WELCOME TO THE 4TH EDITION OF THE CAMBRIDGE ART FAIR Community. Culture. Commerce. Thank you so much for coming along and supporting the 4th edition of Cambridge Art Fair. As an attendee you have become a vital part of a process that contributes significantly to the local, regional and national economy, supporting hardworking independent businesses and the careers of talented artists. If you have been to the fair before, you will already know that this event supports independent galleries and art dealers from all over the UK and beyond by giving them opportunities to showcase their portfolios to buyers of art in the eastern region.

This, in turn, supports the careers of all of the independent artists that they represent. Cambridge Art Fair also creates a high quality marketplace for buyers of art in the region, meaning that they don’t have to travel to one of the London art fairs in order to source the best work available- we have always worked hard to bring the best galleries and dealers to Cambridge and this year is no exception. This beautiful city is not some far flung suburb of London and it warrants, in fact it deserves it’s own cultural offering and identity. We are proud to be working with our many sponsors and partners to bring the best of the art industry to the region for one weekend each year. Cambridge Art Fair also supports the local economy by generating thousands of visits to the city centre across the four day event, many of whom patronise the surrounding shops, cafes and restaurants during their visit. The commercial sector in the region recognises the value of the event now: we are proudly supported by several high-quality businesses, meeting our goal of creating a bridge between commerce and culture, to the benefit of all involved. Our thanks go to all of the wonderful businesses that have supported the event this year, especially Elms Cambridge, Mattioli Woods, Cambridge Live, Cambridge News, Cambridge Magazine, Hotel Du Vin, Cambridge Champagne, Addenbrooke’s Charitable Trust, Parrot Print, Cambridge Plants & The British Shop. Your contribution is greatly appreciated. As always, the smooth running of the art fair relies on the commitment and professionalism of our volunteers and staff. We thank them all for their invaluable contribution- we simply couldn’t do it without them. We hope you enjoy the art fair this year and find something beautiful that you can treasure for many years to come. Thank you for coming. The Red Dot Team

Cambridge Art Fair provides you with an opportunity to select and acquire great art and live with it, experience it in your own environment, get to know it, share it with others- all with the reassurance of buying from professional dealers and galleries who have spent years, even decades, carefully selecting talented artists worthy of your investment. The art world can seem, to the outsider, like a secretive, unfamiliar and intimidating place. But it doesn’t have to be like that. We believe that great art should play an important part in everyone’s life. To make that happen for you, we make buying art at Cambridge Art Fair a safe and supportive experience for all, whether expert or novice. The combined knowledge and experience of the galleries and dealers exhibiting at Cambridge Art Fair will ensure that you are able to find the perfect piece of art to suit you and your needs, even if you don’t know what you are looking for yet! When you wander through the two halls that accommodate the art fair, you will discover high quality modern art from the 20th century all the way through to exciting contemporary work by some of todays leading British and international artists at a range of prices. So how about some tips on ‘how’ to buy?

The big secret is... there is no secret!

The most important thing to know about buying art, either as a one off or as the start of a collection, is that there’s no list of things that you need to know before you jump in. If you see a piece of art that you absolutely love and you want to buy it, then buy it! You don’t need to have credentials or a degree in Art History to start a collection, you just need to have a desire to collect and the means to pay for it. The more you expose yourself to art and the art world in general, the more you will be able to evaluate what is fundamentally good art, what suits your taste and how to build and develop your collection. If you are collecting for investment purposes then you will need to research as much as possible and more importantly build relationships with good quality, experienced dealers and galleries who can advise you further.

CambridgeArtFair.com

“The art world can seem to the outsider like an impenetrable, unfamiliar and intimidating place. But it doesn’t have to be like that. We believe that great art should play an important part in everyone’s life.” If however, you are collecting for your own enjoyment in the hope that your collection will increase in value over time, make sure that you like what you buy. It is you that will live with the art for many years so it has to be something that you are confident you will enjoy.

Ask questions

One of the major benefits of buying art from an art fair that has a vetting process, like Cambridge Art Fair, is that you know that the work on display has already met stringent criteria based on quality. Even so, if you have questions about a piece of work or the artist responsible, just ask the gallerist or dealer selling the work. The gallerist or dealer will have established a good relationship with the artist over a period of time and have invested themselves in that work because they believe it has merit. Don’t be nervous about asking ‘stupid’ questions - there’s no such thing. You could ask questions about the artist: What are their credentials? Where have they exhibited? What is their training? Can you see the artist’s CV? Or you could ask about the work: When was the art produced? What is it’s provenance, it’s history? What method and materials did the artist use?

Set a budget

Like you would with any major purchase- set a budget. Be realistic with your budget - if you are looking for a huge, signature piece for your home then you should already know that £200 will be unlikely to get you what you need. However, if you are looking for a small framed print for a corner somewhere in your home then you should have lots of choice at £200.

Art Collecting Made Easy

Cambridge Art Fair features work that begins at a very affordable £75 and goes all the way up to the tens of thousands and beyond. Be prepared for the possibility you will see something you absolutely love but is completely beyond your budget. Whatever you fall in love with, know that you have options available.

The ‘Own Art’ scheme

Many of our dealers and galleries participate in the Arts Council funded ‘Own Art’ scheme which gives you an opportunity to pay for the art you love in ten interest free instalments. Ask them directly.

Know your own taste

As mentioned above, if you are collecting for your own enjoyment in the hope that your collection will increase in value over time, make sure that you like what you buy. You should get into the habit of exploring different styles and periods, researching Artists and exposing yourself to art. Visit local museums and galleries to see what appeals to you. You might find that a certain colour shade resonates with you or that you have a penchant for abstracted landscapes. The simple act of looking at art will enable you to identify what art you like and, therefore, what art you should buy. You can educate yourself and develop your taste over a period of time but, ideally, it should come down to whether or not you actually enjoy a piece of art.

5

Prints

Prints offer an affordable option when buying art but it’s not quite as simple as buying a reproduction of an image. There are many different types of print: engravings, lithographs, screen prints, aquatints, linocuts and woodblock prints are some of the most common types. For several of those methods, the Artist uses a specific method to create an original image on a surface, such as wood, metal or stone. They would then apply paint or ink and then create a print onto paper. This is called an original print because each one is slightly different to the others. These types of print are usually produced by the Artist’s hand and will, most likely, be limited to a small run. There are other types of print that do not necessarily involve the artist in the reproduction process, such as lithographs and giclée prints (digital prints using inkjet printers). Always ask which method was used to produce a print before you buy it. Ordinarily, it is important to only buy limited edition prints, whether lithograph, giclée or any of the ‘Artist hand’ methods. Notable exceptions to this rule are vintage posters and prints by some of todays more celebrated or infamous Artists, such as Banksy and Damien Hirst, which are available in large or unlimited editions.

Cambridge Art Fair Creates Collectors

23

Every year since 2013, thousands of people have come to Cambridge Art Fair to look at, experience and acquire original art. Our visitors range from first-time buyers looking for their first painting, all the way through to seasoned collectors who are looking for a specific masterpiece. Luckily, Cambridge Art Fair packs an incredibly diverse range of beautiful art into the Guildhall every year so there really is something for everyone. From modern masters like Picasso, Dali, Matisse & Kalo, right up to contemporary art by today’s most recognised names, such as Emin, Blake & Banksy, our wonderful exhibitors have got it all. Some of our visitors have been kind enough to share their stories with us... OOi is a leading architecture practice based in M Cambridge. Their approach is influenced by the principles of Dutch design and the name, pronounced ‘moy’, connects with their Dutch roots. MOOi means ‘all things beautiful’. The practice has earned a reputation for contemporary, sustainable design with extensive experience working on projects across a range of market sectors, including projects for The University of Cambridge and its Colleges, private residential new build and redesign commissions, multiple residency development projects and commercial offices. MOOi is owned by Cambridge resident Aidan Gutteridge, father of two young sons and a collector of contemporary art. Aidan and his partner Anja have visited the fair every single year. In 2013, the inaugural fair, they walked into the halls and something happened that they weren’t expecting- they both fell in love with a pair of iconic screen prints by the celebrated ‘Street Artist’ Pure Evil. “They were on the second stand we visited and, although we weren’t actively looking to buy anything, we knew we had to have them straight away, it would have been impossible to have walked away from them!”

“The art fair is a fantastic Cambridge event. If you’re looking to make an art purchase you’re unlikely to find a more comprehensive range of pieces in one place. ‘Mel Ferrer’s Nightmare’ & ‘Prince Philip’s Nightmare’ now grace the wall of their very lovely apartment on Hills Road. What attracted them to the prints? “The bright colours and the originality of the images, the prints are large and eye catching and a real talking point for everyone who sees them. They’re unexpected and slightly unnerving, we love them!” Aidan and Anja were reassured by the experience of buying from experienced professionals at Cambridge Art Fair. “The buying experience was easy and quick - we were instantly drawn to the prints, liaised with the dealer and purchased them a few minutes later. We took them home with us and had them hung straight after returning from the fair!” They’ve had a high opinion of the event ever since that first experience in 2013. “The art fair is a fantastic Cambridge event. If you’re looking to make an art purchase you’re unlikely to find a more comprehensive range of art in one place. We can’t wait to see what we discover at the fair this year…”

Haddenham resident Stuart Hay is Acting Director of Estates & Facilities at Cambridge University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust. He’s been acquiring original art for many years and has collected around ten paintings and prints so far, mostly by local Artists. In 2015 Stuart came along to Cambridge Art Fair for the first time. “I’ve not been to many art fairs before and so wasn’t sure what expect.” But that first experience was a positive one. “It was very reassuring to know that all of the galleries and dealers in the fair have enough confidence in the skill and talent of each Artist that they would represent them.” A couple of paintings in particular caught his eye but, eventually, Stuart decided on a large painting by Mark Poprawski on the Josephine Harper Gallery stand. Why that particular painting? “I loved the depth of the image and the subtle changes in the light of the sky. It’s an amazingly atmospheric painting.” Poprawski, a Norwich art graduate, is well-known for the atmospheric quality of his paintings, inspired by the drama of the Cornish land and seascapes that he is exposed to as a resident of Cornwall.

“It’s a really friendly fair and a great place to buy good quality art. The advice and knowledge that the exhibitors offer is invaluable. I can’t wait to go back. Does Stuart buy art for investment or purely for enjoyment? “Purely to enjoy it. This particular painting is in our dining room so I get to look at it regularly. I really enjoy experiencing the painting on a daily basis.” Will Stuart be back in 2016? “Yes, definitely. I’ll be bringing my wife Anna along this year as I’d like her to choose a piece of art this year. It’s a really friendly fair and a great place to buy good quality art. The advice and knowledge that the exhibitors offer is invaluable. I can’t wait to go back.” Anthonine Arts-Zetteler is the founder and lead consultant for Cambridge Wills & Legal Services. As an Affiliate Member of the Society of Trust and Estate Practitioners (STEP) and a Fellow Member of the Institute of Professional Will Writers, she is fully trained and offers many years of experience in professional will writing, advising clients on all aspects, as well as associated legal services including Lasting Powers of Attorney, Inheritance Tax and Estate Planning. S he is also a repeat visitor to Cambridge Art Fair, visiting every edition so far and has bought work on more than one occasion. “The event has gone from strength to strength over the years. The art available is fantastically varied, for every taste and budget. There is something for everyone and you are bound to see something you like.” In fact, she now has a carefully selected collection of five pieces of original art at home to enjoy. At the 2015 edition of the art fair, Anthonine bought a charming painting from Karl at The Darryl Nantais Gallery based in Linton. “It’s a small painting by Natalie Rymer, an artist from East Sussex. It’s called ‘The Stag Mug’. ” What attracted her to this particular painting? “The colours and the happy, quirky image.”

Cambridge Art Fair Creates Collectors

25

What did Anthonine buy at her previous visits to the fair? “I bought a piece in 2013, the first year of the fair. This was a painting by an American artist James Shilaimon. We bought it through Blue Contemporary. We were attracted by the image; quirky and colourful!” She clearly enjoys visiting Cambridge Art Fair every year. “It is a unique event for Cambridge and gives artists and galleries local and further afield the opportunity to showcase so much beautiful art. We have found that the gallery owners are very happy to explain the technique and the meaning of the work. This makes the art come alive.” Sarah Decent owns Modish on Green Street, the best shoe shop in Cambridge. We featured Sarah’s story last year and it inspired this entire ‘Collector’s Stories’ section. In fact, people were recognising her at last year’s event after seeing her photograph in the fair guide, “I felt like a minor celeb!!” During her visit in 2014, Sarah bought a very beautiful painting called ‘The Lake’ by the local Artist Tess Recordon, the top painting in the photograph to the right. “I was wandering around, sipping wine and admiring all the fantastic art when it happened; I glanced up towards the stage and there it was- a painting so beautiful I stopped dead in my tracks.” Sarah returned to the art fair in 2015 and found a painting on the stand of Hanoi Art House, a Vietnamese specialist- a painting by an award-winning Artist called Bui Trong Du. “Angie (owner of Hanoi Art House) was very very friendly and knowledgeable. I almost felt as though I knew the artist by the time she’d finished describing him!” Having been to Cambridge Art Fair twice and having bought original art on both occasions, Sarah has a high opinion of the event. “I think it’s fantastic- a brilliant combination of local and national artists, covering just about all genres and styles. It’s a really lovely and friendly fair too. I’m no art expert and I’ve never been made to feel as though that’s a problem at all!” She already has around 15 pieces of original art at home so there is a good chance that we’ll see her again this year, hunting for that something special. If you see her there, don’t be afraid to ask her for her autograph… Paulo Anaia is the founder of P A Safety Management Limited, a leading provider of compliance solutions for the built environment, including health and safety services. He attended Cambridge Art Fair in 2015, for the first time and was impressed by the variety and calibre of art available to view and buy. He saw a limited edition print called ‘Don’t Break My Heart’ by the Urban Artist Rourke Van Dal. The image, a boy and girl playing a game of conkers with heart shaped conkers immediately resonated with Paulo due to his health and safety background. “I was delighted to see it had a conkers theme and I knew then and there I wanted it. A few years ago, the media and a certain politician picked up a myth about children being banned from playing conkers at school due to health and safety regulations.” One of only twenty-five prints, ‘Don’t Break My Heart’ now takes pride of place in Paulo’s home office. He was impressed with the buying process at Cambridge Art Fair. “Everything was easy. My print was carefully packaged for free. The wrapping station even provided a sturdy makeshift handle for carrying it home. It was already framed in a style and colour that suited me too.” If you have bought art at Cambridge Art Fair and would like to be featured in a future ‘Collector’s Story’, please email us.
