Bahrain This Month May 2019

Editorial Director Liz O’Reilly Contributors Behnaz Sanjana, Dick Potter, Zilia Monteiro Print Production Manager Sabu Sebastian Layout and Graphics Romeo San Miguel, Hatem Monem

It’s hard to believe that the Holy Month has come around again so quickly, but let me take this opportunity to wish each and every one of you Ramadan Kareem. In the spirit of the month, our main feature in this issue brings you details of more than 20 fabulous Iftar and Ghabga options to suit friends, families or business gatherings. We’ve also taken expert advice on both wellness and mindfulness during the period of fasting, to help you get the most from this special time. And, though Ramadan is almost upon us, there are season closing events to be enjoyed as well as various cultural activities taking place throughout the month. You’ll find all the details in our Happenings section, which is regularly updated online at www.bahrainthismonth.com Elsewhere this month, in the interview section, Egyptian Ambassador, HE Soha El Far, reflects on her time in the Kingdom and how impressed she has been, particularly by the number of women taking important roles in society. There are also words from hospitality veteran Abdul Rahim Al Sayed, who reflects on the state of the industry as he heads towards retirement. And author Rehan Khan tells of his journey from telecoms specialist to published author. Lucky Liz got the chance to try one of the region’s most exclusive dining experiences, she shares her thoughts with you in the dining section – no, of course I’m not even a little bit jealous. And Dick got behind the wheel of the latest offering from Mercedes – no, not jealous there either! In the Lifestyle section, we take a look at the millionaires’ playground St Barth’s and, by contrast, there’s a selection of Bahrain’s traditional coffee shops urging you to take a stroll through the souq and enjoy some authentic island atmosphere. As always, we have news from the worlds of motoring, business and dining and our regular round-ups of technology, films and music – in short, something for everyone in your monthly guide to a great way of life.

BARISTA CREATIONS A new approach to milky coffee from the experts at Nespresso

A

s three quarters of coffee drinkers globally enjoy a white coffee, Nespresso launches its latest blends, expertly crafted specifically to go with milk. The company has spent six years studying the interaction between coffee and milk to develop the Barista Creations milk coffee range for which the development team experimented with 18 coffee origins from around the world, focusing on the techniques of roasting and grinding, to perfect a milky coffee at home with the Nespresso milk machines.

Barista Creations: the new permanent coffee range Those looking for bitterness, acidity, body, bold flavour and aromas in their cup of coffee with milk can find it all in this new range. To match every taste, each creation has been developed for its unique alchemy with milk. From a small cortado to larger cappuccinos, a variety of recipes can be created from each one. They can also be paired with plant-based milk alternatives, such as oat or soya milks.

Behind the blend “The journey to find the perfectly balanced coffee with milk was inspired by professional baristas’ craftsmanship, and by questioning our consumers’ expectations and motivation to drink coffee with milk,” said Karsten Ranitzsch, Head of Coffee at Nespresso. “Our Coffee Experts therefore started by consulting consumers. Only after gaining a thorough understanding of it while taking the diversity of the responses into account, did we start to develop our new blends.” From 18 different coffee origins, around 20,000 cappuccinos were tested and over 120 coffee prototypes were produced. Through sophisticated trials, the experts pushed the boundaries of roasting and grinding in order to find the key attributes for a coffee blend to be drunk with milk.

Original coffee range of Barista Creations • Chiaro (meaning ‘light’ in Italian) – inspired by Brooklyn baristas, Chiaro is for smooth and sweet coffee and milk recipes. With an ultra-light roast, it has sweet caramel and biscuit notes when milk is added. • Scuro (meaning ‘dark’ in Italian) – inspired by baristas in Melbourne, Scuro is for the perfect balance between milk and roasted coffee notes. Its profile is intense, roasted, and well balanced when milk is added. • Corto (meaning ‘short’ in Italian) – inspired by Spanish baristas, Corto has a powerful taste and a syrupy texture for recipes with a little touch of milk. The blend is very dark, spicy, intense roasted and smoky when drunk with milk. Ideal for a traditional Spanish cortado.

Nespresso milk machines for all your milk coffee recipes The new permanent coffee range presents the perfect pairing for the Nespresso milk machines designed to bring out the textural experience of an indulgent milky coffee. The Nespresso Latissima machines offer the convenience of enjoying many excellent coffee and milk recipes at home at the simple touch of a button. With

Nespresso’s coffee expertise and the venturi system of the machine, white coffee drinkers can get the right milk foam for their favourite cups. Any coffee lover can become a barista at home thanks to the Nespresso Creatista machines with which it becomes easy to create authentic top-quality Latte Art coffees thanks to Breville’s innovative, automatic and expert steam pipe. These versatile machines have adjustable settings for coffee volume, milk temperature and milk texture. Those looking to upgrade their coffee and milk experience can also purchase the New Limited Editions chocolates, for those extra indulgent coffee moments. To add to the luxury coffee experience, customers in Bahrain can now find all their Nespresso requirements at a new booth just opened at Seef Mall Muharraq. This brings the brand’s presence in the country to three outlets, with the Nespresso Boutique at Level 1, City Centre Bahrain and the Nespresso Booth at Gate 5, Seef Mall. Barista Creations coffee will be available from May 15, 2019 at Nespresso Boutique Level 1, City Centre Bahrain, Nespresso Booth, Gate 5, Seef Mall, Nespresso Booth, 1st floor, Seef Mall Muharraq, Customer Care Tollfree 80 001-999 or online at www.buynespresso.com/bh/en

End of an Era, p34

HE Soha El Far

AN ADMIRING AMBASSADOR Egyptian Ambassador, HE Soha El Far, has been in Bahrain for three years now, having previously been stationed in Argentina. And, in her time here, she tells Liz O’Reilly she has fallen in love with our little island and its people. Particularly conscious of the role women play in the Kingdom, she says: “I have enjoyed this posting very much. It’s my first experience of working in an Arab country and I was very impressed with the openness of the society. I am the first lady Egyptian Ambassador in the Gulf [she was also her country’s first female ambassador to Argentina] and being a woman has not inhibited my abilities in any way. “I particularly have admiration for the women I have encountered. I have never met a Bahraini woman who stays at home; if they don’t have a specific job, they work in charity or in other ways. Women have been contributing to the society here for a long time.” As a career diplomat since 1989, Her Excellency adds: “Something else that impressed me very much is the idea of the majlis. Here, people can go and meet the King and members of government, who will listen to their complaints and concerns. I have never seen that anywhere else and it is both refreshing and effective.” Her role in the Kingdom is to improve an already excellent working and trade relationship between Bahrain and Egypt and to serve the 23,000-strong Egyptian community who are found across fields such as law, medicine, education and banking. Current trade figures between the two countries stand at USD270 million per year – with aluminium going outwards from Bahrain and vegetables being a major import from Egypt. Her Excellency says: “This is www.bahrainthismonth.com

low, but we are working on expanding it. The real challenge is the implementation of agreements that are already in place. “What’s also needed is for interchange between the business communities of our two countries so that Egyptians come to view Bahrain as a good investment prospect, not just for the Kingdom itself but also for its value as a gateway to the wider region and through its existing free trade agreements. Of course, we want Bahrainis to get to know Egypt in the same way.” One of the ways the embassy is working towards this is by encouraging trade delegations – there was a significant trade visitor exchange from Egypt to Bahrain in 2017 followed by one from Bahrain to Egypt in 2018. Egyptian business people regularly attend commercial conferences in the Kingdom with a view to expanding the trade relationship. Her Excellency adds that the two countries can also benefit from each other in terms of business practice. She says: “For example, Tamkeen; how it’s been set up and is working with SMES [small and medium enterprises] is an experience that’s worth studying and applying in some way.” And tourism, too, is on her radar. She explains that there are several Bahraini travel companies working to broaden their countrymen’s experience of Egypt which she hopes will lead to ever greater understanding and friendship between the two countries. Her Excellency concludes: “I feel that relations are improving in all sectors of society and Bahraini people have come to know about Egypt. Bahrain has been a great support to Egypt through the revolution – it is very rewarding to feel you are working in a place that supports and understands your country.”

interview

Meeting up with the affable, charming and indefatigable Abdul Rahim Al Sayed at his office in the Golden Tulip Hotel recently, provided an opportunity to delve into Bahrain’s history of hospitality. Abdul Rahim Al Sayed

GEORGE F MIDDLETON

END OF AN ERA

A

s he looks back at his career and ponders the possibility of retirement, Abdul Rahim reflects on his 40 years in the hotel industry. A former Bahrain international footballer, plucked from relative obscurity to receive training in the telecommunication and hospitality industries, Abdul Rahim was the second ever Bahraini national (after Mohamed Buzizi) to assume the position of general manager at a Manama hotel in 1981. “To be perfectly honest,” he states, “I entered the hotel field by mistake. I used to work for Cable & Wireless and had an assistant called Jaffer with whom I worked very closely.” Unbeknown to Abdul Rahim, Jaffer decided to apply on both their behalves for a hotel manager’s training position at the Delmon Hotel which, at that time, was one of the most luxurious outlets in Bahrain. Jaffer was never in the running for the advertised role but Abdul Rahim was chosen after a series of interviews. The selection process wasn’t the end of it though, since the British personnel manager expressed disapproval about Abdul Rahim’s dress sense. When the hotel owner, who happened to be the late Majid Zayani, heard about the rejection, he called Abdul Rahim to his office and offered him BD200 to purchase a brand new suit to solve the problem. “I was shy to accept this extremely kind gesture and therefore I initially refused his kind offer but eventually agreed to take the money 34 May 2019

Over my four decades in the industry, I’ve trained Bahrainis as they have the right to be trained in order to ensure them the opportunity of promotion” on the understanding that it would be treated as a loan; deducted from my salary over several months,” he remembers. As a local sports celebrity at the time, Abdul Rahim did have the privilege of mixing with the likes of international World Cup footballers Pele and Santos, who happened to be on a Gulf tour soon after he started work at the Delmon Hotel. Naturally, he managed to convince them to stay at his establishment. Impressed by his initiative and seeing his future potential, Mr Zayani decided to send the young man to Cornell University in the USA for a hospitality management course at his own expense. On Abdul Rahim’s return, he was offered the position of assistant training manager at the hotel. He was then offered practical training at the Chelsea Holiday Inn, next to Harrods, in London; which was also owned by the Zayani family.

After further training overseas, Abdul Rahim was again promoted to assistant general manager and, soon after, Rashid Zayani charged him to train his son for a career in the hotel industry. On his first day at work, the young novice arrived well-dressed and ‘raring to go’. “When he arrived on the second day dressed in jeans and a T-shirt, I had no option but to discipline him,” he recalls. To this day, when chairing meetings with hoteliers and explaining that his knowledge of the industry is more than just superficial, HE Zayed bin Rashid Al Zayani, Minister of Industry, Commerce & Tourism, often refers to this experience with Abdul Rahim Al Sayed, who gave him his first warning letter! “Over my four decades in the industry, I’ve trained Bahrainis as they have the right to be trained, in order to ensure them the opportunity of promotion,” he says. “I was once called to the police station due to a case lodged by one of my employees who was upset that I was forcing him to study. As far as I was concerned, it was his luck that I was trying to help him to improve himself. He eventually resigned though,” laughs Abdul Rahim. In conclusion, he reflects on the challenges faced by Bahrain’s tourism sector. Increased competition amongst local hotels combined with liberalisation in Saudi Arabia is not helping the local market situation and young hotel GMs have to be prepared for a tougher life. His major regret is that on his departure, only one Bahraini general manager will remain. www.bahrainthismonth.com

interview

Former islander, author Rehan Khan, has just seen his book A Tudor Turk launched in London. Between book fairs and speeches to eager readers, he told us his story. Rehan Khan

LIZ O’REILLY

A GROWN-UP AMBITION Please tell us a little about your Bahrain associations and do you still have connections to the Kingdom? My family and I lived in Bahrain from 2003 to 2006. Our kids were very young at the time and we had a really great experience of bringing them up in a family-friendly environment. I was working for one of the telecom companies at the time and I still have a lot of friends from my days in Bahrain, both related to work and others we met.

The best way of describing A Tudor Turk is, it’s Mission Impossible in the 16th century.”

Are you now writing full-time? I wish! 36 May 2019

What was your inspiration? Travelling to the Topkapi Palace in Istanbul and gazing upon the Staff of Moses and wondering how did it get here? The Staff plays a part in the novel. How did you go about researching it? I normally read a couple of academic books from the period to start with. This provides great context before I start working on my setting, characters and plot.

What was your journey from Batelco to published author? Whilst in Bahrain I wrote my first film script, which received some interest but didn’t really move forward. At the time, a friend of mine suggested I write a novel as a more expressive medium. I didn’t really take it up until 2009 when my daughter, who was six at the time, asked me at breakfast: “Daddy what do you want to be when you grow up?“ At the time I was working as an executive in a firm and had real difficulty answering the question. But it sparked a desire to do what I had always wanted, since I was a nine-year-old – which was to become a writer. From 2009, I started taking the prospect of writing much more seriously. I still have a fulltime job – writers don’t get paid very much! Is this book your first literary venture? My first two fantasy novels were self-published. On the back of those I was approached by a UK publisher who wanted to work with me on a project – we discussed a couple of options and agreed on historical fiction.

be recovered and time is running out. The novel takes us from Istanbul to Alexandria, Venice and London in 1591.

How long did the whole process take from idea to publication? About 18 months. Where has it been published so far? It’s published from the UK but available globally. Any bookshop in the world can order it. Are you enjoying the promotion? We had the London launch at Waterstones on Gower Street a few weeks back. My publisher arranged for some actors to dress up as characters from the period. It was really very well received. Will there be a sequel? I’ve just finished it and sent it to my editor. Expect it to be out in February 2020. So, what’s the book about? The best way of describing A Tudor Turk is, it’s Mission Impossible in the 16th century. Like any MI story, something has been stolen, it needs to

Keeping Athletes In Mind Gulf Air, the national carrier of the Kingdom, gives cyclists an extra baggage allowance to include one free bicycle over and above their original ticket allowance. The bicycle must be packed within an acceptable purposedesigned cover, weighing 15kg or less. The new policy has been introduced in response to an increasing demand from athletes who fly to attend and participate in various sporting events within the global Gulf Air network. Gulf

Air’s CEO Krešimir Kučko said: “Gulf Air is enhancing its baggage allowance for athletes to promote a healthy lifestyle within its customer base. By allowing athletes to take their sport equipment for free – over and above their original baggage entitlement – we help make their travel logistics and journeys much easier and hassle free”. Earlier this year Gulf Air announced that one free golf bag would be allowed for golfers. May 2019 39

A Triumphant Rework, p42

My Life in Cars DICK POTTER I've just seen on the BBC news that there are plans afoot by those safety bods in the United Kingdom to have an imposed speed inhibitor fitted to cars. This sends a shiver down my spine. Yet another measure by people – who probably ride bicycles and hug trees – who want us to protect ourselves, since we all clearly seem to be hell-bent on self-destruction. Big brother wins yet again. We can't eat or smoke in our cars either, in some countries, and Volvo is now talking about introducing a cockpit eyeball scanner. This little gem will be able to detect if you've had a drink or are tired. If it deems that you have or you are, it will immobilise the car until it determines you're safe. Whatever next? Enforced coffee breaks to stay alert? Oxygen pumped in? Goodness knows what the people in the fast car manufacturing business think of being basically targeted to be hobbled. What is the point of having a fast car? We may as well go around in little electric boxes with four wheels on. Where is the thrill of fast pursuit and an adrenalin rush to be sourced from? Many governments are clearly forcing thrill seekers off the road and soon the only avenue will be to take our cars or bikes onto an expensive regulated sterile track to go fast – but only if we can switch the immobiliser off! I mean, seriously, what's the point of having a road performance car if you can't perform on the road? The Germans have it nailed – trust the Germans – it's called the Nürburgring and it's a track for the public where, for a minimal fee, you can drive your vehicle on the track as you want. If you crash, they'll clean up the bits of metal – albeit for a nominal fee. Should you bend a barrier, there's a charge per metre for that also. If you www.bahrainthismonth.com

hurt or kill yourself, they will tidy that up also, it's entirely your call. No namby-pamby ‘Health and Safety’ nanny state there. So, what about setting up something similar here in Bahrain? Yes, I hear you dear readers, I mean apart from the Sheikh Salman highway! Our foresighted leaders brought the F1 here – which is fantastic. Now, what about a road circuit that we can thrill ourselves on? We would pay for the honour of using it of course – think of it as another lucrative money earner for the Kingdom. Foreign and local car owners could bring, store and drive their cars here – drive them as they're supposed to be driven. There could be bespoke garages and warehouses, service provisions, coffee shops to screech to a halt outside, with provisions to sit outside and admire your own and others’ wheels – be they two or four. If you bend your super car, the super car lads will be there to fix it. Loads of yummy business opportunities all around! The Nürburgring is great for cars and bikes to do what they are built and tuned-up to do. For bikes the same happens every year in the Isle of Man, TT event. On that weekend, on a dedicated day – Sunday I believe – is when the public road, which is the track, is open to the bikes and quite literally anything goes. There are no limits and, yes, some bikes do crash and some riders die but it’s their choice and they know the risks, same as a sky diver knows the risk of the parachute not opening as he throws himself out of a plane, which is of course part of the thrill. So please, let our Kingdom's leaders look into constructing an open-road facility where we can drive, or ride, to our limits; if we mess it up, so be it. We were not made to be pushed and confined because we humans strive to excel and push boundaries, it’s in our genetic make-up to take it to the limit! Safe driving all!

Mercedes GLC 250 Coupe SUV

A Triumphant Rework Dick Potter gets behind the wheel of the latest offering from Mercedes-Benz. The Mercedes GLC 250 Coupe SUV. Quite a mouthful huh? But then, it’s quite a car. The predecessor of the GLC was the GLK, which Mercedes cleverly introduced to the market before their competitors cottoned on, realising, and, more importantly, from a business angle, cashing in on the market explosion of the mid-size premium quality SUV. That, to be fair, did not fare well. Still being fair, come on, I own a Mercedes – albeit one nearly as old as I am – their rivals in the market were the Audi Q5, the BMW X3 and the Range Rover Evoque. Nothing in that line-up to be sniffed at you’ll agree. However, kudos to Mercedes, they upped the mark and redressed the competition successfully with the GLC. The 2019 GLC really is an excellent drive in the luxury compact SUV market area. For my techie readers, the engines come in a multitude of muscle sizes. I had the 241 turbocharged two-litre, four-cylinder job. Great for regular and commuting use. But if you want more oomph, then I’d suggest you go for the V6, AMG GLC 43 which presents with a not too shabby 362 horses under the bonnet. Alternatively, there’s the awesomely quick V8, AMG GLC 63 with 469 or 503 stampeding horses which might fit your bill? Furthermore, it 42 May 2019

will beat the Porsche Macan or Audi SQ5 in a straight pace, or so I’m reliably informed, ahem, not having actually tried it myself you understand – well, to date I haven’t. (Ed, when am I scheduled to do that?) All models present with a nine-speed transmission and paddle shift (which you know I’m a tad biased towards, oh, all right then, I love it) for smooth, quick gear changing. My GLC 250 with 241hp was zippy around town and smoothly fast on the highway. I personally preferred the sport mode over comfort, as I like a harder ride from a firmer suspension. Moving on to the interior. Wow. That’s it really. I should imagine it’s leaving rivals a tad red-, and green-, faced! A glossy wood console with metal highlights across the whole dash makes for a very attractive look indeed. It’s complete with upholstery that Mercedes calls Artico, which looks and feels like leather but is actually man-made. If you want real skin, then the Merc folk can do that too. But, heads up, that’ll be a tad more dosh. The GLC has fully electric, adjustable front seats with four lumbar support positions – a blessing for my poor back – and steering wheel position adjustment. The visibility for the driver and passengers is seriously good. The infotainment system in Mercedes, I must say, is one of my favourite of all car

manufacturers – wonder if Merc could install it in my trusty ancient model? I especially like the standard central dial controller which, once quickly learned, is so simple to use and is ergonomically cool. There are a few welcome additions from its predecessor. These include, heated seats – interesting for Bahrain – a three-zone climate control and an optional offroad package – see above note re, interesting for Bahrain. The reversing camera and front and rear sensors with a semi-autonomous system help you to steer the car into those tight parking spaces, at the mall anyone? I would have hoped for a bit more trunk storage, however, the back seats fold down giving you enough space for the piano and orchestral woodwind section, should you be disposed to carting them about town. The Missus loved the big door pocket storage area. I swear she almost fitted her substantially large handbag into the central console compartment thingy – no mean feat that! This GLC really is a great buy. You get a lot of bang for your buck and it has a superior feel of class and opulence to its competition. Mercedes, they seldom go wrong. I quite literally vroomed back to the Al Haddad showroom at 4.59pm, a minute to spare before pumpkin hour, and very reluctantly handed the key back...sob. A Double Win Al Haddad Motors took home two customer service awards at this year’s Mercedes-Benz Cars Middle East (MBCME) Customer Services Conference that was held in Dubai. The company received the Dealer Retail Standard Fulfilment award and the Best Planning and Forecasting award based on its performance in 2018. The awards were presented by the president and CEO of MBCME, Mark De Haes and the director of customer

services, Thilo Grossman, to Al Haddad Motors GM, Warren Hudson, who was accompanied by aftersales manager, Ian Beattie, parts manager, Jorge Roldao, and marketing manager, Imran Ali. “These awards merely mark the starting line and not the finishing line for Al Haddad Motors. Our Customer Services department has embarked on a journey to improve procedures and performance in every single aspect of our daily business,” said Warren Hudson.

Challenging Tradition Infiniti debuted the Qs Inspiration, a sports sedan concept for the electrified era, at Auto Shanghai 2019. The vehicle offers a new perspective on the design and layout of the sports sedan, with an elevated driving position and highperformance electrified allwheel drive (e-AWD) power. Representing the brand’s desire to challenge tradition, the Qs Inspiration previews a forthcoming Infiniti production model and hints at the company’s electrified future. The concept’s all-new flexible architecture has been developed specifically to accommodate high-performance electrified powertrains, and enables a reinterpretation of traditional ‘three-box’ sedan design. Infiniti designers and engineers have been able to adapt the mechanical layout and physical proportions of the car, engaging drivers and keeping them connected to the road, while providing a sense of elevation and control. Three decades on from the arrival of the technology-laden Q45 sedan, the Qs Inspiration features a low-mounted powertrain and potent e-AWD system. The raised driving position offers a clearer view of the road ahead, without a raised body to compromise dynamics. www.bahrainthismonth.com

Rolls-Royce Motor Cars has announced that Jozef Kabaň has been appointed head of design. Kabaň, 46, is an experienced and talented designer, having spent the majority of his career at a senior level in the automotive industry. He joins Rolls-Royce Motor Cars from the BMW Group where he has been head of Design Studio BMW since 2017. Passionate about car design and art from an early age, and with an obsession for detail, Kabaň completed his studies in Bratislava and London, concluding with a Master’s of Art in Car Design at the Royal College of Art in London. Aged just 20, Kabaň was one of the youngest ever designers to join the VW Group. He progressed rapidly, and in 1998 was awarded project lead for the Bugatti Veyron, for which he designed the exterior. He gained global recognition for the project, demonstrating his ability, even at this early stage in his career, to combine the automotive world with those of luxury and art. He later worked with Audi AG and then Skoda Auto where he was recognised for revolutionising the manufacturer’s design ethos. He also maintained design responsibility for small volume projects, including limited and special editions and show cars.

New Model Unveiled Nissan unveiled an all-new sedan and displayed two electrified concept vehicles at this year’s Shanghai International Automobile Exhibition. The sedan features Nissan’s latest distinctive design cues and offers an array of technologies that embody Nissan Intelligent Mobility, the company’s vision for changing how cars are powered, driven and integrated into society. The IMs defines a new vehicle segment – the elevated sports sedan. The vehicle’s design takes advantage of its 100-per-cent electric powertrain, with the battery located under the body. Along with an extended wheelbase, this results in an elevated, spacious cabin that allows for an innovative seating layout. In autonomous driving mode, the IMs features completely hands-free operation. In manual mode, it delivers the exciting, high-performance driving experience that only an advanced electric vehicle can provide.

A World of Luxury The Audi A7 Sportback is the ‘2019 World Luxury Car’. The vehicle is the second Audi to take home the award after the Audi A8 won it last year. The awards were presented at the New York International Auto Show. The World Car jury, consisting of 86 members from 24 countries, voted to distinguish the Audi A7 Sportback as the best new luxury car on the world market. From the Middle East region Suhaib Shashaa is a valued jury member for the UAE and Mohammad Zaro for Jordan. With the design of a coupe, the space of a sedan, and the variability of an Avant—the new Audi A7 Sportback combines the best of three worlds. It is a new style of Gran Turismo, offering systematic digitalisation, a dynamic driving experience, and a space concept that combines a wide range of customer requirements. 44 May 2019

Following a comprehensive upgrade, one of Porsche’s most popular models, the Macan, is now available in Bahrain. The brand’s compact SUV has evolved in terms of comfort and driving dynamics, with two engine versions available at launch, the Macan and the more powerful Macan S. The Macan comes to the starting line with an enhanced 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder engine, producing 252hp and delivering a maximum torque of 370 Nm. It accelerates from zero to 100km/h in 6.5 seconds (when equipped with the optional Sport Chrono Package) and reaches a top speed of 227km/h. The Macan S is powered by a new V6 engine, which was first introduced in the new generations of the Panamera and Cayenne. The high-tech power unit produces 354hp (an increase of 14hp compared to its predecessor) and a

torque output of 480 Nm. As a result, acceleration to 100km/h is just 5.1 seconds with the optional Sport Chrono Package; its top speed is 254km/h. The vehicle dynamics of the Macan remain a principle feature. The revamped chassis increases driving pleasure, offering stability and improved comfort thanks to newly developed mixed-size tyres, enhanced brakes and the intelligent all-wheel drive Porsche Traction Management (PTM) system. The range of standard equipment has been further enhanced. Customers can now enjoy features such as a panoramic sunroof, automatically dimming mirrors and ParkAssist in front and rear with reversing camera, at no extra cost. And a further evolved design language is visible in the new Macan, giving it an even more distinctive and confident appearance.

DINING

this month

Executive chef Yann Bernard Lejard

The Stage of Good Food, p49

An Experimental Triumph The world’s fourth La Table Krug has opened its doors at The Ritz-Carlton, Bahrain, making it possibly the region’s most exclusive fine-dining experience. Liz O’Reilly brings you the lowdown. Mention the name of a bubbly brand so swanky that even The Ritz-Carlton’s expansive GM, Bernard de Villèle, says: “Even I didn’t taste it until I was 59 years old!” And you can assume you’re in for something pretty special. And, let me say straight off, my evening at La Table Krug by Y, the Y in honour of executive chef Yann Bernard Lejard, certainly did not disappoint. Dubbed ‘rough luxury’ this venue, ensuring exclusivity with its tiny 14-16 covers arranged around a long table to mimic French country house dining, plays with colours and textures, the super-luxe of Reidel crystal glass wear and bronze or silver tableware, paired with rough-seeming (but, no doubt, seriously expensive) raw linen napkins and chargers from Bahrain’s own Nada pottery, each bearing the imprint of chef Yann’s hand and some funky paint splashes. The restaurant is a partnership with the venerable Champagne house and the menu, which changes daily, is known as an Experimence. An eight-course degustation feast, each morsel accompanied by exquisite grape pairings and, of course, glasses of the luxury namesake. My visit came right before opening night and we were lucky enough to share the table with, guest of honour, Jean Michel Cousteau, French oceanographic explorer, environmentalist, educator and film producer. The first son of renowned ocean explorer Jacques Cousteau had visited the Kingdom on a two-day Ritz Kids educational and lecture programme. Thus, our Experimence paid heavy tribute to the seas with dishes such as hamour with lemon and ginger, Foie Gras and caviar – the local fish, which I would never www.bahrainthismonth.com

have dreamed to attempt raw, was perfect with the heat of the lemon and ginger marinade and a really surprising choice. There was also cauliflower with coriander, fresh flower leaves and langoustine, another unusual pairing that set our palates for what was to follow. For me, the stand-out dish of the evening would have to be the spaghetti with crab, white truffle and lobster oil. In fact, this concoction proved so popular that Bernard de Villèle called for, and received, an enthusiastic round of applause for it when chef Yann visited the table. The pristine strands of pasta, cooked lightly al dente, coiled around a centre of crab meat, the truffle accompaniment perfectly gauged to complement rather than overpower the tender and succulent flesh. It was a flavour explosion whose piquancy demanded the utmost concentration and, hence, for the first time, the table fell silent unified in delight. I will confess, I am not a huge fan of duck. There’s little meat on it and it takes a great deal of skill to cook it perfectly and avoid the very-easily-achieved rubberiness. Suffice to say, chef Yann knows what he’s doing on this score. The duck with shallot, chive and wasabi (for which, I am, admittedly, a sucker) literally melted in the mouth. The texture was akin to the most succulent cut of Wagyu, while the gamey flavour of the bird married with the tang of the wasabi to create an almost sensual contrast on the tongue. In honour of Jean Michel Cousteau, our meal finished with a delightfully whimsical sea creature – a turtle – thankfully crafted from raspberries and decadently rich, dark chocolate fondant mousse. To be honest, by this stage, I was almost too full to manage another morsel and it was almost too pretty to eat. But, that’s a lot of almosts, so, of course, I dug in and floated gently into foodie heaven with spoon in one hand and bubbles in the other.

ramadanmindfulness

Resha Erheim

Mindfulness in Ramadan Expert counsellor Resha Erheim writes of the spiritual and reflective aspects of the Holy Month. As Ramadan draws closer, several reminders can come to our minds. No, not slower or shorter days at work, or less traffic before sunset or even extended mall hours – although these are all great perks! What comes to mind for many, when Ramadan approaches, is heavily linked with what is also practised in therapy. Many Muslims see Ramadan as a time of spiritual and personal reflection, a time for healing and forgiveness, for compassion and giving, a time for acceptance. In addition, Ramadan encourages us to be more self-aware, as it is also a time for mindfulness in daily life; mindful talking, mindful action, mindful eating and mindful attention. When we are more aware of our thoughts, our feelings and our behaviour, we are less emotionally reactive to others and situations, we are calmer and act with more purpose and intent rather than on autopilot or mindlessly. Giving one specific explanation of mindfulness is challenging, as it is often based on a person’s subjective experience. However, Jon Kabat-Zinn defines mindfulness as “paying attention in a particular way; on purpose, in the present moment, and non56 May 2019

judgmentally.” So, mindfulness is paying close attention to the present moment with intent, free from the anxiety and stresses of the future and released from the sadness and regrets of the past. Since many mental and emotional problems and stresses come from overthinking about past experiences or future worries, mindfulness could prove to be a valuable practice for everyone! Mindfulness also encourages us to practice non-judgement. This similarly is preached in Islam in relations with others. Certain verses in the Quran refer to negative judgements, assumptions or backbiting – talking negatively about others – as a sin. Several other verses in the Quran and the Hadith dictate a similar mindset of non-judgement towards others. Mindfulness particularly focuses on awareness and non-judgement of one’s own thoughts and feelings and of others’ subjective experience. Mindful breathing is also an integral part of mindfulness practice and meditation. Muslim prayer, performed five times a day, is similar to mindfulness meditation, by bringing awareness to the present moment with intent and focus. In fact, you can do everything mindfully by bringing your awareness to daily routine activities, like household chores, getting dressed, eating, driving or whatever else you do during the day. Being in the present moment not only helps you focus better but also helps

you avoid unnecessary stress and worry while noticing more details around you. Next time you are stressed or are over thinking, try the following: • Become aware, let go of those negative thoughts without judgement • Mindfully breathe; bring your attention to deliberate breaths by meditation or yoga • Focus on the present; this will help you recognise and experience more pleasant moments of joy and happiness • Practise gratitude by noting or writing down three things you were grateful for that day • Take 10 minutes daily to do nothing, just be present – in the here and now • Observe what is going on around you, with curiosity (for example, people watching). So, this Ramadan, when you are gathered around the Iftar table, when you are eating, visiting family and friends or performing your daily prayers or rituals, try to be more mindful and reap the many benefits. Wishing you a mindful Ramadan! Resha Erheim is a mental health counsellor. She is a Canadian Certified Counsellor and a member of the Canadian Counsellor and Psychotherapy Association. Having worked in Canada, Kuwait and Dubai, she brings with her extensive multicultural experience in clinical and educational settings. www.bahrainthismonth.com

Ramadan Wellness Danah Quintana

Royal Bahrain Hospital’s nutritionist, Danah Quintana, outlines practical ways to nurture the body and soul during the Holy Month. The food choices that we make during Ramadan, the month of mercy and forgiveness, have a direct impact on our physical and spiritual wellbeing. Overeating has long been frowned upon in Islam as it is thought to increase materialistic appetite and cause sluggishness, thereby ‘dulling’ the soul, hampering spiritual growth and increasing bodily ailments. So, while we discuss the various benefits of fasting, we should also consider giving attention to nutrition during this month. A diet that is well-balanced will keep a person healthy and active during Ramadan. It should be simple and not differ too much from one’s everyday diet. It should comprise all the major food groups, such as fruits and vegetables, whole grains, lean meat, fish and other protein alternatives, milk and milk products, healthy oils and fats, and water. What happens to the body during fasting? Our body uses its carbohydrate stores in the liver and muscles, as well as fats, to provide energy once all the calories from the foods eaten the night before have been consumed during fasting. The kidneys, during fasting, conserve as much water as possible by reducing the amount lost in urine. But then, some water is lost when you go to the toilet; through your skin; and when you breathe and perspire, especially when it’s warm. Sometimes mild dehydration can be experienced, which manifests as headaches, tiredness and difficulty concentrating. However, studies have suggested that this is not harmful to health, 58 May 2019

provided that enough fluids are consumed after breaking the fast to replace those lost during the day. However, if you are unable to stand up due to dizziness, or you are disoriented, you should immediately drink regular, moderate quantities of water (ideally with added sugar and salt), a sugary drink or a rehydration solution. If someone has fainted due to dehydration, their legs should be raised above the level of the head and, on regaining consciousness, they should be made to urgently rehydrate as outlined above. For regular consumers of caffeinated drinks such as tea and coffee, the lack of caffeine during the fast may initially cause headaches and tiredness. However, this will ease over the course of Ramadan as the body adjusts to going without caffeine during the day. Having not eaten for a long period, you may find it helpful to eat slowly when breaking the fast and to start with plenty of liquids and low-fat, fluid-rich foods. What’s the best thing to eat to sustain long hours of fasting? Unprocessed, complex carbohydrates and fibre-rich foods including whole grains, barley, oats, wheat berries, brown rice, beans/lentils, nuts/seeds and almost all fruits and vegetables are foods that will help release energy slowly during the long hours of fasting. What to avoid in Ramadan? Items such as cakes, biscuits, chocolates and sweets are heavily processed and quickly digested foods which are not in their original form. They are mostly made of refined carbohydrates mixed with loads of hidden sugar, fat and sodium. It may also be worth

reducing your caffeine intake from tea, coffee and sodas; for caffeine is a diuretic and stimulates faster water loss through urination. Suhoor, the pre-dawn meal, should be as wholesome, moderate and filling as possible to provide enough energy for many hours. It is therefore particularly important to include slowly-digesting foods at this meal. Iftar, the meal which breaks the day’s fast, traditionally includes dates, to provide a refreshing burst of much-needed energy. Fruit juices will have a similar, revitalising effect. The meal should remain a meal and not become a feast! It’s important to focus on eating healthy and nutritious food for this meal. What and how much we eat directly affects our health, especially during the Holy Month, and refraining from unhealthy food can help improve self-discipline and restraint if done appropriately. Ramadan is an opportunity to make healthy lifestyle choices and give up some of our bad habits. Being mindful of how you fast and how you break your fast can help to improve your overall health – both physically and mentally. RULES TO REMEMBER: 1. Break your fast with dates and water and eat after prayer. 2. Add soup and vegetable salads in your meal plan. 3. Stay away from fried (oily) and fatty food and substitute frying with baking or grilling. 4. Avoid eating sweets every day during Ramadan and restrict them to special occasions (such as dining out or inviting guests to an Iftar meal). 5. Drink eight to 12 glasses of water during nonfasting hours. www.bahrainthismonth.com

Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice Verdict: A tough-as-nails but brilliant adventure. Rating:

What is it?

Directed by Hidetaka Miyazaki and developed by FromSoftware, Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice is a third-person, action-adventure with RPG elements that puts gamers in the role of a hard-hearted warrior whose mission is to rescue his master, a young lord, and exact revenge on his arch nemesis.

Gameplay

Rather than attacking to whittle an enemy’s health points, combat in Sekiro revolves around using a katana to attack their posture and balance instead, which eventually leads to an opening that allows for a single killing blow. The game also features stealth elements, allowing players to immediately eliminate enemies if they can get in range undetected. In addition, the player character has the ability to use various tools to assist with combat and exploration, such as a grappling hook. If the player character dies, they have the option of being revived on the spot, under certain conditions, instead of respawning at earlier checkpoints.

Graphics

Sekiro starts out like a work of historical fiction in a bloody but atmospheric period of Japanese history and quickly takes a hard turn

Dangerous Driving

From the creative talent behind the genredefining Burnout series, Dangerous Driving puts aggression back into the racing genre, recapturing the spirit of the past and taking it to a new place. The game allows you to floor it in everyday cars, at high speeds, weaving in and out of traffic and slamming the other cars right off the road. It’s about speed, driving skill and beautiful power slides around epic corners. Players race against remorseless AI drivers in eight different event types unlocking new deadly cars and aggressive abilities as they progress. 62 May 2019

into the mystical and supernatural. These incredible environments, ripped straight from myth and legend, regularly overshadow the actual story in a welcome, compensatory way. Moments of traipsing through divine gardens, reliving memories from the past and tangling with fantastical beasts all deliver a unified vision of a world that straddles this plane and the next. The vibrant, colourful sights and moody, atmospheric sounds create a varied world, set to a periodappropriate soundtrack that’s equal parts calming and haunting.

Falcon Age is a first-person, single-player action adventure. As Ara learns to hunt, gather and fight to reclaim her cultural legacy in the lost art of falcon hunting against a force of automated colonisers. Explore a strange land while bonding with your falcon and helping the resistance.

technologyapps

Apps Review BTM brings you the low-down on the latest and greatest apps on the market.

App: The Elements: A Visual Exploration Rating: Verdict: A fascinating and insightful look at chemistry. What is it?

The Elements is an electronic version of the popular hardcover book that lets kids explore the periodic table of elements by interacting with 500 high-resolution animated images that can be rotated and viewed in true 3D.

The Good

Informative text summaries dole out factoids, like that arsenic is used as both a paint pigment and rat poison and that boron is the key ingredient in putty, in a compelling way that makes it interesting to browse for both adults and children. It also has an opening animation and catchy theme tune that you’ll be humming for days, whether you want to or not.

The Bad

The main negative is that to unlock all the content, you need to be

connected to the internet. If you’re on a tablet, this means you need to have a Wi-Fi connection or you’re only getting some of the experience. The app is also large and pricey, so parents might want to make sure there’s more than just a passing interest in the subject matter before committing to the download.

App: Pact Health and fitness apps guide you to better behaviour and typically cheer you on, but Pact actually rewards you with cold hard cash. This mobile app, which requires a credit card and PayPal account to use, lets you form a pact for your health, either to work out a prescribed number of times per week or to eat right. If you fail, you get charged a minimum sum. Succeed, and you get a cut of the pot. The app is very clear in its rules, including instructions for getting out of your pact temporarily or permanently. If money moves you, Pact is an excellent fitness app.

App: Xnspy When you think of parental control apps, you probably picture keeping youngsters away from nasty websites and controlling how much time they spend online. Most of these apps also generate activity reports for parents, and many offer real-time notification of any abuses. Xnspy doesn’t try to control what your child does; instead it sticks to monitoring the child’s activity undetectably. If spying on your kids suits you, and you don’t need real-time reporting, Xnspy could be what you need.

VERDICT:

Fun and creative website for music enthusiasts.

Concert

An Arabic concert including artists such as Lebanese superstar, Ziad Bourji, was held at Sofitel Bahrain Zallaq Thalassa Sea & Spa

Site: www.incredibox.com Rating: To view more images, scan the QR code

What is it?

Incredibox is a website where people of all ages can create their own music. This fun and educational site, created by a French design company and musical group, allows users to build their own songs including effects, beats, melodies, chorus and voices.

The Good

The best part of the site is how easy it is to create different sounds. Each of the colour-coded musical options can be dragged onto the main screen and then a character appears and will begin to sing in the selected option. The characters take on the personality of their beat, including hats, glasses and different shirts. Once your composition is ready to go, it can be shared with your friends on social media or through email.

The Bad

A more in-depth tutorial would have been appreciated, as it takes a little while to find out exactly what you’re doing. It’s easy to make sounds, but more difficult to put them into a coherent, flowing rhythm that resembles a properly constructed song.

Sara Bareilles – Amidst the Chaos What’s the story?

Amidst the Chaos is the sixth studio album by American singersongwriter Sara Bareilles. In an interview before its release, Bareilles stated that the 2016 American Presidential Election was the catalyst for her beginning to write the album, with the title being a reference to the presidency of Donald Trump. The songs No Such Thing and If I Can’t Have You were written as odes to President Barack Obama, while Armor was written in response to the #MeToo Movement and released early in light of the confirmation hearing of Supreme Court Justice Brett Kavanaugh. The duet with John Legend, A Safe Place To Land, was written about the immigrant family separation crisis along the US-Mexico border in 2018.

Worth a listen?

There are hints of theatricality on Amidst the Chaos, particularly when the tempo quickens. The new predilection for foggy, atmospheric audio stands in stark contrast to the crisp, bright productions of Bareilles’ earlier records, a shift that’s more startling than the singer/songwriter’s decision to tackle socio-political topics, yet his deliberately arty setting emphasises Bareilles’ versatility. Much of the album is moody and contemplative, yet this also makes the handful of pop tunes seem all the more vivid. Its surfaces are

elusive and inviting, and its core is deep and nuanced, a combination that results in a rich, rewarding experience that shifts slightly with each return visit.

Verdict: Rich, rewarding and refreshingly different.

Shorts

Weyes Blood – Titanic Rising Here, Weyes Blood underscores enormously orchestrated pop songs with eerie experimental ambience, imagining a dream world. While all of Weyes Blood’s albums leading up to Titanic Rising were good, even great, there’s something that sets this one apart. Fantastic songs, meticulously detailed production and a certain, hard-to-name spark of connection all gel into the nearperfect statement that every part of the band’s strange journey before this led up to.

www.bahrainthismonth.com

Reba McEntire – Stronger Than The Truth Tempos rarely quicken on Stronger Than The Truth – apart from the two Western swing numbers, there’s the gilded confidence of Storm in a Shot Glass, but not much more than that – but the album doesn’t feel soft or meandering. Thanks to the co-production of Buddy Cannon – a Nashville stalwart who regularly recorded with Willie Nelson and Kenny Chesney in the 2010s – the album feels flinty even when it’s tender, a combination that’s long been a signature of McEntire’s. She channels this empathetic toughness into a series of songs that plays like short stories. There are tales of dashed dreams, managed expectations and earned love, along with many other manners of adult concerns.

The Drums – Brutalism On Brutalism, Jonny Pierce continues the self-reflection and self-healing he began on his last album, which, thanks to the ways his music grew to accommodate more complicated emotional states, was a breakthrough album for the Drums in more ways than one. As part of the healing process, Pierce collaborated with outside musicians on Brutalism and with a bigger creative team supporting him, he takes inspiration from his long-time affection for synth pop and electronic music, letting the shiny production and instrumentation act as candy-coated armour for his musings on love and lust.

You vs Wild

Following the success of its interactive programming, Netflix delivers a new interactive series that lets you choose how famed wilderness survival expert Bear Grylls experiences some of the most challenging environments on Earth. The audience will make decisions about Grylls’ actions and (hopefully) ensure he makes it out of wherever he’s been sent alive.

A Quiet Place

Before Bird Box, in which Sandra Bullock couldn’t look at the monsters, there was A Quiet Place, the first, and probably best, movie of this trend to be released. Directed by John Krasinski and starring him and his wife, Emily Blunt, the movie is gripping from the start, full of twists, turns and nails in the stairwell. By the end of it, you’ll realise you’ve barely exhaled at all.

The OA

Certain series are heralded as the ‘next big thing’ within their respective genres. The OA strikes out on its own – this mind-boggling adventure pilfers from every single genre to construct a wacky tale that’s part romance, part mystery, with dashes of fantasy, supernatural and more. Brit Marling writes, produces and stars as Prairie Johnson, a woman who returns to her family following a seven-year disappearance that’s she not keen to open up about.

Bosch

Harry Bosch is an irreverent homicide detective in Los Angeles. Like any good protagonist he has problems with authority, follows his gut and bends a few rules while achieving the best solved-case rate in all of California. Whatever situations the writers put him into, he will undoubtedly be entertaining as he pursues justice.

Love, Death and Robots

What if you took the dystopic futurism of Black Mirror, but made it slightly less depressing and animated it? You’d get David Fincher’s Love, Death & Robots, a new Netflix original anthology series that’s comprised of 18 episodes that run about 15 minutes apiece. Sure, there’s some brutality, it’s not toothless, but it won’t leave you looking for a therapist in the same way that Black Mirror did. Also, its animation style manages to pull off detailed CGI, without descending into the uncanny valley.

Tin Star

Set in the majestic Canadian Rockies, Tin Star tells the story of Jim Worth (Tim Roth), a former British detective now small-town police chief, who brings his family to the tiny, tranquil town of Little Big Bear for a better life. When a vast new oil refinery opens nearby and their new home is flooded with workers, Jim has to work hard to protect his family and the town from organised crime.

Haji Gahwa – The Stalwart This eatery in one of Manama souq’s alleyways has to top the list. Born in 1950, it literally squats between two buildings, with white canvas awnings sloping across parallel walls. Beneath this makeshift shade are fuss-free tables and benches, from where guests can see the hustle of the kitchen, with its glowing brick furnace doling out piping hot khaboos, almost the size of a dinner plate. Very often, flies mill around the place with amazing alacrity, but the aromas and flavours that the waiters’ worn aluminum salvers carry will compel you to throw caution to the wind. There’s no tactile menu, so choose from the verbal repertoire and peruse the walls replete with monochromatic photos of the Bahrain of yore while you wait for simple Bahraini fare that’s big on flavour. (Psst… inside rumour has it that the Michelin-starred chef Wolfgang Puck sat down at Haji’s to sample authentic Bahraini food.) Call 17 210-647. Emmawash – The Acclaimed One This name is fairly new on the traditional café scene, but its branches in Budaiya (the flagship), Hamala and Isa Town have garnered rave reviews on various travel sites. It is a popular haunt for locals and expats alike, who plop down on the floor or quintessential wooden benches upholstered with bright, stripped vermillion fabric (another Bahraini trademark). Besides mouth-watering Middle Eastern staples, including a cracker of a chai karak, it provides guests with a unique fun factor – the walls are entirely relinquished to its diners to doodle away on and leave their mark at the venue. It’s a great way for kids, young and old, to pass the brief time between placing their orders and gorging on home-style Bahraini dishes. Follow @emmawash_bh on Instagram Laialy Zaman Restaurant & Café Waterfront Vibes If it’s a leisurely cuppa or meal by the sea that you desire, this is your place. Located right by the www.bahrainthismonth.com

While Bahrain’s café culture boasts a plethora of international and home-grown coffee house chains, Behnaz Sanjana shines the light on those with old-world charm to go with the customary cuppa.

picturesque Al Fateh Corniche, this spacious spot has one of the best water views in town. Take in Manama’s stylish skyline in the distance through glass facades from indoors, or watch the bobbing boats at the nearby jetty as you dine al fresco. With Arabic fare spanning juicy grills, succulent seafood and basic but brilliantly concocted beverages, this one is a must-visit by day, dusk or at nightfall. Call 17 293-097. Chai Café – The Dark Horse Although humble in appearance, if you’ve grown up in Bahrain, this café will take you down memory lane with Chips Oman incorporated in dishes and down-to-earth Khaleeji favourites like balaleet, shakshouka, keema khubiz, chicken liver and foul as well as the uber essential roti with a variety of fillings including cheese and eggs. The décor is time-honoured as well, with circular handwoven mats and old-fashioned lanterns adorning the ceiling, as well as a tandoor for added character, while the outdoor pergolas beckon in days of clement weather. Shunners of milky tea are said to have fallen in love with the saffron karak here, so don’t forget to give it a try. This Sanabis venue boasts easy accessibility and parking. Call 17 001-727. Al Bindaira – The Upscale Hangout When the occasion calls for something slightly more than rudimentary, but encompassing a broad range of classic and contemporary Arabic gastronomy, Al Bindaira ticks all the boxes. This classy amalgamation of a shisha house, coffee shop and restaurant serves fare that’s consistently high in quality in a stylish ambience. The restaurant has made its presence felt in Adliya, Riffa, City Centre Bahrain and Al A’ali Shopping Complex in Seef. The sprawling Adliya outlet seems to be a firm favourite, offering guests the luxury of a variety of comfortable seating – under rustic stone arches, lofty wood- panelled ceilings, skylights, or in the courtyard under the blue. St Bar th’s Baby Join the jet-set on a trip to the ultimate Caribbean gem. French speaking Saint Barthélemy, more commonly known as St Barth’s or St Bart’s, is famous for its white-sand beaches and designer shops. The kind of place you might well have read of in the gossip columns and a favourite with the seriously rich but not, necessarily, famous. The capital, Gustavia, encircles a harbour filled with the kind of yachts that give a clue as to who your fellow visitors might be. The town has a selection of high-end restaurants with Asian-fusion eatery Orega regularly garnering five-star reviews. At Public, Maya’s is an institution and very popular with lovers of seafood. Out of town, at Grand Saline, Le Tamarin offers exquisite French, Caribbean and international cuisine. But don’t confine yourself to just the restaurants; like all Caribbean islands, St Barth’s boasts its fair share of street food vendors and fish shacks – though possibly slighter posher than you might expect. Close to the harbour in Gustavia you’ll find historical attractions like the Wall House, whose exhibits highlight the island’s Swedish colonial era. Perched above town is 17th-century Fort Karl, looking out over popular Shell Beach. Gustavia is also the main shopping venue, and we’re talking serious shopping. Here you’ll find big name jewellery and designer stores as well as one-off ateliers – make sure to pack your credit card. A popular way of seeing the island is from the water, either on a rented craft (if you don’t own a yacht) or via a day trip. A marine reserve since 1996, St Barth’s offers more than 22 dive sights with shipwrecks, caves and reefs to be explored. The surrounding seas are abundant in wildlife, so, as well as people watching, it’s great for fish spotting too. And, sticking with things maritime, there are also some excellent surfing spots. St Jean and Toiny are both great surfing beaches and at Lorient you’ll get waves and the chance to visit the island’s surf hut. If you’re wondering when to plan your visit, December to March is the dry season, and also the busiest, though the island’s warm, tropical climate ensures beaches are visited year-round. There’s jazz and chamber music in Gustavia and Lorient during the St Barth’s Music Festival in January. Carnival, around February/March is a time for street parades and The Bucket Regatta, in March, is a well-known sailing event. Hurricane season is July to November, which is also, not surprisingly, the wettest time.
