Reddam House High School Newsletter Volume 23, Issue 29 | 13 October 2023
Dear Parents and Caregivers, Welcome back to Term 4. I trust everyone had a relaxing and enjoyable holiday. What an awful way to start the term with the news of the atrocities committed by the terrorist organisation Hamas on Israel. The Reddam Psychology team would like to offer suggestions on responding to and emotionally supporting your teenage children during this distressing time. When teenagers experience stress, they will likely turn to trusted adults for comfort and reassurance, so our response plays an essential role in determining how our children will respond. As adults, we may be experiencing disbelief, pain, distress, and grief; understandably, we may have difficulty processing our emotions. These are normal responses during challenging times. It is crucial, however, that we manage our emotions as best we can and try not to project our anxiety and distress onto our children. (Please find the five steps for Helping Teens Process Disturbing Events later in this newsletter.) Holiday activities to report back on include: Ten Reddam students from Years 9 and 10 embarked on an epic journey to Cambodia over the September school holidays to learn about the country's history and culture and complete a community service project. The students traveled to Siem Reap, visited the ancient temples of Angkor Wat, trekked
through the jungles of Kulen Mountain, and began their community service project at the Elephant Valley Project in Mondulkiri. The students worked tirelessly to create a training centre to aid medical procedures for injured elephants rescued from logging and tourism industries around South East Asia. They cut down trees to build fenced-off areas and bridges to assist the vets who work with the elephants to rewild the animals. They then traveled to Phnom Penh, where students volunteered at the Free the Bears Organisation, creating meals and interactive toys for Sun and Moon bears exploited in the tourism industry. In total, nearly $7500 of funds raised by Reddam House were donated to these projects, which aided the animals and the local community members who were on meager wages to support the rehabilitation efforts for these animals. The students were also made aware of the atrocities of the Khmer Rouge genocide and were able to chat with survivors to hear their harrowing tales of survival. The students represented Reddam House in the best possible way with dedication, hard work, courtesy, and respect for all those around them, fully invested in every task set.

The September school holidays brought an extraordinary adventure as our students embarked on the Italy Art Tour. Throughout this immersive journey, they explored the cultural treasures of Italy, delving into its rich history and artistry. Our art enthusiasts traversed the most iconic Italian cities, including Rome, Vatican City, Pompei, Sorrento, Capri, Florence, Venice, and Milan. Each stop offered a unique perspective on art and history, inspiring and amazing our students.
Artistry in Action: Every day, our students engaged in artmaking workshops, honing their skills in drawing, watercolor, design, architecture, and photography. They also had the opportunity to visit both traditional and contemporary galleries, gaining insights into Italy's vibrant art scene. Our students delved deep into the past in Florence, the heart of the Renaissance. They spent three days at the Academia D'Arte Firenze, mastering the egg tempera technique, a traditional method of Renaissance masters. The highlight was creating their version of Botticelli's 'Birth of Venus,' a true masterpiece. Walking tours took our students through world history and art history pages. They soaked in the captivating narratives surrounding them, enriching their understanding of the profound interplay between art and the world it reflects.
Our young artists returned home brimming with inspiration for their artmaking. The Italy Art Tour has broadened their artistic horizons and provided a wealth of knowledge to fuel their creative endeavors. All artists have come home with an art journal full of artworks and ideas for further creation. The Italy Art Tour was a once-in-a-lifetime journey, and we can't wait to see how this experience continues to shape our budding artists. Until next time, keep creating, exploring, and embracing the art world.

We congratulate the following students on their achievements this holiday:
Bianca Szwarc and her dance group participated in the Gold Coast Dance Competition, receiving two first places for their hip-hop and musical theatre performances.
Mia Cohen participated in the YAGP (Youth America Grand Prix). This prestigious international ballet competition runs for three days and includes ballet classes, which the adjudicators observe as part of the selection process. In the 12-14-year-old Classical Solo Category, she got to the second round, a selection of just 18 dancers from the 125 competitors. In the Classical Group Category, as part of a team of 5 dancers, including Year 9 Reddam Student Alex Thatcher, they made it to the finals scheduled next year in New York City. Following that, Mia went to Melbourne for a week, where she joined the ITP Australian Ballet Program for the second time—an unbelievable achievement.
Charlie Rule of the HSC Class of 2020 has been named in the Matildas squad for the upcoming Olympic qualifier in Perth. Well done, Charlie.
At the end of Term 3, we congratulated a number of students who received Distinctions and High Distinctions in the ICAS Mathematics Competition. In particular, we celebrate Abby Sheary, David Nelenson and Sophia Garvin, from Year 7, 8 and 9. These students were awarded a High Distinction Certificate, meaning they received a score higher than 99% of other Australian students. Well done to all students involved.
In the Pastoral Care Sessions today, Year 7 students participated in Sexualisation workshops delivered by Elephant Education. Year 8 had a leadership workshop in preparation for them leading the Middle School next year. Year 9 students participated in the workshop “Let’s Talk About Appearances and Expectations” by the Butterfly Foundation.
Have a good weekend and week ahead, Dave Pitcairn
Drama News
MIDDLE SCHOOL DRAMA PRODUCTION - 'SCAREDY-CAT' written by BRENDAN HOGAN It’s Australia and a local Little Trooper Platoon (a parody of Boy Scouts) has gathered for the 15th Annual Bushwackeree, a weekend of camping and working towards earning patches. Things are going along swimmingly for this bunch of eager and adventurous Little Troopers until Dani, the newest recruit, has their secret plans revealed. How will the other troopers react? What are those ferocious noises coming from the bush? And what will Dani unmask about the Little Trooper Platoon? Whichever the case, if you go down to the woods today, you’re sure of a big surprise. Year 9 Are Animals Written by Richard Tulloch Alan Howman is a new teacher at a Sydney high school. He is given a notoriously difficult Year 9 class for English and sets out to do his best. In his attempt to interest the students, Alan devises some out-of-theordinary activities. It seems there are lessons to be learned not only for the students but for Alan as well.
We are incredibly excited about these productions and encourage parents/caregivers, families, and friends to support our students and attend one of our evening performances. Tickets can be purchased here.

Five Steps for Helping Teens Process Disturbing Events: Israel Conflict
1. Provide opportunities for expression of feelings. Let teens know that whatever they’re feeling is okay - listen, acknowledge, and validate their concerns/fears and feelings. It’s understandable to have a lot of emotions during times of upheaval. It’s okay for parents to be honest and acknowledge that they, too, may be feeling overwhelmed and emotional. However, parents should never turn to their teens for help dealing with their distress. As a parent, the best way to help your teen feel safe is to assure them that no matter what you’re both going through, you will be there for them and ensure they have any additional support they need. If you have responsive, open, nonjudgmental conversations about distressing news with your teenager, you'll send the message that your teen can always talk with you. They will trust you to listen when something is worrying them. 2. Take the opportunity to discuss values.
Times of great upheaval and stress are confusing and painful. But they can also help us become more transparent about what matters most. That’s true for teens as well. Parents can take this opportunity to engage teens in a conversation about the qualities and ways of being they believe are most admirable and worthwhile. Rather than sharing your values or telling them what you think is right, ask them questions, encouraging them to voice what they feel strongly about and want to uphold. 3. Limit teens’ time online. Your teenagers would likely have seen or been exposed to much disturbing media content and may be struggling to process and make sense of it. It’s difficult to expect teens to unplug entirely from their devices, mainly when so much of their academic and social lives are online. However, parents can negotiate and help teens create helpful limits around their exposure to media, particularly media that is likely to increase their levels of anxiety and distress. Encourage teens to consider how their mood and state of mind are affected by the media they consume. How do they feel after time online vs. time outside, for example? Creating a loving and honest space to explore and discuss their thoughts and feelings and process what they have been exposed to is essential. Spending less time on devices and more time engaged in real-life relationships and activities will go a long way to support teen mental health during and after disturbing events and throughout the teenage years. 4. Support them to restore a sense of inner calm. Constant confronting media exposure and the distress created by current events can activate the sympathetic nervous system. As a result, teens may experience physical and emotional stress. They may need encouragement and help to engage in activities that help to shift their nervous system into the parasympathetic (“rest and digest”) mode. Research shows that mindfulness exercises are one of the most effective approaches for activating this mode. Slow, mindful movement and breathing calm the nervous system. Therefore, teens don’t have to “think” their way out of stress; their neurobiological system does some of the work for them. 5. Help teens channel their emotions into meaningful action. Teens feel things passionately, and parents can support them in translating that passion into appropriate action, self-expression, and connection. They could volunteer or help raise funds for a cause they care about, write songs, journal, or make visual art about their feelings. When teens take meaningful action after a disturbing event, they have a better chance of experiencing post-traumatic growth. Hence, they can move forward feeling more resilient and empowered, with a stronger sense of self and a determination to help create positive change. New single application for scholarships Students can now complete one form to be considered for most scholarships at the University of Sydney*. High School students will need their most recent school report or HSC trial results, to answer self-reflective questions about their motivation to study and let us know what areas of study they’re considering. To be eligible for scholarships via this form, students must have a University of Sydney course in their UAC preferences by 29 September. They only need to complete the form once (unless their circumstances change) and upon successful completion will be considered for equity and/or meritbased scholarships depending on their circumstances. Note, scholarships that have previously been awarded automatically (e.g. MySydney) will continue to be awarded automatically depending on a student’s eligibility. However, we still recommend students apply
for scholarships using this form so they can be considered for as many as, and to the highest value, possible. * Some University of Sydney scholarships will still require individual application per scholarship. See sydney.edu.au/scholarships for a list of all scholarships, including terms and conditions. Admission pathways and entry schemes Our entry schemes help students make the most of their qualifications by recognising their circumstances, special achievements and other abilities and activities. Most of our entry schemes are currently open, with fast-approaching application deadlines. To learn more and apply, students can visit the admission pathways webpage or email Sydney Future Students at admission.pathways@sydney.edu.au with questions. New admission scheme: Regional and Remote Entry Scheme The Regional and Remote Scheme – for domestic students residing in or attending a school in a regional or remote area – offers admission to a Sydney Uni undergraduate degree on a reduced ATAR. Students are also encouraged to submit an application to be considered for scholarships through the University's new single scholarship application form. Applications close 29 September and students must also have the University of Sydney listed as a preference on this date. Please note: most accommodation scholarships still require a separate application through the relevant college website. MySydney Entry and Scholarship Scheme MySydney offers eligible students residing in a low socio-economic areas entry on a reduced ATAR, an $8,500 per annum scholarship for the duration of their undergraduate degree, and additional support. Students simply submit a UAC application and list the University of Sydney as a preference. If the student is eligible, we will notify them via email on the dates listed on the MySydney website.

Domestic undergraduate scholarships single application form We're dedicated to supporting your students throughout their time at university. We offer a wide variety of scholarships for domestic undergraduate students. To make the process easier, we've created a centralised form where students can be considered from a pool of $1.5 million worth of scholarships
through one simple application. To be eligible for scholarships via this form, current Year 12 students must complete the form and have a University of Sydney course in their UAC preferences by 29 September. Visit the domestic undergraduate scholarships webpage to learn more about the eligibility criteria and application process, to view a list of the scholarships covered in this form, and to submit an application. UAC
Applications Applications are still steadily rolling in. Please remind students that to be considered for many highdemand courses, and to avoid a higher fee, they should lodge a UAC application before 29 September. If they wish to be considered for an SRS offer, both applications must be lodged by 18 September. Many people ask about the benefits of applying through UAC compared to applying directly to an institution for an early offer, so here are a few key points: •
Not all courses are available for early offers.
•
An early offer is not guaranteed.
•
A UAC application provides more options for preferences.
•
Students who have experienced difficulties/disadvantages in Year 11 or 12 can have their circumstances taken into account through an EAS application.
Students should make the most of their options and list different course preferences in their UAC application and their direct application. However, if they miss out on an early offer from a direct application they can add that course preference to their UAC application and compete for an offer based on their ATAR. The majority of students will be made an offer based on their ATAR and the hard work they have put into their Year 12 studies. Preferences While attending uni open days this year, the UAC Community Engagement team has answered many questions from students about how to list their preferences. In some cases a university has told them they need to list a course as their number one preference in order to receive an offer, but the course is not their first choice. Students should always: •
place their dream course as their first preference
•
include a back-up course as a lower preference.
And they should find out: •
the previous lowest selection ranks for the course – is it a realistic choice?
•
if they are eligible for any adjustment factors.
