Artist: Sharon Jones & the Dap-Kings Title: I Learned the Hard Way Catalog #: DAP 019 Release Date: April 6th, 2010 Genre: R&B / Soul
CD: $14.99
LP: $15.99 *Includes coupon for .mp3 download
Sharon Jones & the Dap-Kings are already well known as one of the most exciting acts in the nation for both their explosive live shows and their prolific output of gritty studio recordings. Their breakout release, 100 Days, 100 Nights, sold over 150,000 copies worldwide. This Spring the band will release I Learned the Hard Way, their fourth full-length on Brooklyn’s independent Daptone Records. The record marks a bold step forward for a band who almost singlehandedly stewarded today’s return of soul music to its more traditional sound. Produced by Bosco Mann and recorded on an Ampex eight-track tape machine by Gabriel Roth in Daptone Records’ House of Soul studios, the record drips with a warmth and spontaneity rarely found since the golden days of Muscle Shoals and Stax. Sharon’s raw power, rhythmic swagger, moaning soulfulness, and melodic command set her firmly alongside Tina Turner, James Brown, Mavis Staples, and Aretha as a fixture in the canon of soul music. From the lush Philly-Soul fanfare that ushers in “The Game Gets Old” at the top of the record, to the stripped down Sam Cooke-style “Mama Don’t Like My Man” at the tail, the Dap-Kings dance seamlessly through both the most crafted and simple arrangements with subtlety and discipline. I Learned the Hard Way is the “Daptone Sound” at its finest.

Javelin throw a party that sees nothing wrong with dropping crooked disco (“On It On It”), schoolyard funk (“Intervales Theme”), abstract R&B (“Dep”) and pitch-perfect pop (“Mossy Woodland”) in the same set. At least that’s the way things unfold on Javelin’s debut album, No Más, the eagerly-awaited follow-up to a self-released collection of demos (“Jamz n Jemz”) and a pair of limited Thrill Jockey 12-inches (“Javelin”, “Number Two”). It’s as if Javelin were programmed to reproduce the golden age of every genre known to man, bouncing between samplers and strings, drum machines and drum sets, and a growing collection of guitars, horns and homemade thumb pianos. You read that right: Most of No Más’ dusty 45 moments aren’t lifted from actual record crates. They’re painstakingly recreated, note by note, from the jukebox in Javelin’s collective mind. So if you’re trying to ‘figure Javelin out’, don’t bother. You see, everything has its place in a Javelin song, from the shimmering keys and brassy strut of “Shadow Heart” to the loony tune loops of “Oh! Centra.” These musical omnivores work their music like a rabid radio dial, leaving a tricky trail of sonic breadcrumbs in their wake. Or as Langford puts it, “The minute I start working in one style, I get distracted and want to work on another one. We kinda gave up on finding our ’sound’ years ago.”

Overview:
Elliott Smith has been a patron saint of the indie scene since his days helming Portland heroes Heatmiser. As a solo artist, Smith led a revolution of home fourtrackers, from Beck to Cat Power, out of the bedroom and into the studio, where Smithʼs fondness for Beatlesque melody led to some of the most beautifully orchestrated pop of the last decade. from a basement on the hill is Smithʼs final recording and finds Smith returning to an edgier, guitar-driven sound, alongside his trademark heart-rending balladry. From a Basement on the Hill was released on October 19, 2004 on ANTIRecords. Elliott had been working on the record at the time of his death. Elliottʼs family hired producer Rob Schanpf (Either/Or, XO, Figure 8) and Joanna Bolme to mix and produce the album.
Press Quotes:
l
“Itʼs simply wonderful - bristling with pop masterpieces large and small, and reassuringly unburdened by Smithʼs deep-seated malaise.” - Splendid Magazine, 10/19/04 “Large and epic, but tense and claustrophobic as well, and gratefully, itʼs as close to Elliott as weʼve ever been.” - Filter Magazine, 9/4/04 “The low-fi yet meticulous arrangements only add to the sense of isolation and the poignancy of the songs.” - The New York Times, 10/18/04 “Lyrically it is rich featuring nuanced double entendres, powerful alliteration and captivating storytelling.” - PopMatters, 10/15/04

Overview:

Roman Candle had quite an impact on Slim Moon, Kill Rock Stars' founder: "In 1994, I had been asked to be on this five-person solo-act tour called Pop Chord with Tammy Watson, Carrie Akre, Sean Croghan and Elliott Smith. The first night at the Crocodile in Seattle, I didn't pay too much attention and people talked all thru Elliott's set. Sean Croghan got up next and said "all of you people who just talked through Elliott's set are bummed because you just missed something very, very special." The next night of the tour, at The Bottom Of The Hill in San Francisco, I listened very closely to Elliott's set, and it was basically one of those lifechanging moments. Instead of watching the rest of the performers, I went out to the tour van and popped Roman Candle into the player, and listened to it on endless repeat for the rest of the evening and beyond. It completely blew my mind. I have never heard music as heartwrenchingly, gut-checkingly honest, intimate, and wise - before or since."
Press Quotes:
l
“Roman Candle is a bright spark, one that has not diminished since its release or the loss of its author.” -Treble Zine, 10/17/04 “In these songs that are full of life, sincerity, and a calm energy, Smith is able to communicate his message effectively with just his guitar and voice.” - You Could Do Worse Zine “A fantastic collection of heartfelt acoustic based lullabies.” - Sputnik Music, 6/12/05

John Grant
Queen of Denmark National Release Date: CD: 04/06/2010 Denver Colorado’s John Grant is as talented as he is cynical. “We just had so much hatred for each other that we couldn’t carry on,” says Grant of his relationship with his former band members in The Czars. Vitriol like that can go one of only two ways, and for a while, it looked like it wasn’t going to end well for Grant. “I spent about a year thinking I must kill myself.” But in the end that vitriol, spawned by growing up gay in stifling small American towns, ended up as artistic fuel - thanks to acclaimed Texas rockers Midlake. The band befriended Grant and invited him into their studio, acting as his backing band, where they recorded and produced Queen of Denmark, his solo debut. ‘What those guys did for me, I can’t thank them enough.” Recalling the halcyon days of 70s AM gold, Queen RETAIL of Denmark is partly the product of a pension for his parents’ 8-tracks. With over 20 dates opening for Midlake, we will focus all co-op “They had Supertramp, John Denver, Journey and Abba,” says Grant, around those tour markets to ensure there is good coverage at retail though his own music leans more toward Harry Nilsson, Scott Walker and accounts in those markets. And as the Midlake project continues Randy Newman. His personal tastes aside, what’s for sure is that his is a to build we’ll look for strong accounts that would do well with this significant new songwriting voice. Bubbling with lyrical frankness and stillrelease. In-store play copies and posters are available: contact raw emotional wounds, you’ll find Queen of Denmark’s melodies soothing your sales rep or mike@yeproc.com. at the same time its lyrics burrow down to that one remaining exposed RADIO nerve - bending and plucking it like an E string. We will primarily target the Midlake supporters and push the programmers there about the connection John has with the band. We will target non-commercial AAA and College radio and also release it digitally to commercial and Alt. Specialty radio. We will primarily be targeting efforts around tour dates for in-studio opportunities to maximize the impact there.

Artist: Nice Nice Title: Extra Wow 04.06.10
Overview
WARPCD187/WARPLP187
Nice Nice are from Portland, Oregon. Jason Buehler and Mark Shirazi have been using their guitars, drums, voices, electronics and lots of other stuff to create their “post-everything modern music” for nearly a decade. By playing countless kinetic live shows around the US, they’ve honed their unorthodox craft. Beholding the sonic leviathan that is a Nice Nice live experience can leave an observer dazed. They build complex loops in real time, constructing, sculpting, bending and fragmenting their songs without warning - a process that ensures consistently unique performances and potentially thrilling mistakes. Not only engaging for the audience, the band exhibit a very specific link to each other, having developed near-telepathic abilities allowing them to anticipate each other’s next action at any moment. Extra Wow is an extremely apt title for an album that presents itself as a constantly unfolding collection of kaleidoscopic musical sediments. Each song effectively builds on the one before it to create the effect of an album-length crescendo that encompasses everything from forward-reaching psychedelia and neo-primitive electronic experiments to dub rhythms and learned lessons from the pillars of krautrock. From the acid-punk opening of “One Hit” it’s apparent that establishing your equilibrium within the world of Nice Nice will not be easy. With precision motorik propulsion and synesthesistic textures, tracks like “Everything Falling Apart” and “A Vibration” drive Extra Wow along at a pace that demands a commitment from the listener. A rewarding and mindbending journey, this album should be the first step in building a legion of fans for these future heroes.

RELEASE DATE : 4/6/10
Big Red and Barbacoa is the second album by South Texas' Hacienda, and like its predecessor Loud Is The Night (Alive 2008), it has been produced at the Akron Analog Studio by Dan Auerbach of the Black Keys. Recorded on the tail end of a year of playing at clubs and festivals across North America, Australia, and Europe, opening for Dan Auerbach and Dr. Dog, this new album brings heavier grooves and flavor to the '60s harmonies sound the band is known for. The result is a blend of Tex-Mex roots rock, retro-pop and R&B that can only be described as South Texas Soul. Big Red and Barbacoa captures the attitude of a band ready to throw pretension to the roadside and play rock'n'roll the way it was intended. "It's music that makes a person want to move their hips in bizarre and new ways, though there's no cognizant recognition that any of it is happening, just the spontaneous movement that springs from the ears comprehending what Hacienda is bringing to the table. It's a home-cooked meal. It's getting into a bit of a scrap. It's wearing tight blue jeans and it's smoking hand-rolled cigs. It's a dirty and raw version of all of the amazing things that Buddy Holly, Ritchie Valens and Elvis Presley presented when they were walking and singing. It's all that you can ask for in music that needs to be felt, more than described, that needs to be witnessed to appreciate. It's all inside - a direct reflection of the heart shining like it means it, the feet jittering as if they're out of control and the sweat glands getting a workout." -- Sean Moller/Daytrotter

GENRE : POP FILE UNDER: “T” Tunng
Release Date: April 6, 2010 Tunng: always different, always the same. Tunng’s new album, ...And Then We Saw Land, is a record that is dramatically different to any of their previous three, but still very much the same. It’s got a new lyricist and a new lead vocalist. It’s got drums. It’s got synthesizers. It’s got massed sing-a-long choruses. It’s got guitar solos. And rather noticeably it hasn’t got singer, songwriter and Tunng founder Sam Genders (whose other project The Accidental released There Were Wolves in 2008). And yet, and yet... this is the exact same group of people who took the stage for Tunng’s first ever show. Very different, but very much the same. Tunng began as an inter-city experiment with friends drifting in and out of the studio, and has progressed from an emerging and exciting new voice, a new take on British folk music, to the forefront of their musical community. Since last we saw them, the band have been on adventures both personal and shared, including a voyage of discovery with Malian desert bluesmen Tinariwen, a unique collaboration that aimed to fuse the sounds of these two singularly unique bands together. The project began as a single recording session for the BBC radio program Late Junction (the same program which also recently invited Tortoise to record a session with Wire’s Colin Newman), then led to a shared tour, all of which helped shape Tunng’s approach to the new album. In the spirit of all that travel and experimentation, they decided to call their new album ...And Then We Saw Land, and it’s full of adventurous spirit. Three songs contain what the band describe as The Mega Chorus, a 15-strong group of collaborators and drinking buddies who lent their voices to the album one rainy night in an abandoned school hall in Old Street. The intimacy and domesticity of previous songs is replaced by a grand sweep, a feeling of a wide world being explored and alien experiences being processed and drawn into the band’s lives. And yet it’s still Tunng, still with that bucolic oddness and modernist gleam that made those very first basement recordings so intriguing seven long, strange years ago. They were different then, and they remain very different now; still different, but still the same. That’s Tunng.

Mi Ami Steal Your Face Thrill - 237
Mi Ami is committed to their own particular joyful noise, to the intersection of vicious high-energy playing with ebullient communal experience. In this climate, when pretty much every band has some dub records at home and a myriad of musical influences have been rendered mundane, Mi Ami defines itself by turning inward. Twelve weeks of touring in 2009, including an extensive two months traveling the US with Thank You, Lexie Mountain Boys and others in support of the 2009 Watersports LP, transformed Mi Ami from what friends described as a “fun time party band” into a lean, tight, neartelepathic unit, which remains fun. The relentless playing of the past spring, from California to Latvia and back, took the band to newfound depths of nuanced, pre-verbal communication and opened up new neural pathways where creativity had previously been kept from flowing. Upon returning home, confident in their abilities, Mi Ami set out to write the bulk of Steal Your Face. The music was recorded once again by Phil Manley (Trans Am) at Lucky Cat Studios. The album is far and away Mi Ami’s finest sounding, and the one which is most aligned with their live show. The definitive element of Mi Ami’s stage sound has always been the juxtaposition of Daniel Martin-McCormick’s jagged guitar and shrieking vocals with Jacob Long’s mammoth bass, and Damon Palermo’s strong percussive presence and Steal Your Face captures and amplifies those tones to the max. Each track was approached with unique sonic characteristics in mind, from the claustrophobic mind-scape of “Harmonics (Genius of Love)” to the fading light of “Dreamers” to the sharp, lacerating tone of “Latin Lover” to the avant boogie of album closer “Slow.” Where before, melodies had been suggested, here they are fully developed. Where structure had previously meandered, here each song uses a minimum of means to “get to there,” allowing the playing to fly free. And, where lyrics had been left unprinted, here they are laid out completely, an integral part of the music. Technically, there are four components to Mi Ami’s music: Drums, Bass, Guitar and Vocals. And yet, essentially there is only one: the unified sound, more than the sum of its parts, each individual component coming from and returning to the singular whole. Anyone interested in understanding what Mi Ami is about would do well to start with this album. More concise than Watersports more confident than their other pre-Thrill Jockey releases and better sounding than anything else they have done, Steal Your Face marks their arrival as a fully-formed, organically mature band.

NEW RELEASES FOR 6th APRIL 2010
IKONIKA— Contact , Want , Love , Hate
FORMAT - CD LABEL - Hyperdub UPC - 5055300314994 CATALOG # - HDBCD004 LIST PRICE - $15.99 After a string of 12s on Hyperdub over the last couple of years starting with the now classic 'Please' in 2008, 'Contact, Want, Love, Have' is the debut album from Sara AbdelHamid a.k.a Ikonika. „Contact, Want, Love, Have‟ doesn‟t mess around or waste a note as she colours in and then discards the rulebook. Maybe it‟s her background as a drummer in a post hardcore band, her love of r 'n' b and hip hop that bring in that extra that makes her music stand out from the legions. Or maybe its just her ear for a odd melody. While on the face of it the album seems to traverse a number of retro-futurist styles, including dubstep, uk funky and garage, 80s synth pop and computer game soundtracks, it re-mains totally contemporary, coherent and focused, making the idea of restraining her to a single genre irrelevant.

“You’ve got the blues ‘cause you really ain’t got no soul” - Finger “Vessel” FINGER was a guitar-driven rock band from Raleigh, NC active in the first half of the 90’s evoking the musical styles and inspiration of The Rolling Stones, Neil Young & Crazy Horse, Johnny Thunders, and The Dream Syndicate. Well-crafted and catchy, their songs were built on the melodic guitar interplay between Ricky Hicks and Brad Rice as the two also alternated lead vocals. The band also benefitted from backing and occasionally lead vocals from drummer John Howie who, with Jon Singletary on bass, provided a solid foundation for their no-nonsense, unpretentious rock and roll. FINGER’s first 7” single “Everywhere” b/w “The Awful Truth” (which both appear here) was one of Merge Records earliest releases (MRG012) and was recently garnered one of their best by Ryan Adam’s in his forward to the novel “Our Noise: The Story of Merge Records” celebrating the label’s 20th Anniversary. Throughout the early 90’s FINGER gained some additional exposure and recognition with regular shows along the East coast and Midwest including support spots for Nirvana, Dinosaur Jr, Soul Asylum, Uncle Tupelo, My Bloody Valentine, Buffalo Tom, Lemonheads, Bash & Pop, among others. Howie left the band in 1992, and although the band continued to play and record regularly with various drummers, they never recovered from the loss of momentum. Shortly thereafter the remaining three original members decided to pursue other projects and interests. Howie went on to form alt-country heros The Two Dollar Pistols which helped launch the career of Tift Merritt. Rice has gone on to play guitar with the who’s who of Americana music for last 15 years including: Whiskeytown, Ryan Adams, Tift Merritt, The Backsliders and is the current full-time guitarist with country-pop star Keith Urban. Make no mistake however, FINGER is rock and roll, unabashed and unafraid that would make Johnny Thunders proud.
