Reddam House High School Newsletter Volume 24, Issue 3 | 16th February 2024

Dear Parents and Caregivers,

It has been the week of love, with both Bondi and Woollahra campuses getting right into celebrating Valentine’s Day on Wednesday. It saw the launch of the Bondi Sound Sessions - a lunchtime open mic concert event for any students who want to get together with friends and prepare band pieces to perform. Seeing such energy and enthusiasm from the performers and the audience of students from Years 10-12 watching from the grassy amphitheatre was uplifting. This popular event will now be held monthly, and students can sign up for a spot in the next session by scanning the QR code on the music noticeboard near B9, or they can contact Mrs Wood for any questions. At the Woollahra campus, candy grams were sold and distributed by the energetic romantics in Year 9.

At the Bondi Campus, the Year 12 Judiciary arranged Spirit Week, including Wellbeing Day, Lunar New Year celebrations, Valentine’s Day, and Sports Day. All funds raised during the week went to the HeartKids Foundation. All had a fantastic week, with the rain dampening their spirits slightly on Sports Day due to the cancelled dodgeball games.

Our HSC artists travelled to Hobart to have an experience at the Museum of Old and New Art (MONA). The students were enthralled, surprised, and delighted by the artworks and installations they experienced inside the architectural gallery space and at GASP - Glenorchy Art & Sculptural Park. Our artists also had a cultural engagement with Hobart as they journeyed to the Cascade Female Factory, where they watched a live theatrical performance of ‘The Proud & the Punished’, Mount Nelson, the Salamanca Markets, Sandy Bay, Battery Point, and the TMAG (Tasmania Museum and Art Gallery). Our artists completed one of their HSC Case Studies while at MONA and used the artists to influence their own art practice and development of their HSC Bodies of Works - a phenomenal trip was had by all.

This week, Mr Hodgson and Ms Gilsenan accompanied Drama students from Years 11 and 12 to OnStage at the Seymour Centre in Chippendale. It was an excellent opportunity to watch last year's exemplary HSC Individual and Group Performances selected from schools across New South Wales. There was much talk and discussion at the end of the evening as students felt inspired and excited to see such impressive work. This experience will stand our students in good stead as they create their HSC performances this year and next.

On Monday, some of our talented music students performed on stage at Westfield Bondi Junction before Jessica Mauboy's album launch that afternoon. What a great opportunity and experience for our performers.

The Year 9 and Year 11 Parent Information evenings on Monday and Tuesday, respectively, were well attended and enjoyed by the teachers and parents. The final two evenings of this nature will be next week on Tuesday and Wednesday for the Year 7 and Year 8 parents to meet the team of teachers who care for their children and get to know their child’s cohort of parents. The pastoral program has workshops organised for Year 7, 8, and 9 students on Friday which include:

The Year 7 students participated in the workshop ‘Like Me Talk– Impacts of Social Media on Mental Health’ by Rachel Clark. The Like Me Project was created to empower young people with social media literacy education and tools to boost their digital well-being. The Like Me Talk is a dedicated student talk + Q&A session that explores the business model of social media apps and the attention economy, as well as the underlying psychological processes and impacts of these apps on the students’ brains and wellbeing. During this interactive session, students were equipped with strategies to help them cultivate a

healthy, conscious relationship with social media. For further resources on this topic, check out https://www.esafety.gov.au/parents

The Year 8 students participated in a ‘Friendship Tips for Teens’ workshop by URStrong. In this workshop, students learn what to expect in their friendships through The 4 Friendship Facts, applying these ‘truths’ in friendship to their real lives. Using the Friend-o-Meter, students reflect on the health of their friendships & Friendship Groups. They learn how to manage conflict (in-person and online), exploring the different approaches for responding to Friendship Fires versus Mean-on-Purpose behaviour. Students learned how to apply these friendship strategies to other relationships in their lives.

The Year 9 students participated in consent workshops delivered by Elephant Ed, a leading sexuality and relationships education provider to hundreds of schools around Australia. The students participated in Consent workshops, with key learning outcomes being:

Legalities, including the age of consent and free agreement

Essential elements requirements for valid consent, including verbal and nonverbal communication

Critical analysis of consent in the media

The importance of respecting boundaries

Avenues to seek help if required

Following these three workshops, we encourage parents to talk with their children by asking them about what they learned and continuing the discussion at home. The Year 9 Judiciary and Junior Executive were announced in the assembly today. I would like to congratulate these students and offer them my encouragement and support as they take on the leadership within the Middle School.

Music News

Thank you to all our students for another busy week in the music department. The highlight was undoubtedly our students performing on stage at Westfield Bondi Junction as the warm-up to Jessica Mauboy's album launch. Several of our advanced singers had the opportunity to present their pieces for a warm and supportive (and large) environment. We are so proud of our students and happy to continue our partnership with Westfield. We also thank the musicians who have been presenting sets at our parent evenings, Natasha Green and Tadhg Kalowski, for donating their time and sharing their remarkable talents. Please see below for two important links. The first is the Term 1 Performance Opportunities link, which closes today. The 2nd is for our 2024 Vocal Competition (Unamplified). Please click on the links below to read more about requirements and due dates. Welcome to the Class of 2024 Schools Recommendation Scheme A big thank you to all schools for completing your SRS ratings on time through the new School Access portal. We appreciate your patience while we try to make the process as easy as we can for you. Now that it's complete and you have used School Access it's a good time for feedback on how you found the experience. All feedback can be emailed to srs@uac.edu.au. Educational Access Scheme Thursday 23 November is the deadline for all EAS applications, including documents, to be submitted for guaranteed consideration in the first ATAR-based offer round on 21 December. Below is a link to the short 'How to apply for the Educational Access Scheme' video. Watch and share the video: How to apply for EAS

Applications Applications are still steadily rolling in. Many people ask about the benefits of applying through UAC compared to applying directly to an institution for an early offer, so here are a few key points: •

Not all courses are available for early offers.

An early offer is not guaranteed.

A UAC application provides more options for preferences.

Students who have experienced difficulties/disadvantages in Year 11 or 12 can have their circumstances taken into account through an EAS application.

Students should make the most of their options and list different course preferences in their UAC application and their direct application. However, if they miss out on an early offer from a direct application they can add that course preference to their UAC application and compete for an offer based on their ATAR. The majority of students will be made an offer based on their ATAR and the hard work they have put into their Year 12 studies.

Preferences While attending uni open days this year, the UAC Community Engagement team has answered many questions from students about how to list their preferences. In some cases a university has told them they need to list a course as their number one preference in order to receive an offer, but the course is not their first choice. Students should always: •

place their dream course as their first preference

include a back-up course as a lower preference.

And they should find out: •

the previous lowest selection ranks for the course – is it a realistic choice?

if they are eligible for any adjustment factors.
