Dear Parents and Caregivers,
It is impressive to see that by the end of the second week of a school year, routines are well and truly up and running, and students and teachers have settled back into the rhythm of being back at school after the very long summer break. That is the case on both campuses. At Bondi, we all look forward to the completion of the refurbishment of the Bondi Learning Centre, and we are almost used to the distractions from builders. At Woollahra, even the new Year 7 students have an air of confidence about themselves, having successfully navigated their first two weeks of High School. All activities, ensembles, sports, and tutorials are up and running, giving students the full range of academic, sports, and cultural opportunities to integrate themselves into the school's life.
Final auditions were held this week for the High School
Musical, Footloose. Mr. Hattingh is excited about the upcoming term’s rehearsals in preparation for the performances at NIDA on the 29th and 30th of March. The cast was revealed at their first full rehearsal on Wednesday, and while the 28 students getting solo parts are excited, one always feels for the rest of the students who auditioned unsuccessfully for these parts. They will be part of the various ensembles, but their disappointment is understandable. Mrs Bortolotti will post rehearsal schedules in this newsletter every week.
Izzy Lowe of Year 11, the editor of The Stag, has distributed the first edition of the student newspaper for 2023 to all students, and I have included a link for those interested in reading it.

Despite the mishap of the buses not being on time to return students to Woollahra following the Year 9 Camp from Camp Toukley, the Year Coordinators who organised each camp could not have been happier with the outcome. New students were integrated into each year group, and the Year 7 students returned as a cohesive cohort. Old friendships were rekindled, new ones formed, tutor teachers and Year Coordinators got to know the students in their care, and a lot of fun was had with not that much sleep, all added to the mix of what made the camps so successful.
The first Parent Info and Cocktail evenings for Year 10 and Year 11 parents were held at Bondi on Wednesday. One area parents have missed tremendously over the last three years is the social aspect of meeting and sharing with the parents of their children’s friends on these evenings. We have never had such an overwhelmingly positive response, and teachers and parents enjoyed the evening.
The remaining Parent Cocktail evenings will be hosted at Woollahra as follows:
Year 8: Thursday, 16th February at 7:00 pm
Year 7: Tuesday, 21st February at 7:00 pm
Year 9: Thursday, 23rd February at 7:00 pm

THIS ISSUE:
This week Mr Hodgson and Mr Montgomery accompanied Drama students from Years 11 and 12 to OnStage at the Seymour Centre in Chippendale. It was a fantastic opportunity to watch last year's exemplary HSC Individual and Group Performances selected from schools across New South Wales. There was much talk and discussion at the end of the evening as students felt inspired and excited to see such impressive work. This experience will stand our students in good stead as they create their HSC performances this year and next.
Student's achievements this week include:
Ruby Levitt was invited to present via a live feed at a Unity Earth conference in the USA. She was the only school student speaking. Having won an international art competition (out of the USA) relating to peace and harmony, called Peace Pals, she was also placed third in a subsequent Peace Pals competition for another artwork entered. The Peace Pals organisation and the Unity Earth organisation are connected, and they contacted Ruby to ask if she could speak at their next symposium. What an incredible honour, Ruby; congratulations.
Sophia Glasson of Year 10 was crowned National Junior Champion in Woman’s Foil last Friday in Melbourne. Together with her teammates, they also won the Team Gold Medal.
Sophia and the Australian Fencing Team also achieved a historic Bronze Women’s Foil Team medal at the FIE Junior World Cup in Bangkok in Dec 2022. Sophia, what a tremendous achievement. Congratulations.
Have a wonderful weekend and week ahead,
Dave Pitcairn
The HSC Art students leave for Hobart today to attend the annual Year 12 Art Retreat. They will spend time at MONA doing an intensive block of work. They will also imbibe the historical sites of Hobart and enjoy some time at the Salamanca markets. I look forward to their report, as this is always a highlight in the Art calendar for students.
Xavier Hanna of Year 9 has been instrumental in initiating a Reddam Short Film Competition. The information sheet giving further information is included over the page in this newsletter.

BOYS 1ST V BASKETBALL
The 1st V Basketball team was ready to make a name for themselves as they took part in the Newington Classic during the school holidays. Competing against some of the best teams in the region, the boys were determined to do their school proud.
The first day was a huge success, with the team winning all three of their games. Not only did they show skill and determination on the court, but they also demonstrated great sportsmanship. Day two saw the team reach the quarterfinals and they managed to win that game too. This meant they were through to the semi-finals and their opponents were Newington, the team everyone wanted to beat. The game was intense and the boys were neck and neck with Newington until the last quarter when Newington pulled away with the game and the boys were unfortunately knocked out. Everyone was disappointed but they were still proud of the team’s performance and the amazing results they had achieved.
Now that the tournament is over, the team is focusing on their next challenge: the CDSSA Gala day tournament which is taking place on Friday next week. The boys are determined to make the school proud again and show everyone what they are made of. The basketball community and school is behind the team and everyone is eagerly anticipating the results of the tournament. Who knows, maybe the boys will come out on top and bring home another amazing result for the school.
