It’s easy telling summer is well on the way out with a packed October on the horizon. Bahrain International Music Festival is back with lots of worldwide and local acts to see. Details were just being released as we went to press but you can find all the info on our website at www.bahrainthismonth.com October sees the return of TribFest which brings a host of tribute acts to play an all-day event at Bahrain Rugby Club and we’re looking forward to Bahrain Jazz Festival and the island debut of Wizkid, who is rumoured to have been nominated for a Grammy Award by Beyoncé no less! Our big October feature is Germany in Bahrain, to tie in with Germany Unity Day. HE Kai Boeckmann brings us up to date on what has been going on throughout the year and the feature also includes news from the Kingdom’s German community as well as travel and a look at the German fashion designers to watch at the upcoming Berlin Fashion Week. Further interviews this month are the new British Ambassador, HE Roderick Drummond, who says his challenge is to find additional areas for cooperation. Famously known as the Kingdom of Dolls, Japan’s timehonoured cultural craft comes to Bahrain in an exhibition of the finest dolls of traditional performing arts as well as regional and creative pieces. Japan enjoys a rich culture of dolls and each figurine has its own distinct meaning and purpose, which is deeply connected to daily life. This traditional appreciation for dolls has resulted in the belief that they are not only children’s toys but also works of art to be displayed and admired which has led to the creation of unlimited styles. It also featured Balogun’s

Not only did the single cement his status as one of Nigeria’s biggest pop acts, it was also picked up and remixed by Drake and Skepta, thrusting Wizkid into the international spotlight. In March 2017, it was announced that Wizkid had signed a major deal with RCA and Sony International, which would release his third LP, Sounds From the Other Side, later that year. COMMERCE What businesses are members of the German community predominantly engaged in in Bahrain? The German business community in Bahrain consists of well-established companies leading in the fields of logistics, manufacturing, services and consultancy. Many of them have been here for a long time. Are there any notable new entrants to the market? Earlier this year, Armacell, a global leader in flexible foam for the equipment insulation market and a leading provider of engineered foams, launched a new manufacturing facility in the Bahrain International Investment Park. Also, DFS Aviation Services has set up a subsidiary in Bahrain. Earlier this year you said Bahrain was potentially overlooked by German businesses as an investment proposition and outlined plans to visit German chambers of commerce on your next home visit to promote the island – how did this go? The Chambers of Commerce in Düsseldorf, Hamburg and Frankfurt, three major centres of commerce and industry, organised meetings for 36 October 2019
me with the local business community. In all three places, I found a lot of interest to learn more about Bahrain. In Düsseldorf, some in the audience remembered a similar visit by one of my esteemed predecessors, Ambassador HE Dr Hubert Lang, some years ago. The presence of some company representatives with practical experience and of Gulf Air and the Economic Development Board (EDB) in one of the meetings, was also very helpful. It has previously been reported that Germany has offered to help Bahrain in its push towards solar power, are there any developments to report in this area? Thanks to the profound shift in Germany from conventional energy to renewables, there is a lot of expertise being developed. The storage of intermittent renewable power is a challenge German companies are taking up very actively. A lively storage industry is eager to offer its expertise to other countries. Are there any significant German-Bahraini business developments that you can share? I think thanks to the openness of the EDB, we have succeeded in intensifying the dialogue between the German business community and EDB as representative of Team Bahrain. This is
good because both sides can profit from this exchange. The long-standing experience of some of the German companies is the best argument to convince others to engage here. Have there been any significant trade visits over the past year? We have had a fair share of business delegations in the past year, for example there was a group of entrepreneurs in the area of leather, textiles and shoes and another of German food producers. Also, Dr Peter Ramsauer, the former German Minister of Transport, Building and Urban Development, led a delegation of entrepreneurs in various fields, particularly transport, health and infrastructure. I am confident we will have more trade delegations in the near future.
SECURITY How is the island’s German community reacting to the increased tensions in the region, is the Embassy experiencing any fearful reactions? And could this be having an effect on willingness to invest in the island? The German community is very well connected. Many members of the German community have been living here for a long time. I think this contributes to people being generally very www.bahrainthismonth.com
germanyinbahrain calm. Needless to say, for investors, stability is a very important factor when choosing their destination. Do you know how many Germans are living in Bahrain but travelling across to Saudi for work? Has there been any updated security advice for them in light of the recent attacks on the Saudi oil facilities? We know that a substantial number of Germans are living in Bahrain and travelling to Saudi Arabia for work. We advise all German citizens to download the app “Sicher Reisen” which provides information whenever the security advice changes. The UK has called on France and Germany to help patrol Gulf waters, a role which both countries have previously declined. Do you think the current escalation in tensions, particularly in light of tanker seizures, will change this and are negotiations underway? The situation is evolving and will evolve further until this interview is printed. Germany is supporting efforts to de-escalate the situation because no one stands to gain from a conflict. As we speak, Germany has just strongly condemned the attack of September 14 on two oil facilities in Khurais and Abqaiq. There is no justification for such an attack which heightens tensions and is the very opposite of the de-escalation which we so urgently need in the region. Are there any high-level government visits
(either way) coming up in the next few months? The upcoming Manama Dialogue 2019 will, of course, be attended by German Government representatives – our Defence Minister Ursula von der Leyen was here last year and met with His Royal Highness the Crown Prince. And HE the Speaker of the Council of Representatives, Fawzia Zainal, has been invited by the President of the German Parliament, the Bundestag, to visit Germany.
CULTURE You’ve previously spoken of music as a language that transcends borders – are there any cultural exchanges or events coming up in the near future? Please save the date of October 23 when the Berlin rock pop band Treptow will participate in the Bahrain International Music Festival organised by BACA and perform in the Cultural Hall. And for November we are planning an event to introduce the Beethoven year 2020, marking the 250th birthday of the great German composer.
I like to walk and meet people – especially outdoors. Places like Bahrain Fort, Dohat Al Arad, Muharraq, Manama Souq, the Famers’ Market in winter, Zallaq beach or restaurants and shops on Budaya Highway are wonderful to explore. Bahrain is a very safe place where I always meet smiling faces. What aspects of Bahrain would you particularly recommend to German visitors? An absolute highlight are the 15 houses of Shaikh Ebrahim Centre. The magic atmosphere in these places filled with art and conserving the memory of the people who lived and worked in them – be it as intellectuals or craftswomen – is something I have not encountered anywhere else.

THE ONES TO WATCH
Berlin Fashion Week is less than three months away, coming up from January 13-17 next year. We take a look at three of the young German designers who are setting the runways on fire.
ODÉLY TEBOUL
is the French designer who founded Berlin-based label Lou De Bètoly just two years ago and this year the brand debuted at the city’s autumn,winter Fashion Week. Having been taught to crochet by her mother at the age of five, it’s no surprise that Teboul’s designs draw heavily on needle art with crochet and needlepoint featuring on everything from jeans and mini skirts to boots and bags. After and interesting two years spent working with Jean Paul Gaultier, her pieces have a definite couture edge with fantastical combinations of coloured yarns, beads, crystals and figures. She sources her materials at an eclectic mix of venues from antique lace found in a Parisian flea market to tassels from Rajasthan and, far from fast-fashion, her creations are handcrafted and always different.
WILLIAM FAN is certainly a name to be reckoned with. Much excitement was generated by his autumn/ winter 2019 show which saw models stepping out in a karaoke bar! A child of both German and Chinese cultures, the designer created his first wardrobe pieces as a teenager and, after studying for a Bachelor of Arts in Fashion Design, went to work with the late Alexander (Lee) McQueen of whom he has said: “I learned to be a perfectionist and to tell stories with my collections.” He launched his own line at Berlin Fashion Week in 2015 and his pieces are designed to be unisex and characterised by a fusion of European and Asian influences. He travels regularly to Hong Kong and China to source a huge range of materials from the traditional markets and says he is proud to play on his Chinese roots.
BUKI AKOMOLAFE is a German-
Nigerian talent who founded her eponymous signature label in 2015. Drawing on her African heritage, the brand uses a range of traditional crafting techniques to produce a range of contemporary high-end women’s clothing stamped with hints of androgyny and precise tailoring. Fusing West African techniques with European craftsmanship, the materials used include certified cotton, organic hemp silk and individual African wax prints. Quilting is also a strong theme with pieces added to many of her sharp shirt designs and, adding to the authenticity of her pieces, the quilting is does freehand!

SPEAK THE LINGO The Language Course Programme of the German Embassy in Bahrain offers the chance to learn business and conversational German across all levels.

he courses, which have been operating for 10 years, are run as a non-profit organisation under the umbrella of the embassy and maximum class size is just 12 participants, allowing for a personal experience.

COURSES Seven teachers, who are well-qualified and mostly mother-tongue German speakers, conduct a series of 14 courses. These follow the Common European Framework of Reference (CEFR) and run from level A1 to C1. Each level is completed by doing three courses of three months each organised in terms, starting September, January, and April. A spokesman says: “The number of

WHY LEARN GERMAN? Many participants are school students who aim to study at a German University. And there are very good reasons for studying in Germany. It is a safe country with good living conditions, universities are high quality and they charge no or minimal fees. However, most of them teach in German only, and it is quite a long journey to study the language up to university level. The spokesman continues: “That’s why we recommend school students to start with us at an early age. For under 15s, we have a special discount, and this year we started a new programme of children’s courses from the age of nine. “Other reasons to study the language with us are for training (doctors want to do their specialisation there), or to find work there, or to be able to better communicate with German business partners or customers. “Many of our students, however, just come to our courses because it is an enjoyable experience, which opens access to a fascinating culture and, last but not least, makes travelling there even more fun.” STUDENTS Courses run with from five to 12 students and there are 110 students registered this term. Since its inception the programme has attracted more than 2,000 participants, some of whom sign up repeatedly for continuing studies. The vast majority of students are Bahraini but you can expect a colourful mixture of backgrounds and cultures in the classes. The current term started on September 15 and the next will commence on January 12 but registration is open at any time. Porsche presents its first fully-electric sports car, the Taycan, that links the brand’s heritage of more than 70 years to the future. The four-door sports saloon sets new standards in sustainability and digitalisation with its highly advanced production methods and features. The first models in the new series, the all-wheel drive Taycan Turbo S and Taycan Turbo, are at the cutting edge of Porsche E-Performance and are among the manufacturer’s most powerful models thus far. Efficient Performance The flagship Turbo S version of the Taycan can generate up to 761hp (560kW) overboost power, and accelerates from zero to 100km/h in 2.8 seconds. The Taycan Turbo goes up to 680hp (500kW) and takes 3.2 seconds to reach 100 km/h. The top speed of both these models is 260km/h. The battery can be quickly recharged using direct current (DC) from a high-power charging network for a range of up to 412 kilometres for the Taycan Turbo S, and 450 kilometres for the Taycan Turbo. The charging time for five to 80-per-cent SoC (state of charge) is 22.5 minutes under ideal conditions, and the maximum charging power (peak) is 270kW. The 42 October 2019
overall capacity of the Performance Battery Plus is 93.4kWh. Taycan drivers can comfortably charge their cars with up to 11kW of alternating current (AC) at home. A True Porsche Exterior The Taycan retains the unmistakable Porsche design DNA, with characteristic highly sculpted side sections. From the front it looks particularly wide and flat with highly contoured wings. The silhouette is shaped by the sporty roofline sloping downward to the rear. Innovative elements, such as the glasseffect Porsche logo, have been integrated into the models. Unique Interior Design The cockpit bears a clear structure and new architecture. The free-standing, curved instrument cluster forms the highest point on the dashboard. This places a clear focus on the driver axis. A central, 10.9-inch infotainment display and an optional passenger display are combined to form an integrated glass band in a black-panel look. The user interfaces have been newly designed for the Taycan. All control is intelligent and intuitive – using touch operation or the voice control function, which
responds to the command “Hey Porsche”. Porsche offers an entirely leather-free interior made from innovative recycled materials for the first time to underscore the sustainable concept of the electric sports car. Innovation At Its Best The Taycan Turbo S and Taycan Turbo have two exceptionally efficient electric machines, one on the front axle and one on the rear, thus making the cars all-wheel drive. Both the range and the continuous power of the drive benefit from the high efficiency of the permanently excited synchronous machines. A special feature of the electric motors is the ‘hairpin’ winding of the stator coils. This technology makes it possible to incorporate more copper in the stator, increasing power output and torque while maintaining the same component volume. The Porsche Taycan has been unveiled simultaneously in North America, China and Europe, in locations symbolising sustainable energy management forms. NEW INVESTMENT
SOUNDS OF BERLIN In their very first concert outside of Europe, German rock band Treptow are set to present their energetic songs in their native language and bring the sound of Berlin to the Kingdom in collaboration with the German Embassy. The band was founded in 2015 and specialises in pop, rock and alternative/independent music. They released their self-produced debut album in mid-September 2017, which landed directly into the iTunes charts. Their three single releases earned them remarkable success with radio stations such as RadioEINS, RBB Fritz, RBB radioBERLIN, NDR 2, 91.7 XFM, MDR Jump, SR 3, HR 3 and more. They have played over 150 concerts in Germany, Austria and Switzerland, and have accompanied artists such as Nena, Silly, Jesper Munk, Haudegen and many more. The band specialise in electric guitars, drums and German vocals in addition to incorporating dance into their performances, so, their October 23 performance at the Cultural Hall promises to be a night to remember and it’s free. 46 October 2019
Bahrain-based Investcorp has grown its European real estate assets to more than USD500 million with the purchase of the Airport Centre, a multi-let office and light industrial property found close to the international airport in Hamburg. A leading global provider and manager of alternative investment products, this is Investcorp’s fourth real estate investment in Germany in the last 12 months. The property currently houses 32 tenants across a diverse set of sectors and has demonstrated a strong occupational history since construction. The purchase of Airport Centre
closely follows the acquisitions of office buildings located in Stuttgart, Eschborn and Niederrad, bringing Investcorp’s total AUM in Germany to approximately USD355 million. Neil Hasson, Managing Director Head of Investcorp European Real Estate, said: “We are delighted to announce the purchase of Airport Centre in Hamburg. This acquisition is an important milestone as we continue to execute our strategic vision to expand our presence in Europe and grow our AUM. We believe that the German office market has good fundamentals and we expect that our portfolios will exhibit a good return profile for our investors.”
FLYING THE FLAG German logistics giant DHL has renewed its commitment to the Kingdom with the extension of its lease at Bahrain International Airport, which is its regional hub. Earlier this year the company also welcomed the first of 14 new Boeing 777 freighters which made its first commercial flight – from its home base at Cincinnati to Bahrain. At the time, John Pearson, CEO of DHL Express, told aircargonews.com: “This efficient, long-range and high-capacity freighter will enable us to serve even more markets with non-stop flights and significantly contributes to greater sustainability in line with our ‘zero emission by 2050’ sustainability strategy.” With a payload capability of 112 tons and a range of 9,200km, the B777F has the largest capacity and range of all twin-engine freight aeroplanes. Literally translating to ‘red fortress above the river Tauber’, this is Germany’s fairytale town that’s every Instagrammer’s dream. Note that there are other nondescript Rothenburgs in the country, but the one on the Tauber is where you will find mediaeval charm that seems otherworldly – brightly painted structures with flowering balconies grace every street. Walk the whole length of its fortified 12th-century town wall (with 42 towers and numerous gates) that ran around the periphery for protection. The town hall with its historical underground vaults complete with military equipment and 12 dungeons, the Medieval Crime Museum, the Castle Gardens, the year-round Christmas Museum and St Jacob’s Church all make a trip to this part of Germany worthwhile. Don’t miss out the Nightwatchman’s Tour, as he takes you around after sundown, showing you places of interest and explaining their significance in Rothenburg’s history.
The second-largest city in Germany has a great mix of tales from various periods of the past – perfect for the history buff. Whether you stay in Nuremberg for a day, or more, you’ll be immersed in stories of its various inhabitants – a bustling mediaeval centre, a star in the renaissance, and haunted by the grip of Nazi atrocities. When touring the city, one can’t miss the Kaiserburg, or the Nuremberg Castle. It was restored following heavy damage in World War II, and offers themed tours for adults and children. The outstanding St Lorenz church, with its notable paintings and sculptures, the Germanic National Museum, Nuremberg Toy Museum and the unique Hangman’s Bridge are the main attractions. Nuremberg was the centre for Germany’s first railway, so do also check out the German National Railways Museum. A still-standing wonder from the 14th century is the Schöner Brunnen, a wonderous 19-metre Gothic fountain in the main market square. Its four levels show 40 figurines depicting the Holy Roman Empire, Moses and the seven prophets sitting on the highest tier.
BAMBERG This UNESCO World Heritage Site rolls over seven hills along the banks of the River Regnitiz. Beautiful architecture, rich culture and scenic spots characterise this quaint little town. Take your time marvelling at the pretty frescoes on the outside of the Altes Rathaus, the town hall, which sits on its own river island. The skyline is punctuated with the unmissable green towers of Bamberg Cathedral, boasting Gothic and Roamnesque architecture. Take in the gorgeous lush green valleys from atop the highest hill, where the centuries-old Altenburg Castle is perched, and see the octagonal towers of Schloss Seehof, the 17th-century palace located just outside Bamberg city. Schlenkerla is the most famous brewery here, a must-visit for its cosy ambience and delicious Bavarian cuisine as much as its original ale. www.bahrainthismonth.com

Liz O’Reilly sat down with incoming British Ambassador, His Excellency Roderick Drummond, to learn about the new man at the helm. What is the current state of trade between the two countries? To the end of March, it was almost BD470 million in goods and services – 75-per-cent goods and 25-per-cent services. That’s growth of about nine per cent over the same period last year. There has been steady growth over the last five years. The single biggest thing was Bahraini exports to the UK in things like chemical products etc. The challenge that I have is to do better. I have to find new areas to explore!

DRAWING FOR LIFE Organiser, Dr Sarah Clarke, on introducing a new festival making its debut in Bahrain in collaboration with the RIA Centre.
W
hether you’re an aspiring artist or just curious about drawing, Bahrain’s first Big Draw Festival Event, taking place from October 24-26 promises an exciting three-day happening, where all abilities can explore their creative side. Established in 2000 in the UK, The Big Draw (www.thebigdraw.org) expects to attract over 500,000 participants worldwide in more than 25 countries at no fewer than 1,000 events this year. HELP FOR HEALTH “It’s a celebration of all forms of drawing to encourage people to grab a pencil, crayon, charcoal, chalk – anything really – and just draw! This year’s Festival theme is “Drawn to Life” and links creativity with wellbeing, a goal being to show how drawing and creativity can help our mental health; something which, in this increasingly fast-moving, technologically driven world, can easily get overlooked as we try to juggle more and more things” says Sarah, Founder of Baloo’s Buddies. “This October marks RIA’s 20th year,” says RIA Co-Founder Christine Gordon MBE. “And we’re delighted to be staging the first ever Big Draw event in Bahrain. To ensure that everyone can take part, we won’t just be drawing with pencils and paper in the conventional sense, we’ll be sticking, colouring, painting, sewing and more so that everyone can participate to the best of their abilities. And, we’ll be using up-cycled, recycled and repurposed things to minimise our impact on the environment.” MAKE A CONNECTION “For The Big Draw Bahrain – 2019,” says Sarah, “we’ve chosen the art of the labyrinth as our 52 October 2019
connection between drawing and mental wellbeing. Labyrinths have been widely used by many cultures to support mental health, promote inner peace and improve general wellbeing. Unlike mazes, a labyrinth is not a puzzle to be solved, it’s a spiral course with a single, winding, unobstructed path from the outside to the centre. Labyrinths come in all shapes and sizes, they can be permanent structures or lines made in the sand or ones you can trace with your finger, eyes or pencil. They can be made from all sorts of materials sand, pottery, wood, fabric, bottle tops.... just about anything really. “We’ll be making a giant, wheelchair accessible, walkway out of more than 1,000 pieces of broken pottery, as well as teaching participants how to draw a labyrinth on paper and creating tactile finger labyrinths so that visually impaired people can also experience the art of labyrinths. We hope to relocate the finished pathway to a garden so that Bahrain has a permanent space where people can relax and simply breathe. We’re delighted that The Avenues has given us the opportunity to use its space for our event.” GET INVOLVED Volunteer Amanda Clerkin adds: “As you can imagine, there’s a lot of prep work before an event of this nature. So, we would be delighted to hear from anyone who has a few hours to
spare, as well as school and community groups who want to take part. One of the best things about this kind of hands-on events is that we engage with people from all walks of life. For some, simply making a connection with people in a fun and relaxed atmosphere gives them a mental boost and may help to reduce loneliness for those living a long way from home.”

A SINGER WITH SUBSTANCE Behnaz Sanjana found herself fangirling over Banah Anabtawi while chatting to the rising star about her musical journey, being signed by Universal Music MENA and the launch of her new single.
I
n her latest offering, Shou Bina, Banah’s rich, soulful voice croons about long-term love that lasts to the very end, despite passion being lost somewhere along the way. The song was produced by Universal Music, making Banah the first Bahraini and the first female singer in the GCC to be approached by the label. “I collaborated with my favourite poet and musicians of a high calibre on this project, for which I feel so fortunate,” says the down-toearth singer. “The topic of the song is handled in a witty, refined way. The influence of Western music I’ve had has been showcased in this Arabic piece. It’s a funky Oriental tune with instruments like the saxophone merged in to the master.” Shou Bina, her fourth single, has received rave reviews and is popular on radio stations across the region. It reminds audiences of ‘90s music – authentic, without the feel of being digitally produced. Evolving as a Singer Growing up, Banah would find herself lost in the voices of Aretha Franklin, Frank Sinatra, Fairuz, Umm Kulthum, Abdel Wahab and the likes. “Of the newer sounds, I like Adele, Amy Winehouse, Carole Samaha and I’m into rock, jazz and blues,” she says. www.bahrainthismonth.com
The influence of diverse music genres makes up her original style. Her initial English cover versions, into some of which she creatively incorporated Arabic lyrics, were extremely well received. She says: “As a bilingual singer, it was initially hard defining myself as an artist. In my early days in music, doing cover songs with local musicians, merging English and Arabic lyrics and styles helped me set my path. But my focus is on being an original artist now.” Finding Her Calling She adds: “Coming from an Arab background, becoming a singer was frowned upon. I was once a banker, then a marketing professional. I even had my own successful advertising agency. But I felt incomplete, and bored.” When she finally gave in to her inner voice, she was already a mother of two girls. “I had just given birth to my younger daughter, but when the universe gives you signs, you take your chances!” The First Public Performance In 2017, Banah opened for the Tom Jones concert that was part of the Spring of Culture festival. “I love performing to an audience. My first performance ever was Don’t Know Why by Norah Jones,” she remembers.
I’m going on a media tour which will be followed by some concerts around the region.” Family Support She says: “My husband’s support is everything, and I am blessed for it. Today my family understands why I do what I do. Maintaining the balance between work and home is difficult; it’s a work in progress. I want my daughters to know that there is no limit in dreaming to make things happen. Music builds character and teaches you a lot. I do hope they are musically inclined!” Lessons Learnt “Consistency and a great team are important to get ahead. Also, remember your purpose to get through the tough times, and stay true to yourself.” Future Plans “I’m going on a media tour which will be followed by some concerts around the region. AMERICAN SCHOLARSHIPS AWARDED The American University of Bahrain (AUBH) has granted its first scholarships to two outstanding students. Atharie Al Salem and Sara Khaled were offered a 50-per-cent scholarship to pursue their higher education studies. Both candidates underwent a rigorous evaluation led by a panel comprising AUBH’s Provost and the Director of Student Affairs. They were selected based on their exemplary academic performance, personal
achievements, and motivation to succeed in an American-style environment. They were also seen as great ambassadors of the AUBH mission and vision. Sara will be pursuing a Bachelor of Science in Computer Engineering and Atharie a Bachelor of Science in Multimedia Design. FIRST HEALTH CONFERENCE The National Health Regulatory Authority, which provides healthcare in the Kingdom, is holding the First Bahrain Health Regulatory Conference 2019, over three days from November 28-30. It will be supported by various government health entities, the private sector and other professional, industry-related societies and will feature an exhibition showcasing stakeholders as well as keynote speakers, lecture presentations, panel discussions, networking and workshops on health regulation schemes in addition to providing business opportunities for investors in the healthcare industry. IT’S GOOD TO TALK Financial expert Pria Masson Tanwar says: “B2B is the core of an economy and must be strong.”
T
he bedrock of economic activity comprises the varied business models that drive development. This could be in the form of a farmer supplying produce to the consumer (business to consumer or B2C); or the farmer selling to a company that processes the produce (business to business or B2B). All other formats are usually varied modifications of these basic models, such as re-labelling or reassigning roles. Anyone who is providing the services is a business and anyone purchasing the service is a consumer. With time and globalisation, the world appears to have shrunk. Products are easily imported or traded and, since the various aspects that drive these core products (software, nuts and bolts, services solutions, financing systems and structures), are hidden from our vision, we presume that they take care of themselves. To compound the concern, there is a certain ease associated with B2C products that make them easier to provide. They are more relatable, tangible, trendy and newsworthy. In the context of our economy today, B2B activity is vital for economic stability. The many aspects of a business, such as the provision of equipment for offices, workplace solutions or even aggregative technology that meets the needs of a business; it all needs attention. What makes something a B2B product is not just who consumes and who provides, it’s also the ‘stickiness’ of that product and the longevity of use. B2B products have a higher probability of creating stability on account of some key variables. Greater Stickiness Companies are usually far more focused because when you are selling to a company, it has its policies, procedures and goals already laid out. You need to understand the same and make specific adjustments to your product to fit into their (the purchaser’s) 56 October 2019
requirements. Once that’s done, for a firm to change policies and procedures is far more difficult than for an individual to say: “I don’t like that anymore”. Predictable Cash Flows Payments for B2B products are usually more predictable and companies are more accountable for the same as compared to individuals. If, as a company, I purchase printer products from a given provider, I’m likely to make a certain purchase every quarter. If I purchase a piece of software, I am likely to keep using that software and renewing the same because familiarity for a group is not an easy habit to break. A company has more predictable habits and patterns – and does not change them easily. Survival and Longevity Contracts survive individuals. You sign with a company, not with a person. So, managers can come and go, but your contract with the
company, the stickiness they have to the same and interaction with the company may be independent of organisational changes. This works for both the supplying and consuming business. When economies try to move directly to targeting consumers as the primary focus, the core work can suffer. On the other hand, when businesses work to strengthen each other, it’s like working on the core of your body. Once that is strong, a lot of things become easier. In a business context, this means that the end consumers of whatever product is being provided to the final consumer (you and I) is stronger, which sets off its own chain of stability. It’s a spiral of strength that begins with a conversation between two businesses. This communication is essential to the learning curve of progress. Dick Potter asks: “To hire or not to hire, that is the question?”
A
nybody who can drive has almost certainly used one. Having used and returned it, at most, as we scurry away, we hope it’s not going to collapse into bits from our, ahem, use of it. I am, of course, talking about car hire and hire companies. Arrrrgh… I hear you shriek as you possibly recall various tales of woe from using them. A proliferation of car hire companies exists nowadays. Walking (I don’t drive everywhere I’ll have you know!) in Adliya recently, I counted no less than eight car hire offices. I’d never heard of half of them! Car hire companies make up an extremely competitive market. Barraging you with low rates, they further hope to capitalise by getting you to take insurance from them or some other such add on. Google “car hire fraud” and you can see how some, and I stress some, unscrupulous companies try to extract cash from the naive punter. Consider the additional stress of hiring a car on an expansive road trip and the trepidation of being expected to return the vehicle in the same condition as when you started out? Two weeks ago, in a Johannesburg rental company, after a long tiring flight, I received the ubiquitous rental agreement to sign. Cue: “Initial here, here and here, sign here.” The writing on the agreement was such that I would have required much time – with a magnifying glass – to peruse it fully. Instead, akin to 99 per cent of car renters, I signed – possibly agreeing to exchange my soul for the vehicle! Thankfully, that rental experience ended without mishap. This one didn’t. I rented a lovely Jaguar XJS for two weeks in the UK, (from a major car hire company, can’t mention name here, but you can ask me). I duly drove www.bahrainthismonth.com
it – it is a lovely car – returned it for inspection and sign-off and I skipped away, (not literally of course, at my age that would be unseemly). FOUR months later, an SMS on my phone informed me around BD1,000 had been appropriated by the said Jag rental company. Upon discharge from the cardiac arrest unit, I unearthed the reason for this audacious transaction. On its return from my hire, the Jag had gone in for a service. The resulting incredulous list of works needed and their associated costs had been invoiced to me. Considerable (terse) written exchanges ensued. They insisted I had signed an agreement to return the car in the same condition as I got it. Indeed. Within certain parameters, I believed. In conclusion, the rental company finally agreed to remove some of the charges. I had to resort to having my credit card company refuse and refund. You all know you can do this within 30 days of the contested debit right? That was six months ago and, thankfully, all remains quiet on the Jag front. Car hire may become a necessary part of our increasingly nomadic lifestyles, so, how to prevent your experience becoming a horror story? As rental companies proliferate, we get rate competition. Don’t just go for the cheapest option, if you rent cars regularly; get a completely independent insurance policy, for example, Questor. Read company previews; before driving away, take a video and/or photos of all sides of the car including the tyres. Oh, and if you have a spare two hours, and aren’t too tired after your flight, read the small print!

NFINITI is seeking the region’s brightest engineering talent for the 2019 edition of the INFINITI Engineering Academy. The closing date of applications is October 25. The programme, the only one of its kind in the world, aims to enhance the skills of youngsters looking to go into automotive and motorsport engineering. It provides a unique opportunity for students to gain experience in both the premium automotive and Formula 1 industries, with a six-month placement at the INFINITI Technical Centre Europe and a further six months at Renault F1 Team. Markus Leithe, Managing Director, INFINITI Middle East, says: “Students will be chosen from a set of tasks that will assess their current knowledge of the technicalities of the automotive sector, as well as their soft skills.” The academy will select one engineering student from the Middle East currently studying in a local or regional university to join the programme alongside six winners from other regions. fter a construction period of less than 48 months, Porsche has opened the new production facility for its first all-electric sports car at its Zuffenhausen site. “The zero-emissions Taycan is a new Porsche icon,” says Oliver Blume, Chairman of the Executive Board of Porsche AG. “We have a level of responsibility for the environment and society. Production of the Taycan is carbon-neutral. Heritage meets the future at our parent plant in Stuttgart-Zuffenhausen, which is the heart of the brand.” The facility sets new standards in terms of energy efficiency and environmental friendliness. Assembly takes place in a “factory of the future” – flexible, networked and using 4.0 production technology. It is a further step towards the “Zero Impact Factory” with no negative environmental impact. Production of the Porsche Taycan with zeroemission powertrain at the Zuffenhausen site will be carbon-neutral. In addition to using electricity from renewable sources and biogas to generate heat, the new production buildings are designed to be extremely energy-efficient. Further examples are the electrically powered logistics vehicles, the use of waste heat in the paint shop, the greening of roof areas and a continuous and holistic approach to other potential resource savings. AUTHENTIC RUSSIAN FLAVOURS Liz O’Reilly headed to Equal Romanov in Adliya for an eastern feast.
Some time ago, I set out to compile a round-the-globe list of dining options in Bahrain. Admittedly there were quite a few missing but one really notable omission was Russian cuisine. When I heard this gap had now been filled, I was eager to check out what’s on offer. Firstly, let me start with the venue. Everything from the chairs, some of which bear portraits of the former Russian royal family, to the plush wallpaper and prints of Tzar Nicholas Romanov and his clan, has been chosen by restaurant manager Yuliya. She’s Russian by the way, as are the chefs. The atmosphere is high-end yet at the same time relaxing, which just helped the excellent culinary offerings render me close to a food coma! CELEBRATION SALAD Yuliya had suggested a selection of dishes which she assured me were classically Russian fare and I was keen to dig into the starter of Salad Olive’ye with shrimp. A special occasion dish, usually prepared for high days and holidays, such as New Year, I could easily see why – it’s rich, very rich! A selection of chopped veggies and pickles brought together with homemade mayonnaise and a dash of mustard, it’s a treat for the taste buds and the firm but tender juicy shrimps were the perfect accompaniment. PERSONAL FAVOURITE Next up was Draniki S Mochankoi. Here, I must confess that my Irish heritage makes me a sucker for potatoes in their many and varied forms but potato pancakes are an absolute favourite. This dish sees them light, fluffy and deliciously crispy accompanying bite-sized chunks of tender meat (I had beef and bacon but there are other options) served in a rich, creamy white sauce flavoured with onions, mushrooms and spices. Don’t be concerned though, it’s not spicy, just full of authentically warming flavours. I had been limiting my portions in anticipation of trying four separate dishes but I must admit Draniki S Mochankoi challenged me to put my knife and fork down without polishing off the lot. www.bahrainthismonth.com
SOMETHING SWEET When I arrived, Yuliya was breakfasting on a delicious looking plate of pancakes, or blini, and, noting my covetous expression, she added these to my tasting menu, much to my delight. Now, if you’re American, these are not what you think of as pancakes. They’re much more European; a lighter, thinner batter made without soda. To my mind, they’re actually much better than the thicker American version, but that’s a matter of personal preference. However, add a generous serving of berries and sour cream and I would challenge anyone not to be impressed – even just the look of the plate is inviting, never mind the fabulous texture and mix of flavours. And to make them even better, they’re also available with savoury accompaniments such as salmon and red caviar or ham and cheese. Last but not least came Sirniki – curds with fruit and clotted cream. I’ve never had curd before, it’s made through a process of curdling milk, which, I have to say, sounds a bit off-putting. But I was pleasantly surprised. There’s a smooth but almost crumbly texture and the taste is akin to a sweet cheese. I’d definitely recommend you try it as it’s hard to describe and it’s also homemade as it’s not easy to import from Russia without compromising the freshness. All in all, Equal Romanov gets a definite thumbs up. I will be back.

Who doesn’t know Upstairs Downstairs? Behnaz Sanjana pops into one of the island’s favourite haunts for a pleasant weekday dinner.
T
he fact that Wednesday is ‘open mic night’ at Upstairs Downstairs added the fun factor to my night out with the significant other. It had been a while since we’d caught up, beyond the regular ‘how was your day’ conversation. And what better place than the tried and tested venue that, for over four decades, has been part of Bahrain’s dining scene? The restaurant may have recently celebrated its 43rd anniversary, but it has certainly retained its continental charm – cobblestoned flooring, white French windows downstairs and foliage amorously cascading from the wrought iron balustrades upstairs. The soft lighting adds to the cosy atmosphere. When I turned my attention to the food, I recalled that the Hamour Pâté had been particularly outstanding on a previous visit. I felt a wee bit dejected not finding it on the menu, until the manager explained that it is still available, it’s just not on the menu, to give this signature preparation an element of exclusivity. Faith in the evening restored, I went on to also order the Butternut Pumpkin and Ginger Soup, while my partner chose the Prawn and Avocado Salad to kick-off our meal. Living up to my memory, the smoky-herby flavour was evident in each bite of the pâté triangles strewn with pomegranate. The fish is smoked for 24 hours in the traditional way 64 October 2019
using only all-natural ingredients, in line with the restaurant’s stringent policy of serving patrons ‘real food’ – fresh, natural and wholesome. With its accompanying toast, I could have made this appetiser my entire meal, and I don’t even like fish that much! The soup had a mild after-kick of ginger to the sweetness of its pumpkin, along with a fitting crunch from the croutons floating atop. The salad was appealing at the very first glance with its unique presentation. A bright green avocado cake was crowned with coralhued prawns. The succulent crustaceans went well with the buttery texture of the vegetable, and their combined flavour was heightened by balsamic vinaigrette, chilli oil and a lemon segment on the side. We were quite full with the starters, so we waited a while and enjoyed the amateur singers showing off their notable talents onstage. When
it came to mains, the Grilled Salmon was a healthy choice with steamed veggies, parsley potatoes and a tangy dill and lemon butter sauce on the side. The Lamb Cutlets made me salivate just looking at them. The meat had a perfectly chargrilled exterior, crisscross grill marks and all. The inside was well done, as we’d requested, but still blush pink in colour and yielding in texture. The restaurant specifically uses New Zealand lamb for its pronounced flavour and tender grain. Garlic mashed potatoes, seasonal vegetables and a verdant mint sauce were appropriate sides to all that protein. The desserts page of the menu has options that I would have most happily tucked into, had it not been for a very full belly. But we left the restaurant with impetus to return in the near future, and with that, we called it a date night.

Final Fantasy VIII consists of three main modes of play: the world map, the field map and the battle screen. The world map is a 3D display in which the player may navigate freely across a small-scale rendering of the game world. The field map consists of controllable 3D characters overlaid on one or more 2D prerendered backgrounds, which represent environmental locations such as towns or forests. The remaster features high-definition graphics and improved character models, produced in collaboration with Dotemu and Access Games. WHAT IS IT?
An image-editing and photo-social-networking app that includes AI-enhanced art filters. These can transform mobile photos, giving them the appearance of professional artworks.
THE GOOD
PicsArt offers just about every image enhancement tool in the book, along with a photo-sharing network used by 80 million people. The app has a wealth of photo editing, enhancing and drawing tools, including highly adjustable filters and magic effects, plus the option to share instantly.
THE BAD
Having so many options not only can cause confusion and overwhelm amateur users, but it comes with a risk of over-modified, unnatural photos. Apps like Instagram do a good job of preventing this by limiting the options and the extent to which options can affect images, but here there’re layers upon layers of depth that can distort photos beyond recognition.
APP: SIGNAL Signal lets you easily make free, fully encrypted VoIP calls on your iPhone. The app is simple to set up and calling is done with a single tap. Calls are low latency and compatible with the companion app on Android. Unfortunately, some design and usability issues keep it from truly shining, such as connectivity issues and a refusal to accept insecure calls. 76 October 2019

The film follows an Indian soldier, Khalid, who’s assigned to eliminate his former mentor, Kabir, who has gone rogue. Expect plenty of spectacularly choreographed fight scenes and, of course, the obligatory big dance number – a beach party played out to the theme song, Ghungroo.
Genre: Crime, Drama, Thriller Release Date: October 4 Much awaited and garnering Oscar buzz even before its release, Joker delves into the origin of the infamous Batman villain. Joaquin Phoenix takes on the title role made famous by the late Heath Ledger. The film made a splash by winning the prestigious Golden Lion at the Venice Film Festival. Oh, and it’s Joaquin Phoenix under the make-up.

The disparate group move to the American heartland as they face off against evolved zombies and fellow survivors.
Genre: Sci-fi, Action Release Date: October 11 Henry Brogan is an aging but elite, government-employed assassin who becomes the target of a mysterious operative who can seemingly predict his every move. He quickly learns that his would-be nemesis is a younger, faster, cloned version of himself, who has been sent to kill off Brogan and take his place in a bizarre twist on retirement!

THE HIGHWOMEN – THE HIGHWOMEN This debut from solo stars turned supergroup Brandi Carlile, Maren Morris, Natalie Hemby and Amanda Shires is such a highconcept record that the actual songs don’t quite live up to it. The craftsmanship is obvious and they nail that laid-back old time country vibe, while the production is pleasant enough. But these artists have all released quite a few solo records that hit much harder than any of this. It’s OK, it’s perfectly adequate, but it’s never astounding and nowhere near the emotional gut punches they’ve been known to dish out in the past. IGGY POP – FREE
We Are Not Your Kind is the sixth studio album by American heavy metal band Slipknot and was recorded at EastWest Studios in Hollywood, California with co-producer Greg Fidelman. The title is taken from a lyric in the song All Out Life, which was released as a standalone single in 2018. We Are Not Your Kind is the first Slipknot album not to feature percussionist Chris Fehn, who was dismissed in March 2019 after suing the group for alleged unpaid royalties.
A half-century on from the first Stooges album, Iggy Pop has made it clear he’s not as in love with rock ‘n’ roll as he once was. Albums such as 2009’s Preliminaires and 2012’s Après have found him exploring less aggressive and more thoughtful material, and Iggy continues this trend with 2019’s Free. While there are electric guitars on most of these numbers, there’s little in the way of fuzz or bark, and a ghostly trumpet and waves of atmospheric keyboards play a much bigger role in the arrangements. For the most part, Free finds Iggy contemplating a culture caught in a tailspin and his deep, craggy voice and tone of weary rage fit the verses like a glove.

WHAT’S THE STORY?
Slipknot’s latest is an astonishing record: a roaring, horrifying delve into the guts of the band’s revulsion, a primal scream of endlessly inventive extreme metal and searing misanthropy. In particular, Unsainted is one of the greatest things Slipknot have ever done, with its school nativity choir sawn in half when Taylor roars: “I’m finally holding on to letting go”, before he insists: “I’m just weathering a rough patch”. Like the band’s 2004 masterwork Duality, the track combines a gothic-pop chorus with a kick-drum verse that sounds like a series of sharp implements bouncing from a stab-proof vest. It’s Slipknot at their artiest, an implicit riposte to detractors who would write them off as eternally adolescent shock-rockers that bang bins and shout at lot (although, thankfully, there’s also a massive amount of that on the album).

With almost 13 years and four months between releases, enigmatic alt-metal band Tool finally return their long-awaited fifth album, Fear Inoculum. Clocking in at 80 minutes with just seven official tracks, this is less a straightforward rock record and more a mind-bending journey, borrowing a classical approach that trades traditional constructs heard on early radio staples for something akin to movements within a symphony. Not surprisingly, after over a decade, the foursome have matured, presenting an older, wiser perspective born of a well-adjusted shift into the hard-won comforts of adulthood. www.bahrainthismonth.com

The Transparent Musicale Finale
The award-winning Prime Original series Transparent comes to an end in raucous fashion with a two-hour musical episode. After the death of Maura, the Pfeffermans must deal with their grief — and the horror of learning that Shelly (Judith Light) plans to stage a musical play based on the family.

As well as artsy offerings, there are plenty of up-to-date films (in October you can even catch the new Mama Mia) and the cinema is also a venue for live concerts and theatre performances.

Follow the path of the ancients to Akritiri. The Bronze Age settlement was one of the most important Minoan ports and centres in the Aegean Sea when it was covered by volcanic ash in the 17th century BC. This made its preservation exceptional and it is now one of the most important archaeological sites in Greece. Today it is covered by a bioclimatic roof and walkways are suspended above the remains.

The southernmost of the Cyclades has been attracting visitors for years. Formerly a favourite among the travelling hippy crowd, these days it is a popular family destination with plenty of upmarket options to keep the cosmopolitan voyager happy.
Though there’s never a bad time, October is said to be the best time to visit the Greek island of Santorini. The summer hoards have gone but the weather remains pleasant – a break from our still blistering temperatures, without going all-out winter cold. The island’s blue-domed, whitewashed buildings are as famous as they are picturesque, but there’s much more to this Aegean paradise.
Santorini has a wealth of fabulous beaches where you can chill out and laze the day away. But, if you’re feeling a bit more adventurous, head to Monolithos Beach and try your hand at kitesurfing. Be warned, the winds can be strong, so you might want to start working those pecs, abs and biceps if you decide to give this a go.
The restaurants and food stalls of Amoudi Bay are famous for their fresh seafood – eaten with a fantastic seaside view. Dimitris Ammoudi Taverna (pictured) comes highly recommended, as does Fanari, particularly for the sunset views. Look out for the super-fresh squid hanging outside.

Aside from the usual tourist souvenirs, Santorini is blessed with lots of one-ofa-kind galleries and unique shops selling locally made arts, crafts, designer pieces and traditional pottery. There are upwards of 40 jewellery stores in the main street of Fira – but, beware, handcrafted does not always mean hand-made! There are also plenty of places selling food and grape made in Santorini, which make ideal gifts. Or, for something a bit different, visit the Tomato Museum and head home with some seeds. BAHRAIN YACHT CLUB
THE BRITISH CLUB – BAHRAIN This club, that is thought to have been started in 1935, apparently used to be known as The Gymkhana Club. Located in Adliya, it is one of the oldest and most popular expat clubs in Bahrain. Since its early years, it has built on its strengths, boasting over 2,000 members. The club’s coffee shop and lounge Outside Inn is open daily, while those who prefer to eat outdoors at the poolside have a selection of items including salads, sandwiches, light bites and daily specials to choose from. The Ruby Murray serves Indian delicacies and has live music for members and their guests to enjoy. Call 17 728-245.
This spot offers patrons varied forms of sailing and water sports in a fun, friendly atmosphere on its sandy shores. It has a full marina facility for the secure safe mooring for boat owner members and access to a range of services from fuel to slip way facilities for vessels. CAPITAL CLUB THE DILMUN CLUB Founded in 1974 in Saar, families come together to socialise and pursue their sporting interests here. Besides two tennis and squash courts, two riding paddocks and the Astroturf football pitch, the club is known for its range of outlets, six in all, offering food and beverage that caters to all tastes. The Bulls Head Bar is a typical British pub-style bar, the fine-dining restaurant, Bistro, and The Inn At The Deep End are bustling eateries. BUDAIYA Barbar Temple
Bahrain residents tend to be split into tribes – either you live Manama side taking in Busaiteen, Juffair, Amwaj etc, or you live Budaiya side, taking in Saar, Janabiya, Barbar and points west. We all know about the souqs of Manama and Muharraq, the Pearling Trail and Amwaj Islands in the east. But, if you live in town, you might just be missing out on some of the great stuff on offer out west.

he area around Budaiya and Saar has much to recommend it. Saar is home to some of the island’s famous burial mounds, hundreds of earth bumps that dominate the landscape. Originating in the era of the Dilmun civilisation right up to Tylos, some have been extensively excavated revealing a great deal about the ancient life of our island. One tomb is on show in the National Museum, but it’s also fascinating to see these areas in situ with fields of mounds stretching away into the distance. Further reminders of this bygone era can be found in the Saar and Barbar temple and settlement sites, evidence of long-ago civilisations and early religions. Head out to Janabiya Highway and you will find the Royal Camel Farm, somewhere every resident should visit at least once. Though not officially advertised, it’s open to the public daily and offers the chance to get up close and personal with the ships of the desert. Say hello to camel mums and their uber-cute babies and, though the ladies can be a little protective of

their young, they’ll welcome a tasty treat, such as a carrot. If you don’t fancy coughing up cash for a hotel beach pass, head to the coast end of the Budaiya Highway to the public Budaiya Beach Park. It benefits from regular clean-ups and is a long stretch of sand, perfect for games or just strolling on a warm evening. You could even make like a local; take a picnic and enjoy some outdoor family time as the weather cools. Also, to be found on the Budaiya Highway (or rather just off it) is the Farmers’ Market. Bahraini agricultural families set up their stalls here on weekends throughout the winter months offering delicious farm-fresh produce from tomatoes to pumpkins and some real surprises such as Romanescu cauliflowers which, with their distinctive nutty taste, can be very expensive in regular stores. The 2019 opening dates haven’t been announced yet but it’s usually around late November or early December and the outdoor market runs each week until around May. Head further along the Budaiya Highway, towards Burgerland Roundabout, and, hidden in one of the small squares along from Al Jazira Supermarket, you will come across The Raven’s Nest Board Game Café. something out of a Harry Potter movie and it’s the gathering place for board gaming geeks to enjoy good coffee and hot sandwiches, while challenging each other without a games console in sight. And last but not least, no round-up of the delights of this area would be complete without a mention of Emmawash – the original Bahraini breakfast joint with its graffiti-covered walls, where you eat seated on cushions on the floor. From its original spot, it’s moved a little further along the highway and is now in a somewhat posher building but the quality of the food and the sense of fun remain.
