Welcome to October, the month when we celebrate all things German – Unity Day, various Oktoberfests and our special Germany in Bahrain supplement including interviews with German Ambassador, HE Alfred Simms-Protz, and businesswoman Birgit Hobaugh, who has made it her mission to help Bahrainis access German medical expertise and introduce her countrymen to the island’s charms. October is the also the month when we notice a significant change in the weather – temperatures are cooling down and the outdoor social scene is heating up with multiple festivals to look forward to. There’s the first Bahrain Jazz Fest; Melodika at Al Dar; Trib Fest at Bahrain Rugby Football Club; the return of the annual Bahrain International Music Festival with numerous global acts coming in; two jazz concerts and a tango performance organised by Alliance Française Bahrain; and a celebratory salsa carnival at Hawar. Find details of these and lots of other fun events in our extensive happenings section, which is updated throughout the month at barhainthismonth.com In our interview section we hear from: Richard Rooze, the new man in charge at the British Council; Dr Farzana Al Sayed, an internationally recognised neurologist, who is one of the driving forces behind a planned new rehabilitation facility for the island; and teen ecologist Loewi Schils, the 17-year-old activist who has launched a marine group, MOSLA (Make Our Seas Live Again), which aims to make the most of one of the island’s most precious resources. In the motoring section, our lucky motoring correspondent takes a trip to Turkey to get acquainted with the latest offering from Volvo. And, in eating out, we’ve sampled the delights of both Attic and the new carnivore menu at Le Sauvage at The Domain – check out the dining section to see what we thought. Also in dining, we take a look at the Kingdom’s Italian restaurant scene, from the established favourites to new eateries just begging to be tried, and we’ve got our regular round-up of news and offers in Table Hopping. Elsewhere you’ll find lots of motoring and business news plus our round-up of the latest Autumn-Winter fashion trends, and the best things to do, see, try and buy from the worlds of gaming, films, music and more. However you plan to enjoy the cooler weather, make sure to take Bahrain This Month along for your guide to a great way of life.

There are also plenty of leading local artists, includig Fawazo, YoFo, Ali B, Kayan, HSE and Sandra Knight. Local designers will be showcasing their crafts and there’ll be plenty of great food and fresh fruit for a fabulous experience, from 1pm to the early hours. This exhibition draws on the permanent collection of the Bahrain National Museum in addition to highlights from the National Museum of Kuwait and illustrates an exceptional selection of seals spanning the third and second millennia BCE. The display examines the use, techniques, diversity and splendour of the Dilmun seals. Hardly bigger than a few centimetres, the seals were a main administrative tool used to organise trade. Their distinctive form, engravings and use of local material reveal valuable insight into the structure of the Dilmun society and the prevailing sociocultural conditions. Visit www.culture.gov.bh

BREAKING THE LANGUAGE BARRIER

APPLE SHARMA Recently appointed director of the British Council, Richard Rooze talks about how the organisation is continuing its storied tradition of cultural and educational relations with Bahrain.
Richard Rooze
S
ince its humble beginnings in 1948, the British Council in Bahrain has built a remarkable reputation for connecting generations of people with learning opportunities and creative ideas from the UK, as well as helping to foster cultural relations between the two countries. Through programmes and events in the areas of education, English, arts and society, it has changed the lives of thousands of students, helping them to learn English, study in the UK, showcase their talents and improve their skills. “The single-sentence summary of our organisation is that we’re here to build friendly knowledge and understanding,” says Richard. “Our main focus where we do that here in Bahrain is in the education sector, whether it’s working with the Ministry of Education on teacher development or helping to facilitate mutually beneficial partnerships between UK and Bahraini higher education institutions.” New at the helm in Bahrain, Richard was previously director of the British Council in Barcelona for three and a half years. Having also lived and worked in Riyadh, he had a good 36 October 2017
sense of what to expect before arriving. “I’ve always had a very positive impression of Bahrain and it’s one of my favourite countries to visit in the Gulf region,” he says. As a world leader in teaching English, the British Council works directly with the public, offering English courses at its teaching centres, as well as online. “We have a very successful English language teaching operation here, particularly for young learners,” Richard says. With a broad and diverse staff of 75, 39 of whom are Bahraini, the British Council takes an in-house approach to language teaching. “When we talk to parents and students and ask them why they come here, what everybody really wants is to be able to use the language. Sometimes in schools it can be taught as a slightly more academic subject with lots of meaty grammar,” explains Richard. “We try to avoid that. Our focus is much more on can you actually use this grammar?” The British Council also strives to contribute to the development of Bahraini society. With the Kingdom identifying in its Vision 2030 that it aims to move towards being a Knowledge
Economy, the British Council has been working with schools to develop the skills of young people in subjects such as science, technology and engineering through various workshops run by British experts. Richard hails the success of such efforts that have given young learners the chance to connect and access a wider global world. “This is the kind of story that we want, where we can open a sort of cultural window and inspire people in directions that will ultimately benefit the country.” Its work in society also extends to empowering those who are often marginalised, such as its residency art programme ‘ArtAbled’ for young people with disabilities. Now in its fourth year, the project has been a huge success. “It’s a really positive story because it’s a great opportunity for individual development for those children with disabilities. Our programme helps them explore their talents by providing art therapy training.” When speaking about his ambitions for his tenure, Richard says he would like to see the British Council teach more young children. “I think parents are sometimes reluctant to send their kids to do extra English, thinking they’ll be exhausted,” he says. “But one of the things that I’m most proud of is that we’re able to strike that balance between something that’s fun and motivating for the children, but which is also genuinely useful in improving their language skills.” Being a teacher himself, Richard is clearly passionate about his profession and the value of teachers as role models. And although slightly beyond what he admits he’s able to achieve, he adds, “If I was able to wave a magic wand and change things, one of the things I would ask for is that being a teacher is universally seen as being an inspiring, positive leader for the next generation of young people and the kind of job that everyone should want to have.” Watch out for exhibitions, public events and competitions coming up on www.britishcouncil. bh/en. www.bahrainthismonth.com

interview Please tell us about your background and areas of speciality. I am an American-board-certified in neurology, clinical neurophysiology and movement disorders. I did eight years training in this speciality in the US. What made you decide to pursue neurology – I understand you were among the first (if not the first) female neurologists in the Kingdom – it must have been quite a challenge to enter such a male-dominated field? I pursued neurology because I developed an interest in this field since I was a medical student. I found the science of brain fascinating and challenging, and saw that we have a great shortage of neurologists in Bahrain and in the area in general. Since neurological disorders are complex and require patience and focus, it was dominated by male physicians. I felt that I should take the challenge and be the first female neurologist in Bahrain. I found all the support from my family; however my colleagues felt that it might be a difficult and challenging field for a female. In the years since you returned to Bahrain after your training, are you finding patients and families are accepting of a woman in this position, and are more female students choosing to follow this speciality? Since my return from the US, I started teaching medical students at both medical universities in the Kingdom – Royal College of Surgeons Ireland (RCSI) and Arabian Gulf University (AGU). I would like to emphasise the role of a teaching doctor to influence students. Through proper training and teaching and making neurology exciting and challenging for the students, I would say the idea has completely changed, and I have a lot of my students pursuing the field of neurology – females and males. I’m excited that a number of my students are already completing their training in neurology in different countries and will be back soon to serve our beloved country. You are now involved with the recently announced Delmon Rehab centre and have said there is a great need for this type of facility in the Kingdom. Why do you feel it is so important? As part of my speciality in neurology, I deal with a lot of neurological conditions requiring rehabilitation afterwards, such as strokes, multiple sclerosis and patients after traumatic brain injury. I found this field to be lacking, unfortunately, in our country and even in the 38 October 2017
Dr Farzana Alsayed
OFFERING SPECIALISED CARE Consultant neurologist, Dr Farzana Alsayed of the recently announced Delmon Rehab centre, tells Liz O’Reilly about the need for dedicated rehabilitation services in Bahrain. Gulf area. We are in desperate need for a specialised rehabilitation centre, where the patients are attended after their discharge from hospital. This is a vital step for recovery and it’s financially costly to our country to have such a prolonged stay for patients in the hospital, where you require beds for patients with more urgent causes. What will your role be and what categories of injuries/conditions do you expect to be treating? I will be helping with my professional colleagues in running this state-of-the-art centre and making sure the best care is provided to our patients until they are discharged back to their homes as a functional part of the society. Is this the first facility of its kind and, if yes, what research has been carried out to assess
the need? We have gone through a feasibility study addressing the need of such services in Bahrain and in the region, and had excessive meetings with pioneers in the field of health and business, which all proved that such a service is a definite requirement. Do you expect it to become a regional centre or will it be purely for Bahrain residents? I expect this to be state-of-the-art centre providing comprehensive rehabilitation services that I dreamt about in our region. Anything else you would like to add? I have to say, I’m very excited to pursue this vital project with all my highly professional colleagues, and have great hopes that it will attract patients who are in need for such services from Bahrain and the Gulf region. www.bahrainthismonth.com

Mohamed Ftouni
BOSS OF THE BAY BEHNAZ SANJANA Seasoned hotelier Mohamed Ftouni has taken over the reins of one of the island’s favourite beach resorts. He chats about his future plans for the property under his able leadership.
L
ebanese by descent, Mohamed has been a top player in Bahrain’s vibrant hospitality industry for the past 17 years. As the new general manager, he aims to bring Coral Bay Resort to even greater glory, with his solid expertise. He says: “It’s been just three months here as part of Remya and Expertise Management, which manages and runs most aspects of the property owned by Seven Leisure Restaurant Management WLL. I usually work 13-hour days, but I’m enjoying every bit of it. It helps that my place of work is so scenic!” Mohamed admits that change is never easy, and there are a few hurdles that need to be overcome, but he is happy to see that he is part of a unified team that works as one to achieve a positive result. “That is the beauty of change,” he says. He is upbeat about the amenities that the establishment offers and has made certain changes in their operations to better suit guests. “Coral Bay is an all-in-one stop for people in Bahrain,” he says. “We are the best 40 October 2017
option for those who want to party, unwind, undertake water sports, be entertained and are seeking an unparalleled gourmet experience in a beautiful ambience. “Our poolside is quite popular with residents and tourists alike, so we have decided to extend the timings from 9am all the way to 9pm, so guests can make the most of their relaxation here. Fish Mania offers the ocean’s best, along with a spectacular view of the waters. I guarantee that even people who are not fans of seafood will enjoy their experience here. We also organise theme nights to serve as a local getaway in the heart of Manama. Our business buffet is priced very reasonably, as we want to make it accessible for the majority in Bahrain.” Rayes, the Lebanese restaurant, is close to Mohamed’s heart. The outlet sees a crowd of 200-250 guests even over weekdays, something that he attributes to the restaurant’s authentic cuisine and affordable prices – a fact that he wishes more people would know. Talking about the C Hotel, Bahrain’s only floating boutique property, Mohamed says: “We
really pamper guests who stay here. The exclusive rooms are always in demand and our clients really appreciate the special facilities like free access to the infinity pool and bar, the gym and a 15 per cent discount on all treatments at the luxurious Coral Spa.” Mohamed is excited about the plans in the pipeline, and is steadily working to see them to fruition, saying: “We have already started collaborating with more international performers to bring world-class entertainment to Bahrain every weekend, not just once every few months. We cater to 1,000 guests over holidays, and they eagerly inquire about the events for the coming weeks. Sean Kingston will be performing here on October 5, and that is a much-anticipated event.” Mohamed remains honoured that, with the support of his organisation and its efficient staff, he has been able to take steps to achieve his objectives and attract more loyal customers. “I hope that by the grace of Almighty God we can create unforgettable memories in the minds of our valued guests who patronise Coral Bay Resort,” he adds. www.bahrainthismonth.com

BOY GENIUS PUJA TIWARI An inventive young man is setting a fine example by launching an initiative to repopulate Bahrain’s seas.
M
ake Our Seas Live Again (MOSLA) is an awareness campaign to combat the declining fish population and coral growth, created by 17-year-old Bahrain School student Loewi Schils. The teen prodigy started the project to inform people about the dangers faced by the sea such as dredging, land reclamation, over fishing and pollution, and subsequently aiming to garner support through its Facebook page. “Our first initiative is the deployment of an artificial reef in Durrat Al Bahrain,” he says. “People can sponsor reef balls, which are basically fish houses. We chose Durrat because it is a protected area and the artificial reef would not fall under the usual fishing pressure as in open waters.” Loewi is inviting sponsors to make donations, who will have their names engraved on a stainless steel plaque on the reef ball. “This will be accompanied by a certificate of sponsorship and updated videos of how the reef balls are doing,” he adds. “For those who want to sponsor an entire reef ball, the price is BD100. Other categories consist of BD50 for half of the plaque, BD25 for a fourth and BD15 for an eighth of it.” Those who wish to donate an amount of BD1 or more will get a chance to get their names on a reef ball through a raffle. The dynamic youngster’s second objective is to protect natural reef Bul Thama. “Bul Thama is one of the few remaining natural reefs around Bahrain,” he explains. “We aim to educate about the damage done to 42 October 2017

it by fishing and bring about the enforcement of the current commercial fishing ban which is in place. “As a cultural heritage sight, it is protected from commercial fishing; however, it still happens. We also encourage people to use the mooring buoys which have been set there in order to prevent damaging corals by anchoring.” Loewi is an avid fan of marine life, and started MOSLA as part of a graduating community service project to tackle key issues. “The problem is that there is no system in place to impose environmental compensation for all the negative externalities which marine life has been subjected to,” he elaborates. “Fishing practices have become so effective that the sea does not have a chance to cope. On the other hand, there are also issues such as oil spills, invasive species, and a general rise
in sea temperature, which also pose a threat to the integrity of the marine environment. “It’s really a matter of cause and effect. If we examine these issues more closely, we find that they are due to the same central causes, as those listed earlier, this time on a larger scale.” Loewi has a few activities planned in the pipeline in conjunction with his scheme. “I am currently planning an environmental day at the Bahrain Yacht Club on November 3,” he says. “Reef Arabia will bring their barge with the reef balls, which people have sponsored, and we will organise a beach clean-up. I would like to thank the Bahrain Yacht Club, Reef Arabia and Durrat Al Bahrain for making this possible.” Call 32 224-924, follow MOSLA on Facebook, or email loewi@mosla.net www.bahrainthismonth.com

HE Alfred Simms-Protz
Celebrating Stability LIZ O’REILLY As he heads into his third year in post, German Ambassador HE Alfred Simms-Protz is hopeful the new government in his home country will make for increased interest in the region. Having arrived in July 2015, His Excellency says his aims were that of any ambassador – to build on relations and help increase investment between the two countries. But, pragmatically, he concedes: “That was my intent but I have to be honest and say I think I have just maintained the stable, friendly level but there has not been a dramatic increase in visits or investment. The chances for an ambassador to make a difference are limited; it depends on reciprocal visits. There are a number of factors that have limited that in the case of Bahrain. Particularly in the last six months our [German] politicians have been preoccupied with the elections that took place on September 24 and our foreign policy focus has been very much on Europe – areas such as the EU after Brexit and the issue of refugees as well as the Trans-Atlantic relationship. “Other than our Defence Minister, who came for the Manama Dialogue, there has not been a high-level visit for a while. I have been trying to get the Foreign Minister to come and I am hopeful that will happen in the not too distant future. 46 October 2017
However, recent news of a large-scale investment in the Kingdom by German company Armacell – which in May broke ground for a factory at Bahrain International Investment Park that, when completed in 2018, will produce a range of products, including high-density materials and elastomeric insulation for heating, ventilation and air-conditioning systems – is expected to excite increased investment interest. The project will create around 100 jobs with some workers coming from Germany, adding to the 500-strong local German community, and others being hired locally. His Excellency says: “I think German companies can find excellent opportunities here, because of the location as a gateway to Saudi Arabia and other countries in the region and we have been in discussions [with potential investors] in areas such as manufacturing, logistics, environmental technology, solar energy et cetera – the country is definitely an attractive investment proposition, on top of being the world’s number one destination for expats, as an international survey confirmed recently. “As in the case of Armacell, the location is important, particularly now with increased ease of border processing. Also, lower costs in comparison to the UAE, excellent infrastructure and the easy, liberal lifestyle give Bahrain the edge for both companies and their employees.”
The bilateral volume of trade stood at EUR359 million (BD158 million) last year, with Bahrain exporting EUR18.6 million (BD8.2 million) and importing EUR340.2 million (BD150 million) in items such as cars, machinery and pharmaceutical products. For the future, His Excellency is confident this can be increased as investment opportunities continue to grow. Moving forward, plans for the coming year include a major cultural event which is still in the pipeline but expected to be during the winter months. The embassy will also be celebrating German Unity Day on October 3 and the new – or old – Defence Minister, once named, is expected to travel to the island for the Manama Dialogue in December, which His Excellency says is always a useful event, providing an excellent opportunity for bilateral meetings on the margins, including with the host country Bahrain. In conclusion, His Excellency says Bahrain will continue to hold a special attraction for him even after his term as ambassador comes to an end, explaining: “I enjoy interacting with the people of Bahrain. They are very open, welcoming and friendly – that has been my experience from day one, and I truly appreciate that. Newcomers instantly feel at home in Bahrain, it’s so easy to live and work here. I also have to say I love the weather – even in July and August! Some people complain about the heat but I find it makes me feel alive!” www.bahrainthismonth.com
The Travel Connection very flexible with our offers. We see our company as a travel expert and consultant, and our customers receive a lot of information, recommendations and support when booking their leisure or business travel. We talk to our clients, who are mostly from Bahrain but also some from across the region, to find out their needs and to make their travel an unforgettable experience. Germany has a lot of different landscapes and there is a perfect destination for everyone. Our goal is it to share our experience and organise the perfect trip. Do you see the number of German visitors to Bahrain rising, falling or staying the same, and what do you feel could be done to bring in more tourists? I am a licensed tourist guide in Bahrain, and I welcome 1,000 German speaking tourists every year. Many are coming for just half a day by cruise ship in the winter season. The number of tourists staying in Bahrain for a few days is increasing, because those who are interested in the Arabic and GCC countries want to discover Bahrain as well. We are promoting the rich history, the traditions and culture as well as Bahrain’s citizens, who are so welcoming to their guests.
Birgit Hobaugh
Birgit Hobaugh tells Liz O’Reilly about her experience of setting up a one-of-a-kind business assisting Bahrainis to find medical treatment in Germany. You operate Bahraini German International Services, along with your partner Mohammed – what made you want to set up an operation in Bahrain? Mohammed Al Sharqi gave me the opportunity to become a businesswoman in a field where I could help patients needing to receive treatment abroad. Being a German national, I felt confident to offer the best quality services to our customers, since German healthcare is among the best in the world. Mohammed had offered services for Arabic patients, who received spa and rehabilitation treatment in the Czech Republic and it was a perfect idea to extend this to all medical fields in Germany. www.bahrainthismonth.com
When we applied for the CR [Company Registration] in 2003, the field of Health Tourism services was not available on the list of business opportunities and we became the first company with such a CR. Bahrainis had been travelling to Germany for medical treatment for a long time, but they always visited the same cities and doctors. My goal was and is to search for the specialist in the individual patient’s disease who can offer the correct diagnosis and offer treatment. Most patients have contacted many doctors before they talk to me and have been unable to find assistance. We have helped many patients in the almost 14 years since we opened. You expanded into the general tourism area, introducing Arabs to Germany and Germans to Bahrain – has this proved successful? Expanding your business field is very important in Bahrain and as a service company we are
How has your business coped and competed with the massive explosion in online travel booking? We are available for those who need support and information. And our service includes a lot more than booking engines can do. We are focusing on worldwide travel for groups, for example. Our Motorcycle Travel Group MTG is already working on the schedule for 2018, offering motorcycle trips. In the past four years we have organised 15 group tours, all starting from Munich, Germany. This region is a paradise for bike riders. Other than your business, what role do you play within the island’s German community – are there groups and activities? I like to bring our community together for different activities and by sending information through my database. With some other people, I am also welcoming new Germans moving to Bahrain, answering their first questions and introducing them to the community. October 2017 47

This leading car dealership on the island launches its brand-new luxury sedan and announces a strategic partnership with another industry giant. Al Haddad Motors, the official distributor of Mercedes-Benz in the Kingdom, has unveiled the latest addition to the Mercedes-Benz family – the all new S-Class. During the launch, the company also made an exciting announcement about their newly joined partnership with Majestic Cars. This is the first-ever agreement where the authorised distributor has signed a corporate deal with Majestic Cars to carry a fleet of 20 S-Class, 8 E-Class and 1 GLS. Catering to the high-end customers in Bahrain, Majestic will be the only company to have the latest S-Class in its fleet. The S-Class comes with many new inventions and has been proven to be the most desired luxury vehicle in the world. Among the features of the S 450 are: • Intelligent Drive takes the vehicle to a new level of autonomous driving with driver assistance systems and substantially expanded functionality. • The latest ENERGIZING comfort control gives the driver total control over climate, lighting 48 October 2017
and musical atmosphere, and enables a specific wellness set-up tailored to the mood and need of each customer. • The high-quality interior is created with meticulous attention to detail and craftsmanship, featuring a new widescreen cockpit, and woodleather steering wheel as standard. • The model’s exterior is complemented with crystal-look tail lamps, a new radiator grille, MULTIBEAM LED headlights and three distinctive torches of light as an exclusive design element. • It comes with a V6 engine with a displacement of 2.996 and a rated torque of 270/367 (kW/hp). The new Mercedes-Benz S-Class retains its title as the undisputed leader of intelligence, power, performance and luxury. The top-of-therange model takes another big step towards autonomous driving and elevates Intelligent Drive to the next level. The new S-Class adds an additional layer of excellence by incorporating and enhancing a host of innovative driving assistance systems initially introduced in the previous model. These include the Active Steer Assist, which has been noticeably improved across its entire performance range, resulting in markedly enhanced customer benefits. The Active
Breaking Assist, which detects end-of-tailback situations without space for evasive action, triggers a warning as well as automatic emergency stopping when required. The Evasive Steering Assist supports the driver in taking evasive action when pedestrians are detected in the danger zone in front of the vehicle. With PRE-SAFE Sound, a short interference signal is triggered ahead of any collisions expected to produce a loud crash, in order to protect the eardrum and inner ear from high acoustic pressures. The new S-Class’ suspension control is further improved, as the stereo camera of the system now scans the road even more thoroughly, even in dusk and at speeds up to 180km/h. Another comfort enhancement is CURVE, the curve-tilting function available in the S-Class sedan for the first time. The body tilts to the inside of the turn by up to 2.65 degrees, thereby reducing the centrifugal forces perceived by the passengers. Seven new light-alloy wheels with diameters between 17 and 20 inches have been introduced on the new model. The front bumper with pronounced air intakes and sporty looks is also new. Mobile phones can be charged wirelessly and without a telephone holder. The Burmester High-End 3D Surround Sound system with an output of 1,520 watts has been expanded with a speaker in the overhead control panel and two speakers in the sides. With 64 colours, the ambient lighting offers a wealth of individual settings that add a welcoming effect upon entering the cabin. Because the cockpit is fully digital, the driver can choose from three different display styles (Classic, Sporty and Progressive) and also configure the information and views relevant to them. The new S-Class will be available in six model variants in the GCC markets: Mercedes-Benz S 450, Mercedes-Benz S 560, Mercedes-Benz S 560 4MATIC, Mercedes-AMG S 63 4MATIC+, Mercedes-AMG S 65 and Mercedes-Maybach S 650. The Mercedes-Benz S 560 e, an upgraded plug-in hybrid variant, will be available later in the year. Call Al Haddad Motors on 17 785-454. www.bahrainthismonth.com

BEHBEHANI BROTHERS: PORSCHE
Fast and Faster This marque’s new introduction is brimming with potential, featuring newly developed engines, chassis, control concept and more connectivity. Porsche is introducing the third generation of the brand’s successful SUV. A completely new development from the Stuttgart-based sports car manufacturer, the Cayenne combines typical Porsche performance with excellent everyday practicality. Powerful turbo engines, a new eight-speed Tiptronic S gearbox and new chassis systems, alongside an innovative display and control concept with increased connectivity take both sportiness and comfort to the next level. There are two newly developed six-cylinder engines to choose from. The Cayenne’s 340hp (250kW), three-litre turbo engine delivers 40hp (29kW) more than the previous model. The 2.9litre V6 biturbo engine in the Cayenne S, which reaches speeds of up to 265km/h, brings it up to 440hp (324kW) – an increase of 20hp (15kW). Equipped with the optional Sport Chrono Package, the new Cayenne S accelerates from zero to 100km/h in less than five seconds. Based on the iconic 911 sports car, the brand’s SUV has been enhanced visually and features mixed tyres as well as rear-axle steering for the first time. On-road capabilities of the model are also further improved thanks to active all-wheel drive as standard, Porsche 50 October 2017
4D Chassis Control, three-chamber air suspension and the Porsche Dynamic Chassis Control (PDCC) electronic roll stabilisation system. Despite its significantly extended range of standard equipment, the Cayenne S weighs up to 65kg less than its predecessor and remains perfectly suited to off-road use. The appearance of the Cayenne has been further enhanced in line with the Porsche Design DNA. The enlarged air intakes at the front are clear indicators of the increased performance. Meanwhile, the new horizontal light edges result in the SUV appearing wider and more athletic, even when stationary. The luggage compartment volume has been increased by 100 litres and now offers 770-litre capacity. The wheels are one inch larger in diameter, with wider tyres on the rear axle for the first time, emphasising the improved driving dynamics. The iconic Porsche lettering spans across the redesigned rear lights, which feature a three-dimensional design and end-to-end narrow strip of LEDs. The SUV’s default setting is the Onroad programme; however, four other modes activate the conditioning for mild off-road terrain: Mud, Gravel, Sand or Rocks. The drive, chassis and differential locks can be selected to adapt to the relevant scenario. The new Cayenne combines three chassis concepts in one new design: sports car, offroader and touring car. Mixed tyres which are now on wheels of at least 19 inches are a
characteristic sports car feature applied to the new models – improving stability and driving dynamics on bends. For the first time, the Cayenne is available with electric rear-axle steering – a system tried and tested both in the 911 and the Panamera – improving agility on bends and stability when changing lanes at high speeds. The reduced turning circle also makes everyday handling of the SUV easier. With its innovative Porsche Surface Coated Brake (PSCB), the manufacturer is once again assuming a pioneering role in the development of high-performance brakes. This world first is available as an option for all Cayenne models and consists of a cast-iron disc with a tungstencarbide coating. Exclusive to Porsche, the brakes are also visually impressive, with callipers painted in white, while the surface of the discs develops a unique gloss level after bedding-in. Similarly to the 911 and the Panamera, the new body of the Cayenne also uses an intelligent combination of alloy and steel. One particular technical highlight is the innovative lithium-ion polymer starter battery, which alone accounts for a weight saving of 10kg over the predecessor model. The third generation of Porsche’s SUV models are available to order now, with first deliveries arriving in January 2018. Call Porsche Centre Bahrain on 17 459-911. www.bahrainthismonth.com

Speaking a new language can be fun and exciting and, if taught properly, can broaden your horizons, introducing you to a new world of opportunities.
52 October 2017
One of the main benefits of mastering a foreign lingo is that it opens up your world to new adventures and prospects. German is one such language. Why? It’s a no brainer, really. Amongst other compelling reasons, it is the most widely spoken native language in Europe – in Switzerland, Luxembourg and Liechtenstein as well as Germany itself. It’s also the lingo of a significant portion of the population in northern Italy, eastern
Belgium, the Netherlands, Denmark, eastern France, parts of Poland, the Czech Republic, Russia and Romania. It can give you a chance to access free education in Germany and it has a lot of similarities to English, so is easy to learn. The Language Course Programme of the German Embassy in Bahrain, located in Salmaniya, offers firstclass German lessons corresponding to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages, running courses for children and adults. The courses were initiated in 2009, as the brainchild of Dr Hubert Lang, who was the ambassador at that time. There has been an impressive growth since then through the dedication and commitment of all those involved, particularly Stefanie Russell, the former course coordinator. Due to the growing interest in Bahrain to learn German, there are now 15 courses offered at any time, from beginner to advanced levels. Children’s lessons start from the age of 11. Having a reasonable knowledge of German can open new vistas for further education or business opportunities. Germany offers international students a diverse range of academic opportunities within top class accredited universities, teaching courses for state examinations and bachelor’s, master’s and doctoral degrees. A German university degree is recognised and respected by organisations around the world. More and more educational programmes are being offered in English, especially at the master’s level, which will suit you just fine if you have a working knowledge of the native tongue. This is especially a win-win situation, thanks to the very low tuition fees and affordable living expenses in Germany in relation to the EU average. All these reasons make it prudent for those contemplating speaking a vernacular lingo to seriously consider learning German. Apart from various courses for all ages, special packages can be arranged for school or university students. The teachers conducting the lessons for the embassy’s language courses are highly qualified holders of various teaching degrees and native German speakers. Upon successful completion of the curriculum, participants are issued a certificate at a gala ceremony held at the embassy. Students who have reached a certain level of proficiency in the dialect are able to take certified language examinations, held on the island, such as the internationally recognised Goethe Certificate. In-Sparational Travel Germany is a country known across the world for its spas. Don’t book your next trip without our guide to our top five pampering destinations. Baden-Baden Located in the state of Baden-Württemberg in southwestern Germany, BadenBaden lies at the northwestern border of the Black Forest mountain range on the river Oos. The town’s springs were known to the Romans as aquae and the name Baden actually means bath or bathing. You can look forward to an exceptional thermal bath in springs of water sourced deep in the earth, while surrounded by the hills of the Black Forest. The city offers many options for sports enthusiasts; golf and tennis are both popular in the area and horse races take place each May, August and October at nearby Iffezheim. The countryside is ideal for hiking and mountain climbing and in the winter Baden-Baden is also a skiing destination.
Bad Kissingen This is a spa town in the Bavarian region of Lower Franconia and seat of the district Bad Kissingen. Situated to the south of the Rhön Mountains on the Franconian Saale River, it is one of the health resorts which became famous as a ‘Weltbad’ in the 19th century. The KissSalis Therme bathing centre is a highlight of the town. It was completed in 2004 and includes 10,000sq/ft of water surface which derives from the Schönborn springs. There are several music and entertainment festivals throughout the year, including the Kabarettherbst and the Kissinger Piano Olympics, both of which take place during the winter. And the town and surrounding area offer a wide range of sports from football to shooting.
Bad Homburg Part of the Frankfurt Rhein-Main urban area, this town is best known for its medically useful waters and spa and for its casino. The spa industry began with the discovery of the Elisabethenbrunnen (brunnen is German for well) in 1834. The first spa building and the first casino in Homburg were built in 1841-1842 by the brothers François and Louis Blanc, who later took over the Casino in Monte Carlo. As well as the world-renowned spa, the town boasts a triathlon week, cycle racing, a beautiful Christmas market and a range of events from poetry to castle concerts throughout the year.
Wiesbaden Wiesbaden is one of the oldest spa towns in Europe. Its name translates to “meadow baths”, making reference to the hot springs. It is internationally famous for its architecture, climate (also called the “Nice of the North”), and its hot springs. At one time the town boasted 26 hot springs; 14 of these are still flowing today. 54 October 2017
Bad Greisbach Located about 20 miles from Passau, the town is famous for its stunning views over the countryside of Bavaria. There are numerous hotels offering professional wellness teams. The thermal water of Bad Griesbach comes from a depth of more than 1,500 metres and is recognised as one of Europe’s most fluoride-rich sources of sodium hydrogen carbonate. Naturally heated, it is used to treat rheumatic and digestive disorders, among others. Bad Greisbach is also extremely popular with golfers, boasting no fewer than six 18-hole courses as well as a number of shorter learners’ courses.
Situated in central western Germany on the north bank of the Rhine, there is evidence of settlement at Wiesbaden going back to the Neolithic era. Each May, the town hosts an international arts festival, featuring music, dance, lectures, cabaret and more and, from the end of November until December 23, it is home to the Shooting Star Market with its massive decorations and 28-metre Christmas tree. www.bahrainthismonth.com

germanyinbahrain GERMAN ROUND-UP
In Business Together Bahrain and Germany have enjoyed many years of cordial relations and from culture to commerce there is no doubting the European nation’s influence on the island.
BTEA at Seatrade Europe
The German presence is nowhere more obvious than in the motoring sector with manufacturers such as BMW, Mercedes and Porsche having long-standing dealerships in the Kingdom through Euro Motors, Al Haddad Motors and Behbehani Brothers respectively. And though, as we have seen from Birgit’s testimony, many Bahrainis are happy to travel to partake of German medical expertise, there are also plenty of options to access this in Bahrain, such as the German Skin Care Centre, the German Orthopaedic Hospital and the German Medical Centre. German-headquartered international consultancy, Roland Berger, has a regional operation in the Kingdom and, as of 12 months ago, there were around 50 German companies which either have local offices or are engaged in projects here. Some of them may be surprising, such as popular restaurant chain Vapiano, which serves a much-loved Italian menu but is, in fact, German based. Others are more easily recognisable names including BASF, RMA, DHL, SMS Meer, Allianz Global Investors and Agility alongside the new arrival Armacell.
With an eye to increasing trade, a high-level delegation, led by HE Kamal bin Ahmed Mohamed, Minister of Transport and Telecommunications, and HE Khalid Al Rumaihi, chief executive of the Economic Development Board, visited the Transport Logistics exhibition held in Munich earlier this year. Their mission was to showcase the investment opportunities Bahrain offers in this important sector which accounts for seven per cent of GDP and provides 19,000 local jobs. Also this year, a delegation representing the island’s tourism sector attended ITB Berlin, the world’s biggest travel trade show, marketing the destination as a hub for meetings, conferences and events. In September, a delegation from the Bahrain Tourism and Exhibition Authority took part in the Seatrade Europe exhibition, held in Germany, to highlight cruise and yachting facilities in the Kingdom. And this month will see a German pavilion at the Bahrain International Defence Exhibition and Conference. For those engaged in bilateral relations, the Language Course Programme of the German Embassy promotes improved communications and there are various other options offered at specialist centres, including Berlitz, across the island. 56 October 2017

MOTORING
A DRIVE TO REMEMBER CHARLIE HOLDING With its long, winding roads and majestic mountains, Turkey proved the ideal place to put this new model through its paces.
W
hen I test drive cars in Bahrain it’s fun but it gets a little formulaic. I acquaint myself with the controls, cruise from one familiar place to another, navigate pretty much the same streets and, finally, I try to find a new place to take some pictures – which is challenging on a small island. So, it was a literal breath of fresh air when I was invited to Turkey to drive the new Volvo XC60. After a few hours on a plane, a couple more in an airport lounge, and another brief flight, I had arrived. The weather was absolutely beautiful. It was warm but not humid and there was a gentle breeze that lingered all day long – perfect for a test drive. The other motoring journalists and I were picked up by an entourage of sleek new XC60s and driven to brunch at Yuvarlakcay. It’s a beautiful river located in the Topgozu Canyon – between the provinces of Koycegiz and Ortaca – that feeds off the snowy waters of the mountain range. 60 October 2017
After sampling some local dishes, I couldn’t wait to get behind the wheel of this premium SUV. The time had come. To say that Volvo has come a long way over the past decade is an understatement. Long gone are the days when the marque was regarded as a nothing more than a safe choice. Don’t get me wrong, these cars are still incredibly safe (more on that later) but they have been revamped, redesigned and are honestly some of the best-looking models on the market right now. The XC60’s exterior has an athletic sculpture with a subtle, timeless quality. The interior is a masterful composition of well-resolved architecture, quality materials and the very latest technology – all beautifully blended together. It was an hour and a half drive to the Golden Key Bördübet hotel and, despite being worn out from travelling, I was eager to hit the road. I did have a slight issue connecting my iPod via Bluetooth, but that might have been because the language was set to Turkish! After a relatively simple swap over, this stunning SUV

was telling me where to go – very politely I might add. The sound system is worth bragging about too. All drivers know how important the right soundtrack is to a roadtrip, so decent speakers are an absolute must. The XC60’s sound was crystal clear, very loud and had plenty of base – just the way I like it. The route took us along the highway, through some country lanes and, eventually, up a series of cliffs. Some of the roads on the way to the top had no barriers and looming edges that, although beautiful, evoked great caution. After a good night’s sleep, I was up early and excited to get back behind the wheel for the next leg of the roadtrip. When you’re facing a 200km drive, comfort is essential. Luckily for me the seats in the XC60 were great and provided my poor old back with plenty of support and with room to stretch out. For anyone not lucky enough to have visited Turkey, I highly recommend it. The roads are fantastic for driving thanks to the seemingly endless stretches. It also proved a perfect www.bahrainthismonth.com
location to test the way this model handles. Some of the turns on route along the coastline were precarious at best and the blind corners and hairpins are almost as abundant as the stunning scenery. My XC60 never faltered, not once – I wish I could say the same for myself. While the locals appeared to take corners with Lewis Hamilton-esque speed, I was quite happy to take my time. This model definitely has the power to surprise. With four variants available, you can pick an option that suits you best and, believe me, whichever you choose, you’ll love it. I spent the majority of my time in the AWD T6, which boasts a powerful 320bhp engine. The torque, throttle response and steering left nothing to be desired, and, trust me, when you put your foot down you hurtle along with gusto. We made our way to Akyaka, an unspoilt village regarded as one of the must-visit destinations in the coastal province. Slightly off the beaten track, it proved a good opportunity to take in some scenery before stopping for lunch. After a driver swap, we were off again on the next leg of the journey for a coffee break at Sakar Hill, a historic location prominent during the Ottoman Empire reign in the 1520s, which was used by the army led by Kanuni Sultan Suleyman on their route to their Rhodes conquest. Getting there requires effort – that’s putting it mildly. Uphill and off-road, I got the chance to really push the all-wheel drive capabilities of this SUV and it lived up to my expectations. Gravelly paths, moderately steep climbs and equivalent descents were no problem for the XC60 – save for getting a little dirty. www.bahrainthismonth.com
When we reached the top, the view was breathtaking. A vast expanse surrounds the lapping waters below and it proved to be a tranquil experience. As we got back into the cars to make our way back to the hotel, I had a chance to play around with the on-board tech, which was great fun. The Sensus infotainment system in this vehicle is state-of-the-art to say the least. Intuitive and simple to use, it’s among the finest I’ve ever experienced, and the fact that the nine-inch screen is laid out vertically rather than horizontally definitely adds to the appeal. Although the XC60 I drove was packed with a plethora of lifesaving technology, it was fortuitous I didn’t have to use it. There is far too much to mention, but one of the highlights is a
new safety system called Oncoming Lane Mitigation, which uses Steer Assist to help avoid head-on collisions. The Blind Spot Indication System also utilises Steer Assist to reduce the risk of lane-changing collisions. Add to this an abundance of airbags and meticulous attention to structural integrity and it’s clear that Volvo is on track for its plan to have zero fatalities in its cars by 2020. The last leg of the journey took us back up the twisting mountains to the hotel. When we arrived the sun had sadly set – figuratively and literally – on my time with the beautiful XC60. What an experience! Motorcity is the Kingdom’s Volvo dealer. Call 17 736-222 to book a test drive.

EURO MOTORS
The Custom Connection This world-renowned marque has been creating individual motoring masterpieces for a quarter of a century. Offering sheer driving pleasure at its most exclusive, BMW Individual produces unique cars that are designed in accordance with its customers’ wishes and expectations. Since its establishment in 1992, BMW Individual has enjoyed very close connections with its customers. The possibilities are almost infinite – the personalisation itself is very simple. The portfolio of BMW Individual has just the right range for every customer looking for that something special. The collection encapsulates perfectly coordinated features, which are aligned with the character of the respective BMW series: from special paintwork, leathers and interior trims, to selected alloy wheels or coolers. The customer is the designer of their car. Whether interior or exterior, golden door handles or the family crest on the headrest – almost every wish can come true. The only prerequisite being that the customised manufacture must not contradict safety requirements, qualities typical of the brand or legal requirements. And BMW Individual consistently demonstrates its capability with extra special models that are a result of collaboration with handpicked partners. Limited editions, often manufactured as unique pieces, get to the heart of the potential and passion of the BMW 62 October 2017
Individual employees. On the 25th anniversary, the BMW Individual M760Li, inspired by Nautor’s Swan, makes its debut. Another milestone in the history of the factory based in Garching, just outside Munich. The history of BMW Individual goes back 25 years. In 1992, it was none other than designer Karl Lagerfeld who sketched the first drafts of a personalised BMW. He also received delivery of the first custom-made BMW, a 750iL in two tone paint, black at the bottom and silver on top, with a fine green line separating the two colours. The interior coverings were made out of the fabric from Karl Lagerfeld’s briefcase at that time. From the front passenger seat, which was Lagerfeld’s favourite place to sit, he had access to a fax machine among other things. This was the green light for BMW Individual –
and accordingly for the first manufacture of personalised cars in the entire industry. From the outset, BMW Individual championed the highest quality and the fulfilment of any customer’s wishes. On the one hand, the launch of BMW Individual was a response to the continuing trend of making an individual statement in all spheres of life, and on the other hand it was an expression of the BMW brand’s commitment to and passion for that something special. BMW Individual soon became part of BMW M GmbH, which specialised in everyday highperformance vehicles, and still trades under this umbrella. In 1996, four years after the debut of the first BMW Individual car, the range was refined further. The cross series BMW Individual www.bahrainthismonth.com
collection in the form of paintwork, leathers and interior trims was unveiled. Added to this was sophisticated technology; with the rear seat entertainment, including TV/DVD, BMW Individual was a frontrunner in the industry, and, with the integration of an Internet connection in the car, was among the pioneers of vehicle digitalisation. In addition, BMW Individual has offered customers holistic vehicle design since 2001. Depending on the series, it arranges carefully matched individual compositions, thereby enabling particularly convenient personalisation, which is now available for almost every BMW model. With the offering from the BMW Individual Manufaktur, each customer can still design their very own BMW. The possibilities are almost without limit. In previous decades, numerous royal families and celebrities have made use of the service and discretion of the BMW Individual Manufaktur – and so have aficionados of the BMW brand and people who want to add a personal touch to sheer driving pleasure and enjoy it to the full. In 2015, BMW Individual introduced the BMW Individual 7 Series Augmented Reality app. Its purpose was not only to provide information, but primarily to help customers give their BMW that personal, unique touch. The same year, the app received the Red Dot Award: Communication Design. For many customers, the BMW Individual experience begins with the selection of their own personalisation options. The BMW Individual app offers valuable assistance during this process. It is available for iOS and Android and allows the user to discover all the options within the BMW Individual Collection, experience materials interactively, and display a realistic impression of the countless combinations available on a tablet or smartphone. Featuring an innovative design, it also offers an insight into the options available from the BMW Individual Manufaktur. This way, you can experience something that does not yet actually exist. Added to this are the particularly elaborate special models and unique specimens with which BMW Individual consistently demonstrates its full potential. These projects arise in cooperation with other companies, for example with the grand piano makers Steinway & Sons, the silverware specialists Robbe & Berking or the renowned watch manufacturer Girard Perregaux. The most recent example is the BMW Individual M760Li inspired by Nautor’s Swan. Over the past 50 years, the renown of Nautor’s www.bahrainthismonth.com
Swan has spread beyond the world of sailing and is understood to be synonymous with luxurious, highperformance yachts. BMW and the Finnish yacht designer and manufacturer share a partnership of many years’ standing. The two brands appear together at prestigious regattas such as ‘Les Voiles de SaintTropez’. This cooperation has produced a one-off model to celebrate the 25th anniversary of BMW Individual, combining the best of both worlds. The result: the BMW top model M760Li xDrive V12 Excellence, inspired by a glamorous sailing yacht. A brief glance is enough to reveal the yachting inspiration behind the model, with some elements being produced by hand at the yacht maker’s workshop in western Finland. These include teak panels with joints filled precisely with a fine layer of rubber. This carbon-bonded wooden component graces the boot floor in the BMW Individual M760Li inspired by Nautor’s Swan. The boot is also intricately fitted out in Alcantara Smoke White. The interior trims, entry sills and floor mats are also made with teak and have been produced by Nautor’s Swan. You can feel and see the yachting flair in every inch. This is enhanced by the presence of the Finnish brand’s insignia. The Nautor’s Swan signet is stitched into the headrests and cushions. It also adorns the sun visors and interior trims made of European oak on the driver’s side and the central console. The cooperation between the two brands is also apparent on the exterior. The brake calipers on the BMW Individual M760Li, which are exclusively finished in the same colour as the car, each bear a sublime relief Swan logo and the boot lid bears the company’s arrow motif. Based on the BMW M760Li xDrive luxury limousine, the starting point for such a special car was the already impressive BMW M760Li xDrive V12 Excellence. It has an exterior finished in the special BMW Individual colour damask red and a two-tone fine-grain Merino leather
interior in smoke white and Criollo brown. The same is true of other features finished in leather, such as the footrests in the back of the car. BMW Individual takes the full leather interior to the next level, integrating top-quality BMW leather varieties into the trims for the A and B pillars, seat trims, door sills and the side covers for the instrument panel. The vehicle manual is also produced inside the Manufaktur and bound in Criollo brown Merino leather. The BMW Individual M760Li inspired by Nautor’s Swan special model is just as impressive on the road. An M Performance TwinPower Turbo 12-cylinder petrol engine provides plenty of drive. A cubic capacity of 6.6 litres allows the engine to perform at 448kW/610hp and provides maximum torque of 800Nm. The high-performance engine lets the car accelerate from 0 to 100km/h in 3.7 seconds. In conjunction with the modern eight-gear Steptronic Sport transmission, the matchless characteristics of the V12 engine provide plenty of sporty yet controlled thrust. The innovative Executive Drive Pro chassis system also combines remarkable driving dynamism with maximum driving comfort. As you would expect from such a highquality car, the onboard technology is also state-of-the-art. Semi automated driving, touch display and BMW Gesture Control are just three of the technical highlights of this unique part of BMW’s history. The BMW Individual M760Li inspired by Nautor’s Swan debuted at the Frankfurt International Motor Show in September. October 2017 63

Brand Ranking Rise
MINI is a statement of personal style and inspires customers all over the world with constant reinvention through attractive products, innovation, authenticity and distinctive brand communications. This enthusiasm is reflected in the latest Best Global Brands ranking compiled by the global consultancy Interbrand. The value of the MINI brand rose once again this year to more than USD5 billion. The innovative premium manufacturer climbed to number 87 in the ranking – a major jump considering that in 2014 it had yet to break into the top 100. The strong growth in brand value stems from systematic implementation of the brand realignment announced in 2015. Design, authenticity and intrinsic value define the new brand identity, which is also reflected in the visual appearance and new tonality of communications.

The fleet includes one Range Rover Sport, one Range Rover Evoque, one Land Rover Discovery Sport and four All-New Discovery vehicles, each with its own strengths and unique characteristics. Euro Motors GM, Stephen Lay, says: “With the renewal of the fleet, LRE customers can now enjoy the immense power and capability of our 2017 models. An Environmental Pathway Car maker Hyundai is taking a leading role in the transition towards a more environmentally sustainable motor industry, by creating a practical path forward in moving from fossil fuels to electric vehicles that will suit a wide range of worldwide markets. While there is now a consensus in the motor industry that electric vehicles will dominate the future, Hyundai’s head of operations for Africa and the Middle East, Mike Song, says there is a tendency for companies to focus too heavily on a limited choice of technologies. As a result, the products in development may not be suitable for all markets, or all uses. Hyundai is taking a different approach. Instead of committing to one form of technology, the Korean company is now manufacturing models using four different approaches to electric power: fully electric, hybrid, plug-in and hydrogen fuel cell. The company has been testing various electrified drivetrains for more than 25 years, has been offering hybrids as part of its international product line-up since 2009, and was the first company to offer a production fuel-cell model when it released the Tucson FCEV in 2014. Last year it launched its first dedicated eco-car platform, the IONIQ. In another world first, the IONIQ is the only production car engineered for 64 October 2017
a selection of hybrid, plug-in or fully electric drivetrains. “Of the current technologies, hydrogen is the only one that matches the convenience of petrol or diesel for quick refuelling, but it requires a big investment in infrastructure, and is more expensive,” says Mike Song. “Fully electric vehicles need long periods of downtime to recharge their batteries, while hybrids offer reduced emissions vehicles rather than no emissions. “What we need to drive the transition is a diverse range of technologies to meet a diverse range of uses and budgets.” www.bahrainthismonth.com

Neil Young – Hitchhiker What’s the story?
Recorded over the course of one lazy, hazy day in Malibu in 1976, Hitchhiker was never bootlegged, or even spoken about. Neil Young first let its existence be known in 2014, when he mentioned a 1976 solo acoustic session recorded with long-time producer David Briggs that was “a complete piece”. Most of the songs from that complete piece drifted out in different versions over the years, but now the full session sees the light of day in 2017.
Worth a listen?
Although Young is correct when he claims Hitchhiker is a “complete piece” – it sustains a dusky sweetness from beginning to an end — it is certainly not a polished album. Often, it feels as if Young is singing with no intention of his music being heard by a wider audience, but the presence of Briggs at the board means this doesn’t sound like a ragged demo. Instead, Hitchhiker holds together as a mood piece, an album where Young slowly reckons with a new dawn after surviving a hectic mid-’70s. It is the epilogue to his Ditch Trilogy, the descent into darkness that began with 1973’s Time Fades Away and ended with 1975’s Tonight’s the Night, an album where the melancholy undercurrent never overwhelms the suggestion of cautious optimism. This delicate tone is what separates Hitchhiker from those works, with Young still not certain if he’s exorcised those demons, and that unease gives just enough complexity to the album’s soothing ebb and flow.
Verdict: A superb comeback shines bright.

The National – Sleep Well Beast
Tori Amos – Native Invader
The National never seem in a hurry to reach their destination, but there’s a sense of quiet urgency on Sleep Well Beast, their seventh album. Sleep Well Beast draws attention to itself through the occasional squall of noise (The System Only Dreams in Total Darkness) and rushed tempo (Turtleneck), but also through an expanded sonic palette. Electronics are used for texture and shade, vocal harmonies glide through the mix, pianos anchor a couple of tunes – all subtle gradients within The National’s recognisable formula, but they’re enough to give Sleep Well Beast a distinct character. While Sleep Well Beast offers more than its fair share of hushed moments – The National design their music to be lean-in listening.
A decade after the release of her most politically outspoken album, a reinvigorated Tori Amos once again takes aim at the state of the world on her 15th album, Native Invader. One of Amos’ tightest and most digestible efforts, it’s a standout in her late-era catalogue, featuring instant classics like the epic Reindeer King and the surprising thrill of Up the Creek. Native Invader was influenced by political turmoil on American soil – this time following the outcome of the 2016 presidential election. Romantic heartbreak aside, the most devastating personal moment arrives on Mary’s Eyes, about Amos’ mother, who was left unable to communicate after a stroke.

Jack Johnson – All the Light Above It Too Like the son of a surfer he is, Jack Johnson never makes any of his music sound hard, yet All the Light Above It Too, his seventh studio set, almost seems like it will drift away on the slightest breeze. Blame its lightness on Johnson’s determination to make this album a series of 10 barely dressed demos. Sometimes, this sparseness accentuates Johnson’s knack for tunes that sound like charming singalong ditties, and this deliberate skeletal crew also means that when a song gets a fuller arrangement, it grabs your attention.

Ready, Set, Cook! This restaurant in Juffair is inviting amateur chefs yet again to participate in its ever-popular cooking show.
76 October 2017
Kitchen kings and queens can start sharpening their knives as the registration commences for another season of the Italian MasterChef competition at Cucina Italiana, which is scheduled to be hosted in the first quarter of 2018. The award-winning Italian restaurant, located in Juffair, is in its fifth year of the widely liked cooking contest. It first started in 2013 and is now eagerly awaited by budding chefs around the island as their claim to fame. The establishment aims to boost local interest in the gastronomic art of authentic Italian cuisine and has been well received by the Italian Embassy in Bahrain. For the past two years, the Italian ambassador has supported the competition as the guest of honour. The upcoming event is open to all cooking enthusiasts who have not competed previously. Thirty-six contestants will be selected to battle for the crown as they show off their skills through a series of challenges. Last year, all participants were asked to prepare an Italian main course of their choice to become one of the 12 semi-finalists. They then had to create a dish using the ingredients from the mystery box. The top four finalists had a thrilling showdown and the top chef was awarded the coveted black apron, a trophy and an array of tantalising prizes.
Previous winners include Nadeen Kanaan from Jordan in the first year, Kevin Deneeke from USA in the second, Michella Calvaresi from Italy in the third and Paolo Emanuele Vallini from Italy last year. The champions have a way of making the process look easy but the culinary team is asking attendees to watch out for a plethora of surprises from up the executive chef’s sleeve to spice things up. The contestants will have to impress the panel of judges, who are local celebrities from the island’s culinary scene. Scores for each plate will be given based on taste, texture, presentation, authenticity, balance and portioning. Cucina Italiana is a homegrown eatery focusing on freshly cooked homestyle dishes in a uniquely designed restaurant that will transport guests to the heart of Italy. xposed wooden beams and accents punctuate the whitewashed interiors of Attic, beckoning guests to a relaxed yet sophisticated dining experience. The overall ambience of the restaurant is understated, which helps you to loosen up and sink into the comfortable seats, providing the perfect setting for delicious Mediterranean fare, which is just what my dining companion and I were eagerly anticipating. The menu, masterminded by none other than Greek culinary star Akis Petretzikis, is replete with gourmet staples and novel preparations such as moussaka and Beef Giouvetsi. As soon as the hot and cold appetisers arrived, I knew we were in for the real deal – they were rich, flamboyant and hearty. What’s a Grecian meal without tzatziki and eggplant salad? Both these dishes were our delicious prelude to the authentic flavours of Attic. While the Greek Meatballs are a signature starter, the Feta Cheese Pies are a surprising contradiction on the tongue, with the sharpness of the cheese, sweetness of the honey and the heat of the red chilli. Kadaifi Prawns were tender, parceled in crisp filo strings, served with strawberry dressing, and ringlets of fried www.bahrainthismonth.com
calamari arrived with a smear of saffron sauce. The essence of toasted black sesame seeds waft out first from the Spicy Tuna Tartare, followed by the acidity of the balsamic vinegar. Roasted papadums and edible petals with Greek yogurt give the dish a fusion twist. But the star of the table was most definitely the Flaming Cheese Saganaki. Melt-in-yourmouth cheese triangles enveloped in crunch were brought to the table, doused in Ouzo (aniseed flavoured aperitif) and set afire! The yellow-blue flames made the outside crispy and the inside heavenly. The rocket salad proved that healthy doesn’t have to be less tasty. Rocket leaves paired with the mild Manouri cheese, watermelon, walnuts and aged balsamic reduction is beautiful on the palate. After a brief breather, we were presented with the mains – an oval platter of Lamb Kleftiko. This rustic-looking, slow-braised shank of lamb was drenched in rich brown gravy and accompanied with the sweetness of capsicum, baby potatoes and Graviera cheese. The meat fell off the bone no sooner than our forks touched it. Elsewhere on our table, a grilled tentacle of octopus sat pretty on concentric semicircles of
fava bean puree. The freshness of parrot-green lemon oil and the delicately grainy texture of the fava elevated the taste of the meat many notches higher. Bursting at the seams, I secretly resolved that I’d only nibble on dessert, to not let the previous evening’s yoga class go to waste. But alas, such things at Attic are beyond human control. When the Sweet Greek Platter was laid before us, all I could muster was a feeble sigh of surrender before I dug into the decadence. The traditional Loukoumades – mini doughnuts in sticky honey-cinnamon syrup with walnuts and olive oil ice cream – was a pleasant first for me. The Galaktoboureko, a flaky shell filled with semolina custard and the Mastic Mille-feuille, took our senses by surprise. But, by far, the Greek Yogurt Cheesecake and the Chocolate Moelleux stole the show. The former was a light, low-calorie, protein-rich treat, apt for the health conscious, and the latter was a gorgeous chocolate fondant, done just right and oozing deliciousness. All in all, Attic is everything that it promises to be – honest to goodness Hellenic grub that brings people together in true Grecian style. October 2017 77

The dÊcor impresses with sleek leather seating, minimalist rose gold glass orb chandeliers, a strikingly artful mural and floor-to-ceiling windows with breathtaking views of the Manama skyline – all the elements add a touch of opulence and drama to the place. My dining partner and I took a seat near the window and scanned the shimmering city lights until the waiter came by to take our order. We were there to try the daily Carnivore Combo, which consists of a steak cooked to your preference, with either ribs or local tiger prawns. We went for one of each. A glass of smooth red Californian cabernet grape, incidentally named Carnivor, was poured for us. Our attendant then explained that an unlimited beverage package costs just BD5 additionally. Domain sommelier Chad greeted us soon after and elaborated on our drink, explaining its chocolatey, peppery composition and aroma. Our meal started with a plate of focaccia and pesto for appetisers. The condiment had a slightly bitter hint to complement the soft and flavourful bread. This was followed by a lettuce and tomato salad before the main course. We had no idea all this was included in the package. Two boards with big chunks of meat made their entrance even before being set on the table as their heady, meaty aromas wafted through the air. The plating of each dish was rustic, adding a nice touch to the experience. The ribs were perfectly charred and slightly crisp
with a rare heart lusciously infused with flavour, with a fine, fork-tender texture. The sirloin steak was also wonderfully marbled and cooked just right. Chef Joseph paid us a quick visit to explain how the USDA Black Angus meat is prepped for cooking. First, the rib meat marinates for 12 hours in celery, carrots, onions, different peppers, star anise and cinnamon sticks. Then, it is slow braised in its own liquid for eight hours, and is cooled straight after for five hours. The next step involves slow braising it for four hours at a temperature of 80 degree Celsius. Finally, it is set to rest for four hours before being sealed. The entire process takes around four days. Our jaws dropped when we heard this. To me, it tasted like the best protein I had ever bit into. Joseph also told us that the tiger prawns are caught locally, marinated in dill and garlic-infused olive oil before being cooked for 14 minutes on high and low heat. We finished the rest of our meal in silence, marvelling at the tastes we were experiencing. The food was hearty and memorable. The culinary team has everything down to a science, and the venue is perfect for any occasion. The carnivore promotion runs for BD19.800 per person. Call 16 000-000. www.bahrainthismonth.com

84 October 2017
Ramee Grand Hotel & Spa is honouring the Indian festivals of Navratri and Diwali with an exciting menu tailor-made for the occasion. Navratri is a big part of India’s cultural identity, and is celebrated with great splendour and gaiety for nine days in October and November. During this time, devotees fast all day and dance throughout the night with great enthusiasm and joy. The dancers wear bright, colourful clothes and move to hypnotic folk music, resulting in an audio-visual treat for bystanders. Diwali, also known as the ‘Festival of Lights’, is another big event on the calendar, filled with celebratory fireworks and prayers for prosperity and protection. Several speciality sweets are shared between family and friends to mark the day. Kumar Ashwani, director of sales and marketing at the hotel, describes this grand festive season as “a time when old and young look past their differences and come together to observe this auspicious time”. Executive chef Anurag Sinha has come up with an exciting menu for the hotel’s Indian restaurant, Rasoi. It is priced at BD10++ with soft drinks and timehonoured delicacies made with a twist by the culinary team. Every measure has been taken to ensure attention to detail. hope that this season brightens your lives and brings you a world of happiness.” The hotel is also the official hospitality partner for several major events being hosted throughout the rest of the year. LG SIGNATURE
Home Is Where The Tech-Art Is GEORGE F MIDDLETON There are very few times that I can remember being ‘blown away’ at a home appliances launch but that’s exactly what happened in Dubai, late August. Witnessing the LG SIGNATURE ultra-premium brand experience on stage at the Dubai Opera introduced discerning (and wealthy) consumers to a new dimension in state-of-the-art home appliance technology.
92 October 2017
The innovative and exquisitely designed LG SIGNATURE family consists of four products – the world’s thinnest and arguably most stunning OLED television (less than 4mm thick), which is mounted on magnets and takes the captivating viewing and listening experience to the next level; a sleek refrigerator with a beautiful InstaView Door-in-Door feature to keep food fresher for longer; a bold new black stainless steel washer and white all-in-one washer/dryer unit; and an intuitive air purifier designed to filter the air in any home and environment in order to protect your family from pollutants and allergens in the air. “Each of the products presented are designed with simple and efficient functionality in mind – from conception to the final user experience,” says Kevin Cha, president, LG Electronics, Middle East & Africa. “And whilst maintaining the brand’s modern, premium and artistic signature design, LG believes individuals residing within the region can experience the most visually astounding and beautiful home appliances turning their living spaces into highly functioning and visually stunning masterpieces.” LG SIGNATURE redefines the future of luxury home appliances and entertainment solutions. The simple world-class design philosophy, with discriminating attention to detail, eliminates unnecessary elements, thereby representing the ultimate in elegant simplicity.
The LG SIGNATURE OLED TV W LG SIGNATURE OLED TV W (77/65-inch), the winner of over 45 prestigious awards including the 2017 CES Best of Innovation Award, embodies breakthrough innovation in television technologies and exquisite premium design. The W7 series follows LG’s “less is more” philosophy, stripping away everything to emphasise the beauty of the screen alone. The W7’s sleek razor-thin profile makes the TV appear to be levitating in mid-air, adding to a sense of visual wonderment. W7 series models are less than 4mm thick when measured from the wall without any gap between the TV and the wall. The sense of immersion is completed through up-firing speakers with Dolby Atmos sound. The W7 series lives up to LG OLED TV’s unrivalled ability to reproduce the most lifelike images of any TV product. Additionally, it offers up to one billion possible colours and uses ULTRA Luminance technology to deliver greater brightness according to the content being displayed. The W7 series features Active HDR to render brighter scenes and greater shadow detail for HDR content. In addition, it supports multiple HDR formats, including Dolby Vision, HDR10, HLG (Hybrid Log Gamma). LG SIGNATURE Refrigerator The LG SIGNATURE refrigerator is both intuitive and revolutionary. LG has taken its award-winning Doorin-Door design one step further by adding the InstaView Door-in-Door feature that makes the Doorin-Door compartment transparent with two quick knocks. The transparent surface allows customers to see inside the refrigerator without having to open the door, thereby ensuring significant energy savings by limiting cold air loss.
LG SIGNATURE Refrigerator
www.bahrainthismonth.com
Even more futuristic is the new Auto Open Door feature which activates as a user approaches the refrigerator, allowing for quick and easy hands-free access. The LG SIGNATURE refrigerator is powered by LG’s Inverter Linear Compressor which automatically adjusts its cooling capacity based on conditions inside the compartment. It also generates less internal friction due to its unique design and is backed by a 10-year warranty. The LG SIGNATURE Washing Machine The unique-looking LG SIGNATURE washing machine is an advanced version of the LG TWINWash washer. The premium 24-inch front load washing machine is more durable, convenient and sophisticated than ever and features the unique pedestal TWINWash Mini under the main unit. The minimalistic design of the LG SIGNATURE washing machine is highlighted by the beautiful touch-enabled Quick Circle User Interface which is embedded in the glass door. Positioned at a 17-degree angle, the panel is easy to see when standing. The Push Open washing machine door can be opened with a slight push, even when the user’s hands are full. Meanwhile, the washer’s enamel coating not only gives it a sleek, sophisticated look, but also repels fingerprints and corrosion. The LG SIGNATURE washing machine comes equipped with LG’s proprietary Centum System which improves the washing machine’s durability and energy efficiency with an advanced suspension system. Noise emission in operation is greatly decreased because of the system which minimises the tub’s vibrations during a wash cycle. The LG SIGNATURE Air Purifier LG believes that nothing is more important than clean air. The LG SIGNATURE air purifier allows the air cleaning process to be a visual experience with its innovative transparent panel. Equipped with an advanced Watering Engine, this air purifier harnesses the power of water to filter out harmful chemicals and contaminants while quickly bringing the room to comfortable humidity levels. The unit is equipped with LG’s SIGNATURE Black Filter System, allowing consumers to reuse the filters for up to 10 years, saving money. While fine dust particles are totally invisible to the naked eye, customers can see the air quality of their indoor environment by simply glancing at LG’s Smart Indicator. Positioned on the control display, the indicator shows air quality with a colour scheme that is easy to read. Damaging substances like PM10, PM2.5 and even PM1.0 can be detected. Echoing the silhouette of the curvaceous case are 28 brilliant-cut diamonds crowned at both ends by a magnificent trio of a baguette cut flanked by two marquise diamonds. The Divine Time by Harry Winston can be worn as a pendant, with a Harry Winston tag set with a brilliant-cut diamond on an 18-karat white gold chain, or around the wrist on an openwork alligator leather strap, which is 94 October 2017
embellished with an additional 27 brilliant-cut diamonds on the ardillon buckle. The second new introduction is part of the Harry Winston The Ocean Collection, the Ocean Biretrograde Automatic 42mm which features a timepiece deck animated with a sophisticated double retrograde complication and a splash of diamonds that celebrates the legendary ‘King of Diamonds’. The new Ocean Biretrograde Automatic 42mm bears two of Harry Winston’s hallmark complications – excentred hours and minutes and a double retrograde display. As with all timepieces in the Ocean Collection, two arches, inspired by the grand arched doorway leading to Harry Winston’s Fifth Avenue Flagship Salon, embrace the crown. And, in celebration of Mr Winston’s lifelong passion for diamonds, a total of 367 brilliant-cut diamonds adorn the timepiece with light and sophistication. The dial mimics the curves and contours of the white gold case, with sweeping arcs and circles that dance to the light of 127 brilliant-cut diamonds. Set against an opalescent white mother-of-pearl dial, the excentered hours and minutes counter on the upper half of the dial is encircled by three rings of brilliant-cut diamonds. The two retrograde counters on the lower half of the dial – indicating the seconds and the day of the week – are also housed in semi-circular counters, with diamond borders and embellished with a wavy guilloché design, like tide marks in the sand. The principal counters are slightly elevated above the small diamond-set triangle, drawing the eye towards the circular date window. The hands are treated with a luminescent coating, the date window features a
magnifying glass and the timepiece is waterresistant to depths of 100 metres. With the iconic emerald-shaped Harry Winston logo crowning the scenery at 12 o’clock, the words ‘Swiss Made’ and ‘Automatic’ adorn the outermost part of the dial. The retrograde seconds function traces the arc from zero to thirty, and then jumps back in a counter-clockwise motion to zero. The days of the week counter advances every 24 hours and performs its sweeping jump on Sunday at midnight. To ensure that the various functions are precise, the timepiece is equipped with a first-class Swiss automatic movement, with the latest silicon technology. There are many advantages of using silicon in the balance spring. It is lighter than metal, impervious to magnetic fields and corrosion, shock-resilient, flexible and less prone to deformation. Visible through the sapphire crystal caseback, the movement and the 18-karat white gold rotor are beautifully handfinished and decorated with circular Côtes de Genève motifs, rhodium plating and circular graining – an exclusive feature of Harry Winston timepieces. The Ocean Biretrograde Automatic 42mm is presented on an elegant alligator strap in a new shade of blue. Fastened to the wrist with an 18-karat white gold ardillon buckle set with 44 diamonds, an 18-karat white gold folding clasp has been integrated for added comfort and security. www.bahrainthismonth.com
Gone are the days when you had to worry about damage to your mane due to colouring and bleaching. Toni & Guy brings you INNOluxe – a revolution in hair conditioning. For years, salons have felt restricted while using bleach and colour to give you the look you desire, but not anymore. This latest system, which uses protein technology, has created a unique set of treatments which work in combination with other products for all types of hair. This provides greater flexibility to get the look you want, while ensuring healthier, stronger locks. The pioneering, incredibly powerful repair solution transforms the way you bleach, colour and treat hair. INNOluxe gives stylists the freedom to achieve so much more for their clients while leaving their tresses in a better condition and significantly resilient as well. It pulls out all the stops to give today’s urbanites their most edgy and on-trend looks ever! INNOluxe offers three exciting new products to revolutionise the way salons use colour and deal with stressed-out manes. They create super-strong, reinforced sulphur bonds that work to mend any
damage during the colouring process, restoring maximum strength to strands, providing a broader spectrum of less harmful colouring options. It also delivers a full spectrum of colours that last longer. The innovation’s Aminobond Complex – a compound of multiple levels of low weight proteins and natural fruit extracts – builds stronger bridges between sulphur bonds, resulting in very quick and more effective recovery during and after treatments. It can be added to all brands of colour, although the most dramatic results are experienced when using it with bleach and highlights. Go get those blue, pink or blonde locks you’ve always wanted to try out! INNOluxe works fantastically well as a standalone treatment if you’d like to treat your tresses to frizz-free gorgeousness. It also results in incredible repair when used along with relaxers, perms and keratin treatments. By fortifying the inner structure of the hair, INNOluxe will ensure you never have to endure bad hair days again. Call 17 001-700. October 2017 97

Airplane Ears Explained
Painful ears during take-off and landing is a common phenomenon affecting many travellers. Consultant ENT surgeon, Dr Muhsen Salman, explains how to tackle the problem. Even though today’s aircraft are pressurised to minimise changes in air pressure, many passengers still suffer airplane ears (barotitis media), which causes partial hearing loss, pain and a stuffed-up feeling. Symptoms typically begin while the plane is descending and can persist for up to 30 minutes after landing. Cause As a plane climbs, cabin pressure lowers and the pressure in the middle ear reduces to match it. When the plane descends, the
www.bahrainthismonth.com
cabin pressure will reduce and you will feel the change in your eardrums which can cause discomfort until your ears equalise. The Eustachian tube, which normally drains secretions from the middle ear into the throat, exchanges air between the ears and nose, but when there is a pressure differential, air may get trapped in the middle ear. The tube compensates by allowing a little more air into or out of the ear, but this may be difficult as the differences in air pressure create a vacuum that pulls the eardrum inward. It stretches (causing pain) and is unable to vibrate naturally (which impairs hearing). Treatments • Swallow several times or blow your nose gently, chew gum or
yawn – all help to open the Eustachian tube. • Squeeze the nostrils shut with your thumb and forefinger, inhale through your mouth and then attempt to force the air back into the nose – you should feel your ears pop. • Use a nasal decongestant spray or pill an hour before landing. • Try small silicone rubber ear plugs, marketed under the name EarPlanes, which have a filter that equalises the effects of cabin airpressure changes.
Dr Muhsen Salman
If your ears fail to open or if pain persists several hours after landing and if you fly frequently and have persistent ear pain, consult an ENT doctor. Call 77 310-000.

Sleep Apnoea Simplified men and 16 inches or greater in women. • Having large tonsils, a large tongue or a small jawbone. • Nasal obstruction due to a deviated septum, allergies or sinus problems. • Having a family history of sleep apnoea. • Gastroesophageal reflux disease. • Alcohol, sedatives and tranquilisers may also promote sleep apnoea by relaxing throat muscles. • Smokers are three times more likely to experience sleep apnoea. • Heart disorders such as atrial fibrillation or atrial septal defects. • Stroke.
Dr Sonal Jagtap
Pulmonology specialist Dr Sonal Jagtap explains the basics of sleep apnoea, a condition that can have serious consequences.
During the past few years there has been a growing awareness regarding sleep-related disorders. Sleep apnoea syndrome, more commonly known as OSA, has now been linked to a number of serious disease conditions. What is sleep apnoea? Sleep apnoea is a serious disorder that occurs when a person stops breathing while asleep. During these episodes the body does not get enough oxygen. There are two types of sleep apnoea: • Obstructive sleep apnoea (OSA): The more common and more widely known of the forms of apnoea, is caused by a blockage of the airway, due to collapse of the soft tissues of the back of the throat during sleep. • Central sleep apnoea: Is the other type of disorder, where the airway does not get blocked but the brain fails to signal the muscles to breathe, due to instability in the respiratory control centre. Risk factors for sleep apnoea include: • Males are more commonly affected; however, women are not spared the consequences. • Being overweight is a definite risk, but thin people can also suffer. • Those aged over 40 are at increased risk. However, sleep apnoea can affect anyone at any age, and there is a growing incidence of the condition amongst children and adolescents. • Having a large neck size – 17 inches or greater in
100 October 2017
If left untreated, sleep apnoea can result in a number of health problems, including: • High blood pressure. • Stroke. • Heart failure, irregular heartbeats and heart attacks. • Diabetes. • Depression. • Worsening of ADHD. • Headaches. • Poor performance in everyday activities, such as at work and school, motor vehicle crashes, and academic underachievement in children and adolescents. • Increased incidence of cancer has been noted in patients having sleep-related stress. Common sleep apnoea symptoms include: • Waking up with a very sore or dry throat. • Loud snoring. • Occasionally waking up while sleeping with a choking or gasping sensation. • Sleepiness or lack of energy during the day. • Sleepiness while driving. • Morning headaches. • Restless sleep. • Forgetfulness, mood changes. • Recurrent awakenings or insomnia. If you have symptoms of the condition, your doctor may ask you to have a sleep apnoea test, called a polysomnogram, which electronically transmits and records specific physical activities while you sleep. Sleep apnoea is a chronic condition that requires long-term management. The earlier it is diagnosed, the better the chances of not developing complications and the easier it is to remedy the situation. Curb the Pain An expert from this well-known hospital sheds light on a common age-related disorder.
Dr Sahar Saad
If your bones and joints ache regularly and affect your day to day activities, you might have arthritis, says Dr Sahar Saad, rheumatology consultant at the Royal Bahrain Hospital. She explains that the term is not a single disease, but is used to describe around 200 rheumatic ailments that affect the joints and connective tissue. The most common type is osteoarthritis – a condition in which the human bones become fragile or brittle. It occurs more frequently in older people. Other related rheumatic conditions include gout and fibromyalgia, which is most common among women. Symptoms include pain, swelling, stiffness and decreased range of motion. They can be mild, moderate or severe, and may stay the same for years or progress over time.
Leaving them untreated can result in chronic pain, inability to do day-to-day activities, difficulty to walk, or permanent joint damage. In addition, some types of arthritis also affect the lungs, kidneys, eyes and heart. As with any condition, it is best to treat it early to yield the best results. In most cases, treatment is often delayed as patients fail to recognise the aforementioned symptoms. It can be diagnosed by a rheumatology specialist who uses a physical examination, blood tests and imaging scans to help determine the type of arthritis and chooses the best remedy. Dr Saad recommends seeking a medical opinion, should joint pain persist for four to six weeks. This, in turn, will enable an early prognosis and treatment to prevent joint damage and deformities, to maintain a good quality of life. Safeguarding Your Heart The expert from one of Bahrain’s most renowned healthcare facilities gives a brief on coronary disease and how one can keep a tab on one’s ticker. Dr Sonny Jacob, specialising in internal medicine and cardiology at American Mission Hospital, observes that cardiovascular disease (CVD), once thought to be a disorder afflicting older people, is now prevalent among the middle-aged and the young. Though it usually manifests in adulthood, the process of atherosclerosis (fatty deposit or plaque that builds up inside the arteries) can begin as early as childhood. The term CVD includes: - Coronary heart disease, affecting the arteries supplying blood to this organ’s muscles, resulting in varied forms of heart attack. - Cerebrovascular disease, affecting the arteries supplying blood to the brain, resulting in stroke. - Peripheral vascular disease, affecting the
arteries supplying blood to the limbs. - Aortic atherosclerosis and aneurysm, affecting major arteries carrying fresh blood from the heart. The main risk factors include metabolic aspects (high cholesterol, high blood pressure, obesity and diabetes), modifiable risk factors (unhealthy diet, smoking, sedentary lifestyle), a family history of heart attack or stroke in parents or siblings aged less than 50 years, and psychosocial factors (depression and perceived stress). There are multiple cardiovascular risk assessment scores for detecting a patient’s 10-year risk of developing CVD. The parameters used are age, gender, total cholesterol, HDL (good) cholesterol, systolic blood pressure, diabetes and smoking. Patients with the above risk factors need detailed evaluation along with lifestyle modification. With its vast reach and popularity as a frequent flyer programme, partnering with Gulf Air’s FalconFlyer programme is a strategic tieup for us and will increase our brand exposure globally as well as in our top source markets in the Middle East.” Gulf Air chief commercial officer, Ahmed Janahi, welcomes the agreement, saying: “Gulf Air’s FalconFlyer programme offers a host of exciting privileges and benefits to members and we are continually working to expand our network of partner hotels in order to make our programme as rewarding as possible. In line with this, our partnership with Swiss-Belhotel International gives our valued members the opportunity to earn miles during their stay at any of the participating Swiss-Belhotels.”
The United Nations World Tourism Organisation (UNWTO) has chosen Bahrain as a member of its Executive Council. The Kingdom, represented by the Bahrain Tourism and Exhibitions Authority (BTEA) will be part of the council for the period 2018-2021. This selection comes as a result of the BTEA’s efforts towards developing the tourism sector on a local level, as well as the Kingdom’s capability to represent the Middle East region in terms of tourism developments. The announcement took place during the 22nd session of the World Tourism Organisation General Assembly, held in China in September. The UNWTO was established in 1925 and is based in the Spanish capital of Madrid. It is concerned with countries’ political affairs in terms of tourism and produces statistics on tourism demand and supply worldwide. Its membership includes 145 countries, comprises six regions, and 350 Affiliate Members representing the private sector, educational institutions, tourism associations and local tourism authorities. The World Tourism Organisation’s Executive Council is considered the world’s top tourism executive body with 32 members representing the six regions of the world.

Sept 22 – Oct 21
Money spent on a holiday or recent home improvements will leave your bank balance feeling lightweight and this could have a negative knock-on effect in other areas of your life. You may find, if you are living with someone, the argument quota rises and the pressures put upon you by children will not alleviate the situation. All in all, things could get to a heated state and you will need to have your thoughts in order and your feet firmly on the ground. This is no time for you to start drifting off to fantasy island in the hope that ignoring what’s going on will make it go away. Don’t be an ostrich and bury your head in the sand or you will regret it later. SCORPIO October 22 – November 21 It looks like the worst of your conflicts from last month are behind you but that doesn’t mean it is all plain sailing into October for many of you. There is still a lot of work to be done to get things back to the way they used to be and you are sure to have to twist a few arms and be at your most accommodating before you can embrace a full return to normality. When the dust has settled, it might be a good idea to analyse what led you to where you were so that you don’t revisit that place again. You might be surprised that a young man rests at the heart of much of it! Card of the Month — The Eight of Cups
SAGITTARIUS November 22 – December 21
Underneath all the disguises and confused emotions lurk your true feelings about your past – a subject that in most cases you have kept very well hidden until now. However, someone you’ve chosen to confide in may finally help you come to terms with what has for so long haunted your thoughts. Certain demons we carry with us all our lives simply because we do not possess the courage to confront and exorcise them. In October, you will be given the opportunity to do just that, so, no matter how much it might hurt, grasp this chance with enthusiasm. The number 9 will hold a special key to ambition and success in your preferred field of work, so look out for it when it surfaces. Card of the Month — The Moon 110 October 2017
CAPRICORN December 22 – January 21 You cannot always satisfy everyone around you and decisions you will be forced to make in October are bound to upset someone affected by the implications of your actions. What you need to do as a person is accept this rather than being concerned with keeping the peace. You have had a rough time emotionally and consequently you may be thinking you deserve a better deal. Life is not just about sacrifice for the sake of others and on occasions it is important to be selfish. After all, without sparing time for yourself and keeping your own needs satisfied how can you expect others to love you and understand you? Things are moving up for you, so live a little for yourself rather than anyone else. Card of the Month — The Tower AQUARIUS January 22 – February 21
Money that you put aside some time ago will mature and offer a good return that you should now consider cashing in. Don’t allow any element of greed to creep into your thinking – just get out while you’re ahead. On the relationship front, decisions made in September will now be having a strong influence on your thinking and you could find yourself fighting back the tears if the outcome was not as positive as you would have wanted. It all goes to illustrate that life sometimes has a cruel streak – giving with one hand and then taking with the other. Card of the Month — The Four of Wands
PISCES February 22 – March 20
Your star sign is renowned for its affection and generosity of spirit. However, this month you will be accused of hurting the feelings of someone close to you by not identifying exactly what you want from a relationship. Still, doubts introduced into your thoughts by someone who has an ulterior motive to disrupt you are making you think twice over long-term relationship plans. Whilst such intrusiveness is unnecessary, remember no one can put things in your head, so stand by your gut feeling. Love cannot be judged with reason or logic. What you feel is all that counts. Card of the Month — The Six of Wands
ARIES March 21 – April 20
True romance creeps slowly into your life this October as you seek to occupy yourself elsewhere. In fact, it may come as such a surprise that you could be lost for words initially since the person who has amorous intentions towards you is not someone you would have expected to take an interest. Still, once the emotions are out in the open, there is no sense in holding back – providing you want to! For those of you who have often wondered if there is such a thing as true love, this could turn out to be it! Taurus is most likely to lead the chase but watch out also for a shy Sagittarian who has more than a passing interest. It seems at long last that the pains of past romantic failures are truly behind you. Card of the Month — The Eight of Wands
TAURUS April 21 – May 20 The Four of Pentacles has very strong links with your sign and the omens for you across much of October remain positive. Many of you will return to the workplace refreshed from holiday and ready to approach new and exciting challenges with renewed optimism and invention. This will be particularly evident on the 12th when you impress others in your company with your views, and your comments will be noted and appreciated. On the romance front, you could find yourself attracted to a work colleague you hadn’t really noticed before – but this could be more about problems at home than genuine interest. Card of the Month — The Four of Pentacles www.bahrainthismonth.com
advertisers index GEMINI May 21 – June 20
You will be in your element this month as certain factors come together to return some balance to your life, which had been particularly hectic since July. However, this ‘more positive’ state is only likely if you are honest and to a certain extent courageous enough to take a difficult emotional situation in hand and finally lay it to rest. Do this and your mind and life in general will be peaceful and trouble free, especially where family and close relationships are concerned. On the financial front, you are also due a little good fortune and this may come in the shape of an unexpected bonus at work that boosts your income at the last minute and may even have you thinking of a short break abroad. Card of the Month — The Nine of Wands
CANCER June 21 – July 20
If you were worried that this year was not turning out as expected, maybe you need worry no more. This October your faith in the world, and in particular your life, could once again be restored. Property problems from August will be pretty much resolved and the light at the end of the tunnel is bright and will shine on you by the middle of the month. There is a positive aura surrounding you and this will inspire others who find your renewed optimism so infectious. A lady of past significance will reappear on the 17th, sparking a row considered long forgotten and blotting an otherwise perfect copybook for this month. Card of the Month — The Wheel of Fortune
VIRGO August 22 – September 21
Money can always be a challenge for your sign, mainly because whilst you can excel at making it, you are never that prudent when spending it. Your shopping habits can be impulsive and often eccentric, to say the least, and some of you would do well to seek advice for the future on how to keep hold of more of the money you make. Try to rein yourself in when it comes to making impressions and remember that ‘splashing the cash’ for the sake of popularity very rarely brings you genuine friendships or relationships. There is more to you than that and you need to talk up what lies inside. Card of the Month — The Knight of Pentacles

This month is going to see you pulling out all the stops as you endeavour to get a long overdue task completed, which in turn will assist you in moving your career to the next level. For too long now you have been operating under a culture of acceptance and this does not fit well with your personality. You need to be true to yourself and worry less about what others might think and more about what makes you happy. On the family front, news of a relative falling sick will galvanise some of you into taking control of a situation that needs leadership but you could end up with more than you bargained for.
