ARABIAN CRICKET CARNIVAL (ACC) T-20 (2017) When? September 1-9 Event? Shop and Win Venue? Seef Mall – Muharraq and Seef E Visit www.seefmall. com.bh Dilhara Fernando
When? September 27-October 6 Event? Cricket Venue? Bahrain National Stadium Held under the patronage of His Highness Shaikh Khalid bin Hamad Al Khalifa, First Deputy President of the Supreme Council for Youth and Sports, Bahrain Cricket Centre and KHK MMA Bahrain, in collaboration with Z Events and Entertainment, and Global Herald Sports Event, announces the biggest cricketing event in Bahrain – the Arabian Cricket Carnival (ACC) T-20 (2017). This fun-filled event aims to bring together communities and highlight cricket in the Kingdom. ACC T-20 gives visitors the opportunity to meet international cricketers and famous Bollywood celebrities (to be announced soon) as well as, of course, the fun of watching cricket. Bahrain Brave Hearts, Kuwait Crusaders, Oman Avengers, Dubai Destroyers, Emirates Hurricane and Arab Rangers are the participating teams. Each will include four international cricketers. Dilhara Fernando, Ricardo Powell, Johan van der Wath, Justin Kemp, Monty Panesar, Pedro Collins, Brett Hutton, Alex George Wakely, Rusty Theron, Davy Jacobs and Leon Johnson are some of the big-name stars playing alongside the GCC teams. Sri Lankan Dilhara Fernando has played in tests, one day internationals and T20Is in an international arena. He is a right-handed pace bowler and was a key member for the 2007 and 2011 ICC Cricket World Cup runnerup teams. Ricardo Lloyd Powell is a West Indian 20 September 2017
cricketer from Jamaica. He represented the Jamaican national team as well as the Trinidad and Tobago national team from 1997 to 2005. South African Johan van der Wath is an attacking right-handed batsman who usually bats in the lower middle order. He is also an aggressive right-arm medium-fast bowler. Adept at bowling slower balls and cutters, capable of hitting quick runs down the order, and athletic in the field, he possesses the qualities of the quintessential T20 cricketer and it was in this format that he achieved most of his success. Justin Kemp is a former South African right-handed batsman and a right-arm medium-fast bowler. Despite his international career meeting a premature end, Kemp has been a key player for Cape Cobras in domestic cricket. He also represented Chennai Super Kings in 2010 after severing ties with the rebel ICL. Monty Panesar is an English international cricketer who currently plays for Northamptonshire. A left-arm spinner, he made his test debut in 2006 against India in Nagpur. He has also played for the Lions in South Africa. West Indian Pedro Collins is one of the very few left-handed seam bowlers who have had a chance to represent the West Indies cricket team. His bowling also is more dependent upon tidiness of line and length than the usual hit-thedeck kind of bowlers who have dominated Caribbean cricket. Brett Alan Hutton is an English righthanded batsman who bowls right-arm medium pace. He made his first-class debut for Nottinghamshire against the Marylebone Cricket Club in the Champion County match at the start of

Alex George Wakely was picked for the England under-19s tour of Sri Lanka in 2006-07, he scored England’s only century of the tri-nation series with 108 from 140 balls against Sri Lanka. On October 1, 2007 he was selected as England under-19s captain for the 2008 World Cup Juan ‘Rusty’ Theron is a former South African cricketer. He played for the Chevrolet Warriors, the Rajasthan Royals in the IPL and the South Africa national team. He is a right-arm fast bowler and bats right-handed. He retired from South African domestic cricket on October 8, 2015. South African Davy Jacobs is a firstclass cricketer for the Warriors, having previously played for the Eagles cricket team. He is a right-handed batsman and has made over 3,000 first-class runs at an average above 40 and a highest score of 218. Leon Rayon Johnson captained the West Indies in the 2006 U-19 Cricket World Cup in Sri Lanka. In the 2007-08 domestic season he scored 427 runs at an average of 42.70 from six matches for Guyana in the Carib Beer Series. The tournament will be televised live on Sony TV and some of the Bollywood celebrities will also perform. There will be food stalls, a kids’ fun zone and more attractions to be announced soon. REMYA AND EXPERTISE MANAGEMENT ENTERTAINMENT GALORE
Serani
Party time at Coral Bay
There are exciting times on the cards with a change of management at some of the island’s favourite dining and entertainment venues. The much-loved Coral Bay, long known for its beachside DJ events and pool parties as well as the dining venues Fish Mania and La Taverna, has been taken over jointly by Remya and Expertise Management, owned and operated by Madan and Sha. The venture will be run under the aegis of industry veteran and fitness freak Madan, who has previously been involved with venues such as Cocoon, Wranglers and Champs. He says: “It’s still owned by Bahrain business tycoon Akram Miknas, chairman of Promoseven. He just wanted one group to take over so he would not have to shoulder the stress of everyday management of the property.” Spectacular happenings organised by Miami Events Bahrain, with support from the Kingdom’s tourism industry, will showcase many artists from the US, Africa and Europe, and Madan Perattur sees this as the start of a series of high-profile musical appearances aimed at raising the venue’s profile and putting it back on track. On September 1 there will be an off-thechart extravaganza featuring Maurizio Colella, better known as EDX, who has made a name for himself on the international EDM stage, featuring in the world’s finest clubs and festivals to crowds in excess of 60,000 – 30 September 2017
from Miami to Los Angeles, Las Vegas to New York, São Paolo to Rio de Janeiro and Seoul to Taipei. This chart-topping Switzerland-based DJ/ producer has worked with some of the biggest names in music, including Axwell, Benny Benassi, Kelis, Deadmau5, Armand Van Helden, Bob Sinclar and many others. His remixes have been consistently featured on various DJ charts such as the DMC Buzz, Cool Cuts and Beatport, and he was even ranked in the TOP 3 of Beatport’s Best Progressive House Artists alongside Deadmau5 and Eric Prydz. On September 8, Coral Bay will play host to the island’s biggest Pool and Beach Festival, featuring Jamaican reggae fusion and dancehall artist Serani best known for his work with Sean Paul and the 2010 single No Games. This event, which will include a host of topflight DJs, is described as a clash of the biggest genres in music, hip-hop/R&B vs reggae/dancehall. Food fans visiting Coral Bay can look forward to delicious gourmet delicacies with a wider range of tastes being added to the fish menu, which is due to relaunch featuring surf and turf, keeping the delicious fish side of its offering but adding top-quality meats to the mix. The company also manages Torino in Adliya where DJ Whoo Kid, who’s signed to G-Unit Records and mixed the much-hyped recent reunion of 50 Cent and G-Unit, will be paying a return visit in September. Torino is a fabulous

steak house and is also home to one of the best ladies’ nights around so look out for more details of further upcoming performances. The recently opened Yard House, at the Diva Hotel, is a high-energy, themed, speciality American sports bar and restaurant in Juffair, which promises great fun, exemplary service and a wonderful atmosphere. There’s also an extensive selection of local mocktails and more than 10 wall-to-wall big HD flat-screen TVs that capture the energy of a sports stadium, as well as a dart board and pool table. The venue will soon be introducing live band performances so watch out for the latest news. Luxx Lounge at the Panorama Hotel is another member of the stable, which is due to host an official launch party at the end of September. The ambassador presents his credentials to His Majesty King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa
HE Nur Syahrir Rahardjo
is Excellency is familiar with both the Kingdom and the wider region. He says: “My first diplomatic posting, from 1989 to 1992, was in Kuwait as head of the economic section. We also covered both Bahrain and Qatar. The first time I came here was in 1990 and I can hardly recognise it – though I remember the Bab Al Bahrain. There has been lots of development since then; it’s very impressive and I like it.” After studying international relations at university, His Excellency joined the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in 1984. He began his career in Kuwait and was posted to Greece from 1994 to 1998 and San Francisco from 2001 to 2005. Surinam from 2010 to 2014 was his first posting as ambassador and he has always been engaged in economic affairs. Having arrived in Bahrain just a few months ago, the ambassador says his first impressions [this time around] are favourable, adding: “I am surprised by how very friendly the Bahraini people are and I feel very welcome.” The island’s Indonesian community is estimated at around 10,000 people but only about half that number are registered. “I believe some have come from other Gulf countries illegally and are working in the nonformal sector. Less than 1,000 are in the skilled

sector,” says His Excellency. “This is my big problem and I’m addressing it with the help of the LMRA and the police. Indonesia has already stopped some categories of workers coming to the Gulf but they still manage to come here illegally – it’s people-smuggling in some cases – we are working with the Bahraini authorities. They are being very helpful and I expect ever-closer cooperation in the future.” The embassy also runs a shelter, which is currently home to 14 women who have sought diplomatic assistance. “Sometimes it’s a question of helping with paperwork, sometimes it’s in seeking a settlement from their employer so they can go home,” says the ambassador. He is fully committed to helping in any way possible. The cordial relations also extend to commerce, where the current figure for trade between the two countries stands at over USD100 million per year – Indonesia exports USD41 million to Bahrain, in things such as vehicle parts, electronics, textiles and furniture, and imports USD61 million, in oil and aluminium. His Excellency says: “There is a lot of room for this figure to grow and one of the areas in which we hope to enhance relations is tourism. I have invited Gulf Air to launch a
flight to Indonesia, which would allow it to pick up the Umra passengers going to Saudi Arabia, and I am hopeful of starting discussions on this.” He adds that his ambition is to further boost ties, saying: “My goals include enhancing bilateral relations and trade and also increasing high-level cooperation. I’m hoping for senior level visits from the Indonesian Ministry of Defence and chief of staff for Bidec 2017 and also, towards the end of this year, I hope to welcome the Foreign Minister for the Manama Dialogues. Next month, there will be a ministerial visit by the SME Ministry [small and medium enterprises] at which we will share experiences. Also next month there is a trade expo in Jakarta, to which I have invited a number of business people. “Further, on investment, we are offering some projects to Bahrain. We have a lot of raw material aluminium in Indonesia and we’re inviting Bahraini businesses to exploit that.” Of his time in Bahrain, the ambassador concludes: “Hopefully I can do some good here, of course with the support of my Bahraini colleagues. My aim is to enhance and increase bilateral relations which, in the future, I hope will be stronger and stronger. And my message to everyone is ‘Visit Indonesia’.” www.bahrainthismonth.com

TELLING TALES! APPLE SHARMA The award-winning documentary film, Asir: Sand in an Hourglass, captures a forgotten culture. The man behind the camera, filmmaker and photographer Michael Bou-Nacklie, shares his passion for storytelling.
T
he zeal for narrating untold tales has been a common denominator throughout Swiss-Lebanese Michael’s career, from being a journalist to writer, editor, blogger, photographer and cinematographer. “This sounds very trite but I’ve always been drawn to storytelling and that’s what got me into journalism,” says Michael. “I was particularly fascinated with Saudi Arabia – I had lived there as a kid in high school. Something about it not being accessible to the rest of the world really appealed to me from a storytelling perspective.” Enraptured by the secluded region of Asir in Saudi Arabia, Michael wanted to depict the effect of globalisation on the nation and the toll it has taken on the history and culture of a dwindling tribal community in the southwest. “Saudi is a really young country – it’s 100 years old on paper – but because of the rapid expansion so much of the history has just been left by the wayside,” he says. His exploration gave birth to a series of images that turned into a book and a film of the same name – Asir: Sand in an Hourglass – which will be screened on September 28 at La Fontaine Centre of Contemporary Art. “I’m always fascinated by stories of people who don’t have a voice,” Michael explains. “The people of Asir are completely different. They’re very proud of who they are. They reject a lot of the mainstream Saudi culture because they’ve been forgotten for a long time. The tribes still live in remote areas. The only way to get to them is through mountains and river beds, and it rains a lot in there so you can’t access the areas. “My main impetus for doing this book and film was I wanted to talk about this place because it’s so interesting. It’s a real shame that there’s this rich history that in the next 20 years could 38 September 2017

either change to the point where it’s substantially unrecognisable or it just vanishes, and I’m afraid it’s going to be the latter.” Asir was the winner of the Hollywood International Independent Documentary Awards last year. “I also won an honourable mention from the SF Independent Film Festival,” Michael adds graciously. “To be nominated and win awards; it’s a good feeling. I don’t like my work generally but I enjoyed this film because it’s just a different story and nobody really tells it.” His company, Fancy Hat Multimedia, also produces other films which are mostly nonfiction, including corporate documentaries. Of his ongoing projects he says: “I’m working on one now about human trafficking and another about, not so much being a refugee, but being stateless – people who’ve had their identities taken away from them for whatever reason. “I’m just drawn to storytelling and not in a way that I want to be the next Martin Scorsese. There’s something about a well-told, true story – hearing someone tell their own story – for me that’s very interesting. My problem with a lot of discourse is that no one is listening to anyone – they’re just kind of talking at each other. The difference with documentaries like mine, I think, is it’s people sitting and saying what their life is about – you can’t argue with that.” Michael drew inspiration in his younger days from Discovery Channel and National Geographic, so it comes as no surprise that some of his biggest heroes are renowned photographers David Alan Harvey, Ernesto Bazan and Amy Toensing. Some of his favourite films include The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou by Wes Anderson and Baraka, a non-narrative documentary filmed over 10 years.
Giving a word of advice to aspiring young filmmakers, he says: “Just find something you like and learn out more about it, and then try and make it something that’s universal.” Michael loves travelling, hanging out with his dog – a Great Dane named Sheba – and enjoys being based here and the spirit of Bahrain. With a genuine passion for giving people good stories, he’s found another one close to home – one that involves Bahraini cowboys – watch this space! www.bahrainthismonth.com

Stephen Lay
BRIGHT NEW HORIZONS CHARLIE HOLDING The new general manager at this prominent car dealership talks about his plans to drive the brand forward.
S
tephen Lay has taken the reins at Jaguar Land Rover (JLR) Bahrain and he’s determined to implement small changes that will make a big difference. With a background that is predominantly premium, he is no stranger to luxury marques and his vast experience – especially with JLR – is definitely something he’s drawing on. Stephen is familiar with the region and previously worked in Saudi Arabia as the sales director for BMW. After the birth of his son, he decided to move back to his native UK but, before he left, a chance encounter set him on a new path. A friend offered him a test drive in his swanky new Range Rover Sport. “I wasn’t really that keen,” Stephen explains. “But it turned out being great and, at that point, I knew I wanted to work with the brand. It wasn’t really based on one test drive, to be fair, I kept his car for a week after that!” Upon his return to the UK, Stephen took a job with Jaguar Land Rover in Suffolk. He spent the next three years learning more about the brand 40 September 2017
and working his way up the ranks before relocating to a larger, more prominent facility. When he got the call from Euro Motors, it was simply an offer he couldn’t refuse. “Bahrain has been my destination of choice in the Middle East for a while so it was the right brand, the right destination. It was everything I was looking for,” he says. Since taking on his new role, Stephen has wasted no time getting to work and has hired team members from overseas as well as promoting locals. “We just invested in a new management team, promoted Bahrainis from within to roles that didn’t exist before, and we’ve hired new technicians too. It’s all about improvement and making sure we’ve got the right people,” Stephen says. “I’ve brought a new service manager from the UK – he’s got lots of experience working with VVIPs and so we’re bringing that level of customer service to Bahrain. We are very much aligned when it comes to our thoughts on customer service and how we run our teams
and, for me, that is where we need to start.” Perhaps the biggest change on the agenda is the implementation of the JLR Customer First system. Stephen explains: “Jaguar Land Rover is all about being transparent and easy to do business with, giving customers a much better, more personalised experience. We need to be honest and up front rather than over promising and under delivering. We want to make small, realistic changes, taking the people we have and developing them and making sure our team is the best it can be. I’m really excited about the next 12 months – there’s loads to do and we have exciting new products to launch.” When it comes to his experience with Euro Motors, Stephen says the support he has received from the management makes all the difference. He explains: “Euro Motors is also going through a period of change. Mr Majid Al Zayani is the new MD and he’s been really supportive in making the changes and driving the business forward.” www.bahrainthismonth.com

interview
Debbie at the Spectre movie premiere
1. Please tell us a little about yourself – how long have you been with the company and what is your previous experience? From a young age, I have had a passion for cinema and I’ve worked with Novo Cinemas since July 2013. Before my time at Novo, I was based in Bahrain working at Bahrain Exhibition and Convention Authority and had a career in MICE [meetings, incentive, conferences and events] tourism and hospitality but, as both industries focus on guest experiences, it made moving into the entertainment industry a natural progression. There’s a perfect synergy between tourism and film entertainment and the similarities across industries became very apparent. 2. What does your role as CEO entail? As a leader, it is important to never lose sight of our goals and how to achieve them. The answer is always based on teamwork since it is impossible to run a profitable business alone. I believe that the key to success is understanding how to lead, teach, motivate and encourage your team every step of the way. That is the management style I have consistently adopted and it has always worked for me. While there are many aspects to being a successful CEO, I believe that investing in the most valuable asset – employees – is incredibly important. A mentoring approach helps the team develop within the business, as well as in their own career journey. 3. When did Novo Cinemas launch in Bahrain? How many screens does it have? Novo opened in Bahrain in 2014 at Seef Mall Muharraq with 14 screens, including an IMAX [digital cinema projection system], the first of its kind in Bahrain, and a seven-star VIP screen. 4. What is Novo’s unique selling point – what makes it stand out from the competition? What products and services does it offer? 42 September 2017
Debbie Stanford-Kristiansen
BEHIND THE SCENES APPLE SHARMA Debbie Stanford-Kristiansen, CEO of one of the largest cinema companies in the region, talks about her role at the helm of an exciting entertainment industry player. Since its inception, Novo Cinemas has been one of the market leaders, opening its doors in 2004, as the first IMAX in the region at the Ibn Battuta Mall Megaplex in Dubai and now in Bahrain too. Since then, the brand has strived to be a pioneer in the cinema space through introducing a range of products and services, including seven-star cinema experiences, healthy food and beverage options, as well as alternative content, such as screenings of El Clásico football, live boxing matches from Las Vegas, and a Bolshoi Ballet series of performances. We currently have an extensive network of 154 screens and 23,000 seats in 15 locations across the GCC, with five dedicated IMAX screens in the region, including the largest IMAX with laser in the MENA region. 5. What is the company’s focus in the Kingdom for this year? Are there plans of expansion, in terms of services or branches? We’ve had a very busy 12 months at Novo with exciting developments across several of our locations and more in the pipeline for 2018. We have seven seven-star locations across our network, with more coming this year. Novo Cinemas’ ongoing expansion will see its numbers grow to over 220 screens in more than
22 locations by 2018. During all of these new endeavours, we’re still happily hosting corporate events at our cinemas – product launches, annual meetings, et cetera – as well as school visits to enjoy the educational catalogue of documentaries available in our IMAX screens. 6. What upcoming new releases can the audience in Bahrain expect for September? We will be showing all the latest Hollywood and Bollywood blockbusters including sci-fi adventure film Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets, classic horror remake IT and, in IMAX, actioncomedy Kingsman: The Golden Circle. 7. Apart from work, what are you most passionate about in life? Aside from work, my family and I are constantly on the move. We go to the movies at least twice a week, go out for dinner as a family, travel and explore new places. We also regularly commute back and forth to Bahrain to catch up with our daughter, Georgia, and the many friends we have there – both Bahraini and expats. 8. What is your all time favourite film? My favourite movie is La La Land – I have already seen it six times! www.bahrainthismonth.com

C
anadian national Desmond Acheson is now at the helm of the property having recently taken over as general manager of Ramada Manama City Centre Bahrain. Set in a prime location, the hotel boasts 140 sizeable rooms and suites, a spa, a gym, an authentic Reem Al Bawadi Levantine restaurant – with a patio and shisha terrace, more than 400 sq/m of meeting space with spectacular sea and city views, and an outdoor rooftop pool. In addition, a new westernthemed restaurant – called Patio – is opening in time for Eid Al Adha and will feature a stylish and funky menu with an ultimate focus on fresh home-made soup as well as excitingly innovative salads and sandwiches. In addition, a lobby lounge will also be launched in the near future. Desmond explains “The location of the property is in the prime district of Seef, and in close proximity to the world class malls and the exhibition centre. The focus will be on local clientele for the food and beverage outlets, and on guests from Saudi Arabia, neighbouring Gulf countries and other nations around the world for the accommodation. We are very proud of the spacious and state-ofthe-art guest rooms. Now the critical ingredient is for us to train our team to provide consistently attentive personalised service, contrasting dining choices, superlative meeting experiences, and to make sure that we pay close attention to the local market. It is extremely important for us to become part, and a supporter, of our local community.” Desmond has a world of experience in luxury hospitality, having worked with a host of innovative hotel companies across the globe. “I was educated in England and Northern Ireland, before I emigrated to Canada, where I worked for eight years,” he says. “I have been very fortunate to have worked with industry pioneers in the luxury hospitality industry in North America, Europe, Asia, the Middle East and South Africa.” Although this is Desmond’s first time to work in the Gulf region, this dynamic hotelier is thrilled to be in Bahrain, as he builds on the experience he gained in his time in Egypt and other locations. “I loved the challenge and excitement that came as part-and-parcel of my job in Cairo, and I am excited to see what is in store for me here,” he adds. Having been in Bahrain for just two months, he has found that the culture and cosmopolitan feel of the island is already growing on him. 44 September 2017
Desmond Acheson
A FRESH PERSPECTIVE PUJA TIWARI This hotel in the heart of the Seef district has a new leader with an ambitious vision to strategically boost profile and business. “From my initial impressions, Bahrain seems refreshingly mellow in comparison to Egypt, and people have a gentler approach when it comes to dealing with you. Everyone appears to have time for each other, which is a life skill and something that seems to be vanishing in many other parts of the world. So, this is very nice,” he says. When it comes to tourism being a major player in Bahrain, Desmond says he feels very encouraged by the tourism infrastructure on the island and the evident interest of the Kingdom’s decision makers to develop Bahrain as a major destination. This involves promoting the island as an attractive and competitive location for specific events, be they cultural, architectural, fashion-related, artistic or sports, without forgetting the supreme importance of the oil and gas industry, as well as international finance. The hospitality industry is here to
support and build on this, and will be the one to ultimately benefit from all this focus. When asked what he considers to be the best-loved aspect of his career in the hotel and catering industry, he says: “Witnessing the victories of former colleagues and seeing the people with whom I’ve worked over the years moving up the career and corporate ladder is simply fantastic. I get such a kick out of thinking that I might have contributed in some part in their progress.” In closing, Desmond says he hopes to spend many years in Bahrain to give Ramada Manama City Centre the recognition it deserves, saying: “I would love to be the person who can put this little gem of a hotel on the map, both as a professional hotelier, as well as for the parent company of the Wyndham Hotel Group and for the ownership company of Bukhowa Investments of Bahrain.” www.bahrainthismonth.com

Sudheer Kaladi
HERALDING A NEW ERA Puja Tiwari has a candid chat with the general manager of this four-star tower in Juffair about its various dining and leisure choices.
S
easoned hotelier Sudheer Kaladi has provided his expertise to make Juffair Gate Hotel a destination to charm and entertain people from all walks of life. Having been in Bahrain’s hospitality sector for nearly 20 years, the Indian national has witnessed the industry grow immensely and, in the process, developed his skills to keep up with it. “There are great hotels in the market and there is healthy competition, which keeps everyone motivated,” he says. “Bahrain is moving into a very positive era.” Sudheer studied and worked in India for five years before coming to the island. “I graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree, but got drawn to hospitality as the state I grew up in – Ooty – is a heavily touristic spot,” he says. “I started my career at Sterling Holiday Resorts, Ooty, in 1992. I came to Bahrain in 1998 and have since worked with Bahrain International Hotel, and the hotel at Hawar Island, where I was operations manager.” He then moved to the former Best Western Elite Hotel, followed by All Seasons Group, which saw him return to India for a brief stint to open a property there. “I have also been the pre-opening general 46 September 2017
manager for Atiram Premier, Holiday Gulf and Holiday Bahrain Hotel before coming to head Juffair Gate,” he adds. The establishment has a multitude of food and beverage outlets. Liv Club Lounge, a state-ofthe-art lounge with the latest audiovisual technology, is at the forefront. “Hip hop, R&B and afrobeat tunes attract partygoers every night of the week and we bring in several international and local talents to spin the decks and deliver foot-tapping tunes,” says Sudheer. Elaborating on the newly opened lounge and restaurant, Crossroads, which has a live Canadian band, he says: “A chef has been flown in from US to develop the menu with flavoursome continental fare. We aim for the venue to become a versatile hangout spot, whether you bring in friends or business associates.” Speciality restaurant La Liga serves Russian cuisine, Almas does Arabic, Copacabana does Ethiopian eats and Mirchi Gold specialises in Indian gastronomy. Prestige, the all-day dining venue, cooks up tempting Arabic and Asian dishes. Talking about the establishment’s advantage over its competition, Sudheer says: “We have
126 rooms, with 16 junior and family executive suites in total. Airport transfers are done free of cost and our location is in the prime area of Juffair, in close proximity to malls and American Alley.” Having headed properties in their transitional stage, Sudheer is well-versed with renovations and refurbishments. “One of the biggest challenges to take on is the staff,” he says. “Very often, they are wary of changes in the management, so the more important factor is to make them feel comfortable. “The second element is to bring in business and focus on customer service, which is key to bringing in new markets and keeping existing clients satisfied.” The corporate reins of Sudheer’s job don’t get in the way of limiting his creative pursuits. “I have, in the past, worked in south Indian movies in a villainous role,” he says. “I greatly admire theatre and cinema.” He also enjoys spending time with his family after a long day at the office. For the future, he eventually plans to retire and oversee the operations of a resort he owns on the border of Kerala, Karnataka and Tamilnadu with his brother. www.bahrainthismonth.com

Make Your House a
HOME Whether you’re decorating your home for the first time or are looking to revamp your current living space, the secret to a great design lies in the details. BTM rounds up the latest trends and the Kingdom’s leading home furnishing companies. The weather in Bahrain is still unbearably hot but that doesn’t mean you can’t revive your living space with the coolest autumn/winter trends from across the globe. Themes You don’t have to rip up the floorboards and start from scratch (unless you want to), there are many ways to spruce things up without breaking the bank and a good starting point is a fresh lick of paint. According to home décor experts, midnight blue is ‘in’ this season and is perfect for any room. You can use it as a base colour to create a rich and warm environment or, if you are looking for something subtler, introduce it through accessories like rugs, lamps or throws. You can find great value options at The One at Al Aali Shopping Complex. Warm metallics like copper are making a comeback because the colour and texture is ideal for covering large surfaces in kitchens and bathrooms. However, experts say that smaller items can add life to tired bedrooms or studies and recommend pairing with natural materials such as wood and marble for an www.bahrainthismonth.com
elegant look. Behzad Group, which includes kitchens by Elames, has a wonderful range of marble and natural stone finish porcelain tiles and stocks brands such as Marazzi, Venis, Portinari, Ragno and Rex. If you’re not afraid to go against the grain, there are plenty of fun ways to make your living room unique. The interiors world is taking escapist inspiration from historical explorers and naturalists – think vintage globes and suitcases along with large wall-mounted maps – to create a stunning overall look. Check out Spirit for Antiques & Handicrafts at Enma Mall and Innovation Themes at Galleria Mall for a range of premium-quality and exclusively selected artefacts. Catering to local tastes, Soft Touch Décor in West Riffa has pieces with an Arabic calligraphy theme. The designer carefully merges beautiful words and phrases into furniture such as chairs, coffee tables and more. The store offers luxurious and stylish options that are unique and elegantly designed to perfection from a range of renowned brands. homefurnishing you may consider using the new Moulinex Double Force range of food processors from Intercol. These machines take the time and effort out of common kitchen tasks, such as chopping, cutting, slicing, pureeing, kneading, grinding, grating and shredding. When it comes to kids’ bedrooms, the right look is a must. Home Centre has launched an exclusive collection of bright and playful children’s room accessories featuring SpiderMan, Cars and Disney Princess themes. The meticulously crafted collection includes table lamps, cushions, rugs, mugs, clocks, posters and more. Furniture Over the years, furniture is prone to wear and tear, leaving you with no choice but to invest in new pieces. While vintage is definitely cool right now, many people prefer a more contemporary vibe. If your budget allows, invest in some highquality, swanky furniture that makes an immediate impression – Seef has some great options. Pay a visit to Bo Concept, Roche Bobois and Phoenicia Décor, which is the dealer in Bahrain for international brands such as Natuzzi and Gautier. On the flip side, Premia Enterprises on Shaikh Salman Highway, Zinj, has a wide variety of products at affordable prices, including dining tables, bedroom sets, kitchen units, patios and even outdoor barbeque sets. Home Box at Marina Mall is also a great place for home staples with reasonable prices and regular sales. Arguably the most important piece of furniture in the entire home is the bed, and finding the right style, firmness and size can be a challenge. American Beds in Manama has a number of comfortable options to choose from, and there’s a selection of pillows, duvets, mattress toppers and bed linen too. The Home Store at Bahrain Mall also has a number of different sized beds available at affordable prices. ID Design in Sitra has a range of furniture so, whether you want to completely redecorate your living room or are just looking for a trendy accessory to spice up the ambience, there’s lots on offer. Speaking of ambience, there’s more to a home than just furniture and fittings. Bath & Body Works stocks a range of scented candles that not only set the mood, they make everything smell great. Even supermarkets like Al Jazira have diffusers and battery-powered air fresheners that go off at timed intervals. SPACE-SAVING IDEAS If you live in a rented apartment, small spaces 50 September 2017
can be a real pain. However, they can also be a catalyst for change – forcing you to clear the clutter and find inventive ways to store your belongings. Instead of boring, regular chairs, opt for seating that doubles up, like storage couches and ottomans. Keeping with the theme, a hanging clothing rack can help you make the most of your vertical space. If floor space is limited, use the walls to show off mementos with floating shelves – check out Home Centre for some options. ELECTRONICS So, you’ve sorted the furniture and the décor but something’s missing – the tech! No home in 2017 is complete without a hefty helping of flat screens, theatre systems and gaming consoles. Sharaf DG is a popular destination thanks to its wide array of all things electronic, while LuLu Hypermarket has a number of special offers on a variety of TVs and gaming systems, including the PS4. Ashrafs is a tech geek’s dream come true and
it even has full HD 3D home theatre projectors so you can get that cinema experience from the comfort of your sofa. On a side note, if you’re looking for kitchen appliances, Home Base has an extensive selection of TEKA products. LIGHTING Changing the lighting can transform the way you feel in your home. Whether you need to brighten a room to carry out tasks or would love to have some softer mood lighting to relax in the evenings, there are lots of choices, such as pendants, lamps, spotlights and wallmounted lights. Behzad Lighting has several great options to choose from, and stocks a plethora of brands, including Onok, Leds C4, Iris Crystal Chandeliers, Robus, Kinglong, Jingri, One Light and DiLux. So, now that you’re up-to-date, the only thing standing between you and transforming your home is your imagination (or your budget, a picky landlord/spouse, or a lack of spare time/ the urge to procrastinate). www.bahrainthismonth.com

Nakheel Centre
The All-In-One Area
The chic neighbourhood of Saar, located towards the west of the capital, is a great place to visit for all your needs.
www.bahrainthismonth.com
Over the past few years, Saar has seen an incredible boost in infrastructure, with the introduction of malls, restaurants, grocery stores, fitness facilities and more – almost anything you need is within reach. The new El Mercado Janabiya is conveniently situated near the highway exit to Janabiya, and can make for a good day out with its plethora of restaurants and shops. Choose from Choox Chicken Coop, Baguettes and More (BAM) for sandwiches, Frutto Gelato to beat the heat with a cold ice pop, Top and Dip for waffles and churros, NKD Pizza for some baked goodness and Joe Mama’s for gourmet fast food, among many others. The bright and spacious Alosra fulfils all your daily grocery and essential needs and there are salons, a pharmacy and more. Just a short walk away is the Atrium, still under construction and set to open in the near future with a host of shops and Lulu Hypermarket. Drive a couple of kilometres down the road and you reach Saar, proper which has the bustling St Christopher’s junior school and Nakheel Centre bang opposite the building. The complex features a smaller Alosra, restaurants and cafés, such as Starbucks, Baskin Robbins, Esquires Coffee and Chez Sushi. Unleash the child within by paying a visit to Craftzania or testing your intelligence at the Escape Code. Other establishments, including Dr Muna Alkuwari Dental Center, Cycology for fitness, Bubbles Nail Spa for much needed pampering, Alia Flowers and many more kids’ boutiques, can also be found here and Derma One NK Med Spa infuses technology with technique to deliver superior beauty treatments. Just a few metres away is Saar Mall, a busy place frequented by residents for its shopping and dining venues. Fast food joints, such as Papa John’s, Yum Yum Tree, EZ Burger and Natural Bites can be found

at the food court, whilst separate standalones Jasmi’s, Lumee Saar Kitchen and Starbucks offer a more intimate, relaxed setting. Track and Field Sports, Ehsan Optics, Skechers and Peek-A-Boo Kids along with several telecom branches, banks, a laundry and car rental are peppered across the mall. Macromart is a superstore selling essentials and electronics under one roof, and can be found on the drive towards Budaiya. Whether you are looking to get fit or delving into a new hobby, Saar has a multitude of options for you. Get a taste for football at Juventus Academy Bahrain or Bahrain Rugby Football Club. The Rugby Club also offers memberships and a space for expatriates to meet and participate in one of the many organised activities. The Bahrain Tennis Academy, Bin Jamal Taekwondo and Life-Fit gym in Janabiya are all perfect avenues for personal training, martial arts and high-intensity sports. The Dilmun Club is a family-oriented social club with several amenities including a pool, restaurant and bar. Fun activities take place throughout the week. Long gone are the days when one had to venture out of the Saar area and drive into town for a good meal. Plenty of great eateries have mushroomed opposite Saar Cinema, and the complex only gets bigger with new restaurants being added every few months. Try shisha in all flavours at Mido Du, Arabella, M Café and Outlet by Chez. The famed Villa Mama’s serves homemade Bahraini delights and L’Avenue bursts with cool Italian and international vibes. Crust Crema has a cult following of coffee lovers who swear by its in-house roasted beans, while Hopscotch is enjoying fame for its innovative cuisine and inviting décor. And a couple of independently owned spas and salons also exist within the complex. September 2017 55

Luxury, Privacy and Beauty
This hi-tech spa in the heart of Saar offers a wide range of aesthetic and wellbeing services.
56 September 2017
Operational since February 2013, Derma One NK Med Spa spotted the development potential of the Saar area and has since become a favourite with both local residents and loyal visitors from across the island. Situated in the Nakheel Centre, the spa is conveniently close to St Christopher’s School in a booming area of new shops, malls, residential apartments and villas offering the ideal opportunity for busy parents, teachers and nearby neighbours to enjoy a little pampering. Open daily from 9am to 7pm, Derma One uses SkinCeuticals, HydraFacial and medicated products, with several highly trained therapists working under the direction of skilled and experienced doctors, to offer the latest new-generation face and body treatments in an atmosphere of privacy, luxury and serenity. A spokeswoman says: “At Derma One NK, we take an integrated long-term approach to restoring and enhancing the natural beauty. We provide a vast range of services in all areas of aesthetics and well being, including SkinCeuticals Medi-Facials, laser hair removal, skin rejuvenation and massage therapies, through to the latest and most advanced body contouring and sculpting treatments. “At Derma One NK, we are committed to providing clients with the best quality advice and advanced treatments and procedures available. We strongly believe that the most important part of our service is the consultation. Prior to the start of any skincare
regime or treatment programme, it is essential to analyse your skin’s quality and health. This enables us to address your concerns accurately and document your skin’s progress.” For facial treatments, the spa’s aestheticians will begin your consultation with a complimentary Visia Skin Complexion Analysis. This involves taking threedimensional digital and ultraviolet images of the entire face, which will reveal your skin’s health and any underlying problems beneath the surface, which are not yet visible to the human eye. Using sophisticated computer software, the Visia machine can also assess how your skin will age over the next five years, providing the therapists with a grounding on which to base each client’s individual recommended skincare regime. Up-to-the-minute therapies on offer include microdermabrasion, dermaroller, needleless mesotherapy, which uses low-energy electrical pulses to infuse the skin with medication, and the HydraFacial – the newest advance in non-laser skin resurfacing. It’s the only hydradermabrasion procedure that combines cleansing, exfoliation, extraction, hydration and antioxidant protection simultaneously, resulting in clearer, more beautiful skin with no discomfort or downtime. SkinCeuticals offerings include peels, masks, firming and calming treatments and acne assistance. For the body beautiful, Derma One NK has a range of massage options and hair removal as well as contouring through Vela Shape, which is billed as the “only complete non-surgical alternative to liposuction”. The spa is currently running a Summer Special giving 20 per cent off all facial treatments and 40 per cent off laser hair removal. Call 17 595-560. www.bahrainthismonth.com

Mercedes-AMG CLA 45 4MATIC
T
he Mercedes-AMG CLA 45 4MATIC coupé is a mouthful to say, let’s be honest. It doesn’t exactly roll off the tongue but, I assure you, the name will stay firmly planted in your brain after you testdrive it. Dubbed by some motoring critics as ‘the baby CLS’ (it’s certainly easier to say), this vehicle is unmistakably from the same family. Despite its smaller stature, it packs as much punch as its famous sibling and definitely makes an immediate impression. Flowing curves and sweeping arcs create a body that’s simply beautiful from every angle. Aggressively styled, aerodynamic lower bodywork catches the eye at first glance and hints at the impressive capability under the bonnet (more about that later). The cabin is spacious and there’s enough room to comfortably seat four adults. The model I drove had bucket seats in the front, a nice touch that really added to the sporty ambience. Speaking of which, the understated, yet elegant, red and black colour scheme looked really cool. An eight-inch freestanding screen takes centre stage atop the wing-like dash, while 58 September 2017
aluminium-ringed air vents complete the look. Every shape and surface is designed to please the eye – what else would you expect from this marque? The steering wheel features a racing-inspired flat-bottom design, thick padding and a leatherwrapped rim with side grips, putting the delights of precise handling literally in the driver’s hands. Convenient multifunction controls do likewise while operating frequently needed vehicle functions. Once I’d familiarised myself with the settings and the three different driving modes, I set off on an adventure around the island – in Sport, obviously. Regular BTM readers may remember I love the sound of a roaring engine note and this model has a great one. In fact, I even made a couple of passes through a tunnel just to turn the volume up to 11! Finding a parking space around Manama can often be challenging. Luckily, the dimensions of this car make light work of slotting in, and the nimble, responsive steering requires nothing more than a light caress. During my test drive, the weather was typically hot and humid. Everyone in Bahrain knows the pain of getting into a car at around midday after
parking in the sun – it’s like stepping into an oven. Fortunately, the fantastic dual zone airconditioning kept me cool as a cucumber and didn’t take long to circulate through the entire vehicle – no oven gloves required! While some drivers are all about letting the car do the work, I prefer a more hands-on approach, literally. Using the paddle shifters I could shift gears quickly and confidently – it makes me feel more connected to the vehicle. Fear not, if you prefer to rely on the seven-speed dual-clutch transmission with AMG SPEEDSHIFT technology, you’re in safe hands too. When it comes to overall handling, few marques are on par with Mercedes AMG and it never ceases to amaze me how well these cars perform. Light and agile are just some of the words to describe the drive, but if I had to pick just one – powerful. Under the bonnet, a four-cylinder 375bhp engine guarantees a spirited, dynamic drive. This model makes the 0-100kmph dash in 4.1 seconds, which is not just shorter than it takes to say the car’s name, it’s the exact amount of time it takes for you to fall in love with it! All of the petrol engines and the four-cylinder diesel units fitted in the new BMW 4 Series range feature the latest BMW EfficientDynamics and are equipped with TwinPower Turbo technology. There are three petrol engines and three diesel options available for all the new 4 Series models. The power output of the petrol-engined model variants ranges from 184bhp in the BMW 420i up to 326bhp in the BMW 440i. When it comes to the diesel line-up, the power spectrum extends from 190bhp in the BMW 420d up to the 313bhp of the BMW 435d xDrive. The BMW 4 Series gran coupé is available in a further diesel variant – the BMW 418d with an output of 150bhp. A total of 12 model alternatives are available with the option of BMW xDrive, while the BMW 435d xDrive comes with the intelligent all-wheel-drive system as standard – in coupé, convertible and gran coupé guise. The optional navigation system for the new 4 Series range now features an interface that is even easier to use. The control pads can be arranged as desired and display a constantly updated version of the linked menu content, making operation even more intuitive. The entire line-up can be optionally fitted with the multifunctional instrument display, giving the driver the choice of different visualisation options for all displays depending on the driving mode selected. The BMW M4 coupé and BMW M4 convertible now come as standard with the adaptive full-LED headlights, while the full-LED rear lights freshen up appearances and inject technical appeal. Besides this, a number of styling touches have been added to give the cabins of the variants an even more sophisticated air. A Cool and Classy Coupé
The designers of this model were tasked with answering the question: “How do you make a work of art even more beautiful?” Well, judging from the impressive looks and capability of this mean machine, they found a way.
62 September 2017
Building on the charm of its predecessor, the Audi A5 coupé combines stunning looks with a spirited driving experience. But it’s more than just a pretty face. This model and its variants pack a technological punch that is sure to win over even the most discerning drivers. Available with a choice of two TFSI engines – mated with seven-speed S tronic gearboxes – power output is between 190bhp and 252bhp. Compared with the previous model, they both improve performance by up to 17 per cent while consuming as much as 22 per cent less fuel. There have been plenty of updates worth mentioning, one of which is the new chassis that provides optimal comfort and a high degree of agility. To further improve the driving experience, there is a suspension with damper control.
In case you couldn’t tell from its looks alone, this model has been on a diet and weighs 60kg less than its predecessor, making it even more efficient. In fact, the body is the lightest in the competitive field thanks to an intelligent mix of materials and lightweight design. The interior is quintessentially Audi. High-quality materials in a wide range of colours provide a pleasant ambience and underscore the premium character of this mid-sized model. It can be customised and the interior ambient lighting offers a choice of 30 adjustable shades. There’s plenty of storage space, too, thanks to the longer wheelbase. The luggage compartment offers a volume of 465-litres, and the rear seat has a 40:20:40 split and can be easily folded for additional room. The automaker’s technological prowess is definitely a strong selling point. The two-door coupé is available with gesture control for opening the luggage compartment lid via a foot motion. The A5 coupé is now available for the first time with the virtual cockpit, a 12.3-inch TFT display. Together with the MMI navigation plus, including an 8.3-inch monitor on the centre console, it forms the central information unit. The Audi phone box with wireless charging in the centre armrest uses near-field coupling to link smartphones wirelessly to the vehicle’s antenna and enables inductive charging according to the Qi standard. For very discerning hi-fi fans, the Bang & Olufsen sound system with its innovative 3D sound is available as an option. An intelligent combination of different technologies enhances the safety, comfort and efficiency and the broad choice of innovative driver assistance systems sets standards in the segment. Compared with the previous model, nearly all of the systems are either completely new or have been extensively updated. New and important safety features include the park assist, cross traffic assist rear, exit warning, collision avoidance assist and turn assist as well as the Audi pre sense systems. New trim lines provide numerous customisation opportunities. Besides the base model, there are also the sport and design lines. Audi offers the S line exterior package for a particularly dynamic appearance. The new S5 coupé combines dramatic elegance with the performance of a sports car. The turbocharged V6 engine produces 354bhp and consumes just 7.3-litres of fuel per 100km. The sharper S exterior design and the S-specific details in the interior underscore the dynamic character of this model. Call Audi Centre Bahrain on 17 459-933. www.bahrainthismonth.com

A Super SUV
JAC S3
This stylish new model combines practicality, performance and plenty of on-board technology.
64 September 2017
Bahrain Commercial Services, the Kingdom’s JAC dealer, recently launched the S3, a compact SUV that has been built with urban young customers in mind. Gone are the days when new drivers were forced to drive battered old rust buckets, now they can cruise around in style without breaking the bank. The S3 is a sleek-looking model with chrome accents that give a subtle yet substantial nod to its sensational selection of available features. Keyless entry, Bluetooth, MP3 player, air conditioning, power windows and steering, rear camera, LED headlights, navigation and tyre pressure monitoring systems are just some of the highlights. Safety is an important factor and this model is designed to keep driver and passengers secure. It has a rigid body made with high-intensity steel and is also equipped with Electronic Stability Control, Electronic Power Advanced Steering, ABS Brakes (which prevent skidding and help you maintain steering control under hard braking conditions) and Hill-start Assist Control – making it ideal for most terrains. The S3 also has an accurately calibrated front Mac-
Pherson suspension, higher responsiveness, ensuring a smoother driving experience. Meanwhile, eccentric type front shock absorbers reduce the horizontal force, improving their lifespan, and the transverse stabiliser bar improves the rolling stiffness of the vehicle’s suspension. Inside is just as impressive. The centre console ensures everything is clearly laid out and easy to use and the leather-wrapped steering wheel is equipped with a multi-function button to adjust the multimedia and cruise control system. Under the bonnet is a 1.6-litre engine that generates 118bhp and 155 Nm of torque. Parking is simple and hassle free thanks to the rear camera and parking sensors – and finding a space to slot into is easy thanks to the car’s compact dimensions. The S3 also has an impressive amount of storage space. You can easily fit a couple of large suitcases in the boot and still have room for your weekly shopping. Special Edition Debut
New Model Launched
Volkswagen Bahrain has launched the special edition Touareg, which is available in SE, SEL and Sport trims. The Touareg is one of the best selling models for Volkswagen worldwide with over a million sold since its initial launch. “In the Kingdom it has enjoyed continuous success and popularity among the locals and we anticipate its popularity will continue with this new special edition,” says Felix Miranda, brand manager of Volkswagen Bahrain. The new model gives drivers fun off-road adventure, the comfort of a luxury sedan and the stimulating drive experience of a sports car, its makers say. With an unmistakably striking and distinctive look, the car offers affordable luxury with features including a panoramic sunroof, leather comfort seats, chrome-finish alloys and premium interior finishings. This model provides drivers with a safe, comfortable and dynamic driving experience and boasts state-of-the-art, passenger-centric technology, including a post-collision braking system, city emergency braking system, ‘PreCrash’ proactive passenger protection system, a start-stop feature and a coasting function.
Motorcity, the distributor of Volvo in the Kingdom, launched the new Volvo XC60. The secondgeneration compact SUV has been revamped and is more impressive than ever thanks to an array of available assistance systems and, of course, safety features. Some of the most notable improvements include a state-of-the-art infotainment system and more legroom for rear-seat passengers. The five-seater is offered in three trim levels: Momentum, Inscription and R-Design, which are further differentiated by two engine choices – T5 and T6. A turbocharged 254bhp four-cylinder engine powers the T5, while the T6 receives an additional supercharger, which increases the power to 320bhp. The new safety features include an updated City Safety technology with steering support, which guides your car to avoid obstacles, a new Oncoming Lane Mitigation system that ensures drivers don’t wander out of lane, and an optional Blind Spot Information System.
A Refreshed Look
Retro Prototype INFINITI unveiled a heritageinspired prototype vehicle at the 2017 Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance. The company says it captures the ingenuity and adventure of early motor sports with the brand’s contemporary design language. “It started as a simple thought – what if we found a car, down at the southern tip of Japan, buried deep in the bush, hidden from all eyes for 70 years? What if in this car we found the seed of passion planted during our first Japanese Grand Prix and the power and artistry of INFINITI today? What would this discovery look like?” says Alfonso Albaisa, senior vice president, Global Design. “The vehicle has been developed through a journey back to the roots of our company and back forward again with the fusion of advanced technology and the hands and hearts of hundreds of craftsmen.” 66 September 2017
Hyundai will launch its refreshed Sonata in the Middle East this month, with preview images of the mid-sized sedan showing dramatic changes to the bodywork. New sheet metal and trim details will bring the current-generation model in line with Hyundai’s evolving design language. “The refreshed design is very different from the outgoing model, and goes far beyond the few small cosmetic changes people normally expect for a facelift,” says Hyundai’s head of operations for Africa and the Middle East, Mike Song. “The appearance from both the front and rear is completely new, with clever detail changes to the exterior trim making a subtle difference to the car’s side profile. The body looks longer, wider, and sportier than before.” The new design architecture centres on Hyundai’s cascading grille, which is a signature, unifying design element across the range. It makes the bonnet appear longer and sleeker, which is counterbalanced by the raised boot lid, giving the side profile a more dynamic attitude, its makers say. www.bahrainthismonth.com
A Stylish Addition
Future Mobility
Elegant simplicity, a visually reductive approach and pioneering consumer technology are the hallmarks of the new Range Rover Velar. Designed to fill the space between the Evoque and the Sport, it offers high levels of luxury, refinement and all-terrain capability. The design is beautifully balanced, from its powerful proportions to its continuous waistline through to the taut tapered lines of the rear, its makers say. The large alloy wheels – in particular the range of 22-inch designs – optimise the vehicle’s silhouette, while further enhancing its dramatic presence. The interior is just as impressive thanks to the designer’s belief in reductionism, which sees the use of switches being kept to an absolute minimum. The Touch Pro Duo infotainment system integrates two 10-inch high-definition touchscreens. You can use Touch Pro Duo together with the optional full-colour Head-Up Display and optional Interactive Driver Display to simultaneously view and interact with multiple features. The vehicle has been developed to meet the most demanding crash test regulations worldwide. Combined with a comprehensive restraints system that includes six airbags, and a suite of advanced driver assistance systems, including Adaptive Cruise Control with Queue Assist and an Adaptive Speed Limiter, the Velar integrates the latest safety technology. Performance and efficiency come from the range of six petrol and diesel powertrains, all mated to ZF eight-speed automatic transmissions and all-wheel drive with Intelligent Driveline Dynamics.
BMW has set its course for the future of mobility, with both electrification and cleaner diesel engines at the heart of its plans. The company’s management board chairman Harald Krüger has highlighted how the company was the first German manufacturer to invest in electric vehicle technology with its BMW i vehicles, however, he now believes that future mobility must also be sustainable. “Future mobility will definitely depend on state-of-the-art diesels as well,” says Krüger. “Environmental protection has several dimensions: one of them is the fight against climate change.” Modern, efficient diesel engines ensure lower CO2 emissions and, therefore, make an important contribution to protecting the environment. In addition, when it comes to many unwanted emissions, diesels are just as clean or even cleaner than petrol engines. This can certainly be said of particulate, hydrocarbon and carbon monoxide emissions, meaning that three of the four major diesel pollutant issues have been resolved and no longer have any adverse effect on air quality. This is why the BMW Group is calling for objective discussions based on facts and scientific evidence.
Service Training
Cool Concept Mercedes-Benz is aiming to impress with its latest offering. The Vision MercedesMaybach 6 Cabriolet combines the luxury of a super yacht with dazzling super-coupé looks and a drop-top roof. The German automaker described the new model as a sensual, emotionally appealing design with innovative technical concept solutions that define the ultimate in luxury of the future. The interior is covered in crystal white nappa leather that’s shaped in the same way as high-end Chesterfield furniture, while the wooden floor is another hint to its yachting inspiration. While it is uncertain if the vehicle will go into production, we at BTM are certainly impressed and hope it’s smooth sailing ahead! www.bahrainthismonth.com

Kesha – Rainbow What’s the story?
Rainbow is the third studio album by American pop diva Kesha and she began writing it during and after spending time in a rehab clinic between January 2014 and October 2016. Indeed, the title is a reference to this as a rainbow is a beautiful trick of the light that arises after a thunderstorm. Kesha has said that Rainbow was inspired by her true musical influences from Iggy Pop and T. Rex to James Brown and Sweet. She wrote the title track on a toy keyboard while in rehab and roped in a full orchestra to complement it.
Worth a listen?
Kesha doesn’t seem haunted by days gone by on Rainbow. Even when she’s hinting at her pain, she’s not wallowing in it; the whole point of the album is that she’s found a path toward peace. Kesha’s newfound serenity is underscored by how she still finds plenty of space to cut loose on Rainbow, cranking out a pair of metallic glam-rockers with Eagles of Death Metal, pouring glitter on Johnny Cash on Hunt You Down, pushing the neon pulse of Boots, and even indulging in a bit of twee folk on Godzilla. Still, the heart of Rainbow lies in its stirring ballads, and while these odes to self-empowerment are endemic to 2010’s pop, Kesha’s emotions feel earned, not because we know her backstory, but because her songs are specific, not generic. Sometimes she’ll slide into cliché, usually by recycling therapyspeak, but how she pairs these credos with veiled confessions is as striking and moving as her party songs are weird and funny.
Verdict: A superb comeback shines bright.
Shorts
The Districts – Popular Manipulations Philadelphia indie rock quartet The Districts put all the pieces together on their third album. While earlier releases revealed a scrappy, hardworking band performing beyond the expectations of their tender age, they had yet to lock onto an essential sound. This is a heavy stride forward, taking a more streamlined yet experimental approach delivered with a buckled-down intensity that leaps out of the speakers. Rippling with energy, opening cut If Before I Wake begins with a buzzing drone and near-chanted vocals before exploding into a primal psychedelic groove, introducing what feels like a transformed band. Creative arrangements abound throughout the album, from dark spacy pop to percussive minimalism. www.bahrainthismonth.com
The Cribs – 24-7 Rock Star
Frankie Rose – Cage Tropical
Recorded in five days but years in the making, 24-7 Rock Star is the Cribs’ raw response to 2015’s poppy For All My Sisters. Like Weezer and Nirvana, the Cribs’ blend of melody and aggression is more interesting than either part on its own, and the album pairs the energy of their early days with the discipline that comes from years of being in a band. Nevertheless, emotion triumphs over craft, from the sound of squalling songs like Give Good Time and Year of Hate to the direct lyrics of Partisan. While it doesn’t feel quite as honed as some of the Cribs’ other albums, 24-7 Rock Star is a lot of fun, as well as more proof that the band’s eternal tug of war between grit and polish still generates excitement.
Frankie Rose almost gave up making music during a downturn that occurred after she moved to her former home of Los Angeles, then found herself doubting her future. Luckily for anyone who didn’t doubt Rose’s skills, she rebounded and went to work to produce her fourth record. Not surprisingly after the artistic crisis she went through, Cage Tropical is a little different than her past work. Gone are the lingering traces of her fuzzy-noise pop beginnings and the spacy textures of mid-2010s work. Instead, she and her team of collaborators craft a sound that is built more on synths, icy cold atmospheres, and the goth pop tropes of the ‘80s. Banks of chilly synths, pulsing sequencer bass, FX’d guitar lines, and mechanical-sounding drums surround Rose’s processed vocals, all blending together in a murky, dry ice-coated Wall of Sound. Games Review Game: Hellblade: Senua’s Sacrifice Rating:
What is it?
Hellblade is an action-adventure hack and slash game that follows the titular Senua, a Celtic warrior who embarks on a mission to the homeland of the Northmen in order to penetrate the depths of their version of hell, the mythological Norse land of the dead called Helheim. It’s bound by threads of historical fiction, historical non-fiction, mythology, and metaphor all woven together to create a unique backdrop that’s ripe for exploring dark tones and themes.
Verdict:
An action-packed and thoughtful experience.
Gameplay:
There’s no head up display in Hellblade. Instead, a chorus of voices shout panicked advice at Senua in the heat of battle. “Behind you!” one of them screams seconds before an enemy stabs at Senua’s back. Combat is still a tense experience knowing that dying too many times (in or out of combat) will cause your save to be deleted and you’ll be forced to start from the beginning. While that might sound draconian in execution, its tie-ins to the story are concrete, reinforcing a system where failure carries meaning rather than simply acting like a gimmick to artificially inflate difficulty.

Fortnite
Graphics:
Visually, Hellblade is a gorgeous game to take in, featuring sunsoaked rocky beaches, vividly distorted streaks of colour and light, and deep darkness that strangles the screen. There’s a variety of hues, saturation, and exposures that convey meaning in most areas. Hellblade’s use of full-motion video splices in real footage of secondary characters’ performances through a heavily distorted filter that creates impactful scenes between real and animated characters.
Fortnite is an action building game that sees you and your friends leading a group of Heroes to reclaim and rebuild a homeland that has been left empty by a mysterious darkness only known as ‘The Storm’. Band together online to build extravagant forts, find or build insane weapons and traps and protect your towns from the strange monsters that emerge during The Storm.

apps
Apps Review BTM brings you the low-down on the latest and greatest apps on the market.
What is it?
RescueTime gives you data about how many times you check your phone and what you do with that time. It gives out information on the most-used apps, moments spent talking on the phone, and tracks your Internet usage as well. Furthermore, you can set alerts to manage the time you spend on your device, and get regular progress reports to see a marked improvement. Once you know where your valuable minutes are being wasted, you can put an end to it through this app.
The Good:
The app tracks all your computer usage, or only apps and sites you want. It can work across your phone as well as multiple Macs and PCs. It creates great reports filled with graphs and charts that contain information you can use to change behaviour. Also, it is really easy to set up and you can customise options.
App: RescueTime Rating: Verdict: A superb time-management app.
The Bad:
Sadly, charts and data are only available on the web app and not on your phone; it would be nice to have them locally available. There are also no comparison tools to see how much (or how little) you’ve changed over time.
App: Trusted Contacts
App: Snapseed
Trusted Contacts is one safety app that everyone should have on their phones. It lets you add your closest friends and family as trusted contacts. These contacts can request for your location. If all is well, you can deny the request. However, if you don’t, then your information is sent out to them automatically after a certain time frame, even if your phone is offline or out of battery. If you are in an emergency, you can send the location to them yourself.
Do you love smartphone photography? If the answer is in the affirmative, then having a photo editing app would also be a must. Snapseed is exactly the app you’re looking for as it has 29 filters that can be applied to pictures. It comes with all the basic editing tools and can be used to crop photos, rotate them, adjust colours, add text to pictures, resize them, and add various effects to them. The app lets you get creative with your photos till they look exactly as you want them to.

Music by the Sea
VERDICT: An incredible, genre-defining experience.
Film: Dunkirk Rating:
Beat Beach Music Festival returned to Coral Bay with DJs from across the island as well as international guests, LED dancers and a light show. DJ Kosh, Madan & DJ Ali Bakhtiar
Directed by: Christopher Nolan Starring: Fionn Whitehead, Harry Styles, Tom Hardy, Kenneth Branagh
The Plot:
In 1940, after the invasion of France by Nazi Germany, hundreds of thousands of Allied soldiers retreated to the seaside town of Dunkirk. As the Allied perimeter shrinks and German forces close in, the soldiers await evacuation in a seemingly hopeless situation. The narrative follows three interconnected perspectives covering different but overlapping periods: on land covering one week, on the sea covering one day, and in the air covering one hour.

Worth Watching?
If there’s any justice in the world, Dunkirk will be a shoo-in for a glorious haul at the Oscars and stand as one of the best films of the year. The actors do brilliantly with relatively little in the way of dialogue and the cinematography is utterly outstanding. Spitfires screech across the Channel in glorious formation and shots sound off with tremendous bangs as Han Zimmer’s colossal score heightens the tension. The music plays a crucial role in making Dunkirk feel so intense and suspenseful. This isn’t a traditional war movie with mangled corpses and brutality, but rather focuses on the terror of being stranded away from home.

ith colourful patterned tiles and sophisticated décor, Gallery Café is a stylish space oozing millennial chic elegance. The minimalist furniture, bright yet low key chandeliers, floor-to-ceiling windows and wooden flourishes lend the space a sleek, upbeat ambience. Quirky framed artworks and greenery only add to its charm. The eatery’s recently revamped, inventive menu features new and classic dishes with a gourmet spin. It boasts a wide array of sandwiches, salads, mains and desserts, leaving you spoilt for choice. A counter of freshly baked goods and sweet treats faces the dining area. The in-house bakery also makes gluten-free bread and customisable cakes for all occasions. The samples on display looked like they were fit to be featured on the The Great British Bake Off series. avocado, pomegranate and leafy greens with a sweet onion citrus dressing tasted as refreshing as it sounds. The zesty tang of citrus synchronised well with the fruity sweetness. A wooden board loaded with halloumi and labneh guacamole wrap accompanied by fries arrived next. The creamy spread with the crispy saj bread was a delight for the palate and a meal on its own. The new menu items make dining a fun and exciting activity. I say this because the next dish, the Art Trio Sliders, consisted of colourcoded buns (food dyes derived from turmeric and beetroot) according to the filling – fish, beef or chicken. This is a great entrée or snack, ideal for sharing by two people. The efficiency of the staff was commendable. They were attentive yet not imposing. I looked around to notice the place flooded in natural light, a rarity in Bahrain. If you like the sun but hate the sweltering heat that comes with it, this is the perfect place for you. crumbs on top of the steak in shades of green and gold was a treat for the eyes. The meat was tender and juicy, cooked medium-rare to perfection. It was a fast-favourite and was polished off in minutes. The Gallery Burger was made up of pure Wagyu beef, duck fat potato confit, poached and fried egg, cheddar cheese, Béarnaise and truffle sauce. The winning feature was the bun, smooth and black as the night. Edible bamboo charcoal powder, which has a sweet vanillalike taste, was infused into the dough. By this time, we were quite full as the portion was generous. Burger enthusiasts are sure to enjoy this one. For dessert, we chose the Chocolate Lava – a fondant cake with a liquid chocolate filling and ice cream. Ingredients for the pizzas, pastas and homemade gelato have been carefully sourced and imported. The tantalising pizzas are the main attraction. Baked in a monolithic marble-clad Neapolitan oven, each creation is freshly prepared and cooked right in front of you at the venue. Authentic Mediterranean food can also be had at the Santorini-themed Nicole’s Restaurant and Lounge and Florence La Maison Méditerranéenne. Umami, Houseboat and Masaya sit confidently across the enclave of favourites. Additionally, you will find turn of the century reminiscent Parisian brasserie Café Lilou, the always-buzzing Coco’s, and Thailand or Monsoon for those seeking an Oriental repast. With its art exhibits and a cool little café, Al Riwaq Gallery is a trendy attraction for millennials. Restaurants with rooftop seating are fairly popular, especially during the cooler months, and some notable establishments with terraces are The Meat Company, Passion Restaurant and Hash House. www.bahrainthismonth.com

Some recent additions include Calexico, whipping up contemporary cal-mex dishes and innovative cocktails, dessert specialists Cine Café, Attic for Greek treats and Slider Station, a bustling building outlined with cool, lush greenery. For whopping burger meals, Blaze Burgers and More, Motorox Café and Jan Burger deserve a mention because of the sheer volume of fans that flock through their doors each day. When in Bahrain, sampling local eats is imperative. ‘Shawarma Alley’ or the Osama Bin Zaid Avenue is a crowded street peppered with Arabic grill joints, where you get to witness meat being shaved off a vertical spit and swiftly wrapped into Arabic bread drizzled in tahina and other condiments. The most ordered items include malghoum, shawarma and vegetarian delight, falafel, made with ground chickpeas. Grilled lamb, beef, fish and chicken are also available. Fresh juices such as avocado, orange and pineapple, among others, make for refreshing sippers in the summer heat. If you head straight over the crossroads, a cluster of diverse eateries awaits. Hardees, Habara Snacks and Fish, KFC, Kudu and La Chocolat dish out quick bites and fast food. A stone’s throw away is The Urban Dhaba for Indian street food, Fuddruckers, Caribou Coffee and a newly launched branch of McDonalds. Not too far from here is a lane speckled with casual dining restaurants. There are also a couple of modest shisha cafes including Solidare and Caruoca. For Mexican food with a vivacious atmosphere, head to Casa Mexicana or Senor Pacos; get your fix of Asian fare from David’s Stir Fry; Cico’s for Italian; India Gate and Clay Oven for Indian and Brazil Rodizio and Grill for authentic Brazilian cuisine. Quieter watering holes such as Mansouri Mansions, Cyprus Taverna and Old Beams enjoy a cult following. Exiting Osama Bin Zaid Avenue, you come across another area packed with restaurants with plenty of shisha cafes, like Maggie’s, Al Bindaira Café, Arizona, Extrovert, Veranda and the renowned Don Vito’s Café. Opposite Maggie’s is the tiny Burger Town, which serves a www.bahrainthismonth.com

speciality burger with camel meat. Authentic Thai eats can be had at Banana Leaf and Baan Saeng Thai. Gallery 21, a fairly new restaurant complex, is home to Asia de Cuba, Gallery Café, Genwa Lounge and the Cigar Lounge. Whimsical displays and art pieces can be found at every corner here. Within the area is also the multi-outlet The Gulf Hotel, with 18 dining venues, including one by a Michellinstarred chef. Several visits will be needed just to appreciate the full scope of the venues on offer. It has Zahle for Lebanese, Takht Jamsheed for Iranian, Sato for Japanese, Royal Thai, Rasoi by Vineet for Indian, Margarita Mexicana for Mexican, La Pergola for Italian, Fusions, China Garden and Al Waha for international cuisine. Café Delices serves up a delicious Bahraini breakfast and snacks, while Sherlock Holmes is great for a casual drink with your dear ones or a fun brunch.

Chef Kazuo Takagi
GULF HOTEL
Sensational September This landmark hotel is dishing up a hefty helping of fun and five-star gastronomy all month long.
90 September 2017
The Gulf Hotel has an action-packed month ahead with visits from two Michelin-starred chefs, a terrific tribute act, and the return of its popular annual Oktoberfest celebrations. Visitors are invited to go on a culinary journey – spanning parts of Asia and Europe – with plenty of authentic fare and the chance to meet the creative minds behind the menus. Japanese chef, Kazuo Takagi will visit the Kingdom for the first time. With two Michelin-stars under his apron, he will create a special menu for diners at the hotel’s Sato restaurant from September 20-24. Chef Takagi entered the culinary world at the age of 23 and, although he started later than most Japanese chefs, he prevailed with talent, dedication and passion. His restaurant – Takagi in Japan – received two Michelin stars in 2010. He specialises in Kyoto cuisine and his creations are known to reflect the season. Soup is his trademark dish and he describes it as composed, delicate and illustrative. Guests are invited to take part in an exclusive cooking master class and lunch with the chef on September 23, which costs BD39 per person. There are limited slots and availability is on a first come, first served basis.
Renowned Indian chef Vineet Bhatia will visit later in the month – stay tuned for dates! The Michelinstarred chef will be at Rasoi by Vineet to oversee his culinary creations and will also host an exclusive beverage dinner where guests will be presented with a personally signed menu. Further, he will host a cooking master class and lunch, which costs BD39 per person. The hotel’s wildly popular Oktoberfest is back, and this year it runs for two days on October 12 and 13. Things kick off at 7.30pm at the Gulf Convention Centre. Expect a wide range of traditional dishes paired with a great selection of Bavarian beverages. It costs BD26++. www.bahrainthismonth.com
The Lasterbacher Musikanten Band will provide the entertainment. They will play German and English dance music ranging from oldies to the latest hits, as well as, of course, German Oktoberfest classics. And the fun doesn’t stop there. Oktoberfest celebrations continue at Sherlock Holmes from October 15-20. The Lasterbacher Musikanten Band is back to help you dance the night away from 8.30pm and there will be a special à la carte Oktoberfest menu, a selection of Bavarian beverages and Oktoberfest games. Entry is free. Keeping with the musical theme, partygoers are in for a real treat this month. On September 21, One Step Behind (OSB) – the UK’s premier and longest-surviving Madness tribute band – will perform at Sherlock Holmes from 9pm onwards. Formed in spring 1993, the band achieved widespread recognition in an unusually short time, playing venues the length and breadth of Britain, including the Marquee Club in London and the Venue in New Cross. Jaunts into Europe and beyond are also commonplace. Members of Madness have joined One Step Behind on stage on a number of occasions. Sax player Lee Thompson is quoted as saying that OSB were “singlehandily keeping the good ship Madness afloat”. Drummer Dan ‘Woody’ Woodgate joined the band on stage and told the boys he thought they were amazing. “That’s exactly what we used to be like – you’ve got it to a tee,” he said. Perhaps the greatest tribute came from Madness lead singer, Suggs. At a gig at G-MEX in Manchester he walked up to the microphone and said “By the way, we’re Madness not One Step Behind!” One Step Behind have also appeared on television a number of times. Their most recent appearance was at the 2006 Proms party in Hyde Park, London. The band performed to around 50,000 people and a television audience in the millions. The whole band grew up as Madness fans and each member has perfected their portrayal of their original Madness counterpart. They strive to match every detail,

both musically and in appearance. Like Madness, One Step Behind are well known for their on-stage antics with which they build up an authentic ‘nutty’ atmosphere. Tickets cost BD5 in advance and BD7 on the night. Since it would be true madness to stop the fun there, the boys are back for an encore performance the following day at the Sherlock Holmes Friday British Brunch from 12.30pm. The brunch will include free flowing beverages, unlimited sharing platters of scotch eggs, chicken pops, jalapeno poppers, wings, nachos and Caesar salad, followed by free-flowing mains – fish and chips, chili and curry bowls. There will be a special Chinese Peking duck and steak trolley too. It costs BD20 for early bird, Prestige Club and NSA members and BD25 on the day. Chef Vineet Bhatia

Cancer-Fighting Research Dr Shaker Al Sadi, consultant internist, haematologist and medical oncologist, outlines advances in cancer treatments that offer hope to patients. The outlook for individuals with diseases in haematology and cancer is starkly different to 50 years ago. Today, people with some of the most common diseases in both specialities routinely live for years after diagnosis, and some cancers, previously considered untreatable, are responding to recent advances in precision medicine and immunotherapy. Research accounts for many of the biggest advances of the last several decades, such as developing a life-extending treatment that effectively targets an aggressive blood cancer, helping women survive breast cancer without disfiguring surgery and proving that postsurgical chemotherapy can benefit patients with a range of cancers. Advances in recent years include: introduction of three immunotherapies for the

most common type of lung cancer; four new drugs for the treatment of CLL (leukaemia); two new immunotherapies for melanoma; and the first vaccine approved for cervical cancer – and there are numerous others. For those who do contract the disease, it’s perfectly normal to be anxious about chemotherapy. To help manage these fears, the oncologist’s job is to discover what you’re afraid of – is it the possible side-effects, such as pain, fatigue or nausea; do you fear losing your hair, et cetera. Once the fears are identified, you can talk them through with doctors and specialist nurses. A support group also might be helpful. Nowadays patients can take chemotherapy and go to work the same day and, thankfully, there are biologicals and targeted therapy that do not have the major side-effects of the traditional chemotherapy agents. The key to the best treatment is good communication between the patient and the doctors.

Empowering Women
A global study by this renowned jewellery brand found 80 per cent of women are inspired by photography that celebrates life’s everyday triumphs.
100 September 2017
Recent research has prompted a PANDORA initiative for women to share more candid imagery. The results, which were revealed ahead of World Photography Day on August 19, have inspired the direction of the brand’s Autumn 2017 campaign, entitled ‘Do See the Wonderful’. The study, which interviewed more than 7,000 females across eight countries and three continents, recognises that six times as many are inspired by natural photographs of other women succeeding in everyday life than they are by static, posed ‘selfies’. PANDORA concludes that women feel encouraged by seeing the day-to-day achievements of others, from spending time with children to training for a sporting event, and the brand wants to see these things celebrated truthfully in the content it shares online. The results also show that almost half the respondents already capture photographs of everyday moments on their phone, demonstrating that many already identify the significance of the small things in life and are accustomed to documenting these activities in order to create memories for years to come. However, one in three believe that trying to capture the ‘perfect’ photo causes them to miss out on a full experience, and three out of four wish they had more time to cherish small everyday moments in their lives. This leads PANDORA to believe that it’s time for a fresh, spontaneous style of photography that represents the real you. “The results highlight how, in today’s fast-paced, digital age, women often haven’t the time to reflect on and celebrate their daily accomplishments,” explains
PANDORA’s senior vice president and chief marketing officer Minna Phillipson. “At PANDORA, we want to inspire women to recognise the impact of the things they do – great or small – and will bring this message to life in a new stage of our ongoing ‘DO’ campaign, which champions being true to who you are.” In reaction to this study, the company is calling on women to share natural images of themselves and their loved ones’ everyday triumphs to offer more authentic representations of their lifestyle and to inspire others to recognise the wonderful in their own everyday lives. Images shared on Instagram with #DOSeeTheWonderful and tagging @theofficialpandora will be entered into an online competition, with winners selected for the most authentic and inspiring photography. The winning photos will be unveiled alongside a gallery of images taken by three renowned photographers commissioned by the company to capture wonderful and candid portraiture of women around the world. The full PANDORA ‘Do See the Wonderful’ campaign was unveiled alongside the brand’s Autumn 2017 collection on August 31. marketplace Saluting the fascinating world of Chinese maritime history, this Swiss watchmaker honours the Zheng He Treasure Boat with a limitededition enamel cloisonné timepiece. ASIA JEWELLERS
Going Back in Time
Paying homage to Chinese naval heritage, Ulysse Nardin introduces an exceptional watch in its new Classic Collection. The Chinese Treasure Boat (or Bao-Chuan) was a type of large wooden ship in the fleet of admiral Zheng He, the renowned explorer and mariner, who led seven incredible voyages during the early 15th-century Ming Dynasty. These massive ships were 137m long and 55m wide, with nine masts and four decks for up to 500 crew as well as cargo. While they were few in number, Zheng He’s expeditions covered extensive territory, travelling through Southeast Asia to faraway Africa and Arabia. With a fleet numbering hundreds of ships, and crews of around 30,000 men, his was easily the biggest maritime journey of that time. Between 1405 and 1433, Zheng made a total of seven voyages, visiting 37 countries – an incredible achievement. To accurately portray the appearance of the Zheng He Treasure Boat, Ulysse Nardin called upon its enamel specialists Donzé Cadrans for the intricate cloisonné technique so valued by collectors. In this very ancient art form, which dates back to the early fourth century, craftsmen employ fine gold wire to create the compartments, within which the enamel is carefully deposited. Every cloisonné dial involves immense effort and patience, requiring 50 hours of artisanal expertise and 26 separate processes to bring a scene to vivid life. Handcrafted from 18K rose gold and powered by the self-winding UN-815 COSC-certified movement, this Classic Collection timepiece boasts the characteristic accuracy of every Ulysse Nardin mechanical watch. It reveals reliability too, with a 42-hour power reserve and a 40mm dial that is water resistant to 50m. Récital 20 Astérium 10-Day Flying Tourbillon Night Sky Annual Calendar with Astronomical Functions TECHNICAL SPECIFICATIONS
The two times patented registered design of this Swiss watchmaker’s astronomical timepiece ticks all the boxes to come out tops. As it does every year, the Russian edition of the most influential luxury magazine, Robb Report, presented its ‘Best of the Best’ classifications in July. The biggest icons of the luxury industry are singled out according to the sections usually included in the publication. Having already won recognition in 2007, 2011, 2013, 2015 and 2016, the House of BOVET has once again been included in the ranks of this prestigious selection. The Tourbillon Récital 20 Astérium was recognised by the panel of experts as the ‘Best of the Best’ in astronomical timepieces. Numerous criteria were determined by the experts in order to honour the very finest in watchmaking excellence. Design, aesthetics, reliability, innovation and accuracy enabled the watch to outperform its competitors. The panel was particularly sensitive to the inclusion of a 325.25-day cam, which drives the astronomical functions with unprecedented precision. These functions in watchmaking are often driven by a perpetual calendar, which is inaccurate from a strictly astronomical point of view. This new distinction honours the virtuosity of the craftsmen, whose unrelenting passion www.bahrainthismonth.com
allows them, year after year, to redefine luxury in its noblest expression. The Récital 20 Astérium was entirely conceived, developed and manufactured from within the BOVET workshops to be absolutely consistent with the vision of long-term development promoted by Pascal Raffy, owner of the House of BOVET 1822 and its manufactures. Since 1822, Russia’s characteristic taste for art and watchmaking has allowed the brand to maintain close ties with Russian collectors, known for their distinction and, as such, their high expectations. These bonds, upheld by Pascal Raffy, enable the house to best meet the needs of its patrons and to endlessly redefine the boundaries of excellence. It is therefore with pride and gratitude that Pascal Raffy and all of the BOVET craftsmen dedicate this award to the collectors, who have helped write the most beautiful pages of the last two centuries of luxury watchmaking. At the same time, their expertise and passion also inspire future collections, which the company hopes will delight customers and experts as much as the Tourbillon Récital 20 Astérium has. BOVET timepieces are available in Bahrain at Asia Jewellers.

School Celebrates Results One of the most popular educational institutions in the Kingdom is growing from strength to strength, thanks to its consistent efforts to develop facilities for its students. The British School of Bahrain (BSB), rated as an ‘outstanding’ school by Bahrain’s Quality Assurance Authority, has seen continued investment over the summer break with the development of an enhanced sixth form centre and additional science labs as well as a number of new classrooms equipped with state-of-the-art technology on the third storey. “The continuing investment in the school’s facilities was a key factor in its students’ academic success,” says Julie Anne Gilbert, the head of school. “As the only school in the region to offer a triple pathway to tertiary education – through A levels, the International Baccalaureate and Business and Technology Education Council – we are delighted with the students’ success in recent examinations. Overall, 46.3 per cent of students attained A*/A grades, opening up tremendous opportunities as they move onto further education. “Students have been skilfully guided towards universities and courses that best fit their individual strengths by our head of sixth form, Sally Milnes. Amongst others, BSB students have secured places at Imperial College, University College London and King’s College London, some of the best universities in the world.
“This year, we were particularly pleased to have our first successful entrant to the University of Oxford. Sa’ad Khan, who got three A*s and an A, will be reading geography at Christ Church. This marks another step forward in the school’s journey from ‘outstanding’ to ‘world class’.” The BSB, which is part of the GFH Financial Group, was established in 1995 and offers education to more than 2,600 students from over 70 countries, aged three to 18, at a single state-of-the-art site in Hamala. JOZ SALON & SPA
An Effortless Beauty Treat Microdermabrasion is a painless cosmetic treatment that is an alternative to chemical peels and dermabrasion. This popular salon recommends it for a radiant complexion.
15 years ago. It has since been fully researched and tested by the European medical profession, and is now being administered in full safety at progressive medical and cosmetic practices.
salon spokesperson. Coupled with a purifying facial treatment, this is a comfortable way of improving the appearance of problematic young skin.
Microdermabrasion, also known as ‘Crystal Peeling’, is a process that blasts sterile corundum (a type of mineral) crystals onto the skin surface, so as to exfoliate the dead outer layer. With little downtime, this quick procedure is suitable for lunch hour beauty therapy. It enables the dead cells to be abraded and then whisked away by vacuum suction. New cell growth is subsequently stimulated, leaving skin smoother, brighter, firmer and, with a course of treatment, blemish free. This is particularly recommended for people with thick, oily and congested skin, which, after the treatment, has more of a glow. For those with soft acne scars, multiple sessions will reduce the depth of scarring, producing a more even complexion. Joz Salon & Spa uses a microdermabrasion system that has the added function of lymphatic drainage, which is routinely performed prior to the procedure, helping to clear the toxins accumulated in the tissues.
Procedure Depending on the problems to be treated, the level of exfoliation can be adjusted so that the process is pleasant or tolerable. A slight redness will fade within one to 24 hours, depending on the strength of the treatment.
Special added benefits • Immediate visible results • Brilliance and tonicity • Increases micro circulation, bringing nutrients to the skin • Improves the appearance of imperfections • Increases the penetration of serums and creams by four to five times.
History The microdermabrasion process was developed www.bahrainthismonth.com
Indications • Gentle exfoliation for tired, dull skin • Congested skin with open pores and comedones (blackheads and whiteheads) • Superficial pigmentation • Stretch marks • Sun-damage • Acne scar blending and improvement • Ageing hands • Blemishes from ingrown hair • Blackheads, unclear complexion. Joz Salon & Spa finds the procedure particularly useful in assisting in the removal of comedones, especially in the nose area. “If your nose is studded with blackheads, microdermabrasion will remove any overgrowing skin that can make these unsightly spots difficult to squeeze out,” says a
Treatment Programme Benefits can be visible after one treatment; however, the programme should be based on your skin condition and the goals that you want to achieve. The microdermabrasion technique is not an instant fix for problems. It is a gradual removal process of dead cells and blemishes with the promotion of healthy new skin. Once you have attained your goal, monthly maintenance is recommended. Even if you have no major concerns, you can still gain from the procedure. Your look will be brighter, firmer, clearer and healthier. Call 17 369-133, 16 031-120 or 17 756-449. September 2017 105

SYMMETRIA
Painless Fat Loss This clinic offers the ‘holy grail’ of slimming and toning that’s surgery-free, safe and painless, without excessive diet or exercise. Xero Lipo is now available exclusively in Bahrain at Symmetria. The clinic has a selected range of expert methods, techniques and equipment to eliminate cellulite and aid fat loss, one of which is the Xero Lipo Programme. The treatment targets specific areas to reduce fat and reshape the body in a doubleedged attack to accelerate natural fat burn using innovative, advanced technology, and to ensure the body is in an optimal state of metabolism to burn fat more efficiently. The Xero programme boosts the effects of healthy lifestyle changes using advanced technology to alter your body’s fat composition in several ways. • Biostimulatory laser fat cell reduction shrinks fat cells and releases excess fat in your chosen target area. • Neuromuscular stimulation tones muscles and burns fat faster, increasing metabolism to rapidly eliminate fat from the body. • Multipolar radiofrequency skin tightening gives a firmer, leaner physique. Xero technology is pain-free and can target specific stubborn areas that are resistant to diet and exercise with immediate results. Clinical dietitian Rima Othman answers some common questions. How it is applied? The treatment is carried out in three stages which begins with targeted laser application, to shrink the adipose tissue. This is followed by muscle contraction, which increases fat burning and enhances muscle tone. It is a type of passive exercise, which can provide immediate results. Through the intense muscle contraction, blood circulation in the problem areas is enhanced and cell metabolism is increased, causing the local fat to ‘burn’ away more quickly. How many treatments will I need? The number of treatments is determined at your initial consultation. The programme can last from one to 12 weeks and is tailored to fit around your lifestyle. A minimum of two sessions per week is recommended. www.bahrainthismonth.com
How long is each session? A Xero appointment usually lasts 45 to 60 minutes. During each appointment, your practitioner will take measurements for body analysis, followed by a series of treatments – laser fat reduction (20 minutes), muscle fat burn (15 minutes) and skin tightening (10 minutes). Depending on your personal goals and requirements, your practitioner may also prescribe a period of post-treatment exercise. Is it comfortable? During laser fat reduction treatment, you will typically experience little sensation other than slight warmth in the target area. The fatburning step is more like a vigorous massage sensation – the intensity will be adjusted to avoid discomfort, but you will certainly feel your muscles being activated in the treatment area to burn fat. The third step, which is to tighten any loose skin, results in a heating sensation but, again, this will be delivered at a level acceptable to you.
When will I see results? Often results can be seen immediately and improve with every treatment. Over the course of eight sessions, you can achieve dramatic reshaping of the body, fat reduction and cellulite improvement, and skin conditioning and tightening. During and after your Xero treatment you will feel lighter, slimmer and more energetic. Book your first free consultation now. Call 17 830-730.
Is it safe? Yes, independent clinical studies have shown Xero technology to be completely safe. The process causes no damage and gives immediate results – your cells remain intact, they just become smaller as the excess fat is removed. Is it suitable for everyone? Xero can be used on both men and women and can treat all areas of the body, except female breast tissue. As with any treatment, people with certain medical conditions are not recommended to use Xero, but your practitioner will go through a medical questionnaire at your initial consultation. How long will results last? Xero reprogrammes your body to achieve its optimal fat-burning state by removing excess fat, boosting metabolism, increasing fitness and promoting healthy nutrition. The Xero programme will deliver results, but it is up to you to maintain them by continuing your new healthy lifestyle. Further treatment or following a maintenance programme can correct any future diet indulgences or help you target other areas of the body should you wish to do so.

Hydrate, Hydrate! As the island feels the effects of its hottest summer ever, clinical dietician Chona Cortez explains the importance of hydration. With temperatures averaging 48°C, the combination of intense heat and high humidity has made this summer uncomfortable. We feel thirsty and sweat more and it’s important not to become dehydrated. There is more to dehydration than thirst. It can be a serious condition leading to problems ranging from swollen feet or headache to lifethreatening illnesses such as heat stroke. Here in Bahrain, heat stress is a major concern related to occupational health. An industrial company survey carried out in 2016 found 56 per cent of workers were dehydrated at the beginning of their shifts. Employees were encouraged to drink water at the beginning of their shift and during work hours, helping to reduce instances of heat exhaustion. Water is essential, making up around 60 per cent of the human body. The brain and heart 110 September 2017
are composed of 73 per cent water and the lungs about 83 per cent. Thus, drinking fluids is crucial to staying healthy and maintaining the functions of the body’s systems. Fluids carry nutrients to the cells, flush bacteria from the bladder and prevent constipation. Water remains the best thing to stay hydrated. Other sources include fruits and vegetables which contain a high percentage of water. Sports drinks with electrolytes may also be useful for individuals who exercise, though they tend to be high in sugar and calories. The same applies to fruit juices or sugary drinks, such as soda. Caffeine-containing drinks, such as coffee and tea, act as a diuretic and cause you to lose more fluids. Around 1 to 1.5 litres per day for a healthy person is enough to prevent dehydration. Certain medical conditions may require less or more fluids, so it’s best to consult your doctor or dietitian for specific recommendations. Call 17 812-000 or email diet@bsh.com.bh.

It hones in on the core issues and gives an unbiased, holistic overview of both the macro- and micro-impacts of these security-related events. Our offering is also unique in that it focuses on MENA, which, as a region, is prone to volatility and fast-changing dynamics.”
Groundbreaking Project Agreed BFG International, a Bahrain-based global leader in composites technology, is set to roll out a groundbreaking Industry 4.0 project at its facility in Mina Salman. The industrial automation initiative is being supported by the Economic Development Board and Tamkeen. It involves automating BFG International’s factories and integrating all its business areas through a core software supplied by partner firm QiO Technologies. This will offer the manufacturer complete transparency along its entire supply chain and optimise its production process. Industry 4.0 is the growing trend of automation and data exchange in manufacturing technologies. It uses cyber-physical systems, the Internet of Things, cloud computing and cognitive computing to create ‘smart factories’ which can respond to changes in real time and become more efficient. The agreement for the project was signed by Tamkeen chief executive Dr Ebrahim Mohammed Janahi, and BFG International Group president, Dr Samer Al Jishi. 114 September 2017

Aug 22 – Sept 21 Romantically, things may stall a little for you this September and you could find yourself backtracking to find out just where you might have gone wrong. The number one ‘suspect’ here could be assumption. If you’ve been reading too much into a person’s words or actions, then you only have yourself to blame. The best course of action to take is a nonconfrontational one. Try not to force the issue and things may turn back in your favour. It won’t be easy but it will allow you to see things for how they really are. Too often you let yourself get carried away by your overactive mind. LIBRA September 22 – October 21
If you end up in the firing line this month then you only have yourself to blame. You’ve been playing an unsettling game with a colleague now for far too long and it is only a matter of time before they snap. And snap they will, with quite explosive results. Do your best to accept your mistake and put matters back on track or you could lose yourself a powerful ally. On the home front, talks of a move to grander places could have you looking ahead to 2018 with a sense of excitement, whilst a birthday bash will reveal a secret or two that may leave you red-faced before the evening is out. Card of the Month — The Hermit
SCORPIO October 22 – November 21 A recent separation is still playing on your mind and the prospect of a long and unpredictable end to 2017 isn’t something you’re looking forward. Too many painful memories still lurk in familiar locations and you will not be motivated to do much as that would take you out of your comfort zone. However, an unexpected turn of events in a restaurant around the 11th will quickly focus your mind on other things and, before the month is out, you may find that the heartache has lessened considerably because of what happens on that night. It will be significant enough to open your eyes and will introduce you to opportunities you didn’t even consider only weeks before. Card of the Month — The King of Cups 118 September 2017
SAGITTARIUS November 22 – December 21
This month will start with a bang as a major shake-up at work sees you pushed into a post you’re not comfortable with, leaving you to assess your options for the future. This isn’t a bad thing. If you are honest with yourself, your current employment has lost a great deal of the spark and challenge it once offered and the change in personnel at the top hasn’t helped matters either. So, rather than let yourself get down with the situation, see it as a motivating factor. Use this minor set-back to get yourself on the way towards a new career – something you want to do. The outcome to all of this promises to give a positive shine to everything else in your life. Card of the Month — The Two of Cups
CAPRICORN December 22 – January 21
Love is very much in the air this month as a chance meeting at a business function leaves you all in a spin. It’s not something you were looking for, nor something you were expecting, but it is nevertheless going to whisk you off your feet in quite a big way. Where it may all lead is unclear now but you are a sign who falls easily into relationships and you only start to have cold feet when more committed matters are discussed. For the time being enjoy it but just be prepared for something a little different and more unusual to happen over the coming weeks. There’s more of the extraordinary about this entire affair then you might realise right now. Card of the Month — The Ace of Pentacles
AQUARIUS January 22 – February 21
Over the last year or so you may have relaxed on the discipline front somewhat and one child has been quick to take advantage of that change. It will be best for all involved if you quickly revert to how things used to be or there may be some difficult hurdles to overcome very soon. On the financial front, there could be a slight improvement to your money difficulties towards the end of the month, but this isn’t a sign to suddenly abandon caution, so put any additional funds away to help get you through the last of the lean times ahead. There will be time to enjoy yourself later in the year but for the foreseeable future the catch word is still save, rather than spend. Card of the Month — Temperance
PISCES February 21 – March 20
Watching someone else take the credit for something you instigated is never easy and no one would blame you for taking action when you realise what has happened. However, you have somehow managed to make a powerful enemy at work and if you do want to unmask him, it may take significantly more guile than you are usually used to employing. Not that you are incapable of a little ‘behind the scenes’ manipulation; your secretive nature makes you perfect for such an endeavour. To complete the exercise, you will need to seek an ally to aid you in your task and the person most suited to help you could turn out to be the most unlikely accomplice of all. Card of the Month — The Nine of Swords
ARIES March 21 – April 20
Your stubborn nature has made you few friends over the last few months and whilst you sometimes regret what you do or say later, there is still something inside you that makes you repeat this behaviour with alarming regularity. Seemingly, you just don’t want to learn. However, this September you might finally meet your match with some explosive results as you clash with a work colleague over a personal matter which, in truth, should never have even made it into the office. Although you won’t come to blows over the whole affair, you could isolate yourself, all because of an insignificant matter. Try and show some restraint – just this once. You’ll be amazed by the results! Card of the Month — The Star www.bahrainthismonth.com
advertisers index TAURUS April 21 – May 20 Another month, another set of exciting challenges and opportunities. That’s the frame of mind you will find yourself in this September and this positive nature will help you achieve some great things in the coming months. There will be hurdles thrown in your way but it won’t be anything you can’t handle so long as you keep focused and optimistic. You may also be presented with a job offer from another company and whilst it might initially seem like a step backwards, the long-term possibilities mean that you could quickly move beyond your present situation and take your career into a whole new, much wider arena. Card of the Month — The Two of Swords
GEMINI May 21 – June 20 A letter in the post from an unknown admirer is going to spark a very exciting emotional adventure for you over the next few weeks, with more than a few surprises set to cause a stir to your September. At the back of your mind you may even have an idea of who might be behind the correspondence but, until you have conclusive proof, don’t make any kind of significant move. All will be revealed before too long. On the work front, you will be asked to cover for a sick colleague only to find out that the person concerned has been hiding some important information from senior management. How you deal with this will determine much about how your year develops from here. Card of the Month — Death CANCER June 21 – July 20 Issues that have been mounting over recent months are set to come to the boil, and whilst you might be despondent about the outcome, you can’t plead ignorance and say you haven’t seen it coming. September is going to be your time of revelation, waking you to the realisation that you simply cannot have what your heart presently desires and you should pursue an alternative route towards emotional happiness. No matter how much it hurts, you have to let go. Although it might not seem like it now, believe me, there is something better waiting out there. Card of the Month — The Ten of Wands
September is going to find many of you in sombre mood and a little uncertain about how the rest of the year is likely to pan out. Much of this trepidation extends from what you feel is a ‘sticky patch’ in a current relationship and you are worried that there is something important your partner is keeping from you. Obviously, the best way to alleviate your concerns is to confront the matter head on, and even if that thought makes you uncomfortable, there is no alternative. Put aside a quiet night and make sure the two of you are alone. This isn’t something that will be solved immediately. Card of the Month — The Queen of Swords
