Outkast, Danny Brown, Chance the Rapper Nnamdi Ogbonnaya is a multi-instrumentalist composer, producer, and performer. His musical identity was forged in the DIY community of Chicago. Relentless participation in numerous musical projects bridged genres and created inroads between scenes. His ubiquitous presence was satirized by a 2016 quote from Into It. Over It.’s Evan Weiss in the Red Eye Chicago: “If Chicago music had elected offices, Ogbonnaya probably would be mayor.” Constant participation at the local level quickly opened channels to a broad cross-section of the arts world. Nnamdi toured the USA and Canada with projects ranging from punk to jazz. He played the basements of Mexico and Europe in his hardcore band, Itto. His jazz-fusion project Monobody opened Tortoise on one of Chicago’s premiere stages. A full accounting of his musical activity over the last 6 eight years includes approximately 15 bands and dozens of tours.

Digging A Tunnel is an album that constantly bucks trends and confounds expectations. Traveling as widely as Wästberg has -- and filtered through a love for hip-hop -- the album is as unrestrained and spirited as the music that inspired it. Wästberg explains, “Moondog, Bob Hund, My Bloody Valentine, D’Angelo, J Dilla, Thomas Mapfuno. Liturgy, Dudley Perkins, Sly and the Family Stone, Mahavishnu Orchestra… I don’t know. I listen to a lot of stuff!” sir Was played almost all the instruments on his debut, including drums, bass, keyboards, guitar, percussion, clarinets, and saxophone. “Everything except the bagpipe and the harmonica... Those I captured with my iPhone,” says Wästberg. Much of the debut album was recorded between Autumn 2014 and Spring 2015 in Wästberg’s favored Gothenburg studio space, Stampen, but the record is lent its especially singular atmosphere by the background noises the producer employs, many from field recordings he compiled during his travels, whether maracas in Mexico or flutes from another distant land. It boasts, too, an effortless flow, reflected in Wästberg’s vocal delivery, which shifts from falsetto to a lazy spoken word delivery that circles round the beat rather than landing on it. This transliteration was the starting point for Marc Collin and Olivier Libaux’s unique project, which, by appropriating the punk and post-punk cannon and running it through the Bossa Nova filter, reinvented the cover band genre, revealing new and brilliant talents along the way: Camille, Phoebe Killdeer (whose Fade Out Lines was remixed by The Avener,) Nadeah, Mélanie Pain, and, soon, Liset Alea. The gambit paid off, with sales of over one million records over four albums released between 2004 and 2010, and world tours that included stops at venues such as London’s Royal Albert Hall, L.A.’s Hollywood Bowl and Paris’ Olympia. Since 2011, Nouvelle Vague had stopped recording, focusing on an innovative live show created in collaboration with the mythical Jean-Charles de Castelbajac (Ceremony and Dawn of innocence,) and branching out into different projects: Olivier’s Uncovered Queen of the Stone Age, and Marc’s Bristol, along with his Kwaidan label. The time seems right to write a new chapter in the Nouvelle Vague saga: with a new album “I Could Be Happy” and live show, the band and its coterie of female vocalists continue their time travels with a renewed alegria. Nouvelle vague by Nouvelle Vague and Some Friends is thus more of a nexus of forthcoming projects: a new album comprised of punk and post punk standards imbued with the inimitable Nouvelle Vague touch, and, for the first time, a bevy of surprising Collin/Libaux which prove that the two producers are more than prodigious arrangers. This album is also the opportunity to gather again the pioneer singers of Nouvelle Vague: Élodie Frégé, Mélanie Pain, Liset Alea, Nadeah and to find other guests as Camille or Clara Luciani. A worldwide tour is already confirmed and announced. It will begin in Europe and Asia, in the fall, and will continue through South America and the U.S.A. in the new year, and feature the entire crew on stage, around Marc and Olivier: Mélanie Pain, Élodie Frégé, and Liset Alea.

The tale of Daughters is not over yet. The mythology that surrounds the band is again being expanded as they careen towards some unknown future. But their refusal to stay buried reminds us of the first real trauma the band inflicted on the musical landscape: the 2006 release of Hell Songs. While they utterly baffled listeners with Canada Songs, the spastic, blunt screamo the Rhode Islanders blasted through on that breakneck debut turned out to only be a warning of how subversive, innovative, and unrepentant they could be. The opening of Hell Songs immediately became an iconic moment: Frontman Alexis Marshall crooning, “I’ve been called a sinner,” like a fire and brimstone preacher with a flask of rotgut hidden in his Bible. And over the course of roughly 23 minutes, Marshall’s vocals squirm, howl and rant over a storm of songs that eschew a traditional sense of pretty much everything. At times aurally nauseating, the guitars are piercing, anti-riffs that skitter and squeal around each other in demented patterns. And pulling them together is some of the most inventive drumming in extreme music -- deconstructed, shambolic rhythms played with a virtuosic precision. It would be almost impenetrable if the songs weren’t so bizarrely anthemic and obscenely addictive. We have to wait and see what’s next for Daughters but right now, fuck the future. Hell Songs is a landmark album, dynamic and unyielding, and still stands today as a revolution.

THIS DREAM OF LIFE, Kath Bloom’s 19th album, was recorded over the last 5 winters in Los Angeles with friends. In true method fashion Kath slept in the studio that the recording took place. The album features guests Avi Buffalo, Imaad Wasif and Mark Kozelek. Kath began playing music in a graveyard with Loren Connors in the 1980s and it took nearly 40 years for her to cultivate the passion to perform that she currently revels in. Kath’s song ‘Come Here’ was featured in BEFORE SUNRISE (1995) and Bill Callahan’s cover of ‘The breeze/ My Baby Cries’ was in Paolo Sorrentino’s YOUTH (2015). Kath’s songs have been covered by Devendra Banhart, Mick Turner of Dirty Three, Mark Kozelek, and Meg Baird, among others. About Picking up where they left off on the 2007 compilation 'Lost & Found – Rockabilly & Jump Blues', Keb Darge & Cut Chemist join forces once again, this time to explore the wonderful world of 1960s Garage music. While Rockabilly could be defined as a DIY emulation of the music of Buddy Holly, Eddie Cochran and others by young American artists, Garage was heavily influenced by British bands of the day like the Beatles, Kinks & Rolling Stones. Simple drum kits, guitars and the occasional organ keep the sound honest and raw, retaining a palpable sense of excitement even to this day. With a multitude of bands springing up all over the USA, many of these wonderful records were released in tiny numbers, making certain titles almost impossible to find. Keb Darge’s love affair with this intriguing genre happened almost by accident, while on the hunt for obscure Northern Soul records. Street Date: 3/10/2017 ZEN240 | ZENCD240 Nathan Fake will release his fourth album “Providence” - his most personal and profoundly emotional work to date - via Ninja Tune on 10th March 2017. Crafted in the wake of a crippling two year spell of creative stagnation during which he was unable to compose any music at all, the esteemed British producer describes the record “as a massive step up both in my career and in my life in general… it felt like I’d come alive again”. “Providence” also sees the British producer collaborate with vocalists for the first time, with none other than Prurient (aka Vatican Shadow / founder of Hospital Productions) and Raphaelle from Braids. Both arose from chance meetings in Geneva and Osaka as their tour schedules crossed. Emerging from this extended period of creative stagnation with renewed vigour and lust for life, “Providence” was recorded during the first six months of 2016 in Nathan’s home studio / living room. The meaning behind the title is two-pronged: on the one hand it’s a nod to the aforementioned Korg Prophecy synth that features so heavily on the record. But on a deeper level it means “guidance or divine guidance” - not necessarily in a religious sense but more to be guided by a higher power - or more specifically to Nathan, music as therapy and a path out of a dark period in his life.

Fink’s Sunday Night Blues Club, Vol. 1 is the latest musical output from Fin Greenall, recorded at his studio in Berlin following 2014’s long player 'Hard Believer' and prior to embarking on the eagerly anticipated new Fink studio album (due for release in 2017). With each track being recorded fast, live, using one vintage mic, and one vintage amp, Fink and a host of guest musicians were intent on creating a modern blues record. helma’s origin seems to suggest that Natasha Jacobs’ musical abilities sprouted from the singer-songwriter almost spontaneously, whilst she convalesced after a life-changing fall from a ladder. Although there is surely more of a back-story than that, this was when she started writing songs and playing guitar. The Brooklyn, NY-based project itself began two years later as a solo endeavor but soon became a band when Daniel Siles, Maciej Lewandowski and Juan Pablo Siles joined.
n Thelma’s Self-Titled debut, Natasha doubles down on at least one aspect of the tale; she asserts her right to be fallen. In doing so, “Thelma” reveals both a self that has been projected onto her as well as the fantasy of her own projected self. While the songwriter’s falsetto is effortless and pure - its brilliant intricacies conveying playfulness and impetuousness - these seven songs are anything but pure. They make no pretense of representing a natural or spontaneous expressive moment. They are fastidious. And they are gigantic. If anything, the songs exude that most impure, un-sweet, un-angelic motivation: ambition. Within the lyrics too there is a thematic insistence on the writer not wanting to be pure or objectified.

List Price $14.99 BONNY DOON's mastery of restraint and melodically vulnerable songwriting comes into its own on their self-titled debut full length. Its essence is floating, folk-ish rock that summons the tossed-off grandeur of early SMOG or the SILVER JEWS boombox tapes, and the dead-eyed poignancy of NEIL YOUNG’s gloriously unhinged Ditch Trilogy. Though it took years of patient work, the band has finally succeeded in capturing the complete spirit of BONNY DOON, creating a breathing web of sound that feels equally sublime and accidental. Songwriters Bill Lennox and Bobby Colombo had been collaborating together low-key for a year and a half when they invited drummer Jake Kmiecik and bassist Joshua Brooks, both just 20 at the time, over to their studio space to flesh out some songs in early 2014. All four were active in Detroit’s fertile punk scene, playing at the time in TYVEK, GROWWING PAINS, and PRC. The familiar approaches of punk did not feel right however, and the songs initially felt stiff and lifeless. It wasn’t until the four tried to play as quietly as possible, with songs shambling along like a car with wobbly wheels, that the band was born. Deconstructing their sound allowed the music to unravel into something open-ended and beautiful, making space for Lennox’s effortless and subtly smart lyricism. Natural progressions were embraced and Bonny Doon began playing shows around Detroit in the same loose and flowing manner as their sound was evolving. Recordings intended for a demo were instead released as a debut 7” on Salinas in January of 2015, and four track recordings from a band retreat in Northern Michigan followed as a tape, “Classical Days and Jazzy Nights” (Life Like), in March of the same year. When the time came to record, the same ethos of fluidity was applied. The band began tracking on a reel-to-reel tape machine with longtime friend and collaborator FRED THOMAS (Polyvinyl Records, SATURDAY LOOKS GOOD TO ME) at his studio in Ann Arbor, then spent months meticulously stitching together a finished work at their practice space in Detroit’s Russell Industrial Center. The end result is a glistening, sun-dazzled patchwork of deftly arranged pop melodicism, Echoplex-bathed country heartbreak, and fragments of wandering, blurry jams tying together the labored songs and less calculated strands. Though lifelong Detroiters, BONNY DOON represents a nearly direct counterpoint to the common narratives of the city they’re rooted in, opting instead for defiantly chill ways of being; visual and musical motifs celebrating simplistic joys. The real irony comes in complex layers, however, as they hide their saddest sentiments under the most stoned, seemingly spontaneous jams. Returning Current Snowblink’s newest collection of songs, Returning Current, is an unflinching study of human relationships – to self, to other, and to Other, and to the threat of actuality of losing those unrepeatable prizes. Set for worldwide release on March 10 via Outside Music/Redeye, the Toronto/Los Angeles duo of Daniela Gesundheit and Dan Goldman began the recording process with a text based ‘mood board’ developed by Gesundheit to portray the sensations she wished to evoke in the production of the album. What results is “mastery at its liquidiest” claimed Leslie Feist in a personal letter to the band. A collection of songs that find the speaker reporting in the James Blake-esque ballad “Second Sight”, that “the sky was kneeling on my back to pray,” or elucidating the slipperiness of desire, as in the album’s title track “Returning Current”. These are private songs, domestic songs, songs to be absorbed over time. arlor Walls’ debut album Opposites is appropriately named. The trio of Alyse Lamb (guitar, vocals), Kate Mohanty (saxophone), and Chris Mulligan (drums, synth) channel a sound that plays with extremes. At times heavy and playful, vulnerable and strong, dark and humorous, exacting and unhinged, it recalls the everyday taming we all do to harness our wild parts, and invites us to let them be. The band explores how far they can push the listener in one direction, while still holding the opposite qualities intact. How much dissonance and melody can exist at once? Can a rhythm be fun yet challenging? From the opening track “Crime Engine Failure”, we get the unsettling feeling of gears churning. A relentless drumbeat refuses to evolve as the vocals begin the song in an all-together different timing. This push and pull is where the band thrives. Unsure where the anchor is, they perform a balancing act. Second track “Cover Me” whips in like a charging bull and settles on a groove-laden bass, only to dive into chaos with Mohanty’s box-cutter tone and Lamb’s pleading, urgent vocals. In “Play Opposites”, she begs the question, “Is this what you wanted Mother? Empty shells to fill your hole?”, as the music slowly unravels into a wash of noise. On songs “Love Again” and “Hesitation”, the trio walks the fine line between pure pleasure and madness, encouraging you to thrive in between the two. It would be best to listen to Opposites in a giant cavern around a fire surrounded by your tribe for one last dance before you head out to fight the revolution. Walking a tightrope between genres, you could take this to be true: It rocks, it drops, it grooves, it melts, it rolls, and like most forces of nature and spirit it’s wisest to relax and maneuver with the current rather than wondering why. “Parlor Walls are the band you hire to play while you dance around the world burning. Eclectic debut album by folk powerhouse featuring multi-award winning members of Bellowhead, Furrow Collective, Leveret, Faustus and many more, fronted by celebrated folk doyenne, Eliza Carthy Pioneering English traditional folk powerhouse, Eliza Carthy, first assembled the Wayward Band in 2013 in order to explore and celebrate her long and varied career in folk music; 'the last truly underground music scene'. To do this Eliza put together a team of hugely talented people from across the UK, and set out on the road to promote her 'Best Of' compilation, 'Wayward Daughter,' which coincided with a biography of the same name. Since then, the band has become a festival favourite, and Eliza has been awarded the MBE for services to folk music. Eliza and the Wayward Band loved playing together so much it seemed natural and inevitable, as well as characteristically ambitious, that this 12-piece would set about recording an album. Early in 2016 they did just that. 'Big Machine' is the result and the renowned Real World and Rockfield Studios are where it all happened. 'Big Machine', produced by Jim Sutherland, will be released by Topic Records in February 2017. The material represents a healthy slice of everything good that is happening in traditional music now, across a sparkling spectrum of sound. The album features three contemporary songs; Eliza's own 'You Know Me' about the migrant crisis and notions of hospitality (featuring MC Dizraeli), a powerful cover of Ewan Maccoll's Radio Ballad 'The Fitter's Song' (at the behest of Peggy Seeger - and the song which inspired the album title) and an affectionate reworking of 'Hug You Like a Mountain' (Rory MacLeod), reimagined here as a duet with Teddy Thompson. There are also several examples of the Broadside ballad collections housed in Chetham's Library in Manchester given a new twist with music by Eliza and the band. This follows an acclaimed programme Eliza presented for Radio 4 about the Manchester Ballads last year, covering everything from songs about and caused by domestic abuse ('Devil in the Woman,' 'Fade and Fall (Love Not)'), to love of the seafaring life ('The Sea'). After releasing a string of quality EP’s for the likes of Charlois, Doppellschall and Permanent Vacation, Amsterdam based artist Dollkraut (Pascal Pinkert) confirmed in 2014 with his debut album “Schimanski’s Black Lullabies” on Brandt Brauer Frick’s imprint The th Gym. The Dutch producer’s back with his sophomore LP due March 10 2017 on Dischi Autunno - new label founded by Jennifer Cardini and Noura Labbani. “Holy Ghost People” sees Dollkraut delve deeper into his recognizable lo-fi and organic sound, inspired by old movie soundtracks, creating gritty atmospheres mixed with the purest of melodies. Album opens with instant hit “Bonnie Said”, where Pascal’s vocals magically merge with the darkest of bass lines. “Valium” continues the journey, increasing the tempo but confirming the feeling of being in a lost sci-fi movie soundtrack. On “Oblivian”, the rhythm slows down again, allowing us to dive even more in this twisted yet candid universe. Title track “Holy Ghost People” (and end track “Victim”) both have this Portishead feeling to them, with their simple yet hypnotic synths swirling like merry go-rounds while “Wrong” feels like escaped from a “Magical Mystery Tour” session in the late 60’s. Tempo increases instantly on “Red Girl”, making the listener feel like propelled in a road movie. “Have th I Told You”, 8 track on the album and yet another hit, develops an addictive, slow groove coupled with Pascal’s vocals, creating the perfect sonic balance. livy ekemezie - friday night Brand new label Odion livingstone, based out of Lagos, Nigeria, presents its debut release, a reissue of the sought after Nigerian disco LP rarity ‘Friday Night’ by Livy Ekemezie. “I was just out of senior secondary school and I wanted to make an album,” recalls Ekemezie. “I was into disco and funk at the time and I was looking for a bassdriven funky sound. The entire idea was to make an album that sounded like something made in London or the U.S. I tried to sound “American” but we ended up with something else: a mix of American and Nigerian.”
‘Friday Night’ was recorded at Goddy Oku’s Godiac 24-track recording studio in Enugu, one of the best studios available in Nigeria at the time. “It took about 9 months to a year to make the album,” continues Ekemezie. “I financed it by myself so I had to resort to friends helping out with loans for session men and studio time. The original LP was released on blue vinyl and that idea came from William Onyeabor. We used his pressing plant and he sold the idea to me. It was different so I said ‘why not?’” The LP has been picked up by many in recent months as the demand for Nigerian disco originals has grown with the track ‘Delectation’ receiving an unofficial edit and DJs like Motor City Ensemble dropping the album into their sets. This first ever reissue of the LP remains faithful to the original issue, remastered and pressed on blue vinyl. It features full original artwork along with new interviews with Livy Ekemezie and contributing musician Jules Elong by Odion Livingstone’s Temi Kogbe.

In this band she plays keyboard parts that are way simpler than the Liszt and Schumann that she usually plays. She also sometimes yells Yoko-style in the background. FWIW she’s also Ben’s wife. SALES TEXT In a previous life, La Féline was a trio. Three voices joined as one on a handful of EPs with diverse influences, trying to find their place between musical genres, languages, and experiences, guided by Ariane’s writing and the luminous vocals of singer and guitarist Agnès Gayraud. Then came “Adieu l’enfance” in 2014, the first album for which Agnès alone carried the feline fur, and made her mark. A unique voice emerged from the album, giving free reign to obsessions that had had only been hinted at previously. As cathartic as its title implies and entirely sung in French, “Adieu l’enfance” was also a rebirth with hypnotic new wave sounds, urban climates and introspective lyrics, a place into which the outside world would sometimes crash, in an explosion of broken glass. While creating her second album, “Triomphe”, La Féline started a new fascinating metamorphosis. Guided by Dionysus, the god of ecstasy (while the minimal synthpop of “Adieu l’enfance” had more Apollonian hints), Agnès started by imagining herself as a ruthless warrior or Miyazaki-like wildling. “Senga”, the first single passes on the flame: in mirror-calm waters, Agnès the feline becomes Senga who talks to wolves, Senga who climbs the trees and knows the secrets of the forest. As total and ambitious album, “Triomphe” is like a place where La Féline transforms the forest into a refuge, the sea into a primordial swamp from which to emerge reborn, and projects herself into a city of Tokyo where nature has re-claimed its rights. In this place we talk of renaissances (“Samsara”, “Le Plongeur” — pulled down to the depths by the sound of an octobass), meet Greek gods and spirit animals (“Senga”), question the place of man in the community (“Le Royaume”, “Comité rouge”). After looking inwards toward the intimate, her songs now open up to others, suggesting a whole unexplored world behind the veil of appearances in the background that we almost dare not lift for fear of going mad, like in Arthur Machen’s short story, The Great God Pan. Is that not what is happening in the worrying final of the song “Gianni”, that sounds like a descent into hell, or in the liberating crescendo of “Royaume” where flutes and sax-ophones mix their strident sounds together in one ecstatic celebration?
