IN SYNC WITH MOTHER NATURE

he last time we caught up, you were one of only women two marine biologists in the Kingdom. What’s changed since and what are some of the greatest progressions you’ve made since then?

Not much really, I haven’t come across any other women marine biologists especially those who work on the field in Bahrain. On a more positive note, the number of young people coming into the environmental field is definitely growing as I have had a lot of youth doing degrees in environmentalrelated fields reach out to me looking for internships or ways to get into the field which is very positive and exciting! In addition, the number of women divers in Bahrain has increased significantly with diving becoming the latest trendy sport especially for young people.

What drove you to pursue a career as an ecologist?

With the shores of Bahrain as my playground during my childhood it was hard not to fall in love with the sea. I always knew I wanted to work with nature and learning how everything within an ecosystem connects fascinated me.

Ecology is the relationship and interaction among species and with their surrounding environment. However, the real fuel that made me be very committed to pursuing this career is learning and seeing how we as humans are destroying and altering this relationship, which in the end will lead to our own self-destruction.

How does having a career in the field of marine biology make you feel? Is this something you’ve always wanted to do?

It’s no secret that the environment has been gravely affected by the collective actions of the world population over the years. As one of only two female marine biologists in the Kingdom of Bahrain, Reem Al Mealla works tirelessly for the betterment of the environment. We caught up with the inspiring woman to get some insight on the current state of the environment in the Middle East, the environmental effects of COVID-19 and her search for women in the environmental field in the Arabian Gulf.

I love being a marine biologist and have always wanted to be one since I was in school although very early on I wanted to be an astronaut. It was either going up beyond the blue or dive deep into the blue that surrounds us. Being in this field makes me feel alive and it gives me a deep sense of purpose. Working on the field excites me and constantly charges my energy giving me that drive to do better. I learn so much about life just by observing other species.

We often forget that we are part of nature and not something detached. It is such a gift to be able to experience this life and hence we must do our best to live it fully whilst respecting every other species that we share this world with.

When I was younger I always felt like I needed to do so much and would get upset when things don’t go my way but now I adopt nature’s philosophy where I can, like Lao Tzu says, “Nature does not hurry, yet everything is accomplished.”

What would you say is the most memorable experience you have had as a biodiversity environmentalist to date?

One of the most memorable experiences was being able to be in Paris with climate activists throughout the negotiation period of the Paris Agreement, which was being adopted in 2015. I was surrounded by so many passionate and inspiring women environmentalists who were working hard to ensure that women and gender was included in the climate text, with references to the need for clean energies and ecological justice. Seeing their passion and hard work to co-create a world that is safe and healthy for future generations made me feel so grateful and privileged to be part of this community of women climate & environmental activists. I am deeply grateful to the Women for Environment & Development Organization (WEDO) for such an opportunity.

You recently put out a call for women working in the environmental field in the

Arabian Gulf. What do you hope to achieve through this? Yes, I’ve recently put up a call for women working within the environmental field in an effort to establish a network to connect women in the Arabian Gulf. The environmental field in general is vast and very interconnected in a complex manner.

The network makes it easier to identify who is available, with which kind of expertise and in which country.

The response has been overwhelmingly positive with many women reaching out to me to express their excitement regarding this idea as it provides them with a circle of support. The network brings together women across all environmental fields ranging from renewable energy to ecology; scientists to activists; educators to policy experts.

This network offers women in the field to collaborate, seek help, exchange expertise, ideas and support each other’s projects. This in itself can easily provide all sectors whether the public, private or non-governmental with

the expertise or people needed within the region that have the expertise to make that necessary change.

Women in this region ARE here, making a difference and this has to be known so that they are given the space and opportunity to grow.

What are your thoughts on the current state of the environment (or specifically marine environment) in the Middle East?

We are not in a great place, the Gulf countries are amongst the highest in the world in terms of carbon emissions per capita and as we all know high emissions contribute towards accelerating climate change. In addition, in terms of air quality, the Arab region was among the worst performers based on the World Health Organisation (WHO) since several Arab cities recorded levels of air pollution exceeding 5-10 times the WHO limits. It comes to no surprise then that several cities are among the 20 most polluted cities in the world. www.womanthismonth.com

PEOPLE | interview Based on a study conducted by the Global Burden of Disease, in the GCC, ambient air pollution was responsible for 13,000 premature deaths in 2017. Our marine environment isn’t doing great either, issues ranging between the decline in fish stocks to an extent that in some areas the fish stock has collapsed threatening local food security and the destruction of various habitats such as seagrass beds and other coastal habitats mainly due to reclamation and dredging activities. Habitats such as seagrass beds and mangroves serve as nurseries for various fish and marine species so their destruction makes it very difficult for species to recover.

Land use change and the expansion of urbanization has resulted in green and agricultural spaces to diminish especially in Bahrain where the green belt is now less than 1% of the country’s area.

What are your thoughts on the current pandemic and its positive or negative effects on the environment?

First off, I think the world isn’t acknowledging and is ignoring the fact that the main reason behind this pandemic is due to environmental destruction. This is caused by urbanization, rapid expansion of cities, industrialized agriculture and more have resulted in habitat destruction and biodiversity loss.

World governments are addressing the symptoms of the coronavirus pandemic but not the root causes that are influenced by human activity, which has laid the foundation for previous, current, and future pandemics.

There was a new report that has recently been

published by the United Nations Environment Programme that discusses this and how we can break the chain of transmission through rebalancing the needs of the people and the environment so that we can thrive together and fulfill each other’s needs.

The pandemic has not only taken many lives and shut down the planet for a few months but it has also severely impacted world economies with many people losing their jobs.

The waste being created due to the pandemic especially the use of disposables has increased the pressure on the already catastrophic waste crisis.

As a woman in science, what is your advice for young women hoping to pursue or make an impact in the field?

The world and field is so big, there is definitely a place for you, the world needs you, your energy and all that you can do – so go do it! If you get rejected from something – remember it is merely a re-direction to where you need to be in life. So just ride that wave, life will surprise you in the best possible way!

On a more positive note, the pandemic has contributed towards lower emissions from industries and transport giving the environment a breather, which has allowed biodiversity to flourish in many areas of the world. This in itself has really put things into perspective - we should not go back to normal, instead we should attempt to create a future where we put the environment in the centre of our life. The cost of preventing further pandemics over the next decade by protecting wildlife and forests is estimated to equate to just 2% of the estimated financial damage caused by Covid-19.

The question is, will we listen or ignore the signs and science again?

WONDERFUL WAVY HAIR

Summer is here, so what better way to have some fun in the sun than with luscious wavy hair? To get the ultimate surfer girl hair, without the damage caused by curling irons, start by shampooing and conditioning your hair before letting it air dry until it is just slightly damp. Use a comb to remove any tangles then rub in a hair-texturising product or leave-in conditioner. Next, twist your hair and put it up in a messy bun. Once your hair is completely dry, take down your hair and gently separate the segments with your fingers. If you would like more defined waves, divide your hair into multiple, smaller buns.

RAVISHING RETRO HAIR

Next, section off your hair and using a fine-tooth comb tease sections of your hair and carefully pint them at the crown of your head overlapping each other. DAMAGE CONTROL 4 DIY Hair Repairing Masks

Styling your hair on the regular comes at a price. If your tresses have faced the brunt of it and are now damaged, try these DIY hair masks to restore them to its former glory. The rule of them is to mash all the ingredients together and leave them on for at least 3 or 4 hours before rinsing your hair.

HAIR-REPAIRING BANANA MASK Blend together two over-ripe bananas, a tablespoon each of coconut and olive oil, and two tablespoons of honey.

CONDITIONING AVOCADO MASK

SULTRY SPIRAL CURLS

You don’t need a curling iron to rock spiral curls; all you need is a styling product and every bobby pin you can get your hands on! Take small sections of your wet hair and carefully roll them on your finger before pinning them in place against your scalp. You could cover your hair with the spirals and leave them overnight with a shower cap on to hold them in place. The next morning, unpin your hair, but do not brush it. This look takes patience and precision but the curls are guaranteed to last all day.

Mash together one ripe avocado, half a glass of milk and a tablespoon of olive oil.

MOISTURISING EGG MASK Beat together three large eggs and three tablespoons of olive oil. Remember to gently wash this mask out with cold water.

SHINE-RESTORING STRAWBERRY MASK Blend together a bowl full of strawberries, two tablespoons of honey and a tablespoon of olive oil.

Meatless Mondays Explained we’re on a constant quest to improve our health and wellbeing, sometimes finding ourselves giving up whole groups of food all together. for a lot of people, however, it might seem like too much of a challenge to go completely vegetarian. if you’d like to ease your way into a vegetarian diet or probably just cleanse your system once a week, an easy way to start might be meatless mondays!

What are Meatless Mondays?

Meatless Mondays is a non-profit health initiative, launched in 2003, which encourages people around the world to go meatless once a week. The movement aims to improve people’s health and that of the planet too by reducing our carbon footprint.

WHY GO MEATLESS? Going meatless once a week is said to have several positive effects on various ailments, apart from the added benefit of saving the environment by saving resources.

PREVENT HEART DISEASE AND STROKE Vegetarians are 36% less likely than meat eaters to suffer from metabolic syndrome – excess belly fat and high blood triglycerides that increase your risk for heart problems.

A study indicated that each daily serving of fruits or vegetables was associated with a 4% decline in coronary heart disease and a 5% lower risk of stroke.

LIMIT CANCER RISK Consuming more antioxidant-rich foods such as fruits and vegetables results in lower cancer rates. If you also target organically grown produce, you’re likely to decrease your exposure to carcinogenic pesticides too.

FIGHT DIABETES Research suggests that plant-based diets, especially those that are low in processed meats can reduce your risk of type 2 diabetes.

It can also decrease your total calorie consumption, which helps you obtain and maintain a healthy weight, a key component to preventing and treating the not-so-sweet disease.

REDUCE STRESS A recent study stated that people who adopted a vegetarian diet reduced their stress levels by 39% after just 2 weeks on their new diet. The mood boost is attributed to plant compounds that fight oxidative stress in your body.

BATTLES OBESITY People on plant-based, vegetarian diets tend to have a significantly lower Body Mass Index (BMI). This may be in part because plant-based diets are rich in fiber which contribute to fullness, resulting in lower calorie intake and less overeating.

IMPROVE YOUR NUTRITION Going meatless encourages consumption of plant-based sources of protein like beans and peas. Consuming beans and results in a higher intake of fiber, protein, folate, zinc, iron and magnesium. Cook up a storm For your Meatless Mondays, get excited and don’t just cook a dish you normally would, but without meat. If you do it this way, you’re more likely to get bored, revert to your old ways and miss the meat. Instead, buy a few vegetarian or vegan cookbooks or scour the internet and keep it interesting Plan ahead and get your groceries Choose what you’d like to eat ahead of time,

then do your grocery shopping. This way, your fridge will be stocked with lots of fresh fruits, veggies and perhaps interesting ingredients like tofu, Quorn and more, so it will be easier for you to stick with the meatless diet. Get creative!

Pack your lunch the night before It can be stressful packing your lunch on a weekday, so pack it the night before. If you’re putting a salad together, make sure you don’t throw on the dressing till right before you eat it to avoid it being a soggy mess.

Get your friends or family on board You’re more likely to stick to the plan if you have a friend or family member on board with you. So maybe post a picture online and let them know what you’ll be doing to spread some awareness. The more the merrier.

MONTESSORI AT HOME, THIS SUMMER.

For parents and kids, this summer is going to be different from any summer we've known before. While many of the usual summer activities are still on the menu, many are not. So how are we going to keep kids busy this summer?

Setting up a few areas in your home where your child can play independently will allow him to have fun playing on his own, while you recharge.

There are many creative ideas for boredom busters out there, but the Montessori way takes a slightly different approach to summer boredom. In a Montessori mindset, the role of the adult is to prepare the environment, rather than to entertain the child. This means setting up a space filled with simplicity, beauty and interesting things—encouraging independent play and learning.

You can do a lot to help your child successfully entertain himself through how you set up their environment.

Montessori environments are simple, organized and allow children to access all of the activities they may want to complete on their own.

To replicate this at home, look around your child's room and try to identify anything they haven't played with in the last two weeks. Then put it away in a closet. Bring it out a few months later when it will seem new again.

It can seem baffling when children say they're bored when they have so many toys, but sometimes they are just overwhelmed by choice or clutter. Fewer toys can often be more engaging.

Next, take a look at how the room is set up. Can your child reach his toys and books by himself, or are they too high on a shelf? Are things organized in a logical way? Does everything have a specific place where it belongs?

These things may seem insignificant, but many young children have a strong sense of order and it can be hard for them to concentrate or really delve into playing if things are too chaotic.

Here are Montessori-friendly areas you might include in your child's space to encourage independent play this summer:

ART Designate a small shelf or corner for an art area for your child. For a young child, it can be

helpful to have each art activity on its own tray.

You can switch out the art supplies throughout the summer as you notice their interest waning.

FOOD PREP Many children love preparing food and there are so many fun food prep activities that toddlers and older children can complete by themselves.

Clear off a small shelf or drawer in the kitchen for your child's kitchen tools, and food prep activities so that they can choose what they want. A simple one to start with for young children is peeling an orange. All you need is a small tray with two bowls, one for the orange peel and one for the orange slices.

Older children can do things like make a salad or a sandwich. Just show your child how to use the tools safely and how to clean up.

SCIENCE AND NATURE Choose a small area of your home to serve as a science and nature center. This could simply

be a little table in your child's room. Include books about plants, animals, geography, and whatever else you notice your child is interested in.

Find a little box or basket to use for a nature collection—where all of those little pebbles and feathers they gather outside can go. When the box is full, it's time to return some things to nature. Bonus: Include a magnifying glass so they can examine everything.

STORYTIME AND LANGUAGE A well-stocked and cozy book corner is always a wonderful place for a child to spend time.

Other areas that you won't find in a classroom, but might want to include at home are pretend play and a building area with various kinds of blocks and legos. You can really set up a small area for anything your child is interested in.

To treat everybody with respect, regardless of their position or status. I really believe that if you treat people well, it is mostly returned. As the saying goes, ‘Good manners will open doors that the best education cannot.’ Kindness and manners cost nothing, but mean everything.

What is your dream holiday destination?

It has to be Oman. It has a special place in my heart. I grew up there, and Muscat is home. The Omani people are so genuine and hospitable, and the coastline is stunning. I have been lucky enough to have seen turtles, nemo fish, octopus, rays, eels, angel fish, puffer fish etc. It probably would have been easier to say what I hadn’t seen while snorkelling a few metres from the shore in Muscat. The starlit desert is magical, and the mountains hold their own beauty with vast caves and even some leopards. I hope to be lucky enough to see the leopards – maybe one day!

Landing a great job at the London School of Economics & Political Science and spending a fantastic 11 years there. It really is a fabulous institution and houses some great people with incredible minds; some slightly eccentric and whacky maybe, but nevertheless still notable. I worked closely with Sir (he hates being called Sir) Howard Davies where no two days were ever the same. He once said in a radio interview that I was the first person he’d call in an emergency because I was forever shielding him from unwelcome customers, or the random oddball who walked in off the street thinking that he must be in charge for all the street lamps in UK being used as CCTV cameras!

I kid you not. I have so many stories… Then I went on to manage LSE’s international partnerships – and indeed my first trip to Bahrain was for precisely that reason way back in 2011. I then moved to Bahrain permanently, around 5 years ago, and now work as the Communications and Recruitment Manager at Vatel College – ‘the Sorbonne’ of Hospitality around the world so I am now mixing education with manners!

Fundraising for the BSPCA was so much fun, and it was great to be surrounded by a community of people who care about the welfare of animals, especially here in Bahrain where the weather is so harsh. The animals need all the kindness and support we can offer in order to survive in this climate. Putting out a bowl of fresh water daily goes a long way…
