Reddam House High School Newsletter Volume 24, Issue 9 | 28th March 2024
Dear Parents and Caregivers,
The week of the High School Musical is always a highlight on my calendar for Term 1.
The Music Man performances on Wednesday night, Thursday morning, and evening were good. The 150 students in the cast, crew, wardrobe, hair and makeup team, and photographer all had the most fun imaginable. The energy and joy were palpable to the audience drawn into the performance. The costumes, sets, acting, singing, and dancing were of a standard that made one forget that these students performed in a school production: it was magical. Thank you to Mr. Hattingh, Mr. and Mrs Bortolotti, and Ms Knight for inspiring the students to rise to these great heights. To all our magnificent students involved in whichever aspect of this production, thank you all, and well done. This is another show of which the Reddam Community can rightly be proud.
The Year 12 students, in the meanwhile, have their second assessment week, and Mrs. Lansley reports that the biology students completed their Depth Study as a practical assessment task. It was based on the works of two famous scientists Koch and Pasteur. The students were asked to apply their knowledge of pathogens and investigate how to handle food safely. They planned, conducted, and analysed their results independently. All students were required to work safely and using aseptic techniques. It was amazing to watch all the students so engaged and focused.
Many thanks to Tyler Gruenpeter for these fantastic photos.
Year 11 Leadership Camp was an opportunity for students interested in being part of the coming year’s leadership team to get together and start planning what that might look like. The Amazing Race through Centennial Park on Sunday was, as always, fun and exciting. Designed by Mr Francis
meant that it would be wacky, off the wall, but memorable and exhausting. The activities and workshops arranged by their Year Coordinator, Mr. Dalglish, for Monday, allowed them to understand the leadership structures at Reddam and design and adapt them to suit the strengths of this particular cohort. I thoroughly enjoyed spending time with them and seeing the enthusiasm combined with new ideas that this group of students hopes to implement. If even a few of their ideas come to fruition, the school will continue going from strength to strength.
On the Sports fields this last week:
The scene was set two weeks ago when Kincopal beat the Reddam Senior Girls Touch Football in the last regular match of the season. From that day on, our girls, along with their coaches Bella Slattery and Jasmine Fountas, worked hard with extra training sessions and a focus on how to win the Grand Final.
On arrival at the ground on Saturday, it was apparent that the Reddam girls meant business. Their families and friends were there to support them, so they gave everything they had.
It was 2 - 1 at halftime to us, but Kincopal struck back late in the game and led 3 - 2. With only seconds left on the clock, Coach Jasmine called a great play, and the girls pulled off a try on the bell to send the game into overtime and a drop-off. In overtime, Reddam scored a match-winning try in the corner to take out the Grand Final. What a match! Every member of this year's Senior Team was outstanding, with Ella Fitzpatrick being awarded player of the Grand Final at the presentation.

This past Sunday marked a significant achievement for the Reddam House Debating Academy at the Oxford International Competition for Young Debaters (ICYD), where our students showcased exceptional skill, strategy, and eloquence. Competing in a challenging international arena, five of our teams demonstrated their debating prowess, preparation depth, and ability to adapt to the British Parliamentary debating style a departure from the traditional 3v3 format familiar in Australia. This new style features 4 TEAMS per debate and Points of Information. The ICYD is renowned for its rigorous competition, attracting some of the best young debaters worldwide. Participating in this not only provided our students with an invaluable platform to hone their skills, but also gave them a unique opportunity to engage with diverse perspectives and methodologies in debating.
In a testament to their outstanding performance, one of our teams, featuring William Barouch and Lila Macpherson, achieved the remarkable feat of advancing to the grand final. This achievement highlights their exceptional skill and teamwork and secures them an invitation to the finals held in the prestigious setting of Oxford University. This opportunity promises further challenges and the chance to become world champion debaters in their age group.
Adding to our accolades, William Barouch was recognised as the 2nd best speaker of the competition, an incredible honour that speaks volumes about his dedication, intelligence, and rhetorical skills. This individual recognition amidst a massive field of talented international debaters is a proud moment for William and Reddam School alike, underscoring the high level of debate education and mentorship our students receive.
Remarkably, all five Reddam teams finished the competition with at least one victory across the four rounds clearly indicating the strength and consistency of our debating program. Competing in BP style, which emphasises dynamic engagement and a broad understanding of global issues, our teams rose to the occasion, adapting their strategies and delivery to excel in this format.
We extend our heartfelt congratulations to all our debaters for their impressive achievements and thank our coaches, parents, and the broader Reddam community for their unwavering support. The experience and insights gained from this competition are invaluable, laying a solid foundation for future success both on the national and international stages.
Last Friday night, our debate teams demonstrated remarkable acumen and strategic finesse in a series of debates centered around the compelling world of Economics, facing off against SCEGGS. In an impressive showcase of knowledge, analytical skills, and persuasive argumentation, our students
secured victories in four out of six debates across the senior year groups (9, 10, 11, and 12), marking a significant triumph in our debating calendar.
Special thanks go to the coaches, parents, and supporters who continue to nurture and encourage our debaters' talents and interests.
Again, congratulations to our debaters for their inspiring achievements in round 4. Here's to many more victories and valuable learning experiences in the future.
I am very excited to share that Mia Cohen has been chosen as one of 12 finalists for the Royal Academy of Dance Isobel Anderson Awards (Intermediate level), whose semi-finals were last Friday, 22nd March. Over 120 candidates were entered at this level, so we are very proud of Mia making it through to the finals.
Mia must present the Isobel Anderson port de bras and two solos in the finals on Sunday, 7th April, at the Seymour Centre.
April will be a super busy and exciting month for Mia with her ballet commitments. In addition to the finals mentioned above, she is going to Melbourne next Monday for a week to participate in the Australian Ballet School Intensive Training Program. Upon return and after the Isobel Anderson Awards, Mia will travel to New York for the Youth America Grand Prix finals with her Classical Ballet Group representing The Teresa Johnson Ballet School.
Jazz Spira achieved her dream of competing at Sydney Royal this year. It was a thrill and honour for her to have been accepted.
She had a fantastic experience at the show. It was a huge and terrifying atmosphere for her young horse, so she had her work cut out to get him to keep his mind on jumping when there were so many distractions in the arena alongside the Showjumping. I am so proud of her effort, strategically using the 30 seconds before the time started and then having to work every stride to get him around. After four days of jumping, they ended up mid-field amongst the best junior riders in the country (who were all riding much more experienced horses!) in the Junior Grand Prix, jumping the biggest track that either Jazz or her horse had ever seen at 1.35m. All while studying for her exams that she wrote around the event. Congratulations, what a fantastic feat, Jazz.

Next week is another four-day week, with school closing for the April holiday on Friday, 5th April, at 1:00 pm. Reports will be posted to the Parent Portal by the 9th of April.
We wish all our Christian families a Happy Easter.
We will all have a wonderful long weekend and week ahead.

2025 admissions
Applications for 2025 entry open on 3 April for domestic students and 17 April for international students. UAC will email UAC PINs to all NSW HSC and ACT BSSS students on 3 April. Students will need their NESA or BSSS student number and their UAC PIN to apply through UAC.
Interstate and IB students should wait until 1 August to apply as UAC won't receive their student data until later in the year. I'll let you know if this changes.
Access schemes
When applications for admission open, so will applications for the Schools Recommendation Scheme (SRS) and the Educational Access Scheme (EAS). This year there are a few changes.
SRS application changes
The SRS application is now part of the undergraduate application, similar to EAS. Once a student submits their undergraduate application, they can follow a link to SRS: there will no longer be a standalone application accessible from the UAC website.
Students will be asked to confirm that their school name is correct. If a student needs to upload their Year 11 results, they will be prompted to do so.
EAS process change for schools
This year we will not accept emailed educational impact statements (EIS). However, if you cannot give the EIS to the student to upload to their EAS application, you will be able to upload it through the School Access portal (where you now complete SRS ratings). More details will come soon.
In 2023, an increased number of applicants provided EIS from people not considered ‘responsible persons’ (eg parents, other relatives, gardeners, cleaners). This year we will add the definition of a responsible person to each document package.
EIS must be completed by the school principal, counsellor, year adviser, teacher or careers adviser. If this is not possible it must be completed by a responsible person, such as a doctor, lawyer, social worker, counsellor, or community or religious leader who has knowledge of the circumstances and the effect on the student's studies.
Finally, a reminder that EAS is only used for ATAR-based offers unless otherwise specified.
UAC publications
Another reminder: as advised in my April 2023 email, UAC is no longer producing the UAC Guide. All information about the next admissions cycle will be updated on the UAC website from April.
If students would like a printed information booklet, they can pick up a copy of Steps to Uni for Year 11 and 12 Students from one of the many expos we'll be attending this year. If you are from an interstate school, we'll be bringing Applying to NSW and ACT Universities with us to the VCE and Careers Expo in Melbourne, TSXPO in Brisbane and the TIS roadshow in Tasmania.
Steps to Uni for Year 11 and 12 Students will not be sent out to schools but it can be downloaded from the UAC website if needed.
Steps to Uni for Year 10 Students will still be printed and one copy for each Year 10 student will be sent to all NSW schools in early Term 2, as usual.

• A firm offer means a student must complete year 12 without the ATAR requirement. This will be the vast majority of the offers students receive.
• A conditional offer means you must meet the minimum ATAR requirements before receiving a confirmed place in the selected course. Offers will have the conditions clearly outline in the offer email.
• Application requirements remain unchanged, the program will consider the students year 11 results and answers to three x 150-word questions, with examples included in their responses demonstrating their soft skills.
