BUSINESS PWANI PUBLICATION - APRIL 2013 VOL 24

HAVE YOU KEPT YOUR PROMISE? It's time to review and actualise your resolutions 2013

January is already four months past and it would be wise to take a moment and look at which New Year’s resolutions we have kept and which are broken. But even wiser is to look back at our resolutions and ask “are these truly resolutions?”

PWANI EMPLOYEE OF THE MONTH 1.

Resolutions are good; they give us direction, probably even purpose. But one must differentiate a resolution from a wish list or a general goal. The root word or resolution is solution and it simply asks us to come up with measures and new solutions (re-solutions) to solve and to grow from our problems. Examples of common resolutions are like: “I will be a better student”, “This year i will begin savings plan” or “I will work with more passion ”. They are up in the air, lacking in concrete definition. No wonder many times we fail in our resolution as we set out big goals and dreams without a specific action. And this is what a resolution is as well, a set of actions. With this, a resolution might be better stated as such: “I will set aside 100 shillings for savings a day”, “I will not go onto facebook until I have completed my days work.” and “I will spend 15 minutes a day talking to my parents”. Though this approach has no guarantee of 100% success, it allows us to live our resolutions specifically, consistently and every day. From dreams up in the sky they have become actions on the ground, which are easier to do and grasp but contribute to a larger purpose. This month we delve into the lives of a few of our collegues, know their goals, what they have achieved and obstacles they have overcame along the way. We also introduce to you a new vibrant sales team that recently joined us as well as reports on the fun after work activities we have been up to this month. Enjoy the read!

Knowing me Knowing You By Mary Olinda

My name is Lilian Delight Magio. I’m married and soon I will be a mother. I’m privileged to be enjoying marriage for five years now, and you are welcome to see me if you need advise on living a happy marriage (ha-ha). I am a woman of integrity and a God fearing person. I’m a Receptionist here at Pwani since July, 2008. This was made possible courtesy of Aarti Malde. My daily routine is: I wake up at 5.00am to read my bible or an inspiration book and pray committing the rest of the day to God. Thereafter I prepare to come to work. I like serving people; I am a people’s person! This gives me the strength to come to work daily, the fact that I attend to someone and he or she is satisfied gives me satisfaction. I like helping people and one thing that I hate the most is gossip. I prefer to be on my own at times rather than have company that’s always talking about others. My New Year resolutions were to have a big family, to give God more time, to be myself and more courageous, to be around smart people who will help me be a better person and to spend my time wisely.

EHS Activity By Gilbert Mariaka

of the month April Theme- Good Housekeeping!

The committee that was steering the Pride and Care campaign. From right to left: Bhupesh, Prasad, Karisa, Sim, Wanyonyi and Robert. Behind the camera: Charity, Jacob, Andrew and Gilbert.

Efficient production and a good working environment are complementary. The elimination of inefficiencies and accident hazards caused by unfavourable conditions in and about the workplace is essential in getting the job done properly and safely. It has been proven that productivity levels are higher in highly organized workplaces. Not only that, unnecessary costs and wastages are also eliminated in such environments. This can be achieved by implementing pride and care (good housekeeping) techniques. The underlying philosophy of pride and care techniques is that it seeks to simplify one's work environment, reduce wastage and non-value-adding activities through a systematic process, thereby improving quality and productivity. These are some of the reasons that led to EHS coming up with Pride and Care campaign theme to enable Pwanians to improve quality and productivity. Keep it up EHS Department!

2. So far how much have you achieved in terms of those resolutions? Slow and steady wins the race. It’s too early to reach to conclusion. I have categorized the goals into long-term, intermediate and short-term. I feel that it’s better to accomplish smaller goals first than bigger/long term ones. So I have this all sorted out. Moreover, I have allotted time in my outlook calendar to work on my goals with dates. That will make me monitor my resolutions closely.
