THE TEAM
Bahrain This Month June 2018
Publisher and Chairman George F. Middleton Editorial Director Liz O’Reilly Editor Apple Sharma Contributors Behnaz Sanjana, Dick Potter, Bill Grieve
The excitement is building as we enter June with the countdown on to both Eid and the 2018 FIFA World Cup Russia. So, not surprisingly, these are two of our main special features this month. Check out the Ramadan and Eid section for details of ongoing Iftars and Ghabgas as well as information on some of the best Eid celebrations across the island. In the World Cup feature, we’ve not only included that all-important fixtures list but also details of the venues and tents around the Kingdom that will be showing the game. From five-star luxury to some of our favourite bars, it seems there will be atmosphere galore right from kickoff, particularly with our Saudi neighbours in the first match. If you’re not into football, don’t worry as there are plenty of other things going on this month, including the launch of the annual Bahrain Summer Festival, which sees a whole raft of family fun taking place in the beautiful surroundings of Arad Fort. There’s also the extravaganza that is Disney On Ice. This chilly show features characters from some of Disney’s favourite films such as Peter Pan and, quite appropriately, Frozen. You’ll find information on these and lots of other events in our comprehensive Happenings section. And, as always, we’ll be updating late-breaking events throughout the month at www.bahrainthismonth. com so keep your eyes peeled for up-to-the-minute information. Interviews this month include Jerad Bachar of the Economic Development Board, who chatted exclusively about the success of the recent Gateway Gulf forum. And, since we know how much you love your furred and feathered friends, we’ve also caught up with the Birdman of Bahrain, Howard King, and compassionate teen Osian Clark who uses his culinary skills to create cookies for canines. In the motoring section this month, Dick Potter tackles the issue of driving safety with a rundown of some of the most highly-ranked motors in each category. And the lucky Mr Potter also gives his verdict on the latest model from Porsche – a hint, he’s quite a fan. You’ll notice a bit of a change in the form of the new Lifestyle section. All your favourites, from Downtime to Travel, are still there, but we’ve brought them all together to give you an improved reading experience. Manama Theatre Club (British Club Drama Section) has its next show ready for performance: a light-heart comedy, A Little Murder Never Hurt Anybody, by Roy Bernas, in which we meet Julia and Matthew at their New Year’s Eve party. At first glance they seem to have it all, but Matthew actually wants to be rid of his wife Julia so he can enjoy their savings all by himself. He resolves to murder Julia by the end of the year, and, in true dim-witted style, tells her so. She vows to stay alive, and tells him so. Throw in a brainless beauty of a daughter, her bemused fiancé, a bumptious butler and an overly zealous detective — and so begins a year-long match of wits and the witless. Theatre seating tickets are BD6 on June 6 and 9. Bookings at the British Club reception and on the door. Doors open 7.30pm. Curtains up 8pm. Dinner theatre includes a classy three-course meal at BD12

INTERVIEWS
this month Gateway Gulf opens with plenary session on the New Gulf Paradigm
Building an Empire, p36 Jerad Bachar
Gateway Gulf audience
INVESTING IN THE FUTURE LIZ O’REILLY The Economic Development Board’s (EDB’s) Jerad Bachar explains how Gateway Gulf is opening the Kingdom to new investment. The inaugural Gateway Gulf investment forum event took place in May and attracted more than 500 potential international investors as well as the same number of local and regional businesses. Bahrain’s first largescale investment forum, it was established under the patronage of HRH Prince Salman bin Hamad Al Khalifa, the Crown Prince, and conceived by Prince Salman and the EDB chief executive Khalid Al-Rumaihi. Jerad explains: “The focus was to target investors from around the world across various sectors. We had close to 500 investors, many from Asia as well as the US and Europe, and they were looking at projects across the whole economy – logistics, health, education, real estate, tourism and, of course, oil and gas. In total, close to 1,000 people attended and the focus was putting foreign investors together with local businesses and project developers.” A year from inception and six months in the planning, the forum will now run every two years with the next one being in 2020. To get the project off the ground the EDB reached out to a strategic advisory firm. This facilitated access to a wide network of investors, many of whom came to Bahrain for the first time. Jerad adds: “It was a great opportunity for us to speak to investors that we might not have otherwise reached, without this globally focused platform. “The premise was to promote Bahrain as the gateway to the Gulf region – both economically and geographically. Our connection to Saudi Arabia is one of the most attractive aspects of Bahrain to manufacturing and tourism-related companies, simply because it is the www.bahrainthismonth.com
largest economy in the Gulf, but Bahrain also offers ease of access to the rest of the region.” And though the forum itself will be a biennial event, it will continue to be an investment promotion vehicle throughout the intervening years. Jerad continues: “There was interest from investors in the domestic market but also in the regional market, such as from manufacturers who can be based here and export into the wider region. Tourism services [such as restaurants, retail outlets and entertainment venues] in the domestic and regional context are also areas of opportunity. “We had close to USD2 billion in tourism and real estate assets presented during the forum, such as Bilaj Al Jazayir, which is a primary focus project. It will be a mixed-use residential, retail and hospitality development, and is due to begin phase one development before the end of the year. “The forum attracted business leaders and investors from several multinational companies who are keen to explore opportunities in the Kingdom. Several projects were featured at the forum, including residential and hospitality real estate projects. Ajmera, one of India’s largest real estate developers, announced a residential tower in Bahrain Bay, and Edamah formally announced the Jumeirah Al Sahel Resort, located close to Bahrain International Circuit. For projects like these the EDB works to develop investment, coordinate with regulatory agencies and promote the projects in alignment with the country’s investment promotion activities. “We have had success on the promotion of the Kingdom through the Team Bahrain approach, which highlights effective collaboration among government and private sector organisations. This approach supports the ongoing regulatory reform and easing of restrictions to make Bahrain more business friendly. All this, together with Gateway Gulf, means it’s looking very positive for the future.”

interview
Mushtak D
BUILDING AN EMPIRE BEHNAZ SANJANA Travel mogul Mushtak D is a prototype for how a dream and humble beginnings can be nurtured into giant, multinational trade that has changed the face of Bahrain’s travel industry.
A
small-town commerce graduate from India, Mushtak came to Bahrain in 1996, following in the footsteps of his father – his friend, philosopher and guide. Expanding on his experience from back home, he worked at the front office of top hotels in Bahrain until he switched paths to realise his long-time ambition in 2007. “Checking in and out guests every day, I harboured the dream of being at the other side of the reception counter, travelling the world and experiencing the best hospitality myself,” says Mushtak. “I knew this would be possible only if I started my own business. I used to interact with international travel agents and saw the potential for destination management in Bahrain. Except for one or two travel agencies, there was no one dealing in wholesale inbound tourism here. The major chunk of this business was taken by companies in the UK, UAE and Spain, who conducted business with hotels in Bahrain through their online booking systems.” 36 June 2018
With trust in himself and unwavering determination, he opened Farhat International Tours & Travels WLL. In its nascent stages, the company rode solely on Mushtak’s shoulders. “I would take tourists around for sightseeing tours, and do their airport transfers myself,” he says. “It was a one-man show, and my leap of faith.” Signing up with the best hotels in Bahrain back then was a struggle, given that his venture was new. “If I could not purchase the stipulated number of room-nights from each hotel, I could not get wholesale rates from them,” he explains. His dedication and perseverance paid off when he struck a deal with a Russian cargo company for accommodation for its crew. Mushtak says: “That’s when all the hoteliers started to recognise me, as 10 room-nights daily was big business. There was no looking back from thereon. I purchased two vehicles and hired an assistant in 2007. Today, I have 82 staff in Bahrain and over 100 employees in India, with a presence in 14 states, including all
the big metros.” Having gained stupendous momentum in inbound tourism (making end-to-end arrangements for visitors to Bahrain), Mushtak turned his sights to the outbound service sector. “I learnt the ropes of the trade and ventured into B2B transactions with travel agents,” he says. “However, our shortcoming lay in not having our own online platform. So, in 2010, I booked a domain called 24x7rooms.com to operate from an online portal. We contracted largely with hotels within the Middle East and a few other countries. “The first day we went online, we got seven room bookings. Today we see 1,000 to 1,500 bookings per day and are looking to cross the 2,000-booking mark per day by the second half of this year. Our system integrated more than 30 wholesalers worldwide under one umbrella, and we enabled travel agents in Bahrain, then in Doha, Muscat and Dubai, to access the portal. It is an extensive network with multiple suppliers throughout the European markets.” www.bahrainthismonth.com
Going from strength to strength, the wholesale room-booking site has landed in the big league. “Earlier, we used to purchase rooms from the world’s biggest hotel room traders,” he explains. “Now we do reciprocal business, where they buy a large volume of rooms from us. At present, over 7,000 travel professionals look to 24x7rooms.com to provide the best value for money to their individual customers.” The popular website has recently been enhanced to offer comprehensive travel products, including car rentals. “Registered travel agents can sell dynamic packages [including a range of hotels, transfers and several sightseeing tour options] from a realtime inventory at the click of a button to an individual client at once,” he adds. No doubt, the journey has been challenging, but Mushtak has emerged triumphant thanks to his keen instinct and inherent business acumen. He relates an incident in which his spontaneity paid big dividends. “During a management meeting, we came across the World Travel Mart, a prestigious global exposition, taking place in Cape Town within a week’s time from then,” he says. “Feeling the importance to participate, we registered with them, received our visas just a day before departure, and flew to Cape Town knowing nobody there.” All the last-minute uncertainties and
www.bahrainthismonth.com
arrangements paid off. “On doing our groundwork, we realised it was a terrific market to tap into,” he adds. With his can-do attitude, in the course of his short stay there, he established a company in South Africa, bought office space and set up bank accounts to kickstart a new branch of business that has been roaring ever since. The 42-year-old has proven that one doesn’t need lofty academic degrees to make a mark in the entrepreneurial world. Everything he has learnt is through hands-on experience and making smart commercial choices. He is extremely proud to have achieved all this on his own, with no legacy passed down to him. When asked his mantra for rapid success, he says: “To grow fast. You can’t be everywhere, but you need to forge strategic partnerships. In the last 18 months, we have successfully spread our wings to 14 countries using this business model and will continue to do so.” Another nugget of wisdom that he shares is to get off the beaten path. “No one goes to Bangladesh, but we participated in exhibitions there and realised what a rich market it is,” he says. “Similarly, with countries like Pakistan and Sri Lanka, where our commercial graph is only rising upward. Very few travel agencies, which have been around for many decades, tend to think outside the box and progress into new ventures.”
To describe his life’s journey in a nutshell, Mushtak chooses the word “blessed”. He says: “I am ever grateful to the Kingdom of Bahrain for allowing me to fulfil my ambitions. I have met some amazing people so far, some of which shared my vision and joined hands, to further fuel this steam engine. “I firmly believe that success is all about finding respect in your co-workers’ eyes. If I am able to appreciate my team members’ efforts and reward them with what they are deserving of, I consider it true success.” He deems his company’s highly regarded reputation and brand value to be his most important achievements. Of course, he’s received a few irresistible offers to sell his brand, but he laughs them off, saying: “This is my own baby, I’m not going to part with it!” His hunger for knowledge and success knows no bounds. Currently, Mushtak and his team are involved in setting up a destination management company in South Africa to invite inbound tourism business, and plans are under way to establish a similar set-up in Paris, France, and then in Malaysia. The dynamic businessman is on a constant learning curve and is setting his sights on a restaurant enterprise in the near future. That’s not surprising, given the business tycoon’s love for fine, gourmet food, along with long drives with his wife in his time off.

Spur-Winged Plover
Howard King
Masked Shrike
A
n avid birder, Howard knows a thing or two about birds. But this wasn’t always the case. In his younger days, he embarked on several interesting adventures – sailing across the Atlantic at the age of 21, and travelling to the West Indies, Central America, South America and the US. Having started his career with the Ordnance Survey, a premier mapping organisation in the UK, Howard moved to Saudi Arabia for two years before setting up his own business in Wales. In 1994, he came to Bahrain as one of 50 land surveyors for a contract with the Ministry of Housing. “I came, I saw – they liked me, I liked them,” he says. “Forty-nine went back, I stayed. And I’ve been here ever since.” Howard’s maritime interests (he was heavily connected with the Bahrain Sailing Committee) had always made him appreciate nature, but a chance spotting of a masked shrike in his garden and a Gulf Daily News interview with a birder, Eric Hirschfeld, got him involved in ‘birding’. Since then, he has been studying Bahrain’s birds and advocating their conservation. In 1994, a trip to the Hawar Islands gave him an opportunity that led to documenting the island’s breeding birds and wildlife. “I was asked to do some survey work there,” he explains. “During a helicopter flyby of Sawad Al-Janubiyah, the island where the socotra cormorant were breeding, I managed to take a few pictures with my tiny camera. There were 120,000 of them – a spectacular sight.” Hawar sees a lot of breeding birds – osprey, sooty falcons and terns – which Howard studied for a year, resulting in a book, The Breeding Birds of Hawar, in 1999. “No one was 38 June 2018
THE BIRDMAN APPLE SHARMA Seventy-one-year-old amateur ornithologist, Howard King, has been observing birds of Bahrain for decades. He shares his journey and passion for these feathered creatures. really aware of the variety, sheer size and majesty of Hawar,” he says. “It’s unique and should be respected. I was able to capture a little bit of that magic.” Hawar’s conservation is clearly close to Howard’s heart and he’s wary of mass development, saying: “You can build hotels, but for what they have on Hawar, it has to be unique, as unique as the wildlife itself.” He has also written a pocket guide Birds of Bahrain, presenting a detailed record of bird species, with the intention of raising public and environmental awareness for their protection. Howard has a web page and is active on social media. “The power is in sharing, not in withholding,” he says. “I’ve always worked on that principle and the book is just an extension of that.” Speaking of Bahrain’s native birds, Howard says: “There are not that many endemic species. We share birds with Eastern Arabia, the Eastern Province, UAE and Qatar. There aren’t a great deal that stay and breed throughout the year.” Some of these include the graceful warbler, white-cheeked bulbul, doves, the western reef herons, terns and more, meticulously classified in his book. There are two migratory seasons (winter and summer passage) for birds in Bahrain that vary
from species to species. “The winter passage starts in August and goes through to November, with birds leaving the north going south,” adds Howard. “They can stop here or go beyond. Some go to Africa, some to India. Those same species will then come back the same way.” The places to spot them depend on their dietary needs. “If they are a wader, small coastal bird, they go to the shoreline and mudflats. Desert species will go to the desert, and so on.” Howard believes ignorance is the biggest hindrance to conservation. On protecting the local fauna, he says: “Birds are just the tip of the iceberg. The white-cheeked bulbul is protected but still sold in the markets. The easiest thing to do is to enforce that law. Yet there is a failure due to lack of resources and budget. The greatest challenge to Bahrain is identifying what you’ve got and what you need to preserve.” His favourite species is the bird that first piqued his interest – the masked shrike. And the rarest he’s come across is the spur-winged plover. “I think I’m the only living person in Bahrain who has ever seen one,” he says. With hundreds of birds captured by his trusted Nikon 850, Howard humbly says he’s not a photographer, just a birder with a camera. www.bahrainthismonth.com

SPREADING THE JOY OF ART Through her new venture, Karina Al Zu’bi shares her passion for fine art with the larger community. She tells Behnaz Sanjana about her arty endeavours and the road she plans to tread.
L
ocated conveniently in the pleasing precincts of Palm Square on Budaiya Highway is Karina Zu’bi’s Paint & Palette Art Studio. The studio’s interior is usually scattered with canvases spanning various sizes, their splashes of colour standing out against the spotless white walls. “Art is my passion,” says Karina. “I always had an inclination towards it since I was a young girl. It is also my way of giving back to the community in Bahrain, which I’ve been a part of for two decades. I understand that not everyone can buy a piece of art, but everyone can draw and paint as a way of expression and to let out their creative side.” Karina is the owner and mastermind behind Paint & Palette, which opened in March this year and has quickly become one of Bahrain’s premier art studios, with a strong focus on art education for adults and children from all walks of life. “Our classes are taught by expert teachers and are tailor-made to suit different levels, ages and abilities,” she says. A common aspect of each class is the fun and relaxing environment that the studio provides its students. Karina and her fellow artist, Carlo Rico (who is also the creative manager of her studio), have tasted success at many local and 40 June 2018
international art fairs and shows. Under their able tutelage, beginners and previously trained students are guided into the wonderful world of drawing and painting. “We help identify their skills, teach them new techniques, draw out their vivid imaginations and make them realise their inherent artistic talents,” explains Karina. “We enable them to evolve as artists by advancing their abilities and letting them develop their own unique artistic identity and trademark. Everybody can draw and paint well,
as long as they have the right guidance and a good teacher.” The children’s classes are suitable for youngsters from age seven and up. They learn the basic fundamentals of fine art, like composition, pattern, perspective, tone and mixing of colours. They are given the opportunity to experiment with and explore various mediums such as acrylic, charcoal, pencil, pastel and collage work. “Each class focuses on imparting knowledge and skill sets,

with an emphasis on the principles of art,” adds Karina. “It is a great way to build a foundation to enable kids to confidently find their own style.” The classes are offered as a set of eight sessions, lasting two hours each. Paint & Palette’s sessions for adults have proved to be a therapeutic experience for many, including those who are complete novices. “A lot of our students come to enhance or add onto their artistic competencies and techniques,” says Karina. “Established artists who are planning to hold exhibitions are also part of our classes. Others look to art as therapy, as a mode of selfexpression by way of creating something of their own. Sometimes they come with a picture and tell us it’s what they want to recreate, or maybe they want to specifically learn how to do landscapes, portraits or faces. Different themes are explored in our classes, while imparting know-how about line, tone, measurement, texture and composition.” Another important service the studio provides is for students who wish to make their own art portfolio. “Those school students who want to get into universities abroad to learn fine arts or related courses come to us to assist and guide them in making an impressive collection of paintings to speak of,” she explains. “We begin with determining their artistic level and skill, and then, based on that, one-on-one sessions take place to recommend the direction the student must take, and the vision and style he or she must develop. We bring out the best in their artwork.” Karina is a prolific artist herself and was chosen by Art Bahrain Across Borders (Art BAB) as one of the 18 artists to showcase their paintings in India this year. “Bahrain and India have strong ties; the two countries go back thousands of years in trading spices and pearls,” she says. “I went with the concept of www.bahrainthismonth.com
doors for the exhibitions in Mumbai and Delhi because each door holds mysteries behind it and has a story to tell. It was a great feeling to have had such a warm reception there, and all of my near-life-size paintings were picked up during the exhibitions.” A naturalised Bahraini through marriage, Karina says that her artistic abilities developed informally when she was very young. She was inspired by the beautiful surroundings of her home, the sounds of musical instruments, her affection for yoga and her loving family. Her studies and travels took her to Australia and eventually brought her to Bahrain. Although yoga, her marriage and children have been her focus for the past several years, her inner artist was waiting to manifest. She says: “I was instantly fascinated by Bahrain when I came here, and the mysteries of Dilmun captivated my heart and imagination. It set me on a journey to unravel the origins of ancient civilisations and dynasties, which are reflected in my art.
“My life has a new purpose with Paint & Palette, and I enjoy interacting with fellow artists and teaching the finer points of art to learners. For this, I am grateful to my husband, Qays Zu’bi, and our children, Sari and Layan, for their constant encouragement and support. I am also thankful to Tamkeen and Art BAB for providing me with the stepping stone to show my talent in Bahrain’s multicultural environment, as well as abroad.” Going forward, Karina wishes to extend support to special needs children, with monthly and then weekly art classes for them. The studio has already supported the Art for Autism Awareness initiative that took place in Bahrain earlier this year and participated in a tourism event at Bahrain University to promote the country. Karina looks forward to being part of the Annual Bahrain Summer Festival 2018 organised by the Bahrain Authority for Culture and Antiquities. Her work can be seen on Instagram @ paintandpalettebh.

CANINE COOKIES FOR A CAUSE Teenager Osian Clark tells Liz O’Reilly how baking healthy snacks for his own dogs inspired him to set up an online business to help other animals.
F
ox Phood was launched at the beginning of Ramadan offering yummy dog and cat treats, all home-produced by the 13-year-old St Christopher’s School student. He explains: “Because I like cooking, my mum and dad both brought me up within the food industry. And we prefer to have homemade healthy food, so I decided to also cook for our dogs so they can eat healthier. “I have two dogs, they are a brother named Flash and sister named Goldie, who will turn three in October. I used to have another dog — his name was Fox. But, unfortunately, due to old age, he passed away last January at the whopping age of 16! So, in honour of him and his grumpiness all through my childhood, I named the company after Fox and Phood because I wanted to state clearly it was a foodrelated business and I spelt it in a funny way to create a more urban chill feeling. “All the ingredients used are totally safe to be consumed by animals and consist of a base mixture that includes wheat, eggs, milk, flour, baking powder/soda, coconut oil, peanut butter, corn syrup, apple, carrots, shredded coconuts 42 June 2018
and oats.” Osian also makes cupcakes, which are a bit more substantial, and hands them out when he goes with his mum Weena to feed stray dogs and cats near his home in Saar. And, should you desire a birthday cake for your pampered pet, that’s possible too. He says his mum is his main inspiration, explaining: “She is definitely an animal lover. She was the one who inspired me the most. Since I was young, she has been filling [our home] with all different kinds of animals — I have guinea pigs, at the highest we had a total of 12, fish, birds — sounds like a zoo!” By selling his doggy cookies and kitty nibbles, Osian aims to raise funds for animal welfare organisations such as the BSPCA and Tony the Dogfather as well as highlighting the plight of the island’s stray population. He says: “We can’t do everything but if we can help out a bit, we should. And they all need donations. I hope I can also bring awareness of stray dogs and cats to more people to help them care and love animals. Having a pet is not just for fun but is a commitment. Don’t just dump them when they are not wanted. I would
like people to know responsibility is very important. Animals are not rubbish!” Osian says he wants to continue helping animals into adulthood and would consider a career in animal welfare, “who knows?” For now, though, he just wants to sell as many cookies, cat treats and cupcakes as he can. The treats start at BD2.500 for a half kilo of dog biscuits and they can be ordered for collection via WhatsApp on 35 579-123 or at Fox Phood on Facebook or Instagram. They’re also available at Weena’s lash spa in Seef, near the Seef petrol station. Osian adds: “Sorry, no deliveries. I’m using all my pocket money [and donations from mum] to make the cookies!” Dog Treats • Signature Peanut Butter Biscuits • Wheat Peanut Butter Cookies • Vanilla Cupcakes with Peanut Butter Yogurt Frosting Cat Treats • Crunchy Tuna Bites • Tuna Cupcakes www.bahrainthismonth.com

For the really serious fan, mark the occasion with the very limited edition Hublot Big Bang Referee 2018 FiFA World Cup Russia timepiece which will be worn by all the match officials.
Kingdom-wide Kick-off! One of the biggest sporting events on the international calendar is just around the corner and the island’s entertainment venues are going out of their way to make sure fans can watch the 2018 FIFA World Cup Russia in style. We’ve rounded up some great spots to catch all the action.
44 June 2018
Al Areen Palace & Spa’s special World Cup Tent allows you to watch all the games in comfort and style with football-themed snacks and refreshments. Giant TVs with surround-sound will ensure you soak up the atmosphere of every kick and goal. And the property also has a range of footie-themed spa and fitness deals to keep the atmosphere going. The Stadium at Four Seasons Bahrain Bay will be showing daily matches on a massive HD screen live in the exclusive Football Tent, which features a 4m x 10m HD screen as well as 160 LCD screens to give a true stadium atmosphere. There’s a grand seating option, lounge-style seats and even exclusive standing fan zone areas, with a wide variety of food and drinks on offer. The area also includes foosball games, a Play Station zone and other family activities as well as special offers on brews and food. The tent opens an hour before games on match days and from 4pm to 11pm on other days. Reem Al Bawadi, at the Ramada Manama City Centre, is usually well known for its delicious Middle Eastern cuisine. But in celebration of the World Cup, some dishes will be taking on a distinctly Russian flavour to help you get into the spirit of the occasion. And, if you want to combine your footballing fever with the island’s next favourite pastime, brunch, then head to Baharat at Le Méridien City Centre Bahrain, which will host special events on June 22 and 29. The restaurant promises World Cup-inspired gastronomy and decoration as well as free-flowing beverages to celebrate or commiserate on your team’s performance.
Not surprisingly, given its name, Wembley Lounge at Atiram Premier Hotel, will be going out of its way to put on show for the sporting spectacular. Already a venue where fans gather to watch regular football, and other sports, the bar is promising special menus, drinks deals and, of course, that important Wembley atmosphere, which makes this one of the island’s favourite party spots. Always keen to be part of the big occasions, the Ramee Group, with its wide range of properties, has several promotions planned to mark this major sporting occasion. The Ramee Grand Hotel & Spa’s swish sports lounge, Red Lions, is an atmospheric spot with plenty of big flat screens to ensure everyone a ringside view. Legends Sports Lounge at www.bahrainthismonth.com
worldcup2018 the Ramee California, Match Point at Ramee Palace All Suites and Cosmo Sports Bar at the Ramee International Hotel will also show all the action live, coupled with excellent food and beverage options. The Ritz-Carlton, Bahrain, has the World Pavilion, open daily from 2pm till 2am, where aficionados can witness the month-long tournament in a football-themed atmosphere with à la carte menu options, shisha service and special beverage menus. Entry is free with a BD10 minimum spend. Watch all the thrills of the World Cup at the all-new renovated Sherlock Holmes bar at The Gulf Hotel. This long-time Bahrain favourite has had an upgrade to include additional screens at every angle, a non-smoking area, modern entertainment features and state-of-the-art lighting. But, don’t worry, it still retains its traditional oldEnglish feel and is ready to welcome fans for kick-off. Mövenpick Hotel Bahrain is another venue with a special purpose-built 2018 FIFA World Cup Fun Zone tent. Gather your friends to watch live the opening ceremony and call in throughout the month to see all the matches broadcast live on the big screens. There’s also a special menu and shisha to round off the occasion. Havesters at the Crowne Plaza Bahrain will also be showing the live action. And for a spot of football fever with a South American touch, because, let’s face it, everyone wants to be on the winning team, head to the Sofitel Bahrain Zallaq Thalassa Sea & Spa where, for the whole month, Tapas will be relocated to the Layali Al Zallaq Tent which claims to display the biggest screen in Bahrain! Coral Bay becomes Sports Bay for the duration of the tournament offering a unique beachside environment in which to cheer on your favourite team. And, of course, JJ’s will be among the many bars on the island where fans will gather to watch the action and celebrate or commiserate.
Make sure you never miss a match with our full line-up of all games till the end of the group stages.

A Timely Introduction
Keep pace with all the football action in real time with Hublot’s Big Bang Referee 2018 FIFA World Cup Russia timepiece. For its third participation as a branded licensee, Hublot has created the watch that all football and Hublot fans have been waiting for. A smart watch that will instantly connect you to every decisive second of the matches being played at the 2018 FIFA World Cup. A much-anticipated innovation that could not have been imagined by any other watch brand, given the extent to which Hublot and football are as one. And although you’ll have to wait a couple of weeks for the start of the competition, you can wear the connected football watch on your wrist right now! A specific need was expressed by FIFA, and Hublot brought it to life. Wanting a customised watch for the referees, FIFA asked Hublot to conceive the perfect timepiece to accompany them on the pitches during the matches. Hublot designed this connected watch, its first, for the footballing universe: the Big Bang Referee 2018 FIFA World Cup Russia. It’s a unique edition that is limited to 2,018 pieces. It has all the attributes of the iconic Big Bang. Its emblematic architecture cut out of the lightness of titanium, its bezel decorated with six H-shaped screws, its Kevlar insert. Even the display on its analogue mode dial could pass for the same aesthetic as that of the automatic models. In terms of size, its 49mm case is what makes the first difference, then its motor, which, for the first time, is driven by 54 June 2018
technology connected to digital intelligence. Big Bang Referee 2018 FIFA World Cup Russia Available now in all Hublot sales outlets, this is the official FIFA watch. Beating to the rhythm of football, it immediately shows its distinctive spirit as the personification of an application specially developed for the competition and a series of ‘fan’ dials in the colours of each participating nation. Featuring several notifications, the watch announces matches 15 minutes before their kick-off, as well as yellow and red cards, player changes and goals. It vibrates, displaying the word GOAL instantly every time a goal is scored. During the match, the dial shows statistics including the score, number of cards, names of goal-scorers, player substitutions and match time. The digital world provides the Big Bang with even greater flexibility and versatility. A watch which, having emblematically borne the first Hublot manufacture movement, has been reinvented for the digital era by offering 32 dials inspired by the flags of the participating countries, and two neutral dials. It is available in analogue or digital versions. Thanks to its patented interchangeable ‘One Click’ strap, the watch can easily be matched to one of its two straps provided. To perfect each fan’s kit, Hublot has also anticipated an additional strap in the colours of their country. Moreover, it has thousands of downloadable applications in addition to its competition functions. It is compatible with all telephones using Android 4.4 and above or iOS 9 and
above. For charging, the watch just needs to be placed on a contact charger. The referees For the first time, they will be wearing the Big Bang Referee 2018 FIFA World Cup Russia with its smart technology imagined by Hublot. As well as all the functions available on the 2,018 numbered models, the referees’ watches will be connected to goal-line technology, an electronic video assistance system for refereeing, which follows all the trajectories of the ball and determines for certain if the ball did or did not entirely cross the goal line. On the pitch, the watchmaker will be ever present in the game, as always, by sequencing time, changes and extra time to the rhythm of its Big Bang-shaped referee boards. Hublot loves football and its family includes many star players (Pelé, Maradona and Mourinho) and coaches from prestigious clubs Benfica, Chelsea, Juventus and Ajax. Having joined the world of football in 2006, by becoming the sponsor of the Swiss national team, Hublot is now top of the league. With its status of ‘FIFA Official Watch’ and ‘FIFA Official Timekeeper’ for the 2018 FIFA World Cup, it has a total of three World Cups, three FIFA Confederations Cups, as well as three UEFA EURO editions, and three seasons of the Champions League and Europa League. The watches are available in Bahrain at Hublot Boutique, Moda Mall. Call 17 520-080. www.bahrainthismonth.com

MOTORING
this month
A Superior Drive, p59
Volvo XC60
My Life in Cars DICK POTTER One traffic accident is reported every 14 minutes in Bahrain. That’s according to an article I read which was published in a medical bulletin in 2003. Has the timing of traffic accident reporting changed since then? That, I do not know. I do know, however, that all drivers in Bahrain will concur with the section of the article which stated the need for tougher enforcement of legislation and policy for speed limits, seat belts, driver education programmes, and collaborative studies to support road traffic accident prevention and safety. Now, whilst the traffic directorate deals with this, do we drivers have means at hand to better protect ourselves should we be involved in a traffic accident? What if we could drive safer cars? Well, maybe we can. Every year, before a new car hits the showrooms, it goes through rigorous testing by safety organisations – in Europe that is the European New Car Assessment Programme (Euro NCAP), for example – and is then rated based on how it does in crash tests. Types of crash tests would include head-on shunts and T-junction smashes. Dummies are used for these tests, not real people, dummies! The top models in each category are then revealed so that drivers know which motor would protect them the best, should they be involved in a traffic accident. Yes, we know the vast majority of new vehicles have great safety features; however, some surpass others, so, here are the picks of the crop for 2018 then. Given the predilection for SUVs in this neck of the woods, I’ll start with this category. Ta dah, it’s the Volvo www.bahrainthismonth.com
XC60. This very snazzy looking vehicle, I must say, received accolades for its protection of passengers in the aforementioned crash tests. It scored 98 per cent for adult and 87 per cent for child safety. Passengers suffered very little impact and were unlikely to get whiplash. Furthermore, its occupant ratings are among the highest on record for vehicles tested in 2017. In the family car section, Subaru came out tops – with two models! The XV SUV and the Impreza hatchback both triumphed. Since they’re identical in how they’re made – despite looking different, you understand – Euro NCAP awarded both of them 94 per cent in tests for adult safety and 89 per cent for child safety. Moving on, we have the ‘posh’ vehicle category. The winner here was the Volkswagen Arteon. Whilst it competes with cars such as the Audi A5 Sportback, it scored higher in safety tests. It scored 96 per cent in adult occupant safety tests and 85 per cent in tests for child occupant safety. Lastly, but evidently not least, was the Volkswagen Polo hatchback. Despite its minuscule size – this is the small car category – it scored 96 per cent for adult safety and 85 per cent for child safety. Furthermore, it includes, as standard, some of the latest vehicle safety systems. So there you have it. If that wasn’t something you previously considered before buying a car, this article might help you put it on your shopping list? Whilst we may not be able to control many of the factors that contribute to being involved in a traffic accident, driving a safer vehicle could certainly go a long way to preventing the ensuing injuries. BEHBEHANI BROTHERS: PORSCHE
A Superior Drive Porsche’s new Cayenne S is faster and lighter than its predecessors, as Dick Potter found out when he put the car through its paces.
www.bahrainthismonth.com
Today, no one bats an eyelid when the sports car makers like Maserati or Jaguar churn out an SUV. That wasn’t quite the case 15 years ago. When Porsche first launched its SUV, Porsche aficionados were almost apoplectic at the idea. Fast forward from 2002 and they’re probably chagrined at the fuss they made, given the absolute success of the Cayenne model. To give you an idea of that success, the first two generations of the Cayenne amassed sales of 770,000. Not bad, eh? Finally having the pleasure of getting my hands on the Cayenne third generation S, what did I decide to do for the day? Play golf, that’s what. I can explain. Driving this black beauty from the Porsche Centre Bahrain on my ‘Achilles’ heel’, the Sitra causeway, was never going to give me a feel for what this car could do. A run to Riffa Golf Club, however, would do just that. The Cayenne S – there is also a base and turbo model – is the fastest and lightest of the generations. Quite a bit of overtime amassed by the engineering teams then, one suspects. It is longer, lower and broader than its predecessors. Other subtle, but notable changes, include wider tyres at rear than at the front and a full-width LED light bar between the rear lights. Under the bonnet, engines are down on size but up on power. Whilst I confess to holding V8s near and dear to my heart, I certainly wasn’t disappointed with the performance of the Cayenne S’s 2.9-litre 440hp twin-turbo V6 offering. Whether you choose the V6 or V8 engine, it will be paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission, which routes power through its active all-wheel drive system. Also debuting into the Cayenne are performance options such as rear-axle steering and Porsche surface
coated brakes, a set of discs covered in tungstencarbide. This not only improves break responsiveness but increases the service life of the brakes by 30 per cent. As you might expect, however, these options will hike up the costs somewhat. Clambering inside, the cream leather-moulded seats are very similar to those in a 911 and they drop low. This helps you pretend you’re driving a racy sports car and not a large SUV, even if it is a Porsche. Rear seat passengers have plenty of room, even the tallest of them – my missus is five foot nine inches and she can attest to that. There’s an extra 100 litres of boot space versus the outgoing model. Whilst my golf clubs did fit comfortably – another reason I decided to play golf, you understand – the luggage compartment isn’t as cavernous as you might expect. The centre dashboard is dominated by the 12.3-inch Porsche Control Management (PCM). This is the nucleus for all the car’s functions from entertainment to the innumerable configuration settings. It works in tandem with two digital displays that sit on either side of the gauge cluster so the driver can have information displayed in front. Unlike some of the optional extras, this feature is part and parcel of all three versions. Driving the Cayenne S? It takes off with that satisfying Porsche growl, handles superbly and hits 100km in five seconds. Par for the Porsche course, the materials, quality and attention to detail of this lovely creation are almost beyond criticism. It’s not just superior to drive for an SUV. It’s superior to drive, full stop. Visit Porsche Centre Bahrain in Sitra for a test drive. Call 17 459-911. June 2018 59

JAC
The Business Taskmaster The M1 Refine defines the role of business efficiency.
62 June 2018
JAC’s Refine Minibus is an ultimate choice for any business. With options from three to 12 seats, the wagon plays a variety of business and leisure roles: as a hotel shuttle, for tourists on sightseeing trips or for taking businesspeople to the big event. The Refine bus comes in a range of colour options, which combined with its fashionable design element, reliability and economy, are part of the vehicle’s DNA. The stable, modern exterior is complemented by a comfortable, convenient and spacious interior. The Refine features a vivacious design and LED cornering lamps. The wagon versions boast a pair of fog lamps, which are neatly blended into the lower section of the front bumper. With their high penetration capability, you will feel more secure. The 12-seat model offers a quiet cocoon in which driver and passengers lack nothing of substance. The general sense of roominess is helped by having the gear lever located on the central console, thus helping to create a full-length flat floor space. The Refine’s clever design allows the seats to be tipped up, slid or reclined. Whatever the circumstances, there’s sure to be a combination to suit your requirements. Safety is a key element in every JAC vehicle and the Refine MPV has an impressive new safety-surround design. The driver and front seat passenger in the wagon can be reassured with the inclusion of twin air bags. In a serious accident, these devices instantly
inflate to help protect the seat occupants from injury. The body is made from high-strength material to absorb impact in case of a collision. Large and powerful disc brakes are available on the rear wheels as well as those on the front. They provide the high level of stopping performance required when a wagon or van is fully laden. The ABS+EBD braking systems guarantee driving safety. The two- or three-seater Refine is not just a sensible business tool. While it is primarily a practical, hard-working load carrier, those seated upfront will appreciate the high degree of comfort and convenience that feature in a beautifully appointed passenger cabin. Behind, the cargo compartment is a giant box more than 2.37m long, 1.65m wide and 1.15m high. The rear seats are arranged in a two plus three configuration and passengers can enjoy the extra space afforded by the new wider body. The JAC M1 Refine three-seater cargo van is available at just BD3,495 as a special offer this Ramadan. Alternatively, the vehicle is available to lease at BD120 per month (terms and conditions apply). Take a look and try out the range of JAC vehicles. For attractive finance schemes and test drives, visit the JAC showroom located at Segaya Plaza, Zinj. Ramadan timings are 9am to 1pm and 7pm to 11pm. Call 17 270-270. www.bahrainthismonth.com

DINING
this month Chef Javed Qureshi
A Taste of India APPLE SHARMA Sofitel Bahrain Zallaq Thalassa Sea & Spa’s new Indian restaurant, Rivaaj, is steeped in tradition much like its food. Walking into Rivaaj felt like being transported to a time of opulence and royal elegance of the Mughal Empire, a theme that spreads throughout the entire restaurant. The décor is a luxurious blend of maroon and gold, with ornate chandeliers and walls adorned with gold-framed paintings of Emperor Shah Jahan and his beloved wife Mumtaz Mahal, in whose memory the Taj Mahal was built. There are two private rooms – Zameen, with low traditional seating, and Maharaja, a cosy room ideal for intimate gatherings. There’s even a miniature Taj Mahal at the far end of the restaurant, where my dining companion and I were seated. We were promptly served spicy poppadoms with a selection of condiments and greeted by restaurant manager Ayush Agarwal, who explained the concept behind Rivaaj, saying: “It’s not just the food, it’s the journey. Guests can enjoy Indian cuisine and culture and see what India is all about.” He went on to tell us about renowned head chef Javed Qureshi, who specialises in North Indian Awadhi cuisine and comes from the well-known Indian Qureshi family of chefs – his grandfather was a master chef at the famous Bukhara restaurant in India. After explaining the drinks menu to us, he recommended some of Rivaaj’s own Masala Creations, such as Homemade Jaljeera (Indian spiced lemonade), Masaledar Thanda (Coke with tandoori masala) and my personal favourite, Masala Margarita. As we sipped on our drinks, executive chef Indrajit Saha came over to take us through the menu. Anything named Al Rivaaj (marked with an ‘R’) were signature dishes, which we tried in our sampler of appetisers. Anar Badam Ke Aloo (R), potatoes with almond and fresh pomegranate was one of my favourites. Crispy potato skins and perfectly spiced filling topped with pomegranate not only made it look www.bahrainthismonth.com
royal but also gave it a refined taste. Tabkh Hara Kebab, Bengal gram and spinach cakes, and Paneer Khas, exotic cottage cheese chunks filled with mint chutney, were equally tasty. Murgh Al Rivaaj (R), a version of chicken tikka with a special marinade, was served on charcoal embers, lending it a lovely, smoky taste. Finally, Jhinga Al Samreen showcased tiger prawns with onions and coriander roots. While still reeling from our delicious starters, chef Qureshi made an appearance to explain his signature dishes. Raan Al Rivaaj (R), whole lamb leg marinated overnight and cooked with the chef’s secret recipe, has gained massive popularity since the restaurant opened. Apart from the extremely tender meat, the star of the dish was the rich and aromatic gravy, cooked overnight in bone broth with a blend of hidden, rare spices. Chooza Makhani (R), small chunks of chicken tikka cooked in rich tomato gravy, was a tad tangy but perfectly spiced, and would give your standard chicken tikka masala a run for its money. Gandana Ka Saag, chopped spinach tempered with garlic and red chillies, stood out as every mouthful burst with subtle underlying flavours of garlic and spice. Last but not least, Adraki Gobhi, cauliflower tempered with ginger and whole crushed spices, and Dal Al Rivaaj (R), black lentils cooked overnight, both came tops on flavour. Our feast was accompanied by various biryanis, made deliciously moist with saffron cream, and assorted breads. The entire meal was perfectly spiced, even for my dining companion, whose spice tolerance is rather mild. Moreover, every course was paired with Indian grape, Sula – Rivaaj being the only restaurant in Bahrain to serve it. Although bursting at the seams, we somehow made space for desserts: a decadent trio of Kheer Shan E Rivaaj, Indian rice pudding with dry fruits; Kulfi ice cream; and the ever-popular Gulab Jamun. A special mention goes to Gaurav Kumar, outlet in-charge, who impressed with his friendliness and vast culinary knowledge. Rivaaj offers a true taste of authentic Awadhi cuisine, fit for a king, and a first for the island!

ASIA JEWELLERS
Beautiful Freaks
Ulysse Nardin will ‘freak you out’ with its new advertising campaign #FREAKMEOUT.
Ulysse Nardin presented its new online and off-line advertising campaign, appearing worldwide last month. With several different visuals and a film, Ulysse Nardin continues to swim against the tide as it pays homage to more than 170 years of marine heritage. Swimming Against the Tide Ulysse Nardin’s new publicity campaign tells the story of one shark’s odyssey through metropolitan New York and Shanghai. This shark represents an off-kilter take on the marine theme, an essential element of the brand ever since its creation in 1846. The campaign, created by the Parisian agency Extreme, sets the ‘king of the ocean’ out of context from the world of water and into an urban universe. We see him here in the streets of New York and Shanghai, far from the deep waters and reefs that are his natural habitat. Mysterious, instinctive, dynamic and self-assured, this predator is the incarnation of action because if he stops moving, he will perish. Always in movement, he doesn’t wait for things to change; he provokes change. Powerful, distinguished and efficient, he is associated with success in the world of business and finance. This new visual identity accompanies a global strategy in which the world of the ocean remains at the forefront of the brand’s expression. This message comes with a new twist, paying homage to the principles of freedom and innovation that have always guided the brand’s creative 82 June 2018
dynamic. Ulysse Nardin is speaking to modern explorers, to today’s Ulysses, to those who make their own rules, weigh the anchor and swim against the tide. To Beautiful Freaks. Freaks are those exceptional, extraordinary, fantastic, nonconformist, and occasionally paranormal free spirits. #FREAKMEOUT, or “surprise me” is the rallying cry of this campaign, last used at the 2018 SIHH (Salon International de la Haute Horlogerie). #FREAKMEOUT is a multifaceted slogan for the timepieces of today. Ulysse Nardin is deeply invested in preserving the world’s oceans and intends to use this campaign to speak to those who are serious about sustainable development. Sharks are a vital element of the ecosystem and, as such, are crucial to the health of the planet and to our own survival. The disappearance of a species such as the shark would doubtless lead the way to the disappearance of thousands of others. “This ‘shark in the city’ speaks directly to our aspirations with a fresh and audacious perspective. Anchored in the action, it creates an element of surprise,” says Patrick Pruniaux, CEO of Ulysse Nardin since autumn 2017. #FREAKMEOUT clearly uses this audacity and surprise to serve the ambitions of its new captain. Ulysse Nardin timepieces are available in Bahrain at Asia Jewellers. Call 17 535-344 or visit www.asiajewellers.com www.bahrainthismonth.com

Dr Rajesh Gawai
If you have battled long enough to shed the stubborn pounds and maintain your ideal weight with no luck, Middle East Hospital has the right solution for you. The Middle East Group of Hospitals and Medical Centers comprises a multi-speciality hospital and three medical centres spread across the Kingdom. They offer high-quality healthcare and a variety of related services at their various clinics. The expertise at each of these renowned establishments is backed up by state-of-the-art diagnostic amenities. Dr Rajesh Gawai is a specialist plastic surgeon at the Middle East Hospital’s plastic surgery and dermatology department in Segaya. He has skilfully carried out body contouring and reshaping by liposuction. Liposuction is a procedure that sculpts the body by getting rid of unwanted fat from specific areas, like the abdomen, chin, sides of the belly and thighs, amongst others. In this surgical procedure, a small cannula is inserted in the area from where fat is to be removed. The fat is aspirated out with the help of a special body-jet liposuction machine. This process uses the latest technology and is fast and efficient. It is the surest and most effective way of getting a leaner, fitter form, as it removes the actual fat cells that store fat in the body. Once an area has been treated with liposuction, it will not accumulate fat again. However, it is important to remember that if the patient continues with bad eating habits, he or she will put on weight in other parts in the body. So, in that sense, a lifestyle change is required by www.bahrainthismonth.com

way of a healthy diet and regular exercise. Patients notice the difference in their figures right after the surgery. However, it is important to wear pressure garments to minimise any swelling, which is a natural reaction of the body to the ‘trauma’ caused by any surgical procedure. Within a month of the operation, great results can be clearly seen by how the body looks. The procedure strictly follows international guidelines, which advocate that the aspiration of fat should be within five per cent of the body weight. So, for a person who weighs 100kg, up
to 5kg of fat can be safely drawn out. Dr Rajesh Gawai stringently adheres to these standard practices followed globally to deliver the safest and best results to his patients. Liposuction is one of the most commonly requested and performed cosmetic surgeries to help patients who have struggled to lose those last few pounds or maintain an ideal body weight even after rigorous diet and exercise plans. In such cases, this procedure is ideal to give them the body they want. Call 17 362-233 or 66 997-778. June 2018 83

Dr Sonal Jagtap
BAHRAIN SPECIALIST HOSPITAL
Stub It Out Specialist pulmonologist Dr Sonal Jagtap explains the dangers of smoking and how Ramadan can help you quit.
www.bahrainthismonth.com
Ramadan is a time to celebrate, a time to reconnect with faith. Fasting and prayers during Ramadan give strength to the body, mind and soul. The ban on daylight smoking brings a great opportunity to quit this harmful activity. However, enjoying shisha is also common during Ramadan, with many tents making it a feature of their entertainment. But many smokers are unaware that one puff of shisha is equal to five to 10 cigarettes (based on the content and pattern of smoking), that means an average of one hour of shisha smoke is approximately equal to smoking 50 to 75 cigarettes. Smoke from cigarettes and shisha contains more than 4,000 chemicals and 60 of them are proven to damage nearly every organ in the body. Smoke causes lung and oral cancers, breathing problems, increased risk of pneumonia, heart attack and stroke, weakens the bones, decreases the vision and causes many other diseases. Smokers also often expose their loved ones to these toxic chemicals and children are especially vulnerable, particularly to asthma. Hence, it is advisable never to start smoking. But if you are already a smoker, here are some steps that could help you quit the habit: • Make a list of all the thoughts that make you want
to give up; for example, love for family, health problems, etc. • Set a date and time to give up; if not the first day of Ramadan, any other day is a blessing. • There are two ways to quit. Either reduce slowly over one to two weeks or stop ‘cold turkey’. You can choose either. • Throw away all the items related to smoking. • Find a friend who can help and follow up. • Most individuals don’t smoke during fasting hours. All you must do is to keep up the good work even after Iftar and don’t let go after Eid. • The first few days will be difficult to fast as well as quitting but, done together, it will really help. • Even if you ‘give in’ at some point, don’t give up giving up. One cigarette doesn’t mean you have to continue smoking again. All you need is a strong will. Many quit smoking and so can you. Make a resolution this Holy Month of Ramadan. Take your first steps to quit smoking and help others do the same. Call 17 812-000 or email sonal.jagtap@bsh.com.bh June 2018 85

88 June 2018
The festive season calls for acquiring special possessions that you can treasure forever. Now is the time to have the slimmest watch in the world on your wrist. Titan Company Limited, the world’s fifth largest watchmaker, brings you the iconic Titan Edge Ceramic. This collection of artful masterpieces, that fall under the brand’s popular Edge series, are the slimmest ceramic watches ever made, at a thickness of just 4.4mm. Designed with a 0.30mm wafer-thin sunburst dial and applied indices to make time reading legible, Edge Ceramic is available in two variants – black with rose gold indices and anthracite grey with silver indices. The special collection comprises timepieces that are made from scratch-resistant, skin-friendly ceramic with a sapphire crystal glass on the dial and an all-ceramic strap. The watch’s elegant simplicity is powered with the revolutionary Titan Edge movement at 1.15mm, the slimmest quartz movement so far. “By inculcating Titan’s heritage in craftsmanship and expertise in innovation, Titan Edge has always occupied a special place in the watch connoisseur’s heart,” says Suparna Mitra, chief marketing officer, watches and accessories, Titan Company Limited. “With Edge Ceramic, the challenge in the project was maintaining the hallmark Edge-like thinness in ceramic, an extremely hard but brittle material. discerning consumer. Titan has once again made a mark with Edge Ceramic – a confluence of class and craftsmanship.” This ground-breaking series has been honoured with the prestigious Red Dot Design Award from the Design Zentrum Nordrhein Westfalen, a renowned authority that sets the standard of design quality within various product categories. It is a simple process in which an echoendoscope, which is similar to the usual gastroscope, is inserted through the patient’s mouth and oesophagus, to the duodenum (shortest part of the small intestine) while he or she is under sedation. The transducer at the tip of the endoscope sends waves through the wall of the intestine and collects information and images of the organs around the stomach and duodenum, giving clear details of the pancreas, pancreatic duct, the gall bladder,
liver and the bile ducts. Gastrointestinal conditions such as pancreatic diseases like stones, cysts, tumours, inflammation, pancreatitis, duct anomalies and others are better viewed with this method, as compared to image modalities like the CT Scan and MRI. Another key benefit of this procedure is that there is no exposure to radiation. Furthermore, benign and malignant tumours of the oesophagus, stomach, pancreas and colon can be evaluated from the gastrointestinal tract. The size of the tumour, its depth of invasion, and whether it has spread to the surrounding lymph nodes and organs, can be determined. An endoscopic ultrasound is currently the best method to evaluate the pancreas and pancreatic lesions. This safe procedure is carried out at Royal Bahrain Hospital in a short time under simple sedation like any other endoscopy.

Silah’s CEO, Ricardo Langwieder-Görner, delivered a keynote speech highlighting the latest customer experience trends and how digital is transforming the service industry. And Silah Gulf was awarded two industry accolades – the regional ‘Problem Solver’ award and ‘Social Inclusiveness’ award. Both were bestowed in recognition of the company’s video conferencing contact centre solutions catering to the needs of the hearing impaired in Bahrain. Commenting on the event, Ricardo Langwieder-Görner says: “We live in the era of customer experience, but while digital dominance, robotic process automation, AI and data supremacy are transforming the way we do business, technology alone will not meet today’s customer expectations. Today’s business solutions need to embrace new technologies, but with a human touch and a purpose to add value to society. Frank Turner – Be More Kind What’s the story?
After 2011’s England Keep My Bones, British singer-songwriter Frank Turner got himself in trouble with punters for allegedly trashing the political left as his platitudes toward libertarianism – which he later defined as “classic liberalism” – came to the fore. The backlash, albeit predictable, was cause enough for Turner to abandon politics in his music to focus on personal issues on 2013’s Tape Deck Heart and 2015’s Positive Songs for Negative People. Given recent historical developments such as the 2016 American presidential election, Brexit, the rise of white supremacy, fascism, and general intolerance, he’s returned from the sidelines and entered the fray.
Worth a listen?
Throughout Be More Kind, Turner exhorts listeners to practise compassion and kindness because, in doing so, we create a stand against hatred. Be More Kind is musically inventive in its use of punk, folk, soul and electronica but deceptively simple in its message, which is as complex as the times we live in. Standout track is 1933, where the blasting guitars and clattering drums underscore its observant urgency. Punk and soul meet as horns and layered backing vocal choruses meet the hook and burn of popping snares, hi-hats and punchy six-strings.
Verdict: Another superb release from the British star.

Jon Hopkins – Singularity
Kenny Barron – Concentric Circles
DJ Koze – Knock Knock
Singularity is the proper follow-up to Jon Hopkins’ 2013 breakthrough Immunity, a spellbinding album of highly intricate, glitchy techno which nevertheless felt organic, and even classical at times. Like that album, Singularity is filled with frayed feedback, skilfully crafted beats and gentle piano melodies, as well as the occasional breathy vocals. This time out, there seems to be an extra shot of adrenaline added, and the album seems to reflect a deeper spiritual quest, both inwards and outwards.
While Barron has never sounded anything short of virtuosic, his skills have only deepened over the years. He commands the album, framing his musicians with richly textured chord voicings one minute, and launching into evocative improvisational asides the next. What’s particularly refreshing is how immediate and of-the-moment the album feels. Concentric Circles is the sound of a jazz master continuing to push forward, buoyed by his bandmates and the lessons of the past.
DJ Koze, always viewed as a vastly underrated figure on the techno scene, manages to push his sample manipulations further over the edge than before, with shredded, vocal mutations popping up all over the place, even on some of the album’s most dramatic songs. This lends itself to a very strange dynamic. Bonfire is framed around a sample from Bon Iver’s Calgary, which is seemingly mocked by dripping beats, malfunctioning CD noises and lumbering, growling bass eruptions. It sounds funny and preposterous, and amazingly, it works, just like the rest of the album.

God of War Verdict: One of the best games ever. Rating:
What is it?
God of War is a sequel and reimagining of the iconic PlayStation franchise. His vengeance against the Gods of Olympus years behind him, Kratos now lives as a man in the realm of Norse Gods and monsters. Together with his son Atreus, the pair will venture into the brutal Norse wilds and fight to fulfil a deeply personal quest.
Gameplay
This startling reimagining of God of War deconstructs the core elements that defined the series – satisfying combat, breathtaking scale and a powerful narrative – and fuses them anew. With an overthe-shoulder free camera that brings the player closer to the action than ever before, battles are more thrilling than ever. The new Leviathan Axe is one of the video game’s greatest weapons, allowing for a variety of attacks, while new abilities retain the defining spirit of the franchise while presenting a vision of violent conflict that forges new ground in the genre.
Sea of Thieves
The freedom of the pirate life awaits in Sea of Thieves, a shared-world adventure game filled with unknown dangers and loot for the taking. Be the pirates you want to be and share adventures with friends in a world where every sail on the horizon is another crew of players with unknown intent.
www.bahrainthismonth.com
Graphics
God of War’s single-camera shot style – that, unless you die, never cuts once from title screen to ending credits – is a subtle effect that doesn’t strike at first. But when you explore and fight your way through the story, it serves to highlight the power of some of the larger-scale monsters. It’s easy to sigh at the beauty of the game; the texture of grassy hills in the distance feels real, the sky is photorealistic, light dances dazzlingly off shinier surfaces, and every gnarled monster conveys a sense of decay.
Jurassic Park Evolution
Based on the iconic film franchise, Jurassic World Evolution expands on the official mythology and puts players in charge of cinema’s greatest tourist destination. Create and manage your own Jurassic World, as the game places you in control of operations on the legendary island of Isla Nublar and the surrounding islands of the Muertes Archipelago. Every choice leads to a different path and spectacular challenges arise when “life, uh, finds a way”.

iNaturalist is an enormous online community of nature lovers that’s now part of the California Academy of Sciences. The core Seek app is one of the most popular nature apps out there because of its ability to help you identify the plants and animals around you by connecting to hundreds of thousands of scientists and naturalists.
The Good
This app challenges you to take your nature knowledge up a notch by sending you on quests to collect badges by photographing the flora and fauna you’re most likely to find in your area. This not only satisfies the addictive nature of collecting, but also improves your knowledge of nature at the same time.
The Bad
The app would be much better if it let you add your own notes to your entries (including additional photos/video) and also a capability to share them. There are also frequent bugs, including graphical, loading, hangs and crashes.
App: Seek by iNaturalist Rating: Verdict: A useful tool for nature lovers.

The Plot
Dogfather Memorial Event On behalf of the Cat Society of Bahrain & Pet Animals, a memorial event was held to celebrate the life of Tony Waters (The Dogfather). Ben, Sarah & Yaqoob
While the Avengers and their allies have continued to protect the world from threats too large for any one hero to handle, a new danger has emerged from the cosmic shadows: Thanos. A despot of intergalactic infamy, his goal is to collect all six Infinity Stones, artefacts of unimaginable power, and use them to inflict his twisted will on all of reality. Everything the Avengers have fought for has led up to this moment – the fate of Earth and existence itself has never been more uncertain.
Worth Watching?
This is a blockbuster film that’s been 10 years in the making, its plot hinted at and scattered throughout 18 other movies in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. It features 30 or so characters, each with their own complex backstories and motivations. It sounds ridiculous, and feels impossible. But that’s precisely what makes the final product such a monumental achievement. Masterfully directed by Anthony and Joe Russo, Infinity War is bold, brainy filmmaking at its very best: the kind that will lift your spirits, blow your mind and shatter your soul – occasionally in the same scene. It demonstrates on an epic scale what Marvel has known all along: that special effects and tightly choreographed action are there to serve the story. For all its blockbuster spectacle (and there’s almost too much of that), the film works because it’s anchored by the heart, humour and humanity of its characters.

A Cultural Gem Riga, Latvia’s capital, is set on the Baltic Sea at the mouth of the River Daugava. It’s the largest city in the three Baltic states, Estonia, Lithuania and Latvia, and is considered a cultural centre well regarded for its many museums and concert halls. The medieval, pedestrian-only Old Town is home to the buzzing Livu Square as well as a good selection of shops, restaurants, bars and nightclubs. This fascinating area is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and great for several afternoons and evenings of strolling. Alberta Street, or Alberta iela, is Riga’s Art Nouveau gem, full of splendid historical buildings erected in a short period of time – from 1901 to 1908 – with each standing alone as an inimitable 20th century architectural achievement. Eight buildings are now recognised as architectural monuments of national significance. The city’s central market is huge, in fact one of the largest in Europe, taking up five airship hangars! There you’ll find a huge range of produce from cheese and smoked meats to honey and fresh vegetables. And Riga is also known for its parks, which make it a seriously green city. The Botanical Gardens, belonging to the University of Latvia, are on the outskirts of the city and include glasshouses and a butterfly house. And Bastejkalna Park is home to waterways, a canal and pretty bridges as well as interesting historical statuary. Riga is making a name for itself as a culinary destination. To kill two birds with one stone check out the Biblioteka N°1 restaurant located in the beautiful Vermanes park in the heart of the city. Chef Maris Jansons has created a unique ‘library’ of contemporary Latvian cuisine, in which seasonal products of the highest quality are combined with high-level modern cooking techniques in a renowned degustation menu. Turkish Airlines flies to Riga via Istanbul. It’s a 10-hour journey, so not exactly a weekend jaunt, but definitely worth considering over the Eid break. Temperatures for June are in the low to mid 20s, so it could be a welcome break from our scorching summer. Enjoy.

ARIES March 21 – April 19 Many Arians will see June as a month of consolidation and financial gain as you seek to organise your finances into a more manageable structure. A bonus or windfall will allow you to clear debts and free yourself of monthly commitments and you may also find that those who owe you money will surprise you by paying back a loan before it was originally due. The job front could also see a move on the horizon and the possibility of a pay increase will prove decisive. Card of the Month — The World
Prosperity could well be yours this month – solving several financial issues that seemed insurmountable earlier this year. However, the real message for June is not your turnaround in fortunes but in your attitude to those near you, who may need some monetary support of their own. On a separate issue and yet still connected with finance, your good luck could be hampered by one outstanding bill which you have been putting off paying.
