TAPES ‘N TAPES Outside
1/11/11
Tapes ‘n Tapes is set to release their new album – Outside – through their own label, ibid records, the original home to the bandʼs breakthrough album, The Loon. Outside was recorded at The Terrarium in their hometown of Minneapolis by their long time sound engineer, Drew Malamud. After recording for two weeks, they handed the record off to Peter Katis (Interpol, The National) to lend his signature sound to the mix. The result is twelve songs that are playful and melodic, while also capturing the essence and energy of their live show. Outside sounds refined and lush, letting the memorable melodies shine. The songs are more straightforward allowing each memberʼs personality to emerge. Outside is the perfect mix of their previous works, with a whole new clarity of sound. The first single, “Freak Out,” is a fast-paced romp with a shout-along chorus that is sure to delight fans both new and old. The albumʼs opener, “Badaboom,” showcases longing vocals with a driving rhythm that propels the song into an epic rock breakdown. “Nightfallʼs” seemingly disparate parts are woven together into a beautifully strange break-up ballad. The haunting horns and sparse guitars unite for one of Tapes ʻn Tapes biggest songs yet. “One In The World” is a danceable, jangly number about a search for love that takes you around the globe. The twelve songs on Outside are unified by themes of longing and loneliness, and the journey of finding and losing love. There is a newfound space in Tapes ʻn Tapes sound that is both intimate and distant at the same time. Combine that with a pervasive sense of joy throughout the whole record and what you hear is a band making music that they truly love.

EDIE BRICKELL S/T
STREETDATE: 01.11.10 Celebrated songwriter and musician Edie Brickell will release two new albums this January on her own independent label, racecarLOTTA Records. The first, Edie Brickell, is out January 11 and The Gaddabouts will follow on January 25. Coinciding with these releases, Brickell will perform a special show with Iron & Wine on January 29 at Radio City Music Hall. Additionally, The Gaddabouts will make their live debut at Carnegie’s Zankel Hall as part of the WFUV concert series on April 8. Produced by Charlie Sexton, Brickell began writing her self-titled solo album during her 2003 tour in support of Volcano. The solo record was then put hold to focus on The Gaddabouts, a new project featuring Steve Gadd, Pino Palladino and Andy Fairweather-Low. The group’s forthcoming debut is composed of material written by Brickell over the past decade as well as songs written with the band in the studio the very day of recording. Both conceived of and developed throughout the past decade, the two resulting projects were only coincidently finished at the same time. Of the synchronicity, Brickell notes, “it’s like a horse race; both projects are kicking in the stall and I gotta let ‘em run.”

TALEDRAGGER
LTD. BLUE VINYL PRESSING
700 COPIES
Recorded during a 14 show US tour this year, the groove on this new studio album is pure T-Model Ford. Backed by his regular touring band GravelRoad, and with stellar guest appearances by Brian Olive and Matthew Smith, “Taledragger’ is a perfect party album with the feel and honesty of a night at the juke joint. T-Model Ford plays with an intensity and consistency that belies his age, despite a mild stroke in April 2010. Now 90 years old, the self proclaimed “Boss of the Blues” continues to show his strengths. Playing the blues is his life, he knows no other way. The well-documented Bad Man can be noted to, at times, simply have it bad, man. “This is no music for the precious and wanky-fedora-headed-claptonite-bloozers who whine about sht being out of tune and wring their hands over a guitar being japanese-made. This is primal jankety-ass rattlin’ and buzzin’ raw music.” -- Deep Blues blog

This CD is an exciting landmark album for me. Dedicated to loved ones lost, who will always be a part of me, it’s my first CD with 100% original music and features many musicians whom I've known and admired over the years. In addition to some of the Washington D.C. areas best musicians whom I've been recording and performing with for years: STEVE WOLF, TOMMY LEPSON, JOSH HOWELL and JAY TURNER, there are some really great world renowned musicians who have contributed to this album. CHUCK LEAVELL who plays keyboards with The Rolling Stones and Eric Clapton has been involved in a few of my CDs in the past and he's one of the first people I thought of when planning this CD. BRIAN AUGER and I have played together occasionally over the last few years in a group called The January Allstars with Catfish Hodge, and Brian is just about the best Hammond organ and keyboard player I know of. WAYNE JACKSON, trumpet player with the legendary Memphis Horns and I got play together briefly in Memphis quite a few years ago and I have always admired his playing and work--his playing is on an impressive number of classic soul & blues records by guys like Otis Redding, Albert King, Al Green and many more. It was also a real treat and honor playing with WILLIE WEEKS who is currently bassist for Eric Clapton. The session Willie appears on was arranged by a mutual friend drummer JIM BROCK who is a fantastic drummer, percussionist and hand drum player. Willie has been an in-demand session bassist for decades and his playing appears on a lot of my all time favorite recordings. And finally, after knowing SONNY LANDRETH and admiring his talents ever since I recorded his song "Congo Square" back in 1987, I'm so pleased he contributed an absolutely burning guitar solo to the CD's opening track "Don't Wanna Do It". The disc is produced by myself and Bob Dawson. Most of the CD was recorded at Bias Studios in Springfield,VA. Many other tracks were recorded where guests lived---Sonny Landreth in Breaux Bridge, LA, Chuck Leavell in Macon, GA, Brian Auger in California. I drove down to Charlotte, NC to record live with Willie Weeks and Jim Brock. The album cover is adorned with old family photos - My late father was a professional photographer and my childhood is well documented by him with some wonderful pictures which I've chosen to help illustrate the title. These songs are some of my most personal statements yet.. I hope you enjoy it! Tom Principato

At a time when back catalogue outsells fresh creativity and newcomers achieve fame by adding a lick of paint to their parents’ record collections, it’s unusual to find a band who, despite plying their trade for decades, are willing and able to make new work that’s as vital and relevant as their own illustrious past recordings. Wire are such a band, and with ‘Red Barked Tree’ they have succeeded in making a statement that will sound as strong in 30 years as their celebrated historical oeuvre does today. ‘Red Barked Tree’ rekindles a lyricism sometimes absent from Wire’s previous work and reconnects with the live energy of performance, harnessed and channelled from extensive touring over the past few years. ‘Red Barked Tree’ was conceived, written and recorded mostly during 2010 by the pared-down lineup of Colin Newman, Graham Lewis and Robert Grey -- with no guests. Ranging from the hymnal ‘Adapt’ to the barking sledgehammer art-punk of ‘Two Minutes’, the album encompasses the full range of style and nuance that has always endeared Wire to pastel-tinged pop aficionados and bleeding-edge avantrockers alike. Whatever Wire make is Wire music: this is the band’s enigmatic guiding axiom. While Wire remain agnostic about the nature and identity of their aesthetic essence, it’s always been instantly recognisable, manifesting itself throughout their heterogeneous work. This enigma waits be revealed among the ‘Red Barked Trees’ … In 2011, to support the album alongside a full media campaign, Wire will be touring in Australia and New Zealand (January), Europe (February and March) and USA and Canada (April), with festival appearances through the summer. Further European, Asiatic and American adventures are planned through to the end of 2011 and well into 2012. TRACK LIST : 01. Please Take 02. Now Was 03. Adapt 04. Two Minutes 05. Clay 06. Swarming hymns of 2nd generation psychedelic pop mastery, The Soft Boys' two most influential and groundbreaking albums are finally back in print via Yep Roc Records. Main man Robyn Hitchcock, along with demon guitarist Kimberley Rew, bassist Matthew Seligman and drummer Morris Windsor manage to bottle '60s guitar pop, shake it up with caged teenage fury and cut it all with a healthy dose of lyrical levity. A Can of Bees and Underwater Moonlight -- seen as fatally un-hip when originally released – would go on to be seen as seminal albums and become catalysts for ‘80s jangle pop and college rock, directly inspiring band’s like R.E.M. and The Flaming Lips.

GOLD MOTEL is releasing their debut full-length, Summer House, on their own imprint, Good as Gold Records. The Chicago-based quintet originated in the warmer climate of Los Angeles during the summer of 2009. Greta Morgan (The Hush Sound) returned from a year in Southern California to her hometown of Chicago, bringing with her what would become the five-song GOLD MOTEL EP. Collaborating with her friend Dan Duzsynzski (This Is Me Smiling), recording began on a set of sharp, sunny pop songs with a decidedly West Coast outlook. Working with Duzsynski, Morgan realized that her pre-conceived solo project could grow into a full band effort.
STREET DATE: 1/11/11 (vinyl)
Through the fall of 2009, GOLD MOTEL transformed into a full-fledged band, adding Chicago music veterans Matt “Minx” Schuessler, Adam Kaltenhauser (both of This is Me Smiling), and Eric Hehr (The Yearbooks). The super group played together live for the first time in December of 2009 with a sold out headlining debut at Chicago’s Beat Kitchen, coinciding with the release of the GOLD MOTEL EP. Since then, GOLD MOTEL has headlined shows from Los Angeles to New York (and most cities in between) in support of Summer House. In November 2010, they will release a two-song 7 inch vinyl, Talking Fiction. You can hear GOLD MOTEL songs in ads for US Bank, Kohl’s, Crayola and many more. Highlights: • Press handled by Stunt Company • Reviews in Alternative Press, Venus and more • Songs featured in US Bank, Kohl’s and Crayola ads • Radio promotion by Terrorbird Media, already charted on CMJ • Shows with fun., Steel Train, Kate Nash, Hedley, Motion City Soundtrack, Minus the Bear and more Tour: 11/20: Vaudeville Mews – Des Moines, IA 11/27: Subterranean – Chicago, IL 12/18: First Entry/7th Ave – Minneapolis, MN (Popsickle Fest) 12/26: Metro – Chicago, IL (THE HUSH SOUND/THIS IS ME SMILING SHOW) 1/20: Grog Shop – Cleveland, OH 1/22: Firebird – St. Louis, MO With a tour to SXSW and many more dates to come!

Mr. Oizo 'Moustache (Half A Scissor)' Street Date: 01/11/10 2LP • BF012• $19.99
Label: Brainfeeder File Under: Electronic Export: No Export Box Lot: 12 2LP Packaging: Vinyl sleeve with 3mm spine
Five years after the 2000 debut album of Mr Oizo, “Analog Worms Attack,” featuring a tune featured in an advert featuring a lemon-coloured creature¬ who drives a car and bobs his cute ol’ head Mr Oizo returned with his second album, “Moustache (Half A Scissor)”. Quentin Dupieux, who allegedly got his first recording deal after his dad sold Laurent Garnier a car, had spent the intervening period throwing out all his analog gear and learning to chop, programme and explode beats and music on computers. The result was an album of such aggressively funny and brilliant programming that most of the millions of people who had got into the yellow thing ran around screaming and bumping into each other until they cried and fell over. It was heard, though, by aficionados including a young man in LA by the name of Steve Ellison. Steve is now better known as Flying Lotus and his label, Brainfeeder is re-releasing “Moustache” in an edition of 1000 vinyl copies. It’s a thing of amazing, demented beauty which Ellison felt deserved to be heard again and reassessed. “The original label that put it out thought it was unlistenable at the time, they didn't quite believe in it, but it was way ahead of its time. It’s an honour for Brainfeeder to re-release this record, it's one of the most inspiring electronic records ever made.” As for Dupieux himself, a successful film-maker as well as a musician, what does he make of it? “I think 76% of this record is very inspired,” he explains. “The rest is terrible and not really interesting.” He pauses and thinks this through “But hey, 76% is a good score.”

NEW RELEASES FOR 11th JANUARY 2011
DARKSTAR — Gold / Gold [ John Roberts Mix ]
FORMAT - 12” LABEL - Hyperdub UPC - 5055300320643 CATALOG # - HDB043 LIST PRICE - $11.99 ‘Gold’ is the new single from Darkstar’s highly anticipated debut album ‘North’. In contrast to last year’s very popular ‘Aidy’s Girl Is A Computer’ 12”, ‘Gold’ is indicative of Darkstar’s current direction as a three piece group. The single is an inspired cover of ‘You Remind Me Of Gold’, a Human League b-side from 1983, prompted when the band heard the original 45rpm record played at 33rpm. Rich piano lines, elegant synths and gauzy micro-rhythms accompany lead singer James But-tery’s languid, computer-processed vocals, to create a poised and quietly epic song that will stay with the listener for ages to come. On the flip side, up and coming Berlin-based producer John Roberts, known for his out-put on Dials, creates a track that recalls classic early house, twisting the piano figure into energetic shapes over a deep melodic bass-line, somehow keeping the softness and atmosphere of the original locked into the mix.
THE STOOGES - A Thousand Lights: Live In 1970
FORMAT - CD LABEL - Easy Action UPC - 5060174950728 CATALOG # - EARS034 LIST PRICE - $21.99 The Stooges gained a reputation for their wild, primitive live performances. Pop, especially, won fame for his outrageous onstage behaviour—smearing his bare chest with hamburger meat and peanut but-ter, cutting himself with shards of glass, and flashing his genitalia to the audience. These are probably the only currently known live recordings of the Stooges from the 1970 shows. De-luxe long box packaging with stunning unseen photos of the band shot by Fan Club girl Natalie Stooge-ling on the road in 1970. Tracklist New York (Unknown) 1.Dirt 2.1970 (Chicago 18th July) 3. THE WILDHEARTS - Chutzpah!
FORMAT - CD LABEL - Backstage Alliance UPC - 6430013784033 CATALOG # - BSACD027 LIST PRICE - $15.99 For almost 2 decades The Wildheart‟s have remained at the forefront of the British rock scene. From their clas-sic debut album „Earth vs‟ (voted number one album of the year in Kerrang! Back in 1993, and number 20 in the best rock albums of all time in a Kerrang! Special in 2006), through to 2007‟s self titled record their creative output and legendary live shows have been second to none. Although the 90‟s saw the band covered like a living soap opera in the press with tales of sex, drugs, bust ups, fights (both with labels and themselves), splits, more drugs and a lot more controversy (one such incident including entering and then proceeding to trash the Kerrang! offices), the last 2 years have seen the band more fo-cused than ever before and firing on all cylinders.

Scores of musicians have cited them as one of their favourite bands and key influences, yet neither en-joyed any real success during their existence. The Deviants released three albums between 1967 and 1969, before evolving into the Pink Fairies, who also released three albums between 1971 and 1973, the latter featuring Larry Wallis as front man.Rich Deakin, author of Keep It Together!
SHRAG - Life! Death! Prizes!
FORMAT - LP LABEL - Where Its At Is Where You Are UPC - 5023903 261557 CATALOG # - WIALP022 LIST PRICE - $21.99 SHRAG are "bringing analytical attitude to the debased trade of pop and serving it up with bulldozing portions of raw guitar noise" MARVELLOUS Formed by five friends in Brighton back in 2004, Shrag have come a long way from their DIY roots to flourish into a proper indie pop band to be reckoned with.. With an exhilarating blend of dirty, distorted postpunk guitars, shouty boy/girl vocals and fantastic pop songs, Shrag bring us a distinctively British experience, drawing inspiration from the likes of The Au Pairs, B-52s and Prolapse. Whilst their songs have a certain melodic bounce, this belies a darker under-belly, with a wry intelligence, and references to surrealist film, literature and pop culture. the forthcoming album for a number of months and building huge anticipation for Life!
