Reddam House High School Newsletter Volume 23, Issue 31 | 27th October 2023

Dear Parents and Caregivers, Today is World Teacher’s Day. On behalf of the entire Reddam Community, I would like to express my gratitude and admiration for all our teachers do to impact the lives of the students in their care positively. Today is a moment to celebrate and recognise their hard work and commitment. I speak on behalf of all parents when I thank them all today, coupled with immense appreciation. Siblings Aiza (HSC Class of 2022), Abdullah, and Aish Khurram of our school were instrumental in producing the gratitude video sent to us from Little Helpers on the Run with their appreciation.

The HSC Class of 2023 has now completed three weeks of Final HSC examinations. With many students already finished and celebrating, one can only feel sorry for those who still get to write their last exams next week. PDHPE on Monday, Geography on Wednesday, and Physics and Dance on Thursday. To those students, keep going and keep the motivation levels up. You are nearly there. As one Year group ends their journey at our school, the next starts theirs. On Sunday, we hosted the Year 7 Orientation Day for students starting their Middle School journey next year. Students had the opportunity to meet and mingle with each other, make new friends, write class placement tests, and have a fun morning in their new school. I thank Mrs. Karney and her team of teachers for organising and ensuring the smooth running of the day, together with the Year 8 students who will be the school leaders in 2024.

On the other end, we celebrate Saturday night's Ten Year Reunion of HSC Class of 2013. We look forward to welcoming them back to the school and catching up on their stories.

On Tuesday, the Women's Empowerment Portfolio held a bake sale and mufti day, with all proceeds going towards the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC). We were inspired after seeing a news article reporting that both Israeli and Palestinian women were marching for peace, despite the

political conflict in the middle east. We found that the ICRC was providing aid to both Israeli and Palestinian civilians who were displaced, taken hostage, and separated from family, advocating for overall peace . It was a very successful day and we are happy to share that we raised over $550.

The Year 11 Prize Giving and 2024 Leadership Induction ceremony was held Wednesday night in Adelaide Hall, where we honoured excellence in Sport, Performing and Visual Art, and Academics. Hosted by Julie Vince, their Year Coordinator, I thank her for all her work for this evening and with the year group throughout the year.

For Academics (having an SCI of 93% and above) Florence Gatt: Academics (SCI 93%) Sophia Budkin: Academics (SCI 93.3%)

For Full Colours in three disciplines Jacinta Shevelev for Academic, Music, and Drama Katerina Lyaschenko for Academic, Music, and Visual Art Samuel Weidler for Academic, Music, and Drama Adi Alroy for Academic, Music, and Drama

For Sport Oliver Sacks for Soccer for making the Australian School Boy Team. Sydney FC U18 Team.

Mr Kable reports that the students involved in Mountain Biking have been continuing their fun-filled adventures on Saturday mornings, and last weekend, they were enjoying Mill Creek. BMX riding is a great way for students to stay active, have fun, and learn new skills.

We would like to invite you to our Spring Recital on Monday evening. It's our final concert for the year and a large celebration of ensembles and student collaboration. Our jazz bands, string orchestra, choirs, and more will perform, featuring around 150 students from across the school. Performances will take place in Adelaide Hall from 7:00 pm - 8:30 pm.

Have a great weekend and week ahead, Dave Pitcairn

Music News

This week, we began an exciting performance partnership with Westfield Bondi Junction, where several of our singers had the opportunity to perform for a large and appreciative audience of members of the public. The students performed exceptionally well and were great ambassadors for our school, and we look forward to more exciting new opportunities for our students in the future.

Another standout moment this week was undoubtedly today's assembly, where the 'Battle of the Bands' brought an electric atmosphere. Our rock and pop bands gave exhilarating performances, infusing great energy into the assembly and leaving a lasting impression on everyone present.

Looking forward, there's much to anticipate. Next Monday, Adelaide Hall will be echoing with harmonies during our Spring Recital. This isn't just any recital; it's a showcase of teamwork and collaboration. Many of our talented ensembles will be performing, and what makes this event special is its emphasis on collaborative pieces with no solos. Our students have been diligently preparing for this grand finale to the year, and it promises to be an evening to remember. All are welcome to join us in Adelaide Hall on Monday at 7pm for the final recital of the year.

New single application for scholarships Students can now complete one form to be considered for most scholarships at the University of Sydney*. High School students will need their most recent school report or HSC trial results, to answer self-reflective questions about their motivation to study and let us know what areas of study they’re considering. To be eligible for scholarships via this form, students must have a University of Sydney course in their UAC preferences by 29 September. They only need to complete the form once (unless their circumstances change) and upon successful completion will be considered for equity and/or meritbased scholarships depending on their circumstances. Note, scholarships that have previously been awarded automatically (e.g. MySydney) will continue to be awarded automatically depending on a student’s eligibility. However, we still recommend students apply for scholarships using this form so they can be considered for as many as, and to the highest value, possible. * Some University of Sydney scholarships will still require individual application per scholarship. See sydney.edu.au/scholarships for a list of all scholarships, including terms and conditions. Admission pathways and entry schemes Our entry schemes help students make the most of their qualifications by recognising their circumstances, special achievements and other abilities and activities. Most of our entry schemes are currently open, with fast approaching application deadlines. To learn more and apply, students can visit the admission pathways webpage or email Sydney Future Students at admission.pathways@sydney.edu.au with questions. New admission scheme: Regional and Remote Entry Scheme The Regional and Remote Scheme – for domestic students residing in or attending a school in a regional or remote area – offers admission to a Sydney Uni undergraduate degree on a reduced ATAR. Students are also encouraged to submit an application to be considered for scholarships through the University's new single scholarship application form. Applications close 29 September and students must also have the University of Sydney listed as a preference on this date. Please note: most accommodation scholarships still require a separate application through the relevant college website. MySydney Entry and Scholarship Scheme MySydney offers eligible students residing in a low socio-economic areas entry on a reduced ATAR, an $8,500 per annum scholarship for the duration of their undergraduate degree and additional support. Students simply submit a UAC application and list the University of Sydney as a preference. If the student is eligible, we will notify them via email on the dates listed on the MySydney website.

University of Sydney Dual Degree with Sciences Po, France Travel abroad, immerse yourself in French culture, learn a new language and complete a dual degree with the University of Sydney’s Bachelor of Arts (Dual Degree, Sciences Po, France) and Bachelor of Economics (Dual Degree, Sciences Po, France).

Students must submit supplementary materials as part of the application. The first round deadline (recommended for domestic students) is 31 October 2023. For more information, visit our Studying Dual Degrees and International Opportunities webpages.

Scholarship Spotlight Browse our scholarships New single application for scholarships Students can now complete one form to be considered for most scholarships at the University of Sydney*. However, we still recommend students apply

for scholarships using this form so they can be considered for as many as, and to the highest value, possible. Apply now * Some University of Sydney scholarships will still require individual application per scholarship. See sydney.edu.au/scholarships for a list of all scholarships, including terms and conditions. Domestic undergraduate scholarships single application form We're dedicated to supporting your students throughout their time at university. We offer a wide variety of scholarships for domestic undergraduate students. To make the process easier, we've created a centralised form where students can be considered from a pool of $1.5 million worth of scholarships through one simple application. To be eligible for scholarships via this form, current Year 12 students must complete the form and have a University of Sydney course in their UAC preferences by 29 September. Visit the domestic undergraduate scholarships webpage to learn more about the eligibility criteria and application process, to view a list of the scholarships covered in this form, and to submit an application. UAC

Applications Applications are still steadily rolling in. Please remind students that to be considered for many highdemand courses, and to avoid a higher fee, they should lodge a UAC application before 29 September. If they wish to be considered for an SRS offer, both applications must be lodged by 18 September. Many people ask about the benefits of applying through UAC compared to applying directly to an institution for an early offer, so here are a few key points: •

Not all courses are available for early offers.

An early offer is not guaranteed.

A UAC application provides more options for preferences.

Students who have experienced difficulties/disadvantages in Year 11 or 12 can have their circumstances taken into account through an EAS application.

Students should make the most of their options and list different course preferences in their UAC application and their direct application. However, if they miss out on an early offer from a direct application they can add that course preference to their UAC application and compete for an offer based on their ATAR. The majority of students will be made an offer based on their ATAR and the hard work they have put into their Year 12 studies. Preferences While attending uni open days this year, the UAC Community Engagement team has answered many questions from students about how to list their preferences. In some cases a university has told them

they need to list a course as their number one preference in order to receive an offer, but the course is not their first choice. Students should always: •

place their dream course as their first preference

include a back-up course as a lower preference.

And they should find out: •

the previous lowest selection ranks for the course – is it a realistic choice?

if they are eligible for any adjustment factors.

For Term 1, 2024 entry, firm offers for Portfolio Entry will be issued in UAC December Round 2 (NSW and ACT applicants) and January Round 1 (Interstate and IB applicants). When is the Deadline?
