REDEFINING

BUSINESS PWANI PUBLICATION - SEPTEMBER VOL 18

1.

Editor’s Note

In the immortal words of James Brown: “It’s a man’s world, but it would be nothing, nothing without a woman…” September is all about women at ‘Redefining Business.’ A woman is a sophisticated person who gives a 360-degree value to the circle of life; within her is the power to create, nurture, empower and transform. As a woman and a mother, I admit that the journey to success is not an easy one. There are many challenges along the way, and even when you think everything is going smoothly, you find new potholes in the road. Fact is that, women are more powerful and resilient than men and can always look for different routes to get to their desired destination regardless of the potholes. So can women have it all? I ask.

Redefining Business this month features various articles centred around women. We also have a new column ‘Behind the Scenes‘ by Dickson Elber, starting this month - the column will educate us ‘yuppies‘ on what goes on at our factories that most of us don’t get to know about. Enjoy the read! Neelma - Editor

Welcome to Pwani life!

Dear Editor

Thanks for this privilege to share my views with you. I’m just wondering whether the suggestion box at the head office is active, it has been there for years but I don’t feel its impact, is it that we don’t share our suggestions or the Idea Bank has replaced it. What happened to the Crossword Puzzle? Hope to see the column in the next issue. I like the consistency in the Recipe Column; it’s very helpful to me as a wife, keep it up! Congratulations Kisii Sales Reps. Hope this initiative will be applied in other interior regions in the country. Finally, the new Fresh Fri package is Wow! Our competitors will see us and hide! I overheard a customer say he will be using his y Fresh Fri container to carry his drinkingg water to work every morning! Ha... ha...ha…

We like to keep the quiz and entertainment section fresh and different every month so we will be placing different quizzes, not just crosswords; however, this issue has a crossword. Please remember to always submit your answers for a chance to win a goodie bag. I am glad that you enjoy the recipe column. If you have recipes to share, please feel free to write to me. Editor Hi! This is just a congratulatory note from one of your avid readers, I have noticed that the issue is growing bigger in size and also informative content. Keep up the good work, can’t wait for the next issue.

2. Best regards, Lilian Delight.

Yours faithfully Benson Wariithi

Dear Lilian, k The team at Redefi fining Thank you so much for your feedback. Business always values our readers comments. To answer your questions, the Idea Bank has replaced our suggestion boxes. Mariam Saleh (mariam.saleh@pwani.net) can give you more information about the same.

Dear Benson, Thanks for your letter. It is always nice to hear that Redefining Business is serving its purpose. Let us know if there are any special topics you would like us to write about. Editor.

A SILENT DIVA: THE MOTHER OF PWANI!

by Anthony Odeo

Few of us if any, have an idea of what it takes to build a business the size of Pwani from scratch. We perhaps imagine that all it takes is hardwork and voila! Success! I bet we are all so wrong, Pwani’s journey has taken the effort of many however, none of them have had the silent - behind the scenes - passion and encouragement than our mama Mrs. Hansaben Ramesh Malde!

Mrs. Ramesh with her grand daughter | A PUBLICATION OF PWANI

She is the natural fit into the famous saying that ‘besides every successful man, is a woman‘. She was there before the birth of Pwani and she continues to be our mother.

ERP UPDATES

Welcome to Pwani life! by Naifin Taib

CRP1- Another Milestone! On the 30th of July we embarked on the Project’s Phase 2 which is CRP1 and Kikambala was where it all happened. CRP stands for Conference Room Pilot. This is a testing process which basically allows us to test the ERP software and its functionalities and validate whether the software will do the job i.e. meet our business requirements and expectations. Thus, this is considered one of the most important phases in the ERP implementation. It lasted for a whole week (30th July- 4th Aug).

Key User Training…. Putting Oracle into Practice! 5. It has been the time that most of us have been waiting for… to finally be able to drive Oracle and have a feel of it. After CRP1, we were all excited to start the Key User Training. This started on the 15th of August and lasted for about 2 weeks across all modules. From each section, ‘Key Users’ were selected. We call them this because they are expected to learn everything across the modules and they are the ones that shall be training the rest of the teams (end users) in their respective fields. The trainings involved learning about the basic navigation in Oracle, functional processes (current day to day transactions), reports overview and so on. This has been a very involving phase and a very interesting one too.

UAT…. User Acceptance Testing! UAT stands for User Acceptance Testing and it means exactly that! This is often the final step before rolling out the application and it basically involves the users to test the system before ‘accepting’ it. This type of testing gives the users the confidence that the application being delivered to them meets their requirements. All this happened between the 10th and 16th of September. UAT focuses on the functionality and the usability of the application rather than the technical aspects. Reaching up to this stage means that we are almost there… to GO-LIVE! It is just a matter of counting days now before we can put all this wonderful experience into action! Hooray! This time, for sure, we shall achieve our dream of becoming one of the prestigious organizations to use the ERP System. Welcome Home ERP!

Can Women Have It All? Have women been buying into a myth for the past 40 years? Or has the next generation simply lost touch with the ideals of feminism? How would gender equality look in a perfect world? We asked Pwani women from a range of backgrounds and family situations to comment.

Bernie You can if you know how to balance. If you have an understanding partner it really helps because it can get hard for mothers. I feel that 90% of Kenyan women don’t have support from their partners but if you believe in yourself, you can do it.

B Bentanora Yes we can! It’s all about planning and being organized.

Alice

Yes , it is possible to have a life at work & at home if only youWelcome can draw a line to Pwani life! between the two. Be a sister/brother to your fellow colleagues while at work and be a mother and wife while at home. When at work , every morning I make a fresh list of all my pending tasks, prioritize them and try as much not to move an urgent work to the next day. This way I do not have to worry about work while at home as I won’t be expecting any problem the next day which means I will have a settled mind and have a great time with my family. ” NEVER CARRY WORK AT HOME IF YOU CAN AVOID IT”

Prisca

Yes, Y s you can have Ye have it all but only at a certain point in life and only for a period of time. What I mean by this is it depends with the age and the phase of life you are in. When you are single, you can have it all. You can fully concentrate on your career and getting good jobs as you do not have any responsibilities at home. But you can only remain single for a period of time and not your whole life. Then once you start having a family, you need to compromise and have a balanced life. This I must say is hard to achieve. Thus, I refer to my initial statement

According to me, ‘having it all’ is all about being happy and content with what I do. Having my own family, with good health, a good place to live in, and good education for the kids, living comfortably, enough savings, that’s what having it all actually is. It’s all relative. Self actualization is what makes me have it all too. I do not consider being employed a necessity for having it all. I want to be self-employed. And to have all this is really hard. It involves a lot of compromising when you are working. Unless you are single, you could try to ‘have it all’. Yes, you can try because you still can’t have it all…single means missing out on family, and that’s not having it all!

Caroline

Lydia To me, having a good education/ qualifications and a good job is ‘hav ing it all’. I don’t put in the family aspect in it. Given the African set up, not ma ny women get to have these opportu nities to study and work. So when you are in that category, I think you can consider yourself having it all.

Lucy

7.

‘Having it all’ ll’ to me means being able to do everything on your own and not depending on anyone else, which is really not possible to accomplish. You always have to have someone to assist you. For instance, when you are at work, you need someone else to take care of your house and family, and when you are at home, you need someone else to provide for you. Now that’s not being independent. ‘Having it all’ involves a lot of sacrifices. For instance, in my case, for the past 8 months I have had a really hard time to balance work, family and my career (studies). I had to skip classes for me to come to work so that I am not physically overworked.

Liz

It’s really hard to say a woman can have it all. Yes, it can be achieved but you must do a lot of sacrifices and sacrificing means letting go of other things. So at the same time, this is not having it all. For instance, you might not want to have a family or have more children because you want to focus on your career. You have to miss out on one thing or the other to achieve something else. So it’s all about compromising and I think as a woman, you can’t have it all. | A PUBLICATION OF PWANI

What Women Want In most households, women have to look after menu planning, grocery shopping and meal preparation besides holding a job, taking care of kids, doing the housework, organizing leisure activities, etc. Leading such a hectic life can cause a few challenges in leading a healthy life such as allocation of time, reaching and maintaining a healthy lifestyle along with incorporating the four food groups in meals. But, guess what??? All ‘Wonder Women’ can meet these challenges with the help of the tips below.

Challenge #1 8. • Preparing quick, healthy meals that the whole family will love is definitely a big challenge! Consider the time devoted to meal planning as an investment in your family’s health. • Plan a week’s worth of menus in advance and you won’t waste time wondering what to make tonight. Consult your spouse and kids for meal ideas they would like. Flip through cookbooks and magazines for new recipes. • Put the menu planner up on the fridge. That way, the first person home in the evening can start supper. • Save time during the week by using the weekend to prepare some foods in large batches that can be thawed or reheated later for a quick supper. • Pasta and egg dishes (omelettes, scrambled eggs) are fast and easy, don’t require a recipe and make delicious use of leftovers (vegetables, cheese). • Try new dishes and have fun with variations. After all, kids learn by example!

Challenge #2 • Avoid diets and focus on making lifelong lifestyle changes to improve your health. Changes should be realistic and gradual. Work 2 to 4 weeks on each change and when it become a habit, move on to the next one. • Focus on fruits and vegetables, whole grain and enriched grain products, fish, and leaner meat and dairy products. • Try new recipes and discover different vegetables. Eat three meals a day and avoid between-meal snacks, unless they’re healthy (yogurt, fruit, raw vegetables). • Get moving, be more active throughout the day.

Challenge #3 • When you draw up the grocery list, make sure to include foods from each of the four groups: fruit and vegetables, grain products, meat and alternatives and dairy products. • Always have ready-to-eat vegetables handy (celery, carrot, sweet pepper) and frozen vegetables in the freezer. That way, you’ll never be caught without! Soup, salad or a glass of vegetable juice makes a tasty first course and ups your vegetable intake. • Keep a bowl of fresh fruit on the table or counter that can be used to turn into delicious breakfast drinks or quick desserts, e.g. yogurt, honey and fruit. • Make dishes that combine several food groups. Good examples are chili, stew and spaghetti with a vegetable rich meat sauce.

Ways To Eat More Kale sukuma wiki

Kale, more commonly known as is one of the healthiest foods you can eat. The leafy green vegetable belongs to the Brassica family, a group of vegetables including cabbage, broccoli , and cauliflower that have gained recent widespread attention due to their health-promoting phytonutrients. Kale is very low in calories (36 calories per cup) and is loaded with vitamins A, C, and K. It’s also a good source of fiber and minerals such as manganese, magnesium, potassium, calcium, and iron.

The problem is, kale isn’t the sexiest veggie in town. If you’re like me, you routinely toss a bunch of it into your grocery basket, but don’t quite know what to do with it once you’re home. Because of its bitter taste and a texture that requires a learned appreciation, kale’s not first on my list of go-to salad ingredients. Luckily, there are countless ways to doctor up this good-for-you, green. Try these five kale recipes and learn how to incorporate it into your next breakfast, lunch, dinner, or snack.
