Contents & Welcome Message
WELCOME TO THE 5TH EDITION OF THE CAMBRIDGE ART FAIR Cambridge Art Fair is 5 years old already. What a wonderful journey those 5 years have been with ups and downs (mostly ups!), wonderful new experiences and many friendships along the way.
Art, Eleven & A Half, Clifton Fine Art, The Darryl Nantais Gallery, Colourbox, Robert Fogell Gallery & Carina Haslam Art. There are plenty of newcomers this year too, boasting fantastic portfolios of artists from all over the world.
It takes a year of planning, over a hundred people and two and a half days to build the best and biggest sale of 20th and 21st Century art in the eastern region. Over the years, tens of thousands of people have visited the event, some visit purely out of interest and others come specifically to buy a piece of art. Whatever your motivation for attending Cambridge Art Fair, we love to hear your stories and receive your feedback.
Our thanks, as ever, go to all of the wonderful businesses that have supported the event this year, especially our Private View sponsor Mattioli Woods plc. We would also like to thank Ricky, Dawn & the team at Iliffe Media for the media partnership with Cambridge Independent & Velvet Magazine. The coverage written by Alice Ryan has, as always, been exceptional.
An event like Cambridge Art Fair is so much more than the sum of it’s parts and it contributes much more greatly to the cultural environment in the East of England than a three and a half day annual event really should. It creates a bridge between commerce and culture too, evidenced by the continued support and sponsorship of Mattioli Woods plc and the many other local businesses that choose to get involved year after year.
Many thanks to Michelle & the team at Hotel Du Vin for another wonderful Press Launch event in September. Much love and appreciation goes to Cambridge Champagne for providing our Champagne Bar, The British Shop for providing our Wrapping Station & to the wonderful Cambridge Plants for making the Guildhall look so green and lush. Many thanks also to our Charity Partner Addenbrooke’s Charitable Trust.
As ever, Cambridge Art Fair is one of the few UK art fairs that is able to offer a good mixture of 20th and 21st Century art. This year we have The Raverat Archive, promoting the catalogue of Gwen Raverat, one of Cambridge’s most celebrated 20th Century Artists. 20th Century specialists Oriel Fine Art, Julian Hartnoll, Granta Fine Art & Berlin Walls are also participating this year.
As always, the smooth running of the art fair relies on the commitment and professionalism of our volunteers and staff. We thank you all for your invaluable contribution- we really couldn’t do it without you.
If you’ve visited Cambridge Art Fair before you will be pleased to see the return of many of our most popular regulars, such as Lime Tree Gallery, Byard
Fleur & I hope you enjoy the art fair this year and find something beautiful that you can enjoy for many years. Thank you all for coming.

Cambridge Art Fair provides you with an opportunity to select and acquire great art and live with it, experience it in your own environment, get to know it, share it with others- all with the reassurance of buying from professional dealers and galleries who have spent years, even decades, carefully selecting talented artists worthy of your investment. The art world can seem, to the outsider, like a secretive, unfamiliar and intimidating place. But it doesn’t have to be like that. We believe that great art should play an important part in everyone’s life. To make that happen for you, we make buying art at Cambridge Art Fair a safe and supportive experience for all, whether expert or novice. The combined knowledge and experience of the galleries and dealers exhibiting at Cambridge Art Fair will ensure that you are able to find the perfect piece of art to suit you and your needs, even if you don’t know what you are looking for yet! When you wander through the two halls that accommodate the art fair, you will discover high quality modern art from the 20th century all the way through to exciting contemporary work by some of todays leading British and international artists at a range of prices. So how about some tips on ‘how’ to buy?
The big secret is... there is no secret!
The most important thing to know about buying art, either as a one off or as the start of a collection, is that there’s no list of things that you need to know before you jump in. If you see a piece of art that you absolutely love and you want to buy it, then buy it! You don’t need to have credentials or a degree in Art History to start a collection, you just need to have a desire to collect and the means to pay for it. The more you expose yourself to art and the art world in general, the more you will be able to evaluate what is fundamentally good art, what suits your taste and how to build and develop your collection. If you are collecting for investment purposes then you will need to research as much as possible and more importantly build relationships with good quality, experienced dealers and galleries who can advise you further.

“The art world can seem to the outsider like an impenetrable, unfamiliar and intimidating place. But it doesn’t have to be like that. We believe that great art should play an important part in everyone’s life.” If however, you are collecting for your own enjoyment in the hope that your collection will increase in value over time, make sure that you like what you buy. It is you that will live with the art for many years so it has to be something that you are confident you will enjoy.
Ask questions
One of the major benefits of buying art from an art fair that has a vetting process, like Cambridge Art Fair, is that you know that the work on display has already met stringent criteria based on quality. Even so, if you have questions about a piece of work or the artist responsible, just ask the gallerist or dealer selling the work. The gallerist or dealer will have established a good relationship with the artist over a period of time and have invested themselves in that work because they believe it has merit. Don’t be nervous about asking ‘stupid’ questions - there’s no such thing. You could ask questions about the artist: What are their credentials? Where have they exhibited? What is their training? Can you see the artist’s CV? Or you could ask about the work: When was the art produced? What is it’s provenance, it’s history? What method and materials did the artist use?
Set a budget
Like you would with any major purchase- set a budget. Be realistic with your budget - if you are looking for a huge, signature piece for your home then you should already know that £200 will be unlikely to get you what you need. However, if you are looking for a small framed print for a corner somewhere in your home then you should have lots of choice at £200.
Art Collecting Made Easy
Cambridge Art Fair features work that begins at a very affordable £75 and goes all the way up to the tens of thousands and beyond. Be prepared for the possibility you will see something you absolutely love but is completely beyond your budget. Whatever you fall in love with, know that you have options available.
The ‘Own Art’ scheme
Many of our dealers and galleries participate in the Arts Council funded ‘Own Art’ scheme which gives you an opportunity to pay for the art you love in ten interest free instalments. Ask them directly.
Know your own taste
As mentioned above, if you are collecting for your own enjoyment in the hope that your collection will increase in value over time, make sure that you like what you buy. You should get into the habit of exploring different styles and periods, researching Artists and exposing yourself to art. Visit local museums and galleries to see what appeals to you. You might find that a certain colour shade resonates with you or that you have a penchant for abstracted landscapes. The simple act of looking at art will enable you to identify what art you like and, therefore, what art you should buy. You can educate yourself and develop your taste over a period of time but, ideally, it should come down to whether or not you actually enjoy a piece of art.

Prints
Prints offer an affordable option when buying art but it’s not quite as simple as buying a reproduction of an image. There are many different types of print: engravings, lithographs, screen prints, aquatints, linocuts and woodblock prints are some of the most common types. For several of those methods, the Artist uses a specific method to create an original image on a surface, such as wood, metal or stone. They would then apply paint or ink and then create a print onto paper. This is called an original print because each one is slightly different to the others. These types of print are usually produced by the Artist’s hand and will, most likely, be limited to a small run. There are other types of print that do not necessarily involve the artist in the reproduction process, such as lithographs and giclée prints (digital prints using inkjet printers). Always ask which method was used to produce a print before you buy it. Ordinarily, it is important to only buy limited edition prints, whether lithograph, giclée or any of the ‘Artist hand’ methods. Notable exceptions to this rule are vintage posters and prints by some of todays more celebrated or infamous Artists, such as Banksy and Damien Hirst, which are available in large or unlimited editions.

Charity Partner: Addenbrookeʼs Charitable Trust
The link between art and health is a convincing one. There is compelling evidence that making and viewing art can reduce stress, improve mental health and can be a powerful therapeutic tool. That is why Addenbrooke’s Charitable Trust is delighted to be the Cambridge Art Fair’s charity partner this year. There is a strong tradition of art at the hospital through its Addenbrooke’s Arts programme, which enhances the hospital environment and improves the experience of patients, visitors and staff through an innovative, stimulating and engaging arts programme. None of this is funded through the NHS, but relies on charitable donations and fundraising.
17
The Art Of Healing
Thanks to the generosity of kind-hearted individuals, it is possible to improve the hospital environment using visual arts, run a programme of arts events for patients, staff and visitors and integrate art into new buildings on the hospital campus. The new haematology day unit, which just opened on 18 October, is one case in point. Previously, people suffering from blood cancer and other blood disorders were treated in cramped conditions on the tenth floor and, with the number of patients steadily rising, the unit was becoming a stressful environment in which to work and be treated. But a new, lighter and brighter, ground-floor space was found and the provision of art was built into the refurbishment plans from the very beginning. And the transformation is remarkable. From the etched windows to the hand-pulled prints of Cambridge, oils of flower-filled meadows and
framed objects of intrigue, the unit is now a welcoming, calm and peaceful space. Many of the artists commissioned for the unit are local and are featured in the Cambridge Art Book on show at the Cambridge Art Fair. So why not take a look as you browse the stalls. If you would like to know how you can help transform patients’ lives at Addenbrooke’s by getting involved in fundraising, making a donation or volunteering, please visit act4addenbrookes.org.uk or call the office on 01223 217757 – the team would love to hear from you.
