THE TEAM
Bahrain This Month February 2015
Publisher and Chairman George F. Middleton Email: george@bahrainthismonth.com Editorial Director Liz O’Reilly Editorial Consultant Stan Szecowka Editor Charlie Holding
This is your FINAL warning. Really, you lot, from February 7th onwards, Bahrain’s Traffic Directorate is out to ensure that irresponsible driving antics on the roads of this island are a thing of the past. With what some see as the implementation of draconian punishment measures for those disregarding the new rules, the choice is simple. You can either civilise your driving approach and ‘take the pedal off the metal’, or you can pay dearly for the cost of your intransigence – which, positively framed, will make a worthwhile contribution to the country’s national revenue; bearing in mind that the oil price is half of what it was this time last year. February is also considered by many to be the month to celebrate love and affection. As Valentine’s Day approaches, we’ve compiled an essential guide of places you can go to enjoy a romantic dinner as well as a run-down of ideal gift options for those you love and cherish. It’s not just love that’s in bloom this month; the annual Bahrain International Garden Show returns with a focus on agricultural training in the Kingdom. This week-long event promises to be packed with educational opportunities………as well as beautiful flowers! Sticking with the green theme, we sit down with third generation grower Grahame Dunling to discuss the importance of growing and buying local produce in Bahrain. Also this month, we talk with Michelin Star chef Oliver Glowig who is in the Kingdom to reveal his new menu at the Ritz-Carlton Bahrain Hotel & Spa. He spills the beans (though not literally) on creating authentic Italian fare. Check out snippets from our exclusive Backseat Chat interview with Khaleda Rajab, a head-turning fashionista and flag bearer for Middle Eastern fashion around the world. She chats about her accomplishments to date, as well as her ambitious plans for 2015. For all you petrol-heads, we put the sleek and nimble JAC J5 under the spotlight and take it for a test drive around the island. Also, check out the latest offerings from Bahrain’s premier car dealerships in our dedicated motoring section. This month sees the arrival of the sleek new S and C-Class Mercedes models and the Volkswagen Touareg. Some people really believe love makes the world go round; if that’s not actually the case, it certainly does make the ride seem more worthwhile. Our wish to all our readers is that we can all continue to live and love the way of life the Kingdom has to offer!

FEBRUARY 2015. HAPPENINGS
Go Green For all you gardening enthusiasts, the wait for the much anticipated event of the year is finally over as the Bahrain International Garden Show 2015 unveils this month. Are you an avid gardener? Do you have green fingers? Are you interested in growing your own vegetables or looking to reinvent you garden? If you answered yes to any of these questions, then this event is right up your street (or should we say garden)! The Bahrain International Garden Show (BIGS) 2015 will be held at the Bahrain International Convention and Exhibition Centre from February 25 to March 1, under the patronage of His Majesty King Hamad Bin Isa Al Khalifa with the continued support of Her Royal Highness Princess Sabeeka Bint Ibrahim Al Khalifa, Wife of the King of Bahrain and President of the Consultative Council of the National Initiative for Agricultural Development (NIAD). Bahrain takes great pride in its agricultural heritage and, considering the country’s technological and economic developments as well as urban expansion, it has become necessary to improve agricultural expertise to keep abreast of developments that are in line with the future of the agricultural sector and its sustainability. Hence, the show’s theme is ‘Agricultural Training for Sustainable Harvest’, which will focus on training programmes, education qualifications and capacity www.bahrainthismonth.com
building aimed at experts, enthusiasts, school students and graduates to enhance existing expertise and to train a new generation of specialists and technicians in the field of agricultural production. BIGS, organised by the NIAD, is Bahrain’s premiere garden and agriculture show, offering a broad platform to visitors, providing them with all their gardening needs and the perfect environment to share experiences. Visitors to BIGS include VIPs, architects, consultants, developers and other industry professionals as well as retail consumers. Over the years, exhibitors have come from the US, France, Spain, Italy, UK, Germany, Turkey, Egypt, Sudan, Syria, Iran, Thailand, Jordan, Lebanon, Yemen and Japan, in addition to all the GCC countries.
“The show has witnessed an accelerating development over the past years, extending over 7,500sq/m last year,” said general coordinator Shaikha Maram Bint Isa Al Khalifa. “We anticipate the participation of more than 100 exhibitors this year and 40 international participants, some of whom will take part under the umbrella of United Nations Industrial Development Organisation (UNIDO). We are also proud of the fruitful, continuous cooperation with Tamkeen as a key partner in this important national event,
calling upon all Bahraini companies to take advantage of the support provided by Tamkeen.” Hall One at the show, called Marketplace, will target the general public featuring flowers, nurseries, tools, pots, garden furniture, machinery, lighting and more. Meanwhile, Hall Two
will have exhibitors from both public and private sectors, showcasing the latest trends and innovations in the field of landscaping and design. Call 17 417-008, email info@bigs.com.bh or visit www.bigs.com.bh for more information.

Get your geek hats on for an exciting competition that is being hosted by Bahrain for the very first time. The VEX Robotics Competition (VRC) will be held at Crowne Plaza hotel’s main hall on February 27. VRC utilises the VEX Robotics design system, which can be either very simple or very complicated. Teams build and programme a robot to complete a task revealed at the previous year’s world championships. VRC is played on a 12-inch x 12-inch square field, with two alliances, red and blue, composed of two teams each. The teams compete in two matches - a 15-second autonomous period followed by one minute and 45 seconds of driver-controlled play. The object of the game is to attain a higher score than your opponent’s alliance by accumulating points according to the game
elements laid out in that year’s rules. The winning alliance at each local competition (and runners up at events with 51 or more teams), winners of the Robot Skills and Programming Skills Challenges and the winner of the ‘Excellence Award’ at each tournament, with at least 18 teams, qualify for the VEX World Championship that will be hosted in the US in early April. The competition is open to any individual, without the need to be represented by an organisation or school. Creativity Private School will provide all the training courses needed for these individuals at the school’s premises. Approximately 20 organisations have registered (private and government schools, youth organisations, etc.) to compete, with an overall count of 80 teams. Call 32 220-244 or visit www.thecrsme.com

If you think Shakespeare isn’t your cup of tea, think again. Entertainment+ brings you a fantastic new Shakespeare 4 Kidz (S4K) production that will have you in fits. S4K’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream, a musical version by Julian Chenery and Matt Gimblett, returns to the Bahrain stage with a brand new musical theatre adaptation for 2015. The show has been touring the UK and will hit our shores, with performances at the Cultural hall on February 11 at 8.45am and 11.45am, and on February 12 at 9am and 4.30pm. S4K’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream tells three stories that are all interwoven in one magical night in the woods outside Athens. The king and queen of Fairyland argue about the custody of a new-born Indian prince; four friends argue about an arranged marriage and six working men prepare a play to be performed at the wedding of the Duke of Athens. But mayhem ensues when Puck, the mischievous sprite, gets involved. Many of the 14-strong
cast also play live music in the show, accompanied by a live two-piece band. Returning as Puck is S4K favourite Noel Andrew Harron, along with other regulars Hywel Dowsell, Ben Goodridge, Thomas Hewitt, Clare Reilly and Harry Stone. S4K’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream has toured extensively since 1997, when it was a five-star hit at the Edinburgh Festival, and has received much acclaim in its new actormuso incarnation. “If this is children’s first taste of Shakespeare, they are very lucky,” said the associate director of one show in London’s West End. “A first-rate
production. The quality of work from every department was top-notch. I loved the original music and the talented cast whose acting and singing was so strong.” Entertainment+ has been bringing Shakespeare 4 Kidz to Bahrain for the past eight years, providing fantastic, educational and culturally enriching stage productions.
S4K’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream is an enchanting entertainment for the young and the young at heart. Ages five to 105 are recommended. Tickets are priced at BD16, with a limited special family offer of BD60 for four tickets. School offers are also available. Call 39 616-858.

COOKING WITH CURIOSITY CHARLIE HOLDING A German chef serving Italian cuisine sounds about as far away from authentic as possible. However, that’s what makes the humble pie taste so sweet when Oliver Glowig and his team dish it up.

aving spent 20 years living in Italy — with his Italian wife, Paula — this Michelin-starred chef knows more than most about what makes diners say ‘amore’ after a meal. Keen to share his unique take on Italian cuisine further afield, he struck up a partnership with Primavera restaurant at The Ritz-Carlton, Bahrain Hotel & Spa and is on a mission to provide the Kingdom with authentic, no-nonsense fare. On a recent visit to Bahrain, he held a demonstration of his culinary prowess at an exclusive media event at Primavera restaurant, which will serve his creations when it officially launches the Oliver Glowig menu in March. Oliver’s passion for cooking developed at a young age and he made the decision to pursue it professionally when he was 18. “I was curious when I went to restaurants with my parents, I was curious about the flavours, ambience and how everything worked in the kitchen and that’s where it all www.bahrainthismonth.com
began,” he explains. “My first job was in a traditional German kitchen with a French influence and I spent three years there learning my craft. After that, I spent a year working in an Italian restaurant, which really changed the way I looked at food. “The experience made me curious to see a real Italian kitchen so I went to Italy to learn. I went to Capri and that’s when I fell in love with Italian cuisine.” However, it wasn’t just the phenomenal food and rich culture that caught Oliver’s attention. “The most important reason I stayed in Italy was I met my wife there. She was working as a hairdresser at the hotel I was working in,” Oliver says. “Having an Italian mother-in-law has also definitely had an influence on me as a chef, she is always offering tips and advice.” In 2011, he opened his own restaurant in Rome, which, after only a few months, was recognised with two Michelin Stars. Christian Zandonella, general manager of The Ritz-Carlton, Bahrain Hotel & Spa, says: “We
are proud to set up this agreement with Chef Oliver Glowig. His passion for Italian cuisine transpires in his work and will help Primavera set an unprecedented benchmark in Bahrain’s culinary scene. “While the legendary service of the RitzCarlton ladies and gentlemen will remain the same, Primavera restaurant will provide Bahrain with a genuine, authentic, Italian dining experience, which we describe as Trattoria Moderna.” Although Oliver will soon be returning Rome, he has entrusted long-time colleague Chef Alfonso Ferraioli to head the kitchen team at Primavera. “Alfonso is a chef that has worked with me for several years in Italy and he will be permanently based here in Bahrain. He is someone I trust can execute my philosophy,” says Oliver. “He has my trust but in the beginning there will be daily contact via Skype to discuss how it’s going, like I said, I’m curious!” February 2015 43

RECIPE FOR SUCCESS CHARLIE HOLDING Porsche’s new brand manager talks to BTM about the company’s plans for 2015 and his determination to improve customer satisfaction.
H
aving worked for a number of automotive brands throughout his career, Colin knows the importance of a company’s reputation and Behbehani, he says, is one of the most reputable he has come across. “This company has a glowing reputation in Bahrain and, from my experience, I’ve seen nothing less than absolute professionalism from everyone,” Colin says. “Porsche is a fantastic franchise it is very precise and prescriptive in what it does and has very high standards. The brand certainly has a wide model range and just as importantly, a good customer following in Bahrain.” Colin is no stranger to luxury cars. Before moving to Bahrain six months ago he was in Saudi Arabia working for Al Ghassan Motors, looking after high-end brands such as Bentley, Lamborghini, McLaren and Bugatti. Originally from Croydon, UK, Colin is a keen sportsman and amateur chef. He recently took part in one of the Kingdom’s most popular cooking competitions. “It stems from watching my parents cook when I was young,” he explains. “I’d get in the 44 February 2015

kitchen and end up licking the bowl after a cake was made, then I realised that I wanted to know how to make it on my own.” Colin believes he’s got the recipe for success with Porsche by paying attention to the little details that make a big difference to customers. “In the past, there were issues with after sales and service retention but it’s something that I am actively trying to get back on track. We are judged every time a customer comes in — for every invoice, they receive a survey which gives us feedback on how well we’ve done,” he says. “When I first joined, there was room for improvement, but over the past few months it has gotten better and better. We’ve come a long way in a short period of time, however, there’s still more I’d like to do.”
Porsche Centre Bahrain saw a number of developments last year, including the addition of the mezzanine floor. According to Colin, the showroom is one of the best he’s seen in his career. “When I worked in the UK, I saw showrooms that looked like palaces but this facility definitely has its own wow factor. This is a nice place to work; you can’t help but enjoy it,” he says. Colin’s family remains in the UK for the time being, which he says is the only downside to living in the Kingdom. “Everyday my drive to work is from Tala, I’ve got the sea on either side of me, the sun on my face and I just have to pinch myself sometimes. The only thing that’s missing is my family here with me but we more than make up for lost time when we do see each other.” www.bahrainthismonth.com

lternative medicine has been popular for centuries and its devotees claim it can be used to treat a wide range of ailments. Bahraini Shereen Hasan Haji Abul, chief executive officer of Sherry Spa, has made it her mission to bring these age-old treatments to the masses after being certified as the first alternative medicine instructor in the GCC. After graduating from NYIT with a degree in International Business, she was with the Ministry of Works for more than 14 years. However, her life changed forever when she decided to take a year off and travel to Thailand to discover herself. This is where her passion for holistic healing began. “I realised that my passion lay in massaging 46 February 2015
people,” she says. “I felt powerful; I could heal and feel other people’s energies when I touched or massaged them. I came back certified in more than five massage techniques and different healing therapies; I got my training licence and started my business.” Alternative medicine is any practice that is put forward as having the healing effects of medicine, but is not founded on evidence gathered using the scientific method. “Alternative Medicine is a type of healing that is natural,” explains Shereen. “It’s about finding where the pain and symptoms originate from and treating you from the inside out. This also balances the body with nature and can be more effective than chemicals.” Sherry Spa offers more than 10 types of massage, including relaxation and therapeutic massage, aromatherapy and Swedish being some of the best known in the market. “We offer therapeutic massages that use
organic herbs and natural hot oils,” says Shereen. “We also have sports flexi massages like Thai Yoga, which is the first service of its kind to be offered in Bahrain and is equivalent to doing an hour of yoga.” The spa specialises in couple’s massages and is offering customers special Valentine’s packages with Shereen saying: “I recommend my signature massage, which I created, shiatsu-Swedish, a combination of dry and oil lasting for 90 minutes.” To increase awareness and provide career opportunities for Bahrainis, Shereen is in the process of opening the first massage training institute in the GCC. Bahrain International Massage School is planned to launch this year, it will provide training in various types of massage but will focus on Thai yoga techniques. The institute is calling for physiotherapists and fresh graduates of physiotherapy courses to apply for a chance to improve their healing powers. www.bahrainthismonth.com

PLANTING THE SEEDS OF SUCCESS CHARLIE HOLDING
T
In a bid to provide food security for the Kingdom, this third-generation grower is using his talent to create a first-of-its-kind growing system.
he last year has been a busy one for chief operating officer of Peninsula Farms, Grahame Dunling. Having totally redesigned the facility’s operation systems and growing methods, he’s confident that the best is yet to come. The company produces Salanova lettuce, tomatoes and peppers in Bahrain using hydroponics – a subset of hydroculture – a method of growing plants using mineral nutrient solutions, in water, without soil. This feat is even more impressive when you factor in the harsh summer climate in the Kingdom, with temperatures reaching up to 50c. Now that the hydroponics growing system is operating smoothly and consistently producing tomatoes, capsicums and Salanova lettuce, Grahame is ready for a new challenge. This month sees the implementation of a BD150,000 tomato aeroponic growing system. Aeroponics is the process of growing plants in an air or mist environment without the use of soil or an aggregate medium. It is the first fully commercial growing aeroponic system in the world and, if designed properly, it could save the world millions of gallons of water. This new system from Japan will use 90 per cent less water when it is up and running. “The reason it’s failed in the past is because people www.bahrainthismonth.com
have been using the wrong nozzles with the wrong filtration and feed,” Grahame explains. “This is where I come in, redesigning the way everything works. This is my latest challenge it’s why I’m here. There is not a commercial system like this anywhere in the world and by commercial I mean two acres or more. “I can do it because nobody else can. I thrive on people telling me something can’t be done. Can’t is not a word I recognise. Every problem has a solution. I go back to basics and start from the ground up.” The tenacious Yorkshireman left school at 16 with no qualifications, but had a wealth of firsthand experience coming from a proud tradition of growers. “My grandfather was a grower, my father was a grower and I have been involved in it for as long as I can remember. I’d come back from school and my dad wouldn’t allow me to go out with my friends until I was done helping him,” he says. Growing local produce is a point of pride for Grahame, who says that by growing locally, customers know what has happened to the produce from seed to plate. “The crops that are grown here are of a very high standard, which is needed for local produce to compete with imported products and all at a cheaper price,” he says.
“By growing salads locally and to very high hygiene standards Peninsula Farms hopes to improve the quality of local produce. By growing local it is improving the taste, texture, flavour and also the shelf life of the produce. Also by growing produce locally is it helping to reduce the carbon footprint of the so called ‘food miles’.” Grahame is keen to give credit where it is due and holds co-workers and employees in high regard, particularly the company’s general manager, Shaikh Rashid bin Khalifa Al Khalifa. “I couldn’t have done any of this without help from the staff, they took the challenge head on and now have a sense of pride and ownership of their greenhouses. Shaikh Rashid has backed me 100 per cent,” he says. “He is the perfect promoter, he is absolutely knowledgeable about the crops, he’s immersed himself in it. His knowledge and enthusiasm is amazing.” February 2015 49

BACKSEAT CHAT This month, riding in the backseat is Khaleda Rajab, a head-turning fashionista and flag bearer for Middle Eastern fashion around the world. “Its better to be over dressed than under dressed” — this is the rule that Bahraini fashion designer Khaleda Rajab lives by. She joined George Middleton in a Jaguar XJ for a tête-à-tête as they drove across Amwaj Islands. Wearing black leather pants, a loose shirt and sporting her signature red pout; it’s clear to see how her own fearless personality translates into her designs. “I think I am inherently a very confident person,” she says. “I don’t want to sound standoffish, but it is really important for a person to be that way. Believe in yourself and your instincts, especially if you are entering a new arena or market.” Khaleda was interested in fashion from a young age and always dreamt of being part of www.bahrainthismonth.com

the industry in some way or another. A flag bearer for the Middle Eastern fashion industry, celebrities such as Elissabetta Canalis, Hofit Golan, Jacqueline Fernandes, Noelle Reno and Jessica Lowndes have worn her designs. When it came to inspiration and role models, Khaleda didn’t have to go too far from home. “It might sound like a cliché but I am hugely inspired by my family. I even worked with my dad for over a year and I learnt a lot about work ethic and professionalism seeing him and my uncles working.” When it comes to design and fashion — she’s a Versace girl. She feels the bold and brash nature of the brand echoes in her own aesthetic sensibilities. “Versace has been in the industry for years with successful home, clothing and fragrance lines and is still carrying on strong. It is all about bold prints and having a signature
style — keeping it young, fresh and fun.” Khaleda Rajab Haute Couture is one of the region’s most sought-after brands, but make no mistake about it, these creations were made to be worn, not left for special occasions. “I want high fashion to be available at affordable prices and it shouldn’t just sit in your closet. You should be able to wear it for any occasion you want.” A high point of her career was designing a sunglass collection for Linda Farrow, with her business partner Fahad Almarzouq. “We used to collect Linda Farrow vintage sunglasses as kids and when the opportunity came, we were ecstatic to collaborate with the brand.” Khaleda says her secret to success lies in unwavering conviction and perseverance. TELECOMS
TRENDS TO WATCH IN 2015 CHARLIE HOLDING The telecommunications industry is one of the economy’s most active sectors thanks to the products and services — including smartphones and broadband connections — it offers.
T
echnology has become so imperative that it seems torturous to be without a smartphone, laptop or tablet for prolonged periods of time. There’s always a status to update, a picture to upload, songs to download, birds to be angry with and, lest we forget, work emails to reply to. It comes as little surprise then that consumer demand for high-speed broadband services is expected to rise worldwide this year and Bahrain’s market is no different. In a bid to improve services, Batelco’s Superfast Fibre Optic Broadband packages are available for new and current customers in areas including Saar, Riffa Views, Reef Islands, Juffair, Sanad, Khaleej, Tubli, Ishbiliya and Busaiteen. The company says that subscribers can benefit from the highest dedicated, guaranteed and stable download speeds upto 150Mb and the highest throttling speeds upto 20Mb. The rollout continues with a number of new locations to be added throughout 2015. Technological developments and the telecom sector go hand in hand and experts predict a number of trends are expected to develop substantially. One of these trends is LTE — an abbreviation for Long-Term Evolution — commonly www.bahrainthismonth.com
marketed as 4G LTE, the fourth generation of wireless standards. The first generation was analog, the second was digital and the third and current generation, or 3G, is multimedia broadband. Already available in the Kingdom, the 4G technology standards allow you to take advantage of more bandwidth and better throughput (higher rate of successful delivery across the network) and enable traditionally wired applications on wireless devices. Another trend set to make a bigger impact this year is wearable technology. Devices such as smartwatches, which (generally) connect to your phone to display notifications from apps running there, are likely to lead the charge to begin with. Whether it’s the latest devices, special packages or a combination of the two, the Kingdom’s leading telecom providers are pulling out all the stops to woo customers. In fact, they often branch out to provide opportunities for tech-savvy youngsters. Zain Group recently announced its partnership with the MIT Enterprise Forum Arab Startup Competition for its eighth edition. The competition will see more than 5,000 individuals and teams, from 21 Arab countries, apply to participate within one of three

different tracks: Ideas, Startups and Social Entrepreneurship, which focuses on adapting the idea of innovation worldwide. Each of the tracks will award the first three ranked winners with cash prizes in addition to other benefits including: top tier training, mentorship, coaching, media exposure and networking opportunities. Meanwhile, Telecommunication Regulatory Authority manager of Communications & Media, Taiba Al Binali, says last year was very successful for the telecoms sector in the Kingdom and big things are in store for 2015. “In 2015, the TRA intends to release an updated version of the 2010 ‘state of the nation review’, which will comprehensively review and analyse internet safety issues amongst adults and children in order to come out with actionable recommendations to ensure that consumers of all ages can recognise cyber challenges and that they are empowered to address them,” she says. “In the coming years, the TRA intends to put in place the right policies and mechanisms to better manage and mitigate the negative impact that such threats may pose to the overall functionality of this critical public utility, as well as the economic impacts that may arise from such threats.” February 2015 53

Rethink the Way You Drive New traffic laws will come into operation on February 7 aimed at making the Kingdom’s roads safer by changing drivers’ behaviour. Under a campaign dubbed ‘Rethink’ to publicise a raft of new rules, the country’s General Directorate of Traffic asks: “Why do people change when they get behind the wheel? Why isn’t everyone more aware on the road and more considerate to each other? We don’t want people to become statistics. It’s time to take responsibility. It’s time to make Bahrain’s roads safer. It’s time to rethink.” Launching the new laws, Director General, Shaikh Nasser Bin Abdurrahman Al Khalifa, says: “The new law will achieve the highest degree of road traffic safety and will ensure traffic smoothness by controlling the wrong traffic 58 February 2015
behaviours that led to increased mortality rates at 175 people within two years.” Major Osama Bahar, acting director at the Traffic Culture Directorate of the Ministry of Interior, adds: “The statistics prove that the cause of 51 per cent of traffic accidents is carelessness and lack of attention which makes it necessary for the General Directorate of Traffic to raise the traffic awareness of all community groups as part of continuing to apply the principle of community engagement among different community groups on one hand and the traffic police on the other.” Behaviours covered by the new laws range from failing to use a child seat or using a mobile phone while driving to jumping red lights, speeding and causing fatal accidents. CHARLIE HOLDING If you’re looking for a car that bridges the gap between style and simplicity, this sleek sedan could be the one for you.
62 February 2015
Bridging the gap between cost and quality is no easy feat, but JAC Motors may have just cracked it with the stylish J5. Chinese automaker JAC Motors (Jianghuai Automobile Co Ltd) has a wide model line that spans from commercial trucks to small city cars and the J5 is a gem waiting to be discovered. The 1.8-litre J5 not only combines luxury and practicality at a competitive price, it also delivers a comfortable and capable drive. Its exterior was created at the famous Pininfarina design centre in Italy, giving this model a refreshing European feel and character. The rear LED braking lights are a sleek addition that gives an added bit of flare to this B Class sedan. The interior is just as stylish and offers ample space for driver and passengers. The cockpit is the definition of simplicity at its best, lending credence to the fact that less is more. Everything is clearly laid-out and simple to operate, leaving you to sit back and enjoy the drive. The fully-loaded model I drove boasted leather seats, alloy wheels and an entertainment system that included a CD player, radio and USB input for MP3 players. Powered by a 1.8-litre Mitsubishi engine, this model packs plenty of punch under the bonnet. The drive is responsive and it handles city and highway driving well. Although large SUVs are popular with many drivers, they can be cumbersome to manoeuvre and even harder to park … unless you plan on mounting the
pavement like some discourteous motorists. Parking is a piece of cake in the J5, it’s nimble and the perfect size for driving in the city where parking can be an issue. Safety is an important factor and this model has several features worth noting. It boasts great active and passive safety systems and it has received five stars in the C-NCAP crash test rating. Among its other features it also includes, ABS brakes, electronic brake-force distribution, integrated side panels and dual airbags. As an added bonus, the JAC J5 is particularly fuelefficient which means you not only reduce your carbon footprint, you can travel further for less. The JAC J5 comes with five years unlimited mileage warranty and a courtesy car is available when the owner books in a service. VOLKSWAGEN BAHRAIN
Revamped for Success The new Volkswagen Touareg was unveiled during a special event at City Centre Bahrain.
68 February 2015
The 2015 model has been redesigned with new technical features and is available in a range of colours and interiors. Safety is an important factor and this model has a lot to brag about. All V6 and V8 models now come equipped with an automatic post-collision braking system, which helps prevent a secondary collision in case of an accident, bi-xenon headlights and a coasting function. “The new Touareg enjoys a refreshed exterior as well as exciting new technical additions. A leader in the premium SUV sector, the new model offers an economical experience, whether on-or off-road,” says Felix Miranda, brand manager of Volkswagen Bahrain. “Thanks to its stylish design and smart technology, the Touareg is a luxurious crossover SUV without compromise, as comfortable off-road as it is on the Kingdom’s highways. As a result the Touareg has enjoyed continued success in the kingdom and we anticipate its popularity will continue with the new model.” The new design gives the Touareg a wider and more impressive appearance. Especially distinctive are the bi-xenon headlights and the newly-designed LED daytime running lights, available from the SEL package onwards. The trapezoid-shaped lights create a line towards the re-designed radiator grille in the middle of the vehicle. In contrast to the previous model, the grille is now trimmed with four transverse chrome fins. The rear is equally impressive thanks to its new, cleanly-designed bumper which, similar to the front
end, emphasises the width of the SUV. When the Chrome & Style option is added on the V6 package, a wrap-around chrome strip is integrated in the bumper. The new Touareg is available with both V6 and V8 FSI, direct-injection petrol engines and fuel efficiency has increased by up to six per cent. The V8 versions offer extra standard features such as 18-inch alloy wheels, the Chrome & Style design package, comfort seats in Vienna leather, fine wood accents, electric opening and closing function for the boot lid, anti-theft warning system and keyless entry and engine starting system. The new model is available in 12 colours; five of which are new; light silver metallic, sweet date gold, moonlight blue metallic, black oak brown metallic and reef blue metallic. The interior is comfortable, convenient and classy thanks to fine finishes and an impressive infotainment selection. It combines rugged SUV character with sophisticated premium-class elements. In addition to the chrome accents around the control panel modules and the running gear adjustment controls, the red illumination of all controls is now white. The new Touareg boasts many features as standard such as bi-xenon headlights, all-wheel drive, 17-inch alloy wheels, cruise control system with multifunction steering wheel, RCD 550 infotainment system with touchscreen, stop-start system, regenerative braking, coasting function, climate control system, servo steering and ESC with trailer stabilisation function. Making an Impression Combining raw power with finesse and grace is no easy task, but BMW may have cracked it with the latest 7 Series.
70 February 2015
With its revamped looks and wide range of technologies, this model not only commands respect on the road, it makes an impression that lasts. Perhaps this model’s greatest accomplishment is that it can seamlessly combine the practicality and versatility of a family car with enough sophistication to ensure you’re always sitting pretty. The flagship model series of the BMW fleet embodies sporting elegance, refined powertrain technology and luxurious comfort in equal measure, its makers say. Some of the highlights include new LED headlights, an upgraded interior with optimised soundproofing, improved ride comfort, a comprehensive selection of optional equipment and state-of-the-art safety technology. A line-up of either new or optimised drive systems, including the world’s most powerful six-cylinder inline diesel engine and the second-generation BMW ActiveHybrid 7, sets new performance and efficiency benchmarks. High quality design, top-class materials, quality workmanship and practicality define the interior of the new model. The driver and front passenger can relax into leather seats that offer optimum lateral support and long-distance comfort. Rear passengers are also taken care of in this sleek sedan as they are largely cocooned from outside noise. Individual seats are available as an option for
the rear and can be adapted to passengers’ needs — ideal for families. There is an optional rear seat entertainment package with a new 9.2-inch flat screen monitor to ensure the kids are kept occupied during extended journeys. All passengers can appreciate the new 1,200-watt Bang & Olufsen surround sound system. The interior is sophisticated and comfortable, with a range of easy to use infotainment features. Extended black-panel technology opens up a new range of display options through the 10.25-inch screen. The instruments are presented using different colours and graphics — depending on the driving mode selected – and provide situation-specific information such as status and function displays. The control display in the centre of the instrument panel has visual and technical improvements and now uses high-resolution 3D graphics. Alongside the flagship BMW 760i with its 12-cylinder powerplant, there is a choice of the BMW 740i with a new TwinPower turbo six-cylinder inline engine or the BMW 750i with a revised V8 petrol engine. Meanwhile, making its debut is the new BMW 750d xDrive. Rounding off the range is the second generation BMW ActiveHybrid 7, which combines a new TwinPower Turbo six-cylinder inline petrol engine with a 40 kW/55bhp electric motor for significantly reduced emissions. Chart Toppers There are some real showstoppers on the scene this month. There are also some old favourites bringing out new albums, so there’s every reason to download and enjoy.
American Beauty/American PsychoFall Out Boy Rating: ***** Verdict:
You must give it a listen.
What’s the story?
This is the sixth studio album by rock band, Fall Out Boy who first hit the scene with their single Sugar We’re Going Down in 2005. Since then, they have left their mark as your Bermuda shorts-wearing punk rockers. They began writing their latest album in the summer of 2014 while still promoting their previous release Save Rock and Roll on the tour: Monumentour. By late November, all the songs were written and the album was 80 per cent complete but still needed finishing. Realising that musicrecording methods have differed
since their hiatus, the band embraced the latest developments while recording American Beauty/ American Psycho.
Worth a listen?
It will definitely be a throwback for you because even if you don’t warm to their latest album (you will though) it will dredge up memories from the early noughties when the songs of Fall Out Boy were your weekend anthems. The title song American Beauty/American Psycho taps into their typical sound of strained vocals, meshed cymbals and cunning word play.
Shorts
Non-Fiction – Ne-Yo
R&B veteran Ne-Yo is a firm favourite on the music scene. His new album boasts some high-profile appearances from the likes of Schoolboy Q, Jeezy, T.I, Juicy J and Pitbull among others. For the most part though, Ne-Yo handles the project solo and as an artist with plenty of big songwriting credits under his belt, it isn’t too difficult for him. Check out Time of Our Lives (feat. Pitbull). 78 February 2015
Rebel Heart – Madonna
This woman will never leave the scene – ever. She just keeps going and, no matter what your opinion, you cannot deny her endurance levels. In fact, at the heart of this album she puts forth a stirring message: “I’m gonna carry on.” She roars in this album with the likes of Nicki Minaj, but also reserves a lot of grace and vulnerability in Joan of Arc. Madonna has remained rather tightlipped on the tracks so there are currently only a few titles available, but for now, if you want a true Madge mix, go for Devil Pray.
Smoke + Mirrors – Imagine Dragons
Imagine Dragons’ epic Radioactive was a game changer song from their first studio album, Night Vision. Singer Dan Reynolds told music magazine Rolling Stone that the next album would be “different” and that the band intends the album to be “stripped back quite a bit”. Go for Warriors for hair-raising awesomeness. www.bahrainthismonth.com

games
Galvanising Game Play For February we’ve highlighted some of the best games on offer for the perfect after-work distraction and weekend relaxation.
Verdict:
It delivers a well-executed digital marriage of a collectable card game and board game with the potential for deep strategic play in the way those parts work together.
Scrolls Rating: *** What is it?
From acclaimed game design studio Mojang (the creative force behind Minecraft), Scrolls offers a new gameplay style where you fight to outmanoeuvre your opponent on the battlefield using the destructive powers of magical scrolls. Tear your opponent limb from limb with the might of your summoned armies, lay waste to the defences with the obliterating power of your siege weapons or open up the skies and let bolts of lightning shower his minions until only ash remains. The road to victory is yours to choose. Obtain the powerful scrolls and decide which ones you will take to battle as you fight to become the mightiest magician of all.
Graphics: The underlying graphics are completely respectable, though you cannot expect anything visually stunning to unfold. In terms of facets of the game that are well-done, we certainly deem the detailed character models and expansive landscapes worth mentioning. The landscapes are covered with loads of flora and fauna. However, you should not look too closely at the objects, as many of the textures appear spongy up close. Thankfully, the light/colour moods and the well-executed design make up for this shortcoming.
Gameplay: Despite its many tutorials
and trial matches designed to get you acquainted with the rules, Scrolls isn’t very accessible for new players. For example, though there are ways to look at all 360 of the current collectable scrolls, like filtering the player-to-player scrolls shop to see which scrolls you don’t have, there isn’t a dedicated area to look at your collection and see what’s missing. Accordingly, it’s hard to even know which of the four distinct factions you want to play.
Destiny
Kalimba
Assassin’s Creed Rogue
The setting follows a prosperous period of exploration, peace and technological advancement known as the Golden Age. In a universe where humans have spread out and colonised planets, an event known as “the collapse” saw the mysterious dissolution of these colonies, the end of the golden age and mankind teetering on the brink of extinction. The only known survivors are those living on Earth, who were saved by The Traveller, a white, spherical celestial body whose appearance centuries before had enabled humans to reach the stars. In Destiny, you are a guardian of the last safe city on Earth and are able to wield incredible power to defend it.
Kalimba is a simple platformer that can be played solo or in local co-op. Players move through three different worlds, attempting to move totems past enemies and environmental obstacles like changing gravity. In co-op mode, each person controls two totems. It feels both retro and new at the same time and its mind bending puzzle design and twitchy gameplay present plenty of challenge for the experienced gamer.
Assassin’s Creed: Rogue is the darkest chapter in the Assassin’s Creed franchise yet. Follow your own creed and set off on an extraordinary journey through New York City, the wild river valley and far away to the icy cold waters of the North Atlantic in pursuit of your ultimate goal – bringing down the assassins for good. For the first time ever, experience the Assassin’s Creed universe from the perspective of a Templar. The acclaimed naval components from previous games have been enhanced in this one. The game also gives players new weapons to use on both land and sea in pursuit of their goal.

www.meetup.com Rating: *****
What Is It?
Verdict: If you need to shake up your weekends, be proactive and get a group going.
It’s not exactly a brand new concept but it’s one that needs to be embraced more on the island. Sure it works best when you’re in a big city and you want to find your footing with people of similar interests and backgrounds, but the same can be done in Bahrain too, despite the already friendly and welcoming atmosphere. The main idea behind MeetUp is neighbours getting together to learn something, do something or share something. Whether that is music, business or yoga you can set up a group according to your interests and get people on board.
New Year’s Eve at the Crowne Plaza Hotel There was a Caribbean carnival theme to the hotel’s New Year’s Eve Ball which included an international dance show, DJ and live band. Jana, Jasmine, Rachel, Krystal, Al Dena & Dorsa
The Good:
The fact that this website brings people together, fills voids and entertains ideas that may be out of your comfort zone can only be a good thing. It’s a must if you’re short of things to do and want to meet new people. If you are a relative newcomer to the island or just want to meet new people, MeetUp is a great starting point.

The Bad:
Not enough people get onboard – presumably because the island is relatively small. But that’s no excuse. HE Ahmed Rasheed Khatab, Moroccan Ambassador & Fowzia
www.bop.fm In a place where “the music never stops” this website is for eclectic ears. Bop.fm is a free service bringing together the best music and videos from around the web and making them streamable from one centralised location. With both a popular and trending selection of songs, it’s like any other service but the website’s design is uber cool and graphically appealing. apps
App-solutely Essential Got a busy month ahead of you? We’ve gathered a selection of apps that will hopefully make your life easier and more efficient.
What is it? When you attend a meeting, event or class, using the GoToMeeting app you can view slide presentations, design mockups, spreadsheets, reports – anything meeting presenters share onscreen. There are two easy ways to join a session: Tap a link in an invitation email and follow the prompts or tap the GoToMeeting app icon and enter a session ID. To host a meeting, you must have a GoToMeeting account. Tap the GoToMeeting app icon and log in. If you’ve got clients across the world and need to sync up a meeting, this is a great tool.
The Good:
Essentially the app is useful when you’re on the go. It’s user-friendly, has an easy setup, is reliable and can be used to either organise or attend meetings. You can share and present documents to an audience of up to 100 attendees.
The Bad:
Go To Meeting Rating: ***** Verdict: It has a clean design and a nifty way to manage your global business affairs.
We can’t find much to fault with this app but it makes us question why we don’t use Skype instead? For conferencing and general communication Skype is the go-to but, then again, this app is specifically designed for business and has all the added features. So, no, there is nothing wrong here.

Sync between iPhone and iPad or with Easy Books – a full bookkeeping package. Entering sales information into the app is quick and easy (as you might expect). You can define products you sell and their standard selling prices, even using quantity pricing if you want to.
Adobe Reader We’re more than familiar with Adobe Reader when it comes to our computers and laptops, but that’s not to say we don’t need to access PDFs on our phones! With all the necessary features available – annotating and reviewing, signing and exporting PDFs to Word documents – this app is fast and doesn’t require a printer at all. Top Five Valentine’s Day Movies
We’ve compiled a list of essential viewing this Valentine’s Day. From surprising to qwerky and even a little soppy, there’s something on this list for everyone!
Verdict: The film doesn’t take itself too seriously and is brimming with belly laughs.
Kingsman: The Secret Service Rating: ***** Directed By: Matthew Vaughn Starring: Colin Firth, Michael Caine, Taron Egerton and Samuel L. Jackson
The Plot:
Based on the comic book of the same name, Kingsman: The Secret Service tells the story of a super-secret spy organisation that recruits an unrefined but promising street kid into the agency’s ultra-competitive training programme just as a global threat emerges from a twisted tech genius.
Worth Watching? If you want to watch an ultra violent,
James Bond-style action comedy, this will fulfil all expectations. And as for Brit Colin Firth, there is no stiff upper lip from him – he totally whoops his role, American style. However, this film is not for the easily offended or the squeamish. It is a comedy but a very, very violent kind of comedy.

right, colourful, young and bursting with energy; Lumee Street Café in the Tawaweesh section of Al A’ali Shopping Complex breaks away from its businesslike surroundings in a fun and delicious way. Inspired by the street cafés of the region, the restaurant adds a dash of vibrancy to the milieu. With tables arranged outside in the aisle for an outdoorsy effect, it’s easy to spot it from a distance. As you enter the space, high ceilings lined with hanging wooden panels and rugs and asymmetric table placement give an eccentric clue of what’s to come on the menu. Be it a romantic meal or any lunch or dinner throughout the year, Shoo Fee Ma Fee Lebanese Restaurant in Adliya is certainly worth a visit. As you step inside this two-story venue, the first thing you notice is the décor that strikes a balance between casual and chic. Bright hues of red, green and yellow dominate furnishings and walls and ample natural light fills the space during the day. Named after a Lebanese catch phrase for ‘Whats up’ the restaurant provides a casual dining environment. The venue has both indoor and outdoor seating that is bright and open with plenty of space for private gatherings and functions as well. The overall appeal is casual and informal but the same can’t be said about the food, which the kitchen staff takes very seriously. The menu contains a selection of modern dishes that have traditional roots and, despite being predominantly Lebanese, caters to a wide range of palates. Whether it is steaming hot breads or oven-fresh pizzas you can draw comfort from knowing that everything you eat is freshly cooked. The delicious, modern Lebanese cuisine is served in large portions so it is not difficult to understand why Shoo Fee Ma Fee has garnered a loyal following. RIC’S KOUNTRY KITCHEN
A Slice of Americana Known for its home-style cooking, this restaurant in the heart of Juffair now includes a steakhouse that serves up delicious barbecue. A home away from home for American expats on the island, Ric’s Kountry Kitchen has gained a reputation for serving unpretentious and authentic food. In addition to a packed house in Ric’s, you can now find many patrons heading to El Rancho Steakhouse & Cantina, located on the first floor. Featuring an authentic Mexican menu, El Rancho offers a wide range of fajitas, taquitos and quesadillas along with quality cuts of meat. The restaurant only serves USDA-certified Black Angus steaks and prime ribs, imported from the USA. The restaurant has undergone extensive renovations that have created a seamless transition from the downstairs area to the upstairs venue. El Rancho also has its own entrance through a courtyard corridor of vibrant colours that reflects the Mexican spirit, the company says. “Our Tex-Mex menu includes the favourites you would expect from the southwestern style of American cuisine,” notes Rick Abernathy, the managing director. “While Tex-Mex tones down the more spicy aspects of Mexican cuisine, customers can still order food as hot as they like it.” Ric’s prides itself on feeling like ‘home’ and treating customers like one of the family. So, sit back and indulge in hearty portions of food brought straight to your table by the friendly staff. From mouth-watering breakfasts to burgers, steaks, sandwiches and buffets, Ric’s offers the whole package.

ENGIE’S RESTAURANT & CAFÉ
An Evening in Paris This culinary boutique takes you and your loved one on a culinary journey to the city of romance this Valentine’s Day.
Paris is regarded as one of the most romantic cities in the world. It has inspired poets, artists, musicians and lovers for generations and there is palpable passion in whatever the Parisians do. Offering a unique blend of Parisian and Middle Eastern flavours is Engie’s Restaurant & Café, located at Seef Corner Mall. Relax in the venue’s elegant settings while enjoying a decadent spread of exquisite creations this Valentine’s Day. Bathed in plenty of natural light, the restaurant’s ambience is airy, fresh and relaxing. The beige and ochre colour scheme is beautifully accented by the wooden texture of the floor. Spread across two floors the venue can seat up to 250 people. Valentine’s special For your romantic rendezvous this month the restaurant has created a special menu for two, which is priced at BD24++. This decadent experience includes creative mocktails such as Pink Passion and Red Temptation and a range of appetisers to share. Continue with delightful main course dishes like muffin seared prawns, sole fillet with clams to name a few, which are served with a selection of homemade bread. Finish this with a combination of lovely desserts like Duo Tendresse and chocolate hearts. The restaurant’s menu is a combination of timehonoured Parisian recipes with a powerful infusion of eclectic flavours from across the world. The Viennoiserie (baked goods) such as the freshly

buttered croissant, Danish pastries and the beautifully light and flaky pain au chocolat, are a particular point of pride for this chic eatery Chef Catora Olivier has created an ingenious variety of dishes that display French culinary finesse and understanding of global flavours. From l`êle aux épices, which is lentil soup with crispy fried calamari, to souvenir de Bali, a tempura preparation, packed with oriental flavours there is a lot to explore at Engie’s. The dessert section is loaded with sinful offerings, such as the chocolate fondant, served with white chocolate ice cream and custard caramel; aptly named ‘Le Wow’. The restaurant also offers glutenfree options. Do not hesitate to discover the unique place for a breakfast as early as 7.30am. There are several scrumptious bites that you can have on the go and if you have time to savour the flavour, try carrousel — soft brioche stuffed with tomato, scrambled egg and herbs, or plein d’énergie — bang bang bread with spiced date and lamb confit. Everything on the menu is prepared fresh, right down to the breads, cookies and confectionery, and this is perhaps why the food here tastes so different. Engie’s strength lies in the fact that all items are made in-house, including the butter which is churned everyday. Call 17 580-028. www.bahrainthismonth.com

This month as the culinary district dishes up its finest offerings, La Vinoteca Barcelona and Café Amsterdam have come together to deliver the perfect Valentine’s Day meal. Choose between the glamorous atmosphere of La Vinoteca or the classic ambience of Café Amsterdam for a unique meal with that special someone. The three-course menu — which is the same at both venues — features a sumptuous selection. Start your evening with the ‘tapas and amuse-bouche’; consisting of heart artichokes with tomato velvet, goat cheese stuffed hibiscus flowers and avocado tartar with cinnamon foam. For starters, choose between white asparagus, served with poached egg in hollandaise sauce, duck ham and figs carpaccio or Spanish tomato salad served with olive oil caviar, fresh rocket and marinated olives tapenade. For your main course, you can choose between poached Scottish salmon, infused with lemongrass, coriander semouline and roasted root vegetable salad, or slow roasted Wagyu beef cheeks, served with pan-fried foie gras pastille, sweet potato puree and fresh sprouts Vegetarian food lovers can also choose the roasted pumpkin risotto with strawberries and fresh fennel salad. Bringing this decadent meal to a befitting end are two delicious dessert options, which are Vla — an orange sponge cake topped with white chocolate sauce, caramelised kumquats and red fruits or the soft heart chocolate cake with homemade raspberry sorbet and almond crumble. To further lift your spirits there are romantic St Valentine’s mignardises. To help create the perfect ambience, the restaurants will be offering entertainment. The price per couple is BD60, which includes complimentary chocolates, water and soft drinks. Call 17 007-404 (Café Amsterdam) and 17 007-808 (La Vinoteca Barcelona).

Heart-shaped Box You can’t put a price tag on love, maybe that’s why when it comes to buying a gift for your sweetheart, it can be particularly difficult. From vouchers of ‘me time’ to luxurious getaways, we at Bahrain This Month have come up with various ideas to help you say, “I love you” this February.
gorgeous locations there are to choose from, from picturesque Oman to Greece, Cyprus, Turkey and even the backwaters of Kerala. Adrenaline rush: If your man is an adventure junkie, here’s your chance to show how much you care about his interests. Arrange for a track experience at the Bahrain International Circuit where he can try out four exciting cars on the circuit. Bahrain has a number of paddy diving sights and centres like BISS Marine at Amwaj Marina where he can train before going on a diving expedition. If you’re willing to go that extra mile, how about booking a skydiving session in Dubai? Retail therapy: The urban alpha male is certainly style conscious. But, having said that, it’s safer to avoid clothes and better to go for leather goods, sunglasses, perfumes, bar accessories and books. Check out stores like Massimo Dutti, Boggi, Al Hawaj and Ferrari. Gadgets: This is a popular choice, but needs a little forethought. There’s a plethora of options available, so start paying attention in advance to know exactly what he wants. Anything from a new phone to Smart devices and games will be great.
GIFTS FOR HIM Luxury accessories: Watches are for men what jewellery is for women. Prestigious brands like Perrelet, Van Cleef & Arpels and IWC have cutting-edge designs and are ideal for anyone who enjoys the finer things in life. If he adores antique designs and classic looks, try something like Radiomir by Panerai. For the sporty type, try something on the lines of Raymond Weil. From cufflinks to bracelets, there is a lot more bling out there for men than you would imagine. Choose from the flamboyant Armenta or the intricate Buccellati designs or Cartier and David Yurman as edgier pieces. Asia Jewellers carries the majority of these high-end brands.
Simple things: Sometimes it’s the simple things that bring the most joy. How about getting him a limited edition pack of his favourite comic book? Some men would actually be over the moon to get superhero merchandise or a cool Lightsaber. Check out stores like Jashanmal and Party Daze in Adliya. You can even do customised T-shirts, mugs or bags.
Romantic getaway: This year, Valentine’s Day falls during the weekend, presenting the perfect opportunity to plan a holiday. Aim for somewhere close; maximum three hours away. You’ll be surprised how many 110 February 2015

GIFTS FOR HER Luxury Accessories: A beautiful watch will not only help her keep track of time but add to her style as well. Asia Jewellers boasts a great collection of brands ranging from Escada, Versace to Cartier. Jewellery is also a popular choice, but for Valentine’s Day, keep it simple and romantic. Delicate charms are your best bet and there’s a good variety to choose from at A La Mode and Kooheji Jewellery. Spa session: Treat her to a day of luxurious facials, massages and body wraps at one of the world-class spas in the Kingdom. Be it regal treatment at the award winning Al Areen Palace & Spa, hydrotherapy at the Thalassa Spa at Sofitel Bahrain or a pampering session at Dessange Paris or Joz Salon, she will love every moment of it. Sailing the high seas: Bahrain has picturesque coast lines, so why not explore it together. Charter a boat or maybe even a yacht and venture out into the azure horizon. Leave early if you are headed to Jarada; the sandy strip disappears by 4pm.
Retail therapy: Now remember, the market caters to the female shopper with an unending array of must-haves, so focus is paramount. City Centre Bahrain is a good place to start. For bags and shoes there’s Tags and, for lingerie, head to La Vie en Rose and Women’s Secret. There are a number of make up stores like Make Up For Ever, Bobby Brown and Inglot. For body lotions you can try Bath & Body Works and L’occitane. A good fragrance is never a bad idea and there are plenty to choose from at Paris Gallery, Al Hawaj and Syed Junaid Perfumes. www.bahrainthismonth.com
Chocolates and flowers: The effect chocolate has on women is well noted. From dark deliciousness to rich truffles and chocolate covered strawberries, pick your weapon of choice this year. You can find a wide selection of gourmet chocolates at Delice Bahrain and Maya Chocolates. Team them with a fresh bunch of roses and see her heart melt.
Gadgets: These are not just for boys; there is a whole range of cool electronics for women as well. Choose something fun like the Nike Fuelband or a funky pair of headphones such as Beats by Dre. You can also go for an iPod or a new phone she likes. Steer clear of any kind of grooming products like epilators and straightening irons. Check out Lulu Hypermarket for some good deals. Absolute don’ts Kitchen ware, wall art, ‘me time, hugs or kisses’ vouchers, a gift card and if you paid any attention while pretending to watch the movie Sex and the City with her — a flat screen TV. Bahrain’s electronic music scene opens a new chapter this month with the introduction of Waveform — a brand that grew out of Bahrain Trance Nation. The idea is simple and organic, to hold more events focused around this genre. Come down for their pre launch party at Txoko on February 5 where this group of four, namely Liam Trigg, Amir Hussain, Gareth Weston and Andy Collins, give you a taste of what’s to come over the next few months. “Trance music for all of us has been the binding force that brings people together. We have made so many friends around the globe because of it,” says Andy. “When I moved to Bahrain, I met some really cool people and we all decided to organise more trance music events for people like us.” In December 2014, Waveform was created with the vision to hold events in Bahrain and England, bringing the best trance DJs from around the world. www.bahrainthismonth.com
On the 5th, Saudi-based DJ brothers Baxxter & Moody Zahrani make their Bahrain debut with the opening set, followed by Liam Trigg, who is from Ireland. Next on the line up, AJOC will play a classic, vocal trance set followed by Gareth Weston, taking you through the history of trance with another set. Sidney rounds off the evening with fresh, new-age beats. On the deck Gareth started DJ’ing about 10 years ago, his main influences being Scot Project, Yoji Biomehanika and Uberdruck. He began working in the studio and soon achieved his own signature sound. Labels like Aria Knights and Digitized Recordings saw this and it didn’t take him too long to start topping the charts. His collaboration with Darren Porter ‘The Tesla Effect’ was a major hit in 2012 and was picked by John O’Callaghan for his Subculture Selection on Armada. Liam Trigg grew up in Leeds, a place that has
Liam Trigg
recently become the trance capital of Northern England. The frequently-held trance events gave Liam the bug and he first tried his hand at mixing in 2011 and he hasn’t looked back since then. He has grown a large following in Bahrain with his crowd-pleasing progressive trance tunes. Trance was a huge part of Andrew James Owen Collins’ (AJOC) life. His older brother educated him through his mixes and took him to the biggest trance events in the UK. He started mixing in 2007, experimenting with all sorts of trance styles from progressive to psytrance. Andrew delivers an energetic set and has performed in the UK, Vietnam, Kenya and more recently at events in Bahrain. Waveform is planning a roster of gigs; one of them will be with UK-based label Elevation Audio bringing Bahraini and their resident DJs, Allen Watts & Lewis Duggleby, together. This event will be repeated again in July at Ministry of Sound London. February 2015 115

Flying High
Qatar Airways is firmly on course for success this year following the addition of a key new European destination and the induction of ultra-modern aircraft.
122 February 2015
Qatar Airways will now operate a daily route from Doha to Frankfurt, Germany, using the world’s most advanced plane, the Airbus A350 XWB. The A350 XWB twin-engine jetliner will shape the future of air travel by offering a complete family of new-generation aircraft that are best suited to the changing market requirements for size, range, revenue generation, environmental efficiency and passenger comfort. The Qatar Airways A350 XWB (Xtra Wide Body) will provide superior levels of comfort and reliability using the very latest state-of-the-art technology for a totally unique passenger experience, says the company. It is designed not only for environmental efficiency but also for passenger comfort. Wider seats in both Business and Economy Classes, the lowest twin engine noise level of any aircraft in its class, advanced air conditioning technology and full LED mood lighting, all work together to enhance the comfort of passengers, while reducing fatigue after a long flight. The A350 XWB cabin design — with its smooth curves, flowing lines, innovative lighting and wide windows, all inside an extra-wide body — helps create a pleasant and soothing atmosphere. In addition, straighter side walls and a flat floor in the cabin increase the feeling of spaciousness aboard this next-generation jetliner. The seats and special amenities in each of the cabin classes are proprietary to Qatar Airways and have been crafted in close collaboration with the respective manufacturers.
Frequent flyers all too familiar with tedious boarding experiences also have something to look forward to upon arrival. There is a unique dome-ceiling entrance that provides welcome light distribution and a refreshing change of scenery. With the jetliner split into two sections — Business and Economy — all passengers have a unique experience ahead of them. Business Class boasts 36 seats in a 1-2-1 configuration, featuring 80-inch fully flat beds and 17-inch HD in-flight entertainment screen, while all the seats have direct aisle access. Meanwhile, Economy Class is also impressive and has 247 seats that are 18-inches wide in a 3-3-3 configuration. There are 10.6-inch in-flight entertainment screens and more space at shoulder level for passengers in window seats, thanks to a vertical side wall panel design. In-flight entertainment may never be the same again. The aircraft features a state-of-the-art Oryx entertainment system with more than 1,000 entertainment options on individual screens in all
www.bahrainthismonth.com
classes. This system will be operated on the latest digital platform and includes a digital handset, offering a ‘second screen’ experience. This will allow, for example, passengers to have the moving map displayed on the handset to follow a journey, while at the same time watching a movie on the main screen. If passengers choose to utilise their own entertainment options, there is a USB and Apple iPort socket available in all classes. GSM, GPRS and Wi-Fi are also available in all classes for use on laptops, phones and tablets. The A350 XWB features wide panoramic windows that go from fully transparent to 100 per cent light-blocking, offering extra flexibility and customised comfort. Meanwhile, optimal cabin air quality is achieved by advanced air conditioning technology and unique control of the humidity level. The aircraft’s engines have optimised fuel burn, low maintenance costs and extra reliability, and they have the lowest CO2 emissions of any aircraft in the widebody category. The A350 XWB fuel consumption is 25 per cent lower than the competition, thanks also in part to a lower weight achieved via the use of 70 per cent advanced materials (including 53 per cent composites). “With the unique combination of passenger comfort, technological innovation, lowest seat mile cost in its class and unprecedented revenue potential, the A350 XWB has the extras that make the difference,” says a spokesperson. Qatar Airways has 80 A350s on order and the airline’s experts worked closely with Airbus on the design and definition of the A350 XWB programme. The A350 XWB is the latest generation of long-range civil aircraft and comprises 53 per cent lightweight composite materials. It is powered by two new-generation Rolls Royce Trent XWB engines, each providing 84,000lb of thrust. Easily recognisable, the A350 XWB has cockpit windows that are surrounded by a distinctive black line in the shape of a pair of sunglasses and the aerodynamic wing
www.bahrainthismonth.com
has been designed to adapt during the flight, morphing while airborne, changing shape for maximum aerodynamic efficiency. Its shaped wing tips also make it look like no other aircraft and contribute to its remarkable fuel efficiency, according to Airbus. The A350 XWB aircraft operates a daily flight to Frankfurt from Doha’s new hub, Hamad International Airport, and this will be followed by the airline’s second A350 XWB from March 1.

PUMA
Kicking High Football fans are in for a treat as PUMA launches the next generation of the evoPOWER 1.2 FG boot and will take rivalry to another level with its ‘Head to Head’ campaign for 2015.
134 February 2015
PUMA is launching its newest football boot this month in conjunction with ‘Head to Head’, its campaign for this year. So you could say that rivalry will make the game, but the all new evoPOWER 1.2 FG will make the difference. Like its predecessor, the new boot is inspired by the power generated through a barefoot kick. With the latest innovations and technology, this new evolution further enhances the foot-to-ball relationship, grounded in the principles of barefoot kicking, making the boot a natural extension of the foot. The new evoPOWER 1.2 FG generates more accuracy, flexibility, stability and control when kicking.
The boot is engineered to create a smooth kicking surface at the moment of impact, further maximising that ‘sweet spot’ when striking. Its lightweight and soft microfibre Adaptlite upper material stretches in a longitudinal not lateral direction, allowing freedom of movement whilst still maintaining support for the foot. Combining the gradual stability frame outsole technology, the foot bends with a kinetic motion similar to being barefoot, to help the player create increased power, especially when shooting. Improved with the GripTex print that runs across the length of the upper part of the boot, the evoPOWER1.2 FG enhances the grip on the ball in both wet and dry conditions, giving the player increased control. The lightweight AccuFoam lining is extended beneath the upper forefoot area to even out the curvatures of the player’s foot during ball impact, which gives added precision. This combined with the upper material to provide a clean kicking surface, helps to increase accuracy when passing and shooting using different areas of the boot. In addition to the impact and accuracy, the evoPOWER1.2 FG boot provides flexibility by using a lightweight Pebax outsole and a gradual stability frame to offer forefoot flex and midfoot stability, as well as the external EverFit cage, which optimises lateral stability. Head To Head, which is PUMA’s football campaign for 2015, will explore the notion of rivalry and ‘oneupmanship’, showing how PUMA players are always striving to outperform each other. The evoPOWER 1.2 rollout will feature Mario Balotelli and Cesc Fàbregas as the lead assets supported by other PUMA players throughout the year including Olivier Giroud, Yaya Touré, Diego Godín and Dante. “The new evoPOWER boots are really impressive. I’ve been testing them for a while in training and PUMA has made an already very good boot even better. I can feel the power evoPOWER gives me when I shoot, that’s very important for a striker,” says Mario Balotelli. The new evoPOWER 1.2 FG boots are available in store from this month, with a full colour aligned collection including training apparel and accessories, shin pads and balls available for purchase. Fitness and wellbeing will take centre stage at this year’s Health & Wellness Expo and provide an excellent opportunity for local and regional businesses, including fitness clubs and spas, to promote their services to the public. Organised by the Bahrain Exhibition and Convention Authority (BECA), the expo is due to be held from April 28 to April 30. The healthcare industry in Bahrain operates to some of the highest and most professional standards in the region, thereby providing consumers an opportunity to broaden their horizons and explore various options available to them. “Bahrain is home to a wide variety of businesses involved in the health services segment and we hope the expo will serve as a platform to raise the profile of their brands and to develop new opportunities for revenue growth,” says Hassan Jaffar Mohamed, chief executive officer of BECA. By bringing together professionals globally within the health and wellness market, BECA will utilise the exhibition to promote Bahrain as the regional hub for their businesses. The objective of the Health and Wellness Expo is to increase awareness for GCC residents on how to live a good and healthy lifestyle. The expo will also provide a platform for industry professionals to have Business to Business (B2B) get-togethers to help
them gain maximum exposure for their brands, better networking opportunities and increase revenue. “Our aim is to promote a holistic lifestyle that makes a positive contribution in our day-to-day living,” adds Hassan. “By increasing awareness of the opportunities available to consumers, the Health & Wellness Expo seeks to encourage everyone to adopt a healthy life.” Apart from participating organisations providing a vast selection of health services and products as well as authentic advice and remedies, the expo will also feature a variety of live demos. International and regional exhibitors will include buyers, retailers, importers, exporters, distributors and doctors from Bahrain, Saudi Arabia, India, Thailand and Hong Kong. This three-day event will aid exhibitors from different parts of the world to consider investing their businesses in Bahrain and using its strategic location to enhance their image. The expo is supported by the Ministry of Industry & Commerce, Ministry of Health and Bahrain Chamber of Commerce & Industry, with Bahrain This Month and Woman This Month as media sponsors. This year BECA is also offering local companies the opportunity to sponsor the event and gain more market coverage locally and regionally. The show will open daily from 10am to 7pm and admission is free. Visit www.healthexpobh.com. www.bahrainthismonth.com

Achieving Great Heights Bahrain-based Dadabhai Development and Property Management Company (DDPM) has added another feather to its cap by winning the Rolls-Royce sponsored Arabian Property Awards.
www.bahrainthismonth.com
Dadabhai Development and Property Management Company (DDPM)’s constant pursuit of excellence has paid off with recognition among the best developers in the Middle East. DDPM’s highly successful ‘Juffair Heights’ project won the ‘Highly Commended Residential High-Rise Development’ award at the Arabian Property Awards 2014-2015. Pegasus Real Estate, the project’s exclusive sales agent, also competed against several other property professionals in the region to receive the ‘Highly Commended Property Consultancy Marketing’ award at the same event. Companies from 12 countries across Arabia participated and the winners were honoured at a high-profile gala presentation dinner, in the presence of Malcolm Sinclair, the Earl of Caithness, chairman of the judges’ panel for development categories. The event took place at the Joharah Ballroom, Madinat Jumeirah in Dubai on December 4, 2014, and was attended by presidents, CEOs, managing directors, chairmen and other decision makers from within the property and real estate industry. “Winning one of these coveted awards is evidence that DDPM is capable of outperforming some exceedingly strong contenders within the highly competitive Arabian property arena,” says Shabeer Dadabhai, DDPM managing director. The Arabian Property Awards are part of the long established International Property Awards, with winners’ logos recognised as a symbol of excellence throughout the global industry. “Levels of excellence and innovation continue to rise within the property industry year after year, making the
attainment of one of these awards increasingly difficult, yet even more valued,” says Stuart Shield, president of the International Property Awards. Juffair Heights is a freehold twin tower development, which was launched in April last year, offering luxurious, spacious and affordable homes to both Bahrainis and expatriates, with prices starting from BD50,000. It features 376 one-, twoand three-bedroom apartments and buyers have the option of combining them into larger three- or fourbedroom units. This well-planned, affordable, modern housing complex is located in a secure area, spread over 58,000sq/ft, offering a vast array of lifestyle facilities. The property features indoor sporting facilities such as a basketball court, as well as football and cricket pitches that further enhance the overall living experience of owners and residents. Adding a technological advancement to the project are the real time cameras placed at different locations on site providing owners and prospective buyers a current perspective of the ongoing works at the site. This has helped raise the confidence of buyers who can actually see their project taking shape from any part of the world on any smart device. The project is well underway with slab 14 of the South Tower now in place. The works on the central area, housing three levels of parking, the outdoor common facilities and the North Tower have also gained momentum with visible columns. And the first slab of the common areas has been placed putting the project 20 days ahead of schedule. Call 17 587-575 or visit www.juffairheights.com. February 2015 139

ALOSRA
Homegrown Goodness Bahrain’s ‘fresh and friendly supermarket’ has teamed up with executive chef Susy Massetti to encourage islanders to buy local products for tastier and more nutritious meals.
140 February 2015
Alosra supermarket is encouraging customers to buy Bahraini produce with its Think Local initiative, which aims to showcase the excellent locally produced fruits and vegetables in Bahrain. Most ‘fresh’ produce found in supermarkets is picked four to seven days before being placed on the shelves and is shipped for an average of 1,500 miles before being sold, meaning it simply doesn’t live up to the title. Unlike imported goods, local products are much fresher and carry less preservatives and artificial chemicals. This means that locally-grown fruits and vegetables are more nutritious. Another benefit of buying local is that transportation costs are reduced, which means you get a lower price at the checkout till and there’s less pollution to the environment. Buying local also encourages local farming, which expands Bahrain’s agriculture industry and helps sustain and develop the economy. The supermarket chain — in partnership with acclaimed Chef Susy — has also launched a set of nine recipe cards that can be made using local ingredients. Her exquisite preparations include homemade sun-dried tomatoes, ciabatta bread, broccoli and prawn pasta and baked areesh cheese.
These cards can be found across Alosra branches in Saar, Nakheel Centre, Amwaj, Riffa Views, Juffair and Durrat Al Bahrain. Quality and value Serving Bahrain with quality produce for more than three decades, Alosra supermarket provides fresh items at great value. Part of the BMMI Group, the store’s philosophy is to deliver quality over quantity with its range of carefully selected products. “We have always focused on offering premiumquality products in the Kingdom, to satisfy all the needs and tastes of our diverse base of loyal customers,” says Pavlos Babiolakis, Alosra’s marketing and product development manager. ASIA JEWELLERS
Celebrating the Core aesthetics as well and is an integral part of the Turbine Collection. The finely trimmed components and finishes add a final touch to the beauty of the movement. In this particular model, the aluminium turbine is directly mounted on the under-dial and therefore does not obstruct the view of the mechanism. When in motion, one can see the delicate architecture through the openings on the turbine; a truly remarkable and first of its kind design. The dial is a 44 millimetre diameter case and is available in steel with a black PVD coating or fitted with a pink gold bezel. The inner bezel ring ensures optimal readability thanks to luminescent Arabic numerals and hour-markers. The hour and minute hands are coated in a substance called Superluminova and hence the red coloured seconds hand stands out clearly against this backdrop. The strap can be calfskin leather with a polyurethane core to guarantee ergonomics and a comfortable feel or black rubber for a resolutely sporty look. The assertive aesthetics of this timepiece, deeply rooted in the DNA of the brand, together with contemporary style and cutting-edge technology make this piece appealing for watch connoisseurs of all ages. Get a closer look at Asia Jewellers outlets. Call 17 535-344. This collection skilfully meets the expectations of all kinds of watch lovers; whether you are an admirer of aesthetics, marvel at sophisticated engineering or need ultimate precision.

After its ground-breaking beginnings, followed by a traditional period, Perrelet is now dabbling in avantgarde. It’s all about cutting-edge designs and technology coming together to form time pieces that break away from the convention and set new standards in luxury timekeeping. For the first time, the maison combines a skeleton structure with turbine movement, thereby completely reinventing one of its iconic models. The Turbine Skeleton collection displays technical expertise with a flair for contemporary aesthetics. The very nature of a skeleton timepiece relies on playing with transparency effects. That is precisely what Perrelet achieves by entirely skeletonising its finely crafted in-house movement, Caliber P-381, featuring cut-out effects that reveal its inner workings. The craftsmanship demonstrates matchless finesse in developing this stunning skeletonisation that requires a supreme degree of competence and accurate knowledge of the movement’s technical constraints. The Gold Standard In an attempt to represent its rich heritage this master watch manufacturer has combined its aesthetic legacy with a futuristic vision and delivered a creation that is truly unique.
142 February 2015
Watch connoisseurs are counting down the seconds to get a look at the latest offering from Arnold & Son — the Golden Wheel. The Golden Wheel watch marks a new ‘Star Wheel’ style complication which many collectors have great enthusiasm for. This is a concept also known as “wandering hours” which has been around since the 17th century. The new addition marks a return to the wandering hours concept with a dash of Arnold & Son character to liven it up, resulting in a creation that is truly unique. In an attempt to regularly showcase its watchmaking expertise, the brand is known to unveil complicated designs with a unique twist. The patented Golden Wheel reflects the brand’s ingenuity and commitment to haute horlogerie. The piece combines the wandering hours function with the true beat seconds complication. It is a part of the Instrument Collection, which pays tribute to the timepieces focused on chronometry, developed during the second half of John Arnold’s life and with his son Roger. The wandering hours function, occupies the top arc of the watch dial, from 10 o’clock to 2 o’clock. Beneath it comes the time-carrousel with a true beat
seconds hand from the central axis, adding visual complexity and elegant motion, its makers say. The precision function enables the seconds to beat incrementally as opposed to sweeping along the dial — allowing for more accurate reading. Another great feature of the watch is that the designs make the mechanism visible from the dial, displaying the whole mechanism. The brand uses three separate transparent sapphire disks for time indication and the other movement parts are arranged in an elegant manner, creating a three-dimensional allure. In addition to this, the central time-carrousel is solid 18-carat red gold, giving the masterpiece its golden credentials. A mother-of-pearl arc displays the current hour and gold arrows on the sapphire hourdisks point to the minutes’ dial-frame. The true beat seconds indication is displayed through a large graduated outer ring on the dial and read via the central golden hand. This magnificent movement is housed in a 44-millimetre, 18-carat red gold case. The Golden Wheel is a limited edition of only 125 timepieces and can be purchased at Asia Jewellers. DESSANGE PARIS
Not Just Skin Deep This venue invigorates you from within before you head out for your special date this Valentines Day. We at Bahrain This Month put it to the test and can totally vouch for it.
144 February 2015
Located in the middle of the bustling Adliya district, Dessange Paris takes you on a journey that exceeds all expectations. This five-star spa and salon service provides personalised attention every step of the way. If you arrive a little ahead of your appointment, don’t worry, you can use the steam, sauna and plunge pool facilities while the staff prepares for your treatment. After placing your belongings in a locker and receiving a soft towel, robe and slippers, you are escorted to the spa for the first treatment in this rejuvenating package — the Moroccan bath. Designed to deeply exfoliate, it leaves your skin feeling fresh and extremely soft. As you settle in the steam-filled room, a black olive soap is applied all over you body and left to soak in. The soap and steam help to open the pores and prepare the body for the exfoliation. Using a kassa glove, the attendant then starts the scrubbing, which goes on for about 10-15 minutes. You can bring your own kassa glove or purchase one for BD5. After this, a clay pack is applied all over your body and is absorbed deep into the skin, further nourishing and moisturising it. Once you wash it off, scented cold water is splashed on to close the pores, leaving the skin looking radiant and smooth. After the treatment, the pampering continues as you are escorted to the relaxation lounge for some refreshments. After a cup of ginger tea and some fresh fruits, head to the salon for a ‘mani-pedi’.
Sit back and relax with your hands and feet immersed in lukewarm water. After an intensive cleaning and filing session, get your favourite colour applied to your nails and head to the last station, to get your hair done. A creamy concoction is applied to the scalp and after a massage, it’s washed off as you relax, sitting in a massage chair. This is followed by a blow-dry. The whole package takes about two and half hours and is a great way to prepare before heading out for a special event. One thing that deserves a special mention is the fact that Dessange works on schedule; before you know it, your attendant is ready to take you to the next treatment. Call 17 713-999.

AQUARIUS
Jan 21 – Feb 20
This month it is going to be all about the progression of a relationship as you and a partner look to move things to the next level. Thankfully, Valentine’s Day will give you the best chance yet to confirm your feelings for each other with a potential trip away very much on the cards. You can sometimes be accused of being too cerebral but this February you’ll prove those critics wrong in a big way. For a detailed, personalised Tarotscope reading, contact Raphael by email: raphael@tarotscope.org.uk
LEO July 21 – August 21
Fiery and flamboyant, this Valentine’s Day could be quite an explosive one for many of you as a secret is revealed and the consequences of it may lead to some embarrassing scenes. There isn’t much you can do to prepare for this, other than to perhaps admit to any indiscretions rather than continue with a façade. You don’t want to make matters worse than they already are by continuing a lie.
VIRGO August 22 – September 21
You may not always be associated with romance because of your largely analytical approach to life but it would be fair to say that this is an unfair label because you can mix it up with the best of them when you want to. This February 14th there will be a great opportunity for you to try something different and you may even surprise yourself with the outcome!
LIBRA September 22 – October 21
As the other sign ruled by Venus, you are no stranger to matters of the heart so you have a great fondness for this particular time of the year. As you might expect there are many opportunities for romance and those of you who are looking for a new relationship will be pleased to learn that it is all going to happen this Valentine’s Day. S,o get your glad rags on and hit the high life!
PISCES February 21 – March 20
Ever the dreamer and one of the Zodiac’s most romantic signs, this month will see you looking for love in one place but quite unexpectedly finding it in another! That is going to make this Valentine’s Day all the more exciting and if you have aspirations for it to be a date to remember then all the signs are it will be an outstanding one!
SCORPIO October 22 – November 21
As one of the Zodiac’s sexiest signs you are never far from the heart of a passionate relationship and this month is going to be no different. You have a wonderful chance to meet someone new at a forthcoming party and where it goes from there is anyone’s guess. However, knowing you Scorpions, it will evolve in exactly the way you want it to.
ARIES March 21 – April 20
You love being in love and for your sign the most exciting thing is the thrill of the chase and those first dates and “getting to know you” moments. Flowers, chocolates, dinner and discovery – that is the essence of your sign and no one does it better. This Valentine’s Day could be something special for you, so go out, enjoy yourself!
TAURUS April 21 – May 20 If there was ever a sign made for Valentine’s Day then yours is it, Taurus. Of course the fact that you are ruled by Venus does kind of help a little! Charming and charismatic, you may often be looked upon as the quiet guy or girl in the corner but there is no other sign capable of loving so completely. This Valentine’s Day is sure to be one of discovery and new experiences! GEMINI May 21 – June 20 Often seen as one of the more cerebral signs in the Zodiac, it can often be forgotten that you are able to woo as good as the best of them! This Valentine’s Day you are likely to come into contact with an old flame who is keen to rekindle passions from the past, but it may not be wise to revisit a relationship that didn’t end that well first time around.
SAGITTARIUS November 22 – December 21
It could be a bit of a mixed bag for your sign this month as a current relationship comes under strain due to the pressures of work. You are generally a keen romantic when the mood takes you but this year you are more likely to struggle with matters of the heart, in part perhaps because you remain unsure of the partnership you are currently in. Be honest with yourself and a loved one for everybody’s sake.
CAPRICORN December 22 – January 21
An old flame is going to make their way onto the scene this month and it could be exactly the right time for you to re-engage with a former partner that you may have unfinished business with. Of course you won’t all be looking for something new and those of you who are content in a current relationship will find good things to celebrate as well.

You are often seen as a romantic at heart and this is a fair description of most Cancerians, especially when Valentine’s Day comes around. The Old & Grumpy
GEG HOPKINS The old adage goes something like; ‘To cut a long story short – just don’t tell it!’ But senior citizens love to reminisce with the clichéd; ‘When I was a lad’, or; ‘As girls we use to….’ Unfortunately, most things old people come out with are now considered grossly politically incorrect.
148 February 2015
With communication between us predominantly in text form nowadays, it is a tad difficult for old timers to manipulate all this changing technology, but don’t underestimate us. It is our faculties that let us down, not our brains. Sure, we get slower to respond to things physically, but not mentally. Think about it; all that knowledge accumulated over the years is like a million gigabyte disk drive full of data. It just takes a little longer to access it and we only do a working week in our heads, with those in Europe under the impression that there’s no email delivery on Sundays. Sure, the body processor slows down a bit as well, but we all become lovable until you get on our nerves and the new bloated PC generation can certainly do that, so we rant and as we get older there is good reason to get grumpy. In my opinion, women generally get quieter as they reach their golden years with the rampant, wanton cougar in them diminished or at least diminishing. But there’s not an old man who hasn’t got a good lengthy yarn to spiel, true, false or somewhat embellished. Life’s experiences will do that to you, plus we all tend to get much less shy as we slow down and are quite happy to yap away to anyone who will listen as if the last day might be tomorrow. Alas, with everyone on their mobile phones texting, it is difficult to find an audience. Then again, even if we manage, it’s likely another older person, so all this new found desire to communicate is often fruitless because your new old friends can no longer hear you anyway. For the wrinkled, ‘let it all hang out’ takes on a new meaning verbally, particularly for blokes, but the proverbial mobile phone selfie is definitely not on the menu. Now, that’s not sexist in any way – moi sexist? Gossip is not a story and the reality is that unlike men, few women sit reminiscing and blathering tales of exploits at the best of times. As the years clock up, the fairer sex tend more to
‘tch tch’ as a disenchanted, ‘mature’ response rather than throw the blarney stone at you. Mind you, most had plenty to say while getting there. The fact is, so many married blokes have had to wait until they are over 65 to get a word in. So, verbal is the order of day because texting becomes impossible without a couple of glass pebbles over your eyes, LOL. Older readers might be ROTFL as they scan this missive, thinking how true. Only now, they will respond with ROTFLACGU! (Rolling on the floor laughing and can’t get up). BTW doesn’t mean ‘by the way’, it means; ‘bring the wheelchair’. LMAO is adapted to become LMDO. No, it doesn’t mean that either! To be precise, it means; ‘laughing my dentures out’. It is a whole new language and meaning we have to learn. ‘Talk to you later’ or TTL stays the same, but between old folk it means; ‘Talk to you louder’. But hey, men get so much more romantic after retirement and more imaginative, which is extremely odd because most marriages go through phases where either party would be quite happy if they could literally get away with murder; so the companionship grows more intense, or is that needy? Old couples see more beauty in each other, even if men still see more beauty in … um ... anything that moves in a skirt, tight T-shirt or pair of jeans. As mentioned, they come out of their shell and become bolder, believing they are more lovable, funny and forgivable, sitting there in retirement watching the world go by. Of course, they’ve not only lost the touch and ability, but any possibility of getting out of the chair fast enough, if in the extremely remote chance that some willing conquest happened to walk past the window. Old age is the déjà vu that you are having a bad attack of déjà vu. You’ve been there, done it, wrote the book and sent the postcard. So back to the grumpy insinuation and stereotyping an entire generation of anyone with a liver spot; let’s make this perfectly clear and with some glee. Disregard, dismiss or just dis the old codger’s outpourings as just another pathetic rant at your peril, for each is a masterpiece of experience. To do so is actually offensive in its essence, rather than the content of old folk’s outpourings. This hypocrisy is not perceived by the now widespread, ultra-orthodox, politically correct, deluded, confused or just oblivious among us, wallowing in their misguided appeasement. Calling us old folk ‘out of touch’ or, even worse, accusing us of being ‘offensive’ because we tell it like it is, is outrageous. Just back off! Furthermore, I’ll worry about my own health and safety, not you! The best part about it is; being an old git with probably only a few years left on Earth, (a debatable, contentious statement in itself) you don’t care what you say anymore, so my next rant will address the pseudo majority Illuminati who these days instantly object to anything and everything. www.bahrainthismonth.com
