Reddam House High School Newsletter Volume 24, Issue 6 | 8th March 2024

Dear Parents and Caregivers,

Today is International Women's Day, and we call for a gender-equal world. A world free of bias, stereotypes, and discrimination. A world that's diverse, equitable, and inclusive. A world where difference is valued and celebrated. Today, we celebrate women's achievements. Raise awareness about discrimination. Take action to drive gender parity. We celebrate all the women in our lives: mothers, teachers, sisters, and friends, and reflect on how these relationships positively impact our lives Happy International Women’s Day. Let’s Inspire Inclusion.

We're very proud to announce that Parisa Azad has been awarded the 'NSW Woman of the Year Award 2024' in the ‘One to Watch’ category. Yesterday she was presented the award at a ceremony held at ICC Sydney by NSW Minister for Women, Jodie Harrison in the presence of Premiere of NSW Chris Minns and Governor of NSW Margaret Beazley amongst others.

You can read more about Parisa's fantastic work here.

Thirty-nine Year 8 and Year 9 students enjoyed last weekend's Drama Camp at the Collaroy Centre, Collaroy. They participated in 2 days of Drama workshops on Improvisation, Physical Theatre skills, Playbuilding, and Shakespeare. The students extended their Drama skills by learning from visiting professional actors and theatre practitioners. Congratulations, students, on your enthusiasm and commitment. You created some outstanding moments of performance. I thank Mr. Hodgson, Ms. Gilsenan, and Ms. Sarzosa for creating this opportunity for our younger students.

A message from our Year 12 Executive about their fundraising initiative:

“Reddam is participating in the World’s Greatest Shave in under two weeks. Thousands of Australians make it their mission to help beat blood cancer each March by getting sponsored to shave, colour, or cut their hair. A group of students will participate by shaving or cutting their hair alongside our teachers, who dye their hair pink. We would love your help in reaching (and exceeding) our goal of $8,000.

How to help:

1. Through online donations. You can donate online to the Reddam House Team

2. Sharing this link to family and friends to donate, every dollar counts.

Thank you from Milly, Sam, and Alex.”

Continuing with the Charity and Community Service theme, our students will go to the Northern Territory to better understand Aboriginal culture and get involved in a community project with a Kangaroo Orphanage in April. They held a sausage sizzle on Thursday, and I had never seen such fantastic support from the rest of the students. Field to Fork Vaucluse and Woolworths Double Bay were sponsors for the sausages and rolls, respectively. The students managed to raise over $1000! Well done!

Their donation meant that all funds raised go directly to the projects these students support. We thank Mrs. Pelosi and Ms. Knight for the enthusiasm and motivation of the students joining them on this trip and congratulate Tali Ereira for arranging the sizzle.

Year 11 Ancient History students visited the Chau Chak Wing Museum at the University of Sydney as part of their study of Ancient Egypt. Firstly, students were provided with a tour of the Egyptian wing of the museum, looking at an incredible copy of the Book of the Dead and an array of canopic jars, and shabti dolls.

They also saw the coffins and mummies of Meruah, Padiashaikhet and Mer-Neith-it-es, with interactive graphics supplied by CT scans providing a fascinating interactive experience. Students then played the role of archaeologist, handling precious artefacts and objects, some as much as 9000 years old. It was a remarkable experience to be able to touch objects that they had only ever seen in textbooks.

Great news from our Debating teams as they started the Eastside Competition last Friday night. It was a phenomenal effort to win all but the Year 11 debate against Rose Bay Secondary. Good luck against the tough Sydney Girls teams this evening.

There is so much to report on the sporting side of the school.

Surfer Poppy O'Reilly fought hard and won The Sanbah Cadet Cup in Newcastle for the second consecutive time last weekend. This weekend, she competes in the Australian board riders' battle at Burleigh Heads. We wish Poppy well.

Fletcher Tudor and Archie Jolley have been racing at the NSW Inter Schools Mountain Biking at Thredbo last weekend and were joined by our Year 9, 10, 11, and 12 Boys this Thursday and Friday. I love their uniform. More information will come as I get their results.

Congratulations to Year 12 students Thomas Malki and Nicholas Alexiou, who recently represented our school in the CDSSA team and secured an impressive second-place finish. Thomas and Nicholas demonstrated outstanding dedication, skill, and teamwork throughout the competition, making us immensely proud of their efforts on the court. While both students showcased exceptional talent, we are thrilled to announce that Nicholas Alexiou has been selected for the AICES team. Nicholas's selection for the AICES team is a testament to his hard work, perseverance, and talent, and we do not doubt that he will continue to excel at the next level. Congratulations to Thomas and Nicholas for their remarkable achievements, and we wish Nicholas the best as he embarks on this exciting new chapter in his basketball career.

Last Thursday, our representative Touch Football Teams competed in the CDSSA Championships. It was a great day with all our students giving their best in sweltering conditions. All four teams made the Grand Finals of their Division, but unfortunately, we came home empty-handed, being Runners in each Division.

Congratulations to the following students for their selection in the CDSSA Teams that will play at the AICES Championships at Penrith on March 26th.

Open Boys - Harrison Walker, Eden Zahra, Jordon Shalome, Lee Maserow, Boston Berry, Tom Trew (Reserve)

Open Girls - Ella Fitzpatrick, Savanah Charles, Sienna Diamond, Isabella Leibman and Annika Landa (Reserves)

15s Boys - Parker Jordan-Booth, Max Hack, Oliver Charles, Will Seddon, Oscar Bakes.

15s Girls - Amber Charles, Cairo Blackmore, Lauren Lim, Eva Balafas (Reserve)

Our tennis teams continue to impress, and congratulations to Axel Briner and Gem Roffe-Nassi, who had an impressive win last Saturday.

The NSW Surf Lifesaving and Athletics State Championship will be held this weekend, with many of our students involved. Good luck to all of them, and I look forward to hearing how you are doing.

In Music, our Year 8 students have been learning to play ukuleles in their classroom music lessons as part of their unit 'Music and Society.' Students have been rehearsing duets, and this week, the Early Learning students were a keen audience for some of them as they practised together in the sunshine. Students also appreciated the extra set of classroom instruments installed in 4.6, which were ready for extra rehearsing leading up to their assessment in Week 8.

Year 12 Music students visited the Opera House on Monday evening to see the annual Encore concert featuring some of the best 2023 HSC music items from across the state. The variety of items and musicinspired students showcased was a timely reminder of the importance of choosing a repertoire that allows for a technical display and expressiveness in performing. HSC students have been rehearsing for their practical exams this term and have already been identifying ways to put their personal 'stamp' on their performance.

The Year 9 and Year 10 Music students attend the WOMAdelaide Music Festival this weekend. They will have a fantastic experience there, seeing music from a different perspective. More to follow on their return.

I love it when students share their photos of school activities with me, and this week, I include Mateo Lopez Fisher’s photo of his friends working on their passive wooden speakers in Design and Technology. Thank you, Mateo.

Have a wonderful weekend and week ahead.
