Bahrain This Month January 2019

Editorial Director Liz O’Reilly Contributors Behnaz Sanjana, Dick Potter, Bill Grieve, Adnan Sipra Print Production Manager Sabu Sebastian Layout and Graphics Romeo San Miguel, Hatem Monem

First of all, let me take this opportunity to wish a very Happy New Year to one and all. With new developments, exhibitions and more coming up, 2019 looks like being an exciting year on our little island in the sun. The year kicks off with bargains and prizes galore from Shop Bahrain, the annual Autumn Fair and the K Market. You’ll find details of all these in our Happenings Section which, of course, is regularly updated at www.bahrainthismonth.com The Happenings section also lists plenty of other things to get the year off to a great start, from the visually stunning Boulevard Circus to a neon night run and a new-format Spartan race. And, of course, there are lots of opportunities to make the most of the gorgeous winter weather with beach parties and more. In this month’s interview section, we caught up with a couple of big hitters in the shape of Renuka Jagtiani, the woman behind Landmark Group and ARG, and Nour Suliman, who is celebrating 40 years with DHL. We also chatted to Philipp Economou, who has just taken over as the new GM of the InterContinental Regency Hotel. And Adnan Sipra became the envy of lots of young girls and boys when he got the chance to sit down with singing sensation Hala Al Turk. This month’s foodie feature takes a look at fine-dining venues around the island. From tie-ups with Michelin-starred chefs to home-grown venues that go the extra mile and even the newest degustation option. I must admit, I was a little surprised at the variety available on the finedining scene, but, to be honest, I really shouldn’t be since Bahrain has always been innovative in its approach to new and independent venues across a range of cuisines. Sticking with dining, you’ll also find news of new openings, offers and special menus in the expanded Table Hopping section. This month’s lifestyle section features great walking options to get in some New Year exercise as well as an in-depth look at the iconic Barbar Temple in Discover Bahrain. As always, we have news from the worlds of business and motoring as well as all the latest in up-to-the-minute technology and entertainment. We’re really enjoying putting together the new-look Bahrain This Month and I hope you’re enjoying a great read.

TAKE A TIME CAPSULE BACK TO THE PAST Nespresso launches two Limited Edition coffees, inspired by the very first coffee houses in Istanbul and Venice

Café Istanbul

This January, travel back in time with Nespresso and embark on a journey to the historical roots and the lively ambience of the very first coffee houses. Nespresso is launching two new Limited Edition coffees, Café Istanbul and Caffè Venezia, that are inspired by the world’s first coffee houses and aim to bring the vibrant and bustling atmosphere directly to your homes. Istanbul has always been the entry point from Asia to Europe. A melting pot of colliding cultures, flavours, tastes and ideas. With no printing press, Istanbul’s coffee house was seen as the mouthpiece of the city, where wild and rich theories were challenged, with coffee as the natural elixir. Venice has always been the creative gateway to Europe. Home to the arts, music and experimentation, which often made the coffee houses the tastemakers. This fusion of cultures and expressions made the coffee houses wild, complex and elegant places. Follow the footsteps of the past and enter the birthplace of the coffee houses in Istanbul with Café Istanbul. With its intense, black and oriental notes, Café Istanbul will inspire any black-coffee lover, taking them directly into the heart of the www.bahrainthismonth.com

wild and bustling atmosphere of that time. Caffè Venezia, with its elegant and delicate profile, is the perfect muse and inspiration in a cup. Journey to Venice and enjoy a short get-away to the home of arts and music. Encouraing you to fully immerse yourself in a lively blend of history, for the launch the artist Young Rascal juxtaposed contemporary, stylish Nespresso drinkers with evocative illustrations of the first coffee houses and merged today’s drinkers in yesterday’s world. The designer explained: “I was really inspired by the idea of taking a typical coffee lover from today, complete with headphones, and placing them into a scene from the past. Being a lover of history, this appealed to me immensely. The coffee houses of Venice and Istanbul were the hubs of society and a real melting pot. Placing our modern day coffee drinkers with the citizens of that time, made me think – would they fit in? Of course they would! Their clothing would differ, but the age-old art of conversation and laughter would remain. Something I hope I’ve managed to convey in these pictures.”

Caffé Venezia

DISCOVER THE LIMITED EDITION COFFEES There are two delicious coffees to try: Café Istanbul – Arabian Mocha coffee from Yemen mixes with East Indies and Indian treasures to create this cup, reminiscent of the mystery of the Oriental bazaar. Evocative of historical blends, it has an exotic character carrying intense roasted and black pepper spicy notes. Intensity: 10 Serving size: [OL] 25ml or 40ml Caffè Venezia – A taste of history as coffee from the ancient Ethiopian city of Harrar mixes with Indian Arabica to create a cup rich with the exotic perfume of the East. Wild and floral notes combine with a roasted character in this potent and complex coffee. Intensity: 7 Serving size: [OL] 40ml or 110ml Cafe Istanbul and Caffè Venezia will be available for a limited period from Nespresso boutiques worldwide, as well as through orders from the Nespresso Customer Care Centres and online at www.buynespresso.com from January 10, 2019. INTERVIEWS

this month

Renuka Jagtiani

A GUIDING HAND How did you first become involved with the family business? I have been very fortunate to have had a great mentor in my husband, Micky, who started the Landmark Group business, in Bahrain in 1973. Together, we have stood the test of time and overcome challenges to turn them into opportunities over the last four and a half decades.

Omnichannel is definitely a big focus for us over the next couple of years. We are looking at reaching all our customers on every platform through which they want to shop with us. Everyday Teen To Stage Star, p33

You were the driving force behind the creation of Splash, which has become a byword for affordable, up-to-the-minute fashion across the region. Where did the inspiration for the brand come from? Listening to the customer and catering to their needs has always been the essence of our business. So, back in 1993, when we started Splash, we wanted to bring to the Middle Eastern market a fast fashion brand at very competitive prices. Being abreast of the market trends and customer needs helped us deliver a homegrown fashion brand like Splash. Splash has now grown to over 200 stores across 14 countries worldwide and it gives me immense pride to see that the brand has evolved to become one of the most prominent high-street fashion brands in the region.

Despite having left Bahrain for the UAE during the first Gulf War, Landmark is still very much involved with Bahrain through its subsidiary ARG. What keeps the group’s ties to the island so strong? Landmark Group was born in Bahrain and expanded to the region. We have always been proud of our heritage and of being a home-grown company. It’s a happy coincidence that our official launch event [for Oasis Mall-Juffair] also marks 45 years of Landmark Group and our partnership with Al Rashid Group (ARG) in Bahrain. Our partnership with ARG solidifies our bearings in the Kingdom and our ties go back a long way. 45 years ago, when my husband started our business with a small toy store, it was right here in Bab Al Bahrain. So, our roots run deep in the Kingdom. Now with our latest venture here – the Oasis MallJuffair – it feels like we have come full circle, celebrating four-and-a-half decades of business at the same place where it all began.

How involved are you in the day-to-day business of the brands? Or are you more involved in areas such as e-strategy and corporate affairs? Over the last 45 years, Landmark Group has grown extensively, both in retail and hospitality. We have an extremely efficient and empowered team of leaders in the group who head each of our businesses and corporate functions by leading from the front. I work closely with all our business heads to strategise and direct the business, leading them to deliver on our vision of bringing exceptional value to our customers in every way. Over the years, we have transformed our organisation from being a traditional retailer to a leading omnichannel player that caters to the modern customer and offers them the convenience of online shopping.

You were in Bahrain for the official opening of the new mall. Can you tell us what drove this development and how this mall will differ from others in the area? Coinciding with the 45th anniversary celebration of the Landmark Group, the new mall represents what the group always looks to bring to its customers: convenience for the community in a great shopping destination. Set in an area of over 58,400sq/m, the multi-storey Oasis Mall in Juffair will host several of the group’s home-grown brands such as Centrepoint, Home Box, Max, Shoexpress, Fun City; international favourites, Steve Madden, Carpisa and Koton as well as offerings like a Carrefour supermarket The mall will also feature Cinéco Cinemas, the largest cineplex chain in the country, in addition to new format stores of Centrepoint and Home Box.

interview

The new man at the helm of one of Bahrain’s oldest five-star hotels tells Liz O’Reilly he plans to play on the strengths of the Regency InterContinental.

Philipp Economou

A VERY EUROPEAN TOUCH

A

German national of Greek origin from a very cosmopolitan family, Philipp Economou was the first of his family to actually be brought up in Greece and it was in Athens that he started his hospitality career…almost by accident. Philipp explains: “I began my career with IHG [the InterCon’s parent company] 24 years ago in Athens by coincidence. I had a phone call at home that there was a vacancy on the front desk and I applied, but my passion had always been F&B – I had worked part-time in kitchens and waiting tables while I was studying.” That phone call led to seven years with IHG in the Greek capital before he made a move to Spain, finally in his beloved food and beverage. Four years later he was on the move again, this time to the very glamorous InterContinental Carlton Cannes – where they do the opening of the Cannes Film Festival. After further stints in Madrid and Miami – at a “690-room business monster hotel” – the hotelier headed to the Middle East, with his first posting in Abu Dhabi. He says, honestly: “At first I didn’t like it, I wondered ‘what on earth have I done’, it was a real culture shock.” But he soon fell in love with the region and, 10 years later, he is still here. After stints with Holiday Inn “a major 32 January 2019

I want to develop the current talents we have in-house. I didn’t come to make big changes but to lead people in a new direction.” change as I had always worked in luxury, but it is a great brand and still has a place in my heart” and opening a new property in Fujairah, then came the opportunity for a move to Bahrain. Philippe says: “The Regency InterContinental is a hotel with a lot of history, it has been here almost 37 years. It’s quite well known in the market but it has been left a little bit on the side, not really living up to its potential. We’re planning a revamp, starting with repositioning the Club rooms.” The Club rooms, which are particularly aimed at businesses travellers, will be extended across two floors with the Club Lounge being moved away from the accommodation.

Philipp also has plans to build on one of the hotel’s recognised strengths – not surprisingly, given his stated passion – the food and beverage department will move into the spotlight. He explains: “The hotel already has a good reputation in this area, so I want to build on that. For example, with pop-up restaurants and visiting chefs – watch this space for exciting future developments.” And he also wants to build on the overall destination experience adding: “Everyone talks about the market being down, that’s true but we can’t change the market. A room is a room and a restaurant is a restaurant, it’s the quality of the service you provide that counts. Luxury must be something comfortable, not overstated. I want to develop the current talents we have in-house. I didn’t come to make big changes but to lead people in a new direction. “I want to get people engaged with the property so that they learn something new. And, when I talk about people, that’s what I love about this job – I want to curate experiences for people, whether guests or colleagues.” And, since his role is as IHG’s area general manager taking in Crowne Plaza, though it is under different ownership, he will also have a wider function in increasing the synergy with which the two properties work together. www.bahrainthismonth.com

interview

16-year-old Bahraini singer Hala Al Turk tells Adnan Sipra about how she deals with the pressures of being a young celebrity, her musical influences and her love for Ariana Grande.

Hala Al Turk

EVERYDAY TEEN TO STAGE STAR

M

ax Fashion, the region’s leading value fashion brand, hosted a special meet and greet with teenage pop star Hala Al Turk, who endorses the Women’s Young collection, at the newly opened store in Oasis Mall-Juffair. Max Fashion’s range of apparel is popular among millennials and Generation Z customers and its collaboration with the Bahraini sensation reflects the value fashion brand’s distinct identity. When Hala bounded onto the stage, an expectant crowd came alive. Pre-teen children milling close to the stage shrieked with excitement, jumping up and down as the singer smiled and waved at them. From the floor above, dozens of people joined in, chanting her name. Hala became an instant celebrity in 2011, when, at age nine, she reached the semi-final of reality television talent show, Arabs’ Got Talent. The crowd erupted when, after posing with the winners of the More Promotion carried out by Oasis Mall-Juffair, she launched into a rendition of one of her hits. Since it was December 16, Bahrain’s National Day, little children and adults alike brandished Bahraini flag replicas, waving them happily as she worked the audience into a frenzy. At an interview, just half an hour earlier, the young singer was a different person – an everyday teenager sitting with her mother and manager. Her transformation, when she ran up the steps to the screams of the crowd, was akin to Beyonce’s well-documented Sasha Fierce persona – gone was the soft-spoken child who admitted to being shy, replaced, instead, by a confident young woman, prancing www.bahrainthismonth.com

Endorsing a brand like Max Fashion is an honour. Their collections are so cool, so funky, so classy for those my age.”

Fankids

from one end of the stage to the other to whip each section of the crowd into raptures. During the interview, she spoke so softly that I had to strain to hear her words as she talked of the difficulties of being a celebrity at such a young age; how she shrugs off negativity – all too prevalent in today’s world ruled by social media – by not letting it affect her; how her education initially suffered because of her celebrity status but, that, because of support from family and her school itself, she is doing well in her studies; and how she focuses on staying in touch with her fan base “because, if not for them, I wouldn’t be at

this level.” Hala sings both in Arabic and English and has also dabbled in acting. In fact, earlier this year, she jetted off to Kuwait to act in a play, returning to Bahrain to sit her exams during a hiatus, then flying back to Kuwait to resume her role. Endorsing a brand like Max Fashion, she said, “is an honour. Their collections are so cool, so funky, so classy for those my age.” She listed Selena Gomez and Demi Lovato among her musical influences but became more animated as she described Ariana Grande as “the best of them all.” Her eyes sparkling as she explained that she had learnt “so much” from Grande. “To be honest,” she said, “I don’t know how to explain this. She’s something very big to me and I pray all night just to meet her and just say hi and just take a picture with her because I love her so much.” At this point, Hala Al Turk, with over 3.6 million followers of her own on Instagram; who has performed to packed audiences across the Middle East and who, as would be evidenced, just half an hour later, has her breathless fans swooning when she makes an appearance on stage, sounded just like any other ordinary teenager. But she is anything but ordinary. As her concert ended after the third song of her set, she was whisked away by her security before the din of the resounding applause had even begun to die down. interview

We chat to Nour Suliman, CEO of DHL Express MENA, who is celebrating 40 years with the business.

Nour Suliman

LIZ O’REILLY

FROM COURIER TO CEO You are celebrating 40 years with DHL. Please tell us about the organisation as it was when you first joined. I joined DHL in 1978, a couple of years after the company had set up its first distribution centre in Bahrain. Back then, DHL had only just started to expand its footprint in this region, with offices in Bahrain, Saudi, Egypt and the UAE. In Bahrain we only had six employees, today we have 1,000. We have definitely come a long way since then, from a small courier company to the express and logistics giant that DHL is today. What was your starting role and what led you into the field of international logistics? I started off as a young flying courier. It was a great opportunity at the time to join an international company that was just setting up in the region. The job seemed interesting and indeed it was; there was a lot of flying around the world, meeting different people of varying backgrounds. I found that to be very fulfilling. The company took good care of its people, it always was a great place to work and it truly invested in its employees, grooming its talent to grow and develop in logistics. How did you progress within the company? I loved my job. I was very ambitious and always pushed myself to do better. I held multiple positions in various DHL Express divisions and countries while climbing the corporate ladder. I worked hard and accumulated experience across the logistics spectrum, working in junior and managerial roles from customer service to commercial. The turning point in my career was 34 January 2019

The turning point in my career was when I took on the role of country manager for DHL Express Bahrain.” when I took on the role of country manager for DHL Express Bahrain, after which I moved to manage our office in Saudi Arabia, a challenging move considering the size and scale of the market. The next quantum leap was my appointment as CEO of DHL’s regional operations. Can you tell us about the most significant developments you have experienced? DHL was the first to bring logistics services to the MENA region in 1976, and has pioneered the industry ever since, helping to shape logistics and pave the way for industry development. In the past 42 years the company has been an integral driver of the region’s industry growth. We have invested heavily in enhancing DHL’s reach, capabilities, capacities, technologies and fleet size to boost the region’s emergence as a significant global logistics hub. Today DHL has grown to be the largest express and logistics provider in the MENA region; and has a strong presence in 19 countries, over 160 dedicated domestic and international weekly flights, a fleet of approximately 1,900 vehicles and a staff count

of 5,700 employees. We hold an impressive 80,000-plus client base and process 32 million shipments annually. What is your personal management philosophy? I believe in an ‘open door’ policy and I am a phone call away from everyone that works with me; I expect the same approach to be implemented by my senior management and all managerial teams. Within your field, you must have experienced some amusing situations in your 40 years. Can you tell us any? The one that comes to mind is when I went running after a plane on the tarmac. I had a shipment to get to Saudi and as I waited for the plane I realised that it had already started to taxi out so I started running next to it on the tarmac. Luckily for me the captain decided to stop and let me on. They were simpler times back then. Please tell us something about yourself that’s not common knowledge. Perhaps, if I had not gone into logistics, I would have pursued a career as a football player. I am also an avid writer and, back in the day, I used to write short columns for the local newspapers.

VAT Discussed In advance of the imposition of VAT in the Kingdom, the Bahrain British Business Forum (BBBF) and expert consultancy, BDO, hosted a meeting to discuss the issue featuring BDO Bahrain’s VAT specialists, Smita Roy, BDO partner (Leader VAT), and Marlon Appleton, BDO senior manager (VAT), as the guest speakers. More than 130 BBBF members heard their presentation which offered the latest information from the Ministry of Finance about the implementation of VAT in Bahrain. The presenters also shared their collective experience from the implementation and practice of VAT in Saudi Arabia, the UAE and the UK. Smita Roy said: “It is critical for businesses in Bahrain to understand that VAT will impact every aspect of business from transactions, processes, documentation to people; and it is vital they be ready and prepared for the change.” “To avoid many of the pitfalls experienced by businesses in Saudi Arabia and the UAE, it is important for businesses to have an action plan for VAT readiness to ensure a smooth transition to VAT. The readiness measures should be effectively deployed to avoid last-minute chaos,” added Marlon Appleton.

New System at TRA

Largest Chinese Expo The region’s largest Chinese trade expo is coming to the Kingdom this year thanks to a partnership between Bahrain Tourism and Exhibitions Authority (BTEA) and Hilal Conference and Exhibitions (HCE). Taking place from September 24-26, the event will see more than 60 companies from China displaying their latest offerings at the China Heavy Machinery and Industry Exhibition which is being organised on behalf of Silk Road Steps Committee in China by Beijing Sea Level Science and Technology Company. Tradearabia.com reported that Jubran Abdulrahman, HCE managing director, signed the co-operation agreement with Zhang Ming, secretary general, Silk Road Steps to Eco-Culture Committee. He said: “Much of the credit for this 38 January 2019

major event is as a result of the hard work of Team Bahrain and all the parties involved deserve the credit for this coup. “The Bahrain Ambassador in China, HE Dr Anwar Yusuf Abdulla Al Abdulla, cannot be praised enough for his determined approach in putting the Kingdom at the forefront of the Silk Road Steps Committee for their GCC promotion strategy. “The invaluable work of the EDB China office has attracted 600 companies from China to the kingdom ensuring that the business case of Bahrain is firmly in the minds of China’s business community; and the BTEA promotion of Bahrain as a MICE centre at global events helps to re-endorse brand Bahrain for the MICE sector.”

The Telecommunication Regulatory Authority (TRA) has launched an integrated complaint and inquiry management system in order to maintain effective communication between TRA, consumers and telecommunications service providers. The system includes a consumer portal where ccustomers can easily log in and submit details of their complaint and supporting documents. The system also provides faster options for registration via email (Gmail) or Facebook account, as all complaint and inquiry processes are managed through this portal besides the automised connection between TRA and the services providers. TRA’s acting manager of Consumer Affairs, Amna Alghatam, said: “One of TRA’s priorities is to expand communications channels and enhance the quality of services provided to consumers. This new system is a translation of the TRA’s strategic objectives aimed at enabling consumers to continuously and effectively communicate with TRA.”

MOTORING

this month

A Sporty Upgrade, p42

My Life in Cars DICK POTTER Further to last month’s article – you all remember last month’s article, right? Well, maybe just a quick update for the absent-minded then – car safety stemming, largely, from car-racing innovations. I did say I’d return to the subject and, being a man of my word.... So, without further ado, here’s a few more that have been introduced: Transmissions – used to translate a car's engine power into the wheels; a manual method is slow and an automatic method takes driver control away. Hello directdrive gear boxes. These are clutch-free and allow a driver to change quickly and correctly. You can see paddle shifts in cars now that also stop you changing non-sequentially, which could be a disaster when racing. Tyres – a component of our cars that we generally don't think much about, perhaps until you get a flat? Yet, it's the only thing between you and the road. The design of grooves and materials used to maintain road contact and control in racing cars has filtered down to our cars also. Brakes – engineers have had to design brakes to bring a racing car from extreme speeds to full stop. This has evolved from drum brakes to disc brakes which are easier to keep cool. Today, most production cars have either two- or four-disc brakes. Air intake – engines need to breathe and, quite like Usain Bolt, performers need to breath better and quicker; more efficiently basically. Hence the introduction of super chargers, turbo units and RAM intakes now found in our cars. www.bahrainthismonth.com

Dual overhead cam shafts (DOHC) – you all knew that’s what (DOHC) meant, right? Car engine valves open and shut allowing air in to burn the fuel. Cam shafts control this. Install a second cam shaft and you burn twice the fuel. Hey presto, improved performance. This too is appearing in more production cars now. Exterior design – it doesn't matter if a race car doesn't look good, as long as it performs. But, because we like the smooth contours, fins and foils that originated in air-tunnel testing by racing engineers, they're now more evident in production car designs also. It never ceases to amaze me when I see a car at the traffic lights, the ones that actually stop there that is, boasting super-sleek lines. I assume, it’s got to be the latest offering from, Mercedes, for example. I then see it’s actually a lower cost manufacturer. Well done you manufacturers then! Materials – speed improves with a low weight-topower ratio. The, albeit slow, introduction then of carbon fibre, titanium and other light and strong composite materials from racing cars to our kind of everyday cars improves speed and reduces fuel consumption. Lastly, and a bit of fun, in a Porsche, the key ignition, unlike in other cars, is on the left of the steering wheel. This is so the driver could, at the beginning of the race, fire up the engine and bang it into gear simultaneously. This was part of race heritage at a time when every second counted to get off the grid. So, there you have it. You didn't know that your trusty old everyday set of wheels was actually a race car in disguise, now did you?! Happy Motoring. dick@redhousemarketing.com

A Joint Venture? Rumour has it that automotive giants BMW and Daimler are to form a partnership to develop future vehicle platforms, batteries and autonomous vehicle technology. Unnamed insiders cite that the discussions are still in the early stages, and the automakers would keep any component sharing to parts that aren’t brand specific, according to Automotive News Europe. This is not the first time that the two companies have joined hands together with a better vision. In 2017, the two automakers, along with Ford and VW, started working together to create a fast-charging network across Europe, starting with Germany, Austria and Norway. In 2016, they also teamed up with telecom companies to set the specs for 5G mobile networks.

Electric Racing Power

A Sporty Upgrade

The all-new Nissan Leaf Nismo RC, an electric race car with more than double the maximum power and torque output of its predecessor, was recently unveiled in Tokyo. With dual electric motors, all-wheel drive and an aggressive, restyled body shape, the purpose-built car demonstrates how Nissan’s electric vehicle technology can deliver exciting yet quiet, zero-emission power. The two electric motors at opposite ends of the chassis produce 120kw each and an astounding 640Nm of instant torque to the wheels. They double the maximum power and the torque output of the previous Leaf Nismo RC, which was introduced in 2011. A long hood and Nissan’s signature V-motion grille highlight the totally restyled front end. The distinctive silver-and-black paint scheme with red accents makes the car seem to be in constant motion, even when sitting still at the starting line. The all-new vehicle will be on display at Formula E races, and major shows and events around the world.

A New Launch

Porsche has expanded its range of compact SUVs with the addition of the powerful Macan S. The new model from the sports car manufacturer features a new three-litre V6 turbocharged petrol engine with a gasoline particulate filter. It delivers 354hp and has a maximum torque of 480Nm, representing an increase of 14hp and 20Nm compared with the previous model. With twin-scroll technology, the exhaust gas flows are continuously fed to the turbine wheel as separate streams significantly reducing any charge cycle disadvantages. The further-developed combustion chamber geometry with a central injector promotes 42 January 2019

efficient fuel mixture preparation. The new Porsche Communication Management (PCM) which features a 10.9-inch, full-HD touchscreen, comes as standard and includes navigation, mobile phone connection, two audio interfaces and intelligent voice control. The optional GT sports steering wheel, originating from the 911, bolsters the sporty interior design of the Macan S. The new Macan S can accelerate from 0-100km/h in just 5.1 seconds, which is 0.1 seconds quicker than its predecessor. The vehicle’s top speed is 254km/h, whilst the fuel consumption (NEDC-correlated) is 8.9 l/100km.

The Saudi International Motor Show, recently held in Jeddah, saw the Middle East launch of the all-new 2019 Haval H6. The new vehicle boasts the latest safety technology, including adaptive cruise control, forward collision warning and autonomous emergency braking. It also features a 360-degree camera and semi-automatic self-parking. Speaking during the media tour, before the exhibition officially opened its doors to the public, Faisal Al-Quraishi, chairman of the distributor’s parent company, said: “The brand-new Haval H6 continues the tremendous presence and power of the Haval brand. Due to its unique and allnew aesthetic design, technological advances and intelligent configurations, newly designed ‘armor safety system’ and the luxuriously comfortable ‘fluid texture’ cabin, the H6 completely surpasses its rivals in the same class.” www.bahrainthismonth.com

An Electric Debut The all-electric Jaguar I-Pace recently made its Middle Eastern debut in Riyadh. As the key highlight in the first ever Formula E and the Jaguar I-Pace eTrophy Championship series, VIPs and media representatives from across the region gathered during the Jaguar Racing Charge event where they mingled with Panasonic Jaguar Racing’s drivers, Nelson Piquet Jr and Mitch Evans, as well as drivers from the local Saudi team, Ahmed Bin Khanen and Bandar Alesavi, who are racing in the eTrophy series. Bruce Robertson, managing director, Jaguar Land Rover MENA region said: ”

Limited Edition Launch The Jaguar I-Pace represents so much more than another new model for us. It is the trailblazer in the global EV revolution of the car industry, setting the standards for other manufacturers to follow.”

Past, Present and Future BTM motoring correspondent, Dick Potter, checked out a very special event highlighting all things Audi. I have always liked Audi, from saloons to sports to offroad SUVs, they all exude quality and stylish looks. So, when I was invited to a Behbehani Brothers’ jazzy presentation function at the new Audi Centre, advertised as Bahrain has gone Audi, it was an easy reply of “Yes please”. ‘Jazzy’ it was, with a great audiovisual display generating a palpable buzz about the place, there was a visual countdown on a huge screen and as zero clicked the general manager eloquently and with the showmanship of a ringmaster (without a whip though) introduced a smorgasbord of Audis driven across the spot-lit stage. All glided and the beautiful, sleek R8 roared culminating with the gorgeous 2019 Audi Q8 TFSI which continues receiving kudos and high fives in leading media reviews. It was a great night which also showed off the jaw-dropping and successful FIA Formula E race car. And further, the AV presentation stated that by 2025, one in three Audis is planned to be electric powered ...impressive stuff indeed. www.bahrainthismonth.com

The order book has been opened for the 50-vehicle limited run of the Nissan GT-R50 by Italdesign – the ultimate expression of the GT-R. The car’s exterior is virtually unchanged from the prototype first shown in July at the Goodwood Festival of Speed in England. Pricing of the NISMO-tuned 720PS GT-R by Italdesign will start at 990,000 euros. Nissan collaborated with Turin, Italy-based Italdesign to create the model, based on the latest Nissan GT-R NISMO, in commemoration of the 50th anniversaries of the GT-R in 2019 and Italdesign in 2018. While the prototype vehicle was finished in a special gray with gold accents, customers will be able to specify their preferred colour combinations for the production version. They also will be able to choose interior colours and packages. “The reaction from Nissan fans around the world – and potential customers of the GT-R50 – has greatly exceeded our expectations,” said Bob Laishley, global sports car programme director at Nissan. “These 50 cars, which celebrate 50 years of the GT-R as well as 50 years of Italdesign, will be rolling tributes to Nissan’s engineering leadership and rich sports car heritage for a long time to come.”

Motorsport enthusiasts and car fanatics alike got a major treat at the recent Bapco Bahrain GT Festival, as one of the world’s leading sports car manufacturers, McLaren Automotive, unveiled its new 720S GT3 at the event. The hotly anticipated racer was shown off on the 5.412-kilometre circuit and displayed in the paddock. The McLaren 720S GT3 is based on the acclaimed 720S from the Super Series, and is being readied for its competition debut in 2019, when it will be eligible for all global GT3 grids. The 720S GT3 is expected to compete in this year’s Blancpain GT Series and is the successor to the brand’s 650S GT3 model, which clinched the Endurance Cup drivers’ and team titles in 2016. Mahonia

Exquisite

EATERIES

With the festive season over, January can feel a little flat. Why not perk up the winter season with trip to one of the Kingdom’s outstanding eateries. For a small island, Bahrain certainly punches above its weight in terms of fine-dining and Michelin associations. We’ve rounded up some of the tastiest options. Plant Cafe

Michelin Connections Four Seasons Bahrain Bay is home to two restaurants with superstar-chef backing – CUT by Wolfgang Puck and re/Asian Cuisine by Wolfgang Puck. As the names suggest, they’re both under the umbrella of chef Wolfgang, who is best known for his Beverly Hills eatery Spago (which had a pop-up in Bahrain last year) and for catering the Oscars. Chef Wolfgang’s team have all been trained in his worldwide restaurants and he makes regular visits to keep an eye on things. Rasoi by Vineet at The Gulf Hotel was the island’s first fine-dining outlet operated by a Michelin-starred chef. Vineet Bhatia was the first Indian ever to gain one of the coveted culinary stars for his London joint-venture restaurant, Zaika, back in 2001. He later went out on his own to launch the first Rasoi in Chelsea in 2004. And though that is now closed, he has several other restaurants around the globe. His food was described by the Evening Standard as “cutting-edge Indian cooking in tapas-style portions.” Also at The Gulf, the latest Michelin-starred chef to throw his toque into the Bahrain ring is another Italian, Giancarlo Perbellini. During 2018, the hotel’s much-loved Italian outlet got a complete upgrade to relaunch as La Pergola by Perbellini and a brand-new menu, created by the chef. He visits the island regularly showing 46 January 2019

off the skills that have made him one of Italy’s most celebrated pastry chefs. A German with a passion for Italian cuisine, chef Oliver Glowig works closely with Vencenzo Nigro, who is chef de cuisine at The RitzCarlton, Bahrain’s Primavera. Chef Oliver has two Michelin stars for his restaurant in Rome and he brings that same flair to Bahrain during regular visits during which he conducts cooking classes and works on keeping the Primavera menu fresh and up-to-date.

CUT by Wolfgang Puck

The Visitors The Kingdom’s kitchens are no strangers to celebrity chefs. The Gulf Hotel has welcomed both Takagi Kazuo and Wout Bru. The Capital Club has a programme of hosting members of the world’s Top 50 Chefs, most recently presenting chef Valentino Palmisano for a twoday visit. And the InterContinental Regency’s new GM plans to get in on the act soon with pop-up restaurants and VIP culinary visitors. There’s More Mahonia burst onto the dining scene in April last year with just a handful of tables and a 16-course degustation menu prepared by a team of 40 chefs, who treat every dish as a work of art. There is a smaller seven-course degustation menu and an à la carte option all prepared under the watchful eye of chef Herve www.bahrainthismonth.com

Maki

Pronzato, who has himself worked in various Michelin-starred establishments. The food is described as “outstanding” but, beware, it’s certainly not cheap and it’s rumoured there’s a waiting list. My Café, the brainchild of Sawsan Baluch, who also launched Mahonia, is anything but a café. Don’t expect sandwiches and quick eats. Here you will find an eclectic and full menu with a great range of grapes alongside. Maki is in a class of its own when it comes to Japanese fusion, thanks to founders, Oliver and Amer Zeitoon. Oliver is a passionate foodie who had been experimenting with Japanese dishes for years before they opened their first small restaurant in Kuwait. Since then, the brand has spread across the region and even to London’s Soho. Diners at Maki are guaranteed new and exciting menu additions on virtually every visit including great veggie and vegan options.

La Mer

www.bahrainthismonth.com

Fishbone by Chef Susy Massetti is a relatively new entry to the Kingdom’s finedining scene, but when you see the name that’s attached to it, there can be no doubting that it belongs in this list. As one might expect, the menu is 75 per cent fish and seafood with, in chef Susy’s words, “enough other dishes to keep everyone happy”. And the emphasis is on good, fresh, local produce. Still on the subject of fish, but not purely so, La Mer at the Sofitel Bahrain Zallaq has a great menu in a fabulous setting overlooking the blue waters of The Gulf. Set in a glass tower on a promontory, it has an extensive menu which is heavy on seafood but with more than enough to keep non-fish eaters happy. And if you fancy a lighter nibble, head downstairs to Tapas, which does exactly what its name says, and does it very well. Mirai has been at the heart of the Adliya dining scene in Block 338 for several years and its slick décor, pared-back aesthetic and authentic Japanese menu have earned it a deserved reputation for culinary excellence. Plant-based cuisine might not easily spring to mind when one considers fine dining, but at Plant Café, that’s exactly what you get. Dishes that are fully vegan, frequently gluten-free, thoroughly nutritious and usually quite beautiful. Having risen from the ashes of a disastrous fire a few years ago, Oliveto reopened in a gorgeous, futuristic building in Adliya and quickly regained its favoured spot among the Kingdom’s foodies. With serious Italian cuisine

– simple food, superbly created from the finest ingredients – and amazing surroundings, you truly won’t go wrong here. We wouldn’t usually add a chain restaurant to a fine-dining round-up but Teatro by Rotana is a firm favourite with anyone who’s eaten at any of the UAE venues. This gives our local branch, Teatro Downtown, quite a lot to live up to. It manages admirably with a cool bar area before you enter the restaurant and a range of innovations running alongside the much-loved Teatro staples. Another chain that deserves a mention is Meat Co where the glasses make a satisfyingly crystal-like clink, the linens are crisp, the cellar extensive and the meats absolutely marvelous. Top all that with waiting staff who are not only knowledgeable but display a great sense of fun and you have a fine-dining eatery that feels relaxed and sociable. Honourable Mentions The above are some of the most notable finedining venues in the Kingdom but there are plenty of others to choose from. Both Nirvana and Plums at The Ritz-Carlton, Bahrain, are multi-award winners. Bushido has a loyal following who love its menu with ingredients flown in from Japan. The Foundry is all industrial chic with slavish addiction to seasonal produce. And Florence La Maison Mediterraneenne is an extremely pretty, reasonably-priced option that holds Trip Advisor’s Certificate of Excellence. We could go on… January 2019 47

AN INDIAN CELEBRATION

NEWEST BRUNCH IN TOWN Having just opened at the end of 2018, Irish bar, McGettigan’s, has launched the island’s newest Friday brunch promising an impressive buffet, the venue’s signature roasts as well as unlimited dishes from the extensive à la carte menu such as eggs benny and fluffy blueberry pancakes. Brunch runs from noon to 4pm and costs BD30++ including selected beverages. There’s also an unlimited drinks package from 5pm to 8pm for BD20++. Call 17 007-404.

Tanatan, the Indian eatery at the Ramee Grand Hotel & Spa, is well-known for providing a delectable fine-dining experience against the backdrop of a live ghazal. This month, to coincide with India’s Republic Day, chef Anup’s mouth-watering flavours can be sampled at the Awadhi Food Festival from January 21-30 with a four-course set menu priced at only BD 12, as well as for a tasty dinner buffet on Republic Day, January 26. Call 17 111-973.

BREAKING FAST AT THE K HOTEL - LIZ O’REILLY A chef who understands the concept of eggs over-easy – ie “flipped just long enough to solidify the white, leaving the yolk runny for toast dipping, rather than bullet hard” – seems to be a rare find amongst all the culinary geniuses on this island. So, a trip round the corner for a breakfast meeting at The K Hotel was a welcome revelation; my only concern being that the said eggs were on my companion’s plate rather than mine. Not to worry though, my own choise of eggs, scrambled with onions, peppers, tomatoes and cheese, were equally

delicious in their fluffy, gooey yumminess. In fact, the whole buffet, which includes something to satisfy just about every palate, including 11 different varieties of cheese, a huge and infinitely tempting selection of croissants, breads and pastries and some dishes you might expect to find as main courses at dinner, was impressive all round. Not surprisingly, I didn’t have room to try it all. But at just BD5 per person, that’s the perfect excuse for a return visit soon. Call 17 360-000.

Sofitel Bahrain invites you to an exclusive pastry affair at the Lobby Lounge on January 6 at 3pm. Super Smash Bros. Ultimate Verdict: A superbly fun arcade fighter. Rating:

What is it?

Legendary game worlds and fighters collide in the ultimate showdown — a new entry in the Super Smash Bros. series for the Nintendo Switch. New fighters, like Inkling from the Splatoon series and Ridley from the Metroid series, make their series debut, alongside every Super Smash Bros. fighter in the series ... EVER! Faster combat, new items, new attacks, new defensive options, and more will keep the battle raging whether you’re at home or on the go.

Gameplay

With 74 fighters, 108 stages, nearly 1,300 Spirit characters to collect, and a single-player Adventure mode that takes 24 hours of playtime to beat, Super Smash Bros. Ultimate offers far more in a single package than any of its four predecessors. This latest edition does exactly what it does best: successfully pleases two crowds that are usually at odds; those who are seeking the pure, chaotic joy of an eight-player button-mashing brawl and those who prefer tense matches of hard-fought, high-level skill. It’s also remarkably easy to jump in, choose your favourite character and just start fighting, since it doesn’t take much more

Just Cause 4

Set in the fictional South American world of Solis, Just Cause 4 takes the series of incredible destruction and unique physics to a whole new level with the introduction of tornadoes and other extreme weather events. Rico Rodriguez returns with his trademark parachute, wingsuit and, of course, his grapple hook, now enhanced with new functionality and fully customisable. Solis has four distinct biomes: Rainforest, Grasslands, Alpine and Desert. With each biome offering its own individual, fully simulated weather event, players will have a unique experience as they traverse this deep, diverse world. 56 January 2019

than the control stick and two buttons to have access to most of a fighter’s moveset.

Graphics

In one-on-one fights or when only two fighters remain, there’s a seriously epic freeze-frame zoom effect when you land a hit that will almost certainly result in a KO. That alone makes big smash attacks even more satisfying, and makes it even clearer when an opponent actually has a chance to recover from a hard hit or not. This is a truly fantastic-looking game – a noticeable step up from the last one – and it doesn’t feel trimmed down at all when played mobile.

VERDICT:

Site: http://www.tunefind.com/ Rating:

A great tool for those often forgetting what the theme tune to their favourite programme was.

What is it?

Ever wondered what that amazing or emotional song that you just heard in a movie was? Or vice-versa, which show a certain theme tune belonged to? This website contains a database of thousands of themes and movies to pinpoint the song or show you are looking for.

The Good

The soundtrack listings are all prepared from user contributions. Even more importantly, users can validate a soundtrack as belonging to the show or not, so you only ever get accurate information unlike edit-byanyone websites.

The Bad

The selection of TV soundtrack information veers towards the more recent ones on the air, which is occasionally counter-productive as it’s more often than not the TV theme tunes from your childhood or distant past that you’ve forgotten and want to find.

technologyapps

Apps Review BTM brings you the low-down on the latest and greatest apps on the market.

App: Facetune Rating: Verdict: One of the best apps to touch up your photos. What is it?

We live in the ‘selfie era’, and research has proven that mobile phones are the source of the lion’s share of all the world’s photography, with self-portraits on a laser-targeted mission to become the most common type of photo. As such, Facetune’s interface features a ton of options to customise your selfies. When you start, you see a mostly plain white field with buttons across the bottom for canvas, whiten (for teeth), smoothing, details, reshape, and others for a total of 11 options.

The Good

The interface is extremely user-friendly. When you choose one of the tools, a mini-tutorial page on its use shows up first, including short videos that demonstrate the tools. This means you always know exactly what you’re doing and can choose what features to enhance. There are undo and redo buttons too, which seem like obvious additions but are missing from so many similar apps. No more discarding an hour’s work because you accidentally gave yourself a receding hairline!

The Bad

The worst aspect of the app is a lack of tilt option. There is only 90-degree rotation, which is annoying if you want your angles just right. Red-eye correction is also quite fiddly and requires a delicate touch rather than just an automatic button-press.

App: Star Walk 2

App: Microsoft Word Flow Keyboard

A rebooted and much-improved version of the premier astronomy app. Star Walk 2 shows a starry sky on your phone or tablet screen in whatever direction you are pointing the device. This is true for day or night; during the day, you can see the Sun and the stars and planets portrayed in a twilight-blue sky. At night, the stars are visible against a black background. To navigate, you pan your view on screen by swiping in any direction, zoom out by pinching the screen, or zoom in by stretching it. There is also a clock interface to travel thousands of years through time to see how the heavens move.

For those who have a nightmare with smartphone keyboards and wage a constant war with Autocorrect, this app is for you. The best part of the Word Flow Keyboard is that it lets you enter words with shape/gesture writing, which is continuously sliding your finger through the letters of a word, which is then predicted by the keyboard and entered. You don’t have to type spaces with this kind of entry, and World Flow shows the path of your finger swiping with a dotted green line. The idea is that your muscle memory starts to actually learn the shape of words, rather than the spelling, for super-fast text entry. It also has an arc mode for onethumbed typing.

The Prophet Speaks – Van Morrison What’s the story?

The Prophet Speaks is Morrison’s fourth outing in 18 months. It follows the same musical template begun with 2017’s Roll with the Punches and Versatile in juxtaposing originals with vintage blues, R&B, and jazz covers. This particular set also continues the association he developed with organist and trumpeter Joey DeFrancesco’s fine quartet — illustrated so ably on the jazz-heavy You’re Driving Me Crazy.

Worth a listen?

The Prophet Speaks digs deeper into blues and R&B than its predecessor, but sounds equally loose, joyous, and spontaneous. Its 14 tracks contain six new originals sequenced among eight skilfully performed standards. Clocking in at over an hour, The Prophet Speaks breezes through its run-time with memorable performances and joyous vibes. This is a late-career surge that is all the more remarkable because Morrison really seems to be enjoying himself — he continues to hunger after the music that inspired his vocation in the first place.

Verdict: Another great album from the icon. Shorts

Skins - XXXTentacion

AMOR – Sinking into a Miracle

This posthumous collection offers a jumble of ideas, fleeting emotions, and stream-ofconsciousness freestyles, centred on the swirling darkness within the late rapper. Wading through inessential blips, there are a handful of worthwhile nuggets on which to focus. While the woozy Guardian Angel features an impressive, breathless flow, the disturbing Train food is a discomfiting nightmare that rides a repeated piano chord over sounds of mass transit.

Glaswegian quartet AMOR channel their various backgrounds and influences into a surprisingly cohesive, focused form of avant-disco. None of the tracks are longer than 10 minutes, and the group experiment more in terms of the production, with a few dubby effects and abstract elements popping up, including the faint vocals moaning in the background of Full Fathom Future, or the trumpet blurts and low-in-themix frazzled synths during Glimpses Across Thunder. The rhythms don’t seem quite as bass-heavy, and they slightly deviate from the standard disco shuffle.

Other People’s Stuff – John Mellencamp John Mellencamp gives away the intent of Other People’s Stuff with its titles: it’s a collection of covers, 10 songs recorded between 1993 and 2018. Some of these songs come from tribute albums or soundtracks Gambling Bar Room Blues is taken from a 1997 tribute to Jimmie Rodgers, I Don’t Know Why I Love You was pulled from 2003’s An Interpretation of Stevie Wonder’s Songs - but most come from Mellencamp’s studio albums. Taken as a whole, the album can be read as a summation of what Mellencamp loves about America, which amounts to a political statement in 2018. www.bahrainthismonth.com

Fancy some chill-time at home? Check out these latest TV series to hit your screens.

Narcos: Mexico

Maniac

Narcos: Mexico explores the origins of the modern war on drugs by going back to a time when the Mexican trafficking world was a loose and disorganised confederation of small-time independent cannabis growers and dealers. The series charts the rise of the Guadalajara Cartel in the 1980s as Félix Gallardo (Diego Luna) takes the helm, unifying traffickers in order to build an empire. When DEA agent Kiki Camarena (Michael Peña) moves his wife and young son from California to Guadalajara to take on a new post, he quickly learns that his assignment will be more challenging than he ever could have imagined.

Annie Landsberg and Owen Milgrim are two strangers who are drawn to the late stages of a mysterious pharmaceutical trial. Each has a different reason for participating — she is disaffected and aimless, fixated on broken relationships with her mother and sister, while he has struggled throughout his life with a disputed diagnosis of schizophrenia. The radical treatment, using pills that the inventor claims can repair the mind, draws Annie and Owen and 10 other subjects into a three-day drug trial that they’re told will permanently solve all of their problems. Unfortunately, things don’t go as planned.

The Romanoffs

The Dangerous Book for Boys

Emmy-winning producer Matthew Weiner created this anthology series that tells stories of people who believe that they are descendants of a Russian royal family. Each episode takes place in a new location — with filming occurring on three continents — with a new cast. Among the actors appearing in the hour-long instalments are Aaron Eckhart, Amanda Peet, Diane Lane, Kathryn Hahn, Noah Wyle, Christina Hendricks and John Slattery.

The McKenna family is trying to cope with the untimely passing of Patrick, the family patriarch and a whimsical inventor who touched many people’s lives. While the family is reeling from his loss, hope appears in the form of The Dangerous Book for Boys, a handbook that Patrick created to help his three sons. The how-to guide for childhood inspires youngest son Wyatt, who reconnects with his father in a fantasy world. While there, Wyatt learns life skills that help him navigate the real world. Chris Diamantopoulos stars in the series in a dual role, playing both Patrick and his twin brother, Terry.

The Rain

The world as we know it has come to an end, due to a rain-carried virus that wiped out nearly everybody in Scandinavia. Six years later, two Danish siblings emerge from the safety of theor bunker. After discovering all remnants of civilisation gone, they join a group of fellow young survivors, and together they head out on a danger-filled quest throughout the abandoned land in search of signs of life. The survivors think they have been set free from societal rules of the past, but they quickly find that even in a postapocalyptic world there is love, jealousy and other coming-of-age dilemmas.

Sneaky Pete

Sneaky Pete crafts a nail-biting drama out of an intricate case of identity theft. Marius Josipovic (Giovanni Ribisi) is a con man recently released from prison who assumes the identity of his former cellmate, Pete Murphy, in order to hide from crime boss Vince Lonigan (Bryan Cranston). The show shines thanks to its ensemble of critically acclaimed actors, including The Americans’ Margo Martindale, and the brilliance of its clever writing.

Fulong Sand Sculpture Festival

66 January 2019

Taiwan proper has more than its share of natural splendour. Mountain ranges with many peaks reaching over 3,000 metres — including East Asia’s highest peak, Jade Mountain (Yushan) — and forested foothills occupy more than half of its area. The island also features volcanic mountains, tablelands, coastal plains and basins. The Diaoyutai Islands, which lie northeast of Taiwan, and a number of islands in the South China Sea are also worthy of a visit. Taiwan is renowned for its fascinating blend of traditional and modern culture. To showcase this, museums have been established across the country, including the National Palace Museum, National Taiwan Museum and National Museum of History. Traditional architecture abounds, not only in the magnificent temples, but also in the many old structures that have been revitalised for use as community centres, cafés, stores and other public spaces. In fact, many aspects of traditional Chinese arts, crafts and customs are better preserved in Taiwan than anywhere else. Traditional tenets of Buddhism, Confucianism and Taoism continue to be well represented in everything from temple celebrations and literature to the visual and performing arts. In addition, visitors can learn about the heritage of the country’s Hakka, Holo and indigenous peoples. From the literary arts and folk festivals to the lively atmosphere of night markets, Taiwan’s traditions are closely intertwined with everyday life, adding to a thriving culture in which the past gives vitality and depth to the present. For dining, the night markets cannot be beaten but also check out both traditional architecture and local culinary combinations in the small alleyways around Jiu Fen Old Street. Must-see sights include the Gold Ecological Park and gold mine in Jinguashi as well as the nearby Golden Waterfall, where the waters shimmer due to the metal elements deposited. Trek to a volcano at Yang Ming Shan National Park and take time for a soak in the milky sulphurous waters of the baths. Also, should you journey to Taiwan in April, don’t miss the amazing Fulong Sand Sculpture Festival. Standing at 510 metres with 101 levels above the ground, Taipei 101, is the tallest building in Taiwan serving as commercial complex and luxury mall. Xinyi District, also known as Taipei Manhattan, is the most iconic shopping zone in the metropolitan area where hotels, cinemas and trendy restaurants abound. In the middle of the National Theatre and Concert Hall sits an internationally renowned landmark, Chiang Kai Shek Memorial Hall. The changing of the guard ceremony is one of the biggest attractions in Taipei. www.bahrainthismonth.com

Beitou hot spring has been famous since Japanese colonial times. The area is surrounded by natural scenic spots and historic monuments like Beitou Museum, Yinsong Building, Beitou Hot Spring Park, and the Folk Museum. Luxurious hot spring hotels can also be found here. Throughout the year, tourists can join various festivities centred on flowers, music, fireworks, lanterns, dragon boats, hot springs, hungry-ghost worship, round-island cycling tours, international marathons and more. No matter when you visit Taiwan or in which season, there are always fun events to be enjoyed! Among them, the most sought after is the Taiwanese Sky Lantern Festival running from February 19 to March 3 at various locations. Taiwan Lantern Festival The Tourism Bureau has been holding the Taiwan Lantern Festival for years to attract visitors and raise the international profile of the cultural attractions of Taiwan. Traditionally, the festival has been celebrated by carrying hand lanterns. The Taiwan Lantern Festival adds a high-tech touch to this traditional custom and brings the event to the international stage. From the themed lantern displays to folk arts and performances, the festival has become a favourite of both locals and visitors. Taipei & Kaohsiung Lantern Festivals Colorful lanterns of all sizes and shapes have always been the main feature of the Lantern Festival, which is celebrated with a grand national festival and major festivals in Taipei and Kaohsiung. The Taipei Lantern Festival is held for several days at the Taipei Expo Park, reaching its peak on the day of the Lantern Festival itself. There are many traditional lanterns, electromechanical lantern displays and large themed lanterns sponsored and designed by different companies. The Kaohsiung Lantern Festival is held along the Love River. During the festival period, both sides of the river as well as Wufu Rd, Heping Rd, Guangzhou St and other thoroughfares have lantern exhibitions. There are also musical performances, helping to throw the whole city into a festive mood. Pingxi Sky Lantern Festival The Pingxi Sky Lantern Festival is one of the most colorful activities. Pingxi is a remote hillside town. In the past, those who worked or farmed in the mountains faced the risk of being robbed or killed, and they used lanterns to inform their families they were safe. The lanterns do not function as signals anymore, but are now used as symbols of peace and good fortune.

Yenshui Fireworks Festival The fireworks display at the God of War Temple in Yanshui, Tainan City, is one of the most popular and anticipated events of the Lantern Festival. AN ARCHAEOLOGICAL GEM Get to know one of Bahrain’s most significant sites, Barbar Temple, with Ann Varghese.

Bahrain has always been surrounded with the air of mystery and intrigue that encircles its archaeological sites. Buried in the Island of Pearls, in the village of Barbar, is another treasure that is a part of the Dilmun culture – The Barbar Temple. Don’t let the skyscrapers fool you, this land holds history in its very soil! The Barbar Temple is actually an amassment of three temples built one atop the other, that was discovered by a Danish archaeological team in 1954. The temples are believed to have been built in 2000BC, and constructed to worship the god Enki, God of Wisdom and Freshwater, and his wife Goddess Nankhur Sak. Of course, this comes as no surprise as water plays a crucial role for the civilisation of this hot climate. This UNESCO World Heritage ‘tentative-listed’ site was built using limestones, and further excavations of the temple led to the discovery of two alters, a natural water spring, several tools, weaponry and small pieces of gold that are now on display at Bahrain National Museum. Temple II which is the most complete of the three, was initially built in local stone, but after an enlargement it was replaced with limestone which may have been carried in from the nearby Jidda island, and was carefully hand-hewn into masonry blocks. Among the standing ruins are a scarred well, a double circular altar and an offering table at the centre of the shrine. According to archaeologists, the double row of plinths that lines both sides of the upper terrace were centred there for cult objects. Extending from the terrace was a ceremonial stairway that led to the shrine where water cult ceremonies took place. Halfway down the stairway is a portal that is sealed today. The terrace is roofed from the portal, so all you see is a tiny doorway that looks as mysterious as it is exciting. The rich natural spring which fills the pool may have been the incentive for the siting of the Barbar Temple. Stone-built channels led water from the shrine to the surrounding fields and gardens. The temples bear strong resemblances to the ancient architecture of temples in Mesopotamia (present day Iraq). The underground shrine is believed to be an abzu (aquifer or waterway) of the God Enki. And if you needed more persuasion to visit, here’s another interesting theory proposed by Eduard Glaser in 1922. The Garden of Eden may have been situated in the Eastern Arabia region, within the Dilmun civilization. Whether this theory is true or not is still up for debate, but come visit the place to get a glimpse into ancient history and answer questions as to what happened to the Dilmun civilisation, like many others of its time. It’s a visit into history. Scan the code for more Bahrain Discoveries.

lifestyleoutandabout It’s that time of year when it’s possible to enjoy the outdoors. Ann Varhese casts the spotlight on some of the island’s best walks.

Bahrain Bay

Walk, Bahrain!

Enjoy the gorgeous view at the Bahrain Bay this winter whether you choose to do so at night or in the mornings. A masterplanned, water-front development that is designed around vibrant neighborhoods and commercial spaces, and based on the unique concept of an island connected by two bridges, forming an inner harbour. This waterfront walkway encircles the island on which Four Seasons is located, and offers a spectacle for the eyes at night. With heat levels dropping, this venue will be home for several events throughout the winter, rife with food festivals, live performances and entertainment.

Marassi Al Bahrain

Soak in the winter sun while walking along the whitesand beach at Diyar Al Muharraq’s Marassi Al Bahrain. You can bask in the rays and get some exercise before devouring a variety of street food that is offered by several food trucks that are parked right at the beach which range from healthy food options to yummy burgers. Experience sea-front living as you join in the regular activities at the beach, or simply enjoy the sunset.

Pearl Trailing

The ancient Greeks referred to Bahrain as Tylos, a place which was “famous for its vast number of pearls.” Walk the historic Pearling Trail of Al Muharraq to witness the magic of the ancient pearl industry for yourself. You can begin at the Bin Matar House and traverse all the way through to see the gold thread-making demonstration at the Kurar House that is a spectacle for the eyes. Ponder for yourself the historic buildings which engaged in the pearl industry long before the discovery of oil in 1932.

Nurana Island

Somewhat off the beaten track since it is tucked away beyond the village of Karranah, Nurana is a manmade island whose original purpose seems to have been forgotten. These days it is a haven for dog walkers, horse riders and the occasional would-be racetrack driver, all making use of the wide-open space. It’s actually two islands connected by a causeway and the second is home to a fleet of small boats and fishermen.

Andalus Garden

Step into one of the Kingdom’s oldest gardens for an evening or an early-morning walk. Rich with greenery and flowers, the garden is structured in such a way so as to give you the best walking experience. The spot offers several small restaurants along the walkway that peovide refreshment at pretty much any hour. It is the perfect spot for families to relish an all-day picnic, or even just to get those legs some exercise. January 2019 69
