Nursery celebrations

HE Simon Martin

A Day In The Life With DSAME and colleagues

In a departure from our normal interviews, for this years UK in Bahrain feature we give an insight into the day of British Ambassador, HE Simon Martin. “I’m not a very early riser, if it can be avoided,” His Excellency confesses, adding that exercise – he is a keen runner – happens in the evening, if there’s time. “I’m very lucky to live in this residence, the run around the grounds is a half kilometre.” Most days, breakfast is an outside affair shared with wife, Sophie, at which the couple check and coordinate their diaries, since they often attend events together. However, on our example day, the ambassador begins with a working breakfast with the Defence Security Advisor Middle East (DSAME), Sir John Lorimer, the Head of UK Maritime Component Command, and Defence Attaché, Cdr Paul Windsar.

4 April 2019

DSAME is a regular visitor to the Kingdom and will be updated on any developments since his last visit before heading off to meetings with senior BDF personnel. The ambassador would then continue with his day by running through his upcoming schedule with executive assistant, Christine, and making time for embassy staff to discuss and update him on their different areas of responsibility. One of the subjects of discussion is consular cases. There are nearly 10,000 British people living in Bahrain and the embassy’s consular role is to provide assistance to those British nationals overseas that need help most. His Excellency says: “When you look at the work of the British Foreign Office, through its embassies, it focuses on three areas: promotion of national security, not just through defence but also political relations; advancement of prosperity; and protection of our people. “We have a number of British nationals in Bahrain who are unable to leave because of travel bans. These are mandated through the courts for disputes and debts. My vice consul keeps me updated on current cases and we will discuss how the embassy can be of assistance.” Getting ready to head out to his next meeting, the ambassador encounters his head of press and public relations, Cheryl, who wants him to sign off on a new project, about which he is very excited. “It’s to launch the Ambassador for a Day initiative to coincide with International Women’s Day [in which the student winner of a competition will shadow HE]. It’s not just a gimmick, there are two main purposes,” he explains. www.bahrainthismonth.com

unitedkingdomsupplement

His Excellency also gets to have some fun with Chelsea Pensioners at the Poppy Ball and, below, with Sophie at the Rugby Club for the West Asia Cup Final

“The first is that I’m always trying to find ways to make Britain and the embassy accessible, explaining to different groups of Bahrainis why we need each other. The competition requires young Bahrainis to produce a short video explaining how they would influence change, which will be fun for them and give them a chance to practise their language skills. “The second aspect, and this is something that is an FCO global priority, is about promoting women’s empowerment through supporting women in public life, politics and positions of influence. In Bahrain, this is already happening. There are lots of women in very senior positions in public life, who are great role models. The competition is open to female students, aged 16-21. We will announce the winner at the birthday party for Her Majesty the Queen, in April.” For his first official engagement of the day, the ambassador dashes across town as he has been invited to visit a British nursery school’s 10th anniversary celebration, where, he says with glee, he has been promised “flowers, songs and cake”. Though that would probably be reason enough to head classroom-wards, His Excellency says: “It’s one of many British educational institutions and it’s a point of pride that parents want to send their children not just to English-speaking schools, but to those that follow the British curriculum. I think it reinforces the bond between nations and creates a familiarity that helps us in many ways.” His next port of call sees him rejoining DSAME for a call on Crown Prince Shaikh Salman bin Isa Al Khalifa, who is also Deputy Supreme Commander of the Bahrain Defence Force. “He [the CP] has a huge role in the www.bahrainthismonth.com

defence of Bahrain,” says His Excellency. “Defence is also an important plank of our role and relationship. HRH the Duke of York opened the British Naval Support Facility, the first of its kind east of Suez since the former HMS Jufair closed in 1971. This is a very important example of the UK’s commitment to the Gulf and the wider region. In its first year of operation, it’s already proved its worth, not just for UK sailors but also for joint training. There will shortly be a Type 23 frigate permanently stationed there.” Then it’s back to the embassy to meet with the Australian Ambassador visiting from Riyadh, Ridwaan Jadwat, who is also accredited to Bahrain, Oman and Yemen. When countries do not have their own embassies in Bahrain, they rely on their diplomatic colleagues to keep them updated on issues such as changes in government, recent elections, local action plans and the like. It is now lunchtime, and, while still working, His Excellency is joined by his wife, Sophie, at a Bahrain British Business Forum (BBBF)

meeting where he listens to a speaker from the Economic Development Board (EDB). He says: “The BBBF is the most vibrant, busy and effective networking platform that I’ve worked with at any time in my career. It brings together Bahraini and British businesses and is great for developing contacts; it also has a number of special interest groups. The EDB also has a special focus on the UK, so I’m happy to support the event.” Later in the afternoon there is a planning meeting for a joint working group which will involve ministers from Bahrain and Britain getting together in the coming weeks to discuss collaboration mechanisms in areas such as education, sports, research, environment, commerce and trade and investment. For most of us, that would be the end of the working day but the Ambassador frequently attends evening events – his record is four in one night! This evening, he and Sophie are off to an art exhibition in Muharraq, which is being launched by HE Shaikha Mai bint Mohammed Al Khalifa, president of Bahrain Authority for Culture and Antiquities, along with Shaikha Halla. “This is something we want to support because the whole regeneration of Muharraq is a source of great pride and interest, particularly because the Prince of Walesfounded Prince’s Fund has been working with the Ministry of Housing for the last six years advising on how to build in sustainability and the most effective new building design for Askar; they are now helping to formulate a master plan for Muharraq.” Smiling, he adds: “I don’t think I’m expected to speak – but I always have something up my sleeve.” Then, it’s back to the embassy for 6.30pm to host a drinks reception for British fintech startup Adsertor, which launched in Bahrain Bay about a year ago. It is making an impact with its data integration software products and is talking to Bahrain University about setting up a centre of excellence for young Bahrainis to develop data skills. “I’m happy and feel it’s useful to host an event like this,” says the ambassador. “I expect this to build around the Gulf and have invited 70 or 80 potential collaborators – the main purpose is to raise awareness of this exciting new development.” With the reception done, it’s time for Facetime with family and friends back in the UK and around the world, many of whom will be visiting during Formula One. And, after a long day, the ambassadorial head can finally hit the pillow for a well-deserved sleep. April 2019 5

The Importance of Military and Family Alliances engagements. Our UK-Bahrain relationship is over 200 years in the making, is strong and we seek ways to continue to work closely and achieve stronger bonds. My father always taught me that it is important never to take a friendship for granted. As the British Defence Attaché, I am the Chief of Defence Staff’s personal representative in Bahrain. My working day, every day and evening, is extremely rewarding and varied. It requires me to mix diplomacy, intellect, tact, strategic thinking and decisiveness, initiative; have moral courage, independence, maturity and confidence. It can be challenging but is always enjoyable. What does the Royal Navy do here and what do the new Naval Support Facilities (NSF) bring to Bahrain? The British Embassy has a very close relationship with the Royal Navy in Bahrain. The role in both Bahrain and the Middle East is very broad and can be best understood in the following activities:

Cdr Paul Windsar RN enlightens BTM about his role as British Defence Attaché and an important family connection to the island.

little bit deeper, it is people, friends and family that matter the most and I would consider to be the best part

Preparedness for contingencies – The yearround presence of high-readiness Royal Navy assets provides the UK government with a choice of options in the event of a humanitarian crisis or a deterioration in regional security.

Please tell us a little about your background. You have built an excellent military career over 35-plus years. Would you say life in the military has benefitted you in both professional and personal aspects? I have enjoyed, and still enjoy each day, every aspect of being in the military; from an immediate sense of belonging at the age of 16, on the day I joined the Royal Navy, in 1980, through the training and experiences I have been fortunate to be a part of; seeing and sharing the ups and downs in the world that have, on occasions, required us to fight to protect all that, and those, we hold dear. As well, of course, as celebrating momentous occasions – such as the end of the Berlin Wall, Royal Weddings and births, military unions and unique periods in my 35-plus years. However, shining bright as a beacon, in among all the positives of my career, and also during the unsettled times where we all have to dig that

What does your role as British Defence Attaché entail? I am very privileged to work within a close-knit and friendly British Embassy with a great team who made me feel welcome. For us all, relationships and being one cohesive group is key to supporting His Excellency the Ambassador and ensuring our wider joined-up friendships with Bahrain. In Bahrain I am fortunate to wear four hats: that of Naval Attaché, Military Attaché (land), Air Attaché and overall Defence Attaché. I have a small, focused and dedicated Defence Section consisting of an Army Staff Sergeant and a UK locally employed civilian. We join with our embassy colleagues to promote and achieve government policies. Specifically, my team builds UK-Bahrain military relationships, security, capacity, capability and prosperity with a defence focus but within a broader fusion of diplomatic, political and military

Disrupting piracy – Piracy threatens international shipping in the Gulf of Aden, Indian Ocean and Horn of Africa and has a knock-on effect on the world economy. It has a human cost for merchant seafarers and their families. We realise that navies cannot stop piracy alone, as it has its roots in political instability ashore, but they can deter and disrupt attacks, making it harder for pirates to operate. The Royal Navy deploys frigates and Royal Fleet Auxiliary support ships, together with maritime patrol helicopters and Royal Marine boarding teams with medical backup. Royal Navy personnel often lead or augment command teams directing multinational operations. At the height of piracy in 2013, a World Bank report suggested that piracy in this region was costing the global economy USD18 Billion as shippers were forced to change trading routes and pay higher insurance premiums.

unitedkingdomsupplement Preventing terrorism – Many of the UK’s allies in this area face a threat from terrorists in the region. Royal Navy warships and helicopters continue to work alongside other nations to deter or disrupt terrorist attacks and prevent related illegal activities such as human trafficking, drug and charcoal smuggling. Providing well developed mine-hunting expertise – Mines are cheap, easy to use and have the potential to close important waterways. It is essential that the UK has the capability to undertake mine-hunting operations wherever there are large concentrations of shipping or international trade routes. The Royal Navy permanently has four mine hunters in Bahrain (rotating personnel every six months) to develop and retain expertise and experience in warm-water operations. A Royal Fleet Auxiliary support ship is also here in Bahrain to serve as a floating headquarters for Commander UK Mine Countermeasures Force (COMUKMCMFOR) during large-scale mine-hunting exercises. Supporting merchant shipping – The UK Maritime Trade Operation (UKMTO) is a small cell of Royal Navy personnel based in Dubai, which tracks shipping movements and runs a 24-hour reporting service to enable swift communication between merchant shipping and naval forces in the event of an attack or suspicious activity. Members visit ships in the nearby ports of Jebel Ali and Fujairah to provide advice on maritime security. The role of the UK NSF – The NSF has now been operational for one year. It has proven successful in supporting the UK Naval presence in the region. The accommodation is clean, modern and comfortable; with a well-equipped gym, café, shop and recreational areas. The feeling of ‘all of one team’ emanates and is continuing to self-generate. The NSF is a cornerstone of the UK’s ability to maintain a forward presence in the region, and is very important in our defence cooperation programme. Bahrain remains critical to our plans for Gulf security. The Bahrain-owned, UK-operated, NSF underlines the importance of our mutual relationship and permanent presence in Bahrain and the Gulf more widely. Our governments recognise the strategic importance of moving forward together and the mutual benefits this brings. This includes nurturing a shared UK-Bahrain NSF vision that, if correctly developed and executed, will add much weight and longevity to our joint current strategic and maritime vision in the Gulf and the wider region. www.bahrainthismonth.com

Cdr Windsar’s parents in Bahrain

You have a strong family connection with Bahrain, of which you are immensely proud and fond. Please tell us about it? My family started its warm and affectionate love affair with the Pearl of the Gulf in 1953 when my Royal Naval father first sailed into Bahrain. He was a ‘writer’ (or scribe) by trade in the Royal Navy Secretariat branch, and, having written his memories and taken many photos, he was meticulous about inscribing where and when and what the pictures were, to send home to my mother. After his first time here, he sailed from the island with his ship but soon returned, with my mother, for a more permanent ‘posting’. So began our family history and firm footprints in the sand of the Island. He was based at HMS JUFAIR (as was) and they lived in the base and also moved to a small apartment behind Manama Souq, where my elder brother was born, in a small ‘yellow block bungalow’ along Shk Esa (Isa) Avenue. They returned to the UK in the early 1960s and over the years between then and now, Bahrain was woven into my life as I grew up, with family stories, and cine films, of Bahraini friends, culture and sights that always came naturally into conversation and the delicious smells and spices from my parents’ kitchen. My father always taught me that personal relationships build trust into alliances – particularly here in Bahrain. He also said that “sometimes the meeting [with a person] happening is a most desired and rewarding

outcome in itself.” My father unfortunately passed away this time last year but, knowing I had been appointed as the British Defence Attaché, he and mum managed to share some last stories with me, and send me out with a box of photographs, stories, smiles and my own memories to make. He asked that I bring his love and spirit back to Bahrain. Which I hope I am humbly doing.

unitedkingdomsupplement a project and discussed the idea of merging old and new. Next thing, we were playing shows across the world and we had signed our first artist. You’re described as ‘cratediggers’; for the uninitiated, please explain. “Cratedigger (plural cratediggers) (slang). A person who habitually looks through crates of vinyl records at music shops, especially in pursuit of rare or interesting albums.” That’s the traditional definition, but for us it’s much more – looking for films, photos and stories of our region. Not just in record stores but in everyday life!

Do You Disco? BTM caught up with Bahrain-bred musical duo Dar Disku as they prepare to strengthen their British connections with a UK tour.

So, who are Dar Disku? Dar Disku are Vish Mhatre and Maz Almaskati. Dar Disku is a record label and collective formed in Bahrain and now living in the UK. The label acts as a platform for creatives, including musicians, artists, filmmakers and more, to showcase their work. What’s the Bahrain-British connection? We moved to the UK in 2011 for education. Our connection with Britain existed much before this though as we grew up in Bahrain and went to a British international school. Being in this atmosphere, we had many friends from the UK who introduced us to the Brit sound that was so big at the time, all the way from UK hip hop and grime, with artists such as Wiley and Dizzee Rascal, to the label scene such as XL Records. Hearing this sound really inspired us to move to the UK. Where did you meet? We met at school in Bahrain. We have known each other for over 15 years and are pretty much brothers by now. We met each other at friends’ house parties and realised we always had similar taste in music. We would share mixtapes and compilations. What’s in a name, why Dar Disku? Dar Disku translates to home of the disco. It was appropriate because we wanted to name the label after the sound that inspired us. When and how did you start working together? We had an initial meeting in east London during the autumn of 2018. We sat down and realised that the Middle Eastern music scene was on fire and we also needed to give back to the region that made us fall in love with music. We thought about putting a name to

8 April 2019

What are some of the gems you’ve come across in your searching? Our favourites right now are a disco version of Sidi Mansour which seems to light up dancefloors. We also found an old Turkish disco hit called Kent Yasami by Senay which is a heater. We recently found an Arabic version of the Macarena which seems to go down a treat. How would you describe your sound? A sonic blend of the pre-millennium Arabian disco, dabke and folk sounds within the modern Arabian music scene. Our sets range from ‘60s Arabic swing to red line clipping dabke and Arabic trap! What inspires you? Pretty much anything that has a story behind it. Whether it’s a new artist with Arabian roots, a film, someone’s photography collection, old posters. It all inspires our workflow and process. You’ve had some pretty amazing reactions so far, how does it feel to be getting your music out there? So, so good. We will never tire of meeting people we don’t know and hearing how they came across our music. The press response has been very encouraging with people like [UK magazine] Clash, Resident Advisor and Mille World saying some nice things. This means a lot as these are publications we look at for inspiration. We also have so much fun during our live shows and seeing people from all backgrounds (Arab or not) dance! You’ve got a tour starting in the UK this month, will you be coming to play in Bahrain and the wider region any time soon? We hope to be back in autumn and are currently looking at shows in Dubai, Lebanon and more. If you want us in a city near you, get in touch! We love playing new places. Where can local fans hear your music? You can find out everything about us on www. dardisku.com where you can catch up with latest releases, live dates, Spotify playlists and get in touch. www.bahrainthismonth.com

Excellence in Education

The British Preparatory School

For more than 10 years, the British Preparatory School (BPS) has been one of the top contenders for early education on the island. The school provides young learners with an educational environment that makes them feel secure and stimulates their minds to facilitate learning. It aims to help every child reach his or her full potential. At its helm is Sandy Whitford, MBE, a teacher with tremendous experience in the field of early learning. She taught in the UK, Oman and Abu Dhabi before joining Bahrain’s St Christopher’s School in 1980, where she was head teacher for 20 years. Armed with years of teaching experience, she opened the British Preparatory School in 2008 and is primarily responsible for the reputation it enjoys. Today, the BPS has expanded to three villas and two large portacabins, and has 180 students, aged between 18 months and six years. The institution prepares children for future learning by building firm foundations, confidence and self-esteem, as well as grooming them for entry into the larger British curriculum schools. It is well-known for its ESL (English as a Second Language) programmes (for non-native speakers) and has a high number of students being accepted by the British School of Bahrain and St Christopher’s School, which also recommend BPS when they do not have available space. BPS has continued to grow this year with two forms of entry in all year groups. In June last year, the establishment celebrated its 10th anniversary with His Excellency Simon Martin, British Ambassador, in attendance. He was highly impressed with the diction of the children during a musical presentation which was followed by him cutting the anniversary cake. Sandy has facilitated teaching courses through the Ministry of Education for Bahraini teachers and, in 2014, was made a Member of the Order of the British Empire (MBE) for services to education and the British community in Bahrain.

High-Quality Education Nadeen School, founded in 1977, is well-known for its holistic approach to education and for celebrating the unique, individual talents of children with diverse backgrounds and abilities. In January this year, Nadeen School was shortlisted from more than 200 elite international schools at the International School Awards in London for its Creative Curriculum Initiative. It is one of the founding members of the British Schools of the Middle East (BSME) and an accredited member of the group. Nadeen School is also one of only two British Schools Overseas (BSO) schools in Bahrain, registered and recognised by the British Government and Department for Education. Combining the best of many different education systems, with hightech education at one end of the spectrum and forest schools at the other, is the key to Nadeen’s success. Fundamental to its ethos and practice is the whole-child and child-centred approach to education. The creative, individualised approach to the curriculum and to all students ensures students’ success, both personally and academically. This family-style school, with the motto “Small School – Big Family,” is further enhanced through its green spaces, school farm, cosy campus, and an “Open Door” policy. Parents and visitors are welcomed into the school at any time. Currently located in Umm Al Hassam, the school is actively seeking a new site and purpose-built campus to provide even more to both

students and the community. It is looking forward to the next stage of development and offers thanks to all of its current and past families and staff for their support over the years.

New Flight Launched The UK’s national carrier, British Airways, has announced the launch of a third route to Saudi Arabia in December. The Dammam flight will use a Boeing 777 flying via Bahrain. It will be one of the world’s shortest Boeing 777 routes and will allow the airline to replace the limousine service it currently operates between Bahrain and Dammam which involves a wait at Bahrain International Airport before travellers undertake the last leg of their journey.

Record Drugs Bust

Future Education

A British Navy warship, HMS Dragon, which is part of the Bahrain-based Combined Task Force, made a recordbreaking seizure of 2,540kg of hashish from a dhow in the Arabian Sea. The drugs stash had been hidden in fishing nets and beneath the engine and this eighth seizure for the Type 45 destroyer gives it the record for the highest number of drugs busts, worth a total of more than BD72 million. HMS Dragon is part of operations

aimed clamping down on terrorist organisations and others using sea routes for smuggling illicit cargo including narcotics, UN-embargoed weapons and Somali charcoal. A Royal Navy statement said: “Flying a routine dawn mission, the crew of the ship’s Wildcat helicopter spotted a suspicious-looking boat from the air. “HMS Dragon, which was beginning her journey back to the UK, immediately altered course to intercept the vessel.”

Sporting Connection

St Christopher’s School has launched the Bahrain Future Learning Summit, an ambitious event to connect students, parents and staff with global innovators and industry leaders to exploring what it takes to be ‘future-ready’ and how stakeholders can be engaged through a modern approach to learning. The event will introduce audiences to exciting sessions, expert presenters and topical streams, including; Wellness & Mindfulness, Imposter Syndrome, Retrieval Practice, Sketch-noting, Digital Literacy, Deeper Digital Reading, Philosophy for Children (P4C), VR/AR, Gamification, Evidence-Based Learning Strategies, and more. Keynote Speakers will include Ben Towers who, at just 20 years old, is considered one of ‘the most influential entrepreneurs on the planet’. He will be speaking about the mindset and skillset required for the 21st Century. The school’s own innovators will be presenting from St Christopher’s, as well as friends from the British School of Bahrain, Riffa Views, Bahrain Polytechnic, and JESS Dubai, who will be sharing their expertise through workshop sessions. 16 April 2019

Schoolboy Adam Rajab is a great example of the close ties between Bahrain and the UK. The 10-year- old, whose mum Anne is Northern Irish and dad Ebrahim is Bahraini-British, is a talented ice skater. He first took to the rink in here in the Kingdom in November 2016 working under coach Michelle Ruh. But, since, like many youngsters, he travels back to his mum’s home country during the holidays, he also joined the Dempsey Andrews Ice Skating Academy team in Dundonald. Thanks to training five times a week at Bahrain’s Funland, he was able to join the team a few weeks ago when members competed in recent

championships in Milton Keynes, UK, wowing the judges to take third place among 300 competitors. And Adam was one of the stars of the show, taking first in his category – boys’ beginners.

Brit Bar Reborn One of the kingdom’s oldest and most popular British pubs has relaunched following an extensive revamp. The Exchange – An English Pub, at the Ramada Bahrain, was in need of a facelift having done long service as a favourite with both locals and expats alike for many years. It has been given an upgrade but still promises that quintessential atmosphere with billiards, darts and entertainment.

There’s also a live band and great international pub-style food. www.bahrainthismonth.com

Inverness and Loch Ness - Scotland

Off the Beaten British Path

There’s so much more to the UK than London and its surrounding cities. BTM gives you a sneak peek into other enchanting options in the British Isles.

This vibrant city in the heart of the Sottish highlands has a friendly and easy-going pace, making it a stress-free holiday destination. Inverness has a lot to offer – natural beauty, history, shopping, family day trips, cycle trails and walking tours. Take in the impressive views of this city from the top of Inverness Castle, and marvel at the beauty of St Andrews Cathedral. Historical treasures, such as Culloden Battlefield, where the English and Scots fought their last battle to determine the fate of Scotland as a British dominion, and the ancient burial site at Clava Cairns, are just two highlights. The famed Loch Ness is a short drive away. No, you won’t find any monsters here, maybe, but you will see the largest freshwater body in the British Isles, with the picturesque Urquhart Castle, one of Scotland’s largest fortifications, overlooking the lake.

Belfast – Northern Ireland

Isle of Anglesey – Wales Who can resist a stunning stretch of pristine coastline? Anglesey is that and more, where holiday makers can escape into a different world altogether. Aberlleiniog Castle is a hidden gem, with many secrets waiting to be discovered. It combines fascinating history with natural beauty, without any of the crowds, costs or hassle you find elsewhere. This island is known for its lush gardens, especially the 10 private spaces open to the public and maintained by the National Garden Scheme as well as the fairytale-like Plas Cadnant Hidden Gardens. Anglesey’s countryside has more than 220 square miles of unspoilt coast and landscapes that have been declared an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. Cors Erddreiniog is the largest of Anglesey’s fens, with a variety of habitats including extensive reed beds, woodland, heathland and small lakes, as well as specialised plants, such as the fly orchid and the carnivorous sundew. It hosts a rich assemblage of insects, especially butterflies, moths, damselflies and dragonflies. 18 April 2019

You may know that Boney M crooned about the city many moons ago, and that Game of Thrones set is in Belfast, but did you know the Titanic was built here? Recall the maritime legend in the Titanic Quarter, or lose yourself in the mystical, marvellous GoT Territory – whatever you do, it’s going to be a surreal experience. The city is an ideal family getaway, with the Ulster Museum and days spent in the wilderness or on farms, adventure activities and lots of play parks to keep teens and kids enthralled. The First World War-era warship, HMS Caroline, is a must-see floating museum with an amazing story to tell. Do not miss the imposing Belfast City Hall, Belfast Castle, the Grand Opera House and the Botanic Gardens. Cobbled alleyways come to life in the evenings with pubs, clubs, live music venues and bars inviting you to party the Belfast way.

Bath – England In days gone by, the British elite would come to Bath for the supposed healing properties of the Roman Baths dotting the city. Visitors here can still experience the preserved baths, as well a wealth of small museums housed in restored traditional buildings. The Georgian atmosphere is straight out of a Jane Austen novel, the author being one of the city’s most famous residents. The metropolis is rapidly gaining fame as a place with some serious fine dining that will delight visiting foodies. Do sink your teeth in to the famous Bath buns – sweet, currantdotted dough balls sprinkled with sugar. Tourist attractions include the iconic Royal Crescent, the majestic Circus – a street of townhouses – and the Bath Aqua Theatre of Glass amongst many others. There’s plenty to see beyond the city, too, with stunning Somerset countryside to explore, as well as attractions like Stonehenge, Avebury and Longleat Safari Park a short drive away. www.bahrainthismonth.com
