Welcome to the first edition of 2017 and we wish you, and all our readers, a very happy and healthy New Year. With the festive season, finally, behind us, things have quietened down a little giving us the opportunity to enjoy the island’s balmy winter weather. However, January still has plenty to do and, as always, we have all the details. The much anticipated Bahrain Shopping Festival returns for a month from January 19. Details were still being finalised as we went to press but we can say, for sure, there will be some great bargains to be had at participating malls and retail outlets – keep an eye on our social media for further information as it’s released. And still on the shopping front, it’s also time for the annual Autumn Fair which sees 750 stalls take over the exhibition centre from January 25 to February 2. Another annual event making a triumphant return is French Week and, this year, as well as artists and musicians, we’re getting a visit from celebrity shoe designer Christian Louboutin, which has hearts fluttering among the ladies in our office. An event that’s coming up next month is the Bahrain International Garden Show and, in our interview section, Shaikha Maram bint Isa Al Khalifa, Secretary General of the National Initiative of Agricultural Development, tells us what to expect. We also chat to Pakistani Ambassador, His Excellency Javed Malik about the expanding commercial and cultural links between his country and the Kingdom. In his first interview as CEO, the new man at the helm of the Gulf Hotels Group, Garfield Jones, looks back on 20 years of developments and tells us what the future holds and, staying with the tourism sector, Mohamed Buzizi, of international group Skal, outlines what’s needed to encourage more visitors to the island. In the Motoring section, we talk to Trevor Fletcher who has recently taken over at McLaren and has big plans for promoting the supercars with events and an owners’ club. And in dining, we check out the new Japanese tasting menus at Imari, which offers food with a view. There’s also the regular round-up of great gadgets, movies and more. So, however you choose to welcome the New Year, make sure to take us with you for “your guide to a great way of life”.

200 YEARS OF BRITISH-BAHRAINI RELATIONS When? Ongoing- April 30 Event? Exhibition Venue? Bahrain National Museum The rise of piracy in the Arabian Sea in the 18th and 19th centuries resulted in a time of unrest that challenged prosperity and regional trade enterprise. In 1816, a friendly agreement between the British representatives in the Gulf and the shaikhs of Bahrain secured the protection of shared interests. The agreement was formalised in 1820 with the signing of a General Treaty of Peace that ushered a new episode in the political and cultural history of both nations. Over the past 200 years, the nature of the British-Bahraini relationship has evolved and the ties between the two nations have been strengthened. Above all, this relationship was shaped by varied explorations, encounters and personal stories. This exhibition draws on the first explorations of Bahrain and its archaeological landscape. It celebrates a few of those who have played a major role in bringing global attention to Bahrain. By shifting the focus from artefacts to people and their documented encounters with local Bahrainis, the expo attempt to shed light on different perspectives of the bicentenary-long British-Bahraini relationship. The exhibition is organised in collaboration with the British Council in Bahrain. Call 17 298-714. 22 January 2017

spotlight Robin Tham being interviewed on web radio in Australia

Longevitology Energy Therapy GEORGE F MIDDLETON “There are more things in heaven and earth, Horatio, than are dreamt of in your philosophy”; so says Shakespeare and so proves Longevitology practitioner, Robin Tham, who, together with his wife Helena, visits Bahrain at the beginning of February 2017 and, during their stay, plans to showcase the practice of related meditation techniques.

To access web links and testimonials for this article, please scan this code.

38 January 2017

The Chinese call it “ch’i”, the Japanese call it “ki”, Indian yogis refer to it as “prana”, using it in their process of attaining higher states of consciousness through yoga and meditation. Over the centuries, many different cultures and civilisations have incorporated this same universal energy (UE) force into various healing art disciplines, including acupuncture, hands on healing, distance healing, martial arts and prayer. The method used to channel UE to an individual requiring treatment is through the laying-on of hands. Humans, animals and plants can all benefit from this healing energy. Although modalities may vary in terms of concept, theory, technique and ideology, we focus in this article on the practice of Longevitology, since, at the beginning of February 2017, Robin and Helena Tham, who are qualified practitioners of Longevitology in both Canada and Australia, will be visiting us in Bahrain. During their time here, Robin and Helena intend to meet with individuals who have an interest in or a need for the energy-based therapies that this type of meditation offers. Robin, a retired mechanical engineer, previously worked for Atomic Energy of

Canada Limited (AECL) and later for Spar Aerospace, which was the Canadian arm of NASA’s space shuttle and ISS (International Space Station) programmes. Subsequently, on his arrival in Australia, he worked on the manufacture of composite components for the fifth generation fighter jet, F-35 Lightning II. Dr Helena Tham, a PhD in holistic nutrition, is also a graduate electrical engineer. She has spent many years promoting wellness through various disciplines. Robin describes The Longevitology Benevolent Foundation as a non-profit organisation founded in Taiwan in 1993 by Dr Tom Lin. Its goal, according to its website, is to train individuals to reach out with loving hands to help others suffering from pain, illness and distress free of charge by means of Longevitology Energy Therapy. Since its inception, founding members Master Lin Tzu-Chen and Master Wei Yu-Feng have travelled the world annually to teach Longevitology. The course consists of three training segments – beginner, intermediate and advanced – which are held in the evenings and/or at the weekend. Robin states: “Attending the classes, students will have their chakras opened. They are then able to improve their health via meditation and self-healing exercises and will also be able to apply these techniques to improve the health of others. There is a chance that Bahrain may receive a visit from the founding members some time in 2018 if sufficient demand for the classes is generated.” While western science and culture, for the most part, seem to dismiss the concept of UE healing as a viable treatment for suffering individuals, noted Stanford physicist, Professor Emeritus Dr William Tiller, and various associates, have spent much of the past 20 years gathering scientific evidence that human thought and spirituality can have a measurable

www.bahrainthismonth.com

impact on the physical world. Independent studies at Princeton University also suggest that thoughts affect subtle energies (energies believed to exist outside the electromagnetic spectrum and operating in a domain where only very sensitive and advanced scientific instruments are able to detect them). There are thousands of testimonials which promulgate the fact that UE healing therapies, used either independently or as an adjunct to conventional medical treatment, offer a valid and effective way for patients to regain their health and wellness. One such Longevitology testimony, by Glyn Ashley, a former resident of Bahrain who was treated by Robin and Helena, can be found on our web app (www.bahrainthismonth.com) or via the QR code at the bottom of the facing page. Robin states: “On retirement, I spent about a year playing golf almost every day, until I realised that I needed a more fulfilling way to spend my time.” It was then that Robin decided to follow his wife, Helena, who had undergone a Longevitology class in Canada, and they both began volunteering with the local centre established in Perth, Western Australia. “As well as treating people for their physical and emotional ailments and diseases, volunteers at the centre provide energy meditation therapy sessions for people who need to enhance their energy systems in order to improve their overall level of health and wellness,” says Robin. Longevitology, ‘chang sen xue’ in Chinese (‘the study of long life’) translates into English as “the study of maintaining health – mentally, physically and spiritually,” according to Robin. “It’s an energy health therapy system which seeks to direct the flow of UE into the body to activate cells and improve the body’s metabolism rate in order to expel toxins from it, thereby allowing the body to heal itself naturally.” He continues: “Our practitioners are all volunteers and do not derive any income from giving energy therapy sessions, nor from selling any related products or services. Longevitology is not a business; nothing is bought or sold. It is not a religion and it has no political aspirations. Furthermore, there is never any fee charged for the healing adjustments provided.” The process is easy to learn – effective and noble in its nature. The general theory of health underlying Longevitology is the same as in other forms of Asian medicine, i.e. good health is the result of energy (referred to as ch’i) which ensures that blood flows smoothly through the organ systems of the body; poor health may be experienced when the flow of ch’i is disrupted. When proper energy flow is restored, conditions are optimised for the body to heal itself. According to Robin and Helena: “The human body lives in a rich field of universal yin and yang energy. Just as a healthy body draws oxygen into the lungs to breathe, it also draws in UE to replenish itself. It does so through specific points on the body known as chakras which, in essence, are the body’s power centres, energising cells and organs so they can function efficiently. Each chakra www.bahrainthismonth.com

Longevitology classes in Singapore

governs the functioning of a different organ system. When all chakras are operating effectively, the metabolism and the immune system should function efficiently; waste and toxins should be easily discharged.” Robin says that people who have received Longevitology treatment have indicated significant improvements to their health, including: increased calmness; reduced stress; pain relief; deeper and restful sleep; increased energy; relief from headaches, migraines, tension and back pain; increased mental alertness; faster healing process from injuries and postsurgical operations; shrinking of tumours; reduction of illness discomfort; and generally a significant improvement in their quality of life. He continues, “It is important to say that the energy adjustments in Longevitology are not a substitute for conventional medical care. By restoring energy balance, they help facilitate the body’s ability to heal itself in association with regular healthcare.” Robin concludes: “It is my belief that the state of our mind affects our health, and changes in our mindset can alter our destiny. We must have peace and love in our mind and heart to maintain true health and happiness. By opening up our mind, this enhanced energy flows easily and effectively to improve the body’s metabolism by balancing the wellness of body, mind and spirit in holistic harmony. All you need to make it work is a pair of hands and a heart full of compassion.” N.B. If you would like to learn more about Longevitology or make an appointment to see Robin and Helena when they visit Bahrain, please use the QR code to access web links and testimonials or email robintham@gmail.com. INTERVIEWS

TO A GREENER TOMORROW BEHNAZ SANJANA

Secretary General of the National Initiative of Agricultural Development, Shaikha Maram bint Isa Al Khalifa, talks about the vital role that the much anticipated Bahrain International Garden Show plays in the Kingdom.

ALSO THIS MONTH: 43 HE JAVED MALIK, PAKISTAN AMBASSADOR 45 GULF GOING GLOBAL

W

hen Her Royal Highness Princess Sabeeka bint Ibrahim Al Khalifa, wife of His Majesty the King of Bahrain and President of the Supreme Council for Women, opened the annual Flower and Vegetable Show organised by the Bahrain Garden Club in 2003, she felt the need for a more inclusive platform to preserve and promote the country’s natural flora. “She proposed to create a new event that would have the annual open flower and vegetable competition as its cornerstone. It would serve to raise awareness amongst garden lovers and enable the general public to access regional and international suppliers of goods and services pertaining to agriculture and gardening. Thus was born the Bahrain International Garden Show [BIGS] in 2004 under this new vision,” says Shaikha Maram. BIGS functions under the aegis of the National Initiative of Agricultural Development (NIAD). “The commercial and educational aspects of the exhibition play a big role in generating interest and knowledge and essentially creating a movement towards improving agriculture and greenery in the country at multiple levels. It reinforces NIAD’s efforts to educate native youth about the possibility of taking up agriculture, landscaping and related fields as a profitable vocation,” she says. BIGS has grown over the years and has brought about progress in the Kingdom’s economy by being a catalyst for new www.bahrainthismonth.com

companies to come into being. Shaikha Maram continues: “I feel this event has planted the seeds for agricultural companies to grow and thrive here. There are three noteworthy local companies that have earned a name for themselves. Peninsula Farms, which launched at the garden show, has fantastic produce at major supermarkets today, grown here in the middle of the desert, which is a commendable achievement. Hanging Gardens grows roses besides other fresh produce like strawberries; something which is not deemed easy in our region. Tasneem Agricultural Development is a family entity that grows produce and also has a farm that is visited by students to give them firsthand experience of farming and agriculture.” She also says that, through the garden show, people have come forth with ideas and projects for the betterment of society, new businesses have taken wing and creativity and innovation in the field of agriculture is advancing. This year’s theme for BIGS is ‘compact gardens in an urban setting’. “We feel that with modern development and urbanisation, people do not have space, time and expertise to maintain a full-scale garden. We are going to showcase examples that are simple to follow, so people can shed their inhibitions towards gardening in a small yard area or even balconies and window boxes. We want to show how container gardens or raised-bed farming is possible even in a concreted space. We hope

Shaikha Maram bint Isa Al Khalifa

people will be inspired to beautify their spaces with plants, no matter how limited the area.” The show will be held from February 23-26, 2017 at the Bahrain International Exhibition & Convention Centre and is set to have a good mix of exhibitors and experts to pique the interest of professionals and hobbyists as well as school children. Visitors can expect the usual three zones at BIGS. “The Market Zone is a hall full of commercial companies that exhibit and sell agricultural goods and services. The Awareness Zone comprises academic, official as well as non-governmental organisations that help us spread relevant awareness to the public. Landscaping services are presented at the Design Zone, where exhibitors create attractive stands to show builders, homeowners or potential home buyers how they can beautify their outdoors,” says Shaikha Maram. Being instrumental in attracting foreign investment to Bahrain, reducing its food imports and encouraging a greener planet, this event will continue growing from strength to strength in the future. interview

TAKING BILATERAL RELATIONS TO NEW HEIGHTS LIZ O’REILLY His Excellency Javed Malik, Pakistani Ambassador, talks trade, culture, fashion and a very special friendship.

I

n post for 10 months now, the new ambassador is feeling very at home in Bahrain, but that’s no surprise. He is no stranger to our shores nor to the region in general having previously been based in Dubai as the Pakistani Prime Minister’s Special Envoy for Investment and Trade in the Gulf. He also visited Bahrain in 2015 as part of a delegation accompanying Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif and says: “I had the honour to meet His Majesty King Hamad, the Crown Prince and, of course, the Prime Minister. And now, since being appointed ambassador, I am pleasantly taken with the island and have a lot of affection for Bahrain and its friendly, hospitable people. I have got to know a lot of people very quickly and it feels as if I have been here for a much longer time.” With one of his main focuses being on expanding economic ties and enhancing the business and commerce between the two nations, His Excellency and the embassy organised the first Pakistan Bahrain Business Opportunities Conference, which had high-level participation from both governments and attracted more than 500 delegates. He explains: “There were three sessions: one was co-chaired by HE Zayed Alzayani, Bahrain Minister of Industry, Commerce and Tourism, and HE Khurram Dastagir Khan the Pakistani Minister – which indicates the importance our two governments place on this issue; a business to business session was led by the Chambers of Commerce of Bahrain and Pakistan; and the third was a joint session by the Pakistan Bahrain Business Council, which has been rejuvenated. “The focus was to identify opportunities for the two countries to expand their economic ties with the aim to boost investment and trade. Approximately 200 businessmen came from Pakistan and the Gulf region and I believe many of them discovered that Bahrain could be a gateway to reach out to the wider region. Similarly it showcased ample opportunities for Bahraini investment into Pakistan, particularly in www.bahrainthismonth.com

His Excellency Javed Malik

the area of food security. Pakistan is known as a food basket and, given its proximity to Bahrain, it could supply all the country’s needs very easily.” His Excellency adds that the balance of trade between the two countries does not do justice to the potential, and can easily be doubled with the right strategy. The business opportunities conference is set to be an annual event, with the 2017 edition to be held in Pakistan, and both HE Zayed Alzayani and Khalid Almoayed, of the Bahrain Chamber of Commerce, have been invited to attend. Another area of development which the ambassador believes Bahrain can benefit from is the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor, which is a collection of projects currently under construction at a cost of USD51 billion to facilitate trade along an overland route connecting Kashgar, in China, and Gwadar, in Pakistan, through the construction of a network of highways, railways, and pipelines. The development was highlighted during the recent visit of Pakistani Foreign Minister Sartaj Aziz, who was in Bahrain to attend the Manama Dialogue and also conducted a series of highlevel meetings. Aside from the commercial aspects of the relationship, His Excellency has also been busy breathing new life into arts and cultural

exchanges. He says: “I feel that there needs to be a creative dialogue between the talented individuals in our two countries – artists, musicians, fashion designers – and we have had positive meetings with Shaikha Mai and Shaikha Hala to work on the concept of an initiative I have called ‘The Art of Friendship’.” Under this banner there are plans to showcase a Pakistani film festival, a fashion week and to continue promoting Pakistani music – there have already been a number of musical events since His Excellency has been in post. He adds: “I would like to conclude by saying that in view of the growing relationship between Bahrain and Pakistan, the Pakistani community celebrated a renewed sense of friendship with more than 12 events for Bahrain National Day. This shows the depth of the relationship and is also a tribute in celebrating the leadership of His Majesty King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa.” His Excellency expressed his special appreciation for His Majesty King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa, the Crown Prince and the Prime Minister saying: “His Majesty and their Royal Highnesses’ guidance and gracious support in welcoming our initiatives has been instrumental and I would like to expresses my deepest appreciation to the rulers and government of Bahrain.” January 2017 43

interview

WORLDWIDE TOURISM NETWORK PUJA TIWARI Mohamed Buzizi is president of the Bahrain chapter of a global tourism association which aims to fortify and assist the industry. He tells us about the significance and achievements of Skal in the Kingdom.

Mohamed Buzizi

P

romoting tourism and facilitating friendly business exchanges worldwide, Skal is an international association with nearly 500 clubs active in 85 countries. It is the only such body that unites all branches of travel and tourism, and members meet at congresses to discuss and pursue topics of common interest. “The club plays an active role in developing tourism for Bahrain, in particular by fostering contacts between hoteliers, airlines and travel agents, and other associates,” explains Mohamed. “The activities focus on building links and fostering goodwill between travel and related industries, bringing people together, introducing newcomers and welcoming visitors.” The local branch was formed on October 28, 1972, when 44 individuals representing the travel and hotel businesses in Bahrain decided to join forces. Now there are over 75 active members. With government announcing various initiatives to encourage tourism, Mohamed 44 January 2017

believes these efforts need to be consistent for results to show. He says: “Any campaign to promote Bahrain is good, but it should be continued and not advertised like a fad. People need to be constantly reminded, to ensure that it sets in the minds of the target audience, because it is easy to forget.” He also believes recent changes to the Kingdom’s visa requirements will help draw in more footfall, saying: “The prices of hotels here are far cheaper compared to other GCC countries and we have plenty of attractive tour packages available. This is sure to bring in more people from around the region.” With the island gaining momentum as a meetings, incentives, conferences and exhibitions (MICE) destination, he says the announcement of construction of a new exhibition centre will greatly benefit the country. “Having a larger space means more people can be accommodated. Once the project has started, a proper campaign should be set in

motion to get the word out. It needs to start in advance, after groundbreaking, so we can bring in clients for the centre,” he says. He further addresses the matter, adding: “Bahrain has all the facilities to be a great MICE destination, we just need to develop it. I think the way to go is to establish a strong relationship with the interested parties, create a programme for their delegates, give them attractive rates on airfares and waive visa fees. Competition is severe. Unless there is an advantage for them, we will not be on their favourite list. To start with, we might have to sacrifice a bit, but when we build a reputation, we can demand more.” As for Skal’s next event, members are currently preparing to host the Asian Area Congress in May 2017. “It is aimed at educating the attendees about exciting leisure and business opportunities in Bahrain, to network and to bolster tourism ties between countries,” explains Mohamed. www.bahrainthismonth.com

interview

GULF GOING GLOBAL LIZ O’REILLY In his first interview since his appointment as CEO, Garfield Jones, of the Gulf Hotels Group (GHG), chats about life in the hospitality industry and plans for the Bahrain-born company’s future growth.

W

hen we met, Welshman Garfield had just celebrated 21 years with the Kingdom’s only fully Bahraini five-star hotel group. He came to the property as food and beverage manager intending to stay two years but, as for so many of us, the island worked its magic and after two decades he has been appointed the Gulf Hotels Group’s first non-Bahraini chief executive. He says: “I had been working in Nigeria for four years before and wanted to do something different. My initial contract was for two years but you get into the fabric of what Bahrain is and realise it’s a great place to live. My kids were very happy at their school and I was happy in my job, so we stayed. “When I came there was just Gulf Brands, which was Gulf Cellar, the hotel, the Awal Ballroom and four restaurants; things have changed a lot since then!” Of those major changes, he adds: “I honestly can’t remember everything but Gulf Brands is certainly a lot bigger than it was then, the hotel now has 10 restaurants, we’ve added the Gulf Convention Centre and an apartment block [Gulf Executive Residence] and a 3,000-squaremetre spa. “From the group’s point of view we’ve also www.bahrainthismonth.com

Garfield Jones

added the executive offices and a 2,500-squaremetre commercial laundry. We then started working on management contracts, taking on the Ocean Resort in Zanzibar, the K Hotel and, more recently, the Asdal Gulf Inn and the Gulf Residence, Amwaj. “We also recently completed the acquisition of Bahrain Tourism Company, which owns the Crowne Plaza Bahrain – which is currently managed by InterContinental Hotels Group – and a 30 per cent stake in Bahrain Family Leisure Group which operates restaurants such as Cucina Italiana and Bennigan’s. “Now that I look at it, that’s pretty much one addition or acquisition for each year I’ve been here!” In 2012 Garfield took a short break from the business, travelling with wife Jill to Australia, as the couple welcomed their youngest daughter but his absence from a career he loves was never intended to be permanent. He explains: “There are so many people that opt for a career they don’t enjoy and going to work becomes a real bugbear. The main thing is to enjoy what you do so there’s never a day when you don’t want to go to work; that, to me, is better than any individual achievement and, when you have that, why would you look for something else?”

However, he does admit that balancing home and work life, particularly in the 24/7 hospitality industry, can be a challenge and stresses this is something he has always had to work at to ensure he makes time for his family. Of his appointment, Garfield is both thankful and honoured, saying: “It is a tremendous honour to follow on from people of the calibre of Mohamed Buzizi and Aqeel Raees. I believe that when the board considered the next CEO to follow on from such iconic leaders they considered continuity and stability as major factors and I will work hard to justify that faith.” For the future he says the group is looking to continue expansion. It has purchased the site of the former Block 338 restaurant in Adliya, which will be developed into four venues, including a rooftop terrace. A further Gulf Residence is scheduled to open in Juffair in 2018; there is a five-star hotel property under construction in Dubai at Business Bay; and GHG is looking at Saudi Arabia and the wider world market for both its restaurant and hotel brands. He concludes: “I think everyone is looking at diversifying revenue streams so it’s important for us to look at expansion across the regional market and beyond.” January 2017 45

interview Yasser Baha

HOSPITALITY IN FOCUS PUJA TIWARI

Y

From vibrant food festivals to luxurious accommodation, seasoned hotelier Yasser Baha tells us more about this elegant property in the heart of Seef district.

asser Baha, general manager of Mercure Grand Hotel, is the man who runs the show behind the scenes. A holder of a degree in International Hotel Management, his journey with Accor Hotels began in 1994. “I started out as an outlets manager in Sofitel Le Sphinx in Cairo, getting promoted to night manager and eventually moving onto being the regional sales manager for the chain in Egypt, he says. “Besides that, I have also worked with other renowned chains, such as Mövenpick, Helnan International, Safir and Club Med.” He was appointed as general manager of Mercure Grand in May 2012 and explains: “When I moved to Bahrain, I already had 25 years of experience in hospitality at hand, so my aim was to uniquely position the property to its target clientele.” Being in an ever-changing industry indicates that new challenges need tackling every so often. Yasser explains how he deals with them: 46 January 2017

“You can overcome any obstacles when you are surrounded by the right people. I do my best to make sure that we have the right talent in the team. “Emphasis is laid on being friendly, cordial, energetic, understanding the local culture and being knowledgeable about the industry.” He believes the single most imperative quality his employees can possess is curiosity. “The only way one can move forward is by taking interest and being curious, so they can learn and grow,” he says. “People need to be curious outside of their own teams. We always encourage staff to see how other departments work and learn how to work with them.” Mercure Grand has grown tremendously over the years, becoming one of Seef District’s most iconic properties, which can be merited to Yasser’s introduction of lucrative events. “Our Egyptian Friday Brunch in Neyran Restaurant witnesses a full house every weekend, and Casa Lounge has a new duo of

singers to keep guests entertained,” he says. However, the annual Turkish Festival is the crowning glory of the calendar at the hotel. “On January 27 we will host our annual Turkish Festival, which will showcase the culmination of a whole year’s worth of hard work. Various folk dancers and chefs are flown in especially for the event, and it is attended by the Turkish Ambassador and his delegation,” says the GM. “I would like to extend my sincere appreciation to the general manager of Turkish Airlines in Bahrain, Mehmet Can Tasci, for the airline’s support through the years.” Having undergone recent renovation of its rooms, the property is one of the few all-suite hotels in the market. “Mercure is a brand with personality committed to quality, serving business and leisure segments. The amazing feature of the property also lies in its location, surrounded by five major malls and a popular restaurant area with easy access to the highway,” concludes Yasser. www.bahrainthismonth.com

GEARING UP FOR 2017 There’s a new face at the helm of this iconic brand in Bahrain following an impressive revamp. Trevor Fletcher chats with BTM about the company’s ambitious plans for 2017.

B

ritish supercar manufacturer McLaren, partly owned by Bahrain’s Mumtalakat Holding Company, is starting the new year with aplomb following a shift in local partnership. Kanoo Motors has replaced Saudi-based Al Ghassan Motors as the Kingdom’s McLaren official retailer and it’s all change on the agenda. The current showroom is located at Moda Mall but Kanoo Motors is in the process of building an impressive state-of-the-art showroom – located alongside the existing dedicated aftersales facility in Tubli. “Any good business is built on a solid product and impeccable customer service,” Trevor explains. “Our focus is on giving consumers what they deserve – a credible aftersales facility – because, when you buy a supercar like McLaren, you expect peace of mind that your investment is going to be looked after.” And investment is not a term McLaren takes lightly. The Bahrain overhaul follows a staggering one billion British pound investment (BD463,127,105) made by the company to produce more cars and www.bahrainthismonth.com

more derivatives of existing models. This is something Trevor is particularly excited about. “This job is very, very exciting – especially to be a part of the growth strategy. McLaren has always been known as a supercar brand for highend net worth individuals. With the introduction of the Sport Series the brand is now more accessible to a wider audience. The range of vehicles available includes the Sports Series and Super Series models, such as the groundbreaking McLaren 570S and GT along with the 650S and 675LT Spider, which incorporates a range of Formula 1 technologies, such as the carbon fibre MonoCell, active aerodynamics and the state-of-the-art ProActive Chassis Control, providing the ultimate control on both road and track. “McLaren has a plan called ‘Track 22’,” Trevor explains. “By the year 2022, the company expects to complete its objectives, and a key element is introducing new potential customers to the brand. Derivatives of the 570 include a coupe and a GT and 2017 will see the launch of a Spyder version with a retractable hardtop.”

Married father of four, Trevor has 25 years of experience in the motoring industry and his career has seen him travel across the UK and the Middle East. He has settled in Bahrain with his family since 2013. The self-confessed pertrolhead says: “This is a dream appointment for me because, at any point of any automotive career, I think you would want to get to the stage of dealing with some form of supercar. “I am honoured to be part of McLaren, and I think, as a company, we are privileged to hold this marque. When you compare where the brand has come from to what we are doing with it – it will blow you away.” This year will see Bahrain International Circuit (BIC) play an integral part in the company’s plans. Trevor explains: “McLaren has a rich racing heritage and is very much at home on the track. We have a number of special events planned at the BIC for existing and potential customers and are also looking into starting an owners’ club, to give our customers the chance to network and, of course, share their love for cars.” January 2017 51

fter a long, hard week at work there’s nothing better than an evening out with friends. The island has a number of nightlight hotspots but The Domain is pulling out all the stops to win over even the most discerning visitors to its Imari Lounge. Imari is tastefully decorated with a minimalist theme running throughout. Every Thursday and Friday from 7pm to 11.30pm, it has a promotion that allows diners to sample a range of Japanese fare while relaxing with friends and enjoying upbeat tunes from the resident DJ. Menu A – priced at BD40++ – is ideal for two people and it features six different dishes and a bottle of selected beverage. Menu B – priced at BD50++ – is suitable for three people and features eight different dishes and a bottle of selected beverage. Menu C – priced at BD70++ – is enough for six people. It features eight different dishes and two bottles of selected beverage or 12 individual beverages. BTM was presented with a teaser of the www.bahrainthismonth.com

Menu A, which included edamame, prawn tempura, chicken bites, beef with enoki mushroom, deep-fried chicken, teriyaki chicken and cashew nut sushi rolls. The platter of light bites was presented well and everything looked quite good. It was a bit of a surprise to find the food is served cold, but it was enjoyable nonetheless. Apparently, according to the server, this is how these dishes are traditionally enjoyed in Japan. Staff were able to explain a little bit about each item, which made it easier to decide what to eat first. Another plus point was the open kitchen that allows guests to see the chefs preparing each meal. It’s fun to watch and also to see the attention to detail that goes into creating these tempting treats. One thing that is guaranteed at this venue is a breathtaking view of the Manama skyline. It’s easy to lose yourself while admiring the Kingdom’s intricacies in the tranquil surroundings of Imari Lounge – it’s well worth a visit. There is certainly no shortage of promotions

at this venue. There is a popular business lunch that runs from midday to 3pm Sunday through Friday with prices starting from BD6. If you fancy a change of pace, check out Txoko – a sky lounge crowning the top floor of The Domain Hotel and Spa. It’s the perfect place to network whilst sampling a variety of unexpected taste combinations from the classic cocktails menu. Txoko is a playful venue, a night haunt for Manama’s hip and cool set. DJs spin tunes, lights go down low and tables can move aside to make room for impromptu dancing. The Domain Hotel and Spa offers a total of eight restaurants and lounges. This is truly a destination for food culture – an electrifying collection, inspired by the seasons, by the best ingredients and by a host of chefs who are completely and utterly dedicated to their craft. In every restaurant, menus are built for sharing, seating arrangements are fluid and the atmosphere is always easy and playful. Call 16 000-000. January 2017 65

Oriental Ambrosia Welcome the New Year by treating your palate to an extraordinary set menu at this eminent Japanese restaurant. Savour an exquisite 10-course, fine-dining set menu this month prepared by a renowned, award-winning chef at Maki. “We have been doing extensive research into the most recent trends, exotic ingredients, and healthful global cuisine.” explains co-founder, agricultural and nutrition expert Amer Zeitoun. Throughout the past 14 years, Maki’s menu has evolved from the most original contemporary Japanese dishes created by Amer and his founding partner, older brother Mohamad (Oliver), to even more imaginative, contemporary fare that is centred on healthy eating. These include tasty, mouthwatering creations such as the Oliver Temaki, a crispy roll filled with salmon, brown rice, veggies, extra virgin olive oil capsules and chilli oil. They have also added a host of Akagome or red rice dishes. This move shifted the local market’s affinity to rice to the very healthful red variety which is packed with vitamins, minerals, fibre and antioxidants, not to mention delicious flavour. “Though I cannot divulge the whole menu yet, I can tell you that we will be introducing a very exotic red potato in the form of a dish called Okinawan Salad, with rare imported purple potatoes, served with our secret Asian spice dressing,” says Amer. Another delight, called the Lobster Green Bisque, will comprise the famed Canadian lobster with a special sauce. Call 17 522-733.

YaSalam! first debuted four years ago in Al Aali Shopping Complex, and then went on to establish its first branch in Dubai last year. The restaurant is characterised by funky, action-packed pop art featuring Middle Eastern elements that reflect its authentic core. With plenty of colour to lend an attractive vibe, it promises to be not just a feast for the taste buds but also for the senses. As for its new burger meals section, diners can enjoy an extensive selection of burgers catering to both meat eaters and vegetarians. The list of choices includes classics such as cheeseburgers and grilled chicken sandwiches, along with specials such as the YaSalam! double smoke burger, wild mushroom, and falafel burger. children can eat and play. dining CHOOX CHICKEN COOP

Finger Lickin’ Chicken

There’s a new eatery in town, set to be the buzzword in casual dining, that serves delicious chicken as you like it, but with a health-conscious approach. Choox Chicken Coop is a newly launched restaurant in Bahrain operating under The Comfort Food Company WLL, which is the food and beverage entity of Nova Group, a holding company that also has diversified business lines in the trading, construction and advertising sectors. The restaurant has recently flung its doors open to the public at the El Mercado Mall in Janabiya and offers a convenient, family-oriented dining option that is both, affordable and fun. If you are as much a fan of the ubiquitous chicken as the team behind this upscale eatery, then you are guaranteed to keep going back for more. A single bite into the crunchy, salty, juicy chicken served here is enough to make islanders queue up for a succulent plate every day of the week. If you can take your eyes off your meal, you will also appreciate the restaurant’s ambiance, which is akin to being on a farm right in the Wild West. What is unique about Choox Chicken Coop is that it’s not a run-of-the-mill fast food outlet. It is a concept that even 70 January 2017

health conscious foodies can enjoy, guiltfree. All the fare served at the restaurant is made using clean, organic chicken. However guests choose to have their meal – fried, grilled or prepared on the rotisserie – they can be assured of the freshest, best quality ingredients. If you are in the mood for some crispy fried chicken, you need not worry too much, as your poultry will be fried in peanut oil, which is better than other oils, and is also heart-healthy. So whether you are on a diet or not, Choox Chicken Coop is a one-of-a-kind place for chicken lovers where they have the opportunity to taste a variety of wholesome chicken options. The restaurant is focused on adding a fresh zing to the menu by giving customers in Bahrain something new to look forward to regularly. It aims for people to connect with the brand as soon as they think about a quick, casual yet healthful meal, and to have a loyal cult following on the island. The restaurant is already seeing success in reaching out to a significant customer base, thanks to its aromatic, simple, but satiating preparations accompanied with warm and friendly service. The Golden Tulip Hotel has offered that for decades but what makes a visit to its ‘Friday Brunch’ or ‘Seafood Night’ special is the chance to win genuine natural Bahraini pearls! Metallica – Hardwired … to Self-Destruct What’s the story?

This is the 10th studio album by American heavy metal gods Metallica, and their first double-album (although this comes across as a marketing ploy given that it would fit onto one disc). It is their first album in eight years, following Death Magnetic, marking the longest gap between two studio albums in the band’s career. It is also their first release not to feature songwriting credits from lead guitarist Kirk Hammett since he joined the band in 1983. In 2014, Hammett had lost his phone at Copenhagen airport, which contained almost 250 riff ideas. Since Hammett did not back up the data, it affected his creative input for the new album so he left it to singer James Hetfield and drummer Lars Ulrich.

Worth a listen?

Hardwired is a thrashing and energised collection of songs that finds Hetfield leading

the charge with his monster riffing. In fact, it’s really Hetfield’s spirited performance that helps the album find its pulse, with his voice in particular sounding its most powerful and guttural since the late ‘80s. Inevitably, this is Metallica proving that they can still deliver the goods as the band members enter their 50s. The overall energy throughout the album is an emphatic answer, and they can still summon neck-breaking thrash as commanding as anyone else’s. Two highlights, the title-track Hardwired and the vicious, venomous Spit Out the Bone, bookend the album as opening and closing tracks. The first is a more concise, old school styled thrasher, while the lengthier features a melee of speed, power and aggression. Some songs could certainly have been shorter, but there is plenty to enjoy with homages and similarities to classics, plus

Verdict: A triumphant and brutal return. new licks and riffs to still sound fresh. This is their best album since the ‘90s, and a fine return to form.

Shorts

The Rolling Stones – Blue & Lonesome

The Stones’ first-ever all-blues album is the result of the band learning how to play in the unfamiliar surroundings of British Grove Studios. To ease into the new place, the Stones decided to knock out a version of Little Walter’s Blue and Lonesome and it sounded good enough to have the band decide to cut a few more covers, winding up with a full album of Chicago blues in a few days. The Stones haven’t worked at such swift speed in decades and much of the appeal of Blue & Lonesome lies in its casualness. It highlights how the Stones play together as a band, blending instinct and skill. It isn’t a showcase for virtuoso playing, but rather a groove record, emphasising feel and interplay while never losing sight of the song. 76 January 2017

John Legend – Darkness and Light Unlike John Legend’s first four proper studio albums, this one, his fifth, was produced almost entirely by one person. Legend recruited Blake Mills, who also plays several instruments and co-writes almost every song, and responds in kind here with a similarly vivid touch. Even at its most processed, the album sounds hand-wrought, a fully evolved synthesis of gospel, folk, R&B, and adult pop. The bulk of the songs are thematically similar nonetheless, with the embrace of an intense and long-term partnership at the centre.

Kate Bush – Before the Dawn When Kate Bush walked onto the stage at London’s Hammersmith Apollo theatre on August 26, 2014, it was the first time the gifted and reclusive artist had performed on-stage since 1979. To make up for lost time, Bush’s elaborate show included costume changes, actors, dancers, puppets, magicians, film projections and a loose narrative that turned the concert into a three-act stage production. This live album is a remarkable capturing of that grandiose event. Her vocals are splendid, and if she has a bit less control on-stage than in the studio, there’s a frisson that more than compensates, and this is a striking expression of her own glorious and playfully mad vision of the collision of humanity and nature.

Games review Game: Final Fantasy XV Rating: OOOOO Verdict: A brilliant, cute journey to the past. What is it?

The 15th main iteration in the world’s most popular role-playing game series. Final Fantasy XV is the story of a young king sworn to defend the last crystal in the world from the evil empire threatening his kingdom. It’s a fight between ancient and modern technology, and the struggle of one king to protect the old ways.

Gameplay:

The game is something of a radical departure for the series, with a full real-time battle system akin to hack ‘n’ slash rather than turn-based combat. There is a full open world to explore, littered with traditional Final Fantasy enemies that you can hunt, and a plethora of sidequests. This is a ‘road trip’ game, as main character Noctis and his three companions, Gladiolus, Ignis and Prompto, traverse the world in their regal car as they travel between quests and cities. Out in the field, Noctis can navigate across the terrain by jumping over small obstacles and sprinting for a limited time, and perform contextbased actions such as taking cover behind objects. Although everything is fluid, fans of the classic games will miss the more nuanced, tactical battle systems of old, while others will yearn for the days of linearity rather than a sparsely populated

Steep

Steep is an action sports game that takes players to the open world of the Alps and Alaska. The game offers a variety of sports, including skiing, wingsuiting, snowboarding and paragliding. The wild and massive mountain environment offers a wide range of activities and opportunities, allowing players to freely ride, compete and pull off crazy stunts. The game is online, too, so players can meet up with riders from all over the world and share their experiences with their friends.

world that leads to an incongruous relationship with the story.

Graphics:

The graphics are beyond criticism, as is the tradition with this series that always pushes the console’s capability to its absolute limit. From glistening wetlands to desert rock vistas to meticulously crafted city architecture, this is a feast for the eyes. The characters are brought to life with vivid detail and really allow the player to connect with them on an emotional level through their dialogue and banter. The only shortcoming in the graphics department is the distracting lip-syncing, a product of the game being originally made in Japanese and then translated.

Dead Rising 4

In the fourth game of the series, original protagonist Frank West is back in Willamette, Colorado, 16 years after the events of the original Dead Rising. A mysterious outbreak has overrun the Willamette Memorial Megaplex Mall and surrounding town with deadly predators… and Frank soon realises that what’s dead doesn’t always stay that way. Frank will face new undead enemies such as the Fresh, who exhibit superior speed and ferocity, and the Evo, who possess superior strength and mobility.

Super Mario Run

Super Mario Run is a side-scrolling, autorunner platformer game for mobile phones. The player controls Mario as he automatically runs from left to right, and must tap the touch screen to make Mario jump. Like other side-scrolling Super Mario games of old, the player must manoeuvre Mario over gaps, onto enemies and into coins to collect them. The end goal is for the player to safely get Mario through the level in the fastest time possible.

Simply put, it works brilliantly. It’s such a simple concept in essence, but not one that seems to have been employed often before. Occasionally emails have the writer’s signature stamped onto it, but this is the whole deal. Do you want your emails or letters to be more personal but easily editable and without having to rewrite it because you made a mistake? This website is perfect!

The Bad:

The main downfall is that you will need a printer and scanner for it to work, since these are the tools necessary to upload your writing into the system. Most offices have these thankfully, but for those that don’t, the app can prove an expensive purchase!

Film: Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them Rating: OOOO Directed by: David Yates Starring: Eddie Redmayne, Katherine Waterston, Colin Farrell

The Plot:

The year is 1926, and Newt Scamander has just completed a global excursion to find and document an extraordinary array of magical creatures. Arriving in New York for a brief stopover, he might have come and gone without incident were it not for a No-Maj (American for Muggle) named Jacob, a misplaced magical case, and the escape of some of Newt’s fantastic beasts – which could spell trouble for both the wizarding and No-Maj worlds.

Worth Watching?

If you’re expecting a continuation of the Harry Potter franchise, then you’ll be sorely disappointed. Outside of name-dropping a few familiar characters and spell names, this is an entirely independent story. Still, it’s a very fun adventure featuring some beautifully realised creatures and a briskly-paced plot that succeeds in creating a selfcontained movie but leaves enough strands open for more. Beware, though, that there are numerous scenes featuring dark content that may scare children, which starkly contrasts with the general lighthearted nature and the colourful cinematography palette.

apps

Apps Review BTM brings you the low-down on the latest and greatest apps on the market.

What is it?

In essence, Namoo is a beautifully designed app that helps young students explore the basics of plant physiology through magnificent interactive graphics and descriptive text.

The Good:

The detail is fantastic, the illustrations are lush and the interactivity will mean kids won’t be bored by walls of text and diagrams. In each corner of the screen is an illustration of a different part of a plant – flower, leaf, root and trunk – and this acts as a visual menu for navigating to the meat of the app. Tapping the flower enlarges it and takes you to a section titled ‘From Flowers to Fruits’, while touching the leaf takes you to a page with four sections: Leaf, Leaf Anatomy, Plant Cell and Photosynthesis. Subjects under the root are Types of Roots and Root Tips, and under the trunk are Trunk and Stem.

App: Namoo – Wonders of Plant Life Rating: OOO Verdict: An educational, but, limited app. App: 1Password

Remembering a unique password for every app and service you use is a nearly impossible task. 1Password’s mobile app syncs with the desktop app to help keep your accounts safe by creating and storing a different secure password for all the services you use. All you have to remember is one password.

80 January 2017

The Bad:

Navigation in the app is forward only; you can’t go back to the previous screen (except by starting over), and the experience could be greatly improved by adding a back arrow. Another missing feature is suggestions for further reading for curious kids wanting to explore the natural world.

App: Waze

This navigation app lets users connect with fellow motorists in the area and get real-time updates on traffic and road conditions. For instance, if a user reports a traffic jam at a particular intersection, other users in the vicinity get notification about this. While Google Maps suggests the route with the shortest travel time, Waze is more specific and interactive with its information.

Protecting Your Pearly Whites Dr Akanksha Ostwal, periodontist and general dentist, explains the best way of preventing tooth loss and mobility.

Dr Akanksha Ostwal

Gum diseases, and more specifically periodontal diseases, are the leading cause of adult tooth loss. The mouth is a busy place, with millions of bacteria constantly on the move. While some are harmless, others can attack the teeth and gums. Harmful bacteria are contained in a colourless sticky film called plaque – the cause of gum disease. If not removed, plaque builds up on the teeth and ultimately irritates the gums and causes bleeding. In its earliest stage, your gums might swell and bleed easily. Bleeding is a signal that your mouth is unhealthy and needs attention. Left unchecked, bone and connective tissue – the supporting foundation of the tooth – are destroyed and teeth often become loose and may fall. The bottom line? If you want to keep your teeth, you must take care of your gums. The good news is that for most people gum disease is preventable. Attention to everyday oral hygiene, including brushing and flossing, coupled with professional cleanings at a dental clinic twice a year, could be all that’s needed to prevent gum disease — and actually reverse the early stage — helping you keep your teeth for a lifetime. Adding these habits to your daily routine can help: l Brushing after meals helps remove food debris and plaque trapped between your teeth and gums. Don’t forget to include your tongue; bacteria loves to hide there. 88 January 2017

l Flossing at least once a day helps remove food particles and plaque between teeth and along the gum-line that your toothbrush can’t quite reach. l Using a mouthwash can help reduce plaque and can remove remaining food particles that brushing and flossing missed. l Know your likelihood. Age, smoking, diet and genetics can all increase periodontal disease. If you are at increased risk, be sure to talk with your dental professional. Even if you do not notice any symptoms, you may still have some degree of gum disease. Some people have gum disease only around certain teeth, such as those at the back of the mouth, which they cannot see. A periodontist, a dentist who specialises in gum disease, can thoroughly check and recognise the progression of gum disease. An annual comprehensive periodontal evaluation from a dental professional looks at your teeth, plaque level, gums, bite, bone structure and other risk factors for periodontal disease. Identifying symptoms of gum disease early is key to protecting your teeth and gums for life. For further information email akanksha.ostwal@bsh. com.bh. Call 17 812-000. www.bahrainthismonth.com

GOLDEN TULIP BAHRAIN HOTEL

Behind the Banqueting Table Rasha Elarabi, guest relations and banquet manager, tells BTM about life at the sharp end of operations. I have been working with Golden Tulip Bahrain Hotel for four years now. I would consider the best part of my job to be dealing with guests of different nationalities, cultures and professions. Golden Tulip is famous for wedding events, especially because of the newly renovated Gilgamesh Ballroom and we’re also well known for outside catering services because of the quality of food. Perhaps the most challenging part of my job is dealing with difficult guests and working under pressure, meeting deadlines ahead of time and accommodating last-minute changes requested by guests and clients in terms of events and functions. As we all know, we cannot please everybody; we have to take into account people’s different moods and behaviour.

Banqueting is a busy area of the hotel and I am optimistic that a concrete development plan will come through the government’s push on tourism in the island, which, for sure, will benefit not only our property but the majority of the hotel industry. Outside of banqueting, we have various offers in the hotel. Our promotion of 20-percent discount for US Navy personnel, in-house guests and various other parties is still on during our Seafood Night and Friday Brunch. Also, there’s another promotion during Seafood Night and Friday Brunch which gives guests the chance to win a real Bahraini pearl by purchasing five oysters for BD1 and trying their luck to find a pearl inside. From January the popular Seafood Night will move from Wednesday to Thursday so guests have the chance to enjoy a later evening before the weekend. Call 17 535-000.

Get Soft Skin in Winter

With winter upon us, everyone dreams of having dewy skin that’s immune to the effects of cold temperatures, whipping winds and dry heating. Read on for some great tips. As the weather cools down, the air gets frigid and dry outside, and any kind of indoor heat leaves it even more parched. Your skin’s protective barrier cracks, making it less able to repair itself. It becomes a vicious cycle unless you do something to prevent it or treat it fast. Joz Salon & Spa brings you a guide, just in time, to protect your most moisture-starved parts so you can stay soft and smooth all season long. Smooth as you soothe Extra-dry skin, on the upper arms for example, can trigger a flare-up of keratosis pilaris, that annoying rough skin. Try a lotion with salicylic acid to exfoliate dead cells around your hair follicles and reduce the appearance of bumps. Handle with care To prevent chapping parched hands, 90 January 2017

embrace wipe-off, soap-free cleansers and alcohol-free hand sanitisers. They lead to less drying than washing repeatedly with soap and water. It’s the constant wetting and drying that really sucks the moisture out of your skin. When you do wash, choose a moisturising soap-free cleanser or a hydrating antibacterial gel, and then slather on lotion right away.

Layer up For arms, legs and torso, start with a rich bath oil or moisturising body cleanser – something that leaves a creamy film on your skin. It’ll brighten your skin, and your moisturiser can penetrate better if you don’t have a pile-up of dead cells. Pick super-gentle exfoliators when using for chest and back, like tiny, rounded polyethylene microbeads.

Glove up Anything that creates an occlusive barrier (ie traps moisture) on skin helps creams to soak in. So slip on some cotton gloves over lotion to help moisturise parched hands. Even wearing them for an hour can really soften up your skin.

Treat feet at night Before bed, for roughed-up feet, gently buff away calluses with a hydrating scrub or pumice stone, and apply a thick, buttery moisturiser while feet are still damp. When done rigorously for a month, the changes are magical.

Add honey To soften stubborn dry patches on rough elbows and knees, opt for a rich, hydrating scrub. You can use a simple mix of honey and sugar. Honey reduces inflammation, and sugar (applied locally) increases circulation in skin. This can be especially helpful in winter when blood flow is typically diverted from the skin to keep your core warm.

Keep showers short A long, hot bath or shower might seem tempting when you’ve been out in the cold, but it will strip your skin of moisture. If you like warm showers, keep them to no more than 10 minutes and not more than once a day. Call 17 369-133, 16 031-120 or 17 756-449. www.bahrainthismonth.com

All About the Knee Dr Ahmed Al-Hussainy, specialist orthopaedic surgeon at this hospital gives us vital information on a common but serious ligament injury.

Dr Ahmed Al-Hussainy

The anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) is an important internal stabiliser of the knee joint. ACL injuries occur when the ligament’s biomechanical limits are exceeded or over stretched. They most commonly happen during sports that involve sudden stops, jumping or changes in direction such as basketball, football, tennis, downhill skiing, volleyball and gymnastics. Other causes are landing from a jump incorrectly, receiving a direct blow to the knee or a collision, such as in a football tackle. When the ligament is damaged, there is usually a partial or complete tear across the tissue. A mild injury may overextend the ligament but leave it intact. Many people hear or feel a ‘pop’ in the knee when an ACL injury occurs. The knee may swell, feel unstable and become too painful to bear weight. The injury is accompanied by an inability to continue regular activity. It is important for first aid to be administered to reduce pain and swelling immediately after the injury. Following the RICE model of self-care at home is beneficial: l Rest. General rest to limit weight bearing is necessary for healing. l Ice. Whenever possible, the injured knee should be iced at least every two hours for 20 minutes at a time. l Compression. Wrap an elastic bandage or compression wrap around the joint. l Elevation. Lie down with the injured leg propped up on pillows. When the knee is injured, an X-ray may be needed 94 January 2017

to rule out a bone fracture. However, X-rays cannot visualise soft tissues, such as ligaments and tendons. An MRI (magnetic resonance imaging), which uses radio waves and a strong magnetic field to create images of both hard and soft tissues in the body, can show the extent of an ACL injury and signs of damage to other tissues in the knee. A doctor may recommend surgery for athletes who want to continue with their sporting activities, especially if the sport involves jumping or pivoting. Surgery is a prudent option in young and active patients who have injured more than one ligament or the cartilage in the knee and the injury causes the knee to buckle during everyday activities. During ACL reconstruction, the surgeon removes the damaged ligament and replaces it with a segment of tendon, which is tissue similar to a ligament that connects muscle to bone. This replacement tissue is called a graft. The doctor uses a piece of tendon from another part of the knee or sometimes from a deceased donor. The graft serves as scaffolding on which new ligament tissue can grow. Rehabilitative therapy is essential after surgery. Successful ACL reconstruction paired with rigorous rehabilitation can usually restore stability and function to the knee. Athletes often can return to their sports after six months. HILAL CONFERENCES AND EXHIBITIONS

Designed in the GCC

There will be a strong regional focus at the 2017 edition of the Kingdom’s major interiors exhibition. GulfInteriors exhibition 2017, the northern Gulf’s major annual event for luxury interiors, designs and furniture, takes place from April 25-27 under the patronage of HRH Prince Khalifa Bin Salman Al Khalifa, Prime Minister of Bahrain. The event will offer a dedicated platform to promote the GCC’s home-grown interior brands, according to organisers Hilal Conferences and Exhibitions (HCE). “The show will focus on the rapidly growing interiors industry in Bahrain by providing a B2B and B2C platform for architects, interior designers, manufacturers and dealers for their products and services originating in the GCC,” says HCE managing director Jubran Abdulrahman. Hempel Paints, Mobilia Uno, Fatima Alansari Design & Execution and Blue Zone are among those already confirmed to participate with the strategic sponsor being named as Hempel Paints, a global brand with manufacturing www.bahrainthismonth.com

facilities in Bahrain and Saudi Arabia. Mobilia Uno’s products, manufactured in Turkey, Italy, Portugal, China, Malaysia, Greece, India and Taiwan, are made to the designs of Mobilia Uno in Bahrain. “We will be showcasing our latest collection of designs of luxury furniture and accessories for the living area, bedroom, dining area and accessories such as chandeliers, carpets and mirrors,“says Mobilia Uno managing director Zahraa Haji. “The full collection will be on display at gulfInteriors and visitors at our stand will be given special offers on specific designs for orders placed during the show either at the exhibition or in our showroom in Tubli during gulfInteriors week.“ Fatima Alansari Design & Execution is a team of talented designers and architects based in Bahrain. With their focus on both the commercial and private sectors, exhibitors will be showcasing a range of interiors options from individual home décor schemes to office, restaurant and retail space options giving both businesses and

consumers the chance to find out what’s new in the market with up-to-the minute displays and sample statements. “Over the years we have seen an increasing number of the products coming to the exhibition under the mark ‘Made in the GCC’. The creative industry sector, which includes furnishings, materials and design, is a growing economic sector across the GCC. Excitingly, in Bahrain we are seeing a growing pool of creative talent in the interiors sector. We are committed to promoting home-grown talent at gulfInteriors exhibition, where visitors will see local manufacturers and designers alongside international brands,” says Jubran Abdulrahman. GulfInteriors takes place alongside two other major exhibitions – Gulf Construction Expo and Gulf Property Show, continuing the success of the only integrated B2B and B2C platforms for the construction, interiors and property sectors in the Northern Gulf. New Learning Centre Learning Plus in Saar is a newly launched UK curriculum tuition centre for English and mathematics offering classes from Year One to Year 11. Operated under licence from the Ministry for Private Education, the centre has been established by Simon McInroy, who arrived in Bahrain almost 18 years ago as a teacher at St Christopher’s School. Working in education for over 20 years, he holds bachelors and masters degrees in Education from the UK as well as the National Qualification for head teachers from the National College for School Leadership in London. His philosophy is simple – a more personalised approach equals a more impactful use of time. Students learn together in small, abilitybased groups. Whether a student is behind, doing OK or ahead of expectations for their age range, Learning Plus is about moving individuals forward by providing appropriate challenge levels and home tasks. Simon says: “People attend Learning Plus for a variety of reasons. Some come to try and help catch up with school expectations, while others want to get ahead or stay ahead. We also help people who are trying to make the switch to a UK curriculum school and have to meet certain standards. Others come because they enjoy the subject and enjoy being here. It all helps towards those subject grades.”

The company has stood out in its approach to the GCC – choosing to establish its regional headquarters in Bahrain and growing to be the country’s largest international law firm over this period. In the past 12 months, it has continued to grow with hires across all key divisions in Bahrain and Qatar and it currently employs four Bahraini lawyers marking a continuing commitment to recruiting the brightest and best Bahraini talent and providing an integrated blend of British and Bahraini lawyers to its clients. Patrick Gearon says: “I am very proud of our team in Bahrain which reflects and understands the culture in which we operate. We believe our Bahraini staff make us a better business through understanding our clients better, responding to their needs and developing our business in a manner which is in tune with the country in which we are headquartered. It also, we hope, sends a clear message to the market place that we are investing in Bahrain and that we are here, not just in Bahrain but the Gulf region, for the long term.”

BD40 Million Project Announced Seef Properties has launched a new company, LAMA Real Estate, to develop a major mixed-use project in Hamala, with an estimated investment of BD40 million. Seef Properties CEO, Ahmed Yusuf, says: “The main aim behind this unique project is to create a mixed-used development that can be positioned as a new shopping and leisure destination, providing unparalleled services for residents and visitors. “Work will commence by the second quarter of 2017 with an aim to finalise the project by the end of 2018. We are optimistic that this project will be an added-value to the Kingdom’s robust real estate sector and further support the vision of attracting investment. The Hamala project, once completed, will be a new, integrated destination attracting residents and tourists.”

First Stalled Project Sale

Spa Wins International Awards

In a first for Bahrain, incomplete development Juffair Views has been successfully auctioned off by Savills Northern Gulf (Bahrain Office), under the guidance of the Committee for Stalled Real Estate Projects. There was significant interest from potential buyers with about 30 people in the room for the sale with bids starting at BD3.5 million. Purchase was successfully concluded by Ramee Group with a bid of BD3.6 million. Donald Bradley FRICS, CEO Savills Northern Gulf, says: “Today was a culmination of a lot of hard work from the government, the Committee of Stalled Real Estate Projects and Savills. It has proven the committee’s determination to resolve this longstanding issue in the most transparent and professional way possible.” James Moore, director Bahrain, adds: “The successful auction goes to show that investors and developers still see Bahrain as an attractive place to invest and do business. It is certainly a positive step for the Bahrain real estate sector and the wider economy, and we hope that the sale of Juffair Views acts as a catalyst for other real estate projects in Bahrain.”

Since its launch in 2007 Al Areen Palace & Spa has successfully captured the hearts of the city’s residents and visitors. Its popularity was recently noted by the World Luxury Hotel Awards, which recognised the property with the Luxury Private Pool Villa Country Winner Award and the World’s Luxury Spa Award. “We are thrilled to see Al Areen Palace & Spa receive so much recognition in the last quarter of 2016, and the team is delighted to be recognised by these awards, adding to numerous awards and accolades received over the past few years,” says group general manager Pierre Vasseur. www.bahrainthismonth.com

CAPRICORN December 22 – January 21 If you’ve been feeling a little under the weather you might be surprised to discover that a change in your eating habits might provide you with the overall solution. It seems that some of you have an allergy, which has only now decided to make itself known. It may not be anything obvious, so go through your diet with a fine-toothed comb. Familywise, a gathering on the 12th will see a few sparks flying when you speak out of turn, so be prepared to swallow a piece of humble pie and say your apologies. AQUARIUS January 22 – February 20

ARIES March 21 – April 20 You’re going to need to be at your most financially ruthless when it comes to monetary negotiations this month if you want to extract the very best for yourself in a deal relating to work. If you can hold true to your beliefs then there is every indication that things will turn in your favour and quite spectacularly too! On the relationship front, a partner will be pressing you for greater commitment and you will have to decide exactly what you want from life. Good things are coming but how you meet them is up to you. Card of the Month — The Four of Wands

TAURUS April 21 – May 20 You may not be looking forward to the New Year as much as most; perhaps because a few of you are still getting over several disappointments from 2016. However, the good news is that January is set to be the starting point for better things to come. There could be a change of job on the horizon and this might even mean a change of locale as well. There is also the possibility that for those of you who are currently ‘unattached’ such a move might lead you down the road to a new relationship with some ‘interesting’ results. Card of the Month — The Devil

GEMINI May 21 – June 20 January is set to be a bit of an eye-opener for many of you with the harsh realisation that not all dreams do come true in life. Unfortunately, with the advent of another New Year that finds you in the exact same position as the last one, there is nowhere for you to hide and it would seem that your only choice is to accept matters and move on. Unless you do this, you could find that you are digging yourself into a hole from which you may never escape. Card of the Month — The Tower

January will have you delving deep into your pockets to meet the demands of an unexpected expense. An overindulgence at Christmas has left you a little short and this could see you having to dramatically tighten your belt. Nevertheless, it isn’t the end of the world and being frugal now will help clear any debts and put you on the right footing. A family member may come to you very upset around the 13th and your immediate reaction upon hearing their plight is to lose your temper. This isn’t going to solve anything so hold back if you can. Card of the Month — The Eight of Pentacles

PISCES February 21 – March 20 Some of you will need to prepare yourselves for difficult days and weeks ahead as low financial resources kick in. You are going to be pressed into some difficult decision-making and you will be cursing the reasoning behind certain actions taken last year. On the family front, you may not get as much sympathy from a loved one as you might have expected following the admission of your monetary plight. Help could be at hand from an unexpected source although the person concerned may only ‘bail you out’ if you are completely honest with them. Card of the Month — Judgement 102 January 2017

CANCER June 21 – July 20 Regret could well be the order of the day for you, Cancer, as you realise that a rash decision made in November last year was perhaps an incorrect one. As things have progressed, so you have come to miss the particular person you chose to turn your back upon. Fortunately, it is not too late to make amends – but don’t leave it too long otherwise any reconciliation will get harder and harder to make. You need to lighten up a little and surrender to the spontaneous for a change. You might find you even enjoy it! Card of the Month — Death

LEO July 21 – August 21 Love is fickle, hopping in and out of one’s heart with alarming disregard if it does not feel wanted by its owner, and so it is for many Leos this January. Questions will begin to rise within you over a relationship and whether what you have is what you really desire. The niggling doubts could have been there for some time and up until now you have been happy to ignore them. This is clearly an area that will need addressing sooner rather than later if you are to make progress in 2017. Card of the Month — The Knight of Wands www.bahrainthismonth.com

advertisers index VIRGO August 22 – September 21 January is set to be an interesting month for you, not least because there are significant developments in the workplace that will move in your favour before the 29th. You could see a greater level of responsibility come your way but there will be a financial reward attached to this, so long as you fight for your corner. On the home front there are likely to be positive sounds concerning any potential property purchase. However, act quickly because others are waiting in the

However, if you ensure any problem is checked out in January, you could prevent things getting worse later in the year. Primarily, you need to watch your weight. lastword GEG HOPKINS With much disdain from many quarters, this ‘blogarrhea’ clearly and confidently predicted throughout 2016 that The Donald would become President. It had nothing to do with support for Trump, rather the rumbling (as in caught) of the lying, conniving, fascist left, agenda swamped, mostly fake, totally out of control main-stream media, which so many millions blindly follow. That and a non-vodka drinking Russian mole mate who confirmed it was all ‘GO’ last summer. After all, Mr Putin is getting blamed for everything. Is he really so important? Well, if you can reach his pedestal you can ask him. Granted, it is pantomime season so expect anything, even unicorn sightings or white athletes breaking the world record for the 100 metres. In the case of the latter two examples, drugs would most certainly be involved. Bored yet? Oh get over it! There is another four years of good material to come and ‘Fakebook’ is in overdrive still as with the rest of the discredited media. No visible climb down from that lot yet, but as reported in last month’s column, let’s see if the utterly deluded big mouths carry out their pontificating chants of: “If Donald Trump gets in, I’m leaving for Canada!” OH CANADA! The land of unknown inventions, patronising excess as concern for others, while totally dismissing its own original white settlers. Will the UN send a force to protect you from Rosie and Co? You don’t deserve this; nonetheless you will open your doors with welcoming mittens! Canada is probably the nicest country in the world, next to everywhere else. Now we will see who really is lying. ‘The great showbiz escape!’ Those unhappy with Trump will surely dishonour their promises to move to Kanataka…..Sorry, Fart Free Canada. Barbra Streisand, Cher, Samuel L Jackson and even John Stewart say they’re off. What the hell did Canada do to deserve this? On the other hand; what does Canada ever do? Miley Cyrus, Whoopi Goldberg, Al Sharpton and the entire LGBTQ community (short for SLPBFT and Confused) have threatened to mince northward. America will rejoice if it no longer has the dystopian dyke and unfunny comedienne Rosie O’Donnell, who is indeed a product of this deluded hypocrisy. Take Russell Brand with you. Hopefully she will be medically checked at the border. They can test for anorexia, but results will come back negative. O’Donnell can mouth off and dish it out BIG TIME in what she thinks 104 January 2017

Old Man’s Rant are jokes, but when it comes back: “Oh you are so moronically offensive… blah blah blah.” It’s vile, no matter which end she expels it. Talk about global warming, Rosie’s flatulence causes black holes. If she ever does get to Canada, the Mounties won’t breathalyse suspect motorists; they’ll just show pictures of Rosie and ask if they find her attractive? Mind you, what a wonderful gesture – free up some US oxygen and end the baby oil shortage! How can we put it? Canada is a great place – for year-round winter sport. Christmas trees are replaced in July with the new one up for decoration in August. Canada is a Star Wars bar of every creed, wart and colour. A land of mammoths and dinosaurs whose frozen, tundra-covered fossils have yet to be discovered. At least Rosie will be kept busy excavating for giant Likaloddapus. If they thought bloated political correctness was ebbing in the States, Canada will handsomely compensate. There’s more PC up there than snow. A new Venezuela will be born on the Northern Border. What does ‘Oh Kanada’ have to say about this? Justin will be having damp dreams in ecstasy (that’s ‘in’ not ‘on’, but who knows?). Now, at least more than 10 people know who Justin Trudeau is, because for the last 50 odd years, nobody in the rest of the world knew who the hell was running Canada. However, one suspects Canada’s current PC fascism gone stark raving mad might soon wane and be offering sanctity to two million Bangladeshi masons (of the trowel type) to see

how quick they can build their own wall. A Canadian joke would go something like: “Lance Armstrong got such a raw deal. When I’m on drugs, I can’t even find my bike.” Vancouver, with its entrepreneurial Chinese contingent is better known as ‘Sichuan Valley’. At least the summer lasts more than a week there and Mohamed is not the most common name given to a newborn. ‘Sudden Lee’ crops up a lot though. “Where is Canada?” asked the American. “Eh aboot….” answered the Canadian. “It’s a soda – la?” questioned the Arab. “It’s full of xxxx all!” said the Duke of Edinburgh. “I’m emigrating there three months from now. My entire family will join me next year,” gleefully boast most Indians. Why? Why? What’s white and covers the streets 11 months of the year in Canada? Unemployed people! Canadians barbarically pummel each other and call it hockey; club baby seals to death and shoot anything with four legs and fur, yet say ‘Thank you’ to the ATM machine when it spews the cash. Canadians, those that don’t speak Algonquin, would happily allow a man to have 17 wives (17 being the limit as 18 would make it a golf course and Donald would find that is too competitive). Criminals get told off and axe murderers get three years with colour TV. A mime artist did ‘unspeakable’ things to a lady in an igloo and received a severe wagging finger and told not to do it again. Liberal, polite Canada, you are in trouble because those American migrants will NOT understand your British based humour..ugh..humor! www.bahrainthismonth.com
