ATTITUDE THE KEY TO NEW BEGINNINGS Welcome to 2013! It’s a brand new year which means it’s time to reflect on the past and become a better you. Usually, a new year gives us the feeling that we get to have a new beginning, so I thought this would be the perfect time to think about our attitude towards life. The possibility of us having our best year ever this year has a lot to do with our ATTITUDE. A life coach friend recently shared a scenario from one of her seminars. At the seminar there was one happy-go-lucky fellow and a CEO of a major firm in Kenya. My friend asked the CEO whether he was happy. The CEO began to talk about all the things that he could be doing that would cause him to feel more satisfied and happy with his life. My friend then turned to the happy-go-lucky chap and asked him the same question. He replied, “Absolutely! Everyday above ground is a good day!” Do you see how the difference between these two responses says everything about the quality of life that awaits each of these persons? What would your response be to the same question? How do you approach your life? Imagine if you made a decision to endorse the ATTITUDE of the happy fellow – Every day above ground is a good day! Instead of focusing on all that isn’t working, focus on what is working and practise it until it becomes a habit. Unfortunately it is natural to focus on the bad rather than the good, but this is one habit we have to ‘kick’! Some food for though before I wish you all the best to take that next step and reflect on how you think and how you would respond to the questions: You create your life in moments, not years. If you resolve to pay attention to your moments, you have the opportunity to create a great life. All the best for 2013! Pete, CEO.

Pwani BackLive2onSchool Radio Maisha! By Barnice Mumbua

Faidika na Pwani Life! This was the theme that we developed as we engaged our customers in partnership with Radio Maisha. Prolific Radio Presenter, Esther Ingolo had the fun of her life talking about our brands on air live on location at Naivas Eastgate, Nairobi. This is one of the ways through which pwani is communicating to the shopper - about the value derived in buying Pwani items. It has also helped in filling shopping baskets with amazing offers on all our ' Back2School' brands like White Wash, Diva and Sawa.

Pwani goes Digital in DispatchTechnology By Lucas Ouma

The Conveyor in action

Pwani has just celebrated the installation of the first phase of its modernization program at its factories in Jomvu and Kikambala. The installation of fully automated lines, the GMP assembly area and a 'Compact & Lean' -lay out, now positions these factories as modern, sustainable facilities. The latest digital loading conveyors have been installed to facilitate a faster turn-around in loading goods for dispatch from factories in Jomvu and Kikambala. This will enhance delivery of goods to consumers. It will also go a long way to ensure our brands are found in every household in East Africa.

The Conveyor in action

The system works like a clock, goods can now be transported on a line of over 200m, and loaded at the farthest end of a 40feet container without human contact. The System also does a count of each item it conveys, making logistical work error-free.

Secret Santa -

The Moment of Delight! By Anthony Odeo

Towards the end of 2012, we were all looking forward to the annual holiday season of Christmas. As family, it was time to share gifts with one another - who else would you rather receive a gift from than your colleague who poses as a Secret Santa! As we unwrapped the gifts, each one of us held our breath to know who our Secret Santa was, and voila - surprise - an amazing gift from the least expected source, what a delight! The exercise has made us better colleagues within Pwani. I can't wait for 2013's Secret Santa Edition. 4.

10 Resolutions to Make 2013 Your Best Year Ever By Naifin Taib

Every one of us has the ability to choose how we show up to life every day: sleeves rolled up or hands out. This determines how we treat life…and the New Year. Go into the New Year living consciously and connected to the inner strength that can affect how you think and act each and every day. You can't control the universe, but you can control your own house, so take personal control of how you approach your own life.

Daily habits and the rhythm of life take most of us captive, and we often end up doing what we've always done (boring!), and each year starts to look very much like the last. And while the arrival of a new year prompts many of us to make simple resolutions, like giving up procrastination, joining a gym, or cutting carbs, most of us don't use the start of each New Year to reset how we live to ensure we get the absolute best out of the entire year ahead. ...ctd to pg 7

| A PUBLICATION OF PWANI

...ctd from pg 6

So here are some tips on how to have a happier and more productive New Year-at home as well as at work. 1. Grab the year by the horns Look back at 2012 and celebrate your successes and identify your failures. Define what success looks like for 2013, setting audacious and achievable goals. Envision what you want the year to look like, literally. Write a list by month, write a year-end letter to yourself, or build a dream board, but don't go into 2013 without knowing what you want success to look like. Map out how you'll get there and what resources you'll need. 2. Values are valuables Revisit your values and what's important to you on a personal level (very important). These foundational principles should guide decisions around how you live and work. List the principles that are central to who you are and guide how you think and behave. Put your values to work daily throughout the year ahead. Do what Gandhi advised and, "be the change you want to see in the world." Decide what you really care about and the role you can play in helping make a positive change in the world. 3. Gratitude is the attitude It's a universal truth that grateful people are happy people. Start every day with gratitude and thanks for the chance to live your life in a country that promotes freedom and the opportunity to be your best. Say thank you often and mean it. 4. Trash the small stuff Like most people, you probably waste too much time on the small, insignificant, time-sucking, going-nowhere stuff. Make a list of the things you do that waste time every day and list what you're going to do to change your behavior. 5. Don't make money your everything As individuals we know money creates choices but it doesn't answer our need for purpose. Make sure money is not the reason or rationale behind what you do. Money, indeed, is not everything!

7. Be yourself and be courageous You don't have to follow the crowd. Take courageous steps to define the brand of you in 2013, reminding yourself of who you are, what makes you tick, and why you get out of bed every day. Don't feel compelled to follow the crowd. Be courageous and be proud of being yourself. 8. Surround yourself with smarts Don't surround yourself with “yes people” and fans. Friends and mentors should help make you a better version of yourself. Make sure the people around you are smarter and different than you. Have people in your life who will call you out and hold you accountable. 9. Time is like gold, so spend it wisely Time is the most valuable commodity we're given and an equal employer for that matter. Each one of us has 24 hours to spend equally. The weeks and months fly by, so plan your time carefully and don't waste it. Spend it generously with people who matter. Design time into your day that is only for you, not for work or for anyone else. A time where you think about your life and the role you're playing in it--and pursue something you love. It's the best gift you'll give yourself. 10. Do something new for the first time Learn to ride a horse, run a marathon, drive a car or play the guitar. There's nothing like the excitement and learning that comes from doing something completely new for the first time. As we go into 2013 I know we will face challenges, but I know they are to overcome, not to overwhelm. We're on this planet for a short time and every day we're alive is a gift. We all need a wake-up call to remind us that we are fortunate to live, work, and connect with the world. So let’s be grateful and have a fabulous 2013!

6. Everything you do matters You are the sum of all of your parts, relationships, and actions. Every action you take, and every conversation you have, matters. After all, it’s the small things that matter.

Suggested Reads

By Naifin Taib

Rather than set a new year’s resolution, author Gretchen Rubin decided to work towards a personal goal every month and write about it. These included: going to sleep earlier, being silly and getting her family together more often. Month by month, she made small adjustments in her everyday life and documented them on a blog (which was, in fact, a March resolution), later turned into this book. Her journey towards self-betterment has become an inspiring read, written with a unique sense of humour and sharp insight. The Happiness Project will remind readers to have fun in 2013, and help them attain happiness with the “Start Your Own Happiness Project” guide. REDEFINING LIVES - JANUARY 2013
