Bahrain This Month April 2019
Editorial Director Liz O’Reilly Contributors Behnaz Sanjana, Dick Potter, Zilia Monteiro Print Production Manager Sabu Sebastian Layout and Graphics Romeo San Miguel, Hatem Monem
Welcome to the April issue. The weather is, finally, changing and Bahrain is preparing for the long-hot summer ahead. The last month before the temperatures really soar brings plenty of outdoor events to keep you busy across the island. From superstar Jason Derulo visiting as part of Spring of Culture to appearances by Arabic greats Ilham Al-Madfai and Ziad Bourji and the return of Tribfest, there truly is something to suit every taste. And, if you fancy something a bit more refined and indoors, I may well see you at Bahrain National Theatre for the opera Don Giovani. April is the month when BTM traditionally engages with the Kingdom’s British community to take our annual look at how relations are developing – they’re good, in case you wondered. In a departure from our usual chat with the British Embassy boss, this year we bring you a look at what British Ambassador, His Excellency Simon Martin, actually gets up to on a day-to-day basis. We also share the thoughts of Defence Attaché, Cdr Paul Windsar RN, who has a historic family connection with the island. And we introduce musical duo Dar Disku, who are a great illustration of the links between the two countries. Elsewhere, in our Interview section, you’ll find a group of innovators. Mohamed Isa was a teen who hated the spotlight but has now become an extremely successful public speaker and author. Noor Mohammed has turned his boyhood passion for model aircraft into a business and is now aiming to get kids interested in STEM (science, technology, engineering and maths). And Seema Haqiqi has put her own bespoke candle business on hold to launch a wax recycling project aimed at helping orphans and reducing waste. In the motoring section, Dick Potter gives his verdict on the Ferrari Portofino, a car he found as impressive as its Italian namesake. And, in dining, Liz has been getting more than her fair share of gastronomic joy this month – she’s the first person to review degustation gem Mahonia and she also tried out a new vegan menu. As always, we’ve got our regular round-ups of motoring and business news and, in Lifestyle, we take a look at some of the Kingdom’s best markets. Bahrain is a little island with a lot going on and BTM is your guide to a great way of life here.

Mohamed Isa with his Best-Selling Author Award
Leading Light, p38
From Aerodynamics to STEM, p36
SPEAKING OF SUCCESS… Mohamed Isa, of 3D Speaking, told Liz O’Reilly how he went from humble beginnings to becoming the Gulf’s youngest CFO, a hugely successful public speaker, author, publisher and generally happy man. “Many people think that I was born with a golden spoon in my mouth,” says the award-winning writer, who has published books such as The Big Question, with US TV and radio host Larry King, and The Success Blueprint, with Canadian-American motivational public speaker and self-development author, Brian Tracy, among others. “But, that’s not the case. I was born with strong hands and a strong will.”

He adds: “Many people also think I was born a speaker. Again, not true. I had a terrible experience when I was forced to give a speech in public, I arrived at an event and a paper was thrust into my hands and I was told ‘You have to do it’. My family was in the audience and I knew I wasn’t doing well. It was the most horrifying thing. Later, I sat next to my uncle and he said: ‘You brought shame on the family, can’t you read?’ I was 13 years old and vowed I would never speak in public again!” And, true to his word, the teenage Mohamed avoided the spotlight declining all attempts to get him on stage throughout his high school years. “But, when I reached university, I realised that being able to give speeches is important for success,” he says. So, he began to educate himself, saving his pocket money to buy books on psychology and public speaking and volunteering in what he saw as “my platform to go out into the world”. He also volunteered to cover the university’s counselling office and one day the director called him in and told him of an opportunity
with multi-national giant Unilever. The only draw back being that he would need to live in Jeddah. Smiling, he comments: “I said I didn’t much fancy moving to Jeddah but the counsellor told me, ‘you will stay in a five-star hotel and get a salary of BD1,200’ – I decided to give it a go!” There were 800 applicants for eight places and Mohammed was chosen, one of only three Bahrainis to take up a place. Much to his delight, he was actually sent to work in Dubai, though he did later make the move to Jeddah. He says: “It was a great journey and that was how come I moved back to Bahrain to another company and became the youngest chief financial officer in the Gulf, at just 26.” That position involved everything from preparing for the company’s initial public offering (IPO) and stock exchange listing to raising capital and debt. “When I started there, the company’s assets were USD66 million, and four years after my joining, that had risen to USD428 million,” says Mohamed. But, not one to rest on his laurels, he wanted more. He explains: “I could have stayed as CFO, I had a very nice life, but on December 2, 2015, I left the company to follow my passions of speaking, writing and travel.” Since then, he has done just that. A fiercely committed coach and speaker, he helps executives and their teams to increase sales and productivity. He speaks both as a motivator and as a trainer and creates collaborative books in which he and other acknowledged experts share their knowledge and advice. Topics covered are: customer service excellence – which is dealt with in his book Chai Karak – A Customer Service Story. How to be a world-class speaker – Mohamed is certified by champion speaker Craig Valentine and has co-authored a best-selling book on www.bahrainthismonth.com

the subject. The secret to sales, profit maximisation and employee engagement, as discussed in The Success Blueprint. And he is in the process of adding start-up business practices to his repertoire, in line with his soonto-be-launched latest book. And, just for good measure, he is also the Middle East’s only ITMI Certified Tour Director, taking groups to Europe and beyond. He explains: “I love to travel, I love to interact with people; this is the perfect way for me to do both. I’m trying to have fun with my life. I hate to be confined and this allows me to do my own thing.” It’s a busy life, but Mohamed adds: “People often ask me, ‘doesn’t it cause a problem doing so many different things?’ but I tell them, if I can manage them all, then why should I choose. I will have multiple projects in hand and I say to myself that, from today, I have 20 tasks to be completed in 100 days.” One of those tasks is to complete work on a new book on start-ups, which will be launched in May 2019. He explains: “There is the argument of why another book on start-ups?

Inspiring his audience
Many people think that I was born with a golden spoon in my mouth.” There are so many of them. But this features local start-ups, it brings local experience to the table so it will be useful for those who are looking to launch in this market.” He has just launched something new – the 1,000 Authors Mission – a project to involve people who would like to be published, but don’t know how. “I want to create a series of collaborative books, across a range of fields,” he says. “Being published is something many people dream of; it gives them a chance to talk about their achievements and offer insights to others. I’ll be looking to businesspeople in Bahrain and beyond to create collaborations and professional networks – when you become part of a collaborative book, you automatically have a connection and an introduction to others who are also included.” He aims for each book to have 36 co-authors and the undertaking will be a long-term project over several years. He is also planning a publication of women’s success stories as a follow-on from a documentary he took part in back in 2005 with a US director. There’s a follow-up to his earlier book Chai Karak – A Customer Service Story, which was
inspired by appalling customer service from a bank and is a mine of great information for bosses on how not to do customer service! Karak Express will give the same insights on sales – to produce it Mohamed researched 1,836 resources to find 247 insights! “The idea is that managers will read it and then go talk about it with their team to improve service,” says Mohamed. Later will come Karak Break. Achievements In August last year Mohamed wrote on his Instagram account @mohamedisa3ds that he had recently passed 1,000 days since leaving his CFO position. In that time, amongst other things, he had: delivered more than 60 speeches around the globe, including one at Googleplex in California; written almost 30 thought-leadership articles; co-authored two Amazon bestsellers, with Larry King and Brian Tracy; published Chai Karak; consulted widely across several industries; zip-lined from an 11-storey building; slid down a 450-metre office building; climbed the Atlas Mountains; and paraglided from 2,000 metres. He concluded the post by saying “What’s next? I see unlimited possibilities…” April 2019 35

Noor Mohammed explains how a boyhood obsession with model aircraft has led him to found not only an international business but also a STEM promotional system aimed at attracting kids into the field. Noor Mohammed
LIZ O’REILLY
FROM AERODYNAMICS TO STEM

oor’s interest in aeronautics stems from a chance childhood encounter with a basic model plane. He explains: “I got interested when I was eight or nine years old and I saw a small model aeroplane that was operated with a rubber band. That’s where it all started. I got that plane after two years of begging my parents – it was in the 1980s and it was 25 Rupees. I broke it on the first flight and started repairing it; that started the passion that I still have.” He studied engineering and robotics and then got his Master’s in Business Administration. “From that I went into advertising and marketing. But, at the back of my mind was always my passion,” says Noor. After several years working in various aspects of commerce, Noor decided it was time to set up his own venture, saying: “It was my hobby and my passion and, 38 years later, I converted it into a business.” Seeing a gap in the market in his native India, he began by setting up hobby stores retailing model aircraft. He now has four shops in Pune, Mumbai, Chennai and Bangalore, plus a production facility and a substantial online retail business with products related to both hobby and education users. Noor came to Bahrain in 1999 wanting a challenge. “It’s a small place where lots can be done. You get recognised fast in a small place,” he says. He launched Avionic Global, in Hong Kong with the aim of ‘Retailing hobby products and promoting DIY and STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) activities across 36 April 2019

an audience comprising of seasoned hobbyists, entry-level enthusiasts and students’. He has now set up a consultancy in Amwaj specifically targeted at school children and young people using his expertise in model aircraft design, 3D printing and robotics as a starting point to engage them in STEM activities. He says: “When I was talking to my children, aged eight and 10, I realised that as much as
they are good in their studies, the application to use what they are learning was not there. I saw an opportunity because of my children. Others are in the same position, so I started getting them into STEM activity. “I started doing STEM in India, took it to grass-roots level to schools and institutes of technology trying to impart the knowledge that there is a lot of maths and physics that goes into designing and producing aerodynamic and robotic projects. “Here, in Bahrain, we are working with schools and a private studio for kids and adults. These STEM activities are designed to fit the age groups of eight-10, 11-14 and then older ones. “What we’re trying to do is get the children ready for what they might want to be in the future – an engineer, pilot, space explorer. “Courses cover areas such as aerodynamics and the structural engineering of aircraft – shape of the wing / fuselage et cetera. Rapid prototyping. 3D printing. CAD – computer aided design – not just design, also architecture, product design and aircraft design. “We want to complement the education system that’s already here, going hand in hand, getting kids to ask questions, make it fun. This is an after-school activity at the moment. In India schools have taken it on as a course in school. I would love to take that forward here, as a STEM lab – part of a school’s curriculum. “The whole idea of starting STEM in Bahrain is not about money, it’s about giving back something that’s not taught here yet.” Noor can be reached at 34 037-918 or info@ avionicglobal.com for further details. www.bahrainthismonth.com

Charity champion Seema Haqiqi talks to Behnaz Sanjana about a project to benefit orphans and the environment.

andle artist Seema Haqiqi diligently works away in the tiny pantry on the premises of the Tree of Life Charity Society every evening, melting old candles and moulding them into pretty new ones for the Candle of Hope project that she has spearheaded. All proceeds from the sale of the recycled candles will be donated to the 550-odd orphans that the Tree of Life Charity Society supports. “We sometimes have students, housewives, working and retired individuals volunteering,” she says, removing her apron to sit for a chat. “The project has brought together people of all nationalities, religions and abilities. One of our most active volunteers is wheelchair-bound.” This idea of altruism germinated in August last year, when her environmental activist friend Nasra Bu-Ashwan, a great proponent of ‘zero waste’, asked her if she could make use of old candles. “Well, not for my own handmade candles, but I thought: why don’t we collect more and recycle them for charity.” With Nasra and the charity society on board, the action plan kicked off later that year. Seema has put the work of creating her own designer brand of candles with bespoke Arabic fragrances on hold to prioritise this philanthropic endeavour. She says: “People are unaware that candles can and should be recycled. We spread this awareness, and encourage people to buy recycled ones or safely make their own. Discarded candles just lie in landfills and, wax being highly flammable, can burn the garbage around and produce toxic fumes in the summer heat. Also, birds and stray animals can die of 38 April 2019

eating it.” Besides unwanted / leftover wax brought in by individuals, there are collection boxes set up at large organisations like Gulf Air, ALBA, BAPCO, Batelco, Credimax, Bahrain Credit and ABC. “A major retailer has given away thousands of candles that are unfit for sale to us to make into new ones. We have also received our raw material from churches and Ma’atams, and have collected over 5,000 various candles thus far.” The initial plan was to have a charity sale in April, coinciding with World Orphans Day and Arabic Orphan Day. But the lack of suitable equipment, space constraints, corporate sponsorships falling through, and the labourintensive nature of the project have thrown a spanner in the works. She says: “We have not
seen much luck with the venue for our sale either, which will be a uniquely interactive event, where people can even make their own candles. Children can play around with and decorate differently-shaped, ready wax pieces for a safe, fun experience.” With the influx of so many candles, the need is for more volunteers and funds to buy better equipment. She explains: “We only have two sockets to plug in our hot plates, and I can melt half a kilogram of wax at a time. It would be easier with more funds to buy a large wax melter to start with, and a bigger place to work.” She hopes to reach out to large corporate and government entities to support this project, and definitely needs more helping hands aboard, besides people enthusiastically buying the final products to help the beneficiaries. The mother of four juggles the marketing, communication, meetings with prospective sponsors and managing volunteers along with her household duties. She says: “I’m lucky to have a patient and supportive husband who was the one to encourage me to learn the craft of candle making some years ago. “It is tiring, but when I think of the kids who need all the support they can get, it keeps me going. I’m also setting an example for my children by using my skills for good, not just for monetary returns. No one knows how long they will live. I should at least be able to speak of good deeds on my judgment day.” Follow @candle.of.hope.bh, @mycraftytouch, @zerowaste_bahrain and @treeoflifecharitysociety on Instagram www.bahrainthismonth.com

Refurbished Water Plant Launched
Date Set for Medical City Construction Arabian Gulf University has said bids have been received for construction of the multi-million-dollar King Abdullah bin Abdulaziz Medical City, with the contractor expected to be finalised in June and work due to commence in the third quarter of the year. The project will be built on a huge plot at Askar, donated by His Majesty King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa and is funded by a USD1 billion grant from the late Saudi King Abdullah bin Abdulaziz Al Saud. In a statement, Arabian Gulf University said construction was expected to take two years and the hospital is scheduled to start receiving patients in early 2021. Once operational the medical city will have 500 beds, a full range of outpatient clinics, 15 operating rooms and quality support medical services such as advanced laboratories and a pharmacy.

He said: “We are proud to have re-built this industrial landmark in the Kingdom
after a two-year development period, in which we have been able to raise the production capacity of the plant from 6,000 to 45,000 bottles per hour, produced using the latest technology imported and installed by the German company KHS.” The majority of the plant’s production will be exported to Kuwait, Saudi Arabia and Iraq.

Nursery celebrations
HE Simon Martin
A Day In The Life With DSAME and colleagues
In a departure from our normal interviews, for this years UK in Bahrain feature we give an insight into the day of British Ambassador, HE Simon Martin. “I’m not a very early riser, if it can be avoided,” His Excellency confesses, adding that exercise – he is a keen runner – happens in the evening, if there’s time. “I’m very lucky to live in this residence, the run around the grounds is a half kilometre.” Most days, breakfast is an outside affair shared with wife, Sophie, at which the couple check and coordinate their diaries, since they often attend events together. However, on our example day, the ambassador begins with a working breakfast with the Defence Security Advisor Middle East (DSAME), Sir John Lorimer, the Head of UK Maritime Component Command, and Defence Attaché, Cdr Paul Windsar.
46 April 2019
DSAME is a regular visitor to the Kingdom and will be updated on any developments since his last visit before heading off to meetings with senior BDF personnel. The ambassador would then continue with his day by running through his upcoming schedule with executive assistant, Christine, and making time for embassy staff to discuss and update him on their different areas of responsibility. One of the subjects of discussion is consular cases. There are nearly 10,000 British people living in Bahrain and the embassy’s consular role is to provide assistance to those British nationals overseas that need help most. His Excellency says: “When you look at the work of the British Foreign Office, through its embassies, it focuses on three areas: promotion of national security, not just through defence but also political relations; advancement of prosperity; and protection of our people. “We have a number of British nationals in Bahrain who are unable to leave because of travel bans. These are mandated through the courts for disputes and debts. My vice consul keeps me updated on current cases and we will discuss how the embassy can be of assistance.” Getting ready to head out to his next meeting, the ambassador encounters his head of press and public relations, Cheryl, who wants him to sign off on a new project, about which he is very excited. “It’s to launch the Ambassador for a Day initiative to coincide with International Women’s Day [in which the student winner of a competition will shadow HE]. It’s not just a gimmick, there are two main purposes,” he explains. www.bahrainthismonth.com

His Excellency also gets to have some fun with Chelsea Pensioners at the Poppy Ball and, below, with Sophie at the Rugby Club for the West Asia Cup Final
“The first is that I’m always trying to find ways to make Britain and the embassy accessible, explaining to different groups of Bahrainis why we need each other. The competition requires young Bahrainis to produce a short video explaining how they would influence change, which will be fun for them and give them a chance to practise their language skills. “The second aspect, and this is something that is an FCO global priority, is about promoting women’s empowerment through supporting women in public life, politics and positions of influence. In Bahrain, this is already happening. There are lots of women in very senior positions in public life, who are great role models. The competition is open to female students, aged 16-21. We will announce the winner at the birthday party for Her Majesty the Queen, in April.” For his first official engagement of the day, the ambassador dashes across town as he has been invited to visit a British nursery school’s 10th anniversary celebration, where, he says with glee, he has been promised “flowers, songs and cake”. Though that would probably be reason enough to head classroom-wards, His Excellency says: “It’s one of many British educational institutions and it’s a point of pride that parents want to send their children not just to English-speaking schools, but to those that follow the British curriculum. I think it reinforces the bond between nations and creates a familiarity that helps us in many ways.” His next port of call sees him rejoining DSAME for a call on Crown Prince Shaikh Salman bin Isa Al Khalifa, who is also Deputy Supreme Commander of the Bahrain Defence Force. “He [the CP] has a huge role in the www.bahrainthismonth.com
defence of Bahrain,” says His Excellency. “Defence is also an important plank of our role and relationship. HRH the Duke of York opened the British Naval Support Facility, the first of its kind east of Suez since the former HMS Jufair closed in 1971. This is a very important example of the UK’s commitment to the Gulf and the wider region. In its first year of operation, it’s already proved its worth, not just for UK sailors but also for joint training. There will shortly be a Type 23 frigate permanently stationed there.” Then it’s back to the embassy to meet with the Australian Ambassador visiting from Riyadh, Ridwaan Jadwat, who is also accredited to Bahrain, Oman and Yemen. When countries do not have their own embassies in Bahrain, they rely on their diplomatic colleagues to keep them updated on issues such as changes in government, recent elections, local action plans and the like. It is now lunchtime, and, while still working, His Excellency is joined by his wife, Sophie, at a Bahrain British Business Forum (BBBF)
meeting where he listens to a speaker from the Economic Development Board (EDB). He says: “The BBBF is the most vibrant, busy and effective networking platform that I’ve worked with at any time in my career. It brings together Bahraini and British businesses and is great for developing contacts; it also has a number of special interest groups. The EDB also has a special focus on the UK, so I’m happy to support the event.” Later in the afternoon there is a planning meeting for a joint working group which will involve ministers from Bahrain and Britain getting together in the coming weeks to discuss collaboration mechanisms in areas such as education, sports, research, environment, commerce and trade and investment. For most of us, that would be the end of the working day but the Ambassador frequently attends evening events – his record is four in one night! This evening, he and Sophie are off to an art exhibition in Muharraq, which is being launched by HE Shaikha Mai bint Mohammed Al Khalifa, president of Bahrain Authority for Culture and Antiquities, along with Shaikha Halla. “This is something we want to support because the whole regeneration of Muharraq is a source of great pride and interest, particularly because the Prince of Walesfounded Prince’s Fund has been working with the Ministry of Housing for the last six years advising on how to build in sustainability and the most effective new building design for Askar; they are now helping to formulate a master plan for Muharraq.” Smiling, he adds: “I don’t think I’m expected to speak – but I always have something up my sleeve.” Then, it’s back to the embassy for 6.30pm to host a drinks reception for British fintech startup Adsertor, which launched in Bahrain Bay about a year ago. It is making an impact with its data integration software products and is talking to Bahrain University about setting up a centre of excellence for young Bahrainis to develop data skills. “I’m happy and feel it’s useful to host an event like this,” says the ambassador. “I expect this to build around the Gulf and have invited 70 or 80 potential collaborators – the main purpose is to raise awareness of this exciting new development.” With the reception done, it’s time for Facetime with family and friends back in the UK and around the world, many of whom will be visiting during Formula One. And, after a long day, the ambassadorial head can finally hit the pillow for a well-deserved sleep. April 2019 47

The Importance of Military and Family Alliances team builds UK-Bahrain military relationships, security, capacity, capability and prosperity with a defence focus but within a broader fusion of diplomatic, political and military engagements. Our UK-Bahrain relationship is over 200 years in the making, is strong and we seek ways to continue to work closely and achieve stronger bonds. My father always taught me that it is important never to take a friendship for granted. As the British Defence Attaché, I am the Chief of Defence Staff’s personal representative in Bahrain. My working day, every day and evening, is extremely rewarding and varied. It requires me to mix diplomacy, intellect, tact, strategic thinking and decisiveness, initiative; have moral courage, independence, maturity and confidence. It can be challenging but is always enjoyable.
Cdr Paul Windsar RN
Cdr Paul Windsar RN enlightens BTM about his role as British Defence Attaché and an important family connection to the island. Please tell us a little about your background. You have built an excellent military career over 35-plus years. Would you say life in the military has benefitted you in both professional and personal aspects? I have enjoyed, and still enjoy each day, every aspect of being in the military; from an immediate sense of belonging at the age of 16, on the day I joined the Royal Navy, in 1980, through the training and experiences I have been fortunate to be a part of; seeing and sharing the ups and downs in the world that have, on occasions, required us to fight to protect all that, and those, we hold dear. As well, of course, as celebrating momentous occasions – such as the end of the Berlin Wall, Royal Weddings and births, military unions and unique periods in my 35-plus years. However, shining bright as a beacon, in among all the www.bahrainthismonth.com
What does the Royal Navy do here and what do the new Naval Support Facilities (NSF) bring to Bahrain? The British Embassy has a very close relationship with the Royal Navy in Bahrain. The role in both Bahrain and the Middle East is very broad and can be best understood in the following activities:
positives of my career, and also during the unsettled times where we all have to dig that little bit deeper, it is people, friends and family that matter the most and I would consider to be the best part
Preparedness for contingencies – The yearround presence of high-readiness Royal Navy assets provides the UK government with a choice of options in the event of a humanitarian crisis or a deterioration in regional security.
What does your role as British Defence Attaché entail? I am very privileged to work within a close-knit and friendly British Embassy with a great team who made me feel welcome. For us all, relationships and being one cohesive group is key to supporting His Excellency the Ambassador and ensuring our wider joined-up friendships with Bahrain. In Bahrain I am fortunate to wear four hats: that of Naval Attaché, Military Attaché (land), Air Attaché and overall Defence Attaché. I have a small, focused and dedicated Defence Section consisting of an Army Staff Sergeant and a UK locally employed civilian. We join with our embassy colleagues to promote and achieve government policies. Specifically, my
Disrupting piracy – Piracy threatens international shipping in the Gulf of Aden, Indian Ocean and Horn of Africa and has a knock-on effect on the world economy. It has a human cost for merchant seafarers and their families. We realise that navies cannot stop piracy alone, as it has its roots in political instability ashore, but they can deter and disrupt attacks, making it harder for pirates to operate. The Royal Navy deploys frigates and Royal Fleet Auxiliary support ships, together with maritime patrol helicopters and Royal Marine boarding teams with medical backup. Royal Navy personnel often lead or augment command teams directing multinational operations. At the height of piracy in 2013, a World Bank report suggested that piracy in April 2019 49
unitedkingdomsupplement this region was costing the global economy USD18 Billion as shippers were forced to change trading routes and pay higher insurance premiums. Preventing terrorism – Many of the UK’s allies in this area face a threat from terrorists in the region. Royal Navy warships and helicopters continue to work alongside other nations to deter or disrupt terrorist attacks and prevent related illegal activities such as human trafficking, drug and charcoal smuggling. Providing well developed mine-hunting expertise – Mines are cheap, easy to use and have the potential to close important waterways. It is essential that the UK has the capability to undertake mine-hunting operations wherever there are large concentrations of shipping or international trade routes. The Royal Navy permanently has four mine hunters in Bahrain (rotating personnel every six months) to develop and retain expertise and experience in warm-water operations. A Royal Fleet Auxiliary support ship is also here in Bahrain to serve as a floating headquarters for Commander UK Mine Countermeasures Force (COMUKMCMFOR) during large-scale mine-hunting exercises. Supporting merchant shipping – The UK Maritime Trade Operation (UKMTO) is a small cell of Royal Navy personnel based in Dubai, which tracks shipping movements and runs a 24-hour reporting service to enable swift communication between merchant shipping and naval forces in the event of an attack or suspicious activity. Members visit ships in the nearby ports of Jebel Ali and Fujairah to provide advice on maritime security. The role of the UK NSF – The NSF has now been operational for one year. It has proven successful in supporting the UK Naval presence in the region. The accommodation is clean, modern and comfortable; with a well-equipped gym, café, shop and recreational areas. The feeling of ‘all of one team’ emanates and is continuing to self-generate. The NSF is a cornerstone of the UK’s ability to maintain a forward presence in the region, and is very important in our defence cooperation programme. Bahrain remains critical to our plans for Gulf security. The Bahrain-owned, UK-operated, NSF underlines the importance of our mutual relationship and permanent presence in Bahrain and the Gulf more widely. Our governments recognise the strategic importance of moving forward together and the mutual 50 April 2019

benefits this brings. This includes nurturing a shared UK-Bahrain NSF vision that, if correctly developed and executed, will add much weight and longevity to our joint current strategic and maritime vision in the Gulf and the wider region. You have a strong family connection with Bahrain, of which you are immensely proud and fond. Please tell us about it? My family started its warm and affectionate love affair with the Pearl of the Gulf in 1953 when my Royal Naval father first sailed into Bahrain. He was a ‘writer’ (or scribe) by trade in the Royal Navy Secretariat branch, and, having written his memories and taken many photos, he was meticulous about inscribing where and when and what the pictures were, to send home to my mother. After his first time here, he sailed from the island with his ship but soon returned, with my mother, for a more permanent ‘posting’. So began our family history and firm footprints in the sand of the Island. He was based at HMS JUFAIR (as was) and they lived in the base and also moved to a small apartment behind Manama Souq, where my elder brother was born, in a small ‘yellow block bungalow’ along Shk Esa (Isa) Avenue. They returned to the UK in the early 1960s and over the years between then and now, Bahrain was woven into my life as I grew up, with family stories, and cine films, of Bahraini friends, culture and sights that always came naturally into conversation and the delicious
smells and spices from my parents’ kitchen. My father always taught me that personal relationships build trust into alliances – particularly here in Bahrain. He also said that “sometimes the meeting [with a person] happening is a most desired and rewarding outcome in itself.” My father unfortunately passed away this time last year but, knowing I had been appointed as the British Defence Attaché, he and mum managed to share some last stories with me, and send me out with a box of photographs, stories, smiles and my own memories to make. He asked that I bring his love and spirit back to Bahrain. Which I hope I am humbly doing. www.bahrainthismonth.com

unitedkingdomsupplement a project and discussed the idea of merging old and new. Next thing, we were playing shows across the world and we had signed our first artist. You’re described as ‘cratediggers’; for the uninitiated, please explain. “Cratedigger (plural cratediggers) (slang). A person who habitually looks through crates of vinyl records at music shops, especially in pursuit of rare or interesting albums.” That’s the traditional definition, but for us it’s much more – looking for films, photos and stories of our region. Not just in record stores but in everyday life!
Do You Disco? BTM caught up with Bahrain-bred musical duo Dar Disku as they prepare to strengthen their British connections with a UK tour.
So, who are Dar Disku? Dar Disku are Vish Mhatre and Maz Almaskati. Dar Disku is a record label and collective formed in Bahrain and now living in the UK. The label acts as a platform for creatives, including musicians, artists, filmmakers and more, to showcase their work. What’s the Bahrain-British connection? We moved to the UK in 2011 for education. Our connection with Britain existed much before this though as we grew up in Bahrain and went to a British international school. Being in this atmosphere, we had many friends from the UK who introduced us to the Brit sound that was so big at the time, all the way from UK hip hop and grime, with artists such as Wiley and Dizzee Rascal, to the label scene such as XL Records. Hearing this sound really inspired us to move to the UK. Where did you meet? We met at school in Bahrain. We have known each other for over 15 years and are pretty much brothers by now. We met each other at friends’ house parties and realised we always had similar taste in music. We would share mixtapes and compilations. What’s in a name, why Dar Disku? Dar Disku translates to home of the disco. It was appropriate because we wanted to name the label after the sound that inspired us. When and how did you start working together? We had an initial meeting in east London during the autumn of 2018. We sat down and realised that the Middle Eastern music scene was on fire and we also needed to give back to the region that made us fall in love with music. We thought about putting a name to
52 April 2019
What are some of the gems you’ve come across in your searching? Our favourites right now are a disco version of Sidi Mansour which seems to light up dancefloors. We also found an old Turkish disco hit called Kent Yasami by Senay which is a heater. We recently found an Arabic version of the Macarena which seems to go down a treat. How would you describe your sound? A sonic blend of the pre-millennium Arabian disco, dabke and folk sounds within the modern Arabian music scene. Our sets range from ‘60s Arabic swing to red line clipping dabke and Arabic trap! What inspires you? Pretty much anything that has a story behind it. Whether it’s a new artist with Arabian roots, a film, someone’s photography collection, old posters. It all inspires our workflow and process. You’ve had some pretty amazing reactions so far, how does it feel to be getting your music out there? So, so good. We will never tire of meeting people we don’t know and hearing how they came across our music. The press response has been very encouraging with people like [UK magazine] Clash, Resident Advisor and Mille World saying some nice things. This means a lot as these are publications we look at for inspiration. We also have so much fun during our live shows and seeing people from all backgrounds (Arab or not) dance! You’ve got a tour starting in the UK this month, will you be coming to play in Bahrain and the wider region any time soon? We hope to be back in autumn and are currently looking at shows in Dubai, Lebanon and more. If you want us in a city near you, get in touch! We love playing new places. Excellence in Education
The British Preparatory School
For more than 10 years, the British Preparatory School (BPS) has been one of the top contenders for early education on the island. The school provides young learners with an educational environment that makes them feel secure and stimulates their minds to facilitate learning. It aims to help every child reach his or her full potential. At its helm is Sandy Whitford, MBE, a teacher with tremendous experience in the field of early learning. She taught in the UK, Oman and Abu Dhabi before joining Bahrain’s St Christopher’s School in 1980, where she was head teacher for 20 years. Armed with years of teaching experience, she opened the British Preparatory School in 2008 and is primarily responsible for the reputation it enjoys. Today, the BPS has expanded to three villas and two large portacabins, and has 180 students, aged between 18 months and six years. The institution prepares children for future learning by building firm foundations, confidence and self-esteem, as well as grooming them for entry into the larger British curriculum schools. It is well-known for its ESL (English as a Second Language) programmes (for non-native speakers) and has a high number of students being accepted by the British School of Bahrain and St Christopher’s School, which also recommend BPS when they do not have available space. BPS has continued to grow this year with two forms of entry in all year groups. In June last year, the establishment celebrated its 10th anniversary with His Excellency Simon Martin, British Ambassador, in attendance. He was highly impressed with the diction of the children during a musical presentation which was followed by him cutting the anniversary cake. Sandy has facilitated teaching courses through the Ministry of Education for Bahraini teachers and, in 2014, was made a Member of the Order of the British Empire (MBE) for services to education and the British community in Bahrain.

The ISO 14001 certification followed the successful recertification of ISO 9001:2015 for Quality Management System (QMS) and OHSAS 18001:2007 for Occupational Health and Safety Assessment Series (OHSAS), demonstrating the business’ ability to consistently provide quality products and services that meet customer regulatory requirements as well as ensure the health and safety of employees. “We are pleased to achieve the esteemed ISO 14001:2015 certification as well as be recertified in ISO 9001:2015 and OHSAS 18001:2007 international standards. This demonstrates our commitment to continually
improve our services and create a sustainable business to protect and preserve our environment. In regard to the health and safety of our employees, our goal is zero harm as we are passionate about safety, security and service excellence. This means we will prioritise safety management to protect the health and well-being of our colleagues and those around us,” says Sumaira Yasmin, managing director, G4S Bahrain. “Many thanks to the commitment and hard work of the entire team.” In addition to its recent achievement, the company has been granted an extension of the official manpower limit from 500 to 750 guards, which means G4S can hire more guards and secure more customer properties. Furthermore, it is in the process of opening up a new facilities management, manpower recruitment service and new guarding company within the year, thus ensuring business growth and maintaining its reputation as one of the most recognised private security companies in Bahrain setting the standard for quality and performance. Record Drugs Bust
Future Education
A British Navy warship, HMS Dragon, which is part of the Bahrain-based Combined Task Force, made a recordbreaking seizure of 2,540kg of hashish from a dhow in the Arabian Sea. The drugs stash had been hidden in fishing nets and beneath the engine and this eighth seizure for the Type 45 destroyer gives it the record for the highest number of drugs busts, worth a total of more than BD72 million. HMS Dragon is part of operations
aimed clamping down on terrorist organisations and others using sea routes for smuggling illicit cargo including narcotics, UN-embargoed weapons and Somali charcoal. A Royal Navy statement said: “Flying a routine dawn mission, the crew of the ship’s Wildcat helicopter spotted a suspicious-looking boat from the air. “HMS Dragon, which was beginning her journey back to the UK, immediately altered course to intercept the vessel.”

Schoolboy Adam Rajab is a great example of the close ties between Bahrain and the UK. The 10-year- old, whose mum Anne is Northern Irish and dad Ebrahim is Bahraini-British, is a talented ice skater. He first took to the rink in here in the Kingdom in November 2016 working under coach Michelle Ruh. But, since, like many youngsters, he travels back to his mum’s home country during the holidays, he also joined the Dempsey Andrews Ice Skating Academy team in Dundonald. Thanks to training five times a week at Bahrain’s Funland, he was able to join the team a few weeks ago when members competed in recent
championships in Milton Keynes, UK, wowing the judges to take third place among 300 competitors. And Adam was one of the stars of the show, taking first in his category – boys’ beginners.

Inverness and Loch Ness - Scotland
Off the Beaten British Path
There’s so much more to the UK than London and its surrounding cities. BTM gives you a sneak peek into other enchanting options in the British Isles.
This vibrant city in the heart of the Sottish highlands has a friendly and easy-going pace, making it a stress-free holiday destination. Inverness has a lot to offer – natural beauty, history, shopping, family day trips, cycle trails and walking tours. Take in the impressive views of this city from the top of Inverness Castle, and marvel at the beauty of St Andrews Cathedral. Historical treasures, such as Culloden Battlefield, where the English and Scots fought their last battle to determine the fate of Scotland as a British dominion, and the ancient burial site at Clava Cairns, are just two highlights. The famed Loch Ness is a short drive away. No, you won’t find any monsters here, maybe, but you will see the largest freshwater body in the British Isles, with the picturesque Urquhart Castle, one of Scotland’s largest fortifications, overlooking the lake.
Belfast – Northern Ireland
Isle of Anglesey – Wales Who can resist a stunning stretch of pristine coastline? Anglesey is that and more, where holiday makers can escape into a different world altogether. Aberlleiniog Castle is a hidden gem, with many secrets waiting to be discovered. It combines fascinating history with natural beauty, without any of the crowds, costs or hassle you find elsewhere. This island is known for its lush gardens, especially the 10 private spaces open to the public and maintained by the National Garden Scheme as well as the fairytale-like Plas Cadnant Hidden Gardens. Anglesey’s countryside has more than 220 square miles of unspoilt coast and landscapes that have been declared an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. Cors Erddreiniog is the largest of Anglesey’s fens, with a variety of habitats including extensive reed beds, woodland, heathland and small lakes, as well as specialised plants, such as the fly orchid and the carnivorous sundew. It hosts a rich assemblage of insects, especially butterflies, moths, damselflies and dragonflies. 64 April 2019
You may know that Boney M crooned about the city many moons ago, and that Game of Thrones set is in Belfast, but did you know the Titanic was built here? Recall the maritime legend in the Titanic Quarter, or lose yourself in the mystical, marvellous GoT Territory – whatever you do, it’s going to be a surreal experience. The city is an ideal family getaway, with the Ulster Museum and days spent in the wilderness or on farms, adventure activities and lots of play parks to keep teens and kids enthralled. The First World War-era warship, HMS Caroline, is a must-see floating museum with an amazing story to tell. Do not miss the imposing Belfast City Hall, Belfast Castle, the Grand Opera House and the Botanic Gardens. Cobbled alleyways come to life in the evenings with pubs, clubs, live music venues and bars inviting you to party the Belfast way.
Bath – England In days gone by, the British elite would come to Bath for the supposed healing properties of the Roman Baths dotting the city. Visitors here can still experience the preserved baths, as well a wealth of small museums housed in restored traditional buildings. The Georgian atmosphere is straight out of a Jane Austen novel, the author being one of the city’s most famous residents. The metropolis is rapidly gaining fame as a place with some serious fine dining that will delight visiting foodies. Do sink your teeth in to the famous Bath buns – sweet, currantdotted dough balls sprinkled with sugar. Tourist attractions include the iconic Royal Crescent, the majestic Circus – a street of townhouses – and the Bath Aqua Theatre of Glass amongst many others. There’s plenty to see beyond the city, too, with stunning Somerset countryside to explore, as well as attractions like Stonehenge, Avebury and Longleat Safari Park a short drive away. www.bahrainthismonth.com

Not Your Average Everyday Car, p68
My Life in Cars – Never Forgotten DICK POTTER We have just had the pleasure of visiting two new countries, Australia and New Zealand, and, apart from the jet-lag that a visit to either will inevitably incur, both countries are, quite frankly, truly awesome. One sunset, sitting with a sun downer, as one inevitably does, overlooking a Christchurch boulevard – regrettably I must pause here to offer our condolences to all affected by the senseless, tragic event which recently occurred in that peaceful and beautiful country – I noted the remarkedly large number of old, yet familiar car models cruising by. One model in particular caught my eye and got me to musing that New Zealanders appear to hold onto their cars and make them last, perhaps because of the affection to a brand or maybe the logistical difficulty of getting new ones down there?! Globally though, it does seem that, at times, the marketing people encourage car manufacturers to make an array of different models to appeal to different market areas in different countries. Models with tribal or wind names for example. Didn’t spot many of those in New Zealand. I also consider that ostensibly meaningless brand numbers are put on cars that simply won't be made after a five to 10-year period. Thankfully, some cars have managed to transcend this temporary phase of manufacture and hang around long enough to become iconic and definitive of an era and style. These models have kept the same moniker and provide a fascinating insight into design development. Some of you, my dear readers, may prefer the original older styles and others may prefer the new. Here’s a select few of those you may know. www.bahrainthismonth.com
The Jaguar XJ – you guessed, that was indeed the model which caught my eye in Christchurch, and it was the first model of 1968, the year my missus was born! A mere nine design generations later, the Jaguar XJ still exemplifies British motoring style and remains the car of choice for British politicians and royalty. The humble Honda Civic. Released in 1972, it has now had 10 generations of design change. The 1964 Ford Mustang – synonymous with American youth and Steve McQueen – was expected to sell fewer than 10,000 in its first year but sold over a million in 18 months. The Mini-Cooper. Who doesn't like the original from 1959 and its, by now iconic, appearance in The Italian Job? Ten design generations later, it's still nipping around cities and country lanes – albeit looking a tad chunkier than its original model – yes, Mini Cooper S, I do mean you. First launched in 1970, the Range Rover is now in its fourth design generation. The idea was initially shelved in 1958 and revived in 1966 and the car is revered by explorers, farmers, footballers and, by all accounts, ladies who reside in Chelsea and wear wax jackets and green Wellington boots on a fairly regular basis. Last, but by no means least, there is the simply amazing Porsche 911 design, which has maintained its iconic look forever! Furthermore, it has transcended five decades and seven model generations; simply the flagship of design perfection in my humble opinion. What strikes me most about all these wonderful cars is that they have offered somebody something. More than that however, they have effortlessly outlived their contemporaries and become legends in their own right, rather like our George really? Sorry Ed! Happy motoring all. dick@redhousemarketing.com

Not Your Average Everyday Car Dick Potter puts Ferrari’s “delightful” Portofino through its paces.
68 April 2019
Five years ago, me and the missus were sampling the local grapes and food on the most delightful waterfront in, arguably, the most beautiful coastal town in Italy (Leonardo also liked it in The Wolf of Wall Street) and we vowed then that we would return. So, there was a slight sense of déjà vu surrounding my invitation to test drive the Ferrari Portofino – which shares its name with the town we were in, if you hadn’t already guessed. Portofino is also where the car was seen by the public for the first time in September 2017. When Ferrari asks you if you’d like to take one of its masterpieces and test drive it for the day, without hesitation, you grab the key! The Ferrari Portofino basically replaces the California T, which had a 10-year run and sold more than 11,000 units, making it the best-selling Ferrari in the stable (get it?!). The Portofino offers you the hard or soft-top driving experience option. It’s got 591 prancing horses inside a 3.9 twin turbo V8 engine which races to 60mph (96Kmh) in 3.5 seconds and reaches a top speed of 199mph (318Kmh) in a breathless 10.4 seconds using a seven-speed dual clutch. There are two driving mode options, comfort or sport. I selected comfort mode as in sport mode I found the ride to be a bit on the solid side with a more sensitive throttle and steering. I also enjoyed using
the manual paddle shifts rather than selecting automatic mode – far more fun – and, with the top down, there was the added bonus of increased decibels from the engine as it emitted its ubiquitous Ferrari roaring, howling, burbling and popping. As mentioned before, the Portofino is the California’s successor and, on a point of marketing interest, did you know that approximately 70 per cent of Californias are owned by drivers who had never owned a Ferrari before, poached from other manufacturers; is that not a brilliant marketing success? Also, Ferrari says 85 per cent of California owners use their car pretty much every day, which is more than one and a half times greater than the typical usage on other Ferrari models. Apparently, the back seats are occupied 30 per cent of the time, albeit by very small people! This also alludes to the age demographics of this practical Ferrari for young families. Certainly, the Portofino is an everyday Ferrari and is the perfect car for those who want a fast, luxurious open-top they can drive 24/7. So, the Portofino was designed and built on the California strengths and also addressing its weaknesses. Having had the previous pleasure of driving the California T, in comparison, I found the Portofino to feel much lighter. It is actually 80kg less – www.bahrainthismonth.com
motoring which is a lot in Ferrari terms – giving a more responsive feel. Ferrari has also increased the Portofino’s range and added a tad more – two inches, hey, two inches count – legroom in the back, which, if you want, can fold down for added trunk space. You want to put the top down? Done, in only 14 seconds and at up to 25 mph (40kmh), that got a few admiring looks from the guys behind me! I thought the interior to be similar to the GTC4 Lusso, and yes, I have had the pleasure of driving that also. The large infotainment screen in the centre of the dashboard and a separate screen in front of the passenger displaying the same performance information, including G force, is seriously cool. The interior is precisely as one expects from Ferrari, immaculate craftsmanship. Primarily leather, carbon fibre and aluminum materials, they blend seamlessly into a perfectly luxurious and senses-pleasing cabin, good Feng Shui. I have to mention some of the interesting extras you can get with this beauty. An Apple play, front and rear parking cameras, and – I love this one – a carbon fibre (to minimise weight) cup holder. I hasten to warn you, selecting this little option will set you back, USD2,000, but hey, this is a Ferrari. The button for instant rough-road shock adjustment is brilliant, as is the whole steering design, pretty much everything in a palm span to switch on or off. There have been rumblings that the California’s rear end is a tad bulbous, the car weighty and underpowered, pedantic whining methinks. I did find the Portofino to be more aesthetically appealing than its predecessor. Since the departure of Pininfarina after the F12 Berlinetta, some muse that a bit of elegance had gone from Ferrari but the Portofino has
www.bahrainthismonth.com
regained elegance and Ferrari says the shape was inspired by the 1968 Daytona…yes OK, with the top up, indeed you can see that. The Portofino is obviously not as quick as the 812 (which is called the “Superfast” after all) in a straight line and the 488GTB would be a better bet on the track. But, the Portofino is delightful for effortless cruising at “moderate” speeds and use on a daily basis. With the roof up or down this is a comfortable Ferrari Gran Turismo but with the top down on a sunny day – of which we get quite a few in our neck of the woods – the Portofino is just pure awesome driving fun in a really great looking car. That brilliant motoring combination is what the geniuses at Maranello wanted for their customers. Well, with the Portofino, they got it bang on. Pros? The 2 plus 2, top up or down Portofino does almost everything an 812 or 488 can do. Cons? Er, hmm, tough call…. leave it with me, I’m still thinking!

Users unlock the car by bringing an authorised smartphone close to the door, then start the car by placing it on the charging pad and pressing the start/stop button. The vehicle will also recognise each user’s preferred settings, such as position of mirrors, seats and the steering wheel, as well as controls for the audio, video and navigation systems, and the head-up display.

The highlights of the new Cayenne model include sharper lines with a unique rear section, an adaptive rear spoiler and a rear bench with the characteristics of two individual seats. The new model also offers two different roof concepts, which include a panoramic fixed glass roof fitted as standard and an optional carbon roof.
All Volvo vehicles on the SPA2 platform will be fitted with advanced driver monitoring technology from the early 2020s, to detect drunk and distracted drivers. The move is a response to figures from the American NHTSA, revealing that almost 30 per cent of traffic fatalities involved drunk or drugged drivers in 2017. When the cars detect an impaired driver, they could limit their top speed, alert Volvo on-call assistance and, if all else fails, take over and park the car on the side of the road. A lack of steering input, having your eyes closed for extended periods of time, extreme weaving across lanes and significantly delayed reactions are all signals for the sensors to kick in. DINING
this month FIRST REVIEW
Tasteful and Exquisitely Tasty Mahonia is that rare thing in Bahrain, a newish restaurant that everyone’s heard of but no-one seems to have been to. Liz O’Reilly went to see what all the fuss is about. To be fair, having launched just a year ago with a 16-course degustation menu, a tiny seven tables making 35 covers, a velvet rope and rumours of a three-month waiting list, it’s not entirely surprising that my impoverished journo chums have not exactly been beating a path to the door. But things have changed, well, at least some of them. The surroundings and cuisine are still of the highest quality – of which more later – but the 16-course menu is, these days, only served by special order. Instead it’s been reduced to far more manageable five-, seven- and 10-course options, the smallest, but still hugely generous, of which works out at around BD55 per head, including some seriously good grape pairings – the cellar actually boasts a bottle of Petrus (look it up), but, no, we didn’t try it. There’s also an à la carte option, which would probably be my choice for the future since there were a couple of things on the taster that I could happily eat probably far-too-large amounts of. Another thing that came as a surprise is that there’s a rather nice lounge, complete with some stunning artwork, including a genuine Picasso! (Apparently there’s a Chagall too, but I missed that one.) You can call in here just to enjoy a drink and possibly some very sophisticated bar bites. The main dining area is nothing short of stunning and it’s clear no expense has been spared, but good taste has also taken the upper hand. Banks of candles flicker in glass holders, their flames dancing across an eclectic collection of Lalique and Baccarat glass and crystal pieces. Seemingly fresh flowers are in blooming abundance, their placement providing privacy at the only two-person table. We started with a home-baked bread basket, accompanied by house-made goats’ milk butter – I stuck to just a tiny portion of a parmesan-swirled creation of nutty delight. The first course was the classic Spanish white soup, www.bahrainthismonth.com
the less popular sister of gazpacho, Ajo Blanco. A thick and creamy joy, rich with the flavours of capers, white grapes, marinated almonds and black garlic coulis. Almost dessert-like in its consistency, this is strangely akin to comfort food, despite being cold. The next dish was a complete revelation. Dehydrated watermelon carpaccio served with smoked macadamia nuts, feta cheese snow and sweet and sour dressing. I have to confess, I have never tried dehydrated watermelon before and was really surprised at the almost meaty texture achieved by the dehydration process. The fruit retains some of its sweetness which coupled with the smokiness of the nuts and the tart saltiness of the feta is an irresistible combination. The Mediterranean fish with white asparagus risotto, king oyster mushroom, coconut and galangal sauce was, for me, the only disappointment. However, my dining companion pronounced the fish perfectly cooked and enjoyed it very much. But, to be honest, I found it somewhat bland despite the rich ingredients. However, the Wagyu beef cheeks, which followed, more than made up for it. Accompanied by parsnips, pak choy, pickled celeriac, potato foam and galangal sauce, the flesh was so tender as to barely require chewing and the flavour almost gamey in its rich depth evoking childhood memories of cheaper cuts lovingly braised for hours to release every last grain of the deliciously earthy aroma and essence. A pre-dessert sorbet arrived smoking with dry ice followed by date sponge with chocolate cream and to-die-for mascarpone ice cream. To finish, tea or coffee with a selection of chocolates – served from an intriguing wooden box and all made in-house, playing with the theme of seven, the owner’s favourite number and featuring the seven spices that pay homage to Bahrain’s location on the crossroads between east and west – saffron, cardamom, cinnamon, tamarind, wasabi, chili and ginger. I left feeling full and spoilt and wondering if, under the watchful eye of award-winning executive chef Herve Pronzato, himself a veteran of several Michelin-starred kitchens, Bahrain could be on course to get its own star in the not-too-distant future.

Executive chef Kim
Taking the Vegan Route Liz O’Reilly tried the island’s newest plant-based menu – and will be going back for more.
74 April 2019
Food is one of life’s great joys, or at least it is for me. So, I often sympathise with my plant-based friends. They, undoubtedly, love to eat just as much as I do, but finding places that cater well to the ever-growing vegan fraternity is far from easy. So, the news that Four Seasons Bahrain Bay was to launch Folia, a vegan menu, was certainly met with great joy. But, of course, there’s always the USD64,000 question: would it actually be any good? Well, I guess the fact that it’s Four Seasons is a bit of a giveaway. Add to that it’s a collaboration with plant-based chef extraordinaire Matthew Kenney, who’s pretty much a godfather of vegan cuisine with the stated aim of changing the way the world eats by creating plant-based versions of virtually every cuisine possible, and there’s a fair chance even the most picky veggie fan would be impressed. The Arab world’s most famous vegan, CEO of KBW Ventures, HRH Prince Khaled bin Alwaleed bin Talal Al Saud, has also had a hand in the development, and much of what he touches seems to turn to gold. To test the theory, I roped in a vegan buddy and headed to the Bay for a tasting. First off, let me say that the menu is small, only 10 dishes. However, both chef Kim and the GM assured us that this is simply for the initial roll out – it’s a new concept for them and a first for the Gulf, so, they want to make sure they get it right. If it proves popular, of which there is little doubt, there’ll be new dishes and the possibility of adding vegan-specific eats to the brunch. We tried various plates including beet hoummus – the staple vegan go-to in pretty much any restaurant but done with a twist with oregano cream. More adventurous was the Cacio E Pepe, kelp noodles with crispy black olives and arugula. The noodles had a great texture, firm and exciting to the bite, while the black olives added the required zing to save the dish
from blandness. Dukkah Avocado with spicy greens, preserved lemon, radish and tomato jam was an interesting combination of flavours and brought forth the question I often ask when eating avocados in a restaurant – where on earth do they get them to avoid the extremes of hard or mush I so often confront in the stores? We had a salad nicoise with nori giving the important fishy tang and a piquant Dijon vinaigrette adding an, almost, sweet-and-sour element – to be honest, this could actually have had fish in it, the taste and texture were equally satisfying. My two favourite items were the Wild Mushroom Sandwich and Green Herb Tacos. The sandwich is served on dark, seedy, nutty bread which had been lightly griddled with caramelised onion and truffle aioli – mention truffles and I’m always sold. It’s a really substantial feast, the mushrooms forming a hefty filling and the hint of truffles giving a satisfying savoury beat. Add in some truffle fries and I’d probably never have left (fortunately, they didn’t). The tacos, with roasted squash, king oyster barbacoa-cooked mushrooms and pepita cream guacamole were a real triumph; incredibly tasty with a great combination of flavours and textures. The chunky mushrooms and squash would make this a great main course option. And so to dessert. I can honestly say both myself and my pal were blown away. Vegan ice creams that I’ve tried usually tend either towards the icy or grainy, so to discover strawberry ice cream with a delightful flavour and a texture to match made for widely smiling faces. We honestly thought it couldn’t get any better…and then we tasted the chocolate option. For chocolate ice cream aficionados, the almost mousselike texture might have been disappointing, but for a chocolate fiend, it’s heaven on a spoon! www.bahrainthismonth.com

HIDDEN GEMS IN BAHRAIN
NEVER JUDGE A BOOK BY ITS COVER The Bucho’s Street Food Park only opens at night – and Bill Grieve says it’s quite extraordinary.
80 April 2019
uring the day, one might drive past the venue in the back of Juffair towards the highway and think it could be a closed-off industrial site, fenced with wooden panels. But, when night falls, the whole area comes alive. Lights; action; food! And the food is really good. This restaurant is an open-air concept quite unique in Bahrain, under shade and covered, spacious, well-lit and very basic, but brilliant. The floor is compacted earth and the rough furnishings are almost reminiscent of an old cowboy, outdoor barn dance environment, but you can be assured of a welcome surprise in the great range of exceptionally well presented, high-quality dishes and meals on offer. This is a conservationist’s dream – all the outdoor furniture is made from old wooden pallets, neatly assembled into furniture, and the whole food court is graced with signs demonstrating ‘green’ intentions and slogans. There are a number of well sign-posted and easily accessible waste bins for self-clearing the tables and trays and the refuse is segregated for easy sorting and recycling. A range of recycled wooden table choices and a dirt floor mean the odd spilled drink or food messed is not a problem. The meal selection is prepared by a wellrehearsed team who have a wide range of
cooking utilities available in a neatly laid out camper van which is open sided, allowing visitors to observe their food being prepared and cooked either inside the camper or outside on a hot charcoal or wood-fire grill. The smell of scintillating treats and meats wafts gently about and almost swirls around patrons hypnotising with incredible aromas that will have you looking around wanting more of the scents and smells that are electrifying your taste senses and making your mouth water in anticipation. The staff at Bucho’s Street Food Park are friendly, fast and efficient and as the food flows it is a reminder of what good service, good food and good ambience is all about. This is a happy place, a fun place and a place of tasty food, in a relaxed environmentally responsible and friendly area that will enchant most discerning and planet-conscious visitors and demonstrates the simplicity of food preparation, albeit in the ambience of a desert tent or dune visit experience. Bucho’s Street Food has other sites in Bahrain, at Saar and Riffa, and is generally open from 6pm to midnight. Call 32 114-422 or visit www.facebook.com/BuchosStreet-Food-311973796114699/

Devil May Cry 5 Verdict: One of the best action games in a generation. Rating:
What is it?
Devil May Cry 5 is an action-adventure hack and slash video game developed and published by Capcom. The gameplay features the return of Dante and Nero as playable characters, along with a new character, named ‘V’. The gameplay is similar to the other titles in the Devil May Cry series, focusing on fast-paced stylish action. The player fights off hordes of demons with a variety of attacks and weapons and receives a style-rating in combat based on a number of factors, such as move variety, the length of a combo and dodging attacks.
Gameplay
Devil May Cry 5 isn’t about killing every enemy in the room, it’s about how you kill every enemy in a room, expressing yourself in an almost artistic and highly technical dance of swords, guns and acrobatics. DMC5 is the new pinnacle of this particular subset of the genre, thanks to a perfectly-paced campaign that mixes in three completely different playstyles, each of which contain enough depth to carry a game of their own; a fun and satisfying story; and, quite simply, one of the best combat systems you’ll find in video games.
Tom Clancy’s The Division 2
Played from a third-person perspective, the game takes place in Washington DC seven months after its predecessor, featuring the green poison outbreak, in which a civil war between survivors and villainous bands of marauders breaks out. In the game, players can cooperate with each other to complete objectives. The game will also feature raids, which can be completed by up to eight players.
www.bahrainthismonth.com
Graphics
The game looks and sounds stellar. Style and personality ooze out of every animation, whether it’s Nero’s wild engine-powered sword attacks that send him flying across the level, Dante’s smug teasing of the various bosses, or V’s subtle mannerisms that just add to his mystique. Level design is more linear and much less puzzle-heavy relative to previous DMC games, which keeps the brisk pace up and puts more of an emphasis on skill-based combat challenges.
Dead or Alive 6
With brand-new stages and action, Dead or Alive 6 embodies and illustrates the evolution of true fighting entertainment. The world of DOA is brought back more vibrant than ever, featuring both enhanced visuals and an updated combat system, aimed to provide the highest possible level of technical skill. DOA 6 introduces a new Special Move Gauge (Break Gauge), adding a dramatic strategic element to the fights.
Left Alive
Left Alive is a survival action shooter designed by Square Enix. The game involves the talents of veteran developers Toshifumi Nabeshima, Yoji Shinkawa and Takayuki Yanase, who join forces to create Left Alive’s dark and gritty world. It tells a human story of survival from the perspective of three different protagonists during the devastating invasion set in war-torn Novo Slava in 2127.

technologywebsites VERDICT:
A beautiful and vivid nostalgia trip.
Site: www.dearphotograph.com/ Rating: What is it?
A website that shows a collection of images all with one theme: taking an old favourite photograph and going back to the same spot from which it was taken, and taking another while holding the old photograph within the frame. Each photograph also has a dedication captioning the resulting picture. What you get is a small wormhole that brings the past into the present, taken all over the world by people willing to share their memories.
The Good
Some photos seem sweet, some are nostalgic, some are full of regret, and some of the photos are giddy with the foolishness of youth. Whatever it is, it really stirs an emotional reaction which is incredible from such a simple, straightforward idea. If pictures are worth a thousand words, DearPhotograph makes them worth 10,000.
The Bad
Browsing the website for too long could lead you to shed a few tears, which will either make you the ridicule of your office, if you’re male, or ruin your make-up if you’re a female. It’ll also lead to a sharp decline in workplace productivity as you’ll be hooked.

technologyapps
Apps Review BTM brings you the low-down on the latest and greatest apps on the market.
App: Strava Rating: Verdict: The best exercise app yet for those fitness fanatics. What is it?
Strava is a seriously compelling tool for runners and cyclists, letting you create, find and follow routes and track your speed, distance, pace and elevation. For those who are competitive runners or cyclists, whether on a more serious level or with friends, the app provides leaderboards, personal records and comparisons to friends and other app users.
The Good
Rather than just showing your route and times, this goes a whole step further by really driving that competitive edge. The interface is excellent and really simple to use despite having a plethora of options and menus. It also supports Bluetooth devices, so you can hook up a heart rate monitor to it, if you have one. The GPS and mapping are also spot on for planning routes.
The Bad
You can only unlock the full potential of the app by buying the premium version. Although the base version still has a lot of features, you’ll only find filtered leaderboards, daily progress tracking and long-term goal settings behind the paywall.
App: Evernote Evernote is an app focused on note-taking, with multiple digital ‘notebooks’ helping you keep your thoughts tidy. It features simple to-do lists, a powerful search tool so you can easily find specific notes and the ability to sync between devices. It also lets you share your notes and collaborate on projects with others, easily track expenses and attach files, all through an attractive, clutter-free interface.
App: Pocket Life is busy and there’s not always time to read that article you spotted on your way to work this morning. Pocket solves that by allowing you to easily save web pages and even videos for later, storing them all in one place. It’s much more than just a bookmarking system though, as it also makes them available offline, so you can catch up with things any time you don’t have an internet connection. You can even synchronise your saved articles across every device you’ve installed Pocket on, allowing you to pick up where you left off and continue reading.

It is Lavigne’s first studio release since her self-titled fifth studio album (2013), marking the longest gap between two of her studio albums. Lavigne assumed an integral role in the album’s production and collaborated with several producers including Chad Kroeger, Stephan Moccio, Chris Baseford, Johan Carlsson, Lauren Christy from The Matrix, Ryan Cabrera, Travis Clark of We the Kings, Bonnie McKee, JR Rotem and Mitch Allan among others. The album draws inspiration from Lavigne’s battle with Lyme disease, with her describing the album as an ‘emotional journey’.
Worth a listen?
Head Above Water unveils a different Avril Lavigne, one who proudly bears her scars and is eager to share her journey. It has its moments of darkness, but they’re not sad, they’re stirring. The album is designed to offer solace while also being a rallying call. Inspirational music, in other words, so it’s not entirely surprising that its title track was serviced to Christian radio in advance of its release – a gambit that proved successful. Although the album is weighed heavily by ballads suited for adult contemporary radio, Lavigne fortunately peppers it with moments of levity: Tell Me It’s Over sways with echoes
of a 1950s’ slow dance, Crush is so light it floats into the stratosphere, and Bigger Wow swells with strings.
Verdict: The skater girl is on thin ice.

Blaqk Audio – Only Things We Love
Matmos – Plastic Anniversary
Stephen Malkmus – Groove Denied
Riding a wave of productivity, the prolific duo of Davey Havok and Jade Puget maintain that creative momentum with Only Things We Love, their electronic side project’s fourth set. Returning the gothpunks to the shadowy world of ‘80s synth pop, new wave and polished EBM-lite, Only Things We Love taps into a deep well of influences including Depeche Mode, Ultravox, OMD, Erasure and Nitzer Ebb. The duo have sharpened their attack and tightened their delivery for the album, resulting in an aggressive yet alluring peak in their catalogue.
With Plastic Anniversary, Matmos’ Drew Daniel and MC Schmidt celebrate 25 years of creative partnership. While this might be a silver anniversary for almost any other couple, in this case plastic is much more apt. Schmidt and Daniel explore the potential of everyday objects – in this case, the plastic utensils and containers that surround us – but this time, they divide their experiments into poppy, accessible tracks instead of one lengthy statement. Witty cultural commentary has always been one of Matmos’ greatest strengths, and they deliver plenty of it as they pair sounds derived from plastic with reminders of its lasting environmental impact.
Recorded alone by Malkmus with the support of a stack of synths, drum machines, and a handful of guitars, Groove Denied doesn’t fundamentally push at the boundaries of his music. Whatever electronic influence there is here, it’s grounded in a stylised nod toward the pioneering, eerie analogue experimentalism of the post-punk era – like a sound that’s remembered more than re-created. While these songs fail to deliver on the promised experimentalism of pre-release hype, they are nevertheless prime Malkmus – lovely, off-kilter pop graced with off-hand lyricism.

Penguins
The White Crow
Genre: Horror, Sci-Fi Release Date: April 5 Already receiving rave reviews with viewers calling it terrifying and defying you to watch after dark, Pet Semetary tells the story of the Creed family who swap city life for rural Maine. Their new home is close to an ancient burial ground and, when tragedy strikes, the father triggers a chain of events that sees his dead child resurrected in demonic form. This is the second adaption of horror maestro Stephen King’s book of the same name and it promises to be a belter.
Genre: Action, Adventure, Fantasy Release Date: April 12 Based on the graphic novels by Mike Mignola, Hellboy, caught between the worlds of the supernatural and human, battles an ancient sorceress bent on revenge. This is the last film in the trilogy and, shockingly for fans, does not include Ron Perlman, who has previously made the role his own. But there are good vibes coming from reviewers about the performance of Stranger Things star David Harbour, so, if you’re a fan of the big red good guy, there’s nothing to fear.
Genre: Documentary, Music Release Date: April 5 The Queen of Soul as you’ve never seen her before and a huge treat for fans of the muchmourned Aretha Franklin. The movie shows the singer recording the most successful gospel album of all time, Amazing Grace, and is crafted from never-before-seen footage originally captured in 1972.
Genre: Documentary, Family Release Date: April 17 A cutesy but informative release from Disney Nature, the movie tells the story of an Adélie penguin named Steve and the trials and tribulations he faces in the icy Antarctic spring as he joins millions of fellow males on a quest to find a suitable mate. But first he must build a nest and overcome everything from killer whales to leopard seals, who unapologetically threaten his happily ever after.
Genre: Drama, Horror Release Date: April 5 Based on a murder case that still sends shivers down the spine almost 50 years later. An edge-of-the seat thriller that tells the tale of 26-year-old Tate, a rising star actress about to have her first baby with director husband, Roman Polanski. Plagued by terrifying premonitions, Sharon sees her worst nightmares come to life with the appearance of cult leader Charles Manson and his murderous disciples.
Genre: Biography, Drama Release Date: April 26 One for fans of dance, drama and intrigue, this beautifully shot and intriguing film tells the story of ballet great Rudolf Nureyev and his escape and defection from Soviet Russia as the KGB plotted to stop him. In these days when artists can, mostly, enjoy access to an international stage and Russians travel freely, it seems strange to think that this was the reality not so long ago, during the cold war, and Nureyev was the first to make it out.

lifestyleoutandabout Rustic Appeal – Muharraq Souq
Brilliant Bazaars A ‘souq’ is an open marketplace traditional to the Middle East and North Africa. Bahrain has a few such bazaars that seem to live and breathe, sprinkling visitors with their own unique charm, writes Behnaz Sanjana.
The ‘city’ of Muharraq is the third largest on the island, connected to the mainland by bridges. It boasts its very own souq, Al Qaisariya. One can wander around the area marvelling at the range of wares sold here; spices, teas and even pearls, as you inhale the aromas of halawa, a traditional Bahraini treat, and tiny sweet samoosas being made in sweetshops dotting the bazaar. They’re a perfect accompaniment to the bitter taste of gahwa, should you decide to sip on one on your pit stop in the market. Hussain Mohammed Showaiter Sweets makes some of the best. If all the roaming about makes you ravenous, then Saffron By Jena, nestled amongst old houses in the heart of the area, is great for authentic and tasty Bahraini fare.
The Gentle Giant – Manama Souq This is the old bazaar of the capital city Manama; a labyrinth of shops, small and big selling everything from antiques and Arabic perfumes to jewellery and electronics. The archway of the Bab Al Bahrain building, (literal translation: Gateway of Bahrain), which once housed government offices, marks its main entry point. The revered Shri Krishna Temple here has blessed devotees for over a century, and many famous business houses of today had their humble origins in this souq. The bazaar has its own sub-souqs; while some by-lanes are chocka-block with rolls and rolls of colourful textiles, others are fragrant with exotic spices, and yet others dazzle with jewellers selling exquisite gold, silver, gemstones and pearl jewellery.
Fresh and Green – Central Market This sprawling marketplace is well-known for the purchase of the freshest produce that is either grown on Bahrain’s soil, or imported. Located down the road from Manama Souq, off Lulu Avenue, it’s the place to find great bargains on the wholesale and retail trade of fruits and vegetables. There is a separate airconditioned section for the fish market, thronged by locals and expatriates alike, to get their hands on the freshest catch of the morning. It’s a thriving entity from the wee hours in the morning to late afternoon, after which the area gets pretty deserted, only to be raring to go the next day.
Seasonal Pop-up – Weekly Bahraini Farmer’s Market Located in Budaiya Botanical Gardens, this is a treasure trove of regular and not-so-regular fruits and vegetables and food stalls selling breakfast and snacks. The Saturday morning market initiative was undertaken to lend a stage to Bahrain’s agricultural sector and spread awareness of the variety of vegetation that can thrive on the island’s fertile soils. It also aims to supplement the income of native farmers and encourage residents to buy local. But do hurry; it’s seasonal and closes at the end of the month. www.bahrainthismonth.com
Bizarre Bargains – Isa Town Market This is an open-plan bazaar located in, you guessed it, Isa Town! It is home to a motley mix of shops selling furniture, kitchen and home ware, wholesale groceries, cheap toys and clothes. Here you can find several outlets selling carpets and mattresses at a relative pittance, and numerous shops where you can buy curtains or get your sofas upholstered for a bargain. Come the weekend, and this area is abuzz with Souq Almaqasees, a fascinating flea market. Flyby-night peddlers line the narrow pathways of the maze with their inexpensive (and often second-hand) wares – racks of clothes, antique show pieces and electronics, books, household items and other unusual miscellanea. The grape vine has it that there once was a crocodile and a cheetah (!!!) up for the bid, just to give you an idea of what you might stumble across here. On a more serious note, we recommend staying well away from the animal section which activists are trying to have closed down. April 2019 91

Marvellous
Matera
Once a well-kept secret, this gorgeous city, built into the rock of a ravine, has been popping up on ‘must-see’ lists rather a lot just recently thanks, in part, to its 2019 status as the European Capital of Culture. Found down south towards the foot of Italy’s boot, Matera is known as la città sotterranea (“the underground city”). In its historical centre, the Sassi (cave dwellings), along with the park of the Rupestrian Churches, were awarded World Heritage Site status by UNESCO in 1993. This area comprises a complex of houses, churches, monasteries and hermitages built into the natural caves of the Murgia. Covering an area of 1,016 ha, the remarkable and intact troglodyte settlement contains more than 1,000 dwellings and a large number of shops and workshops. You can find authentic Sassi for rent on Airbnb, and, in fact, there’s quite a market for would-be renovators as they are also turned into galleries, restaurants and charming cave hotels. And, if you’re up for a spot of name dropping, the former family home of Francis Ford Coppola is now a rather gorgeous hotel, the Palazzo Margherita, in nearby Bernalda. When in search of food in Matera, look out for the brilliant handmade cavatelli and orecchiette pasta. There are several fine-dining options, such as the highly recommended Vitantonio Lombardo Ristorante, but also lots of home-style eateries where you’ll find local flavours aplenty, such as the mild sun-dried chillis that infuse many of the most popular local dishes. According to 2foodtrippers.com: “The charcuterie in Matera is second to none. When you eat at Trattoria del Caveoso, be sure to try the lonza. Their take on the cured loin is as buttery as sushi.” Not surprisingly, the intriguing surroundings have given rise to a plethora of small, intimate art galleries and spaces; it’s worth spending an afternoon strolling from one to the next. And, being such an ancient city, there are plenty of museums to explore, including one housing contemporary sculpture and another dedicated to olive oil! There’s also plenty of shopping – both artsy and designer pieces and local foodstuffs. And throughout the year there will be regular events in line with Matera’s European Capital of Culture status.
