2012 has been a further year in the development of Pwani & many things have happened. Change continues to be all around us and that is set to continue next year. The business environment has been tough this year and despite the dynamic and aggresive market environment, we need to stay focused on ensuring we meet our targets so that we can continue with our business for the years to come. As we approach the year end we all must continue to push harder than ever to meet our team and individual goals so the cumulative effect will go towards making up for our shortfalls. and some more Pwani members to witness the birth of an even better ‘Pwani Life!’ that’s going to bring Pwani and it’s operations to a whole brand new level. Having already been a few weeks since ‘Go Live’, I am a witness to that. Using Oracle just feels extremely good. Most departments are now required to coordinate their processes in order to harmonize a link across Pwani, a function that Oracle focuses on, just like the way it truly is a Relational Database System. Each one of us will be required to work together as a team unlike just being buried in silos. This in itself will be a great achievement as having harmonized operations in Pwani is what we are after.

over and over again and this time it is a good ending for that matter. We have done it- the ship has finally anchored! ERP is home and we are ‘live’. This is unbelievably amazing and truly speaking this milestone is a living proof of all the Pwani values. We are passionate, willing, and accountable, we never give up and we show initiative. All this can be summed up by the mere fact that we are ‘live on ERP’. It was indeed a long journey. 1st November, 2012 has just become one of the most remarkable dates in Pwani. It was the ‘Go Live’ date. Speaking from experience, we have just added another

ALL SMILES AS KIKAMBALA GETS APPROVAL STATUS It has been a long journey since the first full system audit was conducted by GSK (GlaxoSmithKline) in June 2011. GSK is a multinational company and is one of the leading producers of medicines, vaccines and consumer healthcare products such as Aquafresh toothpaste where glycerine is one of its main ingredients. The auditors that visit us are GSK’s Supplier Quality Auditors for Europe, Middle East and Africa and are based in Egypt and Nigeria. The audit scope covered all areas, activities, systems and controls associated with the manufacturing of glycerin. Since June last year, the QA department has been working hard on the corrective and preventive action plan which mostly included writing documents such as the Quality Manual, Corporate Procedures, Operating Procedures and Work Instructions. This could not be possible without team work. The departments that worked on this project include EHS, Maintenance, Fatty Acid Plant, Soap Finishing line & Logistics who also went through internal trainings in GMP and QHP that were conducted by QA and EHS. We also appreciate the support given by other departments such as Finance, Supply chain, Sales, Marketing and HR during the drafting and approval process of the Quality Manual and Corporate Procedures.
by Gilbert Mariaka
At the supplier training forum in Nairobi prior to the audit one of the participants who is also an approved supplier, mentioned that “if you manage to convince attempt-the supplier auditor, then you can convince any other auditor in the world”. So bring it on P&G, Cussons, Unilever,….! Mr. Riten Malde, Director of Operations-Kikambala was happy for the achievement; he said “Yesterday was a very proud moment for us at Kikambala as the Auditors from GSK Worldwide gave Pwani approved supplier status to now enable us to supply Glycerine to them for use in Aquafresh. Being on their 'approved supplier list' also means that any manufacturing facility of GSK around the world is able to approach us for supplies of Glycerine”. Mr. Rajan Malde, Board Director for HR, Legal and Statutory Affairs also commended the team: “This is great news! Well done to all those who were involved both directly & indirectly. Let’s build on this to make all our processes world class. We have the potential internally, we now need to work on these”.
This is a great achievement both internally and externally and with the same spirit we expect to enhance our Business Excellence.
As the CAPAs (Corrective actions and Preventive actions) were closed and implemented, a follow-up audit was scheduled on 2nd November 2012. During this audit, the auditors were satisfied by the evidence of the closure and implementation of the CAPAs and we were given the approval. | A CHRISTMAS PUBLICATION OF PWANI

STAYING SAFE THIS CHRISTMAS By Charity Mwangi
Many of us take for granted our safety and health during the holiday season. In the midst of the excitement of Christmas shopping, anticipation of gift exchange and relaxation of hanging with family and friends, we tend to “cut a lot of corners…” For some, it may be “more okay” to cut people off in traffic to get a good parking spot in the mall. Drinking and driving seems to be “more acceptable” during this time of year. Exercise habits go
straight into hibernation and large portions or high calorie foods are the tradition Just think… The entire year you have built a strong foundation is staying safe, keeping fit and eating healthy. The end of the year is near, so DON’T BLOW IT! A few things to keep in the back of your head, so you can make it to the next year’s starting point without stumbling:
1. Wear your seatbelt. One of the easiest things you can do to stay safe. People drive crazy during this time period, so protect yourself. 2. Don’t drink and drive. Just don’t get caught up! Spending Christmas or New Year’s in jail, or worse, just is not worth it. 3. Keep your workout schedule. The season can be stressful. The best way to work it out is to… Work it out! All it takes is 20 minutes. Try to get in five good workouts, but squeeze in a least three each week to stay on track. 4. Control your portions. When you eat! Limit yourself to one plate of food each meal and also include one half a plate of fruits and vegetables, one fourth a plate of whole grains and one fourth a plate of a lean meat. If you are trying to lose weight, eat of a saucer-sized plate and you can’t go wrong. 5. Be safe around fireworks. All it takes is one mistake… Be careful. 6. Stop smoking. Now is the time for a new start. Stop smoking not only for your health, but also take a minute to calculate how much money you can save over the next year if you quit! 7. Give as much as you can, be courteous, and don’t expect anything in return. You can eliminate almost all of your stress if you change your mindset. Be generous, but make disappointment impossible. Every moment is precious, and let Christ fulfill all your needs this season. Don’t look to other people for fulfillment. Instead, try to be what they may be looking for.

Enjoy yourself. Thank God that you had another year to grow. Sit back, relax and have a good time. Know how you will get home –plan ahead, particularly if you’re going to a part of town you do not know Eat before you go out and drink plenty of water or a soft drink between alcoholic drinks will help you not get drunk Let someone know where you’re going and what time you expect to get back. Ensure your mobile phone is charged and is in credit. Keep the money you need to get home separate so that you do not spend it. Watch how much you drink. It is much easier to do something risky or foolish when you’re drunk; and you’re much more likely to loose your keys, cash or phone when you’ve had too much to drink. . Do your best to drink less alcohol and drink more water during your night out. Do your best to stick to the same drink, try and not mix your drinks and always make sure you have your drink with you. If you leave your drinks unattended then DONOT drink it. Drinks do get spiked with drugs 14. Always leave a club or pub with a friend or group of friends. 15. Pre-book a licensed taxi, or know the locations of official taxi ranks. 16. Walking may not be the best option, but if you have to, do not walk home alone in the dark. Keep to well-lit busy streets, main roads and footpaths. Avoid badly lit areas, parks, alleyways and underpasses. 17. Taking drugs is illegal. However if you do then do not buy drugs from someone you have just met. Most of the time drug dealers at clubs / bars are selling to the masses and are not selling you what you think you may be buying. They can easily combine it with chemicals that will be very harmful to you and your body, and you could have a very bad reaction to it. 18. Be sensible in your approach. If you are talking to a stranger for the first time then do not give him personal details about yourself like where you live. Do not make yourself vulnerable. 19. Being confident and assertive can assist you from staying out of danger. This is reflected in your body language and demeanor. Becoming drunk and very loud can sometimes draw the wrong people towards you.

Do Have a Merry Christmas and a Super saving season! God Bless you!
The Perfect Gift’ by Brenda Achieng
A the end of year approaches, we have As m ur many thoughts going through our minds. For some us we are glad the m yyear is ending, others wish theree was more time or there are even some m me who have not stopped to think of what ha at it means For me, I have Christmas carols going on in my head. Christmas is a time to remind us that there is hope in the world and even for those who do not believe, we are forced to stop coz everywhere is closed. Anyway, talking about Christmas carols one of my old time favorites stands as:- Twelve days of Christmas. How nice if it would actually happen that someone would give me gifts for twelve days consecutively(deep Sigh)…. Wishful thinking! On the twelfth day of Christmas, my true love gave to me... 12 Drummers Drumming 9 Ladies Dancing 6 Geese-a-Laying 3 French Hens
11 Pipers Piping 8 Maids-a-Milking 5 Gold Rings 2 Turtle Doves
10 Lords-a-Leaping 7 Swans-a-Swimming 4 Colly Birds And a Partridge in a Pear Tree.
The Twelve Days of Christmas” is a cumulative song, meaning that each verse is built on top of the previous verses. There are twelve verses, each describing a gift given by “my true love” on one of the twelve days of Christmas. Mostly I hum and make up verses as I go except for day five. I am not sure whether its because it’s the only seemingly acceptable gift to me or because its sang as golden rings. Wouldn’t know why anyone would think 8 milking maids are a gift to sing about unless they had many cows and needed someone to relieve them of milking for that day. Growing up in the 80’s I'd really look forward to Christmas. This is the one of the times (apart from Birthdays) when one is allowed receive and give out gifts for no reason other than its Christmas! My creative side was as developed as a result of hours spent trying to ‘custom make’ the perfect gift for my family and friends. Such heartache did I get when I realized that my labor of love was received with pleasure and there after locked up in the drawer never to see the light of day ever! I learned to give ‘proper’ gift. What immense thrill that there is in seeing you ‘beloved’ wearing the Christmas shirt This Christmas, why not give ‘wanted’ gifts that have the chance to see the light of day by taking time to find out what you the loves of your life truly cherish and then give it to them (if you can afford to). Early Christmas For Kids By Neelma Shah
Christmas is the perfect time to settle down to some good kids crafts. Crafting will keep your kids busy and take away some of their impatience and excitement while ile they wait for Christmas Day to arrive, and with familiess and friends visiting your house there is no better time to o display some of your children’s crafty talents proudly!
10.
Start a new tradition this Christmas, and create your own Christmas tree ornaments, decorations and gifts. Homemade Christmas gifts are not only a cheap alternative, but they add a personalized touch to a gift anyone would be excited to receive. The Pwani Wordsmiths have put this guide together detailing our favorite easy Christmas craft projects for kids! Enjoy!
Cereal Wreaths Take a box of Shredded Wheat or other cereal of the same texture (especially if some has gone stale before you had a chance to eat it!). Pour glue into a bowl and add green food coloring drops at a time until you have the right color. Let the kids roughly break apart the Shredded Wheat into the bowl. As you stir the wheat into the glue, it will break up further. The kids can do this with their hands! Add more wheat or colored glue to get the consistency right. Take a spoonful and shape into a wreath. While the mixture needs to hold together, do not press too tightly together or you will lose the texture. Place on wax or greased paper to dry. Once they are all on the paper, coat with another layer of glue to hold them together. Once dry, embellish with small red beads and a tiny red bow, and hang with ribbon.
Reindeer Art Supply List: • brown paper, for the reindeer’s face (you can even use used brown paper bags) • white, green or red as the base page • black and white crayons or markers,

Wrapping Paper Chains You will need: 4 sheets of wrapping paper with different patterns (or 4 pieces of wrapping paper cut from rolls to about 50cm by 1m) Glue stick and stapler
Instructions: 1. Pair the paper up and then glue each pair together with wrong sides facing. This is quite tricky to do to get the paper to stay flat and avoid bumps and is best done by an adult. The trick is to lay one piece on a flat surface, put glue across the top fifth and carefully line up and stick on the second piece. these paper chains look extra pretty! The variety of wrapping papers makes Continue to stick down a bit at a time. When dry trim the edges so you have two rectangles of paper. 2. Cut these rectangles into strips. 3. Take one of these strips and staple or glue the ends together to form a loop. Take a strip from the second set of paper patterns and thread it through the paper loop, stapling or gluing to form a loop. Repeat with a strip from the first set but turn it over so the other design is on top, and again repeat with a piece from the second set also turned over to show the other pattern. Repeat, continuing 11. the pattern until you run out of paper strips or you decide the chain is long enough.

For the mango and coconut relish • 75g/2½oz desiccated coconut, just covered with boiling water and set aside to soak for 30 minutes • ½ tsp mustard seeds • 2 tsp caster sugar • ½ tbsp rum • pinch salt • 2 ripe mangoes, peeled, stones removed, julienned • 2 red chillies, cut in half, seeds removed, very finely sliced • 1-2 limes, juice only • handful fresh mint leaves
Preparation method
2. Stir in the carrots, parsnips, sweet potatoes and potatoes and continue to cook for 4-5 minutes, or until softened and goldenbrown. Add the vegetable stock (or water), bay leaves, tomato purée, soft dark brown sugar and crushed cashew nuts and stir to combine. Season, to taste, with salt and freshly ground black pepper. 3. Bring the mixture to the boil, then reduce the heat until the mixture is simmering. Simmer for 15-20 minutes, or until the vegetables are tender, adding extra stock if the mixture becomes too dry. (The sauce should be thick enough to just coat the vegetables.) 4. Add the beans and spinach, cook for a further three minutes, or until the beans are just tender, then stir in the cream. Add half the lime juice and season, to taste, with salt and freshly ground black pepper, adding more lime juice, to taste, as necessary 5. Meanwhile, for the mango and coconut relish, transfer the soaked coconut to a food processor (squeeze the coconut to remove any excess water). Add the mustard seeds, caster sugar, rum and salt and blend to a coarse paste. 6. Layer the mango slices with spoonfuls of the coconut paste onto a serving plate, squeezing over the lime juice and a sprinkle of chilli between each layer. Sprinkle the mint over the top of the relish. (If you’re preparing the relish ahead of time, add the mint just before serving.) 7. Serve the hot root vegetables scattered with chopped cashew nuts, and spoon the relish alongside.
1. For the root vegetables, heat the oil in a casserole over a medium heat and add the onions. Fry for 4-5 minutes, or until golden-brown, stirring well to ensure they don’t burn. Add the garlic, ginger and chilli and cook for a further 5-6 minutes, stirring regularly, then add the spices and cook for a further minute, or until fragrant.
