings on time through the new School Access portal. We appreciate your patience while we try to make the process as easy as we can for you. Now that it's complete and you have used School Access it's a good time for feedback on how you found the experience. All feedback can be emailed to srs@uac.edu.au. Educational Access Scheme Thursday 23 November is the deadline for all EAS applications, including documents, to be submitted for guaranteed consideration in the first ATAR-based offer round on 21 December. Below is a link to the short 'How to apply for the Educational Access Scheme' video. Watch and share the video: How to apply for EAS

Applications Applications are still steadily rolling in. Many people ask about the benefits of applying through UAC compared to applying directly to an institution for an early offer, so here are a few key points: •

Not all courses are available for early offers.

An early offer is not guaranteed.

A UAC application provides more options for preferences.

Students who have experienced difficulties/disadvantages in Year 11 or 12 can have their circumstances taken into account through an EAS application.

Students should make the most of their options and list different course preferences in their UAC application and their direct application. However, if they miss out on an early offer from a direct application they can add that course preference to their UAC application and compete for an offer based on their ATAR. The majority of students will be made an offer based on their ATAR and the hard work they have put into their Year 12 studies.

Preferences While attending uni open days this year, the UAC Community Engagement team has answered many questions from students about how to list their preferences. In some cases a university has told them they need to list a course as their number one preference in order to receive an offer, but the course is not their first choice. Students should always: •

place their dream course as their first preference

include a back-up course as a lower preference.

And they should find out: •

the previous lowest selection ranks for the course – is it a realistic choice?

if they are eligible for any adjustment factors.
