House High School Newsletter Volume 23, Issue 6 - 10 March 2023
Reddam
Dear Parents and Caregivers,
Our esteemed Mathematics Teacher, Ori Golan, penned an “ode to women everywhere” in honour of International Women’s Day on Wednesday. I share it with his permission.
An ode to women everywhere
In South Japan or Delaware
In Gambia, Ireland, or Xanadu
Whose motto is “I can – and do” .
Who live alone or head a clan
Who share their life with woman/ man
Whose hair is short, or molten grey
Who work at night, or toil by day
To all the women of our nation,
Who’ve faced entrenched discrimination
We honour you for your immense Resilience, grit and common sense
Your patience, care and constant giving
For you who cook and make a living
Who hug and chide, or wipe a tear,
Who juggle parenting and a career.
Who run a business and a home
And do it all with such aplomb.
To all the women of our planet,
Whose name is Wendy, Jill or Janet
Who live in huts, or flats or houses
Who fret about their kids and spouses
Who rail, campaign and sue for peace.
And each is someone’s friend, or niece
To all the women, across the globe
Who dress in shorts, or velvet robe
This is your day of celebration.
You are the pride of god’s creation.
Happy International Women’s Day.
Last weekend was a really busy one with many tours and camps happening:
The Year 11 Leadership Camp was enjoyed not only by the students but also by the teachers who accompanied them. Ms. Vince, their Year Coordinator, had this to say about them as a cohort in a letter sent home to parents,
“I have never written a letter like this after a school camp at Reddam in my 17 years at the school. However, I feel you need to know how magnificent the Year 11 students were on camp. I am speaking for all the teachers present at the camp.
The weather conditions were very trying but Year 11 rose to the occasion. From their good spirits, with their drive and determination on the Amazing Race to their cooperative and enthusiastic behaviour at
Stanwell Tops, their politeness and respect were exceptional and they were an absolute credit to you (and Reddam).
And if even a fraction of their ideas come to fruition when they become the student leaders on the Bondi campus, it will leave a significant and powerful legacy.”
The Middle School Drama Camp which saw our Years 8-9 Drama students attend The Collaroy Centre for a weekend of engaging practical workshops led by industry professionals aimed at inspiring our students and their creative pursuits. ( see Mr. Montgomery’s full report later in this newsletter)
The Year 12 Geographers' visit to the Great Barrier Reef and Daintree Forrest to study ecosystems at risk was a great success, with students getting first-hand experience with all relevant content from the HSC curriculum a fantastic example of bringing the classroom to life. Mr Garratt was exuberant in his praise of the students and the experience.
The Eastside Debating Competition has started, and our first round against Cranbrook saw the Year 8 and Year 9 teams winning their arguments, suggesting that adult children, where they are financially capable, should have a legal obligation to look after their elderly parents.
The Year 12 team argued that art generated by artificial intelligence (e.g. images, paintings, poetry, text), which is specifically based on an artist's work, should be legally considered the intellectual property of that artist. Well done to all debaters.
Next week the Senior Executive will be raising funds to go towards the World's Greatest Shave, and they would love your help in reaching their goal of $10,000. Help by donating, shaving your head, or spreading the word by sharing this link with family and friends who might contribute. Reddam House WGSDonation Page
Good luck Zoe Topper and your team.
Student achievements this week include:
• Yesterday six Reddam students participated in various heats in the Rostrum Voice of Youth Public Speaking competition. Evie Zavos, Jessica Levy and Zoe Martin competed in the Senior section, while Amber Sher, Jethro Jensen and Sarah Mueller competed in the Junior section. Congratulations to Sarah Mueller, the runner-up in her section, and Jethro Jensen and Amber Sher, who won their respective heats and moved through to the Regional Finals. This was an excellent result for Reddam.
• Two of our Senior boys travelled to Homebush this week to participate in the NSWCIS Open Boys Water Polo trials. It is with great pleasure that we can report both Dasher Stewart and Xavier Nicholas have been selected for the team. Both of these boys have come through the Reddam water polo program and have worked extremely hard to achieve what they have at this stage of their journey with water polo. Congratulations.
• Reddam entered 4 teams in the CDSSA Touch Football Championships this week which was held at Centennial Park. Our teams played exceptionally well with our Open Boys finishing up in Third place, Open Girls in Third place, our 15s Girls as Runners Up and our 15s Boys as Champions.
Congratulations to the following students on their selection in the CDSSA Teams playing at the AICES Championships next week.
- 15s Boys - Oscar Bakes, Jean Luc Rose, Sony Cyron, and Jayden Finucane.
- 15s Girls - Nicola Shapiro, Jesse Gatt, Piper Hovey, and Savanah Charles
- Open Boys - Luca De Cian, Harrison Walker, Eden Zahra, Marko Sussa and Boston Berry
- Open Girls - Kayla Boyarsky, Annika Landa and Ella Fitzpatrick.
• Tomi Reynaldo competed over the weekend at the NSW Little Athletics Combined Carnival in Dubbo, a heptathlon-style event, with the athletes competing in 7 events over the 2 days. Tomi placed third overall in the NSW for his age group, earning him selection into the NSW team that will compete in April at the Australian Combined Events Championships in Melbourne. Congratulations Tomi.
• Natalie Townsend (Y12) won 1st place at the Randwick Council Art Prize for the Youth Division. She did a digital painting of Julianna Bozzetto, her beloved piano teacher with her 3 cats. We are very proud of her, and what a lovely reflection on the Music Department that tutors are that inspiring. Well done Natalie.
Next week the Year 7, Year 8, and Year 9 students have a seminar day on Tuesday to explore educational opportunities outside of the classroom.
The NAPLAN assessments for Year 7 and Year 9 will start next week on Thursday and continue the following week.
Have a great weekend and week ahead,
Dave Pitcairn

SCHOLARSHIPS AT THE UNIVERSITY OF SYDNEY
MySydney Entry & Scholarship Scheme
| Wednesday 15 March 5.00-6.30pm
The E12 Early Offer and Scholarship Scheme is being discontinued as the University has introduced MySydney. Similarly to E12, MySydney provides entry at a reduced ATAR, yet a more generous scholarship of $8500 per year to students residing in a low socioeconomic area*. MySydney does not require a written application and eligible students will be identified automatically via UAC.
*Residing at the time of UAC application in an area listed in the bottom 25% of the Australian Bureau of Statistics Socio-Economic Index for Areas (SEIFA), Index of Education and Occupation.
Scholarships
The decision was made to discontinue the Sydney Scholars Award. With such a large volume of applications each year, far outweighing the number of Awards available to students, it was decided it was not fair for students to be spending so much time on their applications as such a crucial time of year.
In preparation for the change, the Chancellor’s Award was recently expanded to include students who received a 99.90 ATAR (previously awarded to 99.95 only). This cohort accounted for a large number of the Sydney Scholars Awards historically given to students. Preliminary 2023 offer and enrolment numbers also show that more students who achieved an ATAR of 95.00+ received the University’s new MySydney Scholarship, than those who received the Sydney Scholars Award.
There continues to be many academic merit scholarships available at a faculty level which we encourage students to apply for. The scholarships search tool will help students discover the range of scholarships that they may be eligible for.

Students from other states will use their date of birth as their PIN but will be unable to apply until later in the year when we have received student data from our interstate partners.
Applications for our Access schemes will also open on the 5 April.
This year's UAC Guide is set to be delivered to schools early in Term 2, followed by Steps to Uni for Year 10 Students and the Scaling Report for the 2022 HSC.
Schools Recommendation Scheme
There are no changes to the SRS process this year. However, the University of Sydney E12 and UNSW Gateway schemes will not be part of SRS in 2023. I am sure you will receive information about these schemes very soon, if you haven't already.
Educational Access Scheme
There are several changes to EAS this year:
The six-month rule has been removed. Applications will be assessed for disadvantages that have occurred for any length of time up until 30 September of the year they complete Year 12.
Disadvantage codes F01K and F01S, which allowed students to claim financial disadvantage based on COVID-19 government payments, have been removed.
There is a new SEIFA disadvantage code, AG02, which works in the same way as AG01 but draws on the Australian Bureau of Statistics Index of Education and Occupation instead of the Index of Relative Socioeconomic Advantage and Disadvantage. The day after they submit their application, students identified as meeting the criteria for either of these disadvantages will be notified that UAC has automatically created an EAS application for them.
The student's document cover sheet will include a checklist to help them understand what they need to provide.
The Educational Impact Statement will require schools to answer fewer questions, making it a quicker and easier process for you.
UAC - will also host another online Year 12 Conference. Last year, 3,500 students and parents logged in to watch, making it the biggest UAC Digital event to date. When: 28 April @ 6pm. Registrations will open soon and details will be announced when available.
